In order to meet decarbonization goals, the number of large-scale solar (LSS) facilities in the US is expected to increase considerably. The advantages of LSS over fossil-fueled power generation are numerous and well documented. However, residents living nearby proposed and existing LSS sites have voiced a number of concerns about LSS, including its possible impacts to farmland and agricultural production, biodiversity, stormwater runoff, home and property values, as well as concerns about solar panels' toxicity and safety. While rapid expansion of LSS currently relies on officials permitting and residents being willing to host these systems, the appetite for LSS in some communities may be waning. Here we examine the perceived benefits and burdens of recent LSS developments, conducting 54 interviews with a broad set of stakeholders including residents, officials and developers at seven LSS sites across the US. We focus on identifying residents' most common concerns regarding LSS systems across states, site types, landscapes and ownership structures. We find concerns are associated with either LSS development processes or impacts, and center on the type and amount of information provided, the community's influence over project design, the efficacy of community subscription efforts, as well as projects' economic, environmental, and visual and landscape impacts. Importantly, we also investigate strategies that have been employed to improve perceptions and project outcomes, which include increasing in-person engagement, more explicit discussion of project tradeoffs, third-party intermediaries acting as community champions, and explicit requirements for meaningful local economic benefits.

Australia’s National Feral Pig Action Plan 2021-2031 is the first national strategy to reduce the extensive and diverse impacts caused by feral pigs to Australia’s environmental, agricultural, cultural and social assets by actively suppressing feral pig populations over time. Its development was instigated in response to growing threats of an exotic disease incursion, particularly African swine fever to the Australian pork industry. It provides a national framework for alignment of state, regional and local strategic feral pig management plans. The Plan was endorsed by Australia’s National Biosecurity Committee in October 2021 and aims to encourage land managers to work together in coordinated groups on a landscape scale, cross tenure basis, and strategically apply the most appropriate combinations of best practice management methods for their region (National Feral Pig Action Plan 2021). Its 10-year time frame reflects the long time required to reduce impacts from feral pigs, and their populations, as well as the enormity of the task. Many stakeholders, including governments, agricultural industries, natural resource management organisations, universities, Indigenous organisations, private land managers and not for profit environmental conservation managers are being engaged to support the Plan’s implementation. In Australia, how feral pig management is being undertaken needs to shift from being fragmented, ad hoc and reactive to be more coordinated, collaborative, strategic, and proactive; with activities supported by strong and trusted partnerships between all land managers. This paper discusses several initiatives being undertaken to support the implementation of the National Feral Pig Action Plan 2021-2031. These initiatives are principally directed at improving the efficacy and efficiency of on-ground best practice management actions by land managers by influencing practice and behaviour change and undertaking monitoring to fill significant data and knowledge gaps.

The Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change represents the state of knowledge of anthropogenic disruption to the climate system, its diverse ecosystem and societal impacts, and the imperative for and challenges of mitigation and adaptation responses. It is foundational for global climate policymaking. This paper examines the place of tourism in AR6 and reviews its key findings for tourism's future. Overall, tourism related content declined relative to previous assessments. While notable improvements in content occurred for Africa, visible knowledge gaps remain in the tourism growth regions of South America, Middle East, and South Asia. There remains limited discussion of many impacts, and very limited understanding of integrated impacts and the effectiveness of adaptation strategies at the destination scale. The contribution of tourism to global emissions was omitted, however tourism was discussed in the context of luxury emissions and just transitions. Tourism is repeatedly identified in solution space discussions, particularly for ecosystem protection, but without consideration of the future of tourism in a rapidly decarbonizing and climate disrupted economy. With only 21% of published climate change and tourism literature in the AR6 review period cited, tourism academics should elevate tourism content and engagement in future assessments. Climate change will have profound implications for North America's tourism industry, which is one of the largest tourism markets globally with respect to international tourism arrivals (146 million) and receipts (US$246 billion). This article provides a critical overview of regional tourism and climate change research published in academic journals following the IPCC's Fifth Assessment Report (AR5). This article highlights the differential climate risks and opportunities by impact type (e.g. temperature, precipitation, extreme