Abstract

[Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]ARCEAU; Distributed hydrological models are valuable tools that can be used to support water management in catchments. However, the complexity of management issues, the variety of modelling objectives, and the variable availability of data require a flexible way to customize models and adapt them to each individual problem. Environmental modelling frameworks offer such flexibility; they are designed to build and run integrated models on the basis of reusable and exchangeable components. This paper presents the LIQUID® framework, developed by Hydrowide since 2005. The purpose of developing LIQUID® was to provide both easier integration of hydrological processes and preservation of their characteristic temporal and spatial scales. It suits a wide range of applications, both in terms of spatial scales and of process conceptualisations. LIQUID® is able to synchronize different time steps, to handle irregular geometries, and to simulate complex connections between components, in particular involving feedback. The paper presents the concepts of LIQUID® and the technical choices made to meet the above requirements, with focuses on the simulation run system and on the spatial discretization of process components. The use of the framework is illustrated by five application cases associated with contrasted spatial and temporal scales.

Abstract

[Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]ARCEAU; International audience; This paper presents a detailed analysis of the September 8-9 2002 flash flood event in the Gard region (southern France) using two distributed hydrological models: CVN built within the LIQUID® hydrological platform and MARINE. The models differ in terms of spatial discretization, infiltration and water redistribution representation, and river flow transfer. MARINE can also account for sub-surface lateral flow. Both models are set up using the same available information, namely a DEM and a pedology map. They are forced with high resolution radar rainfall data over a set of 18 sub-catchments ranging from 2.5 to 99 km2 and are run without calibration. To begin with, models simulations are assessed against post field estimates of the time of peak and the maximum peak discharge showing a fair agreement for both models. The results are then discussed in terms of flow dynamics, runoff coefficients and soil saturation dynamics. The contribution of the sub-surface lateral flow is also quantified using the MARINE model. This analysis highlights that rainfall remains the first controlling factor of flash flood dynamics. High rainfall peak intensities are very influential of the maximum peak discharge for both models, but especially for the CVN model which has a simplified overland flow transfer. The river bed roughness also influences the peak intensity and time. Soil spatial representation is shown to have a significant role on runoff coefficients and on the spatial variability of saturation dynamics. Simulated soil saturation is found to be strongly related with soil depth and initial storage deficit maps, due to a full saturation of most of the area at the end of the event. When activated, the signature of sub-surface lateral flow is also visible in the spatial patterns of soil saturation with higher values concentrating along the river network. However, the data currently available do not allow the assessment of both patterns. The paper concludes with a set of recommendations for enhancing field observations in order to progress in process understanding and gather a larger set of data to improve the realism of distributed models.

Abstract

International audience; Flash floods represent the most destructive natural hazard in the Mediterranean region, causing around one billion Euros worth of damage in France over the last two decades. Flash floods are associated with extreme and rare rainfall events and usually occur in ungauged river basins. Amongst them, small-ungauged catchments are recognized as the most vulnerable to storm driven flash floods. In order to limit the damages to the population, there is a need to improve our understanding and the simulation tools for these events. In order to provide information over a whole region, hydrological models applicable at this scale, and able to take into account the spatial variability of rainfall and catchment characteristics, must be proposed. This paper presents such a regional distributed approach applied to the 8-9 September 2002 extreme event which affected the Gard region in the south-east of France. In order to identify the variables and catchment characteristics which require improved knowledge, two distributed hydrological models were set up on a set of catchments, with sizes ranging from 2.5 to 99 km2. The models differ in terms of spatial discretization and process representation. They were forced using radar data with a 1 km2 spatial resolution and 5 min time step. The model parameters were specified using the available information, namely a digital terrain model and a soil data base. The latter provides information about soil texture, soil porosity and soil depths. Soil hydraulic properties were defined using pedo-transfer functions. Data from a post-flood field survey of maximum peak discharge were used to assess the quality of the simulations. A reasonable agreement between modeled and observed values was obtained. Sensitivity studies were then performed to asses the respective impact of rainfall estimation and soil variability on the simulated discharge. The analysis shows that rainfall remains the first controlling factor of flash flood dynamics and that high resolution spatial and temporal data are required in order to properly simulate peak discharge and flow dynamics for a range of scales. The river bed roughness also influences the peak intensity and time. Soil spatial representation is shown to have a significant role on runoff coefficients and on the spatial variability of saturation dynamics. For some catchments, the impact of soil properties on the simulated discharges was of the same order of magnitude as the impact of the rainfall estimation. The results were very similar for the two distributed models, despite their difference in structure. They show that the poor knowledge of soil properties, mainly soil depth, initial soil water content and saturated hydraulic conductivity is detrimental to robust estimation of discharge. A better knowledge of these variables is therefore recommended. In particular soil depth is required. Post field estimation of peak discharge were very valuable for the regional assessment of the methodology, but must be complemented with data of the whole hydrographs to reduce the uncertainty in flow dynamics and runoff production. Effort towards improved quantitative rainfall estimation using a network of radars must also be continued. The results of the study are used in the design of the future HyMeX experiment, aiming at improving the Mediterranean water balance and the knowledge of extreme events. A strategy based on gauged nested catchments is set up. Detailed measurements of the water balance (discharge, soil moisture, evapotranspiration) are proposed on small catchments of about 1 km2 in order to improve the process understanding. An intermediate scale is defined for catchments of about 100 km2 with distributed hydrometry, based on Large Scale Image Velocimetry to tackle the change of scale problem. Finally, operational data are used at larger scale of about 1000 km2. These data will also be useful to propose improved modelling tools applicable on ungauged catchments.

