Abstract: In this paper, a new algorithm for the computation of workspace boundaries of continuum parallel robots (CPRs) is proposed. State-of-the-art techniques are mainly based on time-consuming joint-space discretization approaches or task-space discretization algorithms, and only a few approaches are dedicated to the computation of workspace boundaries. The proposed approach for the computation of the workspace boundaries is based on i) a free-space exploration strategy and ii) a boundary reconstruction algorithm. The former is exploited to identify an initial workspace boundary location (exterior, interior boundaries, and holes), while the latter is used to reconstruct the complete boundary surface. Moreover, the algorithm is designed to be employed with CPRs modelling strategies based on general discretization assumptions, in order to increase its applicability for various scopes. Our method is compared with two state-of-the-art algorithms in four case studies to validate the results and to establish its merits and limitations.

Abstract: International audience; Weathering phenomena are ubiquitous in urban environments, where it is easy to observe severely degraded old buildings as a result of water penetration. Despite being an important part of any realistic city, this kind of phenomenon has received little attention from the Computer Graphics community compared to stains resulting from biological or flow effects on the building exteriors. In this paper, we present physically-inspired deep weathering effects, where the penetration of humidity (i.e., water particles) and its interaction with a building's internal structural elements result in large, visible degradation effects. Our implementation is based on a particle-based propagation model for humidity propagation, coupled with a spring-based interaction simulation that allows chemical interactions, like the formation of rust, to deform and destroy a building's inner structure. To illustrate our methodology, we show a collection of deep degradation effects applied to urban models involving the creation of rust or of ice within walls.

Abstract: International audience; Pseudo-Haptic techniques, or visuo-haptic illusions, leverage user’s visual dominance over haptics to alter the users’perception. As they create a discrepancy between virtual and physical interactions, these illusions are limited to a perceptual threshold. Many haptic properties have been studied using pseudo-haptic techniques, such as weight, shape or size. In this paper, we focus on estimating the perceptual thresholds for pseudo-stiffness in a virtual reality grasping task. We conducted a user study (n = 15) where we estimated if compliance can be induced on a non-compressible tangible object and to what extent. Our results show that (1) compliance can be induced in a rigid tangible object and that (2) pseudo-haptics can simulate beyond 24 N/cm stiffness (k ≥ 24N/cm, between a gummy bear and a raisin, up to rigid objects). Pseudo-stiffness efficiency is (3) enhanced by the objects’ scales, but mostly (4) correlated to the user input force. Taken altogether, our results offer novel opportunities to simplify the design of future haptic interfaces, and extend the haptic properties of passive props in VR.

Abstract: International audience; Teleoperating robotic manipulators can be complicated and cognitively demanding for the human operator. Despite these difficulties, teleoperated robotic systems are still popular in several industrial applications, e.g., remote handling of hazardous material. In this context, we present a novel haptic shared control method for minimising the manipulator torque effort during remote manipulative actions in which an operator is assisted in selecting a suitable grasping pose for then displacing an object along a desired trajectory. Minimising torque is important because it reduces the system operating cost and extends the range of objects that can be manipulated. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in a series of representative real-world pick-and-place experiments as well as in a human subjects study. The reported results prove the effectiveness of our shared control vs. a standard teleoperation approach. We also find that haptic-only guidance performs better than visualonly guidance, although combining them together leads to the best overall results.

Abstract: International audience; The paper proposes a new real-time motion planning technique for an autonomous mobile robot that is able to find a collision-free path and a corresponding time-optimal trajectory while taking into account limits on the actuator capacities and constraints from the wheel-ground adhesion. The proposed technique includes two sub-modules. The first one, an optimal path planner, is based on the discretization of the robot workspace and dynamic programming principle. It allows finding the shortest path in the robot environment to avoid obstacles and reach the robot target. The second one, an optimal trajectory generator, operates with the discretized robot state-space and also employs dynamic programming techniques. It produces a time-optimal motion along the obtained path, which may include numerous regular and singular trajectory sections caused by the simultaneous application of actuator and wheel-ground adhesion constraints. To adapt this technique to real-time implementation, a moving window strategy is presented that allows regularly updating the robot motion profile in a dynamic environment. The advantages of the developed technique and its suitability for real-time control are illustrated by experimental studies implemented on a car-like mobile robot.

Abstract: International audience; This article describes the robotic assistive technologies developed for users of electrically powered wheelchairs, within the framework of the European Union’s Interreg ADAPT (Assistive Devices for Empowering Disabled People Through Robotic Technologies) project. In particular, special attention is devoted to the integration of advanced sensing modalities and the design of new shared control algorithms. In response to the clinical needs identified by our medical partners, two novel smart wheelchairs with complementary capabilities and a virtual reality (VR)-based wheelchair simulator have been developed. These systems have been validated via extensive experimental campaigns in France and the United Kingdom.

