This study investigated use of information and communication technologies and perceived job performance of university libraries’ personnel in Oyo State, Nigeria. The descriptive research design of the survey type was adopted for this study. The university libraries’ personnel in Oyo State, Nigeria formed the population of the study using purposive sampling technique. A total of 219 questionnaires were distributed across the universities with a retrieval success of 187 copies, representing 85.4% return rate. Data were analysed using percentages and Pearson Product Moment Correlation analysis. The findings of this study revealed that preparing reports (mean=3.13), scanning of documents (mean=3.05), and sending and receiving e-mail messages (mean=3.06) were the major purposes of use of ICTs by the university libraries’ personnel. Findings revealed that computer (mean=5.96), telephone (mean=5.95), and photocopiers were the major ICTs used daily. Findings also revealed that llimited budget for the library (mean=3.09) was the major challenge to the use of ICTs by the university libraries’ personnel. Findings revealed that the level of perceived job performance of university libraries’ personnel in Oyo State, Nigeria is high (mean=98.26); and there is no significant relationship between the use of ICTs by the university libraries’ personnel and their perceived job performance (Df= 185, N= 187, r= .052, P > 0.05). It was recommended that the library personnel should keep updating themselves with new trends of ICTs. This will be useful in the provision of library services and to keep developing the library to suit that of the present 21st century library.

This study investigates the preservation and conservation of serials collection in selected academic libraries in Oyo State, Nigeria. Relevant literature on the concept of serials, importance of serials in academic library, preservation and conservation of serials, methods of preservation and conservation of serials, importance of preservation and conservation of serials, factors affecting the preservation and conservation of serials was reviewed. The descriptive research design of the survey type was adopted for this study. The study population consisted of two hundred and fifteen (215) library personnel’s in the three selected academic libraries. The population of the study consists of para-professional and professional librarians. Data were collected using questionnaire. Data collected, were analysed using simple percentages, mean and frequency distribution methods. The study provides answers to seven research questions posed. The result of the study revealed that the three libraries recruited more male staff than their female counterpart. It was revealed that Journal, Magazines and Newspapers among others were the types of serial materials that are available and most frequently consulted; preserved and conserved in the selected academic libraries. The study also revealed that prone to vandalism, lack of knowledge and skills, theft and mutilation were reasons why serial materials are not available for use in the selected academic libraries. The study revealed that conditions for preserving and conserving serials were disallowing bags and coats into the serial section, maintaining vigilance and regular housekeeping among others. Microfilming, Fumigation exercise and Disaster preparedness were the major methods adopted to preserve serials. The study also revealed that the selected academic libraries have preservation and conservation policy and the measures put in place to contain emergency situation were provision of fire alarms and fire extinguisher. The study investigates library advocacy on the social media- what works. Survey research method was adopted for the study; Librarians of University of Ibadan and Obafemi Awolowo University were selected for this study. Data collected were analyzed using simple percentages. The results reveal that LinkedIn (100.0%), Youtube (100.0%) and Google+ (93.7%) were the major types of social media used by librarians for advocacy. The findings also revealed that the advantages of using social media for advocacy of library and information resources and services by the Librarians were that social media is a platform to share professional networking (100.0%), is used for marketing and broadcasting library resources (100.0%) and social media are user-centered (100.0%).The findings further reveal that lack of social media skills (100.0%), network fluctuation (100.0%) and epileptic power supply (100.0%) were the major challenges the librarians encounter in the use of social media for advocacy of library and information resources. The study recommended that library management should develop a programme for library advocacy campaign and outreach for awareness which serves as a medium of marketing the library to prospective users. This study investigates the Information and Communication Technology use in book marketing by emerging indigenous Publishing firms and booksellers in Ibadan Metropolis. Relevant literature on Book Publishing: An Overview and Information Communication Technology use in book marketing was reviewed. The descriptive survey research which includes the causal-comparative (Ex-post-Facto) method of research design was adopted for this study. The study population consisted of sixty (60) staff (CEOs and the marketing staff of the seven Indigenous publishing firms and booksellers in Ibadan metropolis). Data collected, were analyzed using simple percentages. The study provides answers to six research questions posed. Findings showed that digital printing, Internet and Computers among others were the major ICTs available to the indigenous publishers and booksellers for book marketing. Findings also showed that Telephone/GSM, Computers, E-Mail, etcetera were the major types of Information Technology indigenous publishers and booksellers can access. Findings further showed that indigenous publishers and booksellers apply the use of ICT in their daily activities. Moreso, findings showed that ICTs are beneficial in carrying out duties as majority agreed that it is faster than manual. Findings also revealed that ICTs have favourable impact on publishing and book marketing as respondents agreed that it is a better ways of marketing books. Findings revealed that high cost, poor power supply, piracy, etc were the challenges of using ICT by indigenous publishers in book marketing. Based on these findings, the following were recommended: the emerging indigenous publishing houses and booksellers in Ibadan metropolis need to procure modern and adequate information and communication technologies and are also encouraged to create websites of their own and place adverts of their publications on the websites and other similar websites like Barnes and Noble, Amazons.com that sell books

This study investigates computer self-efficacy and perceived ease-of- use of personal digital assistants for academic activities by undergraduates in University of Ibadan. Relevant literature on academic activities of undergraduates, undergraduates Computer Self-efficacy, perceived ease-of-use of personal digital assistant and the challenges faced by undergraduates in the use of Personal Digital Assistant was reviewed. The descriptive survey research design of expo-factor was adopted for this study. The study population was determined using 2% of all the registered students in the university using stratified method. A total of 244 questionnaires were distributed, out of which 223 were returned and found valid. Data collected through the questionnaire, were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques, frequency counts and percentages. The study provides answers to five research questions posed. The result of the study revealed that the undergraduate students had high level of computer self-efficacy in the use of PDAs. It was revealed that the students can easily use PDA for learning. The study revealed that Android phones and Blackberry phones were the commonly used PDAs by students. It was also revealed that the major academic activities they use PDAs is for their projects, assignments and classwork. The study also revealed the barriers of using the PDAs by the undergraduates to be battery life power outages, accidental loss of data or damage of equipment and others. Based on these findings, the following were recommended: Organise workshop where undergraduates will undergo training at the point when they are newly admitted into the University so that they can acquire computer skills and develop high computer self-efficacy. There should be constant power supply within the university so that students could power their PDAs information technology devices in order to avoid accidental loss of data or damage of equipment and to maximally use PDAs to enhanc

This study investigates the management and preservation of non-book materials at the University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University and Ladoke Akintola University. Relevant literature on the need for management, preservation, importance, challenges and factors responsible for deterioration of this non-book materials as well as remedies, suggestion and/or recommendations for improvement was reviewed. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study. The study population consisted of one hundred and forty one (141) staff in the three selected university libraries. The population of the study consists of para-professionals and professionals librarian. Data were collected using questionnaire and interview. Data collected, were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques, frequency counts and percentages. The study provides answers to five research questions posed. The result of the study revealed that the three libraries recruited more male staff than their female counterpart. It was revealed that the three libraries lacked adequate preservation policy, security guards, photocopy services as well as inadequate funding. It was also revealed that dust and particles serves as one of the greatest problem to management and preservation of non-book materials in the three selected university libraries. Based on these findings, the following were recommended: provision of working preservation policy, provision of functional air-conditioner to regulate the temperature and humidity of the storage area, an alternative power supply should be provided to check the constant power failure currently being experienced in the three universities libraries, training and retraining of staff through seminars, workshops or short courses in management and preservation; adequate funding should be provided especially for preservation programmes.
