1. Polygenic risk scores for mood disorders predict future strokes in women: a Mendelian randomization study

Abstract: Objectives Mood disorders and strokes are often comorbid, and their health toll worldwide is huge. This study characterizes prognostic and etiological roles of mood disorders in stroke. Methods We tested if genetic susceptibilities for mood disorders could predict future strokes using the Malmö Diet and Cancer cohort (24 631 individuals). Additionally, Mendelian randomization was employed to further examine the causality using summary statistics from large genome wide association studies (mood disorders: up to 287,932 individuals; strokes: up to 446,696 individuals). Results Among 24,366 stroke-free participants at baseline, 2,632 individuals developed strokes, 2,172 of them ischemic, during a follow-up of up to 25 years. After all adjustments, participants in the highest quintile (5th quintile) of polygenic risk scores (PRS) for mood disorders had 1.46x (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.22–1.74) higher risk of strokes and 1.45x (95% CI: 1.19–1.77) higher risk of ischemic strokes compared to the lowest quintile (1st quintile) of PRS in women. Univariable and multivariable Mendelian randomization analyses showed that mood disorders had causal effect on smoking (odds ratio (OR) = 1.19, 95% CI: 1.07–1.31), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D, OR=1.22, 95% CI: 1.04–1.43) and women's body mass index (BMI, coefficient = 0.11, 95% CI: 0.01–0.21), whereas causal effects for smoking, T2D and BMI on stroke/ischemic stroke were consistently observed. Conclusion Our results suggest that mood disorders can cause stroke through smoking, T2D and BMI. Using PRS, women, who benefit from prevention and treatment of smoking, T2D and BMI, could possibly be early identified to prevent mood disorders and strokes. 2. Circulating CD31 reflects endothelial activity and is associated with a lower risk for cardiovascular complications

Abstract: Background CD31 is a membrane receptor expressed by leucocytes, platelets and endothelial cells. CD31 regulates endothelial leukocyte transmigration and is key in maintaining endothelial homeostasis. An increased endothelial activation is suggested to contribute to atherosclerotic plaque inflammation but studies focusing on CD31 in atherosclerosis have provided evidence for both pro- and anti-atherosclerotic effects. However, which biological processes that are reflected by circulating soluble CD31 (sCD31) in human atherosclerosis remain unknown. Purpose Here, we aimed to explore 1) which biological processes circulating sCD31 reflects in the human atherosclerotic plaque and circulation 2) if sCD31 levels predicts cardiovascular death in individuals with carotid atherosclerosis and 3) if circulating sCD31 is causally associated to coronary artery disease (CAD) and ischemic stroke, in order to investigate its role as a biomarker of atherosclerotic disease and complications. Methods Cardiovascular associated plasma proteins (n=543) and carotid plaque proteins (n=197) were assessed by a proximity extension assay (Olink, SciLife) in the Carotid Plaque Imaging Project biobank. Plaques were phenotyped by immunohistochemistry. CD31 was located by immunofluorescence. Human carotid artery endothelial cells (HCtAECs) were stimulated with IL-6 and TNF-α to assess sCD31 release. National registries were used to identify cardiovascular death during follow up. All patients gave written informed consent. The study was approved by the local ethical review board and followed the declaration of Helsinki. Causal effects for sCD31 on stroke and CAD were examined by Mendelian randomization (MR). Summary statistics for GWAS of circulating CD31, coronary artery disease and stroke were retrieved from the SCALLOP study, the CARDIoGRAMplusC4D and the MEGASTROKE consortia. Results Plasma sCD31 correlated to plaque sCD31, TNF-α, MMP-2, MMP-9 levels and CD68+ plaque area. Plasma sCD31 also correlated to plasma CSF-1, MCP-1 and IL-8 levels. Clustering and enrichment analyses revealed that plasma sCD31 was associated to angiogenesis, cell migration and inflammatory responses. CD31 was pre-dominantly expressed on the plaque endothelium. TNF-α and IL-6 induced HCtAECs sCD31 release in vitro. Furthermore, low levels of circulating sCD31 predicted cardiovascular death and our MR analyses suggested that low circulating sCD31 levels were causally associated with a higher risk of stroke and CAD. Conclusions The present study shows that circulating sCD31 is released from endothelial cells due to inflammatory stimuli and reflects plaque inflammation. However, our follow-up data and MR analyses suggest that circulating sCD31 is associated with a lower risk for cardiovascular complications. This indicates that circulating sCD31 is not only a marker of an inflammatory response but also a marker of a functional endothelium, able to maintain the endothelial homeostasis. Abstract: Background Dynamic left ventricular outflow obstruction (LVOTO) during exercise stress echocardiography (ESE) is recommended in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) to identify the obstructive phenotype. Aim To assess left ventricular outflow gradient (LVOTG) during ESE in different conditions. Methods In a single-group, prospective, observational study, we performed peak and/or post-treadmill ESE with systematic assessment of LVOTG in the orthostatic position by continuous-wave Doppler in 1333 subjects (837 males, mean age 38,2±20 ranging from 6 to 87 years) recruited over a period of twenty years, from 2001 to 2021. Peak LVOTG ≥30 mm Hg was considered abnormal for LVOTO during ESE. We enrolled 7 different populations: asymptomatic healthy controls (n=35); HCM (n=81); genotype-positive, phenotype negative asymptomatic HCM (n=6); patients with chest pain symptoms, suspected myocardial ischemia and either normal coronary arteries (INOCA, n=131,or with very low pre-test probability of coronary artery disease (probable INOCA, n=416) and; fatigue and suspected heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF, n=206); amateur athletes with ischemia-like ECG changes during exercise-test or symptoms such as near syncope or chest pain or dizziness (n=457); aborted sudden death and with negative screening (n=1). Results Technical success rate of LVOTG assessment was 1333/1333 at rest and at peak stress (feasibility 100%). Imaging and analysis time were Conclusion LVOTO in orthostatic position is detectable during treadmill ESE in several cardiovascular conditions associated with symptoms such as dyspnea, chest pain or near syncope, and even in asymptomatic patients with genotype-positive, phenotype-negative HCM. The identification of the obstructive phenotype is easy to capture during ESE without any significant additional imaging and analysis burden and can be important also outside HCM. 5. Elevated soluble lectin-like oxidised low-density lipoprotein receptor-1 (sLOX-1) associated with increased risk for heart failure and MACE after an acute coronary event

