A novel core-shell structured alginate-based hydrogel bead modified by co-gelatinizing with starch and protocatechuic acid (PA), was designed to modulate physical properties of beads, release behavior and antioxidant stability of encapsulated bioactives. Core was fabricated by ionotropic gelation, and its formulation (ratio of sodium alginate/starch) was determined by particle size/starch distribution, texture and bioactive encapsulation capacity of core. Then, coating core with shell-forming solution co-gelatinized with different doses of PA, and subsequently cross-linked with Ca 2+ to obtain core-shell structured beads. Surface microstructure, mechanical characteristics, and swelling ratio of beads were affected by concentrations of PA. Besides, core-shell structure containing PA could enhance delivery and sustained release of encapsulated phenolic bioactives during in vitro digestion, and improve their antioxidant potential stability. Furthermore, interaction between PA and polysaccharide components was elucidated by FTIR and TGA. Carvacrol (CA) is a phenolic monoterpene renowned for its diverse pharmacological benefits, particularly its cardioprotective effects. Concurrently, phenolic acids have also demonstrated promise in mitigating drug-induced cardiotoxicity. Focusing on combating doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity (DIC), the research aims to synthesize novel cardioprotective agents by combining CA with 3-hydroxybenzoic acid (3HA). Doxorubicin, an anticancer drug, poses cardiovascular risks as its adverse effect, prompting the exploration of hybrid compounds. Various linker molecules, including alkyl and acyl with different carbon lengths, were investigated to understand their impact on bioactivity. In vitro testing on the DOX-induced H9c2 cell death model revealed the effectiveness of a CA conjugate in preserving cardiomyocyte viability. In silico analysis highlighted favorable drug-like properties and low toxicity of the conjugate. A compact antioxidant interfacial layer was fabricated by combining phosphorylation treatment with protocatechuic acid (PA) copolymerization to enhance the physical and oxidative stability of high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) prepared using perilla protein isolate (PPI). The covalent binding between PPI and phosphate groups induced conformational changes, facilitating the interaction between PPI and PA. The formed phosphorylated PPI-PA conjugates (LPPI-PA) exhibited a reduced particle size of 196.75 nm, promoting their adsorption at the interface. HIPEs prepared by LPPI-PA conjugates showed higher storage stability due to decreased droplet size, increased interfacial protein adsorption content (90.48%), and the formation of an interconnected network within the system. Additionally, the combination of LPPI and PA anchored PA to the interface, significantly inhibiting lipid oxidation in HIPEs as evidenced by low levels of lipid hydroperoxide (30.33 μmol/g oil) and malondialdehyde (379.34 nmol/g oil). Owning to the hydrophobic characteristics of microporous organic networks (MONs), their utilizations still largely limited in non- and weak-polar analytes. To expend their applications, here we reported the synthesis of a novel hollowed H-MON-PEI 1800 -2 composite via sacrifice template method and subsequent modification with polyethyleneimine (PEI) for efficient solid phase extraction of polar and ionic phenolic acid (PAs) from fruit juice samples. H-MON-PEI 1800 -2 exhibits large surface area, rapid extraction kinetics, remarkable chemical and thermal stabilities, and provides synergistic electrostatic, π-π, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interaction sites for PAs. The developed method owns low limit of detection, wide linear range, large enrichment factors, and good reusability. The recoveries of H-MON-PEI 1800 -2 for PAs are 1-3 orders of magnitude higher than those of commercial adsorbents like activated carbon, C18 and Oasis HLB. Phenolic acids, essential compounds in whole grains, are renowned for their health-enhancing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Variations in concentration, particularly of hydroxybenzoic and hydroxycinnamic acids, are observed among grain types. Their antiobesity and antidiabetes effects are linked to their modulation of key signaling pathways like AMPK and PI3K, crucial for metabolic regulation and the body's response to inflammation and oxidative stress. Processing methods significantly influence phenolic acid content and bioavailability in whole grains. Thermal techniques like boiling, baking, or roasting can degrade these compounds, with loss influenced by processing conditions. Nonthermal methods such as germination, fermentation, or their combination, can protect or enhance phenolic acid content under ideal conditions. Novel nonthermal approaches like ultrahigh pressure (UHP), irradiation, and pulsed electric fields (PEF) show promise in preserving these compounds. Further research is needed to fully comprehend the impact mechanisms of these innovative methods on the nutritional and sensory attributes of cereals.

The metabolism research of bioactive phenolic acids  widely found in natural products is of great significance for elucidating pharmacologic mechanisms and screening lead compounds. However, it is time-consuming and vulnerable to interference to conduct the traditional metabolism approach by applying organisms or biomaterials. Herein, a bionic technology was established by combining online electrochemistry-mass spectrometry (EC-MS) with offline electrochemistry-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (EC-LC-MS) to investigate the oxidative transformation and metabolic processes of the active phenolic acids (including salvianolic acid A, caffeic acid, 3, 5-O-dicaffeoylquinic acid, ferulic acid, salvianic acid A, and protocatechuic acid). Phase I metabolism of the phenolic acids were simulated by applying a three-electrode controlled potential electrochemical reactor with a boron-doped diamond electrode, with glutathione mixed into the oxidative products simultaneously for obtaining the phase II metabolites. Finally, structural characterization of the simulated metabolites of the phenolic acids was achieved successfully, including hydroxylation, methylation, demethylation, decarboxylation, etc. It was revealed that the simulated metabolism process based on an electrochemical system was effective in yielding a wide variety of metabolites for these compounds, which was also compared with the metabolism results applying rat liver microsomes. The potentially wide application of Phenolic acids (PAs) in industries was severely limited by their inadequate solubility and stability in polar/non-polar media. To overcome these limits, studies on the enzymatic esterification of PAs with glycerol were carried out to reach a yield of 95% of phenolic acid glycerols (PAGs) under the following reaction conditions: 1:150 molar ratio of PAs to glycerol; 25% of Lipozyme 435 relative to the weight of total substrates; 80°C, 500 rpm, 86.7 kPa and 10 h. Three resulting PAGs including caffeoyl glycerol (CG), feruloyl glycerol (FG), and p-hydroxycinnamoyl glycerol (p-HCG) were confirmed by MS, 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR. Among them, CG showed a comparative free radical scavenging ability to CA, indicating its potential use as a water-soluble antioxidant alternative to CA for food and cosmetic applications.