weather, sea level rise, ecosystem change) for all available market segments (e.g. winter sports, beach, parks, and fishing). A synthesis of studies that estimate sectoral carbon emissions and the risk of not transitioning to a net-zero future are also explored, including an overview of national climate policies and decarbonization strategies. However, many children are not breastfed the recommended duration, with those from disadvantaged backgrounds more likely to cease breastfeeding early.Investigate the association between duration of any breastfeeding and body mass index (BMI) and estimate the health, economic and equity impacts of increasing breastfeeding duration to at least 6 months.We modelled the association between any breastfeeding duration and BMI at age 6/7 years, using a nationally representative cohort of 3935 Australian children (survey weighted to 221 103 children). We then used a simulation model to predict the impact of increasing breastfeeding duration to at least 6 months in all children on prevalence of overweight (including obesity) and associated healthcare costs to age 16/17 years.Achieving breastfeeding duration of at least 6 months could prevent 2933 cases of overweight at age 16/17 years, translating to healthcare cost‐savings of AUD $4.29 million. Although most cases (68%) would come from low socio‐economic backgrounds this would make only a minor difference in reducing inequalities.Efforts to support increased breastfeeding duration could result in reduced prevalence of overweight and obesity and save healthcare costs, however, additional action would be required to improve equity. Due to the rapid destruction and disappearance of villages caused by mass urbanisation in China over the past decades, the Chinese government launched in the 1990s a nationwide ‘village conservation project.’ Villages are officially viewed as a fundamental component of Chinese society, integrating essential elements of Chinese heritage and culture. Consequently, the government has created multiple officially recognised lists to restore, protect, and showcase traditional villages, such as wenwu baohu danwei (cultural relics protection units), lishi wenhua mingcun (historical and cultural villages), chuantong cunluo (traditional villages), xiangcun lvyou zhongdiancun (rural tourism key villages), and meili yiju cunzhuang (beautiful and livable villages). By examining the implementation process of this ‘village conservation project’, this study reveals the motivations and impacts of the Chinese government’s efforts in listing villages for conservation and development. Background: There are limited tools to measure the burden of disease and effectiveness of medical/surgical interventions in patients with cryptoglandular fistulas. The aim of this study was to explore concepts that are relevant and important to patients with complex cryptoglandular fistulas (CCF) and to develop a patient-centred, disease-specific, patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) to assess symptom burden and impacts of CCF. Methods: A targeted literature review was conducted, followed by one-to-one telephone interviews with five colorectal surgeons (USA, n = 3; UK, n = 1; Spain, n = 1) and 20 US adult patients with CCF to inform the development of a conceptual model and a CCF-specific PROM. The targeted literature review informed the development of the preliminary conceptual model and identified a PROM in the literature that was used as a reference to generate the draft CCF-specific PROM. The colorectal surgeon interviews provided insights on the experience of patients with CCF to refine the conceptual model, formulate probing questions for use in patient interviews, and to develop the draft CCF-specific PROM. Patients' descriptions of their experiences with symptoms and the impacts on their lives and evaluation of the draft CCF-specific PROM in concept elicitation and cognitive interviews were used to develop the final conceptual model and final CCF-specific PROM. Results: Ten symptoms (odour, pain during bowel movement, abscess, post-operative pain, discharge/drainage/leakage, anal/perianal pain, inflammation/swelling, skin irritation, bleeding and itchiness) and 11 impacts (discomfort, inability to exercise, embarrassment, difficulty sitting, worry about disease, adapted life to maintain hygiene, negatively impacted social life/isolation, inability to perform daily activities, reduced interest in sex, negatively impacted intimate relationships and negatively impacted mood) were reported as most salient by patients. The patient experience, clinician perspective, and literature review provided input to item generation. Evaluation of relevance and patient understanding through cognitive interviews with patients provided evidence for the content validity of the new patient-reported outcome measure: the 20-item Complex Cryptoglandular Fistula Questionnaire™ (CCFQ-20™). Conclusion: The CCFQ-20™ is a new clinician-guided, patient-validated, disease-specific patient-reported outcome measure that measures disease impact and quality of life in patients with CCF. Improper solid waste management is one of the causes of environmental and health problems in many cities worldwide. It is in this context that the study aimed to determine the solid waste management strategies used in Amaveni suburbs in Kwekwe, Zimbabwe and assess the health and environmental problems associated with the solid waste management strategies used in Amaveni. Researchers used a mixed method design in which quantitative and qualitative data was collected at the