Search

We construct the eROSITA X-ray catalog of radio galaxies discovered by the WERGS survey that is made by the cross-matching of the wide-area Subaru/HSC optical survey and VLA/FIRST 1.4 GHz radio survey. We find 393 eROSITA detected radio galaxies in the 0.5--2 keV band in the eFEDS field covering 140~deg$^2$. Thanks to the wide and medium depth eFEDS X-ray survey, the sample contains the rare and most X-ray luminous radio galaxies above the knee of the X-ray luminosity function, spanning 4422$. Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are thought to originate from early Universe seed black holes of mass $M_\mathrm{BH} \sim 10^2$-10$^5$ M$_{\odot}$ and grown through cosmic time. Such seeds could be powering the active galactic nuclei (AGN) found in today's dwarf galaxies. However, probing a connection between the early seeds and local SMBHs has not yet been observationally possible. Massive black holes hosted in dwarf galaxies at intermediate redshifts, on the other hand, may represent the evolved counterparts of the seeds formed at very early times. We present a sample of seven broad-line AGN in dwarf galaxies with a spectroscopic redshift ranging from z=0.35 to z=0.93. The sources are drawn from the VIPERS survey as having a stellar mass ($M_\mathrm{*}$) LMC-like derived from spectral energy distribution fitting and they are all star-forming galaxies. Six of these sources are also X-ray AGN. The AGN are powered by SMBHs of $>10^7$ M$_{\odot}$, more massive than expected from the $M_\mathrm{BH}$-$M_\mathrm{*}$ scaling relation of AGN. Based on semi-analytical simulations, we find that these objects are likely overmassive with respect to their hosts since early times (z$>$4), independently of whether they formed as heavy ($\rm \sim 10^5$ M$_\odot$) or light ($\rm \sim 10^2$ M$_\odot$) seed black holes. In our simulations, these objects tend to grow faster than their host galaxies, contradicting models of synchronized growth. The host galaxies are found to possibly evolve into massive systems by z$\sim$0, indicating that local SMBHs in massive galaxies could originate in dwarf galaxies hosting seed black holes at higher z., 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We present evidence that AGN do not reside in ``special'' environments, but instead show large-scale clustering determined by the properties of their host galaxies. Our study is based on an angular cross-correlation analysis applied to X-ray selected AGN in the COSMOS and UDS fields, spanning redshifts from $z\sim4.5$ to $z\sim0.5$. Consistent with previous studies, we find that AGN at all epochs are on average hosted by galaxies in dark matter halos of $10^{12}-10^{13}$ M$_{\odot}$, intermediate between star-forming and passive galaxies. We find, however, that the same clustering signal can be produced by inactive (i.e. non-AGN) galaxies closely matched to the AGN in spectral class, stellar mass and redshift. We therefore argue that the inferred bias for AGN lies in between the star-forming and passive galaxy populations because AGN host galaxies are comprised of a mixture of the two populations. Although AGN hosted by higher mass galaxies are more clustered than lower mass galaxies, this stellar mass dependence disappears when passive host galaxies are removed. The strength of clustering is also largely independent of AGN X-ray luminosity. We conclude that the most important property that determines the clustering in a given AGN population is the fraction of passive host galaxies. We also infer that AGN luminosity is likely not driven by environmental triggering, and further hypothesise that AGN may be a stochastic phenomenon without a strong dependence on environment., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

We present the optical and infrared properties of 39 extremely radio-loud galaxies discovered by cross-matching the Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) deep optical imaging survey and VLA/FIRST 1.4 GHz radio survey. The recent Subaru/HSC strategic survey revealed optically-faint radio galaxies (RG) down to $g_\mathrm{AB} \sim 26$, opening a new parameter space of extremely radio-loud galaxies (ERGs) with radio-loudness parameter of $\log \mathcal{R}_\mathrm{rest} = \log (f_{1.4 \mathrm{GHz,rest}}/f_{g,\mathrm{rest}}) >4$. Because of their optical faintness and small number density of $\sim1~$deg$^{-2}$, such ERGs were difficult to find in the previous wide