Abstract

International audience; Flash floods result from the combination of meteorological and hydrological conditions. Recognition of the coupled meteorological / hydrological nature of flash floods is now evident in interpretative studies and in the development of predictive models. There is a real need for research to improve the understanding of the major atmospheric and hydrologic factors leading to extreme flood events, especially those affecting small to medium ungauged basins. It has been shown that most of flash flood events can be attributed to stationary Mesoscale Convective Systems (MCSs). Due to their very localized nature, the observation of such event using a gauging network is problematic. Weather radars can provide better spatial rainfall estimations, even if radar assessment of rainfall can be significantly influenced by the orography itself. Therefore accurate monitoring of severe storm rainfall intensities remains a major challenge. In terms of the hydrological processes associated to flash flood, it is known that the knowledge of the soil characteristics is an important source of uncertainty in the understanding of the hydrological behavior of the catchments. This contribution presents a modelling approach aiming at quantifying the respective impact of rainfall estimation and soil variability on the simulated discharge for an extreme event in southern France. The method is illustrated for two ungauged medium size basins using different radar and gauge rainfall estimates and an existing soil data base. The hydrological distributed modelling approach was implemented within the numerical modelling LIQUID platform on the Cévennes-Vivarais region, used without any calibration phase, and validated with a regional approach using distributed post-flood estimation (Braud et al., EGU2009). For the same event, previous work using an event-based TOPMODEL approach with a calibration phase, showed that the model efficiency significantly increases when the spatial variability of rainfall is taken into account. Nevertheless, for some of the catchments, the mis-performances remained unexplained. The model was run using different radar image treatments and the sensitivity on the hydrological response was assessed. The results show the important contribution of the volume-scanning protocol for the quantitative radar rainfall estimation at regional and local scale. Nevertheless, this study also highlights the importance of the description of the soil types to properly set up the hydrological model.

Abstract

This paper presents a modeling study aiming at quantifying the possible impact of soil characteristics on the hydrological response of small ungauged catchments in a context of extreme events. The study focuses on the September 2002 event in the Gard region (South-Eastern France), which led to catastrophic flash-floods. The proposed modeling approach is able to take into account rainfall variability and soil profiles variability. Its spatial discretization is determined using Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and a soil map. The model computes infiltration, ponding and vertical soil water distribution, as well as river discharge. In order to be applicable to ungauged catchments, the model is set up without any calibration and the soil parameter specification is based on an existing soil database. The model verification is based on a regional evaluation using 17 estimated discharges obtained from an extensive post-flood investigation. Thus, this approach provides a spatial view of the hydrological response across a large range of scales. To perform the simulations, radar rainfall estimations are used at a 1 km2 and 5 min resolution. To specify the soil hydraulic properties, two types of pedotransfer function (PTF) are compared. It is shown that the PTF including information about soil structure reflects better the spatial variability that can be encountered in the field. The study is focused on four small ungauged catchments of less than 10 km2, which experienced casualties. Simulated specific peak discharges are found to be in agreement with estimations from a post-event in situ investigation. Examining the dynamics of simulated infiltration and saturation degrees, two different behaviors are shown which correspond to different runoff production mechanisms that could be encountered within catchments of less than 10 km2. They produce simulated runoff coefficients that evolve in time and highlight the variability of the infiltration capacity of the various soil types. Therefore, we propose a cartography distinguishing between areas prone to saturation excess and areas prone only to infiltration excess mechanisms. The questions raised by this modeling study will be useful to improve field observations, aiming at better understanding runoff generation for these extreme events and examine the possibility for early warning, even in very small ungauged catchments.

Cet article présente la stratégie expérimentale et de collecte de données mise en ½uvre dans le projet et les pistes proposées pour l'amélioration des outils de modélisation existants et le développement d'outils novateurs. Enfin, nous présentons comment ces outils seront utilisés pour simuler et quantifier l'impact des modifications d'occupation des sols et/ou du climat sur les régimes hydrologiques des bassins étudiés. / The aim of the AVuPUR project is to enhance our understanding and modelling capacity of water fluxes within suburban watersheds. Abstract

Summary Distributed hydrological models are useful tools for process understanding and water management, especially in peri-urban catchments where the landscape heterogeneity is large, caused by a patchwork of natural and urbanized areas. This paper presents the Peri-Urban Model for landscape MAnagement (PUMMA) built within the LIQUID® modeling framework, specifically designed to study the hydrology of peri-urban catchments. It combines rural and urban hydrological models, and is used for process understanding. The originality of PUMMA is to follow a fully object-oriented approach, for both model mesh building and process representation. Urban areas, represented by cadastral units and rural areas divided in Hydrological Response Units are thus modeled with different interacting process modules. This provides a detailed representation of the runoff generation on natural and impervious areas. Furthermore, the exchange between process modules facilitates the simulation of subsurface and overland flow, as well as groundwater drainage by sewer pipes. Several drainage networks can coexist and interact (e.g. via storm water overflow devices) and water can be stored in retention basins, which allows the modeling of complex suburban drainage systems with multiple outlets. The model is then applied to the Chaudanne catchment (2.7 km 2 ), located in the suburbs of Lyon, France. The uncalibrated model results show the importance of surface runoff from impervious areas for summer events and flow contributions from rural zones for winter events. Furthermore, the model reveals that the retention capacity of the Chaudanne catchment is larger than for classical urban catchments due to the peri-urban character of the catchment.