Abstract: International audience; Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are over-stressed to accelerate High-Performance Computing applications and are used to accelerate Deep Neural Networks in several domains where they have a life expectancy of many years. These conditions expose the GPUs hardware to (premature) aging, causing permanent faults to arise after the usual end-of-manufacturing test. Techniques to assess the impact of permanent faults in GPUs are then strongly required, thus allowing to estimate the reliability risk and to possibly mitigate it. In this paper, we present a method to evaluate the effects of permanent faults affecting the GPU scheduler and control units, which are the most peculiar and stressed resources, along with the first figures that allow quantifying these effects. We characterize over 5.83x10^5 permanent fault effects in the scheduler and controllers of a gate-level GPU model. Then, we map the observed error categories in software by instrumenting the code of 13 applications and two convolutional neural networks, injecting more than 1.65x10^5 permanent errors. Our two-level fault injection strategy reduces the evaluation time from hundreds of years of gate-level evaluation to hundreds of hours.We found that faults in the GPU parallelism management units can modify the opcode, the addresses, and the status of thread(s) and warp(s). The large majority (up to 99%) of these hardware permanent errors impacts the running software execution. Abstract: International audience; When an attacker targets a system, he aims to remain undetected as long as possible. He must therefore avoid performing actions that are characteristic of an identified malicious behavior. One way to avoid detection is to only perform actions on the system that appear legitimate. That is, actions that are allowed because of the system configuration or actions that are possible by diverting the use of legitimate services. This article presents and experiments AWARE (Attacks in Windows Architectures REvealed), a defensive tool able to query a Windows system and build a directed graph highlighting possible stealthily attack paths that an attacker could use during the propagation phase of an attack campaign. These attack paths only rely on legitimate system actions and the use of Living-Off-The-Land binaries. AWARE also proposes a range of corrective measures to prevent these attack paths.; Lorsqu'un attaquant cible un système, son objectif est de rester indétecté le plus longtemps possible. Il doit donc éviter d'effectuer des actions caractéristiques d'un comportement malveillant identifié. Une façon d'éviter la détection est de n'effectuer que des actions sur le système qui semblent légitimes. C'est-à-dire des actions autorisées en raison de la configuration du système ou des actions possibles en détournant l'utilisation de services légitimes. Cet article présente et expérimente AWARE (Attacks in Windows Architectures REvealed), un outil défensif capable d'interroger un système Windows et de construire un graphe dirigé mettant en évidence les chemins d'attaque furtifs possibles qu'un attaquant pourrait utiliser lors de la phase de propagation d'une campagne d'attaque. Abstract: International audience; Most classical SLAM systems rely on the static scene assumption, which limits their applicability in real world scenarios. Recent SLAM frameworks have been proposed to simultaneously track the camera and moving objects. However they are often unable to estimate the canonical pose of the objects and exhibit a low object tracking accuracy. To solve this problem we propose TwistSLAM++, a semantic, dynamic, SLAM system that fuses stereo images and LiDAR information. Using semantic information, we track potentially moving objects and associate them to 3D object detections in LiDAR scans to obtain their pose and size. Then, we perform registration on consecutive object scans to refine object pose estimation. Finally, object scans are used to estimate the shape of the object and constrain map points to lie on the estimated surface within the bundle adjustment. We show on classical benchmarks that this fusion approach based on multimodal information improves the accuracy of object tracking.

Abstract: International audience; Reducing the energy consumption of the global IT industry requires one to understand and optimize the large software infrastructures the modern data economy relies on. Among them are the data stream processing systems that are deployed in cloud data centers by companies, such as Twitter, to process billion of events per day in real time. However, studying the energy consumption of such infrastructures is difficult because they rely on a complex virtualized software ecosystem where attributing energy consumption to individual software components is a challenge, and because the space of possible configurations is large. We present GreenFlow, a principled methodology and tool designed to automate the deployment of energy measurement experiments for data stream processing systems in cloud environments. GreenFlow is designed to deliver reproducible results while remaining flexible enough to support a wide range of experiments. We illustrate its usage and show in particular that consolidating a DSP system in the smallest number of servers that are capable of processing it is an effective way to reduce energy consumption.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents the construction of a Knowledge Graph (KG) of Educational Resources (ER), where RDF reification is essential. The ERs are described based on the subjects they cover considering their relevance. RDF reification is used to incorporate this subject’s relevance. Multiple reification models with distinct syntax and performance implications for storage and query processing exist. This study aims to experimentally compare four statement-based reification models with four triplestores to determine the most pertinent choice for our KG. We built four versions of the KG. Each version has a distinct reification model, namely standard reification, singleton properties, named graphs, and RDF-star, which were obtained using RML mappings. Each of the four triplestores (Virtuoso, Jena, Oxigraph, and GraphDB) was setup four times (except for Virtuoso, which does not support RDF-star), and seven different SPARQL queries were experimentally evaluated. This study shows that standard reification and named graphs lead to good performance. It also shows that, in the particular context of the used KG, Virtuoso outperforms Jena, GraphDB, and Oxigraph in most queries. The recent specification of RDF-star and SPARQL-star sheds light on statement-level annotations. The empirical study reported in this paper contributes to the efforts towards the efficient usage of RDF reification. In addition, this paper shares the pipeline of the KG con- struction using standard semantic web technologies.

Abstract: One of the key questions about gene regulatory networks is how to predict complex dynamical properties based on the influence graph's topology. Earlier theoretical studies have identified conditions for complex dynamical properties, like multistability or oscillations, based on topological features, like the presence of a positive (negative) feedback loop. This work follows this path and aims to find a sufficient and necessary condition for the existence of a periodic attractor in 4-dimensional (4 genes) repressilators based on a discrete modeling framework under some dynamical assumptions. These networks are extensions of the widely studied 3-dimensional repressilator, which has been used in synthetic biology to produce synthetic oscillations. While other researchers have explored specific extensions of the 3-dimensional repressilator to improve synthetic oscillation control, our work investigates all 4-dimensional networks with only inhibitions. By uncovering new insights about periodic attractors in these small networks, our findings could aid the design of new synthetic oscillations. We search for condition for period attractor in an exhaustive manner with the guide of a decision tree model. Our major contributions include: 1) discovering that, with one exception, the relations between gene regulation thresholds do not impact the existence of periodic attractors in any of the influence graphs considered in this study; 2) identifying a sufficient and necessary condition of simple form for the existence of a periodic attractor when the exception is ignored; 3) identifying new topological features of influence graphs that are necessary for predicting the existence of periodic attractor in 4-dimensional repressilators.

