Abstract: The present study focuses on the selective synthesis of primary amines from aliphatic alcohols and ammonia using alumina-ceria supported nickel formulations based on very low nickel loading (≤2 wt%) and without any additive or external H 2 supply. The effect of the catalyst preparation methods and modes of nickel impregnation were studied in detail and comprehensively characterized. The best formulation afforded 80% n -octanol conversion with 78% selectivity to n -octylamine at optimized reaction conditions, which were far better than control catalysts and benchmark Ni-alumina formulations relying on high Ni loadings. The enhanced activities of the alumina-ceria supported nickel catalysts was attributed to three combined effects: (1) a higher reducibility of surface nickel oxide species, (2) the genesis of very small and homogeneously distributed nickel nanoparticles (2–3 nm), and (3) a strong decline in the formation of nickel aluminates. Furthermore, unlike benchmark Ni catalysts, these formulations afforded a higher resistance to leaching.

Abstract: On-site wastewater treatment systems are approved by the French regulation based on the results of platform tests following the European standard NF EN 12566-3. In addition to this approval for the treatment system, at least 90% of outlet concentrations have to be below 30 mg L−1 for total suspended solids (TSS) and 35 mg L−1 for biochemical oxygen demand. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effluent quality of these treatment systems on site, i.e. under real operating conditions, and to assess their performances. Between 2011 and 2016, 1,286 treated wastewater samples were taken from 231 on-site sanitation facilities in France. Data collected are heterogeneous and a robust statistical methodology (using a generalized log-linear model) was used to study the effects of four explanatory variables (treatment systems, loading rate, aging and sampling methods) on the distribution of treated wastewater concentrations. The model calculates median outlet concentrations depending on the effects identified. Its application allowed studying and comparing the outlet median concentrations of 21 on-site sanitation systems classified into nine categories and three groups. Four treatment systems out of the 21 monitored showed TSS median outlet concentrations below 10 mg L−1 and four treatment systems have TSS medians higher than the regulatory threshold of 30 mg L−1.

Abstract: The Kuiper Belt is a distant region of the Solar System. On 1 January 2019, the New Horizons spacecraft flew close to (486958) 2014 MU69, a Cold Classical Kuiper Belt Object, a class of objects that have never been heated by the Sun and are therefore well preserved since their formation. Here we describe initial results from these encounter observations. MU69 is a bi-lobed contact binary with a flattened shape, discrete geological units, and noticeable albedo heterogeneity. However, there is little surface color and compositional heterogeneity. No evidence for satellites, ring or dust structures, gas coma, or solar wind interactions was detected. Abstract: Furfural is a biomass derived compound used for the synthesis of fuels and chemicals. Herein we show that choline chloride allows the conversion of highly concentrated feeds of xylose (up to 50 wt%) to furfural (up to 75%) and that it can be recycled. Such a beneficial effect was observed from the formation of a choline xyloside intermediate exhibiting higher reactivity than xylose.

Abstract: SSCI-VIDE+ING+XBE:YSC:NOG; International audience; The hydrothermal conversion of eugenol over a Pt/C catalyst at temperatures between 250 and 300 degrees C in a water/ethanol mixture in the absence of gaseous H-2 was investigated using various catalysts. Under these conditions, the C=C double bond of the propenyl chain is hydrogenated, but the hydroxyl and methoxy groups of eugenol do not react. The reaction can be described by a two-step process. The first step is the isomerization of the double bond on the alkyl chain of eugenol. The second step is the hydrogenation of this double bond, hydrogen being supplied by ethanol, which is converted into acetaldehyde. The kinetics of the two-step process can be adequately described by a Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism with all components in quasi-adsorption equilibrium on a single site (Pt-s) and the surface steps as rate-determining.

