Purpose: Interval-training sets may be applied in a different sequence within a swimming training session. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different set sequences on performance and physiological responses in a training session. Methods: Twelve highly trained male swimmers performed 4 sessions in randomized order. Each session included a different combination of 2 training sets: set A–set C, set C–set A, set B–set C, or set C–set B. Set A consisted of 8 × 200 m at speed corresponding to lactate threshold (30-s recovery), set B included 8 × 100 m at maximum aerobic speed (30-s recovery), and set C included 4 × 50-m all-out swimming (2-min recovery). Performance and physiological responses (lactate concentration, pH, base excess, bicarbonate, heart rate, and heart-rate variability) were measured. Results: Performance in each set was similar between sessions irrespective of set sequence. Blood lactate, heart rate, and acid–base responses during set C were similar in all sessions, but blood lactate was higher in sets A and B during C–A and C–B sessions (P =.01). The overall blood lactate and acid–base response was higher in C–A and C–B sessions compared with A–C and B–C sessions, respectively (P =.01). Heart-rate variability in each set, separately as well as the overall session effect, did not differ and was thus independent to the set sequence applied. Global potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from soil are accelerating, with increases in the proportion of reactive nitrogen emitted as N2O, i.e., N2O emission factor (EF). Yet, the primary controls and underlying mechanisms of EFs remain unresolved. Based on two independent but complementary global syntheses, and three field studies determining effects of acidity on N2O EFs and soil denitrifying microorganisms, we show that soil pH predominantly controls N2O EFs and emissions by affecting the denitrifier community composition. Analysis of 5438 paired data points of N2O emission fluxes revealed a hump-shaped relationship between soil pH and EFs, with the highest EFs occurring in moderately acidic soils that favored N2O-producing over N2O-consuming microorganisms, and induced high N2O emissions. Our results illustrate that soil pH has a unimodal relationship with soil denitrifiers and EFs, and the net N2O emission depends on both the N2O/(N2O + N2) ratio and overall denitrification rate. These findings can inform strategies to predict and mitigate soil N2O emissions under future nitrogen input scenarios.

Issatchenkia orientalis is a promising industrial chassis to produce biofuels and bioproducts due to its high tolerance to multiple environmental stresses such as low pH, heat, and other chemicals otherwise toxic for the most widely used microbes. Yet, little is known about specific mechanisms of such tolerance in this organism, hindering our ability to engineer this species to produce valuable biochemicals. Here, we report a comprehensive study of the mechanisms of acidic tolerance in this species via transcriptome profiling across variable pH for 12 different strains with different phenotypes. We found multiple regulatory mechanisms involved in tolerance to low pH in different strains of I. orientalis, marking potential targets for future gene editing and perturbation experiments.

Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) is characterized by chronic low ruminal pH, and occurs for feedlot cattle fed high-concentrate diets. Forages slow digestion and reduce acid production. We aimed to assess how motivated finishing cattle are to access forage (Sudan grass hay, SG) via their willingness to interact with an electrified barrier. Reticulorumen pH was measured to relate the results to digestive health. Twenty-eight animals fed a high-concentrate ration ad libitum had access to 4 L of one of two treatments (n = 14/treatment) fed 1×/d behind a barrier: 1) SG or 2) an additional offering of the normal ration (total mixed ration [TMR]). To access their treatment, the steer voluntarily pushed his muzzle against an electrified barrier. The electrical current was increased exponentially every 24 h (0, 156, 312, 625, 1,250, 2,500, 5,000 µA) until the animal ceased accessing it. Visits to the treatment were recorded continuously 24 h/d and reticulorumen pH was measured every 10 min. Time with a reticulorumen pH below 5.8 was 348 ± 101 and 280 ± 76 min/24 h for SG and TMR animals, respectively; these durations meet the criterion for SARA. Chitin is an abundant biopolymer and pathogen-associated molecular pattern that stimulates a host innate immune response. Mammals express chitin-binding and chitin-degrading proteins to remove chitin from the body. One of these proteins, Acidic Mammalian Chitinase (AMCase), is an enzyme known for its ability to function under acidic conditions in the stomach but is also active in tissues with more neutral pHs, such as the lung. Here, we used a combination of biochemical, structural, and computational modeling approaches to examine how the mouse homolog (mAMCase) can act in both acidic and neutral environments. We measured kinetic properties of mAMCase activity across a broad pH range, quantifying its unusual dual activity optima at pH 2 and 7. We also solved high-resolution crystal structures of mAMCase in complex with oligomeric GlcNAcn, the building block of chitin, where we identified extensive conformational ligand heterogeneity. Leveraging these data, we conducted molecular dynamics simulations that suggest how a key catalytic residue could be protonated via distinct mechanisms in each of the two environmental pH ranges. These results integrate structural, biochemical, and computational approaches to deliver a more complete understanding of the catalytic mechanism governing mAMCase activity at different pH. Engineering proteins with tunable pH optima may provide new opportunities to develop improved enzyme variants, including AMCase, for therapeutic purposes in chitin degradation.

BACKGROUND: Sliding hiatal herniation (SHH) and gastroesophageal reflux (GER) commonly occur in French bulldogs. Wireless pH monitoring can quantitatively assess acidic GER in dogs affected by SHH. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: Measure acidic GER in French bulldogs with SHH, pre- and post-brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) surgery, utilizing a wireless pH capsule (Bravo Calibration-free, Medtronic, Minnesota), and correlate with owners observations of regurgitation. In case of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), the replacement of digestive enzymes with, for example porcine pancreatin or fungal rizoenzymes, is unavoidable under certain conditions. Current guidelines indicate that preparations from porcine pancreas have more advantageous physicochemical properties compared to those from fungi, especially at high bile salt concentrations, and that the latter can, therefore, only be used clinically to a limited extent. Since rizoenzymes are increasingly used in clinical practice, the present in vitro study investigated efficiency of enzymatic activity of rizoenzymes in comparison to pancreatin under various physiological and partly extreme environmental conditions. The lipolytic properties of two typical preparations containing digestive enzymes from porcine pancreatin and rizoenzymes were compared (same dosage of activity units) at different pH values (pH 3–9), with the addition of different bile salt concentrations (0–15 mmol/L sodium taurocholate). Lipolytic activity was measured by quantifying the fatty acids released from olive oil substrate by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry after enzymatic digestion. For both enzyme preparations, the lipolytic activity maximum was reached at pH 7 with comparable fatty acid conversion rates (57% pancreatin, 58% rizoenzymes). However, in contrast to pancreatin, rizoenzymes were already active for certain fatty acids from pH 3 to 4. At a bile salt concentration up to 10 mmol/L taurocholate, there was an increase in activity of both enzyme preparations (rizoenzymes 69% vs. pancreatin 58% enzymatic conversion). Only at rather unphysiological concentration of 15 mmol/L during EPI, there was a slight decrease in activity (to 56%) for the rizoenzymes. Rizoenzymes are an alternative therapeutic option for EPI. Relevant differences between rizoenzymes and pancreatin with regard to lipolytic activity under different physicochemical conditions could not be demonstrated in this study, whereas a potential advantage in favor of rizoenzymes activity at already low pH values was observed. White-water yam (Dioscorea alata L.) is one of the potential sources of starch; however, it is not yet available for commercial purposes. Besides, native white-water yam starch (WS) presents limited functionality due to poor flowability, mechanical properties and instability at high temperature and acidic conditions. Therefore, this study aims to modify the