This study uses citation data and survey data for 55 library and information science journals to identify three factors underlying a set of 11 journal ranking metrics (six citation metrics and five stated preference metrics). The three factors—three composite rankings—represent (1) the citation impact of a typical article, (2) subjective reputation, and (3) the citation impact of the journal as a whole (all articles combined). Together, they account for 77% of the common variance within the set of 11 metrics. Older journals (those founded before 1953) and nonprofit journals tend to have high reputation scores relative to their citation impact. Unlike previous research, this investigation shows no clear evidence of a distinction between the journals of greatest importance to scholars and those of greatest importance to practitioners. This study was conducted to explore author perceptions of positive and negative behaviors among LIS journal editors. The researchers solicited input from authors regarding their understanding of editors' roles, the importance they attribute to specific editor behaviors, the frequency with which they encounter them, and the impact of specific behaviors. Study participants also reported changes they wish to see in editor behaviors. The findings suggest that authors encounter what they perceive to be positive editor behaviors far more often than negative ones. However, the data also suggests room for improvement. Behaviors relative to the consideration of authors and to editorial intervention appear to be the categories most in need of attention. The researchers introduce the ethics of care as a potential framework for addressing behavioral changes that study participants wish to see, and more generally, as a guiding principle for editorial practice. Study results might help to form the basis of a typology of LIS journal editor behaviors, which in turn might inform the development of prescriptive guidelines for training new editors or for improving the performance of those who already serve in that capacity. This prestige study surveyed full-time faculty of American Library Association (ALA)--accredited programs in library and information studies regarding library and information science (LIS) journals. Faculty were asked to rate a list of eighty-nine LIS journals on a scale from 1 to 5 based on each journal's importance to their research and teaching. Mean and mode calculations were used to rank results. Additionally, LIS faculty were asked to list the five most prestigious journals to be published in for tenure and promotion purposes at their institution. Several journals were rated highly by each method. This article examines citations of Western journals in eight LIS journals and six history journals published in Taiwan. The findings show that both the Western journals' impact factor values and whether they are included in JCR may not necessarily indicate their real use in Taiwan's LIS and history research-especially in history research. Throughout its history, the information systems (IS) discipline has engaged in extensive self-examination, particularly with regard to its apparent diversity. Our overall objective in this study is to better understand the diversity in IS research, and the extent to which diversity is universal across journals that publish IS research. We developed a classification system that comprises five key characteristics of diversity (reference discipline, level of analysis, topic, research approach, and research method) based on a review of prior literature. We then examined articles over a five-year period, from 1995 to 1999, in five journals acknowledged as the top journals of the field, at least in North America. Analyses reveal considerable diversity in each of the key characteristics. Perhaps not surprisingly, the research approach used is more focused with most studies being conducted using hypothetico-deductive approaches, whereas reference discipline is perhaps the most diverse of the characteristics examined. An interesting finding is that IS itself emerged as a key reference discipline in the late 1990s. The 'Journal of Management Information Systems' and 'Information Systems Research' publish articles displaying the greatest diversity, and 'MIS Quarterly' and 'Decision Sciences' publish articles that focus on subsets of the field. Our research provides a foundation for addressing the direction that diversity in the IS discipline takes over time. In the shorter term, researchers can use our classification system as a guide to writing abstracts and selecting key words, and the findings of our journal analyses to determine the best outlet for their type of research. Purpose: This paper aims to investigate the characterization of corrections to the papers published in Library and Information Science (LIS) journals during 2006-2015. It studies the frequency and location of the published errors, time interval between the publication of the original papers and their corrections, as well as associations between journals' impact factors (IF) and their correction rates. Design/methodology/approach: The population of the study comprised of 369 errata published in 50 LIS journals. The data were obtained from Clarivate Analytics' Web of Science (WoS) and Journal Citation Reports. Findings: The results of the study revealed a correction rate of 0.37 per cent for LIS journals, which is substantially lower than that of 124 subject categories with at-least one erratum in the WoS. Among the countries with the highest number of errata in LIS journals, the USA ranked first, followed by China and England. However, the greatest share of errata to overall LIS publications of the country was seen in Kazakhstan, Russia