This contribution reports on the biosynthesis of Nanoscaled Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) using natural extracts from various parts of the Moringa Oleifera as effective chelating agents. More precisely, natural extracts from flowers, seeds and leaves of Moringa Oleifera as chelating and/or oxidizing/reducing agents of zinc nitrate hexahydrate are reported for the first time in the current literature. The structural and optical properties of ZnO-NPs obtained by the leaves are slightly different from those obtained with the other extracts. The average crystallite sizes of ZnO-NPs calculated via X-rays diffraction analysis are found to be 13.2, 13.9, and 10.8 nm for ZnO-NPs synthesized by the flowers, seeds, and leaves respectively while the direct band gap values deducted from Tauc approximation are 3.12, 3.18 and 3.25 eV. From the photoluminescence analysis at room temperature, a broad band in the visible centered around 450 nm is obtained for all the zinc oxide nanoparticles. One major bioactive compound for each solution extract was used to propose a mechanism of the reaction of ZnO-NPs formation: L-ascorbic acid for the leaves, quercetin for the flowers and oleic acid for the seeds.

This contribution reports on the biosynthesis of nickel oxide and zinc oxide nanoparticles (NiO-NPs & ZnO-NPs) via a natural extract from Moringa Oleifera leaves as an effective chelating and/or oxidizing/reduction agent of nickel nitrate hexahydrate and zinc nitrate hexahydrate. The structural and optical properties of these two types of semiconductors obtained in a similar procedure are investigated using X-rays Diffraction (XRD), Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR), diffuse reflectance UV-Visible-NIR and Photoluminescence (PL) techniques. The structural analysis shows the formation of pure cubic NiO-NPs and pure wurtzite ZnO-NPs with an average crystallite size of 17.80 nm and 10.81 nm respectively. Their band gaps, calculated from the diffuse reflectance analysis were found to be 4.28 eV and 3.35 eV respectively.

In this study, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in powder and in thin film were successfully synthesized first time using an eco-friendly, simple and cost effective green synthesis method mediated by corn husk (Zea mays) extract as an effective chelating agent, and zinc nitrate hexahydrate as precursor. Diverse characterizations techniques such as High Resolution - Scanning Electron Microscopy (HR-SEM), Energy Dispersive X- rays Spectroscopy (EDS), X-Rays Diffraction (XRD), and UV - Vis - NIR spectroscopy as well as Photoluminescence (PL) were investigated to confirm ZnO NPs nature. For the ZnO NPs powder, highly crystalline ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) annealed at 500°C which are 48.635 nm in particles size were characterised by HR-SEM and XRD analysis. The structure morphology and the constituents of the resultant ZnO powder were investigated respectively by HR-SEM and EDS. UV - Visible spectroscopy analysis was investigated on the optical band gap of ZnO NPs, which was calculated to be 3.31 eV. This result indicates that ZnO NPs can be used in metal oxide semiconductor-based devices. For the ZnO NPs thin film, XRD patterns of hexagonal wurtzite structure with c/a ratio about of 1.60 and μ - parameter of 0.38 were obtained. PL measurements showed a broad emission band in the 380 - 800 nm range, centred at 481 nm. ZnO NPs thin film yielded relatively more intense photoluminescence spectra than the ZnO NPs powder. The intrinsic point defects and defect level transitions responsible for the broad emission are discussed.

This study presents an ensemble stream flow simulation with probability of occurrence accounting for errors of the GR4J turned to the Senegal River upper the Manantali dam. Through this approach, probability is associated to simulation at each time, with step and reliability of issues depending on probability scores. Results including the reliability of the results permit decision-makers to judge the reliability of their simulations. Past errors pattern of the model is used to perturb the model for issuing ensemble scenarios rather than classical single deterministic. Basic and reverse Box-Cox transformation is carried out to allow treatment of the errors through weighted multivariate Gaussian distribution. Statistic errors are then used to perturb the hydrological model to obtain ensemble issues (RAW-Ens). Furthermore, a post-processing method (affine kernel dressing) is performed to produce a dressed ensemble (AKD-Ens). Ensembles are evaluated at deterministic and probabilistic scale. Diagrams (attribute and ROC) are also used for this purpose. Evaluating methods reveal through scores that the system is reliable and that dressing method (AKD) improves quality of the raw ensemble drawn from the perturbed model. Key words: Senegal River, Bafing, Manantali dam, Ensemble simulation, Kernel dressing.