starch to improve its characteristics and make it useful as an excipient for the preparation of the tablets. The modification of WS was achieved by physical and chemical treatments, specifically pre-gelatinization and phosphorylation, respectively. Pre-gelatinization WS involves heating, meanwhile phosphorylation WS is obtained by treating WS with sodium tripolyphosphate. The results showed that the powder of the modified WS has good characteristics which improved the flowability of the powder mixture as a granule based on density, porosity, compressibility index and swelling power determination. The WS granules were found to display the oval or irregular (polygonal) shape with the amylose content 11.92±0.61% for unmodified WS, 10.41±0.90% for pre-gelatinized WS and 12.61±1.75% for phosphorylated WS. Furthermore, the granule was formulated as an excipient in tablet preparations, and the formulas were compressed after wet granulation. The mechanical properties of the tablets were assessed using uniformity of mass and size, hardness, friability and disintegration time. WS modification affects the hardness of tablets when used as a binder. Phosphorylated WS is recommended to be used as a binder in wet granulation formulations because it produces tablets with a longer disintegration time, which means better binding ability. However, the utilization of modified WS with both pre-gelatinization and phosphorylation leads to tablets with low brittleness compared to others with unmodified binder with the disintegration time still met the requirement of fast disintegrating tablet (<15 minutes). The present study focuses on the Ría de Vigo (NW Spain), a coastal embayment influenced by the Canary Current Upwelling System, which is among the world's significant Eastern Boundary Upwelling Ecosystems. The research assesses historical changes in the marine carbonate system by generating 25-year weekly time series at six stations. Assessing ocean acidification in the region is complex due to diverse factors influencing coastal carbon dynamics, making predictions more challenging. To capture the specific dynamics in Ría de Vigo, ensembles of Neural Networks were applied. These networks were trained with a data set obtained in several oceanographic cruises, in order to retrieve pH, hydrogen ion concentration and alkalinity, achieving a root mean square error of 0.0272 pH units, 0.588 nmol kg - 1 , and 10.6 μ mol kg - 1 , respectively. Subsequently, time series of the selected variables were generated, applying data of predictors measured at the aforementioned stations. An increase in normalized alkalinity was observed for all stations, except in the surface layer at the innermost location. A decrease in pH and an increase in hydrogen ion concentration were observed for all points, with trends that exceed reported rates of ocean acidification in the open ocean. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, a trisodium citrate (TSC)-assisted hydrothermal method is utilized to prepare three-dimensional hydroxyapatite (3D HA). Understanding the role of TSC in the preparation of 3D HA crystals may provide valuable methods to design advanced biomaterials. As one of the indexes of solution supersaturation, the initial pH (ipH) value can not only directly affect the nucleation rate, but also affect the growth of HA crystals. In this work, the effect of the ipH on the microstructure, particle size distribution, and specific surface area of the 3D HA is explored. Results showed that the morphology of 3D HA transformed from a bundle to a dumbbell ball and then a dumbbell with an increase in the ipH. A corresponding mechanism of such a structural evolution was proposed, providing inspiration for the fabrication of innovative 3D HA structures with enhanced biological functionality and performance. Objective In studies of concomitant arterial–venous umbilical cord blood gases (CAV-UBGs), approximately 10% of technically valid samples have very similar pH and/or pCO 2 values and were probably drawn from the same type of blood vessel. Without a way to objectively determine the source in these cases, it has been argued that most of these same-source CAV-UBGs are venous because the vein is larger and more easily sampled than the artery. This study aimed to calculate the probability of an arterial (ProbAS) or venous source (ProbVS) of same-source CAV-UBGs in the clinically and medicolegally important pH range of 6.70 to 7.25 using a statistical predictive model based on the cord blood gas values. Study Design Starting with a dataset of 56,703 CAV-UBGs, the ProbAS, ProbVS, and respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for the 241 sample pairs with near-identical pH, pCO 2 , and pO 2 values and a pH of 6.70 to 7.25. Using a previously validated generalized additive model, the source was categorized as: Probable Arterial or Highly Probable Arterial if the ProbAS and CIs were >0.5 or >0.8, respectively; Probable Venous or Highly Probable Venous if the ProbVS and CIs were >0.5 or >0.8, respectively; or Indeterminant if the CIs encompassed ProbAS/VS = 0.5. Results A total of 39% of the same-source CAV-UBGs were Probable Arterial, 56% were Probable Venous, and 5% were Indeterminant. However, considering samples with a pH ≤7.19, 80% were Probable Arterial and 16% were Probable Venous. Considering the Highly Probable categories, the more acidemic specimens were 9 times more likely to be arterial than venous. Similarly, CAV-UBGs with pCO 2 > 8.2 kPa (62 mm Hg) or pO 2 ≤ 1.9 kPa (14 mm Hg) were more likely to be in the arterial rather than the venous categories. Conclusion Same-source CAV-UBGs in the more acidemic, hypercarbic, or hypoxemic ranges are more likely to be arterial than venous. Background: Preterm infants require the use of nasogastric and orogastric enteral access devices (EADs) to provide nutrition and medications. Confirmation of the location of the tip of the EAD is essential to minimize complications. At the study site, EAD location was limited to verifying the centimeter marking at the lip/nares and nonevidence-based methods of visual observation of aspirate and auscultation. Purpose: Implement an evidenced-based EAD placement confirmation protocol, and by 90 days post-education and implementation, achieve adherence of 90%. Methods: This quality improvement project implemented a nurse-driven evidence-based protocol for EAD verification. The intervention was based on the New Opportunities for Verification of Enteral Tube Location best practice recommendations. Prior to implementation, education sessions focused on insertion measurement technique and gastric pH measurement. Radiographs, insertion measurement technique, centimeter marking, and gastric pH measurement were used for EAD location confirmation. To determine compliance with the protocol, audits were conducted and questionnaires assessing current practice regarding EAD confirmation were administered pre- and postimplementation. Results: The protocol increased nursing knowledge regarding evidence-based EAD insertion and verification procedures, incorporated pH measurement into practice, and reduced use of auscultation for confirmation. Nursing adherence to the protocol was 92%. Implications for Practice and Research: This provides a model for how to successfully implement and achieve adherence to an evidence-based EAD placement confirmation nurse-driven protocol. Objective: This scoping review aimed (1) to map, analyse, interpret and synthesize data from in situ studies on which substances were added to acidic beverages to reduce the erosive potential on tooth enamel and (2) to establish the level of evidence of the effectiveness of adding substances to acidic beverages to reduce the erosive potential on tooth enamel. Design: This is a scoping review, according to the methods from the Joanna Briggs Institute and PRISMA‐ScR, with high‐sensitivity searches in the databases PubMed (MEDLINE), Virtual Health Library, Embase (Elsevier), Scopus (Elsevier), Web of Science and ScienceDirect (Elsevier). In situ studies published in English until December 2022 were included. Studies that did not report a control group were excluded. To map and summarize the results, tables and figures were used. Results: From 895 potentially eligible articles, nine were included. Blackcurrant juices (n = 5) with the addition of calcium (n = 3) or xanthan gum (n = 2) formulations were the most tested in terms of reducing the erosive potential of the beverages on tooth enamel. The profilometer was the equipment of choice (n = 8) for evaluating the loss of enamel structure after the experimental tests. Conclusions: Calcium and xanthan gum are among the most tested by in situ studies, offering promising results in reducing the erosive potential of fruit juices and carbonated and energy drinks. Introduction: In community settings with limited dental personnel and equipment, and in an era when the aerosol transmission of infectious agents