Abstract: Background/Introduction The lectin-like oxidised low-density lipoprotein receptor (LOX-1) is involved in atherosclerotic plaque inflammation and vulnerability. Plasma levels of soluble LOX-1 (sLOX-1) have previously been associated with increased risk for recurrent coronary events and mortality in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Purpose To assess the association of sLOX-1 with the development of heart failure (HF) post-ACS. Methods We measured sLOX-1 in 524 patients with ACS within 24 hours after the acute event. A subgroup of 97 of these patients completed a follow-up echocardiogram after one year. The incidence of HF-related hospitalisation and recurrent major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), defined as recurrent ACS or cardiovascular death, was followed for a mean period of two years. In a separate cohort of 363 patients with ACS and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), we studied the correlations between sLOX-1, coronary flow reserve, left ventricular systolic function and systemic inflammation at two follow-up visits within four weeks and 16 weeks post-ACS, respectively. Results Baseline sLOX-1 was positively associated with the risk of HF and MACE, independently of traditional cardiovascular risk factors, revascularisation and medication. The hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals were 1.57 (1.10–2.23), p=0.012 for HF and 1.36 (1.08–1.71), p=0.009 for MACE per standard deviation baseline sLOX-1 increase. Elevated sLOX-1 was also negatively associated with lower-left ventricular ejection fraction at one year (r=−0.263, p=0.009). In the second ACS cohort, we found that plasma sLOX-1 measured at the two follow-up visits was negatively associated with coronary flow reserve and left ventricular systolic function, and positively correlated with biomarkers of systemic inflammation and cardiac overload. Conclusion Elevated sLOX-1 is associated with the development of HF and recurrent cardiovascular events in patients with ACS. Although this association study cannot confirm causality, the results suggest LOX-1 as a potential biomarker and treatment target in patients with ACS. Abstract: International audience; We describe the performances of a novel Doppler imager, aimed to detect acoustic oscillations and atmospheric dynamics at the surface of giant planets of the Solar System in the frame of the JOVIAL (Jovian Oscillations detection by Velocity Imaging At several Longitudes) project. The first JOVIAL instrument was installed on the 188cm telescope at Okayama branch of National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) in April 2019. This instrument is a part of a ground based network of three identical instruments installed on telescopes around the world for continuous observations. First observations of Jupiter with the JOVIAL instrument were achieved in June 2019. We describe the instrument principle, its design and the set-up at Okayama observatory, as well as the performances reached during the first observing run. We finally provide plans for future observations with the network.