Facial soft-tissue analyses made from photographic records (photogrammetric analysis of the soft tissues) showed interracial dimorphism. Standard of these facial analyses, originally obtained from Caucasian might not be appropriate for the diagnosis and treatment planning of other groups of orthodontic patients. The purpose of this study was to compare the sagittal photogrammetric soft tissue profile characteristics between Senegalese and Moroccan adults.A cross-sectional study was performed in a group of Senegalese and Moroccan students in the Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry of Dakar. Standardized facial-profile photographs were taken with each student in natural head position, centric relation, and relaxed lip posture. Twenty four linear parameters were measured on paper sheet using a graduated ruler. For each variable mean and SD were calculated. In addition independent samples t-test was performed to detect sexual and racial dimorphism. Results were regarded as significant at p = 0.05.Senegalese subjects had significantly more lips protrusion than Moroccan who had significantly a more elongated and more anterior positioned nose, a more chin prominence and a tendency to cutaneous class II than Senegalese.Further studies including different age groups subjects would allow having longitudinal data according to age.

Placental Plasmodium falciparum sequestration is associated with dysregulated immune function. Placental inflammatory responses via IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha are implicated in functional damage. However, they are needed during placental infection to control asexual stage parasites. To test the hypothesis that placental immunomodulation associated with malaria disturbs cytokine secretion differently in monocytes and lymphocytes, we have determined the proportion of monocytes and/or lymphocytes secreting IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, IL-10 and IL-12. Intervillous and peripheral blood monocyte (CD14+) and lymphocyte (CD3/CD4+; CD3/CD8+) cytokine production was compared between 17 P. falciparum-infected and 12 non-infected Senegalese women. After culture with phorbolmyristate acetate/ionomycin (PMA/iono), lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or P. falciparum-infected erythrocytes (IE), the intracellular expression of cytokines in lymphocytes (IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha) and monocytes (IL-10, IL-12, TNF-alpha), was detected. In response to IE, CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells produced IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha at similar rates in both compartments. In response to PMA/iono, the frequencies of CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells producing IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha were similar in both compartments, but increased in P. falciparum-infected placentas. In response to LPS or IE, IL-12 secreting monocytes were increased in infected women, while the frequency of TNF-alpha secreting monocytes was decreased compared to that in non-infected placenta. The monocyte IL-12 response is not impaired in infected women. IL-12 is an important factor for inducing IFN-gamma in T-cells. Thus, IL-12 and IFN-alpha responses may synergistically allow a protective immune response in placental malaria. TNF-alpha production by CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells is up-regulated in P. falciparum-infected placentas, suggesting that T-cells actively participate to inflammatory responses.

Prosthetic teeth size and placement must be in perfect harmony with the bucco-facial structures for a successful and esthetic removable prosthesis. This study aimed to determine among young Senegalese black people facial index estimating maxillary central incisor width and distance between canine points starting from bizygomatic width.621 black Senegalese participated to this transversal study. Measurements were made using anthropometric slide caliper and electronic slide caliper. The comparative analysis was carried out by the test t of Student. The correlative analysis used the chi-square test. The risk of error was fixed at 5%.Positive correlations were found between variables. Distance between canine points was significantly (p = 0.000) correlated to bizygomatic width and central incisor width. Using bizygomatic width, the average dividing factors to estimate central incisor width and distance between canine points were respectively 15.13 and 3.75.Distance between canine points and central incisor width can be given starting from bizygomatic width, as guide of selecting maxillary anterior prosthetic teeth width.