but shallow, or deep but small area optical surveys. ERGs show intriguing properties that are different from the conventional RGs: (1) most ERGs reside above or on the star-forming main-sequence, and some of them might be low-mass galaxies with $\log (M_\star/M_\odot) < 10$. (2) ERGs exhibit a high specific black hole accretion rate, reaching the order of the Eddington limit. The intrinsic radio-loudness ($\mathcal{R}_\mathrm{int}$), defined by the ratio of jet power over bolometric radiation luminosity, is one order of magnitude higher than that of radio quasars. This suggests that ERGs harbor a unique type of active galactic nuclei (AGN) that show both powerful radiations and jets. Izumi, T., et al., We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array [C ii] 158 μm line and far-infrared (FIR) continuum emission observations toward HSC J120505.09-000027.9 (J1205-0000) at z = 6.72 with a beam size of ∼0.″8 × 0.″5 (or 4.1 kpc × 2.6 kpc), the most distant red quasar known to date. Red quasars are modestly reddened by dust and are thought to be in rapid transition from an obscured starburst to an unobscured normal quasar, driven by powerful active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback that blows out a cocoon of interstellar medium. The FIR continuum of J1205-0000 is bright, with an estimated luminosity of L FIR ∼ 3 × 1012 L o˙. The [C ii] line emission is extended on scales of r ∼ 5 kpc, greater than that of the FIR continuum. The line profiles at the extended regions are complex and broad (FWHM ∼ 630-780 km s-1). Although it is not practical to identify the nature of this extended structure, possible explanations include (i) companion/merging galaxies and (ii) massive AGN-driven outflows. For the case of (i), the companions are modestly star-forming (∼10 M o˙ yr-1) but are not detected by our Subaru optical observations (y AB,5σ = 24.4 mag). For the case of (ii), our lower limit to the cold neutral outflow rate is ∼100 M o˙ yr-1. Izumi, T., et al., We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array [C ii] 158 μm line and underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum emission observations (0.″70 × 0.″56 resolution) toward HSC J124353.93+010038.5 (J1243+0100) at z = 7.07, the only low-luminosity (M 1450 > -25 mag) quasar currently known at z > 7. The FIR continuum is bright (1.52 mJy) and resolved with a total luminosity of L FIR = 3.5 × 1012 L o˙. The spatially extended component is responsible for ∼40% of the emission. The area-integrated [C ii] spectrum shows a broad wing (FWHM = 997 km s-1, L [C ii] = 1.2 × 109 L o˙), as well as a bright core (FWHM = 235 km s-1, L [C ii] = 1.9 × 109 L o˙). This wing is the first detection of a galactic-scale quasar-driven outflow (atomic outflow rate >447 M o˙ yr-1) at z > 7. The estimated large mass-loading factor of the total outflow (e.g., ⪆9 relative to the [C ii]-based star formation rate) suggests that this outflow will soon quench the star formation of the host. The core gas dynamics are governed by rotation, with a rotation curve suggestive of a compact bulge (∼3.3 × 1010 M o˙), although it is not yet spatially resolved. Finally, we found that J1243+0100 has a black hole mass-to-dynamical mass (and -to-bulge mass) ratio of ∼0.4% (∼1%), consistent with the local value within the uncertainties. The integrated X-ray luminosity ($L_{\mathrm{X}}$) of high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) in a galaxy is correlated with its star formation rate (SFR), and the normalization of this correlation increases with redshift. Population synthesis models suggest that the redshift evolution of $L_{\mathrm{X}}$/SFR is driven by the metallicity ($Z$) dependence of HMXBs, and the first direct evidence of this connection was recently presented using galaxies at $z\sim2$. To confirm this result with more robust measurements and better constrain the $L_{\mathrm{X}}$-SFR-$Z$ relation, we have studied the $Z$ dependence of $L_{\mathrm{X}}$/SFR at lower redshifts. Using samples of star-forming galaxies at $z=0.1-0.9$ with optical spectra from the hCOSMOS and zCOSMOS surveys, we stacked \textit{Chandra} data from the COSMOS Legacy survey to measure the average $L_{\mathrm{X}}$/SFR as a function of $Z$ in three redshift ranges: $z=0.1-0.25$, $0.25-0.4$, and $0.5-0.9$. We find no significant variation of the $L_{\mathrm{X}}$-SFR-$Z$ relation with redshift. Our results provide further evidence that the $Z$ dependence of HMXBs is responsible for the redshift evolution of $L_{\mathrm{X}}$/SFR. Combining all available $z>0$ measurements together, we derive a best-fitting $L_{\mathrm{X}}$-SFR-$Z$ relation and assess how different population synthesis models describe the data. Using an automated image analysis routine on 34,476 known Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasars, we identify those with two (or more) distinct optical point sources in HSC images covering 796 deg2. We find 421 candidates out to a redshift of 4.5 of which one hundred or so are more likely after filtering out contaminating stars. Angular separations of 0.