Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become a crucial tool for evaluating mediastinal masses considering that several lesions that appear indeterminate on computed tomography and radiography can be differentiated on MRI. Using a three-compartment model to localize the mass and employing a basic knowledge of MRI, radiologists can easily diagnose mediastinal masses. Here, we review the use of MRI in evaluating mediastinal masses and present the images of various mediastinal masses categorized using the International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group's three-compartment classification system. These masses include thymic hyperplasia, thymic cyst, pericardial cyst, thymoma, mediastinal hemangioma, lymphoma, mature teratoma, bronchogenic cyst, esophageal duplication cyst, mediastinal thyroid carcinoma originating from ectopic thyroid tissue, mediastinal liposarcoma, mediastinal pancreatic pseudocyst, neurogenic tumor, meningocele, and plasmacytoma.

As one of the major intractable allergic disorders, atopic inflammation is commonly accompanied by itching, dry skin, and inflammation. Atopic inflammation deteriorates the quality of life and has no fundamental cure, so it is crucial to urgently explore and develop natural resources for long-term treatment without any side effects. This study aimed to verify Torilis japonica extract (TJE)’s relieving effect and mechanism against atopic inflammation using skin cells and skin equivalent models, as well as to investigate torilin’s effect (obtained from TJE) and other unknown components as marker compounds. Torilin concentration was verified in TJE using high-performance liquid chromatography and analyzed the unknown components using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Furthermore, TJE’s cytotoxicity, regenerative effect, and cell cycle regulation effects were confirmed using skin cells with atopic inflammation (human dermal fibroblasts and HaCaT keratinocytes) by using TNF-α and IFN-γ treatments. Consequently, TJE was demonstrated to regulate TARC and CTACK expressions as chemokines and those of interleukin-4, -5, and -13 as cytokines related to atopic inflammation. TJE was further confirmed to affect the matrix metalloproteinase-1, -2, and -9 expressions, which are essential in skin damage. Lastly, this study confirmed TJE’s relieving effect against atopic inflammation through a 3D skin model and RhCE model using human dermal fibroblasts and HaCaT keratinocytes. These findings on atopic inflammation verified torilin’s relieving effects and TJE’s other components.

Barley sprouts are known to have several effective physiological activities. In this study, the anti-obesity effect of a barley sprout hot water extract (BSE) was confirmed. Saponarin was quantitatively analyzed in BSE using HPLC, and the inhibitory effect on 3T3-L1 pre-adipocyte differentiation into adipocytes was confirmed by Oil Red O staining, TG assay, and Western blotting. In addition, the inhibitory effect of BSE on adipocyte growth was confirmed through glucose uptake and lipolysis of adipocytes. C57/BL/6N mice were induced to obesity with a high-fat diet, and BSE was administered to confirm the effect on an animal model. Weight gain, morphological changes in adipose tissue, changes in the food efficiency ratio, and blood biochemical changes were observed, and an improvement effect on fatty liver was confirmed. As a result, the anti-obesity effect of BSE was confirmed in vitro, and it was confirmed that this effect was also effective in vivo and that it could be helpful in the treatment of obesity-related diseases.

Purpose: This study utilized a radiomics approach combined with a machine learning algorithm to distinguish primary lung cancer (LC) from solitary lung metastasis (LM) in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients with a solitary pulmonary nodule (SPN). Materials and Methods: In a retrospective study, 239 patients who underwent chest computerized tomography (CT) at three different institutions between 2011 and 2019 and were diagnosed as primary LC or solitary LM were included. The data from the first institution were divided into training and internal testing datasets. The data from the second and third institutions were used as an external testing dataset. Radiomic features were extracted from the intra and perinodular regions of interest (ROI). After a feature selection process, Support vector machine (SVM) was used to train models for classifying between LC and LM. The performances of the SVM classifiers were evaluated with both the internal and external testing datasets. The performances of the model were compared to those of two radiologists who reviewed the CT images of the testing datasets for the binary prediction of LC versus LM. Results: The SVM classifier trained with the radiomic features from the intranodular ROI and achieved the sensitivity/specificity of 0.545/0.828 in the internal test dataset, and 0.833/0.964 in the external test dataset, respectively. The SVM classifier trained with the combined radiomic features from the intra- and perinodular ROIs achieved the sensitivity/specificity of 0.545/0.966 in the internal test dataset, and 0.833/1.000 in the external test data set, respectively. Two radiologists demonstrated the sensitivity/specificity of 0.545/0.966 and 0.636/0.828 in the internal test dataset, and 0.917/0.929 and 0.833/0.929 in the external test dataset, which were comparable to the performance of the model trained with the combined radiomics features. Conclusion: Our results suggested that the machine learning classifiers trained using radiomics features of SPN in CRC patients can be used to distinguish the primary LC and the solitary LM with a similar level of performance to radiologists.

Microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) in polymer has attracted increasing applications with the fully bioderived nanocomposites. Polymer composites from polylactide (PLA) and MFC were prepared using two different fiber preparations. Freezedried MFC was prepared and directly mixed with PLA in an internal mixer. The MFC premixed with PLA in an organic solvent was prepared, followed by an internal mixer for another composite. In addition, grafting cellulose on PLA using a compatibilizer was performed. In this research, composites containing 10 wt% MFC were used to investigate the influence of processing and compatibilizer on the mechanical and thermal properties. The processing procedure had a great influence on the mechanical and physical properties. The tensile strength was increased with filler loading and showed different values depending on the premixing step prior to processing. The storage modulus and loss tangent confirmed that the compatibilizer acted as the role of a bridge between filler and matrix, enhancing the mechanical properties. This experiment was conducted to compare the effect of pretreatment on the change of mechanical and thermal properties by using freeze-dried cellulose and cellulose suspension substituted with an organic solvent.

Fusarium is a large genus of filamentous fungi that are rarely associated with disease in humans. In the clinical setting, Fusarium species are often difficult to distinguish from other fungal organisms, particularly Aspergillus species. Invasive fungal pneumonia caused by Fusarium species has rarely been reported, especially in immunocompetent patients. In this study, we reported a case of invasive Fusarium pneumonia in a previously healthy 68-year-old woman. The disease was initially misdiagnosed as invasive Aspergillus pneumonia because of the similarity in radiologic and histopathologic findings between these conditions. After Fusarium was identified via microbiological analysis, the antifungal agent was changed, and the patient recovered fully.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether androgen receptor expression in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is associated with F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake and to identify predictive factors of F-FDG uptake in TNBC. METHODS We retrospectively assessed data of 156 surgically resected primary TNBC in 156 consecutive patients who underwent F-FDG PET/computed tomography between July 2013 and May 2017. Clinicopathologic features, including androgen receptor expression, were categorized and the distribution of maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) was compared between the groups. We also evaluated the correlations between the predictive factors and SUVmax. RESULTS Median SUVmax was higher in the androgen receptor-negative group than in the androgen receptor-positive group (8.8 vs. 7.1, P = 0.026) with negative correlation between androgen receptor and SUVmax (P = 0.041, correlation coefficient (r) = -0.163). On multivariate regression analysis, tumor size (>20 mm), histological grade, Ki-67 (≥14%), and the presence of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) were significantly associated with SUVmax (P

The apocrine morphology of the breast is observed in a broad pathological spectrum, ranging from benign cysts to invasive carcinomas. However, the number of clinical research investigating malignant apocrine lesions is limited. This study retrospectively reviewed the data of patients with malignant apocrine lesions admitted in a tertiary center between January 2004 and December 2021, based on the radiology-pathology correlation and the recent advances in their status to enhance the therapeutic implications of androgen receptor (AR). Among the 37 patients with lesions, 27 (73.0%) had triple-negative subtypes with predominant AR expression. The radiological features of malignant apocrine lesions did not differ from those of typical invasive ductal carcinoma or ductal carcinoma in situ. This study demonstrated that knowledge on the imaging features of malignant apocrine lesions and their histological basis could enhance the adoption of new targeted therapies in patients with this particular type of breast cancer.

A mediastinal germ cell tumor with a sarcomatous component is extremely rare and is accompanied by a poor prognosis. Clinical and radiologic diagnosis is very difficult. Herein, we report a rare case of anterior mediastinal malignant teratoma containing a growing liposarcomatous component and detail the diagnostic process. The case was diagnosed by repeated transthoracic needle biopsy and correlated with changes in follow-up chest computed tomography and serum tumor markers. We also provide a review of the literature.