Abstract: International audience; For a given data base T and a user query Q, the top-k answers are the k tuples from T that best match Q. The integration of a diversity constraint aims at avoiding returning redundant tuples, that are too similar one to another. This paper addresses the diversification question in the Query By Example setting, especially for approaches that can deal with possibly very different representative examples provided by the user. It proposes a new definition for diversity that depends on the query, in order to guarantee that the result set illustrates the diversity of the representative examples provided by the user, covering all components of the query. The paper proposes a numerical measure to assess diversity in that sense, an algorithm to identify such a diversified top-k set, optimising both the query satisfaction and the diversity measure, as well as its integration into a flexible querying approach.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we propose learning architectures to emulate the inverse dynamics step in motion analysis. Indeed, the in situ motion analysis of a work situation is often based on noisy and/or incomplete motion data (video, depth camera...), requiring the development of methods robust to these uncertainties. Our study focuses on the development and evaluation on reference data (opto-electronic motion capture) of a torque estimation tool for upper limbs. The system was trained to estimate joint torques for static and dynamic one-handed load carrying tasks, based on the estimated position of the joint centers, the mass carried and the mass of the subject. The generalizability of our learning models was tested in inter-subject and inter-task scenarios. The average RMSE (N.m) and the average nRMSE (%) metrics were computed for each type of learning architecture. In a future work, we aim at emulating noisy data as an input of the problem to emulate in situ conditions and improve the robustness of the approach.

Abstract: International audience; Unrolled optimization methods have emerged as a way to combine classical iterative optimization techniques with learned priors to efficiently solve image restoration problems. However, learning the regularization prior along the unrolled iterations requires intensive memory usage due to the deep explicit backpropagation, hence making the number of unrolled iterations usually small in practice. Inspired by deep equilibrium models, unrolling models with implicit backpropagation have been considered for solving this issue. Nevertheless, while these methods yield good restoration quality with reduced memory usage, the theory of implicit backpropagation relies on the knowledge of the fixed point of the function to optimize, usually unknown and estimated by iterating until convergence. Therefore, these methods require intensive computation time to ensure a stable backpropagation. In this paper, we present an unrolled Proximal Point Algorithm method, where the end-toend optimization problem is redefined as a per unrolled iteration optimization problem. We prove that the proposed optimization strategy is memory-efficient and applicable for any number of computed unrolled iteration. We empirically show that our method achieves state-of-the-art image restoration quality.

Abstract: International audience; Conventionally, Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems are evaluated on their ability to correctly recognize each word contained in a speech signal. In this context, the word error rate (WER) metric is the reference for evaluating speech transcripts. Several studies have shown that this measure is too limited to correctly evaluate an ASR system, which has led to the proposal of other variants of metrics (weighted WER, BERTscore, semantic distance, etc.). However, they remain system-oriented, even when transcripts are intended for humans. In this paper, we firstly present Human Assessed Transcription Side-by-side (HATS), an original French manually annotated data set in terms of human perception of transcription errors produced by various ASR systems. 143 humans were asked to choose the best automatic transcription out of two hypotheses. We investigated the relationship between human preferences and various ASR evaluation metrics, including lexical and embedding-based ones, the latter being those that correlate supposedly the most with human perception.; Traditionnellement, les systèmes de reconnaissance automatique de la parole (RAP) sont évalués sur leur capacité à reconnaître correctement chaque mot contenu dans un signal vocal. Dans ce contexte, la mesure du taux d'erreur-mot est la référence pour évaluer les transcriptions vocales. Plusieurs études ont montré que cette mesure est trop limitée pour évaluer correctement un système de RAP, ce qui a conduit à la proposition d'autres variantes et d'autres métriques. Cependant, toutes ces métriques restent orientées "système'' alors même que les transcriptions sont destinées à des humains. Dans cet article, nous proposons un jeu de données original annoté manuellement en termes de perception humaine des erreurs de transcription produites par divers systèmes de RAP. 143 humains ont été invités à choisir la meilleure transcription automatique entre deux hypothèses. Nous étudions la relation entre les préférences humaines et diverses mesures d'évaluation pour les systèmes de RAP, y compris les mesures lexicales et celles fondées sur les plongements de mots.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we propose an algorithm to extract, from a given rectangular matrix, a submatrix with maximum volume, whose number of extracted columns is greater than the initial matrix rank. This problem arises in compression and summarization of databases, recommender systems, learning, numerical analysis or applied linear algebra. We use a continuous relaxation of the maximum volume matrix extraction problem, which admits a simple and closed form solution: the nonzero singular values of the extracted matrix must be equal. The proposed algorithm extracts matrices with singular values, which are close to be equal. It is inspired by a water-filling technique, traditionally dedicated to equalization strategies in communication channels. Simulations show that the proposed algorithm performs better than sampling methods based on determinantal point processes (DPPs) and achieves similar performance as the best known algorithm, but with a lower complexity.

Abstract: International audience; Finding better ways to handle software complexity (both inherent and accidental) is the holy grail for a significant part of the software engineering community, and especially for the Model Driven Engineering (MDE) one. To that purpose, plenty of techniques have been proposed, leading to a succession of trends in model based software developments paradigms in the last decades. While these trends seem to pop out from nowhere, we claim in this article that most of them actually stem from trying to get a better grasp on the variability of software. We revisit the history of MDE trying to identify the main aspect of variability they wanted to address when they were introduced. We conclude on what are the variability challenges of our time, including variability of data leading to machine learning of models.