same time. Semi –structured interviews, field observations and questionnaires were used to collect data. The sample comprised 380 Amaveni residents, 3 Kwekwe City employees and one Environmental Management Agency (EMA) official. Qualitative data was analyzed thematically while quantitative data was analyzed using inferential statistics. Open dumping and open burning were the dominant solid waste management strategies in Amaveni. The main health problems identified were cholera and malaria. Air pollution, water pollution and loss of urban beauty were the main environmental problems identified. From the findings it can be concluded that solid waste management strategies used in Amaveni were associated with many health and environmental problems and as a result sustainable solid waste management was proposed. In this paper, the effects of the rapid advancement of generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) in higher education (HE) are discussed. A mixed exploratory research approach was employed to understand these impacts, combining analysis of current research trends and students' perceptions of the effects of Gen AI tools in academia. Through bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review, 64 publications (indexed in the SCOPUS and Web of Science databases) were examined, highlighting Gen AI's disruptive effect on the pedagogical aspects of HE. The impacts identified by the literature were compared with the perceptions held by computer science students of two different HE institutions (HEIs) on the topic. An exploratory study was developed based on the application of a questionnaire to a group of 112 students. The results suggest that while Gen AI can enhance academic work and learning feedback, it requires appropriate pedagogical support to foster critical, ethical, and digital literacy competencies. Students demonstrate awareness of both the risks and benefits associated with Gen AI in academic settings. The research concludes that failing to recognize and effectively use Gen AI in HE impedes educational progress and the adequate preparation of citizens and workers to think and act in an AI-mediated world. Maritime transport is vulnerable to disruptions which could threaten the resilience performance of maritime businesses. Consequently, the management of disruptions has gained significant attention from academics and the industry. The objective of this study is to review and consolidate academic research on disruption management in maritime shipping. A systematic review is performed on the search engine, Scopus. The review findings highlight (1) major categories of disruptions; (2) impacts of disruptions, which include social and economic impact and operational challenges; and (3) disruption management strategies, which cover technology, policies and regulations, service quality improvement, capacity management, collaboration with stakeholders as well as continuous training and education. The study contributes to the literature by providing a timely consolidation of the increasing focus on disruption management and maritime resilience. The results offer some implications for government authorities, policymakers, and maritime industry players to ensure the shipping industry continues to be resilient and versatile to thrive in this dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing environment. BACKGROUND: Biological invasions are a leading cause of reductions in global biodiversity. Islands are particularly sensitive to invasions, which often result in cascading impacts throughout island communities. Wild pigs (Sus scrofa) are globally invasive and pose threats to numerous taxa and ecosystems, particularly for islands where they have contributed to declines of many endemic species. However, the impacts of wild pig diet on the flora and fauna remain understudied in many island systems. RESULTS: We used DNA metabarcoding of wild pig fecal samples to quantify the seasonal diet composition of wild pigs on three barrier islands in the southeastern United States. Wild pigs exhibited a diverse diet dominated by plants, but also including marine and terrestrial animals. The diet composition of plants varied seasonally and between islands. Consumption of invertebrates also changed seasonally, with a shift to coastal invertebrates, particularly crabs, in spring and summer. Vertebrates were found in <10% of samples, but spanned broad taxa including amphibians, fish, mammals, and reptiles. Species consumed by wild pigs indicate that wild pigs use a variety of habitats within barrier islands for foraging, including maritime forests, saltmarshes, and beaches. CONCLUSIONS: An observed shift to beach foraging during sea turtle nesting season suggests wild pigs have potential to hinder nesting success on islands without established management programs. These findings provide insight into the diverse diets of wild pigs on barrier islands and highlight the need for removal of wild pigs from sensitive island ecosystems because of their potential impacts to native plant and animal communities. © 2024 The Authors. Land intensive use reflects the spatial structure, agglomeration characteristics, and internal mechanisms of urban economic, social, and ecological system development, significantly impacting urban resilience. Based on panel data from 287 cities in China from 2010 to 2020, this paper measures the levels of land intensive use and urban resilience, and empirically examines the impact mechanism of land intensive use on urban resilience through baseline regression and panel quantile regression. The