Abstract: Time, like space, is a fundamental dimension of the environment, critical for much of brain function. Yet, its neural bases are poorly understood. One prominent hypothesis posits that time is implicit in the state of neuronal population activity as it evolves along reproducible trajectories in the space of possible firing patterns. We tested this hypothesis in the striatum, an input area of the basal ganglia known to contain neural activity whose time-course correlates with behavioral measures of timing. Using a custom thermoelectric implant capable of closed-loop control of temperature in striatal tissue, we measured the impact of temperature increases and decreases on both optogenetically induced striatal population activity and the behavior of rats performing a temporal judgment task. Cooler temperatures caused dilation, and warmer temperatures contraction, of both neural activity and the pattern of judgments in time. In contrast, temperature did not affect low level timing of movements. These data demonstrate that the time-course of evolving striatal population activity dictates the speed of a latent timing process that is used to guide decision-making but that is not used to specify the details of movement execution, with broad implications for understanding both the neural basis of timing and, more generally, the role of basal ganglia circuits in behavior.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE The aim was to investigate the value of optimized 3-dimensional alternating repetition time balanced steady-state free precession (ATR-SSFP), as an alternative to conventional segmented balanced steady-state free precession (bSSFP) with fat suppression prepulse (FS-bSSFP), in single breath-hold abdominal magnetic resonance imaging at 3 T. METHODS Bloch simulations were performed to determine the optimal flip angle (FA = 1-90 degrees) and τ (1-3) with respect to signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) between abdominal organs for ATR-SSFP. These were corroborated by phantom measurements for different T1/T2 values (5-47) as well as in a healthy volunteer. In addition, fat suppression efficiency was studied using phantom and volunteer measurements. The effect of resolution on image quality was studied in a healthy volunteer. Using the optimal settings, ATR-SSFP images as well as FS-bSSFP images were obtained in 15 pancreatic cancer patients. For 10 structures of interest, the signal ratio with respect to the pancreas was computed and compared between both sequences. Finally, 10 items on image quality (fat suppression, artifacts, and sharpness) and tissue conspicuity (ducts, vessels, and duodenum) were scored by 2 abdominal radiologists for both image sequences. RESULTS The results of simulations, phantom measurements, and volunteer measurements showed that, considering scan time, fat suppression, and clinical relevance, the ideal settings for ATR-SSFP were as follows: τ = 3; TR1 = 3.46 milliseconds; radiofrequency phase cycling 0, 180, 180, 0 degrees; and FA = 13-16 degrees (highest SNR) and 24-26 degrees (highest CNR). The optimized feasible additional settings implemented for patient scans were FA = 18 degrees and resolution = 1.4 × 1.4 × 1.4 mm. In patients, the signal ratios of both ATR-SSFP and FS-bSSFP were comparable and had a T2-like contrast behavior, although more accentuated in ATR-SSFP. The ATR-SSFP scored significantly higher than FS-bSSFP for 9 of 10 items scored. CONCLUSIONS For single breath-hold abdominal imaging at 3 T, ATR-SSFP performs best with τ = 3 and an FA between 13 degrees (highest SNR) and 26 degrees (highest CNR). The scoring of both abdominal radiologists indicated that, at τ = 3, FA = 18 degrees, and 1.4 × 1.4 × 1.4 mm resolution, ATR-SSFP was preferred over conventional FS-bSSFP with similar settings.

Abstract: International audience; ASTEP 400, the main instrument of the ASTEP (Antarctica Search for Transiting ExoPlanets) programme, is a 40 cm telescope, designed to withstand the harsh conditions in Antarctica, achieving a photometric accuracy of a fraction of millimagnitude on hourly time-scales for planet-hosting southern bright (R = 12 mag) stars. We review the performances of this instrument, describe its operating conditions, and present results from the analysis of observations obtained during its first three years (2010-2012) of operation, before its repatriation in 2014. During this time, we observed a total of 22 stellar fields (1A degrees x 1A degrees field of view). Each field, in which we measured stars up to magnitude R = 18 mag, was observed continuously during =7 to =30 d. More than 200 000 frames were recorded and 310 000 stars processed, using an implementation of the optimal image subtraction photometry algorithm. We found 43 planetary transit candidates. 20 of these candidates were observed using spectroscopic follow-ups including four targets classified as good planet candidates. Our results demonstrate that accurate near-continuous photometric observations are achievable from the Concordia station at Dome C in Antarctica, even if we were not able to reach the nominal photometric precision of the instrument. We conducted a correlation analysis between the rms noise and a large number of external parameters and found that source of the =1 mmag correlated noise is not obvious and does not depend on a single parameter. However, our analysis provided some hints and guidance to increase the photometric accuracy of the instrument. These improvements should equip any future telescope operating in Antarctica.

Abstract: The CERN Neutron Time-Of-Flight (n-TOF) facility is well suited to measure small neutron-induced fission cross sections, as those of subactinides. The cross section ratios of {sup nat}Pb and {sup 209}Bi relative to {sup 235}U and {sup 238}U were measured using PPAC detectors. The fragment coincidence method allows to unambiguously identify the fission events. The present experiment provides the first results for neutron-induced fission up to 1 GeV for {sup nat}Pb and {sup 209}Bi. A good agreement with previous experimental data below 200 MeV is shown. The comparison with proton-induced fission indicates that the limiting regime where neutron-induced and proton-induced fission reach equal cross section is close to 1 GeV.