High prevalence of chronic orofacial pain in women and its relationship with ovarian states suggest that ovarian hormones may be involved in the control of orofacial nociception. Since the interaction between ovarian hormones and nociception seems more evident in the orofacial area than in many other parts of the body, a possible site specificity of an ovarian hormone effect on nociception was tested in rats. Two nociceptive tests were applied to three groups of male rats ( n =46) and three groups of female rats ( n =46), that were gonadectomised ( n =17), sham-operated ( n =15) or intact ( n =14). Each rat in each group received a local subcutaneous injection of formalin in the upper lip and in the hindpaw. Upper lip injection resulted in an increased occurrence of upper lip rubbing for more than 45 min and hindpaw injection resulted in an increased occurrence of hindpaw licking for about 1 h. The duration of the nociceptive behaviours was measured at 3 months after surgery. No significant difference was found between intact and sham-operated animals. A significant increase (54%) in the upper lip rubbing but not the hindpaw licking was observed in gonadectomised females. No difference was observed in castrated males for upper lip rubbing, but a tendency towards an increased duration (102%) of hindpaw licking was noted. The depletion in gonadal hormones was confirmed 3 months after gonadectomy and after the sacrifice of the animals, by the observed decline in the bone mineral density measured on the femur of 40 rats belonging to the six groups. A role of ovarian hormones was also suggested after immunostaining of oestrogen receptors in the lamina II of Caudalis subnucleus of the trigeminal sensory complex and cervical (C1–C2) spinal dorsal horn. The number of cells expressing oestrogen receptors displayed a small (13.6%) but significant ( P =0.037) increase in ovariectomised compared with sham-operated rats. These results suggest that the lack of ovarian hormones induces a site-specific increase in the sensitivity to orofacial nociceptive stimulation, and that an up-regulation of oestrogen receptors in the Caudalis subnucleus and C1-C2 dorsal horn may be one of the factors involved in this effect.

Upper airways obstruction can result in the reduction of the transversal dimensions of the maxillary arch which affect the vertical and the sagittal dimensions. The PNIF measure is an objec- tive and cheap way to assess the upper airways permeability. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between PNIF and dental arch sizes.Seventy eight patients (40 girls and 38 boys) age ranged 10-15 years were included in this cross sectional study. The PNIF was measured with a Youlten peak flow meter (Clement Clarke International, London, United Kingdom). The sagittal, vertical and transversal dimensions of the dental arches were evaluated on dental casts with a digital caliper (Mitutoyo Corporation, Tokyo, Japan). T test was used to assess differences in PNIF and dental arches variables between subjects grouped according to sex (male and female). The Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to analyze the relationship between the dental arches sizes and the PNIF. The significance was set at p0.05.PNIF rate was higher in girls than in boys but the difference was not significant. There were sexual dimorphism regarding the anterior and total lengths of the upper arch, the total length of the lower arch and the maxillary intermolar width which are significantly more important for boys (p respectively equal to 0.05; 0.03; 0.04 and 0.04). The PNIF was significantly and negatively correlated with the total length of the upper arch (r = -0.25). The others measurements did not show significant correlation with PNIF.Others parameters are needed to complement the peak nasal inspiratory flow rate for the respiratory disorders related dental arches sizes abnormalities diagnosis.

Rehabilitation with complete denture include among other objectives, improvement of facial and dental esthetics. To these ends, the artificial teeth should mimic as far as possible, healthy and natural dentition. The main objective of this study was to investigate factors associated with tooth color among black African subjects. One hundred and two subjects (72 men and 30 women) were included in this investigation. The colorimetric parameters of their teeth as well as those of the conjunctiva of their eyes and skin were recorded from standardized photographs. Two software, Mesurim and Photoshop were used for that purpose. Univariate and linear regression analysis were run to assess the association between tooth color and the variables age, gender and colorimetric parameters of eyes and skin. It appears from the result of this study that tooth color was positively and significantly associated with age. Stepwise multiple regression analysis further revealed that tooth hue can be best predicted by a combination of skin complexion and brightness and eye lightness.