International audience; In distributed hydrological models, elementary modelling units are often derived from raster and vector geographical maps such as digital elevation models (DEM), land use and soil properties maps. Model pre-processing can be defined as the operations transforming raw GIS data into the adequate modelling units. This paper describes our experience with open-source GIS for these pre-processing operations through a set of examples. The softwares tested were PostGIS, OpenJump, OrbisGIS, GRASS, SAGA, MapWindow and QuantumGIS. The pre-processing operations dealt with DEM processing, topology corrections, and advanced editing of vector layers. None of the tested software provided a ready to use solution. However GRASS GIS appeared as the most promising candidate for performing all the preprocessing operations and automating them. Although sometimes tricky to handle by GIS non-expert users, open-source GIS allow easy tests and comparisons and therefore are well suited to research purposes.

Abstract

International audience; To better handle landscape heterogeneities in distributed hydrological modeling, an earlier work proposed a discretisation based on nested levels, which leads to fully unstructured modeling meshes. Upon such a discretisation, traditional numerical solutions must be adapted, especially to describe lateral flow between the unstructured mesh elements. In this paper, we illustrated the feasibility of the numeric solution of the diffusion equation, representing groundwater flow, using unstructured meshes. Thus, a two-dimensional groundwater model (BOUSS2D), adapted to convex unstructured and irregular meshes was developed. It is based on the approximation of the two-dimensional Boussinesq equation using numeric techniques suitable for non-orthogonal grids. The handling of vertical and horizontal aquifer heterogeneities is also addressed. The fluxes through the interfaces among joined mesh elements are estimated by the finite volume method and the gradient approximation method. Comparisons between the BOUSS2D predictions and analytical solutions or predictions from existing codes suggest the acceptable performance of the BOUSS2D model. These results therefore encourage the further development of hydrological models using unstructured meshes that are capable of better representing the landscape heterogeneities.

Abstract

[Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]ARCEAU; International audience; In the general context of field experiment design, this paper presents a modeling study that quantifies the respective impact of rainfall estimation and soil variability on the simulated discharge for an extreme event in southern France. The CVN distributed hydrological model, built within the LIQUID® modeling platform is used. The method is illustrated for two medium sized catchments, Saumane (99 km2) and Uzès (88 km2) using raingauges and two radar estimates. The soil properties are extracted from an existing soil database provided for the whole region. The model parameter specification uses available observation and a priori hydrological knowledge. No parameter adjustment is performed. For model evaluation on the regional scale, simulated maximum peak discharges are compared with post-flood estimations for 32 catchments. The area of these catchments ranges from 2.5 to 99 km2 and model results are satisfactory. Then, the study focuses on the Saumane and Uzès catchments. A sensitivity analysis highlights the role of the Manning roughness coefficient on the simulated hydrographs dynamics. The impact of the bottom boundary condition of the infiltration and water redistribution module is also shown for the gauged Saumane catchment. Then the impact of rainfall input and soil spatial variability is presented. The results show that (i) the use of radar data is necessary to properly simulate the flood dynamics; (ii) although radar volume-scanning strategy has been shown to give more accurate results on a pixel/gauge comparison of the rainfall estimations, it is not necessarily the case when catchment averaged amounts are considered, especially for catchments in mountainous areas; (iii) the impact of the variability in soil properties on the simulated discharges is of the same order of magnitude as the impact of differences in rainfall estimation; (iv) the flood dynamics presents two phases: the first one, mainly controlled by the soil properties and the second one, since the soils are saturated, controlled by the rainfall variability. Therefore, uncertainties on both observations need to be mitigated in order to improve flash-flood understanding.

International audience; Flash floods represent the most destructive natural hazard in the Mediterranean region, causing around one billion Euros worth of damage in France over the last two decades. Flash floods are associated with extreme and rare rainfall events and usually occur in ungauged river basins. Amongst them, small-ungauged catchments are recognized as the most vulnerable to storm driven flash floods. In order to limit the damages to the population, there is a need to improve our understanding and the simulation tools for these events. In order to provide information over a whole region, hydrological models applicable at this scale, and able to take into account the spatial variability of rainfall and catchment characteristics, must be proposed. This paper presents such a regional distributed approach applied to the 8-9 September 2002 extreme event which affected the Gard region in the south-east of France. In order to identify the variables and catchment characteristics which require improved knowledge, two distributed hydrological models were set up on a set of catchments, with sizes ranging from 2.5 to 99 km2. The models differ in terms of spatial discretization and process representation. They were forced using radar data with a 1 km2 spatial resolution and 5 min time step. The model parameters were specified using the available information, namely a digital terrain model and a soil data base. The latter provides information about soil texture, soil porosity and soil depths. Soil hydraulic properties were defined using pedo-transfer functions. Data from a post-flood field survey of maximum peak discharge were used to assess the quality of the simulations. A reasonable agreement between modeled and observed values was obtained. Sensitivity studies were then performed to asses the respective impact of rainfall estimation and soil variability on the simulated discharge. The analysis shows that rainfall remains the first controlling factor of flash flood dynamics and that high resolution spatial and temporal data are required in order to properly simulate peak discharge and flow dynamics for a range of scales. The river bed roughness also influences the peak intensity and time. Soil spatial representation is shown to have a significant role on runoff coefficients and on the spatial variability of saturation dynamics. For some catchments, the impact of soil properties on the simulated discharges was of the same order of magnitude as the impact of the rainfall estimation. The results were very similar for the two distributed models, despite their difference in structure. They show that the poor knowledge of soil properties, mainly soil depth, initial soil water content and saturated hydraulic conductivity is detrimental to robust estimation of discharge. A better knowledge of these variables is therefore recommended. In particular soil depth is required. Post field estimation of peak discharge were very valuable for the regional assessment of the methodology, but must be complemented with data of the whole hydrographs to reduce the uncertainty in flow dynamics and runoff production. Effort towards improved quantitative rainfall estimation using a network of radars must also be continued. 4th HyMeX Workshop, 8-10 June 2010, Bologna, Italy The results of the study are used in the design of the future HyMeX experiment, aiming at improving the Mediterranean water balance and the knowledge of extreme events. A strategy based on gauged nested catchments is set up. Detailed measurements of the water balance (discharge, soil moisture, evapotranspiration) are proposed on small catchments of about 1 km2 in order to improve the process understanding. An intermediate scale is defined for catchments of about 100 km2 with distributed hydrometry, based on Large Scale Image Velocimetry to tackle the change of scale problem. Finally, operational data are used at larger scale of about 1000 km2. These data will also be useful to propose improved modelling tools applicable on ungauged catchments. The modelling approach is currently enriched to provide continuous simulations in order to study the sensitivity of the hydrological response to initial conditions. These results will also be used to determine where observations of soil moisture offer the best potential for improving our understanding.