Lactobacillus strains have emerged as promising probiotics for enhancing the bioactivities of plant-based foods associated with flavonoid biotransformation. Employing microbial fermentation and mass spectrometry, we explored flavonoid metabolism in lychee pulp fermented separately by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Limosilactobacillus fermentum. Two novel metabolites, 3,5,7-trihydroxychromone and catechol, were exclusively identified in L. plantarum-fermented pulp. Concomitant with consumption of catechin and quercetin glycosides, dihydroquercetin glycosides, 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid and p-hydroxyphenyllactic acid were synthesized by two strains through hydrogenation and fission of C-ring. Quantitative analysis revealed that bound phenolics were primarily located in water-insoluble polysaccharides in lychee pulp. Quercetin 3-O-rutinoside was partially liberated from water-insoluble polysaccharides and migrated to water-soluble polysaccharides during fermentation. Meanwhile, substantial accumulations in short-chain fatty acids (increased 1.45 to 3.08-fold) and viable strains (increased by 1.97 to 2.00 Log 10 CFU/mL) were observed in fermentative pulp. The gut microbiota metabolizes flavonoids, amino acids, dietary fiber, and other components of foods to produce a variety of gut microbiota-derived metabolites. Flavonoids are the largest group of polyphenols, and approximately 7000 flavonoids have been identified. A variety of phenolic acids are produced from flavonoids and amino acids through metabolic processes by the gut microbiota. Furthermore, these phenolic acids are easily absorbed. Phenolic acids generally represent phenolic compounds with one carboxylic acid group. Gut microbiota-derived phenolic acids have antiviral effects against several viruses, such as SARS-CoV-2 and influenza. Furthermore, phenolic acids influence the immune system by inhibiting the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor-α. In the nervous systems, phenolic acids may have protective effects against neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Moreover, phenolic acids can improve levels of blood glucose, cholesterols, and triglycerides. Phenolic acids also improve cardiovascular functions, such as blood pressure and atherosclerotic lesions. This review focuses on the current knowledge of the effects of phenolic acids produced from food-derived flavonoids and amino acids by the gut microbiota on health and disease.

The lipophilization of polyphenols (phenolipids) may increase their affinity for membranes, leading to better antioxidant protection. Cholesteryl esters of caffeic, dihydrocaffeic, homoprotocatechuic and protocatechuic acids were synthetized in a one-step procedure with good to excellent yields of ~50-95%. After evaluation of their radical scavenging capacity by the DPPH method and establishing the anodic peak potential by cyclic voltammetry, their antioxidant capacity against AAPH-induced oxidative stress in soybean PC liposomes was determined. Their interaction with the liposomal membrane was studied with the aid of three fluorescence probes located at different depths in the membrane. The cholesteryl esters showed a better or similar radical scavenging capacity to that of α-tocopherol and a lower anodic peak potential than the corresponding parental phenolic acids. Cholesteryl esters were able to protect liposomes to a similar or greater extent than α-tocopherol. However, despite their antiradical capacity and being able to penetrate and orientate in the membrane in a parallel position to phospholipids, the antioxidant efficiency of cholesteryl esters was deeply dependent on the phenolipid polyphenolic moiety structure. When incorporated during liposome preparation, cholesteryl protocatechuate and caffeate showed more than double the activity of α-tocopherol. Thus, cholesteryl phenolipids may protect biomembranes against oxidative stress to a greater extent than α-tocopherol.

Fungi are very common infectious pathogens, which may cause invasive and potentially life-threatening infections. However, the efficacy of antifungal medications remains limited. Herein, a Cu 2+ -phenolic nanoflower is designed to combat fungal infections by combining cuproptosis and cell wall digestion. Firstly, protocatechuic acid (PA)-Cu 2+ (PC) nanopetals are prepared by coordination interaction. Lywallzyme (Lyw) is then added to induce the self-assembly of PC to form Lyw loaded PC (PCW) nanoflowers. PCW nanoflowers can effectively adhere to fungal surface and Lyw can digest fungal cell walls to facilitate Cu 2+ to penetrate into fungal interior, thereby exerting a synergistic fungicidal effect. PCW nanoflowers exhibit excellent fungicidal activity even in protein-rich and high-salt conditions, where dissociative Cu 2+ completely loses fungicidal activity. Transcriptome sequencing analysis reveals that PCW can lead to fungal cuproptosis. To date, no study has focused on Uvaria macrophylla leaves with various traditional efficiencies. This paper therefore applied a database affinity ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with quadrupole Orbitrap tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap-MS/MS) strategy to analyze the lyophilized aqueous extract of U. macrophylla leaves. Through database comparison and MS fragment elucidation, this study has putatively identified 41 constituents belonging to flavonoid, phenolic acid, steroid, and saccharide natural product classifications. Significantly, four groups of isomers (liquiritigenin vs. isoliquiritigenin vs. pinocembrin; oroxylin A vs. wogonin vs. galangin 3-methyl ether; isoquercitrin vs. hyperoside; protocatechuic acid vs. 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid) have been successfully distinguished from each other. All of 41 constituents were then subjected to a quantitative analysis based on linear regression equation established by the above UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap-MS/MS strategy and an ABTS +• -scavenging antioxidant assay. Finally, the chemical content was multiplied by the corresponding ABTS +• -scavenging percentage to calculate the antioxidant contribution. It was shown that the chemical contents of 41 constituents varied from 0.003 ± 0.000 to 14.418 ± 1.041 mg/g, and gallic acid showed the highest antioxidant contribution. Gallic acid is considered as a suitable antioxidant quality-marker (Q-marker) of U. macrophylla leaves. These findings have scientific implications for the resource development and quality control of U. macrophylla leaves.

Glucose and lipid metabolism disorders are the core pathological mechanism of a variety of metabolic diseases, and the incidence of related diseases is increasing year by year, which seriously threatens human life and health. Traditional Chinese medicine with medicinal and edible properties refers to Chinese medicinal resources that have both medicinal and edible characteristics. Due to its safety and its health-promoting and medicinal functions, traditional Chinese medicine has received increasing attention in the development of functional health foods. Phenolic acids are important secondary metabolites that are ubiquitous in medicinal and edible homologous plants, and the regulation of glycolipid metabolism is an important activity and plays a key role in many diseases. In this paper, we focus on the alleviation of glycolipid disorders using MEHH phenolic acids, which regulate glucose metabolism and lipid metabolism, improve insulin resistance, inhibit inflammatory responses, alleviate oxidative stress, and regulate intestinal flora; additionally, we summarize the mechanism in order to provide a reference for MEHH phenolic acids in the treatment of glycolipid metabolism diseases.