Abstract: INGENIERIE+YSC:CMI:MGR; Thermal ageing has a significant detrimental effect on the behavior of bimetallic Pd-Rh natural gas fuelled vehicle (NGV) catalysts toward NO adsorption and its dissociation recognized as structure-sensitive. The ageing procedure at the lab-scale consisted of a thermal treatment under wet atmosphere (10 vol.% H2O in air) at 980 C that would induce comparable surface reconstructions taking place under real exhaust conditions of Pd-Rh/Al2O3 catalysts. XPS and FTIR of CO adsorption highlight the occurrence of simultaneous particle sintering and preferential surface Rh enrichment. Temporal analysis of product (TAP) experiments have been implemented for in situ characterization that allows the elucidation of surface reactions and diffusion processes taking place at the surface of Pd-Rh/Al2O3 when single NO pulse is introduced. It was found that the relative rates of those processes are strongly affected by the dispersion and the Rh composition on freshly-prepared and aged catalysts. Interestingly, Rh recognized as the most suitable noble metal to convert NO to N-2 would also slow down the agglomeration on Pd further protecting the metal/support interface. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: INGENIERIE+SAG:JEC:DFA; Two cobalt imidazolate metal-organic frameworks were evaluated as a bactericidal material against the growth of the Gram-negative bacteria Pseudomonas putida and Escherichia coil. Under the most unfavourable conditions, within the exponential growth phase and in the culture media for both microorganisms, the growth inhibition reached over 50% for concentrations of biocidal material in the 5(-10) mg L-1 range. The release of metal gives excellent durability with the antibacterial effect persisting after 3 months. Both cobalt-based materials can be prepared with simple, cheap and easily accessible commercial ligands, leading to a more affordable possible future application as antimicrobial materials. Abstract: AIR:INGENIERIE+AGF:SGI:ABA; In this work, we studied the catalytic activity of LaMnO3 and (La(0.8)A(0.2))MnO3 (A = Sr, K) perovskite catalysts for oxidation of NO and C10H22 and selective reduction of NO by C10H22. The catalytic performances of these perovskites were compared with that of a 2 wt% Pt/SiO2 catalyst. The La site substitution increased the catalytic properties for NO or C10H22 oxidation compared with the non-substituted LaMnO3 sample. For the most efficient perovskite catalyst, (La0.8Sr0.2)MnO3, the results showed the presence of two temperature domains for NO adsorption: (1) a domain corresponding to weakly adsorbed NO, desorbing at temperatures lower than 270 degrees C and (2) a second domain corresponding to NO adsorbed on the surface as nitrate species, desorbing at temperatures higher than 330 degrees C. For the Sr-substituted perovskite, the maximum NO2 yield of 80% was observed in the intermediate temperature domain (around 285 C). In the reactant mixture of NO/C10H22/O-2/H2O/He, (La0.8Sr0.2)MnO3 perovskite showed better performance than the 2 wt% Pt/SiO2 catalyst: NO2 yields reaching 50% and 36% at 290 and 370 degrees C, respectively. This activity improvement was found to be because of atomic scale interactions between the A and B active sites, Sr2+ cation and Mn4+/Mn3+ redox couple. Abstract: INGENIERIE+FRM; The condensation of ethanol to butanol was investigated over a commercial hydroxyapatite catalyst in the 350-410 degrees C temperature range. An analysis of thermodynamic and kinetic data, including the measure of the concentration of water and dihydrogen formed during the reaction, unambiguously revealed that the pathway involving acetaldehyde self-aldol condensation is irrelevant at such high temperatures for the present catalyst. At least two reaction pathways are suggested to take place simultaneously. The main pathway would involve the condensation of two ethanol molecules with apparently no intermediate gaseous compounds (so-called "direct" route). A minor "indirect" route would involve the condensation of ethanol with acetaldehyde (formed from ethanol dehydrogenation) to form butenol, which is subsequently converted to butanol by hydrogen transfer from a sacrificial ethanol molecule. This minor route would be less selective, resulting in the formation of acetaldehyde and H-2 as by-products. The alcohol condensation mechanism(s) taking place over basic oxides at high temperatures would therefore be fundamentally different from that taking place over bi-functional solids (containing both metallic and basic sites) at lower temperatures. In a more general context, this work underlines the benefits of considering thermodynamic data when assessing the relevance of potential reaction pathways. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract: International audience; This review article presents the fundamental and practical aspects of water adsorption in Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs). The state of the art of MOF stability in water, a crucial issue to many applications in which MOFs are promising candidates, is discussed here. Stability in both gaseous (such as humid gases) and aqueous media is considered. By considering a non-exhaustive yet representative set of MOFs, the different mechanisms of water adsorption in this class of materials are presented: reversible and continuous pore filling, irreversible and discontinuous pore filling through capillary condensation, and irreversibility arising from the flexibility and possible structural modifications of the host material. Water adsorption properties of more than 60 MOF samples are reported. The applications of MOFs as materials for heat-pumps and adsorbent-based chillers and proton conductors are also reviewed. Some directions for future work are suggested as concluding remarks.

