Abstract: Abstract We report a determination of the CKM angle ϕ 3, also known as γ, from a combination of measurements using samples of up to 711 fb −1 from the Belle experiment and up to 362 fb −1 from the Belle II experiment. We combine results from analyses of B + → DK +, B + → Dπ +, and B + → D * K + decays, where D is an admixture of D 0 and D ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ mesons, in a likelihood fit to obtain ϕ 3 = (75.2 ± 7.6) ° . We also briefly discuss the interpretation of this result.

Abstract: Abstract We report measurements of the e + e − → B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ , B B ¯ ∗ $$ B{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ , and B ∗ B ¯ ∗ $$ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ cross sections at four energies, 10653, 10701, 10746 and 10805 MeV, using data collected by the Belle II experiment. We reconstruct one B meson in a large number of hadronic final states and use its momentum to identify the production process. In the first 2 – 5 MeV above B ∗ B ¯ ∗ $$ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ threshold, the e + e − → B ∗ B ¯ ∗ $$ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ cross section increases rapidly. This may indicate the presence of a pole close to the threshold.

Abstract: Abstract We present a study of Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 π 0 $$ {\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\pi}^0 $$ , Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η $$ {\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0\eta $$ , and Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η ′ $$ {\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\eta}^{\prime } $$ decays using the Belle and Belle II data samples, which have integrated luminosities of 980 fb −1 and 426 fb −1, respectively. We measure the following relative branching fractions B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 π 0 / B Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + = 0.48 ± 0.02 stat ± 0.03 syst , B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η / B Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + = 0.11 ± 0.01 stat ± 0.01 syst , B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η ′ / B Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + = 0.08 ± 0.02 stat ± 0.01 syst $$ {\displaystyle \begin{array}{c}\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\pi}^0\right)/\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right)=0.48\pm 0.02\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.03\left(\textrm{syst}\right),\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0\eta \right)/\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right)=0.11\pm 0.01\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.01\left(\textrm{syst}\right),\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\eta}^{\prime}\right)/\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right)=0.08\pm 0.02\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.01\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\end{array}} $$ for the first time, where the uncertainties are statistical (stat) and systematic (syst). By multiplying by the branching fraction of the normalization mode, B Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + $$ \mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right) $$ , we obtain the following absolute branching fraction results B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 π 0 = 6.9 ± 0.3 stat ± 0.5 syst ± 1.3 norm × 10 − 3 , B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η = 1.6 ± 0.2 stat ± 0.2 syst ± 0.3 norm × 10 − 3 , B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η ′ = 1.2 ± 0.3 stat ± 0.1 syst ± 0.2 norm × 10 − 3 , $$ {\displaystyle \begin{array}{c}\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\pi}^0\right)=\left(6.9\pm 0.3\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.5\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 1.3\left(\operatorname{norm}\right)\right)\times {10}^{-3},\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0\eta \right)=\left(1.6\pm 0.2\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.2\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.3\left(\operatorname{norm}\right)\right)\times {10}^{-3},\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({\varXi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\eta}^{\prime}\right)=\left(1.2\pm 0.3\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.1\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.2\left(\operatorname{norm}\right)\right)\times {10}^{-3},\end{array}} $$ where the third uncertainties are from B Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + $$ \mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right) $$ . The asymmetry parameter for Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 π 0 $$ {\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\pi}^0 $$ is measured to be α Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 π 0 = − 0.90 ± 0.15 stat ± 0.23 syst $$ \alpha \left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\pi}^0\right)=-0.90\pm 0.15\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.23\left(\textrm{syst}\right) $$ .

Abstract: Abstract We present the result of a search for the charged-lepton-flavor violating decay τ − → μ − μ + μ − using a 424 fb −1 sample of data recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB e + e − collider. The selection of e + e − → τ + τ − events is based on an inclusive reconstruction of the non-signal tau decay, and on a boosted decision tree to suppress background. We observe one signal candidate, which is compatible with the expectation from background processes. We set a 90% confidence level upper limit of 1.9 × 10 −8 on the branching fraction of the τ − → μ − μ + μ − decay, which is the most stringent bound to date.