Rationale: Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is an uncommon and aggressive hematologic malignancy that arises from plasmacytoid dendritic cells. BPDCN typically presents with skin lesions with or without involvement of lymph nodes, peripheral blood, or bone marrow. However, breast involvement of BPDCN is rare and there has been no report describing the radiologic features of BPDCN within breast parenchyma. Patient concerns: We report a case of a 47-year-old woman who presented with an incidentally detected hypermetabolic breast lesion on PET/CT with concurrent right cheek plaque. Diagnoses: Skin biopsy was performed for the right cheek plaque. Mammography and breast ultrasonography were performed to evaluate the breast lesion. The lesion was depicted as a 2.5 cm sized focal asymmetry on mammogram and an irregular heterogeneous echoic mass within the mammary zone of the right upper outer breast. Core needle biopsy was performed for the breast lesion. Histologic diagnosis of the two lesions was BPDCN. Interventions: The patient was treated with induction and consolidation chemotherapy and received allogenic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation. Outcomes: The patient remains in complete remission state without relapse at 34 months since initial diagnosis. Lessons: This is the first case of BPDCN manifested as a breast parenchymal mass and assessed by diagnostic breast imaging tools (mammography and ultrasonography). This case report is significant for BPDCN within the breast parenchyma and presenting rare radiologic description of BPDCN.

A suction muffler is frequently used to control noise generated by impulsive pressure fluctuation induced by the piston/valve in a reciprocating compressor. However, the suction muffler adversely affects the compressor performance because it causes an additional pressure drop and heat transfer. In this study, with the aim of considering the complex interaction between acoustic waves and flow, both the flow performance and the acoustic performance of a suction muffler are simultaneously investigated by solving three-dimensional compressible Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations with high-order computational aeroacoustics schemes. To confirm the validity of the proposed numerical scheme for the simulation of acoustic waves, the transmission loss of a simple expansion muffler is predicted and compared with theoretical and experimental results. Then, performances of the target suction muffler are predicted and analyzed. On the basis of the analysis results, a new muffler is designed and its performances are predicted and compared with those of the original one. Finally, validation experiments are performed, whose results confirm improvements in the flow and acoustic performances of the new muffler design.

Sellar spine, a bony spur extending anteriorly from the dorsum sellae, is a very rare anatomical variant. Several hypotheses regarding its etiology have been proposed, including the strongly supported theory of a cephalic ossified notochordal remnant. Sellar spine is usually detected incidentally in patients who have no definite symptoms, but several cases have reportedly accompanied endocrinopathies such as precocious puberty, hypopituitarism, or galactorrhea/oligomenorrhea. However, no published reports have described sellar spine in a patient with Cushing’s syndrome. We herein report a case of sellar spine detected during the evaluation of Cushing’s disease in a 29-year-old woman who underwent inferior petrosal sinus sampling, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and exploratory surgery. There was no evidence of a pituitary microadenoma, but a sellar spine was present in the operative field. Thus, the sellar spine might have caused Cushing’s syndrome in this case, although the exact mechanism is unknown.

Phyllodes tumor (PT) of the breast is a relatively rare fibroepithelial tumor that accounts for < 1% of primary breast neoplasms. PT is classified histologically as benign, borderline, or malignant, and a malignant PT has greater potential to metastasize than benign PT. Although almost all other organs can be affected, common metastatic sites are the lung and bone via the hematogenous route. There have been several studies reporting cutaneous and soft tissue metastases of PT, though the incidence is rare. Herein, we report a very rare case of scalp metastasis of malignant PT that was diagnosed via skin biopsy and surgical excision.