″6-4.″0 correspond to projected separations of 3-30 kpc, a range relatively unexplored for population studies of luminous dual quasars. Using Keck I/Low Resolution Imaging Spectrometer and Gemini-N/Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrometer, we spectroscopically confirm three dual quasar systems at z < 1, two of which are previously unknown out of eight observed, based on the presence of characteristic broad emission lines in each component, while highlighting that the continuum of one object in one of the pairs is reddened. In all cases, the [O iii]λ5007 emission lines have mild velocity offsets, thus the joint [O iii] line profile is not double-peaked. We find a dual quasar fraction of 0.26 ± 0.18% and no evidence for evolution. A comparison with the Horizon-AGN simulation seems to support the case of no evolution in the dual quasar fraction when broadly matching the quasar selection. These results may indicate a scenario in which the frequency of the simultaneous triggering of luminous quasars is not as sensitive as expected to the cosmic evolution of the merger rate or gas content of galaxies., R. The masses of supermassive black holes at the centres of local galaxies appear to be tightly correlated with the mass and velocity dispersions of their galactic hosts. However, the local Mbh–Mstar relation inferred from dynamically measured inactive black holes is up to an order-of-magnitude higher than some estimates from active black holes, and recent work suggests that this discrepancy arises from selection bias on the sample of dynamical black hole mass measurements. In this work, we combine X-ray measurements of the mean black hole accretion luminosity as a function of stellar mass and redshift with empirical models of galaxy stellar mass growth, integrating over time to predict the evolving Mbh–Mstar relation. The implied relation is nearly independent of redshift, indicating that stellar and black hole masses grow, on average, at similar rates. Matching the de-biased local Mbh–Mstar relation requires a mean radiative efficiency ε ≳ 0.15, in line with theoretical expectations for accretion on to spinning black holes. However, matching the ‘raw’ observed relation for inactive black holes requires ε ∼ 0.02, far below theoretical expectations. This result provides independent evidence for selection bias in dynamically estimated black hole masses, a conclusion that is robust to uncertainties in bolometric corrections, obscured active black hole fractions, and kinetic accretion efficiency. For our fiducial assumptions, they favour moderate-to-rapid spins of typical supermassive black holes, to achieve ε ∼ 0.12–0.20. Using Subaru/FOCAS and Gemini-N/GMOS, we identify three new physically associated quasar pairs having projected separations less than 20 kpc, out of 26 observed candidates. When evaluating the design of a mobile app, many designers focus on a number of varying metrics related to the user experience, namely its usability, look and feel, usefulness, and overall delight that users experience when using it. However, even the most usable, beautiful, and delightful application can have an impact on its user in a negative way. Have you ever thought about how the application might burden the user, even in light of these positive attributes? For example, maybe the game that you designed to be irresistibly engaging makes the user feel guilty about how much time she spends with it. Or consider how a food-tracking application, which allows the user to take photos of his food to monitor his diet, may violate his family rules about no phones at the dinner table. Perhaps the fitness tracker you've designed to help people be more active only serves to make them feel badly about themselves for not exercising after sustaining an injury.