Abstract: INGENIERIE+SAG:YSC:DFA; The number and strength of adsorption sites for Xe in silver-modified zeolites are estimated from isotherm measurements at various temperatures over a broad range of pressure (from 1 ppm to atmospheric pressure). Fully and partially exchanged silver zeolites were synthesized starting from Na-ZSM-5(25), Na-ZSM-5(40), Na-Beta, NaX, and NaY. We have discovered that silver-modified zeolites may present one or two distinct adsorption sites depending on the nature of the material and silver loadings. The strongest adsorption sites are characterized by isosteric heat of adsorption in the order of -40 to -50 kJ.mol(-1). For Pentasil-type zeolites, we observe a linear 2:1 correlation between the total amount of silver and the number of strong sites. The highest concentration of strong sites is found for fully silver exchanged ZSM-5 (5.7 X 10(-4) mol/g), which presents the largest silver content for Pentasil-type zeolite. The equilibrium constant of Ag-ZSM-5 at low pressure is about 50 times larger than that of AgX. Qualitative correlations were established between Xe adsorption isotherms and Xe NMR signals. We show that Xe NMR could be used as a quantitative method for the characterization of the strength and of the number of strong Xe adsorption sites on silver-exchanged zeolites. The numbers of strong adsorption sites responsible for the Xe adsorption at 10-1000 ppm can be determined by the length of the plateau observed at low Xe uptake. In practice, our findings give guidelines for the discovery and optimization of silver-loaded zeolites for the capture of Xe at ppm levels. It appears that the amount of silver is a key parameter. Silver-modified ZSM-5 shows adsorption capacities 2-3 orders of magnitude larger than currently applied adsorbents for atmospheric Xe capture.

Abstract: INGENIERIE+ABB:CMI; Specificity of CH4 dry reforming mechanism for Me-supported doped ceria-zirconia catalysts with high oxygen mobility was elucidated using a combination of transient kinetic methods (TAP, SSITKA) with pulse microcalorimetry and in situ FTIRS. Steady-state reaction of CH4 dry reforming is described by a simple redox scheme with independent stages of CH4 and CO2 activation. This is provided by easy CO2 dissociation on reduced sites of oxide supports followed by a fast oxygen transfer along the surface/domain boundaries to metal sites where CH4 molecules are transformed to CO and H-2. The rate-limiting stage is irreversible transformation of CH4 on metal sites, while CO2 transformation proceeds much faster being reversible for steady-state surface. The oxygen forms responsible for CH4 selective transformation into syngas correspond to strongly bound bridging oxygen species with heats of desorption approximate to 600-650 kJ/mol O-2, most probably bound with pairs of Pr and/or Ce cations able to change their oxidation state. Ni + Ru clusters could be involved in CO2 activation via facilitating C-O bond breaking in the transition state, thus increasing the rate constant of the surface reoxidation by CO2. Strongly bound carbonates are spectators.

Abstract: AIR:MATERIAUX:INGENIERIE+YIC:YGU:PVE; Herein, we report the Pd-doped perovskite La0.7Sr0.3CoO3 as an effective lean NOx trap (LNT) catalyst. This smart perovskite displays excellent NOx reduction activities for lean-burn exhausts (NOx conversion >90%, N-2 selectivity >90%) over a wide operating temperature range (275-400 degrees C), as well as an extremely high sulfur tolerance. Our results evidenced Pd dissolving into or segregating out of perovskite in lean-burn and fuel-rich atmospheres. The segregated metallic Pd from perovskite in fuel-rich atmospheres is crucial for obtaining these promising achievements. These findings provide a new possibility for the application of the Pd-based LNT catalysts.

Abstract: INGENIERIE+YSC:CMI:MGR; This paper deals with the aging effect on the kinetics of the NO decomposition on a commercial Pd/Al2O3 catalyst. Temporal analysis of products experiments are discussed in the light of a selected mechanism involving the recombination of two NOads species to form N2O, which is an intermediate in N-2 formation. Experiments over the fresh catalyst indicate a strong metal/support interface, with a spill-over effect, which is difficult to model. Thermal aging had a detrimental effect over this interface, the kinetic features depending mainly on the metallic Pd sites. The different heats of adsorption and activation energies are proven consistent with other theoretical studies. The mechanism led to a high surface coverage for O ad-atoms.