Abstract

International audience; Distributed simulation models are valuable tools for addressing challenging questions such as the impact of land use or climate change on water resources, or for assessing the efficiency of mitigation solutions for reducing water pollution. Modelling platforms fasten the development of such models by providing tools to perform ancillary tasks such as input pre-processing or output visualisation, templates for process modules construction and coupling mechanisms to build integrated models from the available modules. Such a platform, called LIQUID (Viallet et al., 2006) is under development by Hydrowide with the collaboration of Cemagref. The main stream of models built in LIQUID follows object-oriented principles: the landscape is discretized into hydro-landscapes (Dehotin and Braud, 2008) representing hydrological functional units, which construction depends on the model objectives, data availability and process representation. They usually form very irregular geometries with surfacic, linear or point elements. A model takes as input data vector descriptions of these hydro-landscapes, querying a PostgreSQL/PostGIS database. This paper deals with the pre-processing operations and difficulties encountered for obtaining these input data using open-source GIS. Input data are derived from Digital Elevation Models (raster), and vector maps such as geology, soil properties, land use, but also the hydrographic network, possible other networks of interest (roads, sewer network) or punctual informations, as for example measurement points. Vector data are usually in the ESRI shape, MapInfo MIF/MID or PostgreSQL/PostGIS (WKT/WKB) formats. Data pre-processing operations include DEM processing (calculations and classification of slope, and flow directions), delineation of subcatchments according to the hydrographic network, successive intersections/fusions of polygon layers (land use/soil properties for instance), verification of the connectivity of the hydrographic network from upstream to downstream, boundary recognition and topology extraction from the hydro-landscape layer. As we could not find a unique open-source GIS providing all the required functionalities, we developed strategies using combinations of several softwares: SAGA GIS or MapWindow GIS for DEM processing, OpenJump, Quantum GIS or PostGIS for vector editing and processing, OpenJump and OrbisGIS for topology extraction. Yet one of the most severe limitations in these vector-processing GIS is the way to verify and handle properly topology constraints. We encountered several problems (failure of PostGIS functions for example) due to slightly incorrect geometries that were sometimes generated by the processing operations themselves. Another limitation is the lack of facilities for developing procedures (PL/pgSQL for example) that are needed to automate the pre-processing operations. Therefore, up to now, some of these operations have been processed either manually, or within the ESRI ArcInfo software. We are considering using the open OrbisGIS platform or GRASS GIS to develop such functionalities. The presentation will highlight the problems through representative examples encountered in real case studies. These case studies deal with the impact of land use features, for examples hedges, ditches, or even urbanization on the hydrological regime of small to medium size catchments, or with the influence of rainfall and soil description on the simulation of flash floods. They cover several spatial and temporal scales. As perspective, the presentation will also give insight into the needs for visualization of model results like GIS temporal extensions or links with statistical computing open-source softwares to visualize spatial time series.

[Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]ARCEAU; International audience; Due to the development of urbanisation and the associated pollutions, peri-urban rivers face an increasing pressure on the receiving waters and an enhancement of floods. In order to limit the risks and define adapted management scenarios, it is important to identify the key factors over which action is possible. In particular, due to the Water Framework Directive, discharge of polluted water into rivers must be limited and actions must be undertaken in order to restore the ecological quality of water. In this context, integrated modelling tools, taking into account anthropogenic effects on the water cycle are interesting as they provide ways to test and evaluate the efficiency of different management scenarios. However improvements are still required to derive tools allowing a continuous and long term modelling of the hydrological cycle in peri-urban areas. The models must take into account the surface heterogeneity (mixture of rural and urbanised areas), and also the natural and artificial water pathways, which influence the water quality. These questions are the focus of the AVuPUR (Assessing the Vulnerability of Peri-Urban Rivers) project. Its aims are 1) to provide a better description of the heterogeneity of peri-urban catchments and of the associated water pathways using field survey, GIS and remote sensing analysis of high resolution images; 2) to provide long term detailed simulation models of the hydrological cycle in peri-urban catchments to increase our understanding of the processes involved; 3) to improve existing hydrological models with a better handling of the urbanised areas in order to derive tools usable by stakeholders; 4) to run long term simulations of the hydrological cycle using past and future land-use and climate scenarios and quantify the impact on the hydrological regime. The project focuses on two experimental catchments: the Yzeron catchment (147 km2), a peri-urban catchment located in the west of Lyon (south-east of France) and the Chézine catchment (34 km2) located close to the city of Nantes (west of France). Both catchments are part of hydrometeorological observatories which ensures a long-term monitoring of the catchments. Both catchments experience a rapid increase of urbanisation. They are located in two contrasted climates and physiographic contexts: Mediterranean type climate and marked topography for the Yzeron catchment and oceanic climate with rather flat areas for the Chézine catchment. This will allow testing the robustness and transferability of the developed approaches. The presentation will focus on the data which are currently acquired in the framework of the project: rainfall, streamflow, water levels in ephemeral reaches, lidar survey, geophysical surveys, infiltration tests. A diachronic analysis of land use since the 50th is also performed using satellite and aerial photographs. Some work is also planned to determine future land use scenarios of urbanisation and water management. Urban data bank provided by the Grand Lyon and Nantes-Métropole services are also analysed in order to document the change in water pathways due to urbanisation. The paper will present an overview of these data and first results of their analysis in terms of hydrological functioning and water pathways. The modelling strategy, which will rely on these data, will also be presented.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents a modeling study aiming at quantifying the possible impact of soil characteristics on the hydrological response of small ungauged catchments in a context of extreme events. The study focuses on the September 2002 event in the Gard region (South-Eastern France), which led to catastrophic flash-floods. The proposed modeling approach is able to take into account rainfall variability and soil profiles variability. Its spatial discretization is determined using Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and a soil map. The model computes infiltration, ponding and vertical soil water distribution, as well as river discharge. In order to be applicable to ungauged catchments, the model is set up without any calibration and the soil parameter specification is based on an existing soil database. The model verification is based on a regional evaluation using 17 estimated discharges obtained from an extensive post-flood investigation. Thus, this approach provides a spatial view of the hydrological response across a large range of scales. To perform the simulations, radar rainfall estimations are used at a 1 km2 and 5 min resolution. To specify the soil hydraulic properties, two types of pedotransfer function (PTF) are compared. It is shown that the PTF including information about soil structure reflects better the spatial variability that can be encountered in the field. The study is focused on four small ungauged catchments of less than 10 km2, which experienced casualties. Simulated specific peak discharges are found to be in agreement with estimations from a post-event in situ investigation. Examining the dynamics of simulated infiltration and saturation degrees, two different behaviors are shown which correspond to different runoff production mechanisms that could be encountered within catchments of less than 10 km2. They produce simulated runoff coefficients that evolve in time and highlight the variability of the infiltration capacity of the various soil types. Therefore, we propose a cartography distinguishing between areas prone to saturation excess and areas prone only to infiltration excess mechanisms. The questions raised by this modeling study will be useful to improve field observations, aiming at better understanding runoff generation for these extreme events and examine the possibility for early warning, even in very small ungauged catchments.

Pour mener à bien cette tâche, il est donc important de disposer, sur ces bassins versants péri-urbains, d'outils de modélisation intégrée du cycle de l'eau, couplés à une stratégie de mesure et de suivi adaptée afin d'établir un diagnostic de l'état actuel et d'évaluer l'impact de différents scénarios d'aménagement. L'objectif général du projet est donc de progresser sur la simulation de long terme du cycle hydrologique des bassins péri-urbains en prenant mieux en compte la variabilité spatiale et temporelle des facteurs naturels (topographie, sols, géologie) et anthropiques (occupation des sols, routes, zones urbanisées, déversoirs d'orage, réseaux d'eau pluviale) qui peuvent l'influencer. Le projet se propose de développer/améliorer des outils de modélisation de ces bassins versants en s'appuyant sur une instrumentation renforcée et une description fine de l'espace. Ces modèles seront ensuite utilisés pour quantifier l'impact des modifications d'occupation des sols sur le régime hydrologique (notamment la fréquence des crues) et la géomorphologie des cours d'eau. Les sites d'étude choisis sont deux bassins versants soumis à une urbanisation rapide en périphérie de Lyon (Yzeron, 150 km2, voir Figure 1) et de Nantes (Chézine, 34 km2, Figure 7). Le premier est situé en zone de relief assez marqué avec un climat de type Méditerranéen. Le second est en zone de plaine avec un climat de type océanique. Les gestionnaires de ces bassins versant sont partie prenante du projet.

Abstract

International audience; A distributed hydrological model dedicated to the assessment of the influence of the influence of landscape management practices on the hydrology a small agricultural catchments is presented. It was built using an environmental modelling framework named LIQUID. The model consists of interconnected modules representing the major hydrological processes in subsurface-drained fields, non-drained fields, hedgerows and in the hydrographic network, and uses an irregular mesh that reproduces the real shapes of the different landscape features. A model prototype was applied to the Fontaine du Theil experimental catchment (1.28 km²) in France. A six month simulation was performed in a winter period. The first results are physically consistent, in spite of limitations for simulating the seasonal variation of the discharge at the catchment outlet. Therefore we can consider that the modelling options that were chosen are promising.