and Botswana. Results showed that no statistically significant relationships existed between the journals' IF and their correction rates. The highest proportion of errors published in LIS literature was occurred in authors' information, references, tables and figures. Moreover, the average time from publication of the original articles to their corresponding errata was found to be 8.7 months. Social implications: Correcting the unintentional mistakes in scholarly articles is an ethical responsibility of researchers and journal editors. Introduction: Research journals form the core of the field of knowledge of a scientific discipline. In the case of profession-oriented disciplines, some "not-as-scientific- as-others" journals also define this core. Objectives: To Describe thematic profiles by journal and country from the analysis of articles of Latin American Librarianship and Information Science (LIS) journals in Spanish language (2008-2016), and to detect local trends and identify areas of vacancy. Methodology: Through a basic quantitative analysis, Latin American LIS Journals are characterized for the period indicated. A database with the articles of the publications identified is made. Results: A total of 28 journal titles and 2388 articles have been collected. Disparity between countries is identified in the quantities of titles and articles. Foreign authorship pattern to three leading Indian library and information science (LIS) journals during 2008 to 2017 has been examined to identify the acceptability and popularity of Indian LIS journals among foreign authors. The present study investigates the authorship pattern in terms of different aspects like journals, years, collaborations, prolific authors, countries, research areas, cited papers and citations. It is found that in last 10 year the three LIS journals publish total 186 foreign authored article having total 1267 citation and two-authored papers are predominant. Besides, the authors from Nigeria share maximum articles followed by USA. It is recommended that the Indian LIS authors need to emphasis more on international collaboration to output more foreign authored contributions in national level journals to enrich journals literature. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Revista Interamericana de Bibliotecología, it is pertinent to remember how the current direction of the Journal was assumed: Which were the disadvantages faced back then and how were they overcome. In the previous issue, a historical tour was made and editorial committees and teams that have contributed to the RIB continue were remembered. This study aimed to examine the hidden structures and patterns of information flow in Chinese-language Library and Information Science (LIS) journals in Taiwan. Thirteen Chinese LIS journals and 2,914 articles published between 2001 and 2012 were selected as subject and an aggregated 13x13 matrix was generated to perform journal-to-journal citation analysis. The twelve-year period was further divided into three individual periods of four years each to conduct journal-to-journal citation analysis for evolutional comparison. Social network analysis was used to discover the implicit structures and patterns embedded in Chinese-language LIS journals in Taiwan in terms of network structure. The embedded structures and patterns in the Chinese-language LIS journal network were characterized by Bonich's Eigenvector degree centrality, Stephenson and Zelen's information centrality and Freeman's betweenness centrality. These were used to measure journal prominence and role, bottom-up clique to find core journals and structural equivalence to show alternative publication outlets. Presently, journals are considered as the most important tools of information science and knowledge growth throughout the world. Due to the increase in the number of scientific journals, the selection, evaluation and determination of the authenticity of these resources by the authorized organizations has attached more significance to them. Thus, the present study aims at investigating the compliance of Iranian library and information science journals with basic standards of journal evaluation through Thomson Reuters' viewpoint. This is an applied research, which has been conducted through comparative analysis. It evaluates the authenticity of scientific journals through four basic standards of Thomson Reuters, namely on-time publishing of journals, observing international publishing laws, fulltext in English, and peer review. The population of the research includes all the active scientific Iranian journals in the field of library and information sciences (12 journals). Results showed that the mean of correlation ratio between the studied journals and standards was 75%. On-time publishing and full-text in English were observed only in 33% and 58% of the studied journals respectively. However, observing international laws of publishing and peer review are in optimal status. Studies are needed in order to find out the compliance of the other countries' library science journals with international standards, (specially developing ones) to help those countries to identify the existing gaps which will assist them to present their researches in the international level through being indexed in authentic databases. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand how Chinese library and information science (LIS) journal articles cite works from outside the discipline (WOD) to identify the impact of knowledge import from outside the discipline on LIS development.Design/methodology/approach This paper explores the Chinese LIS’ preferences in citing WOD by employing bibliometrics and machine learning techniques.Findings Chinese LIS citations to WOD account for 29.69 percent of all citations, and they rise over time. Computer science, education and communication are the most frequently cited disciplines. Under the categorization of Biglan model, Chinese LIS prefers to cite WOD from soft science, applied science or nonlife science. In terms of community affiliation, the cited authors are mostly from the academic community, but rarely from the practice community. Mass media has always been a citation source that is hard to ignore. There is a strong interest of Chinese LIS in citing emerging topics.Practical implications This paper can be implemented in the reformulation of Chinese LIS knowledge system, the promotion of interdisciplinary collaboration, the development of LIS library collection and faculty advancement. It may also be used as a reference to develop strategies for the global LIS.Originality/value This paper fills the research gap in analyzing citations to WOD from Chinese LIS articles and their impacts on LIS, and recommends that Chinese LIS should emphasize on knowledge both on technology and people as well as knowledge from the practice community, cooperate with partners from other fields, thus to produce knowledge meeting the demands from library and information practice as well as users. Jeffrey Beall’s blog listing of potential predatory journals and publishers, as well as his Criteria for Determining Predatory Open-Access (OA) Publishers are often looked at as tools to help researchers avoid publishing in predatory journals. While these Criteria has brought a greater awareness of OA predatory journals, these tools alone should not be used as the only source in determining the quality of a scholarly journal. Employing a three-person independent judgment making panel, this study demonstrates the subjective nature of Beall’s Criteria by applying his Criteria to both OA and non-OA Library and Information Science journals (LIS), to demonstrate that traditional peer-reviewed journals could be considered predatory. Objective: Identify the research lines present in the Journal Información, Cultura y Sociedad (ICS), through network analysis, defining historical trends of interest, as well as opportunities to cover knowledge gaps. Methods: A cross - sectional descriptive study based on research published in ICS from its inception until 2016, considering as key elements the keywords, considering them as referring to the issue of publication. The evaluation had two approaches: number of occurrence of the nodes in the study period and analysis of power relations, scope and greater impact among them, applying Network Analysis (AR). Finally, it was comparatively evaluated the occurrence versus relations between nodes. Results: We reviewed 197 research papers, identifying 570 key words or research topics. The AR established that the majority of research papers have Argentina as the main topic, with a greater interest in issues directly related to librarianship, few of which correspond to cross-cutting themes and related to other environments. Conclusions: The greatest number of research topics in ICS are linked to library techniques and processes, so there is an opportunity to strengthen the content of the publication with transversal topics of an organizational type, such as knowledge management, information management Organizational, intelligence or business surveillance. Purpose -- This study aims to provide an extensive overview of OA journals' status and quality in 27 research areas based on all Scopus-indexed journals. It shows the volume of OA journals, proportion of publications in OA journals and the quality of these journals in comparison with subscription-based counterparts. Design/methodology/approach -- This research investigated 22,256 active peer-reviewed journals indexed by Scopus in 2015. Data were gathered using the Journal Metrics website. The current research adopted four indicators to compare the quality of OA and non-OA journals indexed in Scopus under each subject area, namely citedness rate, CiteScore, SNIP and SJR. Findings -- OA journals comprised approximately 17 per cent out of the total journals indexed by Scopus in 2015. The results revealed an uneven spread of OA journals across disciplines, ranged from 5.5 to 28.7 per cent. Studying the quality of journals as measured by CiteScore, SJR SNIP leads us to the finding that, in all research areas, except for health profession and nursing, non-OA journals attain statistically significant higher average quality than do OA journals. The study examines the reference accuracy of two prominent Indian library and information science journals, viz. Annals of Library and Information Studies and DESIDOC Journal of Library and Information Technology. In all, one hundred and eighteen references were considered for verification. Only 39 (33%) references were correct. Among 79 incorrect references, there were total 151 errors of which 71 (47%) errors were major and 80 (53%) were minor errors. The average number of errors (ratio of number of errors) was 1.28. A proper mechanism is needed in both the journals to maintain the quality of references in terms of errors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study uses journal ratings in criminology and criminal justice, library and information science, public administration, and social work to investigate two research questions: (1) Are stated preference (subjective) journal ratings more closely related to size-dependent citation metrics (eigenfactor and total citations, which represent the impact of the journal as a whole) or to size-independent citation metrics (article influence and CiteScore, which represent the impact of a typical