Abstract: Deciding where to handle services and tasks, as well as provisioning an adequate amount of computing resources for this handling, is a main challenge of edge computing systems. Moreover, latency-sensitive services constrain the type and location of edge devices that can provide the needed resources. When available resources are scarce there is a possibility that some resource allocation requests are denied. In this work, we propose the VioLinn system to tackle the joint problems of task placement, service placement, and edge device provisioning. Dealing with latency-sensitive services is achieved through proximity-aware algorithms that ensure the tasks are handled close to the end-user. Moreover, the concept of spare edge device is introduced to handle sudden load variations in time and space without having to continuously overprovision. Several spare device selection algorithms are proposed with different cost/performance tradeoffs. Evaluations are performed both in a Kubernetes-based testbed and using simulations and show the benefit of using spare devices for handling localized load spikes with higher quality of service (QoS) and lower computing resource usage. The study of the different algorithms shows that it is possible to achieve this increase in QoS with different tradeoffs against cost and performance.

Abstract: International audience; Despite the wide availability of large motion databases, and recent advances in exploiting them to create tailored contents, artists still spend tremendous efforts in editing and adapting existing character animations to new contexts. This motion editing problem is a well-addressed research topic. Yet only a few approaches have considered the influence of the camera angle, and the resulting visual features it yields, as a mean to control and warp a character animation. This paper proposes the design of viewpoint-dependent motion warping units that perform subtle updates on animations through the specification of visual motion features such as visibility, or spatial extent. We express the problem as a specific case of visual servoing, where the warping of a given character motion is regulated by a number of visual features to enforce. Results demonstrate the relevance of the approach for different motion editing tasks and its potential to empower virtual characters with attention-aware communication abilities.

Abstract: International audience; Deep Learning (DL) applications are gaining increasing interest in the industry and academia for their outstanding computational capabilities. Indeed, they have found successful applications in various areas and domains such as avionics, robotics, automotive, medical wearable devices, gaming; some have been labeled as safety-critical, as system failures can compromise human life. Consequently, DL reliability is becoming a growing concern, and efficient reliability assessment approaches are required to meet safety constraints. This paper presents a survey of the main DL reliability assessment methodologies, focusing mainly on Fault Injection (FI) techniques used to evaluate the DL resilience. The article describes some of the most representative state-of-the-art academic and industrial works describing FI methodologies at different levels of abstraction. Finally, a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of each methodology is proposed to provide valuable guidelines for carrying out safety analyses.

Abstract: International audience; Gradient methods subject images to a series of operations to enhance some characteristics and facilitate image analysis, usually the contours of large objects. We argue that a gradient must show other characteristics, such as minor components and large uniform regions, particularly for the image segmentation task where subjective concepts such as region coherence and similarity are hard to interpret from the pixel information. This work extends the formalism of a previously proposed graph-based image gradient method that uses edge-weighted graphs aggregated with Random Forest (RF) to create descriptive gradients. We aim to explore more extensive input image areas and make changes driven by the RF mechanics. We evaluated the proposals on the edge and segmentation tasks, analyzing the gradient characteristics that most impacted the final segmentation. The experiments indicated that sharp thick contours are crucial, whereas fuzzy maps yielded the worst results even when created from deep methods with more precise edge maps. Also, we analyzed how uniform regions and small details impacted the final segmentation. Statistical analysis on the segmentation task demonstrated that the gradients created by the proposed are significantly better than most of the best edge maps methods and validated our original choices of attributes.

Abstract: International audience; Last-mile collection and delivery services often rely on multi-echelon logistic systems with many types of practical spatial, temporal, and resource constraints. We consider three extensions of the basic 2-echelon vehicle routing problem that are of practical interest: First, second-echelon vehicles need to simultaneously deliver and collect goods at customers within their specified time window. Second, first-echelon vehicles are allowed to perform multiple trips during the planning horizon. Third, the intermediate facilities, called satellites, allow temporary storage of goods, but the quantity that can be stored at a time is limited. This paper integrates these complicating features in a single mathematical model. To solve the problem, we design a decomposition-based matheuristic. It employs a reduced and refined mixed-integer programming formulation and two echelon-specific large neighborhood searches (LNS) to produce improving routes for the respective echelon. The most important algorithmic component is the feasibility check of LNS that relies on a sequence of constant-time and low-complexity tests. The final test allows rescheduling of the operations taking place at a satellite. It adapts the double-justification algorithm known from the scheduling literature. Extensive computational experiments systematically evaluate the new components of the matheuristic and benchmark it against a recent exact method for a related problem. Moreover, the impact of the main problem features such as the number of satellites and their capacity as well as the integration of forward and reverse flows is analyzed.

Abstract: International audience; To face market volatility, reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS) aim to efficiently and cost-effectively react to changes. We focus on one characteristic of RMS: the scalability (ability to adapt the volume of throughput). In the literature, the only few indicators for scalability are not always formally defined and usually only consider a partial view of scalability. Moreover, most of them are actually more suited for the configuration planning rather than for the design. However, the design of the RMS has a high impact on its scalability. We propose the first combinatorial definition of this problem and a new measure to fully assess the scalability of a system at the design phase. This measure, based on a multi-objective approach, can assess the scalability of single-product manufacturing systems, analysing all configurations that it can implement. We present numerical experiments to compare this indicator with a state-of-the-art scalability indicator and with some classical production line design indicators, and we show that future research should focus on scalability as a specific criterion to optimise during the design of an RMS. In addition, the results obtained allow us to infer some managerial insights on the best levers to use when performing a reconfiguration for scalability purpose.