Abstract

The simulation of hydrological fluxes within a catchment involves various processes with contrasted temporal and spatial scales. All these processes must be included into an integrated modelling of the catchment. The modeller must thus determine the governing processes and their representation within the model. He must also define a time and space discretization of the catchment, consistent with the characteristic time and space scales of each process. The discretization should also avoid to suppress singularities, such as ditches or hedges, which might play an important role in the catchment hydrology. To address this question, we propose an object-based modelling approach that consists of three steps: (1) for a given catchment, identification of the important hydrological objects; (2) modelling of each object with appropriate process conceptualizations, spatial and temporal scales; (3) coupling of these object-based representations to obtain a catchment-scale model. This approach was implemented using the LIQUID modelling framework, in order to assess the influence of landscape management practices on the hydrology of the Fontaine du Theil catchment in Brittany (France, 1.28 km2). The catchment scale model consists of modules representing the major hydrological processes in subsurface-drained fields, non-drained fields, hedgerows and in the river network. These modules use different process conceptualizations, from physically-based (Richards equation) to more conceptual capacity-based approaches. Their spatial extent respect the real shapes of the corresponding landscape features. The spatial coupling between the modules is then realized through saturated flow exchange interfaces that are compatible with the different modules. The first results are encouraging and show that the object-based modelling approach is relevant. The LIQUID modelling framework appears to be a promising tool to address the question of spatial and temporal coupling of hydrological processes.

Abstract

In September 2002 a flash flood killed 23 human lives and generated 1.2 billion Euros of damages in less than 24 hours over an area of 20000 km2 located in the south of France. The Gard river basin was hit by a storm that locally received more than 600 mm in one day. The Mesoscale Convective System firstly remained stationary for 14 hours then moved West, and finally interacted with a cold front moving. This storm triggered catastrophic flash floods on many upstream tributaries as well as the most important flood ever reported of the major rivers (Gard, Ceze and Vidourle). Postevent hydrological investigation using interviews of witnesses and river cross-sections surveys allowed estimation of specific peak discharges of 17 watersheds, the size of which ranged from 10 to 100 km2. It was noticeable that most of the estimations gave specific peak discharges of at least 5 m3.s−1.km2 whereas the 10 years return period discharge, in this region, is about 2 m3.s−1.km2for such catchment sizes. Below the 600 mm rain area, peak discharges even exceed 20 m3.s−1.km2, which was the most important value ever reported for watersheds of similar areas. The prediction of such extreme events remains an open question due to scarcity of observations and the unknown individual hydrological behavior of very small basins. The aggregation of small basins contributions along the river network remains also largely unknown. In order to study runoff generation on these small catchments, we implemented a physically based hydrological model developed under the numerical LIQUID platform on the Cévennes Vivarais region.

Les modèles hydrologiques spatialisés sont des outils qui permettent de prendre en compte l'hétérogénéité des surfaces continentales et des entrées dans la modélisation. Ils peuvent donc permettre d'étudier l'impact de modifications anthropiques ou climatiques sur les ressources en eau. L'expérience a montré que les modèles existants ne présentaient pas toute la souplesse nécessaire à l'introduction de nouveaux processus. La prise en compte des hétérogénéités de l'espace dont la géométrie est en général complexe avec un mélange d'éléments linéaires (les réseaux) et surfaciques (occupation du sol, etc..) est aussi assez difficile. Ceci a conduit à repenser la manière de découper l'espace et la modélisation hydrologique pour aboutir à une meilleure représentation de la réalité.

Sur les petits bassins versants ruraux, la question du fonctionnement hydrologique est intimement liée à la façon dont ces bassins sont aménagés. Le façonnage du paysage par la présence humaine et l'activité agricole (découpage de parcellaire, drainage de certaines parcelles, plantation de haies en bord de parcelles, creusement de fossés) peut modifier profondément les processus hydrologiques, et avoir des conséquences importantes, notamment en termes de pollutions diffuses d'origine agricole (nutriments ou produits phytosanitaires). Si l'on veut répondre à des questions d'aménagement de ces bassins pour par exemple limiter les pollutions, on a besoin de modélisations hydrologiques précises, représentant explicitement les différents éléments du paysage susceptibles d'avoir un effet hydrologique important, y compris dans leurs formes géométriques et leurs positionnements dans l'espace.

Abstract

Simulation models are valuable tools to answer various complex environmental problems and compare the consequences of different scenarios of land-use or climate changes. The community recognizes the need for a flexible modeling environment, allowing the building of integrated models customized for a specific case study and taking into account the objectives of the planners or scientists, the landscape specificity and the data availability. To fulfill this goal, such an environment should accelerate the development of interoperable models by reusing libraries and templates and enable to assemble modules into an integrated model with a minimum of coding and knowledge about the internal structure of the modules. This paper presents such a platform, called LIQUID, which is developed for multi-scale integrated and distributed hydrological modeling.

Abstract

The LIQUID modelling framework was used to design and implement a field-scale model for subsurface tile-drainage, surface runoff and pollutant transport calculation. Three separate modules were developed to simulate the soil water dynamics in both the saturated (SIDRA) and unsaturated (SIRUP) zones as well as the solute transport into drainage and runoff water (SILASOL). Each module was built using the LIQUID template library. The modules are interconnected within the framework, using a slot-and-signal communication system allowing SIDRA, SIRUP and SILASOL to interact and interplay synchronously. The resulting model was compared with a non-modular version of the same code working with a fixed time step and experimental field data as well. The agreement between the LIQUID-based model results and field observations is more accurate, mainly because climatic forcing dynamics are better taken into account. This shows that the application of the LIQUID concepts can easily lead to an operational tool for decision makers.