Abstract: Introduction Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is a blood and bone marrow cancer originating from self-renewing malignant immature myeloid cells. AML cells are capable of escaping host immune surveillance. One of the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon is the ability of AML cells to secrete galectin-9, a tandem protein, which induces variety of intracellular and cell-to-cell signalling events leading to inactivation of NK cells as well as killing of cytotoxic T cells. Exocytosis of galectin-9 is mediated by the G protein-coupled receptor latrophilin 1 (LPHN1). However, molecular mechanisms underlying its expression and functional control remain unknown, and thus became the main goal of our work. Material and methods We used THP-1 and primary human AML cells, primary leukocytes obtained from healthy donors. Western blot analysis, ELISA and quantitative Real-Time PCR served as main instrumental in experimental set-ups. Results and discussions We discovered that cortisol induces LPHN1 expression on transcriptional level thus also upregulating its translation in AML cells, but not in primary healthy human leukocytes. We found that secreted form of fibronectin and leucine-rich transmembrane protein 3 (FLRT3, an endogenous LPHN1 ligand) is present in blood plasma of healthy donors and AML patients in equally high amounts. Therefore, LPHN1 expressed by human AML cells is not lacking its ligand and thus triggers galectin-9 secretion on permanent basis in order to provide continuous protection against host immune surveillance. Conclusion Our results demonstrate a fundamentally novel survival mechanism employed by human AML cells. They use a crucial human hormone (cortisol) to express receptor (LPHN1), which uses blood plasma protein (FLRT3) to escape immune surveillance. Thus AML cells employ normal physiological systems of the human body to support their survival and attenuate anti-cancer activity of cytotoxic lymphoid cells.

This contribution gives an overview on the astrophysical program made at n_TOF facility, the results and the implications will be considered.

Abstract: The beta-decay of Re-187 (t(1/2) = 42.3 Gyr) represents a suited cosmo-chronometer for the age of the r-process abundances, since the radiogenic part of the daughter isotope (OS)-O-187 is defined by the difference between the solar Os-187 abundance and s-process contribution to Os-187. The latter component can be determined via the s-process systematics based on the stellar neutron capture cross sections of Os-186 and Os-187. The laboratory cross section of Os-187 requires a significant correction for the effect of the low-lying excited state at 9.75 keV, which is strongly populated under stellar conditions. This theoretical correction can be improved by an experimental cross section for inelastic scattering to the 9.75 keV state. High resolution time-of-flight measurements of (n, gamma) cross sections of (OS)-O-186,187,188 from I eV to I MeV at CERN n-TOF facility are reported. The inferred stellar cross sections differ from previously recommended values. In addition, the inelastic scattering cross section has been measured at 30 keV neutron energy via time-of-flight at the Karlsruhe 3.7 MV Van de Graaff. Abstract: The precise determination of the neutron capture cross sections of Os186 and Os187 is important to define the s-process abundance of Os187 at the formation of the solar system. This quantity can be used to evaluate the radiogenic component of the abundance of Os187 due to the decay of the unstable Re187 (t1/2=41.2 Gyr) and from this to infer the time duration of the nucleosynthesis in our galaxy (Re/Os cosmochronometer). The neutron capture cross sections of Os186, Os187, and Os188 have been measured at the CERN n-TOF facility from 1 eV to 1 MeV, covering the entire energy range of astrophysical interest. The measurement has been performed by time-of-flight technique using isotopically enriched samples and two C6D6 scintillation detectors for recording the prompt γ rays emitted in the capture events. Maxwellian averaged capture cross sections have been determined for thermal energies between kT=5 and 100 keV corresponding to all possible s-process scenarios. The estimated uncertainties for the values at 30 keV are 4.1, 3.3, and 4.7% for Os186, Os187, and Os188, respectively. © 2010 The American Physical Society

Abstract: Neutron resonance analyses have been performed for the capture cross sections of 186Os, 187Os, and 188Os measured at the n_TOF facility at cern. Resonance parameters have been extracted up to 5, 3, and 8 keV, respectively, using the sammy code for a full R-matrix fit of the capture yields. From these results average resonance parameters were derived by a statistical analysis to provide a comprehensive experimental basis for modeling of the stellar neutron capture rates of these isotopes in terms of the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model. Consistent calculations for the capture and inelastic reaction channels are crucial for the evaluation of stellar enhancement factors to correct the Maxwellian averaged cross sections obtained from experimental data for the effect of thermally populated excited states. These factors have been calculated for the full temperature range of current scenarios of s-process nucleosynthesis using the combined information of the experimental data in the region of resolved resonances and in the continuum. The consequences of this analysis for the s-process component of the 187Os abundance and the related impact on the evaluation of the time duration of galactic nucleosynthesis via the Re/Os cosmochronometer are discussed.