Objective Avoiding a catastrophic outcome may be a more realistic goal than achieving functional independence in the treatment of acute stroke in octogenarians. This study aimed to investigate predictors of catastrophic outcome in elderly patients after an endovascular thrombectomy with an acute anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (LVO). Materials and Methods Data from 82 patients aged ≥ 80 years, who were treated with thrombectomy for acute anterior circulation LVO, were analyzed. The association between clinical/imaging variables and catastrophic outcomes was assessed. A catastrophic outcome was defined as a modified Rankin Scale score of 4–6 at 90 days. Results Successful reperfusion was achieved in 61 patients (74.4%), while 47 patients (57.3%) had a catastrophic outcome. The 90-day mortality rate of the treated patients was 15.9% (13/82). The catastrophic outcome group had a significantly lower baseline diffusion-weighted imaging-Alberta stroke program early CT score (DWI-ASPECTS) (7 vs. 8, p = 0.014) and a longer procedure time (42 minutes vs. 29 minutes, p = 0.031) compared to the non-catastrophic outcome group. Successful reperfusion was significantly less frequent in the catastrophic outcome group (63.8% vs. 88.6%, p = 0.011) compared to the non-catastrophic outcome group. In a binary logistic regression analysis, DWI-ASPECTS (odds ratio [OR], 0.709; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.524–0.960; p = 0.026) and successful reperfusion (OR, 0.242; 95% CI, 0.071–0.822; p = 0.023) were independent predictors of a catastrophic outcome. Conclusion Baseline infarct size and reperfusion status were independently associated with a catastrophic outcome after endovascular thrombectomy in elderly patients aged ≥ 80 years with acute anterior circulation LVO.

Minute pulmonary meningothelial - like nodule (MPMN) is a common but poorly understood entity, which is benign or reactive in nature and has unknown etiology. MPMN can show single or multiple involvements associated with malignant conditions including pulmonary adenocarcinoma in some cases. The most common radiologic findings are non - specific small nodules, which often simulate pulmonary hematogeneous metastasis. We report a case of diffuse MPMNs presenting as multiple peribronchial consolidations containing patent air bronchogram, which is quite different from the previously reported radiologic findings.

Purpose To retrospectively compare long-term outcomes of conventional chemoembolization plus radiofrequency (RF) ablation vs those of surgical resection in patients with a single 3–5-cm hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Materials and Methods From January 2008 to December 2017, 139 of 623 patients who underwent surgical resection and 60 of 186 patients who underwent chemoembolization/RF ablation in a single center were compared with respect to local tumor progression (LTP), intrahepatic distant recurrence (IDR), disease-free survival (DFS), overall survival (OS), major complications, and hospital stay before and after propensity-score matching. Results Mean follow-up periods were similar in the chemoembolization/RF ablation and surgical resection groups (41.9 mo vs 48.4 mo). Three (5%) and 17 (28.3%) patients in the chemoembolization/RF ablation group and 12 (8.6%) and 57 (41.0%) patients in the surgical resection group showed LTP and IDR (P = .366 and P =.114, respectively). At 1, 3, and 5 years, respective DFS rates were 88.1%, 65.3%, and 49.0% for chemoembolization/RF ablation and 84.2%, 58.2%, and 46.5% for surgical resection (P = .294). Moreover, respective OS rates were 95.0%, 73.5%, and 54.0% for chemoembolization/RF ablation and 97.1%, 87.4%, and 75.0% for surgical resection (P = .055). After matching (n = 52), therapeutic outcomes remained similar (P = .370, P = .110, P = .230, and P = .760, respectively). Surgical resection was associated with higher complication rates (P = .015) and longer hospital stays (8.4 d ± 3.7 vs 16.9 d ± 7.0; P Conclusions Conventional chemoembolization combined with RF ablation may be feasible for single 3–5-cm HCCs, with comparable therapeutic outcomes vs surgical resection and shorter hospital stays.

To define and correlate multidetector CT (MDCT) findings of pancreatic fistula after pancreaticoduodenectomy with surgical grading based on the 2016 Revised International Study Group of Pancreatic Fistula (ISGPF) classification. Between May 2011 and December 2016, 235 patients with periampullary tumor underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy and postoperative MDCT. Patients were classified into three groups (clinically no pancreatic fistula (cNo-PF), grade B, and grade C) according to the ISGPF classification. MDCT images were retrospectively evaluated by two radiologists in consensus for the presence of pancreaticojejunostomy (PJ) dehiscence, PJ dehiscence diameter, PJ defect, acute necrotic collection (ANC), peripancreatic fluid collection, and imaging findings of complications. Categorical MDCT findings were compared among the three groups using Pearson’s chi-square test, and PJ dehiscence diameter was compared using the Kruskal–Wallis test. The series connected battery cells are mainly used in high voltage battery pack application. However parameter inequality of each battery cell makes battery voltage imbalance problem. In this paper, a new balancing circuit utilizing converter scheme for the series connected battery cells is proposed. Proposed circuit offers easy control and fast equalization time. Moreover the circuit can be used in a practical application because it has high modularity and can operate during the charging/discharging cycle. To show its superiorness and effectiveness, the principle of proposed circuit is explained with computer simulation and experiment is carried out using lithium-ion battery.