Abstract

L'outil de modélisation hydrologique POWER est en cours de développement, en partenariat entre le Cemagref, le LTHE et Hydrowide. L'objectif des travaux en cours est d'évaluer la pertinence de la représentation du système hydrologique dans POWER. Contexte : Les gestionnaires de ressources en eau à l'échelle d'un bassin versant disposent actuellement d'une solution de modélisation hydrologique dite globale et d'une solution de modélisation hydrologique dite distribuée ou spatialisée. Si la première est simple à mettre en oeuvre, elle fait abstraction des processus physiques qui se déroulent sur un bassin versant. Elle présente vite des limites en cas de modification du paysage (occupation du sol, climat etc.). Un re-calibrage du modèle est alors nécessaire et ces modélisations sont difficilement utilisables sur des bassins non jaugés. La seconde solution intègre l'hétérogénéité spatiale du paysage dans la modélisation. Toutefois, les outils disponibles posent également un certain nombre de difficultés à l'utilisation. Un trop grand nombre de paramètres est en effet souvent nécessaire à la mise en oeuvre de la solution. L'adéquation entre l'échelle de représentation des processus et les échelles où ces processus sont fonctionnelles est aussi une question majeure dans ces modèles. D'autres part, plusieurs combinaisons de paramètres peuvent produire le même résultat. Tous ces éléments induisent donc pas mal d'incertitudes sur les résultats de ces modèles spatialisées. Dans ce contexte, Reggiani et al (1998, 1999) ont proposé un cadre de représentation des systèmes hydrologiques qui essaie de limiter le nombre de paramètres tout en proposant une approche unifiée pour les différents processus. Ce sont ces approches qui ont sous-tendu le développement de l'outil de modélisation POWER. Concepts scientifiques de l'outil de modélisation POWER : Le cadre théorique de représentation des systèmes hydrologiques proposé par Reggiani et al (1998, 1999) repose sur deux principes essentiels : · Une discrétisation spatiale du bassin versant en sous bassins versant (REW), et la définition de cinq zones d'écoulement ou volumes de contrôle au sein des REW (Zone Non Saturée, Zone Saturée, Surface Non Saturée, et Rivière). La formulation des équations de conservation, moyennées à l'échelle des volumes de contrôle. Dans l'outil de modélisation POWER une formulation plus fine des zones d'écoulement au sein des REW est proposée, à travers l'intégration de deux niveaux supplémentaires de discrétisation : (1) Une discrétisation en REC (colonnes élémentaires de sol), pour la prise en compte de l'hétérogénéité spatiale dans les REW et (2) une discrétisation en CELL (cellules ou horizons) pour la prise en compte de l'hétérogénéité verticale au sein des colonnes élémentaires. Cette formulation conduit à une représentation du bassin versant en objets élémentaires qui interagissent entre eux par des échanges de flux. La problématique de modélisation hydrologique spatialisée est réduite à une recherche des termes d'échange entre zones d'écoulement et à une recherche d'équations de fermeture de bilan. L'implémentation informatique du fonctionnement des systèmes hydrologiques tel qu'il est décrit est réalisée sur une plate forme de modélisation intégrée LIQUID développée par Hydrowide. Description du fonctionnement des systèmes hydrologiques et implémentation sur la plate forme LIQUID. La plate forme de modélisation intégrée LIQUID : La plate forme de modélisation LIQUID est basée sur les principes de la programmation orientée objet. Elle est de ce fait adaptée à la représentation du système hydrologique suivant les concepts présentés ci-dessus. Elle offre également un certain nombre d'avantages pour la modélisation environnementale : · Elle permet une implémentation informatique du bassin versant tel que le conçoit l'hydrologue en raison de sa grande modularité. · Elle repose sur une structure souple permettant de modéliser divers processus à leurs échelles spatio-temporelles propres, et d'assembler différents modèles dans une même plate forme. Sa structure permet de faire une modélisation du paysage "sur mesure". · Elle utilise des principes de modélisation comportementale qui offrent la possibilité à chaque élément du paysage de réagir diversement à des sollicitations multiples. · Elle est dotée d'une fonctionnalité basée sur des interruptions temporelles (Scheduler) pour gérer différents processus à leurs propres échelles de temps sans avoir recours à des interpolations temporelles. · Elle met à la disposition des utilisateurs, un ensemble de bibliothèques utiles dans les applications de modèles environnementaux et physiques. Utilisation de la plate forme LIQUID pour le développement de POWER Cette plate-forme est actuellement utilisée pour la construction de l'outil de modélisation POWER. Précisément, on s'attache à une formulation plus fine des zones d'écoulement dans les REW, à la description du fonctionnement des échanges entres les volumes élémentaires et à l'implémentation sur la plate forme. Une application au bassin versant de la Saône est prévue pour évaluer cet outils de modélisation, à travers une analyse des sorties et des scénarios de changements d'occupation du sol et de modification climatique. Nous présenterons les concepts scientifiques sur lesquels repose l'outil POWER, une brève description de la plate forme de modélisation LIQUID. Une illustration de la construction d'un module pour représenter un système hydrologique et son fonctionnement dans la plate forme sera présentée.

Abstract

Dans le contexte de la modélisation de la pollution par les produits phytosanitaires en milieu rural, on présente un modèle local de devenir de solutés en parcelle artificiellement drainée, appelé SI#. Il simule la hauteur de nappe à l'interdrain, les débits drainé et ruisselé, ainsi que les concentrations en produits phytosanitaires dans les eaux de drainage et de ruissellement, pour des événements pluvieux correspondant à la saison de drainage intense dans le contexte pédo-climatique du Grand Ouest de la France. Le support pour son implémentation et application est la plate-forme de modélisation intégrée LIQUID®. SI# est testé par comparaison avec des données expérimentales issues du site Arvalis de La Jaillière (44), pour les produits Isoproturon et Diflufénicanil, aux échelles de l'événement pluvieux et de la saison de drainage intense. Les résultats montrent un bon comportement global de SI#, en termes de débits et de concentrations.