Bladder cancer (BC) is the 10th most common tumour with a high incidence and recurrence rate worldwide; however, the current therapies present limitations as, regularly, not all patients benefit from treatment. Therefore, the search for new, active marine phenolic acids with anti-tumour properties is imperative. In this study, we subjected marine phenolic acids to in silico investigations such as network pharmacology, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics simulation (MD) to identify a plausible pathway and the lead compound that inhibits BC. According to the network pharmacology analysis, eight hub genes (PLAU, MMP2, ITGB3, MAPK1, PTPN11, ESR1, TLR4, MMP9) were found and linked to the enrichment of hsa05205: proteoglycans in cancer, and four hub genes (MMP1, MMP2, MAPK1, MMP9) were involved in the enrichment of hsa05219: BC. Subsequently, molecular docking studies showed that the marine phenolic acids exhibit a strong binding affinity for the target protein, matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MPP9). Among these 14 marine phenolic acids, chicoric acid showed the highest binding affinity of -67.1445 kcal/mol and formed hydrogen bonds with the residues of Ala189, Gln227, Leu188, His226, Ala242, Arg249, Ala191, and Gly186 in the active site of the MPP9 protein. Then, molecular dynamics simulation revealed that chicoric acid formed a stable protein-ligand complex with RMSD and RMSF values of 0.72 nm and 0.53 nm, respectively. Furthermore, the PCA method was employed to understand the dynamical behaviour in the conformational space of MPP9 protein bound to chicoric acid, and the results showed the good conformational space behaviour of MPP9 protein. Moreover, chicoric acid showed a free binding energy value of -32.62 kcal/mol, which indicated it could be a BC inhibitor. Various Vinca species have been traditionally used for their antihypertensive, sedative, and hemostatic properties, as well as for treating diabetes. In this study, some flavonoids, phenolic acids and iridoids were isolated from an endemic Vinca species, Vinca soneri for the first time. α-Glucosidase inhibitory effects of the isolates were tested and kaempferol-3-O-α-rhamnopyranosyl (1→6) β-galactopyranoside (1) was found to be the most active one with an IC 50 value of 285.73 ±7.35 μM. Enzyme kinetic assay revealed that it inhibited α-glucosidase in competitive manner. Molecular geometry of 1 was predicted and Frontier molecular orbital analysis was performed using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Molecular docking and MM-GBSA calculations predicted good fit for 1 in the enzyme active site and key interactions with the catalytic residues. In this study, the active food packaging film were prepared using hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan with different substitution sites (O-HACC & N-HACC) and dialdehyde chitosan (DCS) grafted with protocatechuic acid (PA). To explore the effect of chitosan quaternization positions and crosslinking approaches on the slow-release and antibacterial properties, the double-crosslinked film were fabricated through the self-coupling reaction of PA and Schiff base reaction between amino groups on HACC and aldehyde groups on DCS. The HACC/DCS-based film exhibited stable porous three-dimensional networks with high nisin loading ratios (>90 %). With the participation of the catechol-catechol structure, the dense double-crosslinked film effectively restricted the diffusion of the water molecules, resulting in excellent slow-release properties fitting with the Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetic model. Especially, O-HACC/PA-g-DCS film, which had more reaction sites for Schiff base crosslinking than N-HACC, exhibited the equilibrium swelling ratio of 800 % at 60 h and could sustainably release nisin via non-Fickian diffusion behavior until 48 h. Moreover, the HACC/DCS-based double-crosslinked film performed good long-time antibacterial activity and preservation effects on salmon. A magnetic MXene aerogel (Fe 3 O 4 @MXene@PEI) was prepared by crosslinking amino modified MXene with polyethyleneimine using epichlorohydrin as a cross-linker. Adsorption properties of Fe 3 O 4 @MXene@PEI aerogel for phenolic acids were evaluated by adsorption kinetics and isotherms experiments, showing that the high adsorption affinity was governed by multilayer chemisorption process. An efficient MSPE/HPLC method was developed for the determination of phenolic acids with excellent selectivity, good linearity (0.025-5.0 μg mL -1 ), low LODs (0.007-0.017 μg mL -1 ), and satisfactory recoveries (80.0-120.0 %). Moreover, the antioxidant activity of the Fe 3 O 4 @MXene@PEI purified compounds was superior to that of the conventional method as demonstrated by the results of scavenging experiments on 2,2 -diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging assay. Finally, 65 organic acids were identified in the Fe 3 O 4 @MXene@PEI treated honeysuckle extracts by UHPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap MS/MS analysis. This study proposes liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) for the recovery of phenolic acids from winery wastewater replacing common volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with environmentally friendly solvents. On one hand, terpenes (α-pinene and p-cymene) and terpenoids (eucalyptol and linalool) were selected as green solvents and compared to common VOCs (ethyl acetate or 1-butanol). On the other hand, gallic acid (GA), vanillic acid (VA), syringic acid (SA) and caffeic acid (CA) were selected as phenolic acids to be recovered. The extraction performance was evaluated under different operation conditions: solvent-to-feed ratio, initial concentration of phenolic acids and temperature. This work also evaluated the back-extraction whole process global recovery and solvent regeneration, by means of aqueous NaOH solution. Eucalyptol has shown the highest overall global extraction performance (21.07 % for GA, 93.21 % for VA, 78.79 % for SA, and 80.57 % for CA) and lower water solubility compared to the best performing VOC solvent (1-butanol). Therefore, eucalyptol can be a potential eco-friendly solvent to replace VOCs for sustainable phenolic acid recovery from winery wastewater. Natural polyphenolic compound rosmarinic acid (RA) has good antitumor activity. However, the distinctive tumor microenvironment, characterized by low pH and elevated levels of glutathione (GSH), enhances the tolerance of tumors to the singular anti-tumor treatment mode using RA, resulting in unsatisfactory therapeutic efficacy. Targeting nonapoptotic programmed cell death processes may provide another impetus to inhibit tumor growth. RA possesses the capability to coordinate with metal elements. To solve the effect restriction of the above single treatment mode, it is proposed to construct a self-assembled nanocomposite, Fe-RA. Under tumor microenvironment, Fe-RA nanocomposite exerts the characteristics of POD-like enzyme activity and depletion of GSH, producing a large amount of hydroxyl radical (·OH) while disrupting the antioxidant defense system of tumor cells. Moreover, due to the enhanced permeability and retention effect (EPR), Fe-RA can transport Fe 2+ to a greater extent to tumor cells and increase intracellular iron content. Causing an imbalance in iron metabolism in tumor cells and promoting cell ferroptosis. The results of the synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) prove the successful complexation of Fe-RA nanocomposite. In this study, vortex-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction (VA-LLME) based on hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDES) was used to efficiently and sustainably extract five phenolic acids and tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) from Shanxi aged vinegar (SAV). The VA-LLME technique was employed to investigate the extraction mechanism of HDES with the best extraction performance for the target compounds using a conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS). An artificial neural network combined with a genetic algorithm (ANN-GA) was developed to optimize the extraction conditions based on single-factor and response surface methodology, while also analyzing the interactive effects on the phenolic acids and TMP in the extracted solution during the extraction phase. The effects of phenolic acid grafted-chitosan hydrocolloids (CS-g-GA/FA) on aldehyde contents from lipid oxidation in golden pompano fillets during pan-frying was investigated with an established high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrum method. Results indicated that pan-frying induced profound lipid oxidation and aldehydes generation with propanal, hexanal, nonanal, trans, trans-2,4-decadienal, and 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal as the abundant species. CS-g-FA and CS-g-GA effectively decreased their contents by 23.74-27.42 %, 61.69-67.42 %, 41.83-53.91 %, 29.91-48.79 %, and 61.57-65.39 % after 3 min. Most aldehyde contents decreased with the extension of pan-frying time due to the volatilization and reaction. In terms of substrate depletion, CS-g-phenolic acids effectively inhibited unsaturated fatty acids oxidation due to their decent antioxidant activity than CS. The significant lower retention rates of aldehydes in the CS-g-phenolic acids groups compared with control in chemical mode confirmed the carbonyl ammonia condensation. The structural, functional, and prebiotic properties of three maize-derived cell wall dietary fiber-phenolic acid complexes (CWDFPC1, CWDFPC2, and CWDFPC3) were investigated. The results showed that all three CWDFPCs had similar proximate composition and XRD pattern (type I). However, there were significant differences in the phytochemical profiles of their phenolic compounds (PC). Although the testa was the primary source of bound PC (BPC) in all three CWDFPCs, CWDFPC2 had the highest BPC content (15.41 mg GAE/g) and exhibited the greatest antioxidant activity in vitro (DPPH and ABTS assays). The water holding capacity of CWDFPC1 (6.53 g/g) and CWDFPC3 (6.86 g/g) was higher than CWDFPC2 (4.84 g/g), and three CWDFPCs had similar nitrite ion adsorption capacity, bile adsorption capacity, and cation-exchange capacity. Different aminated starch (AS) [EEAS (introducing ethylenediamine into starch using cross-linking-etherification-amination method (CEA)), EPAS (introducing o-phenylenediamine using CEA), OEAS (introducing ethylenediamine using cross-linking-oxidation-amination method (COA)), and OPAS (introducing o-phenylenediamine using COA)] were synthesized. The AS-phenolic acids [gallic acid (GA), syringic acid (SA), and vanillic acid (VA)] conjugates were prepared by laccase-catalyzed reaction. The grafting efficiency of EEAS on GA, SA, and VA was 36.59%, 69.71%, and 68.85%, respectively. SA reduced the maximum depolymerization rate of EEAS. The relative crystallinity of EEAS and EPAS grafted phenolic acid increased, and their particles showed severe breakage in appearance. OEAS-phenolic acid conjugates lost its granular structure and behaved as flakes and lumps, while the surface of OPAS-phenolic acid conjugates remained smooth after grafting phenolic acid. GA increased the DPPH· scavenging efficiency of EEAS from 16.12% to 79.92%. The study evaluates the interaction between Calocybe indica mushroom polyphenols (phenolic acid) and kidney bean protein (KBPM), aiming to enhance vegan food quality. The mushrooms exhibited a carbohydrate content of 3.65%, an antioxidant activity of 55.04 ± 0.17%, and a phenolic content of 4.86 mg GAE/g. Caffeic and cinnamic acids were identified through high-pressure liquid chromatography. Various concentrations of KBPM were tested at phenolic acid concentrations of 0.025, 0.050, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, and 1%, among these, KBPM 0.2 demonstrated the highest binding efficiency of 99.40 ± 0.05%. Notably, this complex improved the protein's functional properties, such as solubility by 11.43%, water and oil holding capacities by 10.62% and 22.04%, and emulsion capacity and stability by 3.69% and 5.83%, respectively, compared to the native protein. The protein-phenolic acid complex also enhanced thermal stability, surface charge, amino acid content, and reduced particle size compared to native protein. Although nanozymes sensor arrays have the potential to recognize multiple target substances simultaneously, they currently rarely identify phenolic acids in food due to limited catalytic performance and complex preparation conditions of nanozymes. Here, inspired by the structure of polyphenol oxidase, we have successfully prepared a novel gallic acid-Cu (GA-Cu) nanozyme with laccase-like activity. Due to the different catalytic efficiency of GA-Cu nanozymes towards six common phenolic acids, a three-channel colorimetric sensor array was constructed using reaction kinetics as the sensing unit to achieve high-throughput detection and identification of six phenolic acids within a concentration range from 1 to 100 μM. This method avoids the creation of numerous sensing units. Notably, the successful discrimination of six phenolic acids in samples of juice, beer, and wine has been achieved by the sensor array. Background: Researchers have investigated different techniques for synthesis of carbon dots. These techniques include Arc discharge, laser ablation, oxidation, water/solvothermal, and chemical vapor deposition. However, these techniques suffer from some limitations like the utilization of gaseous charged particles, high current, high temperature, potent oxidizing agents, non-environmentally friendly carbon sources, and the generation of uneven particle size. Therefore, there was a significant demand for the adoption of a new technology that combines the environmentally friendly aspects of both bio-based carbon sourcing and synthesis technique., Results: Medicago sativa L (alfalfa)-derived N, S-CDs have been successfully synthesized via microwave irradiation. The N,S-CDs exhibit strong fluorescence (λ ex/em of 320/420 nm) with fluorescence quantum yield of 2.2 % and high-water solubility. The produced N,S-CDs were characterized using TEM, EDX, Zeta potential analysis, IR, UV-Visible, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The average diameter of the produced N, S-CDs was 4.01 ± 1.2 nm, and the Zeta potential was -24.5 ± 6.63 mv. The stability of the produced nano sensors was also confirmed over wide pH range, long time, and in presence of different ions. The synthesized N, S-CDs were employed to quantify the antibacterial drug, nifuroxazide (NFZ), by fluorescence quenching via inner filter effect mechanism. The method was linear with NFZ concentration ranging from 1.0 to 30.0 μM. LOD and LOQ were 0.16 and 0.49 μM, respectively. The method was applied to quantify NFZ in simulated gastric juice (SGJ) with % recovery 99.59 ± 1.4 in addition to pharmaceutical dosage forms with % recovery 98.75 ± 0.61 for Antinal Capsules® and 100.63 ± 1.54 for Antinal suspension®. Artichokes ( Cynara scolymus L.) are valuable foods, thanks to their health benefits, but they generate significant waste during their production, harvesting, and processing, which poses sustainability issues. This study applied an agroprospecting approach to convert Tema artichoke biowaste (TB) into valuable resources, starting from a global perspective of the production chain to the targeted applications based on chemical and biological analysis. The major TB was identified in the outer bracts of the immature flower heads, which were collected throughout the harvesting season, extracted, and analyzed. The most abundant compounds were phenolic acids including chlorogenic acid and caffeoylquinic derivatives. Among flavonoids, cynaroside was the most abundant compound. Multivariate analysis distinguished batches by collection period, explaining 77.7% of the variance, with most compounds increasing in concentration later in the harvest season. Subsequently, TB extracts were analyzed for their potential in wound healing and anti-aging properties. Fibroblasts were used to assess the effect of selected extracts on cell migration through a scratch wound assay and on cellular senescence induced by etoposide. The results show a significant decrease in senescence-associated β-galactosidase activity, γH2AX nuclear accumulation, and both p53 and p21 protein levels. Overall, this study ascribes relevant anti-skin aging effects to TB, thus increasing its industrial value in cosmeceutical and nutraceutical applications.