Abstract: International audience; In dependent type theory, impredicativity is a powerful logical principle that allows the definition of propositions that quantify over arbitrarily large types, potentially resulting in self-referential propositions. Impredicativity can provide a system with increased logical strength and flexibility, but in counterpart it comes with multiple incompatibility results. In particular, Abel and Coquand showed that adding definitional uniqueness of identity proofs (UIP) to the main proof assistants that support impredicative propositions (Coq and Lean) breaks the normalization procedure, and thus the type-checking algorithm. However, it was not known whether this stems from a fundamental incompatibility between UIP and impredicativity or if a more suitable algorithm could decide type-checking for a type theory that supports both. In this paper, we design a theory that handles both UIP and impredicativity by extending the recently introduced observational type theory TTobs with an impredicative universe of definitionally proof-irrelevant types, as initially proposed in the seminal work on observational equality of Altenkirch et al. We prove decidability of conversion for the resulting system, that we call CCobs , by harnessing proof-irrelevance to avoid computing with impredicative proof terms. Additionally, we prove normalization for CCobs in plain Martin-Löf type theory, thereby showing that adding proof-irrelevant impredicativity does not increase the computational content of the theory.

Abstract: International audience; Eventual consistency is a consistency model that favors liveness over safety. It is often used in large-scale distributed systems where models ensuring a stronger safety incur performance that are too low to be deemed practical. Eventual consistency tends to be uniformly applied within a system, but we argue a demand exists for differentiated eventual consistency, e.g. in blockchain systems.We propose UPS to address this demand. UPS is a novel consistency mechanism that works in pair with our novel two-phase epidemic broadcast protocol GPS to offer differentiated eventual consistency and delivery speed. We propose two complementary analyses of the broadcast protocol: a continuous analysis and a discrete analysis based on compartmental models used in epidemiology. Additionally, we propose the formal definition of a scalable consistency metric to measure the consistency trade-off at runtime. We evaluate UPS in two simulated worldwide settings: a one-million-node network and a network emulating that of the Ethereum blockchain. In both settings, UPS reduces inconsistencies experienced by a majority of the nodes and reduces the average message latency for the remaining nodes.

Abstract: International audience; Fog Computing is a new paradigm aiming at decentralizing the Cloud by geographically distributing away computation, storage and network resources as well as related services. In order to design, develop, deploy, maintain and evolve Fog systems, languages are required for properly modeling both their entities (e.g., infrastructures, topologies, resources configurations) and their specific features such as the locality concept, QoS constraints applied on resources (e.g., energy, data privacy, latency) and their dependencies, the dynamicity of considered workloads, the heterogeneity of both applications and devices, etc. This paper provides a detailed overview of the current state-of-the-art in terms of Fog modeling languages. We relied on our long-term experience in Cloud Computing and Cloud Modeling to contribute a feature model describing what we believe to be the most important characteristics of Fog modeling languages. We also performed a systematic scientific literature search and selection process to obtain a list of already existing Fog modeling languages. Then, we evaluated and compared these Fog modeling languages according to the characteristics expressed in our feature model. As a result, we discuss in this paper the main capabilities of these Fog modeling languages and propose a corresponding set of open research challenges in this area. Abstract: International audience; Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) is a fully functional instrument for disease detection in clinical practice because of its ability to identify substances and quantify materials. In some practical applications, due to the limitation of scanning conditions, projection data can only be collected from a limited angle, and the consistency of measurement cannot be guaranteed. The existing DECT reconstruction methods fail to address well the severe artifacts and noise in DECT images caused by limited-angle scanning. In this article, we proposed a self-prior enhanced artifact removal network (SPEAR-Net) for limited-angle DECT, which can effectively combine the complementary information in the high- and low-energy domains and self-prior information to contribute positively to the reconstruction of high-quality DECT images. The SPEAR-Net consists of an image-domain self-prior network (IP-Net), two dual-energy image-domain self-prior networks (DIP-Nets), and a dual-energy sinogram-domain self-prior network (DSP-Net). Specifically, the IP-Net and DIP-Net are adopted to extract the features of the DECT reconstructed images under dual quarter scanning as prior information. The self-prior projection obtained from the forward projection of the prior computed tomography (CT) image is harnessed by DSP-Net to complete the dual-energy limited-angle projection data and to facilitate the performance of SPEAR-Net in removing artifacts in the reconstructed dual-energy images. Qualitative and quantitative analyses demonstrate the superior capability of SPEAR-Net in dual-energy limited-angle projection data complementation, detail preservation, and artifact removal. Two popular DECT applications, virtual noncontrast (VNC) imaging and iodine contrast agent quantification, reveal that images reconstructed by SPEAR-Net have promising clinical significance.

Abstract: International audience; In this work we present the design and fabrication in metallic 3D-printing of a compact conformal slotted waveguide antenna array operating in the Ku-band. The application objective, although not limited only to this, is the optimisation of an antenna element which by stacking will be able to form a quasi-cylindrical sector. A beamforming network will be used for beam-steering in the elevation plane as coverage in the azimuthal plane is guaranteed by the conformal geometry. The compact design of the antenna element is therefore of great significance. For this reason, a direct feeding scheme by a coaxial connector is adopted. The antenna has been optimized following multiple parametric analyses of its geometrical parameters for the enhancement of the bandwidth, return losses and realized gain. The antenna was fabricated with Selective Laser Melting in aluminium and the experimental results agree well with the numerically calculated ones. The proposed CSWAA exhibits a reflection coefficient below -10 dB, realized gain above 14 dBi, as well as good cross-polarization and side-lobe level over a relative bandwidth of 8%.