results reveal that: (1) During the study period, China's urban land intensive use level has significantly improved. The land intensive use level shows a trend of "the strong become stronger, and the weak are always weak" and "high in the east and low in the west" spatial differentiation, while the urban resilience level showed a trend of accelerated "catching up" of low-resilience cities towards high-resilience cities and "high in the east and low in the west" spatial differentiation as well. (2) Land intensive use significantly promotes effect on urban resilience, and the effect depends on different conditions. (3) Among all dimensions of land intensive use, both land input intensity and land use benefits significantly promote urban resilience, while land use intensity shows an insignificant effect. (4) The impact of land intensive use on urban resilience demonstrates significant scale heterogeneity and geographic regional heterogeneity. Based on these findings, the paper proposes relevant policy suggestions for land intensive use aimed at improving urban resilience, offering guidance for promoting high-quality land use and sustainable urban resilience development. Tigray, a small region in northern Ethiopia, has faced serious problems over the last three years. The COVID-19 pandemic-related lockdowns come first, followed by history's longest and most destructive war and siege. The brutal war wiped out millions of people and destroyed Tigray's infrastructure. The Pretoria agreement makes it seem necessary to reconstruct the damaged region. To this effect, proactive strategies are required to integrate environmental and social factors into development projects. Hence, this paper synthesizes the extent of environmental and social integration practices in development initiatives of the pre-war period in Tigray to draw lessons for postwar reconstruction. In this research, the environmental impact assessments of twenty-one multi-sector development projects as well as 2327 project proposals processed for environmental clearance in Tigray were used to analyze legislative promises and performances. According to this study, private and public sector development initiatives had weak commitments compared to projects with external pressure from development aid organizations. This can be attributed to a dearth of regulatory agency expertise, a lackluster legislative foundation, and questionable institutional autonomy. Moreover, the absence of a context-based land use plan, a lack of cluster-based integrated watershed management, and a failure to consider eco-services and cumulative impacts during project appraisal are some of the gaps identified. The formation and evolution of the South Pole‐Aitken (SPA) basin is critical to relating large impact basin formation and modification to lunar geophysical evolution. Most prior models of the SPA impact were conducted in 2D, making it difficult to compare model output to the 3D crustal structure and ejecta distribution. In order to better constrain the parameters of the SPA impactor and the expected post impact distribution of crust and ejecta, we conducted numerical simulations of the SPA impact in 3D. We tested a wide range of impact parameters and constrained model results with recent geophysical data. We found the crustal structure of the SPA basin is best fit by an oblique impact (30–45°) of a 350–400 km diameter projectile impacting at 12–16 km/s. The impact excavated material from as deep as 80–120 km, and ejecta was deposited in a butterfly pattern with a forbidden region uprange of the impact. Plain Language Summary: The South Pole‐Aitken (SPA) basin is the largest impact‐generated structure on the Moon. The large size of the basin (approximately 1,500–2,000 km in diameter) implies the impact that generated the basin globally influenced the early evolution of the Moon. In order to constrain the type of impact that formed the basin, we ran computer simulations of large projectiles (300–400 km in diameter) impacting the early lunar surface. We found the structure of the crust surrounding the basin best matches an impact of a 350–400 km diameter projectile (similar in scale to Saturn's moon Mimas) impacting the Moon with a velocity of 12–16 km per second. Our computer models show that the collision that generated the basin would have formed a non‐symmetrical distribution of impact ejecta, and excavated material from the lower crust and upper mantle. Our results constrain the type of impact that formed the SPA basin, and suggest that ejecta from the impact is prevalent at sites of current and future lunar exploration. Non‐native species can spread rapidly through aquatic ecosystems in association with both natural and anthropogenic mechanisms, but the relative importance of these two mechanisms in determining the spread of a species is not always clear. The red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) has been introduced to multiple continents, including waterbodies in the United States where both natural and anthropogenic dispersal are likely to have contributed to its current distribution. The present study combined comparisons of historical and contemporary distributions of P. clarkii and several high conservation priority crayfish species, regional field sampling, and microsatellite‐based genetic approaches from the Pee Dee River basin in North Carolina and South Carolina to understand the dispersal patterns of P. clarkii and its potential effects on native crayfishes. Field sampling and microsatellite analyses revealed widespread populations of P. clarkii throughout the