We investigate the cosmic evolution of the ratio between black hole mass (MBH) and host galaxy total stellar mass (Mstellar) out to z~2.5 for a sample of 100 X-ray-selected moderate-luminosity, broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the Chandra-COSMOS Legacy Survey. By taking advantage of the deep multi-wavelength photometry and spectroscopy in the COSMOS field, we measure in a uniform way the galaxy total stellar mass using a SED decomposition technique and the black hole mass based on broad emission line measurements and single-epoch virial estimates. Our sample of AGN host galaxies has total stellar masses of 10^10-12Msun, and black hole masses of 10^7.0-9.5Msun. Combining our sample with the relatively bright AGN samples from the literature, we find no significant evolution of the MBH-Mstellar relation with black hole-to-host total stellar mass ratio of MBH/Mstellar~0.3% at all redshifts probed. We conclude that the average black hole-to-host stellar mass ratio appears to be consistent with the local value within the uncertainties, suggesting a lack of evolution of the MBH-Mstellar relation up to z~2.5., 16 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Background: As people increasingly receive personal health information through technology, there is increased importance for this information to be communicated with empathy and consideration for the patient’s experience of consuming it. Although technology enables people to have more frequent and faster access to their health information, it could also cause unnecessary anxiety, distress, or confusion because of the sensitive and complex nature of the information and its potential to provide information that could be considered bad news. Objective: The aim of this study was to uncover insights for the design of health information technologies that potentially communicate bad news about health such as the result of a diagnosis, increased risk for a chronic or terminal disease, or overall declining health. Methods: On the basis of a review of established guidelines for clinicians on communicating bad news, we developed an interview guide and conducted interviews with patients, patients’ family members, and clinicians on their experience of delivering and receiving the diagnosis of a serious disease. We then analyzed the data using a thematic analysis to identify overall themes from a perspective of identifying ways to translate these strategies to technology design. Results: We describe qualitative results combining an analysis of the clinical guidelines for sharing bad health news with patients and interviews on clinicians’ specific strategies to communicate bad news and the emotional and informational support that patients and their family members seek. Specific strategies clinicians use included preparing for the patients’ visit, anticipating patients’ feelings, building a partnership of trust with patients, acknowledging patients’ physical and emotional discomfort, setting up a scene where patients can process the information, helping patients build resilience and giving hope, matching the level of information to the patients’ level of understanding, communicating face-to-face, if possible, and using nonverbal means. Patient and family member experiences included internal turmoil and emotional distress when receiving bad news and emotional and informational support that patients and family members seek. Conclusions: The results from this study identify specific strategies for health information technologies to better promote empathic communication when they communicate concerning health news. We distill the findings from our study into design hypotheses for ways technologies may be able to help people better cope with the possibility of receiving bad health news, including tailoring the delivery of information to the patients’ individual preferences, supporting interfaces for sharing patients’ context, mitigating emotional stress from self-monitoring data, and identifying clear, actionable steps patients can take next.

We present deep near-infrared spectroscopy of six quasars at 6.15.8 quasars with measured black hole masses. From single-epoch mass measurements based on MgII2798, we find a wide range in black hole masses, from M_BH=10^7.6 to 10^9.3 Msun. The Eddington ratios L_bol/L_Edd range from 0.16 to 1.1, but the majority of the HSC quasars are powered by M_BH=10^9 Msun supermassive black holes (SMBHs) accreting at sub-Eddington rates. The Eddington ratio distribution of the HSC quasars is inclined to lower accretion rates than those of Willott et al. (2010a), who measured the black hole masses for similarly faint z=6 quasars. This suggests that the global Eddington ratio distribution is wider than has previously been thought. The presence of M_BH=10^9 Msun SMBHs at z=6 cannot be explained with constant sub-Eddington accretion from stellar remnant seed black holes. Therefore, we may be witnessing the first buildup of the most massive black holes in the first billion years of the universe, the accretion activity of which is transforming from active growth to a quiescent phase. Measurements of a larger complete sample of z>6 low-luminosity quasars, as well as deeper observations with future facilities will enable us to better understand the early SMBH growth in the reionization epoch., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We investigate the multi-wavelength properties of host galaxies of 3701 X-ray-selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) out to z~5 in the Chandra-COSMOS Legacy Survey. Thanks to the extensive multi-wavelength photometry available in the COSMOS field, we derive AGN luminosities, host stellar masses, and star formation rates (SFRs) via a multi-component SED fitting technique. Type 1 and Type 2 AGNs follow the same intrinsic Lx-L6um relation, suggesting that mid-infrared emission is a reasonably good measure of the AGN accretion power regardless of obscuration. We find that there is a strong increase in Type 1 AGN fraction toward higher AGN luminosity, possibly due to the fact that Type 1 AGNs tend to be hosted by more massive galaxies. The AGN