The aim of our study was to evaluate the incidence of orthodontically induced root resorption during the tooth alignment and leveling phase, and to assess the impact of the variables age, sex and degree and direction of incisor displacement. We studied a consulting population at the dentofacial orthopaedics unit of the Dental Consultation and Treatment Centre (DCTC), Casablanca. Our sample was composed of 30 exposed cases and 30 non-exposed cases, followed up for a period of 8 months. A survey document was drawn up for data collection, and retro-alveolar radiographic imaging was used to evaluate resorption. Our results showed that the patients receiving orthodontic treatment all developed minor root resorptions during the alignment and levelling phase in the incisor group. We found that the central incisors underwent greater resorption than the lateral incisors.

Describe the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of vesicovaginal fistula (VVF).We conducted a retrospective descriptive study of all cases of VVF secondary to hysterectomy. The following parameters were studied: age, parity, indication for hysterectomy, risk factors, the consultation period, the anatomical type of VVF, the paraclinical, the surgical approach and results of the cure.Fourteen cases were identified over 10 years. All hysterectomies were performed by laparotomia. The average age of patients was 54.3±13 years. Hysterectomy was performed in view of a uterine leiomyoma in eight cases, a cancer of the cervix in four cases, a menometrorrhagia in one case and a choriocarcinoma in one case. Four patients had received neoadjuvant radiotherapy. The mean time from injury was 13.5±18 months. Examination under valve was allowed to find 11 VVF type 1 and three type 2 VVF. IVU was normal in seven patients and allowed to find an ureterohydronephrose stage III in one patient. VVF was addressed by high in ten cases including 5 by transperitoneovaginale and 5 by transvesical pure. The postoperative course was uneventful in 11 patients (78%) but marked by vesicocutaneous fistula, parietal suppuration and one failure. In this short series of post-hysterectomy VVF treated by laparotomia, we observed a rate of cure satisfying in spite of an important psychosocial morbidity.

The term anterior open bite refers to a vertical space between the upper and lower front teeth in maximum intercuspation. This malocclusal trait can accompany many malocclusions of the Angle's classification. Two types of anterior open bite have been described: skeletal and dental open bite. The latter may have Non Nutritive Sucking Habits (NNSH) as causal factor and is deemed to aggravate without treatment. This article presents an interceptive approach based on the use of a fixed passive appliance interfering with sucking habit. It consists of a crib soldered to bands adjusted to the maxillary first permanent or temporary second molars. The device was globally well accepted by the patient and has been effective in breaking the sucking habit and subsequently in closing the bite after only 5 month. When psychological approach is not effective, a fixed deterrent device may be recommended for weaning children off nonnutritive sucking habits.

The ICON (Index of Complexity, Outcome and Need) is a new index based on the consensus opinion of 97 European and American orthodontists. It records orthodontics treatment need on the basis of 5 components i.e. crossbite, upper arch crowding/spacing, buccal segment antero-posterior relationship and anterior vertical relationship. This index can be used in epidemiological studies and by public services and third party co-payment for the determination of those patients who may be eligible for public funding or reimbursement of fees.

Each ethnic group has its own characteristics. The aim of this study was to determine the morphological characteristics of a Senegalese population.Sixty two lateral cephalograms of Senegalese patients were assessed in a cross sectional study. All lateral cephalometric films were traced on a transparent cellulose acetate sheet by the same operator. Conventional cephalomebic analysis was performed with 17 measurements (6 linear and 11 angular) t test was used to assess differences in age and cephalometric variable between subjects grouped according to sex (male and female). A P value ofor = 0.05 was considered statistically significant. No statistically significant differences were found between Senegalese men and women. This study shows an increase in the maxillary protrusion and a decrease in the mandibular protrusion with his corollary of skeletal class II. The mean of the vertical dimension measurements suggest a hyperdivergence. Protrusive lips were associated with incisors protrusion. These results which show morphological differences between Senegalese subjects and other populations consolidate the idea that the racial and ethnic characteristics must be taken into account during orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning.