20. E-tool for mental health coping: usability and effectiveness study of a biofeedback approach on a digitized diaphragmatic breathing strategy

Abstract: Introduction One of the most common somatic responses of the human body to a mental health issue consists of alterations of the breathing rate. Typically, when an individual is under stress, tends to have a more rapid shallow breathing - instead of resorting to the diaphragm to help the air in and out the lungs, ends up conducting a thoracic breathing, leading to extended fatigue or dizziness. Objectives The aim of this project is to assess the accuracy and efficacy of measuring the breathing rate through abdominal breathing movements, via the smartphone’s sensors, and applying it to personalize a digitized diaphragmatic breathing strategy. The main hypothesis under testing is that the digitization of this strategy with the personalization to the subject’s own response is efficient as a valuable tool for mental health coping. Methods A tool was developed and integrated with a mobile app that aggregates mental health coping strategies, based on the digitalization of positive psychology techniques. The tool included the diaphragmatic breathing exercise and the personalization to the user through biofeedback. Such biofeedback was based on the user’s abdominal movements and directly impacted the course of the strategy. The tool is under testing, counting so far with 25 subjects resident in Portugal. Results The usability and effectiveness metrics of the solution will be assessed on the first contact of the subject with the app, and segmented by different subject profiles. Mental health metrics will also be assessed, namely anxiety levels - using the smartphone sensors and standard psychiatric scales. The results will be compared with a control group, in which the subjects will only perform the self-assessment, without using the breathing exercise. Abstract: The neutron-induced fission cross section of U234 has been measured at the CERN n-TOF facility relative to the standard fission cross section of U235 from 20 keV to 1.4 MeV and of U238 from 1.4 to 200 MeV. A fast ionization chamber (FIC) was used as a fission fragment detector with a detection efficiency of no less than 97%. The high instantaneous flux and the low background characterizing the n-TOF facility resulted in wide-energy-range data (0.02 to 200 MeV), with high energy resolution, high statistics, and systematic uncertainties bellow 3%. Previous investigations around the energy of the fission threshold revealed structures attributed to β-vibrational levels, which have been confirmed by the present measurements. Theoretical calculations have been performed, employing the talys code with model parameters tuned to fairly reproduce the experimental data. © 2014 American Physical Society.

Abstract: The neutron-induced fission cross section of U234 has been measured at the CERN n_TOF facility relative to the standard fission cross section of U235 from 20 keV to 1.4 MeV and of U238 from 1.4 to 200 MeV. A fast ionization chamber (FIC) was used as a fission fragment detector with a detection efficiency of no less than 97%. The high instantaneous flux and the low background characterizing the n_TOF facility resulted in wide-energy-range data (0.02 to 200 MeV), with high energy resolution, high statistics, and systematic uncertainties bellow 3%. Previous investigations around the energy of the fission threshold revealed structures attributed to β-vibrational levels, which have been confirmed by the present measurements. Theoretical calculations have been performed, employing the talys code with model parameters tuned to fairly reproduce the experimental data.

Abstract: Background: The design of new nuclear reactors and transmutation devices requires to reduce the present neutron cross section uncertainties of minor actinides. Purpose: Improvement of the Am243(n,γ) cross section uncertainty. Method: The Am243(n,γ) cross section has been measured at the n-TOF facility at CERN with a BaF2 total absorption calorimeter, in the energy range between 0.7 eV and 2.5 keV. Results: The Am243(n,γ) cross section has been successfully measured in the mentioned energy range. The resolved resonance region has been extended from 250 eV up to 400 eV. In the unresolved resonance region our results are compatible with one of the two incompatible capture data sets available below 2.5 keV. The data available in EXFOR and in the literature have been used to perform a simple analysis above 2.5 keV. Conclusions: The results of this measurement contribute to reduce the Am243(n,γ) cross section uncertainty and suggest that this cross section is underestimated up to 25% in the neutron energy range between 50 eV and a few keV in the present evaluated data libraries. Abstract: See paper for full list of authors; International audience; The (n, α) reaction in the radioactive 59Ni is of relevance in nuclear astrophysics as 59Ni can be considered as the first branching point in the astrophysical s-process. Its relevance in nuclear technology is especially related to material embrittlement in stainless steel. However, there is a discrepancy between available experimental data and the evaluated nuclear data files for this reaction. At the n_TOF facility at CERN, a dedicated system based on sCVD diamond diodes was set up to measure the 59Ni(n, α)56Fe cross section. The results of this measurement, with special emphasis on the dominant resonance at 203 eV, are presented here.

Abstract: Observing sites at the East-Antarctic plateau are considered to provide exceptional conditions for astronomy. The aim of this work is to assess its potential for detecting transiting extrasolar planets through a comparison and combination of photometric data from Antarctica with time series from a midlatitude site. During 2010, the two small aperture telescopes ASTEP 400 (Dome C) and BEST II (Chile) together performed an observing campaign of two target fields and the transiting planet WASP-18b. For the latter, a bright star, Dome C appears to yield an advantageous signal-to-noise ratio. For field surveys, both Dome C and Chile appear to be of comparable photometric quality. However, within two weeks, observations at Dome C yield a transit detection efficiency that typically requires a whole observing season in Chile. For the first time, data from Antarctica and Chile have been combined to extent the observational duty cycle. This approach is both feasible in practice and favorable for transit search, as it increases the detection yield by 12-18%., 22 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in PASP (in press)

Abstract: The neutron time-of-flight facility n TOF features a white neutron source produced by spallation through 20 GeV/c protons impinging on a lead target. The facility, aiming primarily at the measurement of neutron-induced reaction cross sections, was operating at CERN between 2001 and 2004, and then underwent a major upgrade in 2008. This paper presents in detail all the characteristics of the new neutron beam in the currently available configurations, which correspond to two different collimation systems and two choices of neutron moderator. The characteristics discussed include the intensity and energy dependence of the neutron flux, the spatial profile of the beam, the in-beam background components and the energy resolution/broadening. The discussion of these features is based on dedicated measurements and Monte Carlo simulations, and includes estimations of the systematic uncertainties of the mentioned quantities.