luminosity and SFR are consistent with an increase toward high stellar mass, while both the Mstellar-dependence is weaker towards the high-mass end, which could be interpreted as a consequence of quenching both star formation and AGN activity in massive galaxies. AGN host galaxies tend to have SFRs that are consistent with normal star-forming galaxies, independent of AGN luminosities. We confirm that black hole accretion rate and SFR are correlated up to z~5, when forming stars. The majority (~73%) of our AGN sample are faint in the far-infrared, implying that the moderate-luminosity AGNs seem to be still active after the star formation is suppressed. It is not certain whether AGN activity plays a role in quenching the star formation. We present the X-ray properties of 108 Dust-Obscured Galaxies (DOGs; F$_{24 \mu m}$/F$_{R} >$ 1000) in the COSMOS field, all of which detected in at least three far-infrared bands with the Herschel Observatory. Out of the entire sample, 22 are individually detected in the hard 2-8 keV X-ray band by the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey, allowing us to classify them as AGN. Of them, 6 (27%) are Compton Thick AGN candidates with column densities N$_{H}$$>$10$^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$ while 15 are moderately obscured AGNs with 10$^{22}$ $, Comment: To be published in ApJ

Dwarf galaxies are thought to host the remnants of the early Universe seed black holes (BHs) and to be dominated by supernova feedback. However, recent studies suggest that BH feedback could also strongly impact their growth. We report the discovery of 35 dwarf galaxies hosting radio AGN out to redshift $\sim$3.4, which constitutes the highest-redshift sample of AGN in dwarf galaxies. The galaxies are drawn from the VLA-COSMOS 3 GHz Large Project and all are star-forming. After removing the contribution from star formation to the radio emission, we find a range of AGN radio luminosities of $L^\mathrm{AGN}_\mathrm{1.4 GHz} \sim 10^{37}$-$10^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The bolometric luminosities derived from the fit of their spectral energy distribution are $\gtrsim 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$, in agreement with the presence of AGN in these dwarf galaxies. The 3 GHz radio emission of most of the sources is compact and the jet powers range from $Q_\mathrm{jet} \sim 10^{42}$ to 10$^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$. These values, as well as the finding of jet efficiencies $\geq 10$ \% in more than 50\% of the sample, indicate that dwarf galaxies can host radio jets as powerful as those of massive radio galaxies whose jet mechanical feedback can strongly affect the formation of stars in the host galaxy. We conclude that AGN feedback can also have a very strong impact on dwarf galaxies, either triggering or hampering star formation and possibly the material available for BH growth. Linking a symbol to the object it represents is a skill that develops gradually over the first few years of life. However, prior work shows that frequent use of this capacity makes it unintuitive for adults to recognize it as a challenge for young children. We hypothesized that this disconnect would manifest in software interfaces designed for young children, such that applications would embed symbols that the target audience would fail to understand. We conducted a randomized controlled trial with 34 preschoolers between the ages of 2 and 5 to assess their ability to work with user interface elements that require symbolic mappings. In particular, we assessed, (1) symbolic progress bars and (2) demonstrations of touch interactions by an on-screen cartoon hand. We found that these techniques are entirely inaccessible for children under 3 and that they require specific design choices to facilitate understanding in children between the ages of 3 and 5. Among a sample of 94 popular apps targeting children in this age range, we found that these symbolic techniques are incorporated into 44% of apps for preschoolers. We further found that embellishing symbolic elements with visual detail, a common practice in apps for preschoolers, increases children's cognitive burden and is an additional barrier to performing the symbolic mappings necessary to use these interfaces. Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and is one of the leading causes of male cancer death in the world. Recently, in the course of our screening for a novel anticancer compound, we synthesized carbocyclic analogs of pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine nucleoside; compounds 5, and 6. In the current study, we report the effects of compound 5 on pleiotropic induction of cell death via up-regulation of AR-associated p21(Cip1) protein in prostate cancer cells with different androgen responsiveness, such as LNCaP (androgen-dependent and -sensitive), LNCaP(C4-2) (androgen-independent and -sensitive; androgen-refractory), and DU145 (androgen-independent and -insensitive) cells. The treatment of LNCaP cells with 6 μM compound 5 for 24 h stimulated the androgen receptor (AR) activity and dramatically up-regulated transcription (56-fold) of p21(Cip1), which, in turn, induces typical apoptosis in the cells. However, induction of apoptosis through up-regulation (23-fold) of AR-associated p21(Cip1) achieved in LNCaP(C4-2) cells was possible by intensive cell treatment with compound 5 (9 μM, 48 h), because the cells are less sensitive and independent to androgen than LNCaP cells. Furthermore, 6 μM compound 5-treated DU145 cells, which exhibit extremely low AR activation due to no androgen responsiveness and dependency, showed neither up-regulation of p21(Cip1) nor apoptotic induction. Instead, a different type of cell death, autophagy-like death through the LC3B-associated autophagosome formation, was obviously induced in DU145 cells. Taken together, our results suggest that pleiotropic induction of prostate cancer cell death by compound 5 is determined by how efficiently and how abundantly androgen-dependent activation of the AR occurs, whereas compound 6 shows no induction of apoptosis in LNCaP cells.