article)? (2) Are stated preference ratings more closely related to unweighted citation metrics (five-year impact factor and source normalized impact per publication, which do not account for the impact of each citing journal) or to weighted citation metrics (article influence and SCImago journal rank, which do)? Within the disciplines evaluated here, respondents’ subjective ratings of journals are more closely related to size-independent metrics and weighted metrics. The relative strength of the relationship between subjective ratings and size-independent metrics is moderated by subject area and other factors, while the relative strength of the relationship between subjective ratings and weighted metrics is consistent across all four disciplines. DESIDOC Journal of Library and Information Technology (DJLIT) has been considered one of the most important journal in the field of Library and Information Science. The present study covers year-wise published papers, special issue, authorship pattern, degree of author collaboration, author productivity, state-wise distribution of authors, country-wise distribution of authors, major contributors, length of papers, cited references, subject-wise published papers in DJLIT during the period of 2011-2015. The study reveals that 310 papers were published in 30 issues of 5 volumes during 2011-2015. 70 (22.58%) papers in great numbers are published in volume no. 32 in 2012, 193 (62.26%) papers are published in special issues, 132 (42.58%) contributed their papers as two-authored and 119 (38.39%) contributed as single author, average author productivity per author is 0.54 during 2011-2015, Delhi state 107 (18.54%) authors are great in number out of 577 authors, 502 (87%) Indian and 75 (13%) foreign authors contributed their papers. The present paper assesses the contribution of West Bengal authors in Indian LIS journals during 2006-2015 based on Indian Citation Index (ICI). The bibliometric study examined the publication productivity and trend according to year, authorship pattern, collaborative coefficient, prolific authors, prolific institutions, preferred journals, reference wise etc. During the study period, a total number of 193 articles have been contributed in 13 Indian LIS journals by the West Bengal authors. Jadavpur University has been found as the leading productive institutions and IASLIC Bulletin has been considered as the most preferred journals for scholarly communication. This article shares the experience of the InfoTecarios group, while commemorating its fifth anniversary. InfoTecarios is a regional initiative that publishes weekly blog posts in its website, written by Latin American professionals, and hence it conducts an important scientific dissemination activity of library and information science. It presents details about its origin, the selection and format of its publications, the technologies they use to operate and promote the group and its website, their website’s user and usage data, as well as some conclusions about its importance and its future. The present study is based on the data taken from the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), a database of fully open access peer-reviewed scholarly journals. The prime objective of the study is to explore quantitatively the inclusion of Library & Information Science Journal from several perspectives. It is found that there are 158 LIS journals indexed in DOAJ published from 43 countries in 21 different languages. While English is the dominant language of publication 3 journals are published simultaneously in five languages. India occupies the fifth rank sharing a common position with its counterparts like Poland and United Kingdom with six Indian LIS journals indexed in DOAJ. Purpose A major problem in today’s scholarly publishing process is the long tails for the assignment of volume and issue numbers for approved articles. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the extent to which information science journals offer early view features and the effects of these features.Design/methodology/approach The study addresses three basic questions: Do the articles approved for publication in information science journals appear in the online platforms of these journals before the assignment of volume and issue numbers? How long do the articles wait in the online platforms before they get the volume and issue numbers? Is there a statistically significant relationship between the online accessing numbers of the articles before they are published and bibliometric indicators?Findings More than half of the information science journals complete the editorial process in reasonable durations and share new articles with their readers before publishing them. In some journals, there are articles that wait for more than a year to be assigned volume and issue numbers after the completion of the editorial process. There are statistically significant differences, in terms of both their impact factor and immediacy index values, between the journals that offer early view features and those that do not. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has brought out API linked selection and promotion of teachers and other academic staff through the UGC Regulations 2010. It is also applied to the library staff at the level of Assistant librarian cadre and above and also college librarian. The UGC had made four amendments in the Regulations as quality measures in the past. The UGC recently identified and issued a list of 38652 journals for counting of API in the category of Research Publication - Journals for selection/promotion of teachers and other academic staff in the universities and colleges. This study presents a content analysis on the subject matter of five leading research journals of Library and Information Science (LIS) published during 2011-12. Authors of the journals, professional affiliation and geographical positions, authorship trends, subject categories, major research areas, key words and research grounds are discussed and compared with the LIS scholarly articles of the past. The study illustrates that most of the research articles are single authored. American and European authors contributed most of the articles, and majority contributors are faculty members of LIS. The barriers that hinder the quality research in developing countries have also been discussed in this paper. Promising domains of LIS research includes library instructions, information literacy training, librarians as instructors and educators, blog analysis, assessment of digital communication and digital preservation. The Journal of Library History established itself in 1966 as a leading venue for publishing scholarship addressing libraries and librarianship. In recognition of the journal's 50th anniversary, this study uses data derived from Google Scholar to identify the articles in JLH and its successors that have been cited most often. Several studies discussed the characteristics of authors who published in Library and Information Science journals. Although none focused specifically on Arab librarians as authors, the current study attempts to reveal the scholarly contributions to library literature by Arab librarians. The study describes and analyses the journal research publications in Library and Information Science journals by professional librarians from 1981 to 2010. Single-author articles are found to be highly followed by two and three authored articles. The average degree of collaboration between authors in Library and Information Science journals is 9.64% (only 19 journal articles written by at least two or three authors). The preferences of the authors of Chinese library and information science (LIS) journal articles in citing Internet sources were investigated using eight premium Chinese LIS journals from Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (the observation group) and 10 journals in other disciplines (the control group) from the same database from 1999 to 2008. A total of 252,881 citations were analyzed in terms of count, domain name, and citing purposes. The results show that (a) in comparison to the disciplines in the control group, LIS articles in Chinese journals indicated a strong preference for citing Internet sources, and this preference is increasing; (b) LIS articles did not seem to discriminate against domain names when citing Internet sources; and (c) LIS articles cited more Internet sources as evidence to support research results and conclusions. Excessive dependency on Internet sources may raise concerns over the quality, research ethics, and credibility of research publications. Chinese LIS researchers should place more emphasis on the disadvantages of Internet sources as supporting material. The article presents the top library and information science journals (LIS) published from India. These include "Annals of Library and Information Studies, "DESIDOC Journal of Library & Information Technology" and "Information Studies." They publish research papers, short communications, editorials, obituaries, book reviews and reports of conferences and seminars.

The paper identifies the present status of journal publishing in India in the field of library & information science. Identification of journals were made by consulting various sources. The characteristics of the journals have been studied on various parameters like number of years of existence, type of publisher, accessibility, references and citation characteristics, etc. Of the total 72 identified journals, it was observed that almost 70% journals started their publication from 2000 onwards. About 81% journals are available on subscription basis. Print as well as online format for dissemination of research have been adopted by 59% journals, however, 30% journals are still available only in print form. It is seen that private or profit-making (59%) organizations are more interested to publish LIS journals than non-profit making organizations (41%). One of the major drawbacks of Indian LIS journals is there poor visibility and limited coverage in various bibliographical databases. More than 54% journals are not indexed in any important bibliographic database and only 6 journals are indexed in LISA, LISTA or ILSA. The citation statistics of these journals are not satisfactory as 42 journals did not receive any citations for their articles published during 2011-2013. Indian library and information science (LIS) journals are not indexed in Web of Science (WoS) database and lately Scopus® database of Elsevier B.V. has indexed three Indian LIS journals. Hence, Google Scholar (GS) is the only available global database for the citation analysis of Indian LIS journals. Based on GS, this study has traced the citation and authorship patterns of selected LIS journals. Although, GS covers wide spectrum of scholarly literature worldwide, this study found that Indian LIS journals have low visibility even in GS database. In terms of citations, multiple-authored articles generally got more citations than the single-authored articles. Journals are the main vehicles for disseminating research publications and one can gauge the standard of research in the country through its publications. India has a growing population of researchers and academics who want to publish and search for easy outlets guaranteeing quick publication. Indian journals as a whole and LIS journals in particular fail miserably when it comes to maintaining quality. There