The practical application of the Fe-catalyzed peracetic acid (PAA) processes is seriously restricted due to the need for narrow pH working range and poor anti-interference capacity. This study demonstrates that protocatechuic acid (PCA), a natural and eco-environmental phenolic acid, significantly enhanced the removal of sulfonamide antibiotics in Fe(III)/PAA process under actually neutral pH conditions (6.0-8.0) by complexing Fe(III). With sulfamethoxazole (SMX) as the model contaminant, the pseudo-first-order rate constant of SMX elimination in PCA/Fe(III)/PAA process was 63.5 times higher than that in Fe(III)/PAA process at pH 7.0, surpassing most of the previously reported strategies-enhanced Fe-catalyzed PAA processes (i.e., picolinic acid and hydroxylamine etc.). Excluding the primary contribution of reactive species commonly found in Fe-catalyzed PAA processes (e.g., • OH, R-O • , Fe(IV)/Fe(V) and 1 O 2 ) to SMX removal, the Fe(III)-peroxy complex intermediate (CH 3 C(O)OO-Fe(III)-PCA) was proposed as the primary reactive species in PCA/Fe(III)/PAA process. DFT theoretical calculations indicate that CH 3 C(O)OO-Fe(III)-PCA exhibited stronger oxidation potential than CH 3 C(O)OO-Fe(III), thereby enhancing SMX removal. Four potential removal pathways of SMX were proposed and the toxicity of reaction solution decreased with the removal of SMX. Furthermore, PCA/Fe(III)/PAA process exhibited strong anti-interference capacity to common natural anions (HCO 3 - , Cl - and NO 3 - ) and humic acid. More importantly, the PCA/Fe(III)/PAA process demonstrated high efficiency for SMX elimination in actual samples, even at a trace Fe(III) dosage (i.e., 5 μM). The physicochemical properties of starch and phenolic acid (PA) complexes largely depend on the effect of non-covalent interactions on the microstructure of starch. However, whether there are differences and commonalities in the interactions between various types of PAs and starch remains unclear. The physicochemical properties and digestive characteristics of the complexes were investigated by pre-gelatinization of 16 structurally different PAs and pullulanase-modified rice starches screened. FT-IR and XRD results revealed that PA complexed with debranched rice starch (DRS) through hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction. Benzoic/phenylacetic acid with polyhydroxy groups could enter the helical cavities of the starch chains to promote the formation of V-shaped crystals, and cinnamic acid with p-hydroxyl structure acted between starch chains in a bridging manner, both of which increased the relative crystallinity of DRS, with DRS-ellagic acid increasing to 20.03 %. The digestion and hydrolysis results indicated that the acidification and methoxylation of PA synergistically decreased the enzyme activity leading to a decrease in the digestibility of the complexes, and the resistant starch content of the DRS-vanillic acid complexes increased from 28.27 % to 71.67 %. A new salvianolic acid derivative, (7' E )-(7 S , 8 S )-salvianolic acid V ( 1 ), together with four previously described compounds ( 2 - 5 ) were obtained from the n -butanol fraction of Salvia miltiorrhiza flowers. Their structures were established by a series of spectroscopic methods, and the absolute configuration of 1 was determined by electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculation. Salvianolic acids ( 1 ) and phenolic acids ( 2 - 4 ) showed stronger DPPH free radical scavenging abilities and certain protective effects against H 2 O 2 -induced human skin fibroblast (HSF) cells oxidative damage, in which compound 1 (IC 50 7.12  μ M) possessed more noticeable free radical scavenging activity than the positive control vitamin C (IC 50 14.98  μ M).