Abstract: At the n\_TOF experiment at CERN a dedicated single-crystal chemical vapor deposition (sCVD) Diamond Mosaic-Detector has been developed for (n,$\alpha$) cross-section measurements. The detector, characterized by an excellent time and energy resolution, consists of an array of 9 sCVD diamond diodes. The detector has been characterized and a cross-section measurement has been performed for the $^{59}$Ni(n,$\alpha$)$^{56}$Fe reaction in 2012. Abstract: The Neutron Measurements Laboratory at the Nuclear Engineering Department of the Polytechnic University of Madrid consists of a bunker-like room and was built for neutron dosimetry research purposes and measurements. The facility includes a 74-GBq 241 Am–Be neutron source placed inside a neutron Howitzer container. The source can be moved to the irradiation or to the storage position. In this work, a Bonner sphere spectrometer (BSS) was used to measure the neutron fluence spectra with the source in both positions. Ambient dose equivalent rates, *(10), were measured using a calibrated neutron area monitor LB6411 (Berthold). The measured count rates were used as input to the NSDann and NSDUAZ unfolding programs to obtain the neutron fluence spectra and *(10). Monte Carlo (MC) simulation methods were used to model the system and to calculate the neutron fluence rate and the ambient dose equivalent rate at the measurement points. The comparison between NSDUAZ and NSDann resulted in relative deviations up to 6.87 % in the total neutron fluence rate and 7.18 % in *(10) values, despite the differences in the shape of the spectra obtained for the irradiation position. Comparing with the measured values, the *(10) values obtained with the unfolding programs exhibit a maximum relative deviation of 12.19 %. Taking into account the associated uncertainties, MC simulations seem to be in reasonable agreement with measurements. A maximum relative deviation of 15.65 % between computed and measured *(10) values was obtained. The computed count rates were applied to the unfolding programs to calculate the total neutron fluence rate and a maximum deviation of 12.83 % was obtained between the original values calculated by NSDann. A sensitivity test showed that the NSDann unfolding program is very sensitive to the uncertainties of the BSS count rates.

Abstract: We have measured the neutron capture cross sections of the stable magnesium isotopes 24,25,26Mg in the energy range of interest to the s process using the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN. Capture events from a natural metal sample and from samples enriched in 25Mg and 26Mg were recorded using the total energy method based on C6 2H6 detectors. Neutron resonance parameters were extracted by a simultaneous resonance shape analysis of the present capture data and existing transmission data on a natural isotopic sample. Maxwellian-averaged capture cross sections for the three isotopes were calculated up to thermal energies of 100 keV and their impact on s-process analyses was investigated. At 30 keV the new values of the stellar cross section for 24Mg, 25Mg, and 26Mg are 3.8±0.2 mb, 4.1±0.6 mb, and 0.14±0.01 mb, respectively.

Abstract: The neutron-induced fission cross section of 245Cm was measured at n-TOF in a wide energy range and with high resolution. The energy dependence, measured in a single measurement from 30 meV to 1 MeV neutron energy, has been determined with 5% accuracy relative to the 235U(n,f) cross section. In order to reduce the uncertainty on the absolute value, the data have been normalized at thermal energy to recent measurements performed at ILL and BR1. In the energy range of overlap, the results are in fair agreement with some previous measurements and confirm, on average, the evaluated cross section in the ENDF/B-VII.0 database, although sizable differences are observed for some important resonances below 20 eV. A similar behavior is observed relative to JENDL/AC-2008, a reactor-oriented database for actinides. The new results contribute to the overall improvement of the databases needed for the design of advanced reactor systems and may lead to refinements of fission models for the actinides. Abstract: The neutron capture cross section of 237Np was measured between 0.7 and 500 eV at the CERN n-TOF facility using the 4π BaF2 Total Absorption Calorimeter. The experimental capture yield was extracted minimizing all the systematic uncertainties and was analyzed together with the most reliable transmission data available using the sammy code. The result is a complete set of individual as well as average resonance parameters [D0=0.56(2) eV, Γγ=40.9(18) meV, 104S0=0.98(6), R ′=9.8(6) fm]. The capture cross section obtained in this work is in overall agreement with the evaluations and the data of Weston and Todd, thus showing sizable differences with respect to previous data from Scherbakov and large discrepancies with data Kobayashi. The results indicate that a new evaluation combining the present capture data with reliable transmission data would allow reaching an accuracy better than 4%, in line with the uncertainty requirements of the nuclear data community for the design and operation of current and future nuclear devices. Abstract: The neutron-induced fission cross section of {sup 236}U was measured at the neutron Time-of-Flight (n-TOF) facility at CERN relative to the standard {sup 235}U(n,f) cross section for neutron energies ranging from above thermal to several MeV. The measurement, covering the full range simultaneously, was performed with a fast ionization chamber, taking advantage of the high resolution of the n-TOF spectrometer. The n-TOF results confirm that the first resonance at 5.45 eV is largely overestimated in some nuclear data libraries. The resonance triplet around 1.2 keV was measured with high resolution and resonance parameters were determined with good accuracy. Resonances at high energy have also been observed and characterized and different values for the cross section are provided for the region between 10 keV and the fission threshold. The present work indicates various shortcomings of the current nuclear data libraries in the subthreshold region and provides the basis for an accurate re-evaluation of the {sup 236}U(n,f) cross section, which is of great relevance for the development of emerging or innovative nuclear reactor technologies.