study area with catchment‐specific patterns of population genetic structure, wherein more distinct genetic structures were found in the basin with historic aquaculture activities and a longer period of occurrence. The rapid spread of P. clarkii has occurred concurrently with extirpations of populations of native crayfishes, namely the Waccamaw crayfish (Procambarus braswelli), the Carolina Sandhills crayfish (Procambarus pearsei) and the coastal plain crayfish (Procambarus ancylus). The rapid spread of P. clarkii and coincident extirpation of native crayfishes calls for more extensive regulatory controls to help prevent the intentional or accidental release of non‐native crayfishes through aquaculture practices, bait releases, the pet trade and the environmental education industry. We consider a class of finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional locally coupled systems of periodic Hill-type equations with impacts. First, for finite dimensional systems, with assumptions of superlinearity on the restoring forces and boundedness on the coupling terms, we show the twist properties of the Poincaré maps on the suitably large torus in each sub-phase plane. Then, by a high-dimensional zero point theorem, it is proved the existence of infinitely many symmetric harmonic and subharmonic bouncing solutions. Second, we consider an infinite-dimensional system as a limit case of a sequence of finite-dimensional systems. By a detailed discussions for taking limits, it is proved that a sequence of even and periodic bouncing solutions of some finite-dimensional systems can converge to an even and periodic bouncing solution of the infinite-dimensional system. This paper aims to make a conceptual and empirical contribution to our understanding of the effects of extra-regional assets and knowledge inflow, through mergers and acquisitions (M&A), in different types of regions. We revealed that the M&A market is not geographically homogeneous, and regions differ in all aspects of the M&A market: relative position, local density and foreign attractiveness, the same as in the M&A intensity. This heterogeneity is not random but follows a spatial pattern and differences in economic fundamentals of regions, but at the same time, there is no linear relationship between economic performance and M&A performance. The regional M&A market characteristics can explain differences in the impacts of M&A transactions on the economy, especially in the exit rate of companies after acquisition and in the change of employment. The impacts of M&A on the regional economy generally do not differ by sector of the acquired company. However, some patterns show that the negative effects are more present after acquisitions of firms in tradeable sectors in the less developed regions, whereas in the stronger regions, the most vulnerable sectors belong to the part of the economy which offers mundane, but occasionally purchased (and thus substitutable) goods. Simple Summary: Invasive wasps can have huge impacts on global apiculture. Here, we developed 12 range dynamic models to globally calibrate the future range dynamics and invasion hotspots of 12 major invasive Vespidae wasp species through a unified approach and evaluated their future impacts on apiculture worldwide. We detected increases in their habitat suitability in most parts of the globe and substantial range expansions, both mainly driven by future climatic changes. We also identified those invasive wasp species projected to have the largest potential ranges, highest range expansion ratios, and largest centroid shifts, as well as the invasion hotspots of all major invasive wasp species in the future. In summary, the increasing habitat suitability and range dynamics of invasive wasps indicate that global apiculture will likely face greater adverse impacts in the future. Therefore, our study provides important and novel information for combatting invasions of wasps and mitigating their expected impacts on global apiculture. Until now, no study has examined the future range dynamics of major invasive wasp species to assess their future impacts on global apiculture. Here, we developed 12 species distribution models to calibrate the future range dynamics of 12 major invasive Vespidae wasp species under a unified framework. An increase in their habitat suitability was identified in more than 75% of global land. Substantial range expansions were detected for all 12 species, and they were primarily induced by future climate changes. Notably, Polistes dominula and Vespa crabro had the largest potential ranges under all scenarios, suggesting their greater impact on global apiculture. Polistes chinensis and Vespa velutina nigrithorax had the highest range expansion ratios, so they warrant more urgent attention than the other species. Polistes versicolor and P. chinensis are expected to exhibit the largest centroid shifts, suggesting that substantial shifts in prioritizing regions against their invasions should be made. Europe and the eastern part of the USA were future invasion hotspots for all major invasive wasp species, suggesting that apiculture might face more pronounced threats in these regions than in others. The seascapes of Small Island Developing States are at risk from anthropogenic pollution. To implement effective seascape management, there is a need to better understand the threats to the seascape, subsequent impacts and associated stakeholder perceptions. This study used a systematic literature review, online survey and follow-up interviews to identify the main threats and impacts to the seascape