the dental age which can be deduced from the stages of dental maturation is accepted as being a reliable indicator in the estimate of civil age of children whose date of birth is unknown. It is also a good indicator of the biological maturity of growing children and the relevance of its use in paediatric dentistry and orthodontics was proven. Various methods of determination of maturation or dental development from radiographies were described. The mostly used method is that of Demirjian. Studies have shown that genetic factors could influence the maturation of certain organs. Thus, the generalisation of Demirjian standards to others population can be questioned. The aim of the present study was to test the applicability of Demirjian's standards for the determination of the civil age from dental maturation stages. The dental maturation stages of a randomised sample of 200 Senegalese children aged from 6 to 14 years (101 boys and 99 girls) was evaluated by Demirjian's method. Data collected were converted into Dental Age from the conversion charts proposed by Demirjian. The dental age obtained was compared with the civil age of the subjects. The results of this study indicate that the civil age of the patients was overestimated when evaluated from Demirjian's standards (0.89 years for girls and 0.48 years for boys). A linear regression equation was then proposed for the correct estimate of the civil age from the dental maturation stages.

Gingival enlargement is a condition that commonly develops during orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic appliances are irritation and retention plaque factors holding up oral hygiene and control of gingival inflammation. Two cases of gingival hypertrophy in young Senegalese females undergoing orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances are described and treated by gingivectomy. This surgical procedure have led to morphological conditions of gingiva allowing better plaque control and the orthodontic treatment going on. Periodical controls in child and adolescent are required for healthy periodontium during orthodontic therapy. Collaboration between orthodontist and periodontist is one of the most important keys to successful treatment.

Gingival enlargement is a condition that commonly develops during orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic appliances are irritation and retention plaque factors holding up oral hygiene and control of gingival inflammation. This case-report shows localized gingival hypertrophy in young Senegalese female undergoing orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances. Modified Widman flap associated with osseous recontouring have led to morphological conditions of gingiva allowing better plaque control and orthodontic treatment going on. Comfort and controlled haemostasis after periodontal surgery make this procedure a good choice for treatment of gingival hypertrophy. Collaboration between orthodontist and periodontist is required for successful therapeutic.

Three main reasons are routinely cited to justify the provision of orthodontic treatment: improvement of facial and dental aesthetics and of dental health and function. However, association between malocclusions and periodontal condition is still controversial. The aim of the present study was to further investigate the correlation between certain orthodontic anomalies and periodontal condition. One hundred and one subjects were included in this study. Information regarding oral hygiene habits and accessibility to professional oral health care were obtained from each subject. Malocclusions were assessed with the Indice of Orthodontc Treatment Need (IOTN) and the Index of Complexity, Outcome and Need (ICON) and periodontal with the Community Periodontal Index for Treatment Need (CPITN). Spearman Rank correlation order was used to test for any association between malocclusions and periodontal condition. Significance was set at the 5% level.Contact point displacements (malpositions) are positively and significantly correlated to CPITN in the mandibular arch. There was also significant negative correlation between spacing and CPITN in the maxilla. Openbite and overjet assessed by IOTN have a significant positive correlation with the periodontal condition as assessed by the CPITN. In contrast no correlation was found with dental crossbite (IOTN and ICON). At last, there was significant correlation between overbite and periodontal condition.Significant correlations were found between malocclusions and periodontal condition. Within the limitation of this study one can suggest that malocclusions are risk marker for periodontal diseases. However, this study by virtue of its protocol cannot allow us to makeany inference about a cause/effect relationship between malocclusions and periodontal condition.

knowledge on the mesiodistal crown diameter of permanent teeth is relevant to clinical dentistry especially to orthodontics and prosthetic dentistry. Important variations have been reported in tooth crown size dimension between different populations. This seems to be related to complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors. The aim of this study was to compare the mesiodistal crown diameter of the permanent teeth in Moroccan and Senegalese populations.the material for this study consisted of 104 pairs of study models of randomlyselected Moroccan (54 pairs) and Senegalese (50 pairs) children. The maximum mesiodistal dimensions were recorded for premolars, molars, canines and incisors in each study model using an electronic digital calliper (Mitutoyo, Japan) to the nearest 0.01 mm. The mesiodistal diameter of antimeric teeth was compared using paired sample t test. The independent sample t test was used to test for any difference between Moroccan and Senegalese regarding mesiodistal crown diameter of isomeric teeth.there were no significant differences in the mesiodistal diameter of antimeric teeth. The mesiodistal dimension of the canine was significantly larger in males than in females of both populations. The mesiodistal crown diameter of isomeric teeth was significantly larger in Senegalese in comparison to Moroccan.Further work with a larger number of non orthodontic subjects is needed to validate these findings.