Abstract: International audience; Cosserat rod theory proved efficient modeling performances in robotics, especially in the context of continuum robots, in the past decade. The implementation of such theory is far from being unique and straightforward. We consider the illustrative example of multi-segment, general routing tendon actuated continuum robots in their nominal static operating regime. This paper details two main approaches based on Cosserat rod modeling, namely the Newtonian and Lagrangian approaches. We provide a walk-through guide regarding theoretical derivations and numerical implementation of both approaches, together with a proof of equivalence. This comparative study is supplemented with novel contributions and extensions of each approach and in-depth discussion of their performances and applicability, as well as highlighting their special features.

Abstract: In this paper, we study a paratransit application in which children are transported every day from their homes to their special schools or medical-social establishments. To optimize this transportation system, the establishments collaborate to propose a joint transportation plan. We propose a new algorithm to jointly build vehicle routes that visit several establishments and simultaneously set the establishments’ opening hours. This algorithm combines a large neighborhood search, the resolution of a route-based model, and the progressive shrinkage of the planning window. It is applied to a real case from the area of Lyon in France, including 34 schools and 575 heterogeneous users served by a heterogeneous fleet of reconfigurable vehicles. On average, we show that in addition to the 10% of saving that can be expected by sharing vehicle routes between schools, 7% of additional savings can be achieved by school bell adjustment. This cost saving also decreases average user ride times and the number of vehicles required, creating longer routes that are more attractive for driver services. Abstract: International audience; Haptic exoskeleton gloves are a widespread solution for providing force-feedback in Virtual Reality (VR), especially for 3D object manipulations. However, they are still lacking an important feature regarding in-hand haptic sensations: the palmar contact. In this paper, we present PalmEx, a novel approach which incorporates palmar force-feedback into exoskeleton gloves to improve the overall grasping sensations and manual haptic interactions in VR. PalmEx's concept is demonstrated through a self-contained hardware system augmenting a hand exoskeleton with an encountered palmar contact interface-physically encountering the users' palm. We build upon current taxonomies to elicit PalmEx's capabilities for both the exploration and manipulation of virtual objects. We first conduct a technical evaluation optimising the delay between the virtual interactions and their physical counterparts. We then empirically evaluate PalmEx's proposed design space in a user study (n=12) to assess the potential of a palmar contact for augmenting an exoskeleton. Results show that PalmEx offers the best rendering capabilities to perform believable grasps in VR. PalmEx highlights the importance of the palmar stimulation, and provides a low-cost solution to augment existing high-end consumer hand exoskeletons.

This article focuses on the case of spent grain to illustrate the role of the circular economy in food transition. Bases on a series of interviews, the paper discusses business modeling to operationalize sustainable development in the food sector and presents a discussion and conclusion on the advantages and limitations of the deployment of the circular economy in the brewing industry, taking into account and understanding the interests and constraints of various stakeholders.

Abstract: International audience; Supplier reliability is a critical issue for manufacturing companies. Delivery delays from suppliers create backlog and firefighting on the shop floors. To avoid disruption and hedge against supplier lead time uncertainty, companies rely on diversification, multi-sourcing, and safety lead times. In multi-sourcing, the buyer might order the same product (raw material) from different suppliers. The design of a robust and cost-efficient purchasing/ordering plan in multi-sourcing is a complex task which has a strong impact on the performance of the company. In this study, we investigate the use of robust optimization for the integrated lot-sizing and supplier selection problem under lead time uncertainty. More specifically, we use polyhedral budgeted uncertainty sets. The resulting model determines the ideal lot sizes to minimize the total costs taking into consideration suppliers’ reliability and prices. To solve this problem, a row and column generation approach is proposed. To alleviate scalability issues, we enhance the row and column generation through a robust counterpart formulation, and we propose an efficient fix-and-optimize approach. Our extensive computational experiments show that the fix-and-optimize approach yields good quality solutions within a reasonable amount of computational time. We provide insights into supplier diversification based on the risk profile of the decision-maker. One of the conclusions is that an extremely risk-averse decision-maker selects a single supplier, namely the most reliable one even if it does not offer the lowest price.

Abstract: International audience; Cognition of user behavior can make future mobile networks more intelligent and flexible. Knowledge about users' habits can be used to personalize services and intelligently manage network resources. However, inferring this key information with a low-cost signaling implementation, and avoiding constant user interaction, is crucial for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs). With this motivation, this paper investigates the detection of the real-life mobile user environment using contextaware detection via multi-task learning (MTL). We propose models that are able to automatically detect up to eight distinct real-life user environments. We also improve the detection accuracy with the assistance of the mobility state profiling task. We associate both environment and mobility tasks because they correspond to the main attributes of user behavior and, additionally, both of them are correlated. Using MTL, the task of detecting environment corresponds to simultaneously answering the questions: "how and where mobile user consumes mobile services?". We build models using real-life radio data which is already available in network. This data has been massively gathered from multiple diversified situations of mobile users. Simulation results support our claim to detect several environment classes in network infrastructure with improved UED accuracy.