Abstract: Abstract We present a measurement of the ratio R μ = B τ − → μ − ν ¯ μ ν τ / B τ − → e − ν ¯ e ν τ $$ {R}_{\mu }=\mathcal{B}\left({\tau}^{-}\to {\mu}^{-}{\overline{\nu}}_{\mu }{\nu}_{\tau}\right)/\mathcal{B}\left({\tau}^{-}\to {e}^{-}{\overline{\nu}}_e{\nu}_{\tau}\right) $$ of branching fractions B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ of the τ lepton decaying to muons or electrons using data collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB e + e − collider. The sample has an integrated luminosity of 362 ± 2 fb −1 at a centre-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. Using an optimised event selection, a binned maximum likelihood fit is performed using the momentum spectra of the electron and muon candidates. The result, R μ = 0.9675 ± 0.0007 ± 0.0036, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic, is the most precise to date. It provides a stringent test of the light-lepton universality, translating to a ratio of the couplings of the muon and electron to the W boson in τ decays of 0.9974 ± 0.0019, in agreement with the standard model expectation of unity.

Abstract: Abstract We present measurements of the branching fractions of eight B ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ → D (*)+ K − K S ∗ 0 $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ , B − → D (*)0 K − K S ∗ 0 $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ decay channels. The results are based on data from SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions at the Υ(4S) resonance collected with the Belle II detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 362 fb −1. The event yields are extracted from fits to the distributions of the difference between expected and observed B meson energy, and are efficiency-corrected as a function of m(K − K S ∗ 0 $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ ) and m(D (*) K S ∗ 0 $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ ) in order to avoid dependence on the decay model. These results include the first observation of B ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ → D + K − K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ , B − → D* 0 K − K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ , and B ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ → D* + K − K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ decays and a significant improvement in the precision of the other channels compared to previous measurements. The helicity-angle distributions and the invariant mass distributions of the K − K S ∗ 0 $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ systems are compatible with quasi-two-body decays via a resonant transition with spin-parity J P = 1− for the K − K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ systems and J P = 1+ for the K − K* 0 systems. We also present measurements of the branching fractions of four B ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ → D (*)+ D s − $$ {D}_s^{-} $$ , B − → D (*)0 D s − $$ {D}_s^{-} $$ decay channels with a precision compatible to the current world averages.

Abstract: Abstract We present an analysis of the process e + e − → π + π − Υ(nS) (where n = 1, 2, or 3) reconstructed in 19.6 fb −1 of Belle II data during a special run of the SuperKEKB collider at four energy points near the peak of the Υ(10753) resonance. By analyzing the mass distribution of the π + π − Υ(nS) system and the Born cross sections of the e + e − → π + π − Υ(nS) process, we report the first observation of Υ(10753) decays to the π + π − Υ(1S) and π + π − Υ(2S) final states, and find no evidence for decays to π + π − Υ(3S). Possible intermediate states in the π + π − Υ(1S, 2S) transitions are also investigated, and no evidence for decays proceeding via the π ∓ Z b ± $$ {\pi}^{\mp }{Z}_b^{\pm } $$ or f 0(980)Υ(nS) intermediate states is found. We measure Born cross sections for the e + e − → π + π − Υ(nS) process that, combined with results from Belle, obtain the mass and width of Υ(10753) to be (10756.6 ± 2.7 ± 0.9) MeV/c 2 and (29.0 ± 8.8 ± 1.2) MeV, respectively. The relative ratios of the Born cross sections at the Υ(10753) resonance peak are also reported for the first time.