Impaction of tooth can be defined as a failure of a tooth to emerge usually due to insufficient space or the presence of a supernumerary tooth blocking its path of eruption. Impaction of the canines deserves particular attention due to their importance regarding occlusal stability and aesthetic. A case of a young girl who presented with an impaction of both upper canines and the lower left canine is reported here. Good therapeutic results have been obtained after 18 month of treatment with a multidisciplinary team involving oral surgeons, periodontists and orthodontists.

Improvement of dentofacial appearance is often the main motives of patient seeking orthodontic treatment. However perception of aesthetic and orthodontic treatment need may be different among populations of different cultural background. The aim of the present study was to compare the perception of aesthetic and orthodontic treatment need between Caucasian (French) and African (Senegalese)In the present study the perception of the attractiveness of 98 colours photographs of dentitions were assessed by 34 Caucasian and 31 African lay judges by mean of a Power Point presentation. Each slide were displayed for evaluation during 20 secondsThe two populations share the same perception of orthodontic aesthetic with respect to some occlusal traits. However they diverge in their appreciation of 70% of the dentitions with midline diastemas. There were also significant differences in the perception of orthodontic treatment need with the Caucasian judges suggesting treatment more often than Africans. The results are discussed in term of accessibility in orthodontic treatment in association with socioeconomic status.

IOTN is an index of orthodontic treatment need that has been devised on the basis of the available evidences of the deleterious effects of malocclusion on the aesthetic and health of the dentition. It has two components i.e. an aesthetic component and a dental health component. This index is widely used in epidemiological research and by third party payment for determination of those patients who should benefit from public funding.

Numerous studies have shown that several red blood cell polymorphisms protect against severe malaria. Such a relation is much less clear for mild malaria attacks and for the asymptomatic carriage of Plasmodium falciparum. The impact of red blood cell polymorphisms on the level of parasite density was assessed in a group of 464 Senegalese children from the Sereer ethnic group, studied for 18 months. These genetic factors were also related to the malarial morbidity, investigated during 2 successive transmission seasons among 169 of these children. The frequencies of the host genetic factors in the whole group were 0.52 for blood group O, 0.13 for hemoglobin S, 0.16 for the G6PD A-deficient variant and 0.24 for alpha(+)-thalassemia (-alpha(3.7) deletion). Hemoglobin S was associated with protection against mild malaria attacks. None of the genetic factors was implicated in a better control of parasite densities. These associations may be particular to this ethnic group due to the specificities of malaria endemicity in this area. The pressure exerted in the area by other non-malarial infectious diseases as well as the genetic heterogeneity of circulating parasites may also contribute to these observations. The aims of this study were to produce odontometric data for a Moroccan population, to test Tanaka and Johnston and Moyers methods, to derive regression equations and elaborate a specific orthodontic prediction table for Moroccan children. 50 dental casts of Moroccan students (25 males, 25 females, mean age 22.6 years sd 1.35) were used to perform measurements of the greatest mesiodistal widths of all mandibular and maxillary canines and premolars and mandibular incisors with an orthodontic calliper. Significant sexual dimorphism was found in tooth sizes (p = .001). The study revealed close relationships between the total mesiodistal widths of the mandibular permanent incisors and that of the maxillary and mandibular canines and premolars. The correlation coefficients (r) and the coefficient of determination (R2) were better sexes combined for the maxilla (r = 0.60 ; R2 = 0.36 ) and for the mandible (r = 0.61 ; R2= 0.37). The regression equations elaborated for males and females were used as a basis for establishing an orthodontic prediction table for Moroccan children.

