Abstract

Aim of this work was to develop a validated high performance liquid chromatography method for the analysis of extracts and final products of St. John's wort, according to international guidelines for bioanalytical method validation. Chromatographic separation was performed on a C18 column with a combination of gradient and isocratic steps; the mobile phase composed of ammonium acetate solution (pH 4.5; 10 mM), acetonitrile and methanol. Quantification and method validation was performed using extract spiked with external reference standards of chlorogenic acid, rutin, hyperoside, isoquercitrin, quercetin and hypericin. Validation study revealed that trans-chlorogenic acid is partially transformed into its cis-isomer during analysis. The method showed good linearity, precision and accuracy. Hyperforin was completely unstable. All other ingredients were stable at -18°C and after three freeze-thaw cycles, while stability of most ingredients was limited at room temperature and 4 - 8°C; quercetin was the most unstable one. The major ingredients of methanolic extracts, infusions and final products of Hypericum perforatum were completely resolved and quantified. Beyond its potential usefulness in the analysis of St. John's wort products, this study addresses the issue of validation from the perspective of the field of bioanalysis and reveals the wealth of critical information which can be derived.

We have designed, constructed and installed a system that makes an accurate 3D map of the electron drift velocity and measures the space-charge distorting effects in the TPCs of the DELPHI Barrel RICH detector. Details of the design considerations, construction and production are given.

Abstract

Measurements are presented of the cross section ratios Rℓ = σℓ(e+e-→ℓ+ℓ -)/σhh(e+e-→hadrons) for ℓ = e, μ and τ using data taken from a scan around the Z0. The results are Re = (5.09±0.32±0.18)%, Rμ = (4.96±0.35±0.17)% and Rτ,=(4.72±0.38± 0.29)% where, for the ratio Re, the t-channel contribution has been subtracted. These results are consistent with the hypothesis of lepton universality and test this hypothesis at the energy scale s ∼ 8300 GeV2. The absolute cross sections σℓ(e+e-→ℓ +ℓ-) have also been measured. From the cross sections the leptonic partial widths Γe = (83.2±3.0±2.4) MeV, (ΓeΓμ) 1/2=(84.6±3.0±2.4) MeV and (ΓeΓτ) 1/2=(82.6±3.3±3.2) MeV have been extracted. Assuming lepton universality the ratio Γℓ/Γh=(4.89±0.20± 0.12) × 10-2 was obtained, together with Γℓ=(83.6±1.8±2.2) MeV. The number of light neutrino species is determined to be Nv=3.12±0.24±0.25. Abstract

The DELPHI detector installed in the LEP (Large Electron-Positron Collider) is equipped with RICH (ring imaging Cherenkov) counters. The barrel part incorporates a liquid (C/sub 6/F/sub 14/) and a gaseous (C/sub 5/F/sub 12/) radiator, providing particle identification up to 20 GeV/c. The Cherenkov photons of both radiators are detected by TPC (time projection chamber)-like photon detectors. The drift gas (75% CH/sub 4/+25% C/sub 2/H/sub 6/) is doped with TMAE (tetrakis-dimethylamine-ethylene) by which the ultraviolet Cherenkov photons are converted into single free photoelectrons. These are drifted towards multiwire proportional chambers at the end of the drift tubes, and the space coordinates of the conversion point are determined. One half of the barrel RICH is now equipped with drift tubes and has provided results from the liquid radiator since spring 1990. The gas radiator has been tested with C/sub 2/F/sub 6/ as a preliminary filling since August 1990. The data obtained demonstrate the good particle identification potential. For the liquid radiator, the number of detected photons per ring in hadron jets is N=8, whereas for muon pairs (single tracks) N=10 has been obtained. For the gas radiator, 2.1 photons per track were observed, which demonstrates good functioning of the focussing mirrors. >

Abstract

Hadronic decays of Z 0 bosons are studied in the Delphi detector. Global event variables and singel particles inclusive distributions are compared with QCD-based predictions. The mean charged multiplicity is found to be 20.6±1.0 (stat+syst). The mean values of the sphericity, aplanarity, thrust, minor value, p in T and p out T are compared with values found at lower energy e + e − colliders.

Abstract

First measurements of the mass and width of the Z0 performed at the newly commissioned LEP Collider by the DELPHI Collaboration are presented. The measuements are derived from the study of multihadronic final states produced in e+e- annihilations at several energies around the Z0 mass. The values found for the mass and width are M(Z0)=91.06±0.09 (stat) ±0.045 (syst.) GeV and Γ(Z0)=2.42±0.21 (stat.) GeV respectively, froma three-parameter fit to the line shape. A two-parameter fit in the framework of the standard model yields for the number of light neutrino species Nν=2.4±0.4 (stat.) ±0.5 (syst.), 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published