and analyze associated perceptions of stakeholders, using Mauritius as a case study. The key threats were found to be oil spills, anthropogenic marine debris, coastal development, tourism, poor environmental management, and inadequate enforcement of legislation. Associated perception data showed a high awareness of increasing pollution, some awareness of the impacts and a general consensus that the seascape is poorly managed. Stricter law enforcement and increased education were suggested by stakeholders to improve seascape management. The Produce Safety Alliance grower training has been offered since 2016. Prior to the pandemic, the course was offered exclusively in‐person. During the pandemic, trainers were allowed to offer the course remotely. The effectiveness of in‐person and remote delivery options was compared utilizing four methods: course evaluations completed at the training; a pre‐ and post‐training knowledge assessment; a 1‐year follow‐up survey; and focus groups with course trainers. All methods, except the focus groups, were used as evaluation tools starting before and continuing during the pandemic. On the course evaluations, remote delivery and in‐person participants rated their satisfaction with the training and their confidence in their ability to make changes at the same high rate. The knowledge assessment found remote delivery participants scored higher on the posttest than in‐person participants when controlling for pretest score (p < 0.001); the effect size was between low and medium (ηp2 = 0.025). On the follow‐up survey, remote delivery participants reported making changes to food safety practices or infrastructure at a higher rate than in‐person participants (68% vs. 53%, respectively, Χ2 (1, N = 700) = 6.372, p = 0.012, Cramer's V = 0.012 (very low)). There were demographic differences in educational level, job description, and number of years farming between the two populations. The focus group revealed advantages and disadvantages of both delivery methods, including internet availability, engagement activity, and course logistics and planning. Because no practical differences in outcome were measured between delivery methods and each had unique strengths, researchers recommend that educators should utilize both methods in the future. Practical Application: 1. When deciding between offering in‐person or synchronous virtual training, trainers can feel confident that both delivery methods result in positive experiences from participants, learning, and behavior change. 2. PSA trainers may choose to offer the training remotely to increase accessibility for people who live in areas where there may not be enough growers to warrant holding an in‐person training nearby, but should also consider that reliable high‐speed internet access may not be available to all. 3. Remote delivery trainings can be smoother by hosting remote delivery participants at local extension or other partner offices where high‐speed internet is available. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study synthesizes the current understanding of the hydrological, impact, and adaptation processes underlying drought‐to‐flood events (i.e., consecutive drought and flood events), and how they interact. Based on an analysis of literature and a global assessment of historic cases, we show how drought can affect flood risk and assess under which circumstances drought‐to‐flood interactions can lead to increased or decreased risk. We make a distinction between hydrological, socio‐economic and adaptation processes. Hydrological processes include storage and runoff processes, which both seem to mostly play a role when the drought is a multiyear event and when the flood occurs during the drought. However, which process is dominant when and where, and how this is influenced by human intervention needs further research. Processes related to socio‐economic impacts have been studied less than hydrological processes, but in general, changes in vulnerability seem to play an important role in increasing or decreasing drought‐to‐flood impacts. Additionally, there is evidence of increased water quality problems due to drought‐to‐flood events, when compared to drought or flood events by themselves. Adaptation affects both hydrological (e.g., through groundwater extraction) or socio‐economic (e.g., influencing vulnerability) processes. There are many examples of adaptation, but there is limited evidence of when and where certain processes occur and why. Overall, research on drought‐to‐flood events is scarce. To increase our understanding of drought‐to‐flood events we need more comprehensive studies on the underlying hydrological, socio‐economic, and adaptation processes and their interactions, as well as the circumstances that lead to the dominance of certain processes. The real estate market, also known as the property market, can be described as a set of submarkets where trading of property rights ranging from the purchase, development, ownership, management, rental, to sale of real estate and related properties investment for profit exist. Nigerian real estate sector has been greatly influenced by laws, policies as well as institutions in which it is meant to thrive overtime. Furthermore, these laws and policies have critical impacts on the future sector of real estate, recipient of public investment. Currently, a growing number of real estate investments are hampered by some of these government policies characterized by cumbersome regulations, ownership restrictions, and unpredictable changes in legislation. The study analysed the various