Multifunctional hydrogel adhesives are highly desirable in wound healing applications, yet their preparation often requires complex material system design to achieve. Herein, a straightforward one-pot two-step polymerization method is developed to prepare adhesive hydrogels for wound dressing based on protocatechuic acid (PCA), polyacrylic acid (PAA), and polyamidoamine-epichlorohydrin (PAE), where PCA provides the catechol groups for strong adhesion, PAA serves as the primary polymer matrix, and PAE acts as a bridge connecting PCA and PAA. This design results in a PAA-PAE-PCA hydrogel having a remarkable instant 90-degree peeling interfacial toughness of 431 J m -2 on porcine skin, which is further amplified to 615 J m -2 after 30 minutes. The hydrogel also possesses the desired features for wound dressing, such as self-healing, antioxidant, anti-UV and antibacterial properties, good cytocompatibility, strong adhesion in use and weak adhesion on removal, as well as reversible and wet adhesion. Finally, in vivo data reveal that the PAA-PAE-PCA hydrogels can significantly accelerate wound healing, as evidenced by a noticeable reduction in the wound area and a diminished inflammatory response. Collectively, these results endorse the obtained multifunctional hydrogel as a promising candidate for wound healing and related fields.

Cornelian cherry fruits contain a wide range of phenolic acids, flavonoids, and other secondary metabolites. Selected flavonoids may inhibit the perceiving of bitterness, however, the full mechanism with all TAS2R bitter taste receptors is not known. The aim of the study was to determine the inhibitory effect of Cornus mas phenolics against the bitterness receptors TAS2R13 and TAS2R3 through functional in vitro assays and coupling studies. The overall effect was validated by analysing the inhibition of the receptors activity in cells treated with tested cornelian cherry extracts. The strength of interaction with both TAS2R receptors varied between studied compounds with different binding affinity. Most compounds bonded with the TAS2R3 receptor through a long-distant hydrophobic interaction with Trp89A and π-π orbital overlapping-between phenolic and tryptophane aromatic rings. For TAS2R13 observed were various mechanisms of interaction with the compounds. This study established an ultra-performance liquid chromatography(UPLC) fingerprint of abandoned stems and leaves of Artemisia selengensis and quantitative analysis of multi-components by single marker(QAMS) for five phenolic acid components. Waters Acquity UPLC BEH C_(18) chromatography column(2.1 mm×100 mm, 1.7 μm) was used. The gradient elution was carried out with the mobile phase composed of 0.1% phosphoric acid water and acetonitrile at a flow rate of 0.3 mL·min~(-1) and a column temperature at 30 ℃. The detection wavelength was 330 nm, and the injection volume was 2 μL. Similarity evaluation and cluster analysis were conducted on the fingerprint data, and 15 common components in 13 batches of abandoned stems and leaves of A. selengensis were identified. The relative correction factors of ferulic acid, isochlorogenic acid A, isochlorogenic acid B, and isochlorogenic acid C were calculated using chlorogenic acid as the internal reference. The QAMS for determining five components in the abandoned stems and leaves of A. selengensis was established. At the same time, the content of these five components was determined using the external standard method(ESM), and the results showed that there were no significant differences in their content determined by the QAMS and the ESM. The results indicated that the content of phenolic acid components in the abandoned stems and leaves of A. selengensis from different varieties and different origins had obvious differences. In addition, the content of phenolic acid components in the abandoned stems and leaves of lignified A. selengensis was significantly higher than that of non-lignified A. selengensis. In summary, QAMS established in this study can be quickly, accurately, and economically used to determine the content of five phenolic acid components in abandoned stems and leaves of A. selengensis, laying a foundation for the resource development and utilization of abandoned stems and leaves of A. selengensis.