Abstract: International audience; Frontotemporal dementia and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis are rare neurodegenerative diseases with no effective treatment. The development of biomarkers allowing an accurate assessment of disease progression is crucial for evaluating new therapies. Concretely, neuroimaging and transcriptomic (microRNA) data have been shown useful in tracking their progression. However, no single biomarker can accurately measure progression in these complex diseases. Additionally, large samples are not available for such rare disorders. It is thus essential to develop methods that can model disease progression by combining multiple biomarkers from small samples. In this paper, we propose a new framework for computing a disease progression score (DPS) from cross-sectional multimodal data. Specifically, we introduce a supervised multimodal variational autoencoder that can infer a meaningful latent space, where latent representations are placed along a disease trajectory. A score is computed by orthogonal projections onto this path. We evaluate our framework with multiple synthetic datasets and with a real dataset containing 14 patients, 40 presymptomatic genetic mutation carriers and 37 controls from the PREV-DEMALS study. There is no ground truth for the DPS in real-world scenarios, therefore we use the area under the ROC curve (AUC) as a proxy metric. Results with the synthetic datasets support this choice, since the higher the AUC, the more accurate the predicted simulated DPS. Experiments with the real dataset demonstrate better performance in comparison with stateof-the-art approaches. The proposed framework thus leverages cross-sectional multimodal datasets with small sample sizes to objectively measure disease progression, with potential application in clinical trials.

Abstract: International audience; Network Traffic Classification enables a number of practical applications ranging from network monitoring to resource management, with security implications as well. Nowadays, traffic classification has become a challenging task in order to distinguish among a variety of applications due to the huge amount of generated traffic. Therefore, developing Machine Learning (ML) models, which can successfully identify network applications, is one of the most important tasks. However, among the ML models applied to network traffic classification so far, no model outperforms all the others. To solve these issues, this paper proposes a novel Deep Learning (DL)-based approach that incorporates multiple Decision Tree based models. This approach employs a non-linear blending ensemble method by combining tree-based classifiers through DL in order to maximize generalization accuracy. This ensemble consists of two levels called base classifiers and meta-classifiers. In the first level, Decision Tree-based models are used as the base classifiers while in the second level, DL is used as a meta-model to combine the outputs of the base classifiers. Using two publicly available datasets, we show that our proposed ensemble is suitable for network traffic classification and outperforms the linear blending (using logistic regression as meta-model) as well as several well-known ML models, which are Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), AdaBoost, K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), LightGBM, Catboost, and XGBoost.

Abstract: International audience; Walking stability is one of the key issues for humanoid robots. A self-stabilised walking gait for a full dynamic model of humanoid robots is proposed. For simplified models, that is, the linear inverted pendulum model and variable-length inverted pendulum model, self-stabilisation of walking gait can be obtained if virtual constraints are properly defined. This result is extended to the full dynamic model of humanoid robots by using an essential dynamic model, which is developed based on the zero dynamics concept. With the proposed method, a robust stable walking for a humanoid robot is achieved by adjusting the step timing and landing position of the swing foot automatically, following its intrinsic dynamic characteristics. This exempts the robot from the time-consuming high-level control approaches, especially when a full dynamic model is applied. How different walking patterns/features (i.e., the swing foot motion, the vertical centre of mass motion, the switching manifold configuration, etc.) affect the stability of the walking gait is analysed. Simulations are conducted on robots Romeo and TALOS to support the results.

Abstract: International audience; Establishing an effective collaboration between augmented-reality (AR) and remote desktop users is a challenge because collaborators do not share a common physical space and equipment. Yet, such asymmetrical collaboration configurations are common today for many design tasks, due to the geographical distance of people or unusual circumstances such as a lockdown. We conducted a first study to investigate trade-offs of three remote representations of an AR workspace: a fully virtual representation, a first-person view, and an external view. Building on our findings, we designed ARgus, a multi-view video-mediated communication system that combines these representations through interactive tools for navigation, previewing, pointing, and annotation. We report on a second user study that observed how 12 participants used ARgus to provide remote instructions for an AR furniture arrangement task. Participants extensively used its view transition tools, while the system reduced their reliance on verbal instructions.