Three kinds of lanthanum oxides (La2O3) were synthesized from different methods and used as a catalyst in the transesterification of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) with glycerol for the synthesis of glycerol carbonate (GLC). Lanthanum oxide synthesized using a surfactant (S-La) showed a much higher GLC yield of 89.9% compared to other lanthanum oxides synthesized by calcination (C-La) and precipitation (P-La) at the reaction conditions of 90 °C, DMC/glycerol = 2, and catalyst/glycerol = 5 wt %. The best catalyst was obtained when the surfactant/La weight ratio was 12. XRD study revealed that S-La has large amount of monoclinic and hexagonal La2O2CO3 phases, which are assumed as active sites of the catalyst for the reaction.

Radiologists can narrow the list of differential diagnoses for splenic lesions by understanding characteristic imaging findings, including the nature and degree of lesion contrast enhancement

Objectives Toad venom, called Chan-Su, is a traditional Oriental medicine secreted from the auricular and the skin glands of the Bufo bufo gargarizanz Cantor or B. melanosticus Schneider and has been widely used in China, Korea and other parts of Asia for the treatment of pain, heart conditions, and cancer. We examined the concentrations of the main chemical constituents within a commerciallyavailable toad venom product and compared the levels for different extraction methods. Methods Toad venom was extracted using either cold or hot water, ethanol (EtOH), methanol (MeOH), or ethyl acetate (EtOAc), was fractionated using precipitation or reflux, and was then analyzed using thin layer chromatography (TLC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HTLC), and liquid chroma-tography - mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Individual components were identified by comparisons of the retention times, the ultraviolet spectra, and mass spectras and differences in chemical constituents for different solvents and extraction methods are presented. Results Components with authentic standards, including serotonin and bufodienolides (cinobufagen, bufalin, cinobufalin, and resibufogenin), were detected. The water extract of toad venom contained the greatest amount of serotonin (75.7 ± 0.1 mg/g), but very small amounts of bufodienolides (3.8 ± 0.0 mg/g). In contrast, the use of MeOH or EtOH extraction solutions resulted in 5-26 times higher concentrations of bufodienolides, with only trace amounts of serotonin. The relative and the absolute concentrations of the component also varied based on the extraction method; i.e., EtOH extracts yielded the greatest total amounts of bufodienolides, and EtOAc precipitation had the lowest amounts of bufodienolides. Conclusions Toad venom consists of serotonin and several bufodienolides, and the choice of solvent to extract chemical the constituents is important as a way to enrich the purported active components for treating different conditions.

This study was carried out to define the optimum drying conditions for Lycium chinense Miller as a useful healthy food, because recently the cultivation area and yield of this fruit are increased. The experiments of two varieties were performed at the temperature of , , and . The drying ratio was the slowest and quality was the best at the drying temperature of . The drying temperature was higher, drying ratio was more faster and the quality became worse. The difference of drying ratios between the varieties was insignificant. The energy consumption per hour was the minimum at the drying temperature of , but the total energy consumption was the maximum for the long drying time. Also, the energy consumption at the drying temperature , and was not very different from others. Considering the drying ratio, quality and energy consumption, the drying time of 36 hours at the drying temperature of was the most optimum condition.

The latent heat of vaporization in rough rice, brown rice, white rice and rice hull was calculated by Clausius-Clapeyron equation, which does not require complex constraints as in Othmer method. Equilibrium relative humidity and ratio of the latent heat of vaporization with ln and ln were estimated with moisture contents ranging from 10% (d.b.) to 36% (d.b.) with 2% (d.b.) increment and temperatures ranging from to with increment. An empirical equation for calculating the latent heat of vaporization in rice was developed as a function of moisture content and temperature. The equation agreed well with the calculated results. The ratio for latent heat of vaporization were the greatest for white rice while they were similar among rough rice, brown rice and rice hull.