Noncovalent interactions of 4 selected phenolic acids, including gallic acid (GA), caffeic acid (CA), chlorogenic acid (CGA), and rosmarinic acid (RA) with lactoferrin (LF) were investigated. Compound combined with LF in the binding constant of CA > GA > RA > CGA, driven by van der Waals and hydrogen bonding for GA, and hydrophobic forces for others. Conformation of LF was affected at secondary and ternary structure levels. Molecular docking indicated that GA and CA located in the same site near the iron of the C-lobe, whereas RA and CGA bound to the C2 and N-lobe, respectively. Significantly enhanced antioxidant activity of complexes was found compared with pure LF, as demonstrated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azinobis(2-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) models. The molecular and colloidal-level interactions between two major phenolic acids, gallic and caffeic acid, with a major food polysaccharide, xanthan gum, were studied in binary systems aiming to correlate the stability of the binary systems as a function of pH and xanthan-polyphenol concentrations. Global stability diagrams were built, acting as roadmaps for examining the phase separation regimes followed by the fluorimetry-based thermodynamics of the interactions. The effects of noncovalent interactions on the macroscopic behavior of the binary systems were studied, using shear and extensional rheometry. The collected data for caffeic acid - xanthan gum mixtures showed that the main interactions were pH-independent volume exclusions, while gallic acid interacts with xanthan gum, especially at pH 7 with other mechanisms as well, improving the colloidal dispersion stability. A combination of fluorimetry, extensional rheology and stability measurements highlight the effect of gallic acid-induced aggregation of xanthan gum, both in structuring and de-structuring the binary systems. Pigmented rice varieties are abundant in phenolic compounds. Antioxidant activity and bioaccessibility of phenolic compounds are modified in the gastrointestinal tract. After in vitro simulated digestion, changes in antioxidant activity and bioaccessibility of phenolic compounds (phenolic acids, flavonoids, and anthocyanins) in purple rice brans (Hom Nil and Riceberry) were compared with undigested crude extracts. The digestion method was conducted following the INFOGEST protocol. Antioxidant activity was determined using the ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity assays. The bioaccessibility index (BI) was calculated from the ratio of digested to undigested soluble phenolic content. Overall results showed that the in vitro simulated digested rice brans had lower antioxidant activity and lower total phenolic, flavonoid, and anthocyanin contents. However, the concentration of sinapic acid was stable, while other phenolic acids (gallic, protocatechuic, vanillic, ρ -coumaric, and ferulic acids) degraded after the oral, gastric, and intestinal phases. The BI of sinapic, gallic, vanillic, and ferulic acids remained stable, and the BI of quercetin was resistant to digestion. Conversely, anthocyanins degraded during the intestinal phase. In conclusion, selective phenolic compounds are lost along the gastrointestinal tract, suggesting that controlled food delivery is of further interest.

Inflammation has been shown to trigger a wide range of chronic diseases, particularly inflammatory diseases. As a result, the focus of research has been on anti-inflammatory drugs and foods. In recent years, the field of medicinal and edible homology (MEH) has developed rapidly in both medical and food sciences, with 95% of MEH being associated with plants. Phenolic acids are a crucial group of natural bioactive substances found in medicinal and edible homologous plants (MEHPs). Their anti-inflammatory activity is significant as they play a vital role in treating several inflammatory diseases. These compounds possess enormous potential for developing anti-inflammatory drugs and functional foods. However, their development is far from satisfactory due to their diverse structure and intricate anti-inflammatory mechanisms. In this review, we summarize the various types, structures, and distribution of MEHP phenolic acids that have been identified as of 2023. We also analyze their anti-inflammatory activity and molecular mechanisms in inflammatory diseases through NF-κB, MAPK, NLRP3, Nrf2, TLRs, and IL-17 pathways. Additionally, we investigate their impact on regulating the composition of the gut microbiota and immune responses. Phenolic acids still gain significant attention due to their potential antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties. In this study, we have investigated the antimicrobial of six phenolic acids, namely chlorogenic, caffeic, p-coumaric, rosmarinic, gallic and tannic acids in the concentration range 0.5-500 μM, against Escherichia coli and Lactobacillus rhamnosus. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide colorimetric assay. Additionally, the cytotoxic effects of these phenolic acids on two cancer cell lines, the colorectal adenocarcinoma Caco-2 cell line and Dukes' type C colorectal adenocarcinoma DLD-1 cell line was examined. To further understand the molecular properties of these phenolic acids, quantum chemical calculations were performed using the Gaussian 09W program. Parameters such as ionization potential, electron affinity, electronegativity, chemical hardness, chemical softness, dipole moment, and electrophilicity index were obtained. The lipophilicity properties represented by logP parameter was also discussed. This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of the antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity of six phenolic acids, compounds deliberately selected due to their chemical structure. They are derivatives of benzoic or cinnamic acids with the increasing number of hydroxyl groups in the aromatic ring. Lignocellulosic biomass is a highly sustainable and largely carbon dioxide neutral feedstock for the production of biofuels and advanced biomaterials. Although thermochemical pretreatment is typically used to increase the efficiency of cell wall deconstruction, genetic engineering of the major plant cell wall polymers, especially lignin, has shown promise as an alternative approach to reduce biomass recalcitrance. Poplar trees with reduced lignin content and altered composition were previously developed by overexpressing bacterial 3-dehydroshikimate dehydratase (QsuB) enzyme to divert carbon flux from the shikimate pathway. In this work, three transgenic poplar lines with increasing QsuB expression levels and different lignin contents were studied using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). SANS showed that although the cellulose microfibril cross-sectional dimension remained unchanged, the ordered organization of the microfibrils progressively decreased with increased QsuB expression. This was correlated with decreasing total lignin content in the QsuB lines. WAXS showed that the crystallite dimensions of cellulose microfibrils transverse to the growth direction were not affected by the QsuB expression, but the crystallite dimensions parallel to the growth direction were decreased by ∼20%. Cellulose crystallinity was also decreased with increased QsuB expression, which could be related to high levels of 3,4-dihydroxybenzoate, the product of QsuB expression, disrupting microfibril crystallization. In addition, the cellulose microfibril orientation angle showed a bimodal distribution at higher QsuB expression levels. Overall, this study provides new structural insights into the impact of ectopic synthesis of small-molecule metabolites on cellulose organization and structure that can be used for future efforts aimed at reducing biomass recalcitrance.