Class III skeletal abnormalities are known as sagittal defects and they are recognized by a hollow profile, which is an unesthaetical morphological distorsion often ill--accepted by the patient, a severe disability. Due to the large number of clinical patterns, it is crucial to make an accurate diagnosis. Class Ill skeletal abnormalities involving a maxillary brachygnatia are caused by an insufficient development of the jawbone. Treatment will therefore consist in boosting growth of the lower back section of the jawbone. The external device known as Delaire mask which stimulates growth of the lower back section of the jaw is particularly recommended to achieve this. This piece of research set out to assess the effectiveness of this method based on five of our patients. Outstanding results were obtained, namely alveolar ridge slided forward on the jawbone, improved profile (a cutaneous Class I is obtained), and a disappearance of the occlusion, along with a correction of the inverted backward bite. When adequately prescribed, the use of the Delaire mask, as opposed to corrective surgery, leads to a slow and gradual improvement. Furthermore, results achieved among young children blend into their own natural growth. By resorting to early treatment with the mask, it is possible to avoid falling back on complex surgery, which would almost necessarily be of the orthognatic type among adults.

For many authors masticatory dysfunctions are related to reduction in dietary intake with malnutrition as a possible consequence. The aim of the present study was to further investigate the relationships between masticatory performance and nutritional state in complete denture wearers.Masticatory performance was assessed using a granulometric method in 74 subjects divided into 2 subgroups according to their dental status (normal dentition and complete dental wearers). Nutritional status of study subjects was analyzed with Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA).There were a significant association between wearing denture and Nutritional Status as assessed by MNA. Using this scale, a risk of malnutrition was found in 80% of subjects wearing complete denture and in 26% in the normal dentition sub group (p0.0001). There were also a positive and significant correlation between, the particle size distribution and masticated test food and nutritional status.Complete denture wearers are at greater risk of malnutrition than did subjects with normal dentition.

Many studies have shown that wearing of complete dentures impairs masticatory function. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of complete denture wearing and ageing on masticatory performance. Masticatory performance was assessed by a granulometric method on 110 subjects divided into 3 groups according to dental state and age. The results show edentulous subjects have a masticatory performance worse than their congeneric of the same age. Indeed, the median of the distribution of the size of the particles is more important at the carriers of prostheses than at the toothed old subjects (P0.0001). On the other hand the extent of the distribution does not vary significantly between these 2 groups of subjects. The parameters of the masticatory performance do not vary in a statistically significant way between the old subjects and the young controls. There is thus no significant effect of the age on the parameters of the performance masticatory.