Abstract

International audience; In September 2002 a flash flood killed 23 human lives and generated 1.2 billion Euros of damages in less than 24 hours over an area of 20000 km² located in the Cévennes Vivarais region, in the south of France (Fig.1). The Gard river basin was hit by a storm that locally received more than 600 mm in one day (Huet et al., 2003; Delrieu et al., 2005). This storm triggered catastrophic flash floods on many upstream tributaries as well as the most important flood ever reported of the major rivers (Gard, Cèze and Vidourle). Post-event hydrological investigation using interviews of witnesses and river cross-sections surveys allowed estimation of specific peak discharges of 17 watersheds, the size of which ranged from 10 to 100 km2 (Gaume et al., 2003). The estimation gave specific peak discharges of at least 5 m3.s-1.km2 and up to 20 m3.s-1.km2 in the 600mm area. These figures are much higher than the 10 years return period discharge, which is about 2 m3.s-1.km2 for such catchment sizes in this region (Delrieu et al., 2005). Ruin et al. (2008) showed that half of the casualties occurred on very small ungauged watersheds of less than 20km2. There is therefore a need to improve the knowledge of runoff generation on such small catchments, and to do identify if some warning could be possible. This work presents a modeling study aiming at quantifying the interest of improved radar based rainfall fields in the prediction of two small catchments in the context of this flash flood event.

Abstract

[Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]ARCEAU; The aim of the AVuPUR project was to produce pieces of knowledge and simulation tools about the hydrology of periurban catchments. These catchments are particularly complex due to the juxtaposition of natural or cultivated areas, urban areas and various anthropogenic networks such as roads, sewer networks. For this reason, these catchments had been poorly studied before. In addition to fundamental understanding of the behaviour of those catchments, the project allowed the derivation of elements useful for decision makers. Two pilot catchments, belonging to long term research observatories, were considered within the AVuPUR project: the Yzeron catchment (150 km2), in the vicinity of Lyon, France, belonging to OTHU, and the Chézine catchment (34 km2), in the suburbs of Nantes, belonging to ONEVU. The first step was the description and understanding of the functioning of the catchments under study. For this purpose, we i) collected and analysed existing geographical (Geographical Information System, GIS) layers and hydrological data; ii) deployed in situ experiments to better understand the hydrological response, in particular in rural areas; iii) developed and compared various land use mapping methods, focusing on the determination of the impervious fraction and the distinction of various vegetation covers. In parallel, we developed and assessed various numerical models, simulating the hydrology of those catchments. At small scale, we proposed a new model, describing each object in the landscape. The aim is a better understanding of their functioning and the derivation of a hierarchy of the dominant objects/processes. For larger catchments, we tried to adapt existing models in order to take into account periurban catchments specificity. Model performance was assessed using indicators allowing the characterization of the impact of land use artificialisation on the water cycle, derived from data analysis. Those indicators are also relevant to quantify the vulnerability of the hydrology of those catchments to urbanization. Prospective meetings gathering the various actors on the Yzeron catchment were organised. They allowed the derivation of possible land use change scenarios in 2030. Those scenarios were introduced in hydrological models to quantify the impact on the hydrological regime and the riverbed erosion risk.; Le projet AVuPUR avait pour objectif de produire des connaissances et des outils de simulations sur l’hydrologie des bassins versants périurbains. Ces bassins constituent des milieux particulièrement intéressants, du fait de la juxtaposition de zones rurales naturelles ou agricoles, de zones urbaines artificialisées et de la multiplicité des réseaux. Ils avaient, de fait, été peu étudiés auparavant. Outre des connaissances fondamentales sur ces bassins, le projet a permis de dégager des éléments d’aide à la décision pour les gestionnaires de ces bassins. Le projet s’est appuyé sur deux bassins versants pilote, faisant partie d’observatoires de long terme : le bassin versant de l’Yzeron (150 km2), en périphérie de Lyon, appartenant à l’OTHU , et le bassin de la Chézine (34 km2) dans la banlieue de Nantes, qui fait partie de l’ONEVU. Nous avons d’abord cherché à décrire et comprendre les systèmes étudiés. Pour cela, nous avons i) collecté et analysé les données géographiques (couches de Systèmes d’Informations Géographiques, SIG) et hydrologiques existantes ; ii) mis en place des expérimentations dédiées pour mieux comprendre la réponse hydrologique des zones rurales ; iii) développé et comparé différentes méthodes de cartographie de l’occupation des sols avec une attention particulière à la quantification de l’imperméabilisation et des divers couverts végétaux. En parallèle, nous avons développé et évalué des outils de simulation du cycle hydrologique dans ces bassins. A fine échelle, des modèles originaux décrivant les différents objets du paysage ont été proposés afin de mieux comprendre le fonctionnement du système et hiérarchiser les objets/processus importants. Pour les bassins plus grands, nous avons cherché à adapter des modèles existants à la complexité des bassins périurbains. Les modèles ont été évalués à l’aide d’indicateurs caractérisant le régime hydrologique en milieu artificialisé, dérivés de l’analyse des données. Ces indicateurs permettent aussi de quantifier la vulnérabilité des bassins à l’urbanisation. Enfin, nous avons étudié les perspectives d’évolution du bassin de l’Yzeron à l’échéance 2030. Un atelier de prospective territoriale a permis de construire une vision, partagée par les acteurs, des évolutions possibles sur ce bassin. Les scenarii ainsi développés ont été introduits dans les modèles hydrologiques pour quantifier quel pourrait être l’impact sur l’hydrologie et le risque d’incision.