Abstract: This work investigates lot sizing with component substitution under demand uncertainty. The integration of component substitution with lot sizing in an uncertain demand context is important because the consolidation of the demand for components naturally allows risk-pooling and reduces operating costs. The considered problem is relevant not only in a production context, but also in the context of distribution planning. We propose a stochastic programming formulation for the static–dynamic type of uncertainty, in which the setup decisions are frozen but the production and consumption quantities are decided dynamically. To tackle the scalability issues commonly encountered in multistage stochastic optimization, this paper investigates the use of stochastic dual dynamic programming (SDDP). In addition, we consider various improvements of SDDP, including the use of strong cuts, the fast generation of cuts by solving the linear relaxation of the problem, and retaining the average demand scenarios. Finally, we propose two heuristics, namely, a hybrid of progressive hedging with SDDP and a heuristic version of SDDP. Computational experiments conducted on well-known instances from the literature show that the heuristic version of SDDP outperforms other methods. The proposed method can plan with up to 10 decision stages and 20 scenarios per stage, which results in 2010 scenario paths in total. Moreover, as the heuristic version of SDDP can replan to account for new information in less than a second, it is convenient in a dynamic context. Summary of Contribution: We believe our paper is suitable for the mission and scope of IJOC because we design efficient algorithms to solve an operations research problem. More precisely, we investigate the use of stochastic dual dynamic programming (SDDP) for lot sizing with component substitution under demand uncertainty. In this work, we consider the static–dynamic decision framework, and a good approximation of the expected costs in this context requires us to solve the problem with a large number of scenarios of future demand. As solving the considered problem is computationally intensive, we investigate the use of SDDP, which decomposes the problem per decision stage. We study several enhancements of SDDP, such as the use of strong cuts, the incorporation of a lower bound computed with the average demand scenario, the multicut version of SDDP, and scenario sampling with randomized quasi–Monte Carlo. Despite these improvements, the convergence of SDDP remains slow. Consequently, we propose a heuristic version of SDDP and a hybrid of progressive hedging and SDDP. We present the results of an extensive computational study performed on well-known instances from the literature. The results show that the heuristic SDDP outperforms the hybrid of progressive hedging with SDDP and state-of-the-art methods from the literature. Besides, our analysis shows that component substitution can pool the risk, and it allows maintaining the same service level with less inventory. The presented methodology can be used by practitioners to size their production lots, and subsequent researchers can build upon our results to consider uncertainty in other parameters, such as lead times, yields, and production capacities. Abstract: Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Array (CGRA) architectures are promising high-performance and power-efficient platforms. However, mapping applications efficiently on CGRA is a challenging task. This is known to be an NP complete problem. Hence, finding good mapping solutions for a given CGRA architecture within a reasonable time is complex. Additionally, finding scalability in compilation time and memory footprint for large heterogeneous CGRAs is also a well known problem. In this article, we present a stochastic mapping approach that can efficiently explore the architecture space and allows finding best of solutions while having limited and steady use of memory footprint. Experimental results show that our compilation flow allows to reach performances with low-complexity CGRA architectures that are as good as those obtained with more complex ones thanks to the better exploration of the mapping solution space. Parameters considered in our experiments are number of tiles, Register File (RF) size, number of load/store (LS) units, network topologies, and so on. Our results demonstrate that high-quality compilation for a wide range of applications is possible within reasonable run-times. Experiments with several DSP benchmarks show that the best CGRA configuration from the architectural exploration surpasses an ultra low-power DSP optimized RISC-V CPU to achieve up to 15.28× (with an average of 6× and minimum of 3.4×) performance gain and 29.7× (with an average of 13.5× and minimum of 6.3×) energy gain with an area overhead of 1.5× only.

Abstract: The control of industrial robot manipulators presents a difficult problem for control engineers due to the complexity of their nonlinear dynamics models. Nonlinear controls based on feedback linearization are developed to meet control requirements. Model-based nonlinear control is highly sensitive to parameter errors and leads to problems of robustness for tracking trajectories at high speeds, and there is the additional problem of a heavy computational burden to consider in the design of nonlinear controllers. In this paper, a mechatronic design approach is proposed, which aims to facilitate controller design by redesigning the mechanical structure. The problem is approached in two steps: first, the dynamic decoupling conditions of manipulators are described and discussed, involving redistribution of the moving mass, which leads to the decoupling of motion equations. A classical linear control law is then used to track the desired efficient bang-bang profile trajectory. Then, in the presence of parameter uncertainty and external disturbances, the nonlinear controls with simple structures are adopted to stabilize the decoupled system asymptotically. An analysis of the results from a simulation of this approach demonstrates its effectiveness in controller design. The proposed improvement in control performance is illustrated via two spatial manipulators.

Abstract: International audience; The Internet of Things (IoT) aims for connecting Anything, Anywhere, Anytime (AAA). This assumption brings about several software engineering challenges that constitute a serious obstacle to its wider adoption. The main feature of the Internet of Things (IoT) is genericity w.r.t the variability of software and hardware technologies. Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) is a paradigm that advocates using models to address software engineering problems. It can help to meet the genericity of the IoT from a software engineering perspective. Existing MDE approaches for the IoT focus only on modeling the internal behavior of things but lack a comprehensive approach dedicated to network modeling. In the present paper, we introduce a network-oriented methodology based on MDE to unify the IoT's heterogeneous concepts. Fundamentally, we avoid the intrinsic heterogeneity of the IoT by separating the network's specification (i.e., the things, the communication scheme, and its constraints) from its concrete implementation (i.e., the low-level artifacts such as source code and documentation). Technically, the methodology relies on a model-based Domain-Specific Language (DSL) and a code generator. The former enables the modeling of the network's specification, and the latter provides a procedure to generate the low-level artifacts from this specification. Our results show that this methodology makes IoT's software engineering more rigorous, helps prevent bugs earlier, and saves time.

Abstract: International audience; The COVID-19 pandemic’s impacts have been devastating for the global economy, and particularly for manufacturing companies. Many firms were unprepared for a crisis of this magnitude and adapted their operations in an ad-hoc manner. Some of these adaptations were facilitated by digital technologies (DTs). This article examines extant literature using a systematic review methodology in order to extend our understanding of what DTs have been used in manufacturing companies during the pandemic, how DTs have helped manufacturing companies cope with the pandemic, and how these innovations can be used in the post-pandemic world. The major outcome of our study is a novel classification of DT applications in the pandemic setting in the manufacturing industry. In addition, we propose an agenda for future research.

Abstract: International audience; In 2016, Google introduced the concept of Federated Learning (FL), enabling collaborative Machine Learning (ML). FL does not share local data but ML models, offering applications in diverse domains. This paper focuses on the application of FL to Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs). There, common criteria to compare existing solutions are missing. In particular, this survey shows: (i) how FL-based IDSs are used in different domains; (ii) what differences exist between architectures; (iii) the state of the art of FL-based IDS. With a structured literature survey, this work identifies the relevant state of the art in FL-based intrusion detection from its creation in 2016 until 2021. It provides a reference architecture and a taxonomy to serve as guidelines to compare and design FLbased IDSs. Both are validated with the existing works.