We study the co-evolution between the black hole accretion rate (BHAR) and the star formation rate (SFR) in different galaxy life phases: main sequence star-forming galaxies, quiescent and starburst galaxies at different cosmic epochs. We take advantage of the X-ray data from the Chandra COSMOS-Legacy survey and of the extensive multiwavelength ancillary observations in the COSMOS field presented in the COSMOS2015 catalog. The merging of two galaxies has been proposed to realize the conditions to successfully launch and drive such jets into the intergalactic medium. However, evidences for the operation of this mechanism are scarce. Here we report the first unambiguous detection of an ongoing merger of a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy, TXS 2116$-$077, hosting a closely aligned, $\gamma$-ray emitting relativistic jet with a Seyfert 2 galaxy at a separation of $\sim$12 kpc, using the observations taken with 8.2 m Subaru telescope. Our subsequent followup observations with 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias, 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope, and Chandra X-ray observatory have provided what is likely to be the first glimpse of the merging environment hosting a closely aligned relativistic jet. Our finding that the jet is considerably younger than the merger demonstrates that jet activity can be triggered by galaxy mergers and that $\gamma$-ray detected narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies represent the beginning phase of that activity. We present rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) and optical size measurements of AGN hosts and star-forming galaxies in the COSMOS field, enabled by high-resolution ALMA/1 mm (0.1 arcsec - 0.4 arcsec) and HST/F814W imaging (~ 0.1 arcsec). We report on the results of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) detection by NuSTAR performed in three extragalactic survey fields (COSMOS, UDS, ECDFS) in three hard bands, namely H1 (8-16 keV), H2 (16-24 keV) and VH (35-55 keV). The aggregated area of the surveys is $\sim 2.7$ deg$^2$. While a large number of sources is detected in the H1 band (72 at the $97\%$ level of reliability), the H2 band directly probing close to the peak of the Cosmic X-ray Background (CXB) returns four significant detections, and two tentative, although not significant, detections are found in the VH band. All the sources detected above 16 keV are also detected at lower energies. We compute the integral number counts for sources in such bands, which show broad consistency with population synthesis models of the CXB. We furthermore identify two Compton-thick AGNs, one in the COSMOS field, associated with a hard and faint Chandra source, and one in the UDS field, never detected in the X-ray band before. Both sources are at the same redshift $z \sim 1.25$, which shifts their Compton-hump into the H1 band, and were previously missed in the usually employed NuSTAR bands, confirming the potential of using the H1 band to discover obscured AGNs at $z > 1$ in deep surveys., 12 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present a catalog of 10718 objects in the COSMOS field observed through multi-slit spectroscopy with the Deep Imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph (DEIMOS) on the Keck II telescope in the wavelength range ~5500-9800A. The catalog contains 6617 objects with high-quality spectra (two or more spectral features), and 1798 objects with a single spectroscopic feature confirmed by the photometric redshift. For 2024 typically faint objects we could not obtain reliable redshifts. The objects have been selected from a variety of input catalogs based on multi-wavelength observations in the field, and thus have a diverse selection function, which enables the study of the diversity in the galaxy population. The magnitude distribution of our objects is peaked at I_AB~23 and K_AB~21, with a secondary peak at K_AB~24. We sample a broad redshift distribution in the range 00.65 with chance probabilities 10 Mpc. An object-to-object comparison with a multitude of other spectroscopic samples in the same field shows that our DEIMOS sample is among the best in terms of fraction of spectroscopic failures and relative redshift accuracy. We have determined the fraction of spectroscopic blends to about 0.8% in our sample. This is likely a lower limit and at any rate well below the most pessimistic expectations. Interestingly, we find evidence for strong lensing of Ly-alpha background emitters within the slits of 12 of our target galaxies, increasing their apparent density by about a factor of 4., Comment: 28 pages, 11 figures and 5 tables. Objective Health information technology could provide