Abstract: INGENIERIE+JEC:SAG:YSC:DFA; The one-pot postfunctionalization allows anchoring a molecular nickel complex into a mesoporous metal-organic framework (Ni@(Fe)MIL-101). It is generating a very active and reusable catalyst for the liquid-phase ethylene dimerization to selectively form 1-butene. Higher selectivity for 1-butene is found using the Ni@(Fe)MIL-101 catalyst than reported for molecular nickel diimino complexes.

For catalysts in the steady-state, CH4 and CO2 transformation in separate pulses proceeds with the rate and products selectivity equal to that in mixed CO2 + CH4 pulses. Heat effects of separate stages correspond to CH4 oxidation into syngas by strongly bound bridging oxygen forms of support (heat of adsorption up to 650 kJ mol(-1) O-2 for fluorites and similar to 500 kJ mol(-1) O-2 for perovskites) and their replenishment by CO2 dissociation, respectively. These features demonstrate a step-wise red-ox (Marsvan-Crevelen) mechanism of CH4 dry reforming. Fast oxygen transfer from the sites of oxide support to the metal/oxide interface provides required conjugation of stages. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: INGENIERIE+EKO:TLE:DFA; Carbide-derived carbons (CDC) with incorporated transition metal nanoparticles (similar to 2.5 nm) were prepared using a microemulsion approach. Time-consuming post synthesis functionalization of the carbon support material can thus be avoided and nanoparticle sizes can be controlled by changing the microemulsion composition. This synthesis strategy is a technique for the preparation of highly porous carbon materials with a catalytically active component. In particular we investigated the integration of ruthenium, palladium, and platinum in a concentration ranging from 4.45 to 12 wt.%. It was found that the transition metal has a considerable influence on sorption properties of resulting nanoparticle-CDC composite materials. Depending on the used metal salt additive the surface area and the pore volume ranges from 1480 m(2)/g and 1.25 cm(3)/g for Pt to 2480 m(2)/g and 2.0 cm(3)/g for Ru doped carbons. Moreover, members of this material class show impressive properties as heterogeneous catalysts. The liquid phase oxidation of tetralin and the partial oxidation of methane were studied, and electrochemical applications were also investigated. Primarily Pt doped CDCs are highly active in the oxygen reduction reaction, which is of great importance in present day fuel cell research. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract: This work reports a detailed study of CO2 and N2 adsorption and diffusion pathways on MFI-alumina hollow fibres and their role on both pure and mixture CO2/N2 permeation. The hollow fibres have been prepared by pore-plugging hydrothermal synthesis starting from a clear solution with molar composition 1 SiO2: 0.45 TPAOH: 27·8H2O: xB(OH)3 (x=0–0.02), showing a final nanocomposite architecture. A comprehensive screening has been performed to select the most suitable model for describing CO2 and N2 adsorption and pure permeation in the (B)-MFI-alumina hollow fibres. The classical Ideal Adsorption Solution Theory (IAST) has been implemented to different permeation models to account for binary CO2/N2 permeation within the fibres.

Abstract: Desert dust plays an important role in the climate system through its impact on Earth¿s radiative budget and its role in the biogeochemical cycle as a source of iron in highnutrient- low-chlorophyll regions. A large degree of diversity exists between the many global models that simulate the dust cycle to estimate its impact on climate. We present the results of a broad intercomparison of a total of 15 global aerosol models within the AeroCom project. Each model is compared to observations focusing on variables responsible for the uncertainties in estimating the direct radiative effect and the dust impact on the biogeochemical cycle, i.e., aerosol optical depth (AOD) and dust deposi10 tion. Additional comparisons to Angstro¨m Exponent (AE), coarse mode AOD and dust surface concentration are included to extend the assessment of model performance. These datasets form a benchmark data set which is proposed for model inspection and future dust model developments. In general, models perform better in simulating climatology of vertically averaged integrated parameters (AOD and AE) in dusty sites 15 than they do with total deposition and surface concentration. Almost all models overestimate deposition fluxes over Europe, the Indian Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean and ice core data. Differences among the models arise when simulating deposition at remote sites with low fluxes over the Pacific and the Southern Atlantic Ocean. This study also highlights important differences in models ability to reproduce the deposition flux over Antarctica. The cause of this discrepancy could not be identified but different dust regimes at each site and issues with data quality should be considered. Models generally simulate better surface concentration at stations downwind of the main sources than at remote ones. Likewise, they simulate better surface concentration at stations affected by Saharan dust than at stations affected by Asian dust. Most models simulate the gradient in AOD and AE between the different dusty regions, however the seasonality and magnitude of both variables is better simulated at African stations than Middle East ones. The models also reproduce the dust transport across the Atlantic in terms of both AOD and AE; they simulate the offshore transport of West Africa throughout the year and limit the transport across the Atlantic to the summer months, yet overestimating the AOD and transporting too fine particles. However, most of the models do not reproduce the southward displacement of the dust cloud during the winter responsible of the transport of dust into South America. Based on the dependency of AOD on aerosol 5 burden and size distribution we use model data bias with respect to AOD and AE and infer on the over/under estimation of the dust emissions. According to this we suggest the emissions in the Sahara be between 792 and 2271 Tg/yr and the one in the Middle East between 376 and 526 Tg/yr., JRC.DDG.H.2-Climate change and air quality