is on the rise, a non‐invasive approach to caries management is critical. To provide information on non‐invasive material selection, the aim of this study was to compare the remineralization effect of commonly used fluoride‐containing materials, adjunctive to the everyday use of fluoride toothpaste (F‐toothpaste), on primary tooth natural dentin caries. Methods: Fifty‐five specimens were randomly divided into five groups: 38% silver diamine fluoride (SDF), 5% fluoride varnish (F‐varnish), glass‐ionomer cement (GIC), deionized water (DW) with F‐toothpaste slurry, and DW as a control group (n = 11). The lesion depth and mineral density were measured before and after bacterial pH‐cycling using micro‐computed tomography. The percentage of mineral density change (%MDchange) was quantified. The dependent t‐test, Wilcoxon‐Signed‐Rank Test, and one way ANOVA with Bonferroni correction were used to analyse the data. Results: SDF application reduced lesion depth from 844.6 to 759.1 μm (p < 0.045) while increasing mineral density from 551.4 to 763.0 mgHA/cm3 (p < 0.003). Only mineral density rose from 600.2 to 678.4 mgHA/cm3 (p < 0.013) when GIC was used. The other groups showed no difference. The highest %MDchange was also found after SDF treatment (49.7%, p < 0.05), whereas GIC (17.2%, p < 0.05) presented a higher percentage than the F‐varnish (2.0%), F‐toothpaste (−1.1%) and no‐treatment groups (−1.4%). Conclusion: In this in vitro study, where the pH of cycling was almost neutral, using SDF as an adjunct to F‐toothpaste resulted in the highest remineralization compared with other remineralizing materials. Background: The nicotine in e-cigarette liquid can negatively impact periodontal tissues by altering the salivary pH and elevating cotinine levels. Thus, the study aimed to determine the periodontal parameters, salivary pH, and cotinine levels among cigarette, e-cigarette, and never-smokers. Methods: A total of 144 participants were recruited (48 cigarette smokers, 48 e-cigarette smokers, and 48 never-smokers). Clinical periodontal parameters, including plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), periodontal probing pocket depth (PPD), and clinical attachment loss (CAL) were recorded, excluding third molars. The level of unstimulated whole salivary pH was measured using a portable pH meter and the levels of salivary cotinine were measured using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Results: Data were analysed statistically using analysis of variance. Mean scores of PPD, percentage of pocket depth ≥ 4 mm, and CAL (p < 0.05) were significantly higher among cigarette smokers than those in e-cigarette and never-smokers, while GI (p < 0.05) were significantly higher among e-cigarette smokers. The unstimulated salivary pH was more acidic among cigarette smokers (p < 0.05) and e-cigarette smokers (p < 0.05) than in never-smokers. The cotinine levels were higher among cigarette smokers (p < 0.05) and e-cigarette smokers (p < 0.05) than in never-smokers. Conclusions: Clinical periodontal parameters were poorer in cigarette smokers than in e-cigarette smokers and never-smokers. Meanwhile, cigarette and e-cigarette smokers have more acidic salivary pH and higher cotinine levels than in never-smokers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-saving treatment option providing cardiopulmonary support when standard therapies prove insufficient for reversible diseases. The mean objective of this study was to evaluate our center’s experience with ECMO following pediatric cardiac surgery. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was conducted in our pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) between November 2014 and March 2021 and included patients who received ECMO following cardiac surgery. Results: Over the 7-year period, 324 patients underwent cardiac surgery, of which 24 (7.4%) required ECMO support. Among them, 13 (54.2%) were female, with a median age of 16.0 (2.0-208) months and a median weight of 7.0 (3.5-70) kg. The mean vasoactive inotrope score (VIS) was 53.9 ± 44.5. Atrioventricular septal defect repair was the most common surgical procedure (n = 8/24, 41.6%). The primary indication for ECMO was low cardiac output syndrome (LCOS) in 14 (58.3%) patients. The median duration of ECMO support was 6.0 (1.0-46.0) days. Nonsurvivors had significantly higher Pediatric Risk Score of Mortality (PRISM) III scores (P = .014) and VIS scores during the pre-ECMO period (P = .004). Early or late neurological complications developed in 12 (50%) patients, with significant differences in lactate levels and pH levels pre-ECMO between those with and without neurological complications (P = .01, P = .02, respectively). We successfully decannulated 16 (66.6%) patients, with a final survival rate of 12 (50%). Conclusion: ECMO plays a crucial role in providing pre- and post-cardiac surgery support for children. Natural and anthropogenic water pollution caused by heavy metals has become a major problem worldwide. As a result of these processes, many harmful heavy metals are mixed into the water and endanger the environment and human health. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the hydrogeochemical properties of the stream waters of Göynük Canyon (Göynük Stream), which is located in southern Turkey, an important touristic region of Antalya. A total of 44 water samples were retained to evaluate the geochemical type, heavy metal contamination level, and suitability for drinking and irrigation of Göynük Canyon Stream waters. All samples were analysed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and multi-parameter portable water quality assessment. Analysed water samples were found to be of classes II and III in terms of overall water quality. The average hardness level is above the limit values. The results of geochemical analyses showed that the common water types in the region are Mg–Ca–HCO3, Ca–Mg–HCO3, Ca–Mg–HCO3–SO4, and Ca–Mg–HCO3–Cl-water facies. Most of the samples belong to the "rock weathering dominated" region represented in the Gibbs diagram. The hydrogen ion concentration (pH), electrical conductivity (EC), and total dissolved solids (TDS) values vary between respectively 6.5–7.9; 230.4–720.8 μS/cm, and 149–468 mg/L. Cations and anions followed the order Ca2+ > Mg2+ > Na+ > K+ and HCO3 − > SO42− > Cl− > F− > NO3 − . Heavy metal anomalies in water followed an increasing order: Cu < As < Pb < Ni < Ba < Fe < Cr < Mn < Zn < Sr. These heavy metals showed high index values (Poseidon index (PoS), contamination factor (CF), enrichment factor (EF), geochemical index (Igeo), heavy metals pollution index (HPI), contamination degree (Cd), in some water samples. There is a spatial anomaly in these locations related to limestone and ophiolite. This water can be used for irrigation purposes according to Wilcox, the United States salinity laboratory diagram (USSL), permeability index (PI), Kelly’s ratio (KR), and Residual Sodium Carbonate (RSC). Purpose Special consideration is needed when intravenous drugs are administered simultaneously using a Y-site connector. This study aimed to investigate the physical compatibility of colistin with 6 analgesics at concentrations commonly used in clinical practice. Methods A pharmaceutical preparation of colistin was dissolved according to the manufacturer's instructions and diluted to a concentration of 1.5 mg/mL or 0.67 mg/mL (of colistin base). Simulated administration via Y-site infusion set was performed by mixing 5 mL of colistin solution with an equal volume of a solution of one of 6 intravenous analgesics. Infusion solutions of ibuprofen, ketoprofen, metamizole sodium, morphine sulfate, paracetamol, and tramadol hydrochloride were studied. For each analgesic tested, concentrates for injection were diluted with 2 solvents, resulting in 11 different combinations with each concentration of the colistin solution. The mixtures were visually inspected, and their turbidity was measured directly after mixing and at 3 consecutive time points (30, 60, and 120 minutes). Additionally, the pH of the mixtures was measured after 120 minutes and compared with the pH of the analgesic and the colistin solutions. Results During visual inspection with the unaided eye, no precipitate formation or gas evolution was observed in any of the tested analgesics except for sodium metamizole, where the yellow color of the solutions was observed. For samples containing the mixture of ibuprofen and colistin, the turbidity measurements revealed the presence of turbidity in the studied mixtures. The greatest change in pH relative to the value immediately after preparation was noted for combinations of ketoprofen and morphine sulfate with the tested antibiotic. Conclusion Colistin was found to be incompatible with ibuprofen and metamizole sodium formulations. It should also not be combined with morphine sulfate due to the significant differences in the pH value of the preparations. Background: Tracheal intubation sometimes causes postoperative sore throat (POST) due to laryngeal damage. However, clinical observations suggest that the environment of the oral cavity may also affect POST. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether salivary pH in the oral cavity affects POST. Methods: After obtaining ethical approval, informed consent was obtained from all patients. Patients who underwent surgery in the supine position were enrolled as the control group. Patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery in the head‐down position were enrolled as the intervention group. Immediately before both groups of patients were anaesthetised, expelled saliva was collected, and salivary pH was measured. Immediately postoperatively, the same measurement was carried out before the patient regained consciousness. The primary outcome was the change in salivary pH. The secondary outcome was POST. In our study, POST was defined as pharyngeal and swallowing pain in the glossopharyngeal and superior laryngeal nerves. The normal distribution of pH was tested using the Shapiro–Wilk test followed by analysis using repeated‐measurements and one‐way analysis of variance. Statistical significance was set at p <.05. Results: A total of 62 patients were enrolled, of whom two were excluded based on the exclusion criteria. Salivary pH in the intervention group was significantly lower than that in the control group. Five patients had POST in the intervention group, whereas none had POST in the control group had POST. Conclusion: Acidotic‐shifted saliva is considered one of the causes of POST. (1) Objectives: Assessment of novel impedance parameters such as the post-reflux swallow-induced peristaltic wave (PSPW) index and mean nocturnal baseline impedance (MNBI) have been proposed to enhance the accuracy of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) diagnosis. We aimed to evaluate the clinical value of MNBI and the PSPW index in discerning different phenotypes of GERD in children. (2) Methods: We conducted a prospective, observational study that included 49 children aged 5–18 years, referred for MII-pH monitoring due to negative endoscopy and persisting gastroesophageal reflux symptoms despite acid-suppressant treatment. The PSPW index and MNBI were assessed along with conventional metrics. (3) Results: Using a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, MNBI (AUC 0.864) and the PSPW index (AUC 0.83) had very good performance in differentiating between non-erosive reflux disease (NERD) and functional phenotypes. The PSPW index (AUC 0.87) discriminated better between functional heartburn (FH) and reflux hypersensitivity (RH) compared to the MNBI (AUC 0.712). A PSPW cut-off value of 65% provided a sensitivity of 76.9% and a specificity of 90% in distinguishing FH and RH. The PSPW index (AUC 0.87) proved to have better performance than the MNBI (AUC 0.802) in differentiating between FH and non-FH patients. MNBI diagnosed FH with a sensitivity of 84% and a specificity of 80.6% at a cut-off value of 2563 Ω. Prolonged mechanical loading of the skin and underlying soft tissue cause pressure ulceration. The use of special support surfaces are key interventions in pressure ulcer prevention. They modify the degree and duration of soft tissue deformation and have an impact on the skin microclimate. The objective of this randomized cross‐over trial was to compare skin responses and comfort after lying for 2.5 h supine on a support surface with and without a coverlet that was intended to assist with heat and moisture removal at the patient/surface interface. In addition, physiological saline solution was administered to simulate an incontinence episode on the mattress next to the participants' skin surface. In total, 12 volunteers (mean age 69 years) with diabetes mellitus participated. After loading, skin surface temperature, stratum corneum hydration and skin surface pH increased, whereas erythema and structural stiffness decreased at the sacral area. At the heel skin area, temperature, erythema, and stratum corneum hydration increased. These results indicate occlusion and soft tissue deformation which was aggravated by the saline solution. Lithium hydride (LiH) is a promising material for the production of hydrogen via hydrolysis. However, the formation of lithium hydroxide (LiOH) during the hydrolysis process hinders contact between the remaining LiH and water, retarding the hydrolysis reaction and increasing the actual amount of water required. Through this study, it is demonstrated that an increase in the hydrogen ion concentration can improve the hydrolysis of LiH. When the hydrogen ion concentration reaches 1 mol L−1, the maximum hydrolysis rate is 232.6 mL min−1, and the H 2 generation yield reaches 2102.8 mL. Additionally, we investigated the effects of doping solid acids and strong acid–weak base salts on LiH hydrolysis. Experimental results indicate that the addition of solid acids led to a hydrogen generation behavior similar to that with acid solutions. In particular, after the addition of oxalic acid, the maximum hydrolysis rate attained was 362.0 mL min−1, and the H 2 generation yield reached 2108.3 mL. After the addition of dl -malic acid, citric acid and dl -tartaric acid, the maximum hydrolysis rate attained were 173.1, 170.0 and 255.8 mL min−1, respectively. Under alkaline conditions, the hydrolysis of strong acid–weak base salts was enhanced, and the released hydrogen ions consumed LiOH, thereby increasing the rate of LiH hydrolysis. After the addition of CuSO 4 , the maximum hydrolysis rate attained was 403.8 mL min−1, and the H 2 generation yield attaining 2036.0 mL. After the addition of AlCl 3 and FeCl 3 , the maximum hydrolysis rate attained were 212.5 and 221.3 mL min−1. Thus, an increase in the concentration of hydrogen ions and the addition of solid acids and strong acid–weak base salts are effective techniques for reducing the adverse effects of LiOH formation on LiH hydrolysis for hydrogen production. Camelina cake (CAM) is a co-product proposed as an alternative protein source; however, piglet data are still limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different doses of CAM in substitution of soyabean meal on the growth, health and gut health of weaned pigs. At 14 d post-weaning (d0), sixty-four piglets were assigned either to a standard diet or to a diet with 4 %, 8 % or 12 % of CAM. Piglets were weighed weekly. At d7 and d28, faeces were collected for microbiota and polyamine and blood for reactive oxygen metabolites (ROM) and thyroxine analysis. At d28, pigs were slaughtered, organs were weighed, pH was recorded on gut, colon was analysed for volatile fatty acids (VFA) and jejunum was used for morphological and gene expression analysis. Data analysis was carried out using a mixed model including diet, pen and litter as factors; linear and quadratic contrasts were tested. CAM linearly reduced the average daily gain from d0–d7, d0–d14, d0–d21 and d0–d28 (P ≤ 0·01). From d0–d7 increasing CAM linearly decreased feed intake (P = 0·04) and increased linearly the feed to gain (P = 0·004). CAM increased linearly the liver weight (P < 0·0001) and affected the cadaverine (P < 0·001). The diet did not affect the ROM, thyroxine, intestinal pH, VFA and morphology. All doses of CAM increased the α diversity indices at d28 (P < 0·05). CAM at 4 % promoted the abundance of Butyricicoccaceae_UCG-008. Feeding with CAM enhanced resilience in the gut microbiome and can be evaluated as a potential alternative protein source with dose-dependent limitations on piglet growth performance. The study evaluated the potential of recycling treated industrial effluent for groundwater quality and quantity restoration using a laboratory--scale soil aquifer treatment (SAT) simulator. SAT has the potential to reverse groundwater level decline being experienced in the North-eastern part of Nigeria and saltwater intrusion and groundwater quality deterioration in the coastal zones of the country. Soil column depth (SDC) and hydraulic loading rate (HLR) were optimized for the best treatment performance. Results show that HLR of 14.6 mm min-1 at an SCD of 1.5 m gave maximum removal efficiency for all parameters (hydrogen ion concentration (pH), temperature, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), dissolved oxygen (DO), bio-chemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total hardness (TH), chloride (Cl-), calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), sodium (Na+), potassium (K+) and bacterial count (BC)) tested in comparison with HLR 16.98 and 20.37 mm min-1 and SCD of 0.5 and 1.0 m. This renders the wastewater adequate for aquifer storage and subsequent reuse. Further evaluation of the results indicates that surface spreading system will be best suited for the Sudan and Sahel Savannah areas of the country, while direct injection into wells is recommended for the southern and coastal areas. Given that Nigeria has a vast potential for managed aquifer recharge (MAR), the implication is that the implementation requires policy and regulatory frameworks to enable bulk wastewater producers to put their effluents to positive use and thus to enhance environmental sustainability. BACKGROUND: The Hill classification characterizes the geometry of gastroesophageal junction and Hill grades (HGs) III and IV have a high association with pathologic reflux. This study aimed to understand the use of the Hill classification and correlate the prevalence of pathologic reflux across different HGs. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review of 477 patients who underwent upper endoscopy and BRAVO pH monitoring between August 2018 and October 2021 was performed. These charts were reviewed for endoscopic findings for hiatal hernia and association of HGs with pathologic reflux, defined as an abnormal esophageal acid exposure time (AET) of =4.9%. RESULTS: Of 477 patients, 252 (52.8%) had an HG documented on the endoscopy report. Of the 252 patients, 61 had HG I (24.2%), 100 had HG II (39.7%), 61 had HG III (24.2%), and 30 had HG IV (11.9%). The proportion of patients with abnormal AET increases with increasing HGs (p < 0.001) as follows: I (39.3%), II (52.5%), III (67.2%), and IV (79.3%). The mean overall AET is as follows: HG I (5.5 ± 6%), HG II (7.0 ± 5.9%), HG III (10.2 ± 10.3%), and HG IV (9.5 ± 5.5%). The proportion of patients with hiatal hernia was 18% for HG I, 28% for HG II, 39.3% for HG III, and 80% for HG IV. CONCLUSIONS: Use of the Hill classification in clinical practice is low. There is an association of increasing HGs with increasing proportion of patients with abnormal AET. There is a high proportion of patients within HGs I and II with documented pathologic reflux and the presence of a hiatal hernia as observed on endoscopic examination. Our study suggests that endoscopic grading of the gastroesophageal junction may not adequately differentiate between normal vs abnormal reflux status, particularly for HGs I and II. Dehydration is a typical problem among the elderly people who live in nursing homes. It is a condition that is costly in terms of health care costs and length of treatment due to the illnesses it causes. It is a condition that can be prevented, and elderly people can benefit from initiatives to increase their fluid intake. This study aimed to find out how the hydration status of elderly people is affected by hydration education. It was also an assessment of the participants' hydration status and water intake from sources. Forty-three elderly people from two nursing homes participated in this quasi-experimental study. There were 25 elderly in the intervention group (IG) and 18 in the control group (CG). For one month, 40-minute sessions per week (20 minutes of education and 20 minutes of activity) were devoted to teaching about fluid consumption. To evaluate the effectiveness of the education, the water balance questionnaire, urine USG and pH measurement, and the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly were assessed before, at the end of the intervention, and three months after. The results showed that the IG group's hydration improved, and their short-term water consumption increased. Education needs to be carefully implemented and the results followed up to ensure that elderly people develop a habit of drinking water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Artificial CO 2 removal from the atmosphere (also referred to as negative CO 2 emissions) has been proposed as a potential means to counteract anthropogenic climate change. Here we use an Earth system model to examine the response of ocean acidification to idealized atmospheric CO 2 removal scenarios. In our simulations, atmospheric CO 2 is assumed to increase at a rate of 1% per year to four times its pre-industrial value and then decreases to the pre-industrial level at a rate of 0.5%, 1%, 2% per year, respectively. Our results show that the annual mean state of surface ocean carbonate chemistry fields including hydrogen ion concentration ([H+]), pH and aragonite saturation state respond quickly to removal of atmospheric CO 2. However, the change of seasonal cycle in carbonate chemistry lags behind the decline in atmospheric CO 2. When CO 2 returns to the pre-industrial level, over some parts of the ocean, relative to the pre-industrial state, the seasonal amplitude of carbonate chemistry fields is substantially larger. Simulation results also show that changes in deep ocean carbonate chemistry substantially lag behind atmospheric CO 2 change. When CO 2 returns to its pre-industrial value, the whole-ocean acidity measured by [H+] is 15%-18% larger than the pre-industrial level, depending on the rate of CO 2 decrease. Our study demonstrates that even if atmospheric CO 2 can be lowered in the future as a result of net negative CO 2 emissions, the recovery of some aspects of ocean acidification would take decades to centuries, which would have important implications for the resilience of marine ecosystems. Introduction: Fixation of major fractures plays a pivotal role in the surgical treatment of polytrauma patients. In addition to ongoing discussions regarding the optimal timing in level I trauma centers, it appears that the respective trauma systems impact the implementation of both, damage control and safe definitive surgery strategies. This study aimed to assess current standards of polytrauma treatment in a Europe-wide survey. Methods: A survey, developed by members of the polytrauma section of ESTES, was sent online via SurveyMonkey®, between July and November 2020, to 450 members of ESTES (European Society of Trauma and Emergency Surgery). Participation was voluntary and anonymity was granted. The questionnaire consisted of demographic data and included questions about the definition of "polytrauma" and the local standards for the timing of fracture fixation. Results: In total, questionnaires of 87 participants (19.3% response rate) were included. The majority of participants were senior consultants (50.57%). The mean work experience was 19 years, and on average, 17 multiple-injured patients were treated monthly. Most of the participants stated that a polytrauma patient is defined by ISS ≥ 16 (44.16%), followed by the "Berlin Definition" (25.97%). Systolic blood pressure < 90 mmHg, tachycardia or vasopressor administration (86.84%), pH deviation, base excess shift (48.68%), and lactate > 4 mmol (40.79%) or coagulopathy defined by ROTEM (40.79%) were the three most often stated indicators for shock. Local guidelines (33.77%) and the S-3 Guideline by the DGU® (23.38%) were mostly stated as a reference for the treatment of polytrauma patients. Normal coagulation (79.69%), missing administration of vasopressors (62.50%), and missing clinical signs of "SIRS" (67.19%) were stated as criteria for safe definite secondary surgery. Conclusion: Different definitions of polytrauma are used in the clinical setting. Indication for and the extent of secondary (definitive) surgery are mainly dependent on the polytrauma patient's physiology. Solid tumors such as prostate cancer (PCa) commonly develop an acidic microenvironment with pH 6.5-7.2, owing to heterogeneous perfusion, high metabolic activity, and rapid cell proliferation. In preclinical prostate cancer models, disease progression is associated with a decrease in tumor extracellular pH, suggesting that pH imaging may reflect an imaging biomarker to detect aggressive and high-risk disease. Therefore, we developed a hyperpolarized carbon-13 MRI method to image the tumor extracellular pH (pHe) and prepared it for clinical translation for detection and risk stratification of PCa. This method relies on the rapid breakdown of hyperpolarized (HP) 1,2-glycerol carbonate (carbonyl-13C) via base-catalyzed hydrolysis to produce HP 13CO32-, which is neutralized and converted to HP H13CO3-. After injection, HP H13CO3- equilibrates with HP 13CO2 in vivo and enables the imaging of pHe. Using insights gleaned from mechanistic studies performed in the hyperpolarized state, we solved issues of polarization loss during preparation in a clinical polarizer system. We successfully customized a reaction apparatus suitable for clinical application, developed clinical standard operating procedures, and validated the radiofrequency pulse sequence and imaging data acquisition with a wide range of animal models. The results demonstrated that we can routinely produce a highly polarized and safe HP H13CO3- contrast agent suitable for human injection. Preclinical imaging studies validated the reliability and accuracy of measuring acidification in healthy kidney and prostate tumor tissue. These methods were used to support an Investigational New Drug application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This methodology is now ready to be implemented in human trials, with the ultimate goal of improving the management of PCa.