Abstract: Abstract We report results from a study of B ± → DK ± decays followed by D decaying to the CP-even final state K + K − and CP-odd final state K S 0 π 0 $$ {K}_S^0{\pi}^0 $$ , where D is an admixture of D 0 and D ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ states. These decays are sensitive to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity-triangle angle ϕ 3. The results are based on a combined analysis of the final data set of 772 × 106 B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and a data set of 198 × 106 B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ pairs collected by the Belle II experiment, both in electron-positron collisions at the Υ(4S) resonance. We measure the CP asymmetries to be A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP+ = (+12.5 ± 5.8 ± 1.4)% and A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP− = (−16.7 ± 5.7 ± 0.6)%, and the ratios of branching fractions to be R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ CP+ = 1.164 ± 0.081 ± 0.036 and R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ CP− = 1.151 ± 0.074 ± 0.019. The first contribution to the uncertainties is statistical, and the second is systematic. The asymmetries A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP+ and A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP− have similar magnitudes and opposite signs; their difference corresponds to 3.5 standard deviations. From these values we calculate 68.3% confidence intervals of (8.5 ° < ϕ 3 < 16.5 ° ) or (84.5 ° < ϕ 3 < 95.5 ° ) or (163.3 ° < ϕ 3 < 171.5 ° ) and 0.321 < r B < 0.465.

Abstract: Abstract We report a search for the charged-lepton flavor violation in Υ(2S) → ℓ ∓ τ ± (ℓ = e, μ) decays using a 25 fb −1 Υ(2S) sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e + e − asymmetric-energy collider. We find no evidence for a signal and set upper limits on the branching fractions ( B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ ) at 90% confidence level. We obtain the most stringent upper limits: B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ (Υ(2S) → μ ∓ τ ± ) < 0.23 × 10 −6 and B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ (Υ(2S) → e ∓ τ ± ) < 1.12 × 10 −6.

10. Molecular simulations reveal that heterogeneous ice nucleation occurs at higher temperatures in water under capillary tension

Abstract: Heterogeneous ice nucleation is thought to be the primary pathway for the formation of ice in mixed-phase clouds, with the number of active ice-nucleating particles (INPs) increasing rapidly with decreasing temperature. Here, molecular-dynamics simulations of heterogeneous ice nucleation demonstrate that the ice nucleation rate is also sensitive to pressure and that negative pressure within supercooled water shifts freezing temperatures to higher temperatures. Negative pressure, or tension, occurs naturally in water capillary bridges and pores and can also result from water agitation. Capillary bridge simulations presented in this study confirm that negative Laplace pressure within the water increases heterogeneous-freezing temperatures. The increase in freezing temperatures with negative pressure is approximately linear within the atmospherically relevant range of 1 to −1000 atm. An equation describing the slope depends on the latent heat of freezing and the molar volume difference between liquid water and ice. Results indicate that negative pressures of −500 atm, which correspond to nanometer-scale water surface curvatures, lead to a roughly 4 K increase in heterogeneous-freezing temperatures. In mixed-phase clouds, this would result in an increase of approximately 1 order of magnitude in active INP concentrations. The findings presented here indicate that any process leading to negative pressure in supercooled water may play a role in ice formation, consistent with experimental evidence of enhanced ice nucleation due to surface geometry or mechanical agitation of water droplets. This points towards the potential for dynamic processes such as contact nucleation and droplet collision or breakup to increase ice nucleation rates through pressure perturbations.

Abstract: Abstract We present a search for the lepton-flavor-violating decays B s 0 $$ {B}_s^0 $$ → ℓ ∓ τ ± , where ℓ = e, μ, using the full data sample of 121 fb −1 collected at the Υ(5S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. We use B s 0 B ¯ s 0 $$ {B}_s^0{\overline{B}}_s^0 $$ events in which one B s 0 $$ {B}_s^0 $$ meson is reconstructed in a semileptonic decay mode and the other in the signal mode. We find no evidence for B s 0 $$ {B}_s^0 $$ → ℓ ∓ τ ± decays and set upper limits on their branching fractions at 90% confidence level as B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ ( B s 0 $$ {B}_s^0 $$ → e ∓ τ ± ) < 14 × 10 −4 and B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ ( B s 0 $$ {B}_s^0 $$ → μ ∓ τ ± ) < 7.3 × 10 −4. Our result represents the first upper limit on the B s 0 $$ {B}_s^0 $$ → e ∓ τ ± decay rate.