The chemical constituents from Leucas ciliata belonging to Leucas genus in Lamiaceae were systematically explored by silica gel column chromatography, ODS column chromatography, Sephadex LH-20 gel column chromatography, and preparative high performance liquid chromatography, and seventeen phenolic acids were isolated. The chemical structures of the compounds were identified by their physicochemical properties, spectroscopic data, and literature. They were 4-hydroxyphenethyl ethyl succinate(1), 4-hydroxyphenethyl methyl succinate(2), 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl) ethyl acetate(3), p-hydroxyphenylethyl anisate(4), cassia cis-trans diphenylpropanoid(5), p-coumaric acid(6), 3,4-dihydroxybenzenepropionic acid methyl ester(7), caffeic acid(8), trans-p-hydroxyl ethyl cinnamate(9), methyl p-hydroxybenzeneacetate(10), 4-hydroxyphenethyl alcohol(11), syringic acid(12), vanillin(13), protocatechuic acid(14), salicylic acid(15), p-hydroxybenzaldehyde(16), and diorcinol(17). Among them, compound 1 was new, and compounds 2-10, 12, 14, and 16-17 were isolated from the plants belonging to Leucas genus for the first time. All compounds were obtained from L. ciliata for the first time. The anti-inflammatory activity of compounds 1-17 on NO production in lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-induced mouse leukemia cells of monocyte macrophage(RAW264. 7) cells was evaluated. The results showed that compounds 5, 7, and 9 exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity, with IC50values of(10. 14±0. 36)-(21. 17±0. 11) μmol·L~(-1).

Farfarae Flos is a traditional herb widely employed for treating coughs, bronchitis, and asthmatic disorders. In the current study, we utilized SWATH and IDA data acquisition modes in combination with multiple data processing techniques to identify Farfarae Flos metabolites in mice serum. A total of 56 compounds were characterized, including 31 phenolic acids, 13 flavonoids, 11 sesquiterpenoids and 1 alkaloid. Further quantitative analysis was conducted on 12 absorbed metabolites, utilizing a newly developed and rigorously validated analytical method. Our approach demonstrated an acceptable level of specificity, accuracy, precision, and stability. When applied to compare the serum of mice treated with FF, all 12 metabolites showed the highest concentration at 0.5 h. Rice straw lignin was extracted via alkaline hydrolysis and structurally characterized using FT-IR and 1 H NMR spectra. Ethyl acetate extract of acid solubilized lignin was found to contain p -coumaric acid, ferulic acid and caffeic acid as major phenolic acids which were isolated and characterized using spectral data. Amides of isolated phenolic acids were synthesized by their reaction with propyl and butyl amines using microwave irradiation and analysed using spectral studies. Phenolic acids and amides were evaluated for their effect on pollen germination and tube growth in pumpkin. Pollen tube length was significantly increased with N-butyl-3-(3, 4-dihydroxyphenyl) acrylamide and N -butyl-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl) acrylamide at 5 ppm concentration than the control. These results could be utilised in increasing pollen tube length of Cucurbita pepo while making interspecific cross between C. moschata and C. pepo in order to transfer hull-less character of C. pepo to virus resistant C. moschata genotypes.

ATP citrate lyase (ACLY) is a key enzyme in glucolipid metabolism, and abnormally high expression of ACLY occurs in many diseases, including cancers, dyslipidemia and cardiovascular diseases. ACLY inhibitors are prospective treatments for these diseases. However, the scaffolds of ACLY inhibitors are insufficient with weak activity. The discovery of inhibitors with structural novelty and high activity continues to be a research hotpot. Acanthopanax senticosus (Rupr. & Maxim.) Harms is used for cardiovascular disease treatment, from which no ACLY inhibitors have ever been found. In this work, we discovered three novel ACLY inhibitors, and the most potent one was isochlorogenic acid C (ICC) with an IC 50 value of 0.14 ± 0.04 μM. We found dicaffeoylquinic acids with ortho-dihydroxyphenyl groups were important features for inhibition by studying ten phenolic acids. We further investigated interactions between the highly active compound ICC and ACLY. Thermal shift assay revealed that ICC could directly bind to ACLY and improve its stability in the heating process. Enzymatic kinetic studies indicated ICC was a noncompetitive inhibitor of ACLY. This study screened flavonoids and phenolic acids, antioxidant and cytotoxic effects of Mespilus germanica leaf and fruit samples. The RP-HPLC-DAD analysis allowed the identification of hesperidin, epicatechin, epigallocatechin, benzoic, p -hydroxybenzoic, vanillic, protocatechuic, syringic, caffeic, ferulic, sinapic and p -coumaric acids in various extracts. Fruit alkaline-hydrolysable phenolic acids extract (BHPA), leaf bound phenolic acids from basic hydrolysis-2 extract (BPBH 2 ) and leaf free flavan-3-ol extract exhibited the largest DPPH, OH and NO radicals scavenging activity, respectively. Leaf flavone extract showed strong cytotoxicity on the HepG2 cell line (IC 50 = 36.49 ± 1.12 μg/mL) as well as good • OH scavenging and Fe 2+ chelation activities. Additionally, leaf bound phenolic acids from acid hydrolysis-1 extract (BPAH 1 ) demonstrated strong cytotoxicity on the HeLa cell line (IC 50 = 36.24 ± 1.89 μg/mL). This study suggests Turkish medlar as a natural source of phenolic compounds with potential application in food and pharmaceutical industries as anticancer/antioxidant agents.