Targeted intracellular delivery via receptor-mediated endocytosis requires the delivered cargo to escape the endosome to prevent lysosomal degradation. This can in principle be achieved by membrane lysis tightly restricted to endosomal membranes upon internalization to avoid general membrane insertion and lysis. Here, we describe the design of small monomeric proteins with buried histidine containing pH-responsive hydrogen bond networks and membrane permeating amphipathic helices. Of the 30 designs that were experimentally tested, all expressed in Escherichia coli, 13 were monomeric with the expected secondary structure, and 4 designs disrupted artificial liposomes in a pH-dependent manner. Mutational analysis showed that the buried histidine hydrogen bond networks mediate pH-responsiveness and control lysis of model membranes within a very narrow range of pH (6.0-5.5) with almost no lysis occurring at neutral pH. These tightly controlled lytic monomers could help mediate endosomal escape in designed targeted delivery platforms.

Climate change is affecting marine ecosystems in many ways, including raising temperatures and leading to ocean acidification. From 2014 to 2016, an extensive marine heat wave extended along the west coast of North America and had devastating effects on numerous species, including bull kelp (Nereocystis luetkeana). Bull kelp is an important foundation species in coastal ecosystems and can be affected by marine heat waves and ocean acidification; however, the impacts have not been investigated on sensitive early life stages. To determine the effects of changing temperatures and carbonate levels on Northern California's bull kelp populations, we collected sporophylls from mature bull kelp individuals in Point Arena, CA. At the Bodega Marine Laboratory, we released spores from field-collected bull kelp, and cultured microscopic gametophytes in a common garden experiment with a fully factorial design crossing modern conditions (11.63 ± 0.54°C and pH 7.93 ± 0.26) with observed extreme climate conditions (15.56 ± 0.83°C and 7.64 ± 0.32 pH). Our results indicated that both increased temperature and decreased pH influenced growth and egg production of bull kelp microscopic stages. Increased temperature resulted in decreased gametophyte survival and offspring production. In contrast, decreased pH had less of an effect but resulted in increased gametophyte survival and offspring production. Additionally, increased temperature significantly impacted reproductive timing by causing female gametophytes to produce offspring earlier than under ambient temperature conditions. Our findings can inform better predictions of the impacts of climate change on coastal ecosystems and provide key insights into environmental dynamics regulating the bull kelp lifecycle.

ObjectivesHuman blood gas stability data is limited to small sample sizes and questionable statistical techniques. We sought to determine the stability of blood gases under room temperature and slushed iced conditions in patients using survival analyses.MethodsWhole blood samples from ∼200 patients were stored in plastic syringes and kept at room temperature (22-24 °C) or in slushed ice (0.1-0.2 °C) before analysis. Arterial and venous pO2 (15-150 mmHg), pCO2 (16-72 mmHg), pH (6.73-7.52), and the CO-oximetry panel [total hemoglobin (5.4-19.3 g/dL), percentages of oxyhemoglobin (O2Hb%, 20-99%), carboxyhemoglobin (COHb, 0.1-5.4%) and methemoglobin (MetHb, 0.2-4.6%)], were measured over 5-time points. The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia's (RCPA's) criteria determined analyte instability. Survival analyses identified storage times at which 5% of the samples for various analytes became unstable.ResultsCOHb and MetHb were stable up to 3 h in slushed ice and at room temperature; pCO2, pH was stable at room temperature for about 60 min and 3 h in slushed ice. Slushed ice shortened the storage time before pO2 became unstable (from 40 to 20 min), and the instability increased when baseline pO2 was ≥60 mmHg. The storage time for pO2, pCO2, pH, and CO-oximetry, when measured together, were limited by the pO2.ConclusionsWhen assessing pO2 in plastic syringes, samples kept in slushed ice harm their stability. For simplicity's sake, the data support storage times for blood gas and CO-oximetry panels of up to 40 min at room temperature if following RCPA guidelines.

Many Archaea produce membrane-spanning lipids that enable life in extreme environments. These isoprenoid glycerol dibiphytanyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) may contain up to eight cyclopentyl and one cyclohexyl ring, where higher degrees of cyclization are associated with more acidic, hotter or energy-limited conditions. Recently, the genes encoding GDGT ring synthases, grsAB, were identified in two Sulfolobaceae; however, the distribution and abundance of grs homologs across environments inhabited by these and related organisms remain a mystery. To address this, we examined the distribution of grs homologs in relation to environmental temperature and pH, from thermal springs across Earth, where sequences derive from metagenomes, metatranscriptomes, single-cell and cultivar genomes. The abundance of grs homologs shows a strong negative correlation to pH, but a weak positive correlation to temperature. Archaeal genomes and metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) that carry two or more grs copies are more abundant in low pH springs. We also find grs in 12 archaeal classes, with the most representatives in Thermoproteia, followed by MAGs of the uncultured Korarchaeia, Bathyarchaeia and Hadarchaeia, while several Nitrososphaeria encodes >3 copies. Our findings highlight the key role of grs-catalysed lipid cyclization in archaeal diversification across hot and acidic environments.

Objective To analyze the changes in important indicators such as P-selectin, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), and pH value in platelet-rich plasma (PRP) after short-term cryopreservation at -80 ℃, and to provide a theoretical basis for the low-temperature storage of PRP. Methods Each of PRP samples prepared from the blood from 30 healthy donors was divided into 5 aliquots, with 0.5 mL retained per aliquot. These samples were de-signated as group A (fresh sample) and groups B to E (cryopreservation for 5, 10, 15, and 20 d, respectively). The pH values of the five groups were measured. The concentrations of P-selectin, PDGF, and VEGF in each group were determined by the ELISA method. The effect of groups A and E on the vascular formation capacity of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) was determined by the angiogenesis assay. Results No significant differences were observed in the concentrations of P-selectin, PDGF, and VEGF as well as the pH values between group A and groups B to E (P >0.05). Compared with the fresh sample (group A), the number of vessels formed from HUVECs in the sample frozen for 20 d (group E) was basically the same, with no significant differences (P>0.05). Conclusion The cryopreservation of PRP at -80 ℃ has no significant effects on its pH value and concentrations of P-selectin, VEGF, and PDGF, thus extending the clinical application time of PRP.