Abstract: Abstract We report the first measurement of the inclusive e + e − → b b ¯ $$ b\overline{b} $$ → D s ± $$ {D}_s^{\pm } $$ X and e + e − → b b ¯ $$ b\overline{b} $$ → D 0 / D ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ X cross sections in the energy range from 10.63 to 11.02 GeV. Based on these results, we determine σ(e + e − → B s 0 B ¯ s 0 $$ {B}_s^0{\overline{B}}_s^0 $$ X) and σ(e + e − → B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ X) in the same energy range. We measure the fraction of B s 0 $$ {B}_s^0 $$ events at Υ(10860) to be f s = ( 22.0 − 2.1 + 2.0 $$ {22.0}_{-2.1}^{+2.0} $$ )%. We determine also the ratio of the B s 0 $$ {B}_s^0 $$ inclusive branching fractions B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ ( B s 0 $$ {B}_s^0 $$ → D 0 / D ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ X)/ B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ ( B s 0 $$ {B}_s^0 $$ → D s ± $$ {D}_s^{\pm } $$ X) = 0.416 ± 0.018 ± 0.092. The results are obtained using the data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider.

Abstract: Abstract We measure the cross section of e + e − → η c J/ψ at the Υ(nS)(n = 1–5) on-resonance and 10.52 GeV off-resonance energy points using the full data sample collected by the Belle detector with an integrated luminosity of 955 fb −1. We also search for double charmonium production in e + e − → η c J/ψ via initial state radiation near the η c J/ψ threshold. No evident signal of the double charmonium state is found, but evidence for the e + e − → η c J/ψ process is found with a statistical significance greater than 3.3σ near the η c J/ψ threshold. The average cross section near the threshold is measured and upper limits of cross sections are set for other regions.

Abstract: Abstract Using a data sample of 980 fb −1 collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider, we study for the first time the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays Ω c 0 → Ξ − π + $$ {\Omega}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+} $$ and Ω − K + and the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay Ω c 0 → Ξ − K + $$ {\Omega}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{K}^{+} $$ . Evidence for an Ω c 0 $$ {\Omega}_c^0 $$ signal in the Ω c 0 $$ {\Omega}_c^0 $$ → Ξ − π + mode is reported with a significance of 4.5σ including systematic uncertainties. The ratio of branching fractions to the normalization mode Ω c 0 $$ {\Omega}_c^0 $$ → Ω − π + is measured to be B Ω c 0 → Ξ − π + / B Ω c 0 → Ω − π + = 0.253 ± 0.052 stat . ± 0.030 syst . . $$ \mathcal{B}\left({\Omega}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right)/\mathcal{B}\left({\Omega}_c^0\to {\Omega}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right)=0.253\pm 0.052\left(\textrm{stat}.\right)\pm 0.030\left(\textrm{syst}.\right). $$ No significant signals of Ω c 0 → Ξ − K + $$ {\Omega}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{K}^{+} $$ and Ω − K + modes are found. The upper limits at 90% confidence level on ratios of branching fractions are determined to be B Ω c 0 → Ξ − K + / B Ω c 0 → Ω − π + < 0.070 $$ \mathcal{B}\left({\Omega}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{K}^{+}\right)/\mathcal{B}\left({\Omega}_c^0\to {\Omega}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right)

Abstract: Marine organisms normally swim at elevated speeds relative to cruising speeds only during strenuous activity, such as predation or escape. We measured swimming speeds of 29 ram ventilating sharks from 10 species and of three Atlantic bluefin tunas immediately after exhaustive exercise (fighting a capture by hook-and-line) and unexpectedly found all individuals exhibited a uniform mechanical response, with swimming speed initially two times higher than the cruising speeds reached approximately 6 h later. We hypothesized that elevated swimming behaviour is a means to increase energetic demand and drive the removal of lactate accumulated during capture via oxidation. To explore this hypothesis, we estimated the mechanical work that must have been spent by an animal to elevate its swim speed and then showed that the amount of lactate that could have been oxidized to fuel it comprises a significant portion of the amount of lactate normally observed in fishes after exhaustive exercise. An estimate for the full energetic cost of the catch-and-release event ensued.