Yerba Mate drink made from dried and crushed leaves and twigs of Paraguayan holly ( Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil.), which is a valuable source of bioactive substances, in particular antioxidants. The available literature lacks data on changes in the content and profile of bioactive compounds such as tannins, caffeine, the phenolic acid profile of flavonoids and carotenoids, as well as total polyphenol content and antioxidant activity in Yerba Mate infusions depending on different brewing conditions, and how different brewing conditions affect the physicochemical properties of these infusions. Therefore, this study evaluated the physicochemical properties of dried and Yerba Mate infusions prepared via single and double brewing processes at 70 °C and 100 °C. The organoleptic evaluation, as well as the instrumental color measurement, showed significant changes in the total color difference (Δ E ) and the L * a * b * chromatic coordinates of dried Yerba Mate samples and their infusions. Moreover, the research showed higher contents of tannins (mean 1.36 ± 0.14 g/100 g d.m.), caffeine (mean 17.79 ± 3.49 mg/g d.m.), carotenoids (mean 12.90 ± 0.44 μg/g d.m.), phenolic acids (mean 69.97 ± 7.10 mg/g d.m.), flavonoids (mean 5.47 ± 1.78 mg/g d.m.), total polyphenols (mean 55.26 ± 8.51 mg GAE/g d.m.), and antioxidant activity (mean 2031.98 ± 146.47 μM TEAC/g d.m.) in single-brewed Yerba Mate infusions compared to double-brewed (0.77 ± 0.12 g/100 g d.m., 14.28 ± 5.80 mg/g d.m., 12.67 ± 0.62 μg/g d.m., 57.75 ± 8.73 mg/g d.m., 3.64 ± 0.76 mg/g d.m., 33.44 ± 6.48 mg GAE/g d.m. and 1683.09 ± 155.34 μM TEAC/g d.m., respectively). In addition, infusions prepared at a lower temperature (70 °C) were characterized by a higher content of total polyphenols and higher antioxidant activity, in contrast to the tannin and carotenoid contents, the levels of which were higher at 100 °C than at 70 °C. Considering the high amount of bioactive ingredients, in particular antioxidants, and a wide range of health benefits, it is worth including Yerba Mate in the daily diet.

This study synthesized five phenolic acid-chitosan copolymers utilizing the carbodiimide-mediated chemical crosslinking reaction. Comprehensive evaluations were conducted on their structural attributes, physicochemical properties, and biological activities. Fourier transform infrared confirmed successful grafting of phenolic acids onto chitosan via amide linkages. Additionally, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy and proton nuclear magnetic resonance analyses revealed novel absorption peaks between 200 and 400 nm and 6.0-8.0 ppm, respectively, attributable to the incorporated phenolic acids. Notably, the chitosan-gentisate acid copolymer exhibited significantly enhanced biological activity (p < 0.05) compared to pure chitosan and the other four conjugates, attributed to its highest grafting degree of approximately 295.93 mg/g. Corinthian currants are dried fruits produced from Vitis vinifera L. var. Apyrena grape. This study investigated the distribution of phenolic compounds in male Wistar rat livers following two distinct Corinthian currant long-term dietary intake protocols (3 and 10% w/w). Method optimization, comparing fresh and lyophilized tissues, achieved satisfactory recoveries (>70%) for most analytes. Enzymatic hydrolysis conditions (37 °C, pH 5.0) minimally affected phenolics, but enzyme addition showed diverse effects. Hydrolyzed lyophilized liver tissue from rats consuming Corinthian currants (3 and 10% w/w) exhibited elevated levels of isorhamnetin (20.62 ± 2.27 ng/g tissue and 33.80 ± 1.38 ng/g tissue, respectively), along with similar effects for kaempferol, quercetin, and chrysin after prolonged Corinthian currant intake. This suggests their presence as phase II metabolites in the fasting-state liver. This study is the first to explore phenolic accumulation in rat liver, simulating real conditions of dried fruit consumption, as seen herein with Corinthian currant.

The research on new compounds against plant pathogens is still socially and economically important. It results from the increasing resistance of pests to plant protection products and the need to maintain high yields of crops, particularly oilseed crops used to manufacture edible and industrial oils and biofuels. We tested thirty-five semi-synthetic hydrazide-hydrazones with aromatic fragments of natural origin against phytopathogenic laccase-producing fungi such as Botrytis cinerea , Sclerotinia sclerotiorum , and Cerrena unicolor . Among the investigated molecules previously identified as potent laccase inhibitors were also strong antifungal agents against the fungal species tested. The highest antifungal activity showed derivatives of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid and salicylic aldehydes with 3- tert -butyl, phenyl, or isopropyl substituents. S. sclerotiorum appeared to be the most susceptible to the tested compounds, with the lowest IC 50 values between 0.5 and 1.8 µg/mL. We applied two variants of phytotoxicity tests for representative crop seeds and selected hydrazide-hydrazones. Most tested molecules show no or low phytotoxic effect for flax and sunflower seeds. Moreover, a positive impact on seed germination infected with fungi was observed. With the potential for application, the cytotoxicity of the hydrazide-hydrazones of choice toward MCF-10A and BALB/3T3 cell lines was lower than that of the azoxystrobin fungicide tested.

Alpinia officinarum is a commonly used spice with proven folk uses in various traditional medicines. In the current study, six compounds were isolated from its rhizomes, compounds 1-3 were identified as diarylheptanoids, while 4-6 were identified as flavonoids and phenolic acids. The isolated compounds were subjected to virtual screening against α-glucosidase, butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzymes to evaluate their potential antidiabetic and anti-Alzheimer's activities. Molecular docking and dynamics studies revealed that 3 exhibited a strong binding affinity to human a α- glucosidase crystal structure compared to acarbose. Furthermore, 2 and 5 demonstrated high potency against AChE. The virtual screening results were further supported by in vitro assays, which assessed the compounds' effects on α-glucosidase, cholinesterases, and their antioxidant activities. 5-Hydroxy-7-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1-phenylheptan-3-one (2) showed potent antioxidant effect in both ABTs and ORAC assays, while p -hydroxy cinnamic acid (6) was the most potent in the ORAC assay. In contrary, kaempferide (4) and galangin (5) showed the most potent effect in metal chelation assay. 5-Hydroxy-1,7-diphenylhepta-4,6-dien-3-one (3) and 6 revealed the most potent effect as α-glucosidase inhibitors where compound 3 showed more potent effect compared to acarbose. Galangin (5) revealed a higher selectivity to BChE, while 2 showed the most potent activity to (AChE).

Facial masks have become ubiquitous in our daily life to endow skin enough moisture and activated nutrition through mask nonwovens infused with skincare ingredients. However, the active nutrients in wet masks are prone to deterioration and deactivation. Herein, a novel multifunctional nanofiber dry mask was successfully prepared using aqueous-electrospun phenolic acid grafted chitosan/collagen peptides. When used, the functional nanofibers in the mask dissolve through spraying moisture, activating active ingredients in response to water and providing in-situ free radical scavenging, moisturizing and antibacterial effects to the skin. In this work, a series of gallic acid (GA), caffeic acid (CA), and protocatechuic acid (PA) have been studied to be grafted with chitosan to improve water solubility of chitosan (CS). Also, through aqueous electrospinning of phenolic acid-grafted chitosan/collagen peptides, a one-step green multifunctional nanofiber mask was obtained. The results showed that the mask had a 12.14 % moisturizing rate and a 94.09 % activity for removing free radicals from the skin after encountering moisture.