We investigated whether CO2-induced ocean acidification (OA) affects dopamine receptor-dependent behavior in bicolor damselfish (Stegastes partitus). Damselfish were kept in aquaria receiving flow through control (pH ~ 8.03; pCO2 ~ 384 μatm) or OA (pH ~ 7.64; CO2 ~ 1100 μatm) seawater at a rate of 1 L min-1. Despite this relatively fast flow rate, fish respiration further acidified the seawater in both control (pH ~7.88; pCO2 ~ 595 μatm) and OA (pH ~7.55; pCO2 ~ 1450 μatm) fish-holding aquaria. After five days of exposure, damselfish locomotion, boldness, anxiety, and aggression were assessed using a battery of behavioral tests using automated video analysis. Two days later, these tests were repeated following application of the dopamine D1 receptor agonist SKF 38393. OA-exposure induced ceiling anxiety levels that were significantly higher than in control damselfish, and SKF 38393 increased anxiety in control damselfish to a level not significantly different than that of OA-exposed damselfish. Additionally, SKF 38393 decreased locomotion and increased boldness in control damselfish but had no effect in OA-exposed damselfish, suggesting an alteration in activity of dopaminergic pathways that regulate behavior under OA conditions. These results indicate that changes in dopamine D1 receptor function affects fish behavior during exposure to OA. However, subsequent measurements of seawater sampled using syringes during the daytime (~3-4 pm local time) from crevasses in coral reef colonies, which are used as shelter by damselfish, revealed an average pH of 7.73 ± 0.03 and pCO2 of 925.8 ± 62.2 μatm; levels which are comparable to Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 8.5 predicted end-of-century mean OA levels in the open ocean. Further studies considering the immediate environmental conditions experienced by fish as well as individual variability and effect size are required to understand potential implications of the observed OA-induced behavioral effects on damselfish fitness in the wild.

Fruit juices (FJs) are among the most popular beverages frequently preferred by consumers, believing FJs contain the nutritional values, minerals, phytochemicals, vitamins, and antioxidants necessary for a healthy life. However, FJs may contain natural radionuclides such as radon (222Rn), which originates from the fruit and water utilized in their production, at levels that may pose a health risk to people. Inhalation and ingestion of 222Rn gas increases the risk of lung and stomach cancer. In this study, commercially packaged FJs from the seventeen most popular brands consumed in Turkey were analyzed for physicochemical properties and 222Rn activity concentrations to evaluate the radiological health risk. The values of pH, brix and 222Rn activity concentrations in FJ samples varied from 2.68 to 4.28, 2.50 to 14.30%, 9.6 ± 1.1 to 25.2 ± 2.5 mBq/L, respectively. The radiological health risk caused by internal exposure was evaluated for children and adults by estimating the ingestion and inhalation annual effective dose. The average values of the total annual effective dose for children and adults were found as 0.039 µSv and 0.056 µSv, respectively, which are much lower than the recommended dose of 100 µSv for drinking water. The purpose of this study was to investigate the risk factors for delayed chemotherapy–induced vomiting (DCIV) in pediatric oncology patients. We collected data on pediatric patients from a tertiary care pediatric hospital in an Asian urban center. We analyzed the risk factors for DCIV in patients by univariate analysis and logistic regression. Patients were grouped according to age by the Youden index, and differences in clinical features between the high-risk and low-risk groups were calculated. In the univariate analysis, the number of chemotherapy days, pH, and blood glucose levels were significantly associated with DCIV. In the logistic regression analysis, patient age was an independent risk factor (odds ratio [OR] = 1.013, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.005-1.021, P =.002). Children in the high-risk group had a higher grade of vomiting (P <.05). Objective The clinical significance of nuchal cord (NC) at the time of delivery is unclear. Studies have found that NC is associated with lower umbilical artery (UA) pH. Since fetal hypercarbia precedes respiratory acidosis, we hypothesize UA pCO 2 is elevated in neonates with NC at the time of delivery. Study design This is a secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study of women with full-term singleton pregnancies admitted in labor or for induction of labor at an institution with a universal umbilical cord gas policy. We compared patients with NC at the time of delivery to those without NC. Women were excluded if they did not have validated UA gases, had a major fetal anomaly, or had an intrauterine fetal demise. The primary outcome of the study was UA pCO 2. Secondary outcomes were other components of UA gas and neonatal morbidity composite. Baseline characteristics were compared utilizing chi-square or Fisher's exact test or the Student's t -test. UA gas parameters were compared using the Kruskal–Wallis test. Multivariable logistic regression was utilized to adjust for confounders. Results Of the 8,580 study participants, 7,608 had validated umbilical cord gases. The incidence of NC in the population was 24.15% (n = 1,837). UA pCO 2 was higher in those with NC than without (58 mm Hg [53–64] vs. 55 mm Hg [50–60], p < 0.01). There was a greater odds of hypercarbia in the NC group (pCO 2 > 65 mmHg; adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.97, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.72–2.25, p < 0.01). Additionally, the NC group was more likely to be mildly acidemic (pH < 7.2, aOR: 1.74, 95% CI: 1.51–2.01, p < 0.01). There was no difference in composite neonatal morbidity between the groups. Conclusion NC is associated with an increased risk of hypercarbia and acidemia. However, this is not associated with increased risk of neonatal morbidity. Background: Wireless pH monitoring allows for a definitive GERD diagnosis, which is essential for optimal medical or surgical management of the patient. However, there is no guideline recommendation on whether prolonged pH testing (72 or 96 h) provides additional benefit when compared to the standard 48-h testing. We aimed to assess whether prolonged pH monitoring diagnoses more patients with GERD, as well as compare the DeMeester score to acid exposure time as diagnostic criteria for GERD. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of consecutive adult patients who underwent wireless esophageal pH monitoring between August 2018 and July 2021. The primary outcome was the additional diagnoses of GERD (predominant acid exposure pattern) in patients who underwent 48-h versus 96-h pH monitoring. Secondary outcomes included comparison of the DeMeester score to acid exposure time and internal agreement between the first and second 48-h blocks of a prolonged 96-h pH study. Results: When comparing 48-h versus 96-h pH testing, the prolonged monitoring group was more likely to have a predominant reflux pattern and thus be diagnosed with definitive GERD by elevated DeMeester score (58.8% vs. 40.8%, p = 0.003) or acid exposure time > 6% (44.7% vs. 32.4%, p = 0.039). For patients who underwent prolonged testing, the results of monitoring beyond 48 h led to a clinically meaningful change in study interpretation in 24.8% of patients. The study data from Days 3 to 4 yielded only a 56.6% agreement with the first 2 days. Conclusions: In patients undergoing extended pH monitoring, almost half were found to have an abnormal pH study after a normal study on Day 1. An additional 25% of patients had a change in study interpretation by extending the study beyond 48 h. Introduction: The prevalence of cancer patients seeking the Paisali formula from researchers in collaboration with Khu Muang Hospital during the year 2022 reflects the cancer patients’ inclination towards exploring herbal remedies for cancer treatment. Methods: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the Paisali formula in alleviating vomiting and hematological toxicity in cancer patients using an experimental approach. The study comprised a total of 400 participants divided into two groups: an experimental group of 200 individuals receiving the Paisali drug and a control group of 200 individuals receiving a placebo. Throughout the study, toxicity levels were evaluated through laboratory blood tests conducted five times at 30-day intervals, and the results underwent independent t-test analysis. Results: The experimental group, which received 200 mg of Paisali, exhibited a statistically significant reduction in post-chemotherapy vomiting (p<0.00). Additionally, a comparison of blood test results before and after the administration