Abstract: Abstract We present measurements of the branching fractions for the decays B → Kμ + μ − and B → Ke + e − , and their ratio (R K ), using a data sample of 711 fb −1 that contains 772 × 106 B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ events. The data were collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. The ratio R K is measured in five bins of dilepton invariant-mass-squared (q 2): q 2 ∈ (0.1, 4.0), (4.00, 8.12), (1.0, 6.0), (10.2, 12.8) and (> 14.18) GeV2 /c 4, along with the whole q 2 region. The R K value for q 2 ∈ (1.0, 6.0) GeV2 /c 4 is 1.03 − 0.24 + 0.28 $$ {1.03}_{-0.24}^{+0.28} $$ ± 0.01. The first and second uncertainties listed are statistical and systematic, respectively. All results for R K are consistent with Standard Model predictions. We also measure CP-averaged isospin asymmetries in the same q 2 bins. The results are consistent with a null asymmetry, with the largest difference of 2.6 standard deviations occurring for the q 2 ∈ (1.0, 6.0) GeV2 /c 4 bin in the mode with muon final states. The measured differential branching fractions, d ℬ $$ d\mathrm{\mathcal{B}} $$ /dq 2, are consistent with theoretical predictions for charged B decays, while the corresponding values are below the expectations for neutral B decays. We have also searched for lepton-flavor-violating B → Kμ ± e ∓ decays and set 90% confidence-level upper limits on the branching fraction in the range of 10 −8 for B + → K + μ ± e ∓, and B 0 → K 0 μ ± e ∓ modes.

Abstract: Abstract A quantum critical point (QCP) is currently being conjectured for the BaFe2(As1−x P x )2 system at the critical value x c ≈ 0.3. In the proximity of a QCP, all thermodynamic and transport properties are expected to scale with a single characteristic energy, given by the quantum fluctuations. Such a universal behavior has not, however, been found in the superconducting upper critical field H c2. Here we report H c2 data for epitaxial thin films extracted from the electrical resistance measured in very high magnetic fields up to 67 Tesla. Using a multi-band analysis we find that H c2 is sensitive to the QCP, implying a significant charge carrier effective mass enhancement at the doping-induced QCP that is essentially band-dependent. Our results point to two qualitatively different groups of electrons in BaFe2(As1−x P x )2. The first one (possibly associated to hot spots or whole Fermi sheets) has a strong mass enhancement at the QCP, and the second one is insensitive to the QCP. The observed duality could also be present in many other quantum critical systems.

Abstract: Abstract A search is made for charged Higgs bosons predicted by Two-Higgs-Doublet extensions of the Standard Model (2HDM) using electron-positron collision data collected by the OPAL experiment at $\sqrt{s}=189\mbox{--}209\ \mbox{GeV}$ , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 600 pb−1. Charged Higgs bosons are assumed to be pair-produced and to decay into $\mathrm{q} \bar{\mathrm{q}}$ , τν τ or AW±. No signal is observed. Model-independent limits on the charged Higgs-boson production cross section are derived by combining these results with previous searches at lower energies. Under the assumption $\mathrm{BR} (\mathrm{H}^{\pm} \to \tau\nu_{\tau}) + \mathrm{BR} (\mathrm{H}^{\pm} \to \mathrm{q} \bar{\mathrm{q}}) = 1$ , motivated by general 2HDM type II models, excluded areas on the $[m_{\mathrm{H}^{\pm}} , \mathrm{BR} (\mathrm {H}^{\pm} \to \tau\nu_{\tau})]$ plane are presented and charged Higgs bosons are excluded up to a mass of 76.3 GeV at 95 % confidence level, independent of the branching ratio BR(H±→τν τ). A scan of the 2HDM type I model parameter space is performed and limits on the Higgs-boson masses $m_{\mathrm{H}^{\pm}}$ and m A are presented for different choices of tanβ.