Abstract: The successful development of advanced nuclear systems for sustainable energy production and nuclear waste management depends on high quality nuclear data libraries. Recent sensitivity stud- ies and reports [1-3] have identi ed the need for substantially improving the accuracy of neutron cross-section data for minor actinides. The n TOF collaboration has initiated an ambitious exper- imental program for the measurement of neutron capture cross sections of minor actinides. Two experimental setups have been constructed for this purpose: a Total Absorption Calorimeter (TAC) [4] for measuring neutron capture cross-sections of low-mass and/or radioactive samples and a set of two low neutron sensitivity C6D6 detectors for the less radioactive materials.

Abstract: Neutron-induced fission cross sections for {sup nat}Pb and {sup 209}Bi were measured with a white-spectrum neutron source at the CERN Neutron Time-of-Flight (n{sub T}OF) facility. The experiment, using neutrons from threshold up to 1 GeV, provides the first results for these nuclei above 200 MeV. The cross sections were measured relative to {sup 235}U and {sup 238}U in a dedicated fission chamber with parallel plate avalanche counter detectors. Results are compared with previous experimental data. Upgraded parametrizations of the cross sections are presented, from threshold energy up to 1 GeV. The proposed new sets of fitting parameters improve former results along the whole energy range.

Abstract: The cross section of the reaction {sup 197}Au(n,{gamma}) was measured with the time-of-flight technique at the n{_}TOF (neutron time-of-flight) facility in the unresolved resonance region between 5 and 400 keV using a pair of C{sub 6}D{sub 6} (where D denotes {sup 2}H) liquid scintillators for the detection of prompt capture {gamma} rays. The results with a total uncertainty of 3.9%-6.7% for a resolution of 20 bins per energy decade show fair agreement with the Evaluated Nuclear Data File Version B-VII.0 (ENDF/B-VII.0), which contains the standard evaluation. The Maxwellian-averaged cross section (MACS) at 30 keV is in excellent agreement with the one according to the ENDF/B-VII.0 evaluation and 4.7% higher than the MACS measured independently by activation technique. Structures in the cross section, which had also been reported earlier, have been interpreted as being due to clusters of resonances.

Abstract: The neutron-induced fission cross-section of 233U has been measured at the CERN n_TOF facility relative to the standard fission cross-section of 235U between 0.5 and 20MeV. The experiment was performed with a fast ionization chamber for the detection of the fission fragments and to discriminate against α -particles from the natural radioactivity of the samples. The high instantaneous flux and the low background of the n_TOF facility result in data with uncertainties of ≈ 3% , which were found in good agreement with previous experiments. The high quality of the present results allows to improve the evaluation of the 233U (n,f) cross-section and, consequently, the design of energy systems based on the Th/U cycle.

Abstract: A high-resolution measurement of the neutron-induced fission cross section of 234U and 237Np has been performed at the CERN Neutron Time-of-Flight facility. The cross sections have been determined in a wide energy range from 1 eV to 1 GeV using the evaluated 235U cross section as reference. In these measurements the energy determination for the 234U resonances could be improved, whereas previous discrepancies for the 237Np resonances were confirmed. New cross-section data are provided for high neutron energies that go beyond the limits of prior evaluations, obtaining important differences in the case of 237Np.

Abstract: Because the relatively small neutron capture cross sections of the zirconium isotopes are difficult to measure, the results of previous measurements are often not adequate for a number of problems in astrophysics and nuclear technology. Therefore, the Zr-92(n,gamma) cross section has been remeasured at the CERN n_TOF facility, providing a set of improved parameters for 44 resonances in the neutron energy range up to 40 keV. With this information the cross-section uncertainties in the keV region could be reduced to 5% as required for s-process nucleosynthesis studies and technological applications.