of Paisali between the experimental and control groups revealed noteworthy differences in hydrogen ion concentration, hemoglobin levels, hematocrit, neutrophil count, alkaline phosphatase, aspartate transaminase, total bilirubin, and blood sugar values (p<0.00), as well as white blood cell values (p<0.02). These results suggest that the Paisali formula not only effectively reduced vomiting but also ameliorated hematological toxicity when compared to standard treatment alone. Conclusion: This study offers valuable insights into the potential advantages of incorporating the Paisali formula as an additional treatment option for managing chemotherapy-induced side effects in cancer patients. The purpose of the research was to study the nutritional content in the larvae of the black soldier fly BSF (Hermetia Illucens) during the biotransformation of organic wastes at laboratory scale in a controlled reactor, comparing growth at ambient temperatures of 27 and 29 °C, maintaining relative humidity between 65 and 80 %. Eggs were incubated until hatching, 4 mixtures of organic wastes were evaluated with carbon-nitrogen-ratio (C/N) of 14:1, 12:1, 10:1 and 8:1, composed of fresh, cooked, meat, pruning and grass wastes, with a feeding rate of 47.62 mg substrate/larva∙day for 21 days, during growth moisture, pH and ashes of the substrate were measured, length, width and mass of 3% of the population were measured in the larvae. Moisture ashes, ethereal extract, organic nitrogen and crude protein of the larvae of each trial were characterized, obtaining moisture between 64-73, ashes 3.5-5.7, ethereal extract 28-35, crude protein 48-51 and organic nitrogen 7.6- 8.4 % at 27 °C; moisture between 53-60, ashes 4.6-6.4, ethereal extract 34-39, crude protein 41-52 and organic nitrogen 6.6-8.3 % at 29 °C. The bioconversion rate was between 16-25 % at 27 °C and 9-20 % at 29 °C, the conversion efficiency to protein was between 7-13% at 27 °C and 3.6-9.7 % at 29 °C; the conversion efficiency to fat was between 1.7-8.4% at 27 °C and 3.4-6.9 % at 29 °C; the growth rates show that the larval development speed is an exponential model between the sixth and ninth day of measurement with C/N 14:1 and 10:1 at 27 °C and between the sixth and eighth day with C/N 12:1 and 10:1 at 29 °C. Background: Mineralization‐promoting peptide‐3 (MPP3) is a new biomimetic remineralization agent. Aim: To assess the remineralization efficiency of MPP3, either alone or in combination with fluoride gel. Design: The samples were divided into four groups: control, 1.23% fluoride gel, 10% MPP3 gel, and 1.23% fluoride gel + 10% MPP3. Following the application of remineralization agents (4 min), the samples remained in a pH‐cycling model (37°C, 4 weeks). Microhardness, microcomputed tomography (micro‐CT), polarized light microscopy (PLM), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE‐SEM) analysis were conducted. RM‐ANOVA, one‐way ANOVA, and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were used for statistical analysis, and a significance level of p <.05 was employed. Results: Mineralization‐promoting peptide 3 and fluoride gel + MPP3 increased the microhardness of the enamel compared with initial values in each group (p <.05). Mineralization‐promoting peptide 3 successfully maintained the mineral density of enamel, although the cariogenic pH‐cycling and PLM results indicated that the lesion depth (μm) was significantly lower in the fluoride gel + MPP3 group (27.0336 ± 12.53650) than in the control group (37.3907 ± 12.76002, p <.05). Conclusion: The combined use of MPP3 with fluoride gel enhanced the caries‐protective and mineralization‐promoting effects of fluoride. Background: There is growing evidence that perinatal HIV infection and exposure affect salivary pH and flow rate in children in most parts of the world, but not against the background of caries and the African demographic. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of HIV infection as well as exposure on salivary properties and their influence upon the dental caries experience among school-aged children in Nigeria. Method: This cross-sectional study assessed the salivary flow rates and salivary pH of HIV infected and exposed school-aged (4–11) children receiving care at a Nigerian tertiary hospital. A total of 266 consenting participants which comprised of three groups as follows: (1) HIV Infected (HI) (n = 87), (2) HIV Exposed and Uninfected (HEU) (n = 82) and (3) HIV Unexposed and Uninfected (HUU) (n = 97) were recruited for the study. Questionnaires completed by parents/guardians were used for data collection. Three calibrated dentists performed oral examinations for dental caries. International Caries Detection and Assessment Scores (ICDAS) was used and presented as dmft/DMFT. Salivary pH was measured using MColourpHast™ pH indicator strips, while salivary flow rate was determined by collecting unstimulated whole saliva using the suction method. Data analysis relied on comparative statistics to determine the correlation between HIV exposure and infection on salivary pH and flow rates. Result: Across the groups, (HI, HEU, and HUU) mean pH of the HI was significantly less than that of HEU and HUU. Similarly, there was a statistically significant difference in the SFR across the three groups (p = 0.004). Other variables such as gender, age and oral hygiene status expressed by the gingival inflammatory scores had no significant influence on the pH and SFR of study participants. There was a rather unexpected positive correlation of DMFT of HI and HEU groups with increasing salivary flow rate; though, the relationship was weak and not significant. Conclusion: Perinatal HIV exposure and infection significantly impact salivary pH and flow rate among school-aged children in Nigeria. The findings of this study imply that HIV infection influenced the salivary pH, while HIV maternal exposure (without infection) impacted salivary flow rates when compared to the controls. Non-acidic hydrogen evolution systems have a low concentration of hydrogen ions, and the H2 evolution reaction (HER) is often limited by the water dissociation step. Preparing catalysts that can accelerate water dissociation is a common method for achieving high-efficiency evolution of hydrogen. In the current work, the performance of a hydrogen evolution system was first improved by introducing CO2 to transform the presence status of H2O. According to density functional theory (DFT) calculations, water reacts with CO2 to produce carbonic acid which can reduce the barrier of adsorbed H generation. Subsequently, under same pH conditions, a constructed dye-sensitized Ni–CO2 system shows an H2 evolution rate 1.5 times higher than that shown by dye-sensitized Ni. Kinetics of oxidation of malic acid by tetraphenylphosphonium chlorochoramate has been investigated in 50% acetic acid and 50% water medium. Tetraphenylphosphonium chlorochoramate, malic acid, and hydrogen ion concentrations are all first order for the reaction. Oxidation rates rises with a reduction in the solvent's dielectric constant. It denotes the interaction of ions and dipoles during the rate-determining step. By increasing the quantity of sodium perchlorate, there is no influence on the rate constant. No polymerisation with acrylonitrile occurs, and it is proved that there are no free radicals. At four different temperatures, the reaction's rate has been measured. Background: Freezing is a crucial technique in reproductive science utilized for the preservation of sperm samples. However, the process of freezing and thawing sperm can result in detrimental effects on sperm quality. One of the major mechanisms underlying this decline in sperm quality is the generation of reactive oxygen species during the freeze process. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effects of magnesium oxide nanoparticles on frozen sperm parameters. Methods: Semen samples were collected from 8 fertile men, aged 30 to 42 years, with normozoospermia, following 3 to 5 days of abstinence. The samples were divided into fresh (n=3), freeze (n=3), and control (n=2) groups. Three fresh experimental groups were only exposed to MgO NPs with concentrations of 5, 25, and 50 μg/ml and three freezing experimental groups were frozen after being treated with MgO NPs, thawed, and analyzed after 30 min. Results: Our findings revealed that the progressive movement and vitality of sperm experienced a significant decline, while non-progressive and immotile sperm showed a notable increase in both fresh and frozen experimental groups exposed to MgO NPs. However, the application of MgO NPs during fresh and freezing processes demonstrated an effective preservation of pH, morphology, and DNA fragmentation in sperm cells. Conclusion: The analysis revealed that MgO NPs negatively impact sperm motility and viability in both fresh and freeze analysis.