Background: Peripheral nerve stimulation is used in both clinical and fundamental research for therapy and exploration. At present, non-invasive peripheral nerve stimulation still lacks the penetration depth to reach deep nerve targets and the stimulation focality to offer selectivity. It is therefore rarely employed as the primary selected nerve stimulation method. We have previously demonstrated that a new stimulation technique, temporal interference stimulation, can overcome depth and focality issues., Methods: Here, we implement a novel form of temporal interference, bilateral temporal interference stimulation, for bilateral hypoglossal nerve stimulation in rodents and humans. Pairs of electrodes are placed alongside both hypoglossal nerves to stimulate them synchronously and thus decrease the stimulation amplitude required to activate hypoglossal-nerve-controlled tongue movement., Results: Comparing bilateral temporal interference stimulation with unilateral temporal interference stimulation, we show that it can elicit the same behavioral and electrophysiological responses at a reduced stimulation amplitude. Traditional transcutaneous stimulation evokes no response with equivalent amplitudes of stimulation., Conclusions: During first-in-man studies, temporal interference stimulation was found to be well-tolerated, and to clinically reduce apnea-hypopnea events in a subgroup of female patients with obstructive sleep apnea. These results suggest a high clinical potential for the use of temporal interference in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea and other diseases as a safe, effective, and patient-friendly approach., Trial Registration: The protocol was conducted with the agreement of the International Conference on Harmonisation Good Clinical Practice (ICH GCP), applicable United States Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) and followed the approved BRANY IRB File # 22-02-636-1279., (© 2023. Electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves is a cornerstone of bioelectronic medicine. Effective ways to accomplish peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) noninvasively without surgically implanted devices are enabling for fundamental research and clinical translation. Here, it is demonstrated how relatively high-frequency sine-wave carriers (3 kHz) emitted by two pairs of cutaneous electrodes can temporally interfere at deep peripheral nerve targets. The effective stimulation frequency is equal to the offset frequency (0.5 - 4 Hz) between the two carriers. This principle of temporal interference nerve stimulation (TINS) in vivo using the murine sciatic nerve model is validated. Effective actuation is delivered at significantly lower current amplitudes than standard transcutaneous electrical stimulation. Further, how flexible and conformable on-skin multielectrode arrays can facilitate precise alignment of TINS onto a nerve is demonstrated. This method is simple, relying on the repurposing of existing clinically-approved hardware. TINS opens the possibility of precise noninvasive stimulation with depth and efficiency previously impossible with transcutaneous techniques., (© 2022 The Authors. - Abstract
Introduction: Neurostimulation applied from deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes is an effective therapeutic intervention in patients suffering from intractable drug-resistant epilepsy when resective surgery is contraindicated or failed. Inhibitory DBS to suppress seizures and associated epileptogenic biomarkers could be performed with high-frequency stimulation (HFS), typically between 100 and 165 Hz, to various deep-seated targets, such as the Mesio-temporal lobe (MTL), which leads to changes in brain rhythms, specifically in the hippocampus. The most prominent alterations concern high-frequency oscillations (HFOs), namely an increase in ripples, a reduction in pathological Fast Ripples (FRs), and a decrease in pathological interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs)., Materials and Methods: In the current study, we use Temporal Interference (TI) stimulation to provide a non-invasive DBS (130 Hz) of the MTL, specifically the hippocampus, in both mouse models of epilepsy, and scale the method using human cadavers to demonstrate the potential efficacy in human patients. Simulations for both mice and human heads were performed to calculate the best coordinates to reach the hippocampus., Results: This non-invasive DBS increases physiological ripples, and decreases the number of FRs and IEDs in a mouse model of epilepsy. Similarly, we show the inability of 130 Hz transcranial current stimulation (TCS) to achieve similar results. We therefore further demonstrate the translatability to human subjects via measurements of the TI stimulation vs. TCS in human cadavers. Results show a better penetration of TI fields into the human hippocampus as compared with TCS., Significance: These results constitute the first proof of the feasibility and efficiency of TI to stimulate at depth an area without impacting the surrounding tissue. The data tend to show the sufficiently focal character of the induced effects and suggest promising therapeutic applications in epilepsy., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2022 Acerbo, Jegou, Luff, Dzialecka, Botzanowski, Missey, Ngom, Lagarde, Bartolomei, Cassara, Neufeld, Jirsa, Carron, Grossman and Williamson.)

Objective: Describe the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of vesicovaginal fistula (VVF)., Patients and Methods: We conducted a retrospective descriptive study of all cases of VVF secondary to hysterectomy. The following parameters were studied: age, parity, indication for hysterectomy, risk factors, the consultation period, the anatomical type of VVF, the paraclinical, the surgical approach and results of the cure., Results: Fourteen cases were identified over 10 years. The postoperative course was uneventful in 11 patients (78%) but marked by vesicocutaneous fistula, parietal suppuration and one failure., Conclusion: In this short series of post-hysterectomy VVF treated by laparotomia, we observed a rate of cure satisfying in spite of an important psychosocial morbidity., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Masson SAS. - Abstract
Two nociceptive tests were applied to three groups of male rats (n=46) and three groups of female rats (n=46), that were gonadectomised (n=17), sham-operated (n=15) or intact (n=14). Each rat in each group received a local subcutaneous injection of formalin in the upper lip and in the hindpaw. Upper lip injection resulted in an increased occurrence of upper lip rubbing for more than 45 min and hindpaw injection resulted in an increased occurrence of hindpaw licking for about 1h. A role of ovarian hormones was also suggested after immunostaining of oestrogen receptors in the lamina II of Caudalis subnucleus of the trigeminal sensory complex and cervical (C1-C2) spinal dorsal horn. The number of cells expressing oestrogen receptors displayed a small (13.6%) but significant (P=0.037) increase in ovariectomised compared with sham-operated rats.