Abstract: The (n,γ) cross section of Au197 has been measured at n-TOF in the resolved resonance region, up to 5keV, with the aim of improving the accuracy in an energy range where it is not yet considered standard. The measurements were performed with two different experimental setup and detection techniques, the total energy method based on C6D6 detectors, and the total absorption calorimetry based on a 4π BaF2 array. By comparing the data collected with the two techniques, two accurate sets of neutron-capture yields have been obtained, which could be the basis for a new evaluation leading to an extended cross-section standard. Overall good agreement is found between the n-TOF results and evaluated cross sections, with some significant exceptions for small resonances. A few resonances not included in the existing databases have also been observed. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

44. MRI of the Gastrointestinal Tract at High-Field Strength

Abstract: High-field imaging of the GI tract at 3 T can be very attractive in terms of signal to noise ratio (SNR) when compared with 1.5 T imaging. However, several issues need to be addressed and a direct transition of sequences used at 1.5–3 T is not possible. The main constraints in 3 T imaging are related to changes in tissue T1 and T2 relaxation parameters, susceptibility artifacts, changes in efficiency of contrast agents, chemical shift artifacts, B1-inhomogeneity artifacts, specific absorption rate (SAR) limitations, and steady-state free precession (SSFP) banding artifacts. In general, a careful adjustment of sequence parameters is needed to avoid these artifacts. The use of parallel imaging techniques is more beneficial at 3 T when compared with 1.5 T because by reducing scan time SAR problems often present at 3 T can be avoided. For reducing B1-inhomogeneity, hardware adjustments are needed. Banding artifacts generated in SSFP-sequences pose a severe limitation to the clinical use of these sequences. Though methods exist to overcome this problem, a satisfactory solution has not been proposed so far.

Abstract: The neutron time of flight (n_TOF) facility at CERN is a spallation neutron source with white neutron energy spectrum (from thermal to several GeV), covering the full energy range of interest for nuclear astrophysics, in particular for measurements of the neutron capture cross section required in s-process nucleosynthesis. This contribution presents an overview on the astrophysical program carried on at the n_TOF facility, the main results and their implications.

Abstract: Heavy elements with Z ≥ 30 are made by neutron capture reactions during stellar He burning and presumably in supernovae. This contribution deals mainly with the slow neutron capture (s) process which is responsible for about one half of the abundances in the mass region between Fe and Bi. The slow time scale implies that the reaction path of this process involves mostly stable isotopes which can be studied in detail in laboratory experiments. The neutron time of flight (n_TOF) facility at CERN is a neutron spallation source, its white neutron energy spectrum ranges from thermal to several MeV, covering the full energy range of interest for nuclear astrophysics, in particular for measurements of the neutron capture cross section required in s-process nucleosynthesis. Abstract: Neutron induced fission cross sections of several isotopes have been measured at the CERN n_TOF spallation neutron facility. Between them some measurements involve isotopes (233U, 241Am, 243Am, 245Cm) relevant for applications to nuclear technologies. The n_TOF facility delivers neutrons with high instantaneous flux and in a wide energy range, from thermal up to 250 MeV. The experimental apparatus consists of an ionization chamber that discriminates fission fragments and α particles coming from natural radioactivity of the samples. Abstract: The neutron Time-of-Flight facility at CERN was built to measure the neutron capture and fission cross sections. A short description of the facility, the detectors and the data analysis techniques will be illustrated. A short review of the preliminary results on the fission cross sections is presented together with the implications in fundamental nuclear physics and in nuclear technologies. Abstract: The U233(n,f) cross section has been measured at the white neutron source n-TOF in a wide energy range with a dedicated fission ionization chamber. We report here the results from ∼30 meV to 1 MeV neutron energy. The U233(n,f) cross section has been determined relative to a reference sample of U235(n,f) measured simultaneously with the same detector. The very high instantaneous neutron flux and the intrinsically low background of the n-TOF installation result in an accuracy around 3% in the whole energy range, while the energy resolution of the neutron beam allows for an accurate description of the fission cross section by means of R-matrix analysis over a wide energy range. The results are, in general, in good agreement with the most recent high-accuracy measurement of this fission cross section, over the more limited range of the previous measurements, and indicated that even the latest evaluations underestimate the cross section in the epithermal region. The present high-quality data provide the basis for a more precise evaluation of the U233 fission cross section and for improving the reliability of databases needed for the design of new energy systems based on the Th/U cycle. © 2009 The American Physical Society

Abstract: The n_TOF Collaboration has built and commissioned a high-performance detector for (n, gamma) measurements called the Total Absorption Calorimeter (TAC). The TAC was especially designed for measuring neutron capture cross-sections of low-mass and/or radioactive samples with the accuracy required for nuclear technology and stellar nucleosynthesis. We present a detailed description of the TAC and discuss its overall performance in terms of energy and time resolution, background discrimination, detection efficiency and neutron sensitivity.