Abstract: MAT (multi-auto-transformation) vector system has been one of the strategies to excise the selection marker gene from transgenic plants. Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain EHA105 harboring an ipt-type MAT vector, pNPI132, was used to produce morphologically normal transgenic Petunia hybrida 'Dainty Lady' employing isopentenyl transferase (ipt) gene as the selection marker gene. β-glucuronidase (GUS) gene was used as model gene of interest. Infected explants were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium without plant growth regulators (PGR) and antibiotics. Shoots showing extreme shooty phenotype (ESP) were produced from the adventitious shoots separated from the explants. Visual selection was carried out until production of morphologically normal shoots (approximately 4 months after infection). Histochemical GUS assay detected GUS gene in both ESP and normal shoots. PCR analysis confirmed the presence of model gene (GUS gene) and excision of the selection marker (ipt) gene in the normal transgenic plants. The insertion sites (1-3 for ipt gene and 1-2 for GUS gene) were detected by Southern blot analysis using DIG-labeled probes of both genes. These results show that ipt-type MAT vector can be used successfully to produce marker-free transgenic Petunia hybrida plants on PGR- and antibiotic-free MS medium.

Abstract: Prunus × yedoensis ‘Somei-yoshino’ is the most popular cultivar of flowering cherry in Japan. Although the origin of this cultivar has been considered hybrid between P. pendula f. ascendens and P. lannesiana var. speciosa, the paternity of P. lannesiana has not been clearly proven by molecular analysis. To reveal the origin of ‘Somei-yoshino,’ we analyzed sequences of intron 19 and exon 20 of PolA1, a single-copy nuclear gene encoding the largest subunit of RNA polymerase I. One of two exon 20 sequences found in ‘Somei-yoshino’ was the same as that of P. pendula, whereas the other sequence was shared with several taxa in seven wild species, including P. jamasakura and P. lannesiana. ‘Someiyoshino’ contained two different haplotypes of the intron 19 sequences; one was the same as that of P. lannesiana, which is endemic to the Izu and Boso Peninsula in Japan. While another haplotype of ‘Somei-yoshino’ was different from that of P. pendula by two SNPs but identical to one of two haplotypes of P. pendula ‘Komatsu-otome,’ which is a cultivar found in the Ueno Park, Tokyo. These results indicated that ‘Somei-yoshino’ probably originated by the hybridization of cultivars derived from P. pendula and P. lannesiana.

Abstract: Yersinia pestis, the bacterial agent of plague, is primarily a parasite of wild rodents that persists in permanent, discrete enzootic foci throughout the world. The disease is transmitted in humans by bites from fleas of wildlife rodent species. Therefore surveillance is the ultimate public health solution through plague detection in domestic dogs, other carnivores and wild rodents. The investigations of die-offs amongst plague-susceptible colonial rodents are also significant to determine the presence of Y. pestis in a susceptible population. This study details the identification of the plague reservoir in a suspected endemic area of Zambia. The study was undertaken through rodent investigation for the presence of Y. pestis. A total of 105 rodents were sampled routinely and during a suspected plague period. On dissection 4 (3.81%, 95% CI: 1.23−10.0) rodents sampled during an outbreak showed signs of spleen enlargement. The blood, liver, lymph nodes and spleen of each rodent were subjected to culture on 6% sheep blood agar and MaCconkey agar. Colonies obtained were identified as Y. pestis by colony morphologic features, biochemical profiles, mouse inoculation assay and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The PCR primers used targeted the Y. pestis plasminogen activator gene, chromosomal ferric iron uptake regulation gene and the outer membrane protein B gene. The isolates were also subjected to antibiotic sensitivity tests using the disk diffusion method on Mueller-Hinton agar with sensitivity being observed with ampicillin, amoxicillin, chloramphenicol, gentamycin, streptomycin, tetracycline and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. The findings, identifies a natural reservoir of Y. pestis in Zambia providing the public health officials with a definite host for the control strategy.

