Abstract

Compared with regular employees, independent contractors (ICs) offer labor flexibility and cost savings to their employers. Using a difference-in-differences design around the 2004 Massachusetts law that discourages IC usage, we find that this exogenous decrease in IC usage makes treated firms' earnings more sensitive to changes in sales, increases labor-related expenses, and reduces profitability. Firms subsequently reduce share repurchases. The decrease is more pronounced for firms with high operating leverage and financial constraints. Our results are robust to entropy balancing. We conclude that IC usage affects firms' operating leverage and profitability, which in turn, influence payout policy. This paper was accepted by Victoria Ivashina, finance. 3. Asymmetric Cost Behavior and Non-Financial Firms' Risky Financial Investments

Abstract

Using hand-collected data on non-financial firms’ financial portfolios, I examine how asymmetric cost behavior (or cost stickiness) affects risky financial investments. Sticky costs amplify the downward effect of sales decrease on profits because costs do not fall when sales decrease by as much as they rise when sales increase. I find that firms with sticky costs avoid risky financial investments because of expected liquidity needs and the trade-off between operating and financial risk. Oster’s delta and shock-based instrumental variable design address endogeneity concerns. For firms with sticky costs, investing in risky securities subdues non-financial investments and increases a firm’s risk exposure without creating shareholder value.

Abstract

The electronic structure of spinel FeV2O4, which contains two Jahn-Teller active Fe and V ions, has been investigated by employing soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). XAS indicates that V ions are trivalent and Fe ions are nearly divalent. The signs of V and Fe 2p XMCD spectra are opposite to each other. It is found that the effect of the V 3d spin-orbit interaction on the V 2p XMCD spectrum is negligible, indicating that the orbital ordering of V t2g states occurs from the real orbital states and that the orbital moment of a V3+ ion is mostly quenched. NMR shows that V spins are canted to have a Yafet-Kittel-type triangular spin configuration.

34. Soft X-ray synchrotron radiation spectroscopy study of the Co0.6Fe0.9Mn1.5O4spinel with nano-checkerboard patterns

Abstract

The electronic structures of water-quenched (WQ) and checkerboard (CB) samples of spinel Co0.6Fe0.9Mn1.5O4have been investigated by employing soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy and soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The valence states of Co, Fe, and Mn ions are found to be nearly divalent (Co2+), trivalent (Fe3+), and Mn2+-Mn3+mixed-valent, respectively, in both WQ and CB Co0.6Fe0.9Mn1.5O4. Mn2+and Mn3+ions occupy the tetrahedral (Td) and the octahedral (Oh) sites, respectively, with their spin magnetic moments antiparallel to each other while Fe3+and Co2+ions occupy both Ohand Tdsites. As the CB nano-structures are formed in Co0.6Fe0.9Mn1.5O4, some of the Td-site Mn2+ions transform to Oh-site Mn3+ions while some of the Oh-site Fe3+ions transform to Td-site Fe3+ions. These findings indicate that the chemical phase separation in the CB nano-structures is mediated by the cooperative distortions of Janh-Teller Mn3+ions.

Abstract

In this study, the effects of adding TiB2 particles to eutectic Al + Mg2Si phases in aluminum alloys were analyzed. The eutectic Al + Mg2Si phases were modified effectively when a large amount of TiB2 was added, and changes in the shape, size, and distribution of the eutectic Al + Mg2Si phases were confirmed using a polarizing microscope and FE-SEM. The crystal structure of the TiB2 particles and Mg2Si phases were analyzed using HR-TEM, and the analysis confirmed that the TiB2 particles can act as heterogeneous nucleation sites. This paper intends to clarify the principle of phase modification of the eutectic Al + Mg2Si phases by TiB2 particles and proposes a new mechanism to improve Mg2Si phase modification when TiB2 particles are added.