should be a first received first reviewed and first published policy to be adopted by Indian LIS journals. Indian journal editors need to be more communicative with authors and they should adopt the best practices followed by the international journal editors. Indian LIS researchers have few journals and conference proceedings to publish their papers on the one hand and there is a need to publish more papers for professional progress. This has become important especially in the aftermath of the Academic Performance Indicators (APIs) introduced by the UGC after the VI Central Pay Revision where 55% of API scores can be claimed through publications. Through consortia based access, LIS researchers are exposed to what is being studied in the advanced countries. Thus more number of papers by LIS researchers from India are appearing in international journals. There are also many papers getting wasted in conference proceedings and festschrift volumes and editor interest driven book chapters. Such publications never have a wider reach and suffer from poor bibliographic control. Authors and researchers need to conserve their research output by opting for its wider dissemination and better visibility by opting to publish in quality journals and they can strengthen Indian journals only by publishing their best papers in these journals. The study presents an analysis of the number of articles published in Annals of Library and Information Studies (ALIS) and DESIDOC Journal of Library and Information Technology (DJLIT) during 2010-2013 and the citations obtained by these articles during 2010-2014 (April) using Google. The study develops immediacy index and impact factor of the two journals, besides, identifying the highly cited authors/papers. Findings reveal that DJLIT published more papers than ALIS and also received more citations. However, citation per paper for both the journals is almost equal. DJLIT have a better immediacy index than ALIS. Impact factor of both the journals was less than one in 2012; however, it increased in 2013 and was more than one in 2013. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Open access spurred by the Internet has brought in new vistas for dissemination of scholarly content in almost all the disciplines. It has enabled agencies, publishers and individuals to distribute scholarly content online, free from licensing restrictions and cost. The journal literature in the field of library and information science has grown exponentially. A few countries publish a good number of library and information science journals and India is also in the race. The study researches the growth and development of library and information science journals globally with special reference to India. This paper briefly traces the hundred years journey of Indian LIS periodicals. In all, 186 periodicals have been found to be published since 1912, of which 63 periodicals have ceased publication and the remaining 123 are continuing. The oldest periodical entitled Library Miscellany was started in the year 1912 from Baroda and ceased after eight years, in 1920. Another periodical entitled Granthalaya Sarvaswamu that started in 1915 from Vijayawada is still continuing. It is a bilingual periodical and publishes articles both in English and Telugu. This periodical may be reckoned as the oldest Indian LIS periodical today. A few of the periodicals are indexed in well known indexing, abstracting and bibliographic databases. It is observed that most journals were from Delhi followed by West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. Nearly eighty percent periodicals are in English, while 17% are multilingual (English with one or more regional languages). The leading regional language is Bengali followed by Marathi and Hindi. It is found that 78% periodicals appear in printed form, 10% in online electronic form and 12% publications appear in both printed and electronic form. Also, 93% periodicals are found as closed access publication, while only 7% are open access. Among Indian LIS periodicals, 35% are (quarterly) and 31% (bi-annual). The proportion of monthly and annual periodicals is 9% each. Mushrooming of open access LIS periodicals has been observed since 2010. The article examines 111 Library and Information Science (LIS) journals based on measurements of openness of publishing. It refers to the J.O.I. Factor (Journal Openness Index), a metric to rank journals. It urges LIS librarians and researchers to review literature and hold it to the principles and standards.

The author conducted a content analysis of papers submitted to the journal, Communications in Information Literacy, from the years 2007-2013. The purpose was to investigate and report on the overall quality characteristics of a statistically significant sample of papers submitted to a single-topic, open access, library and information science (LIS) journal. Characteristics of man-uscript submissions, authorship, reviewer evaluations, and editorial decisions were illuminated to provide context; particular emphasis was given to the analysis of major criticisms found in reviewer evaluations of rejected papers. Overall results were compared to previously published research. The findings suggest a trend in favor of collaborative authorship, and a possible trend toward a more practice-based literature. The findings also suggest a possible deterioration in some of the skills that are required of LIS authors relative to the preparation of scholarly papers. The author discusses potential implications for authors and the disciplinary literature, recom-mends directions for future research, and where possible, provides recommendations for the benefit of the greater community of LIS scholars.