Abstract: The existing VMEbus (VersaModular Eurocard bus) International Trade Association (VITA)-78 industry standard, also known as SpaceVPX, is an avionics board- and chassis-level standard derived from the OpenVPX standard as defined in VITA-65. While VITA-65 defines backplane and board-level profiles from COTS vendors to ensure interoperability of products used in developing systems and subsystems, the VITA-78 standard defines SpaceVPX to incorporate fault tolerance features that are required by many spaceflight systems. However, VITA-78 allows so much flexibility that interoperability between modules cannot be assured. This assessment provides guidelines on the use of, and extensions to, the VITA-78 standard to enable avionics interoperability for future NASA missions. The assessment team was comprised of subject matter experts (SMEs) from Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Johnson Space Center (JSC), and Langley Research Center (LaRC). The team included valuable external consulting support from a SME who was a key participant in the development of the VITA-78 standard. The team had extensive collaboration with the NASA Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) High Performance Spaceflight Computing (HPSC) project, specifically in the development of SpaceVPX interconnect findings, observations, and NESC recommendations. To provide an understanding of the breadth of implementations that SpaceVPX must accommodate, multiple NASA use cases were analyzed to assess the requirements for SpaceVPX implementations across a wide range of NASA missions (Appendix C). Applications included crewed missions, science missions, and orbital and surface robotic systems. Product surveys were conducted to assess the level of industry support for SpaceVPX, applications, and the variations in their implementations (Appendix D). In-depth analysis was conducted in the areas of: (a) power management and distribution, (b) form factors and daughtercards, (c) interconnect, and (d) fault tolerance. Leveraging the use cases, product surveys, and SMEs from multiple NASA Centers, these areas were analyzed to determine the range of implementations permitted by the VITA-78 standard and potential interoperability issues. Applicable findings and NESC recommendations were provided for each area. During this assessment, there were multiple opportunities to engage with other agencies to learn about their interest in SpaceVPX, their strategies for implementing SpaceVPX-based systems, and their internal development efforts. These engagements also generated findings and NESC recommendations. Based on this assessment analysis, NESC recommendations were made regarding the feature set and module profiles to support NASA SpaceVPX implementations. This feature set includes restrictions on features in VITA-78, and extensions to the standard. Key recommendations in this area include the use of 10 Gigabit Ethernet and Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) as high bandwidth interconnect on the backplane, the retention of SpaceWire interconnect for control functions, and support for 3U (unit) and 6U, form factors for NASA systems. Restrictions were proposed on the usage of user-defined signals to promote interoperability, and specific power managements and distribution schemes for 3U systems. Beyond the technical implementation of SpaceVPX, recommendations were made on areas that warrant further investigation. Primary among these is the recommendation for NASA to collaborate with other space-going agencies and industry to incorporate recommendations into a future ‘dot spec’ of VITA-78. This would ensure wide adoption and availability of the modules that comply with the specification. The assessment includes appendices with candidate module profiles that can be considered as a starting point for this activity, and example systems based on the recommendations. Follow-on studies are recommended for architectures beyond SpaceVPX to address potential enhancements including condensed set of interconnect, software required to implement protocol layers on the interconnect (and other features), alternative power architectures, and system-level testability.

Abstract: Contact tracing for COVID-19 relies heavily on the cooperation of individuals with authorities to provide information of contact persons. However, few studies have clarified willingness to cooperate and motivation to provide information for contact tracing. This study sought to describe willingness to cooperate and motivation to report contact persons for COVID-19 contact tracing among citizens in Japan, and to assess any associated sociodemographic factors.Cross-sectional study.This was an online-based survey using quota sampling. Participants were asked about their willingness to cooperate in reporting contacts for COVID-19 contact tracing if they tested positive. Participants also responded to questions regarding their reasons for cooperating or not cooperating and provided sociodemographic data. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to clarify associations between sociodemographic factors and willingness to cooperate.This study included 2844 participants. The proportion of participants who were not willing to cooperate in reporting contacts was 27.6%, with their main reasons being concerns about causing trouble for the other person and being criticised for revealing their names. Willingness to cooperate was lower among men, young adults and those with an educational level less than a university degree.To improve the effectiveness of contact tracing, educational campaigns, such as reducing the fear and stigma associated with COVID-19, may be important. Furthermore, it is essential to understand that individuals may have contacts whom they do not wish to disclose to others and to be considerate when handling such situations.

Abstract: An absolute measurement of the Λ_{c}^{+} lifetime is reported using Λ_{c}^{+}→pK^{-}π^{+} decays in events reconstructed from data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. The total integrated luminosity of the data sample, which was collected at center-of-mass energies at or near the ϒ(4S) resonance, is 207.2 fb^{-1}. The result, τ(Λ_{c}^{+})=203.20±0.89±0.77 fs, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, is the most precise measurement to date and is consistent with previous determinations.