valuable support for inter-professional collaboration to address complex health issues, but current HIT systems do not adequately support such collaboration. Existing theoretical research on supporting collaborative work can help inform the design of collaborative HIT systems. Using the example of supporting collaboration between child development service providers, we describe a deductive approach that leverages concepts from the literature and analyzes qualitative user-needs data to aid in collaborative system design. Materials and Methods We use the Collaboration Space Model to guide the deductive qualitative analysis of interviews focused on the use of information technology to support child development. We deductively analyzed 44 interviews from two separate research initiatives and included data from a wide range of stakeholder groups including parents and various service providers. We summarized the deductively coded interview excerpts using quantitative and qualitative methods. Results The deductive analysis method provided a rich set of design data, highlighting heterogeneity in work processes, barriers to adequate communication, and gaps in stakeholder knowledge in supporting child development work. Discussion Deductive qualitative analysis considering constructs from a literature-based model provided useful, actionable data to aid in design. Design implications underscore functions needed to adequately share data across many stakeholders. More work is needed to validate our design implications and to better understand the situations where specific system features would be most useful. Conclusions Deductive analysis considering model constructs provides a useful approach to designing collaborative HIT systems, allowing designers to consider both empirical user data and existing knowledge from the literature. This method has the potential to improve designs for collaborative HIT systems.

We present a sample of 40 AGN in dwarf galaxies at redshifts $z \lesssim$ 2.4. The galaxies are drawn from the \textit{Chandra} COSMOS-Legacy survey as having stellar masses $10^{7}\leq M_{*}\leq3 \times 10^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$. Most of the dwarf galaxies are star-forming. After removing the contribution from star formation to the X-ray emission, the AGN luminosities of the 40 dwarf galaxies are in the range $L_\mathrm{0.5-10 keV} \sim10^{39} - 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$. With 12 sources at $z > 0.5$, our sample constitutes the highest-redshift discovery of AGN in dwarf galaxies. The record-holder is cid\_1192, at $z = 2.39$ and with $L_\mathrm{0.5-10 keV} \sim 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$. One of the dwarf galaxies has $M_\mathrm{*} = 6.6 \times 10^{7}$ M$_{\odot}$ and is the least massive galaxy found so far to host an AGN. All the AGN are of type 2 and consistent with hosting intermediate-mass black holes (BHs) with masses $\sim 10^{4} - 10^{5}$ M$_{\odot}$ and typical Eddington ratios $> 1\%$. We also study the evolution, corrected for completeness, of AGN fraction with stellar mass, X-ray luminosity, and redshift in dwarf galaxies out to $z$ = 0.7. We find that the AGN fraction for $10^{9}< M_{*}\leq3 \times 10^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$ and $L_\mathrm{X} \sim 10^{41}-10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$ is $\sim$0.4\% for $z \leq$ 0.3 and that it decreases with X-ray luminosity and decreasing stellar mass. Unlike massive galaxies, the AGN fraction seems to decrease with redshift, suggesting that AGN in dwarf galaxies evolve differently than those in high-mass galaxies. While major mergers have long been proposed as a driver of both AGN activity and the M-sigma relation, studies of moderate to high redshift Seyfert-luminosity AGN hosts have found little evidence for enhanced rates of interactions. However, both theory and observation suggest that while these AGN may be fueled by stochastic accretion and secular processes, high-luminosity, high-redshift, and heavily obscured AGN are the AGN most likely to be merger-driven. To better sample this population of AGN, we turn to infrared selection in the CANDELS/COSMOS field. Compared to their lower-luminosity and less obscured X-ray-only counterparts, IR-only AGN (luminous, heavily obscured AGN) are more likely to be classified as either irregular (50$^{+12}_{-12}$% vs. 9$^{+5}_{-2}$%) or asymmetric (69$^{+9}_{-13}$% vs. 17$^{+6}_{-4}$%) and are less likely to have a spheroidal component (31$^{+13}_{-9}$% vs. 77$^{+4}_{-6}$%). Furthermore, IR-only AGN are also significantly more likely than X-ray-only AGN (75$^{+8}_{-13}$% vs. 31$^{+6}_{-6}$%) to be classified either as interacting or merging in a way that significantly disturbs the host galaxy or disturbed though not clearly interacting or merging, which potentially represents the late stages of a major merger. This suggests that while major mergers may not contribute significantly to the fueling of Seyfert luminosity AGN, interactions appear to play a more dominant role in the triggering and fueling of high-luminosity heavily obscured AGN., 13 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