government policies in real estate with a view to determining the impacts on property market. A structured questionnaire was used to obtain information from respondents in public and private organisations. The obtained information was examined using Weighted Mean Score, Logistic Regression and Factor Analysis. Factor Analsyis is used in data reduction to identify a large number of factors that explain most of the variance observed. The findings of this research shows that some of principal factors influencing performance of government policies on both the public and private perspective were: insufficient infrastructural amenities, shortage of skilled manpower, bureaucracies in land, ineffective project inspection and ineffective government programme and policies, poor distribution and allocation and ineffective project inspection. Recent years have witnessed an increasing interest in large-scale agricultural land acquisitions in developing countries. The accompanying socio-economic implications have been areas of debate among politicians, policymakers and development agents. This paper argues that the traditional way of simulating the impacts of these investments in developing countries is misleading as the approach implies that the new investments are identical to the semi-subsistence way of farming that dominates agricultural practices in the host countries. In this study, we incorporate the peculiarity of large-scale agro-investments into an existing database for economy-wide models, i.e., social accounting matrix (SAM), and capture welfare and distributional outcomes properly. SAM-based multiplier models applied to Ethiopian data justify the need to account for the peculiarity of the investments in terms of production technology and their geographic distribution. Abstract Background There are limited tools to measure the burden of disease and effectiveness of medical/surgical interventions in patients with cryptoglandular fistulas. The aim of this study was to explore concepts that are relevant and important to patients with complex cryptoglandular fistulas (CCF) and to develop a patient-centred, disease-specific, patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) to assess symptom burden and impacts of CCF. Methods A targeted literature review was conducted, followed by one-to-one telephone interviews with five colorectal surgeons (USA, n = 3; UK, n = 1; Spain, n = 1) and 20 US adult patients with CCF to inform the development of a conceptual model and a CCF-specific PROM. The targeted literature review informed the development of the preliminary conceptual model and identified a PROM in the literature that was used as a reference to generate the draft CCF-specific PROM. The colorectal surgeon interviews provided insights on the experience of patients with CCF to refine the conceptual model, formulate probing questions for use in patient interviews, and to develop the draft CCF-specific PROM. Patients’ descriptions of their experiences with symptoms and the impacts on their lives and evaluation of the draft CCF-specific PROM in concept elicitation and cognitive interviews were used to develop the final conceptual model and final CCF-specific PROM. Results Ten symptoms (odour, pain during bowel movement, abscess, post-operative pain, discharge/drainage/leakage, anal/perianal pain, inflammation/swelling, skin irritation, bleeding and itchiness) and 11 impacts (discomfort, inability to exercise, embarrassment, difficulty sitting, worry about disease, adapted life to maintain hygiene, negatively impacted social life/isolation, inability to perform daily activities, reduced interest in sex, negatively impacted intimate relationships and negatively impacted mood) were reported as most salient by patients. The patient experience, clinician perspective, and literature review provided input to item generation. Evaluation of relevance and patient understanding through cognitive interviews with patients provided evidence for the content validity of the new patient-reported outcome measure: the 20-item Complex Cryptoglandular Fistula Questionnaire™ (CCFQ-20™). Conclusion The CCFQ-20™ is a new clinician-guided, patient-validated, disease-specific patient-reported outcome measure that measures disease impact and quality of life in patients with CCF.

Abstract Improper solid waste management is one of the causes of environmental and health problems in many cities worldwide. It is in this context that the study aimed to determine the solid waste management strategies used in Amaveni suburbs in Kwekwe, Zimbabwe and assess the health and environmental problems associated with the solid waste management strategies used in Amaveni. Researchers used a mixed method design in which quantitative and qualitative data was collected at the same time. Semi –structured interviews, field observations and questionnaires were used to collect data. The sample comprised 380 Amaveni residents, 3 Kwekwe City employees and one Environmental Management Agency (EMA) official. Qualitative data was analyzed thematically while quantitative data was analyzed using inferential statistics. Open dumping and open burning were the dominant solid waste management strategies in Amaveni. The main health problems identified were cholera and malaria. Air pollution, water pollution and loss of urban beauty were the main environmental problems identified. From the findings it can be concluded that solid waste management strategies used in Amaveni were associated with many health and environmental problems and as a result sustainable solid waste management was proposed.