To help reach populations of children without consistent Internet access or medical care, we designed and implemented Baby Steps Text, an automated text message-based screening tool. We conducted preliminary user research via storyboarding and prototyping with target populations and then developed a fully functional system. In a one-month deployment study, we evaluated the feasibility of Baby Steps Text with fourteen families. During a one-month study, 13 out of 14 participants were able to learn and use the response structure (yielding 2.88% error rate) and complete a child development screener entirely via text messages. All post-study survey respondents agreed Baby Steps Text was understandable and easy to use, which was also confirmed through post-study interviews. Some survey respondents expressed liking Baby Steps Text because it was easy, quick, convenient to use, and delivered helpful, timely information. Our initial deployment study shows text messaging is a feasible tool for supporting parents in tracking and monitoring their child’s development.

Many stakeholders with different social and professional backgrounds can be involved in supporting a child's development. Experts note the importance of collaboration between all of these stakeholders in order to adequately support a child. Electronic systems have the potential to facilitate collaboration, and experts have suggested that models and theories relevant to collaboration can guide the design of collaborative systems. In this early exploratory work we investigate the relevance of various models and theories of collaboration and social interaction to the complex child development space.

Aims.We perform clustering measurements of 800 X-ray selectedChandraCOSMOS Legacy (CCL) Type 2 active galactic nuclei (AGN) with known spectroscopic redshift to probe the halo mass dependence on AGN host galaxy properties, such as galaxy stellar massMstar, star formation rate (SFR), and specific black hole accretion rate (BHAR;λBHAR) in the redshift rangez = [0−3].Methods.We split the sample of AGN with known spectroscopic redshits according toMstar, SFR andλBHAR, while matching the distributions in terms of the other parameters, including redshift. We measured the projected two-point correlation functionwp(rp) and modeled the clustering signal, for the different subsamples, with the two-halo term to derive the large-scale biasband corresponding typical mass of the hosting halo.Results.We find no significant dependence of the large-scale bias and typical halo mass on galaxy stellar mass and specific BHAR for CCL Type 2 AGN at meanz ∼ 1, while a negative dependence on SFR is observed, i.e. lower SFR AGN reside in richer environment. Mock catalogs of AGN, matched to have the same X-ray luminosity, stellar mass,λBHAR, and SFR of CCL Type 2 AGN, almost reproduce the observedMstar − Mh,λBHAR − Mhand SFR–Mhrelations, when assuming a fraction of satellite AGNfAGNsat∼ 0.15. This corresponds to a ratio of the probabilities of satellite to central AGN of being activeQ ∼ 2. Mock matched normal galaxies follow a slightly steeperMstar − Mhrelation, in which low mass mock galaxies reside in less massive halos than mock AGN of similar mass. Moreover, matched mock normal galaxies are less biased than mock AGN with similar specific BHAR and SFR, at least forQ > 1.

The properties of low-mass galaxies hosting central black holes provide clues about the formation and evolution of the progenitors of supermassive black holes. In this letter, we present HSC-XD 52, a spectroscopically confirmed low-mass active galactic nucleus (AGN) at an intermediate redshift of $z\sim0.56$. We detect this object as a very luminous X-ray source coincident with a galaxy observed by the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) as part of a broader search for low-mass AGN. We constrain its stellar mass through spectral energy distribution modeling to be LMC-like at $M_\star \approx 3 \times 10^9 M_\odot$, placing it in the dwarf regime. We estimate a central black hole mass of $M_\mathrm{BH} \sim 10^{6} M_\odot$. With an average X-ray luminosity of $L_X \approx 3.5 \times 10^{43}~\mathrm{erg}~\mathrm{s}^{-1}$, HSC-XD 52 is among the most luminous X-ray selected AGN in dwarf galaxies.