Abstract: In this paper, a report on modelling and sensitivity studies of a laboratory-scale extractor type catalytic membrane reactor having a nanocomposite MFI-alumina membrane tube as separation unit is presented. Meta-xylene isomerization over Pt-HZSM-5 catalyst was conducted in the reactor and the results compared with model output. Sensitivity of the model to changes in certain design parameters (membrane thickness, membrane porosity, membrane tortuosity and reactor size) was evaluated for in-depth understanding of the fundamental behaviour of the system during m-Xylene isomerization. The model output deviated from the experimental results with percentage errors of 17%, 29%, 0.05% and 19.5% for p-Xylene yield in combined mode, p-Xylene selectivity in combined mode, p-Xylene selectivity in permeate-only mode and m-Xylene conversion, respectively. Despite the discrepancy between the experimental results and the model output due to the to quality of data employed in the simulation and assumptions adopted for model simplification, the model could explain the behaviour of e-ZCMR during m-Xylene isomerization over Pt-HZSM-5 catalyst and also adaptable to e-ZCMRs of different configurations such as hollow fibre MFI-alumina membrane-based e-ZCMRs. However, acquisition of accurate kinetics and diffusion data through experimentation is essential to improve on the model. As expected, the sensitivity analysis revealed that membrane porosity, membrane tortuosity, membrane effective thickness and reactor size play a significant role on the performance of the e-ZCMR during the isomerization. Although, this model is of a preliminary nature, still it provides useful assistance in understanding the fundamental behaviour of e-ZCMR during m-Xylene isomerization and offers a platform upon which further modelling studies on m-Xylene isomerization in e-ZCMR can be built.

Abstract: The identification of reaction surface intermediates in the high-temperature water-gas shift reaction on iron oxide unpromoted and promoted MgO, SiO 2 and TiO 2 has been studied via diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The dosing of the gas mixture CO + H 2 O onto reduced Fe 2 O 3 /MgO as a function of reaction temperature produced formate species (1720, 1630 and 1370 cm −1 ) as a surface intermediate. On reduced Fe 2 O 3 /TiO 2 only bands characteristic of carbonate species (1630 and 1550 cm −1 ) are observed. A direct correlation between catalytic activity and acid/base properties of our catalysts is established. The Fe 2 O 3 /MgO basic catalyst is 100 times more active than the acidic catalyst Fe 2 O 3 /SiO 2 .

Abstract: Carbon dioxide capture from processes is one of the strategies adopted to decrease anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. To lower the cost associated with the regeneration of amine-based scrubber systems, one of the envisaged strategies is the grafting of amines onto high-surface-area supports and, in particular, onto metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In this study, the interaction between CO(2) and aliphatic and aromatic amines has been characterized by quantum mechanical methods (MP2), focusing attention both on species already reported in MOFs and on new amine-based linkers, to inspire the rational synthesis of new high-capacity MOFs. The calculations highlight binding-site requisites and indicate that CO(2) vibrations are independent of the adsorption energy and monitoring them in probe-molecule experiments is not a suitable marker of efficient adsorption.

Abstract: National @ INGENIERIE+SLI:CAQ:LGU:DFA:YSC; International audience; Carbon monoxide separation from light hydrocarbon is difficult, especially with methane and olefins. The selective oxidation of carbon monoxide to CO2 at high conversion level is an attractive solution since CO2 removal technologies show better performances. The challenge is to prevent the conversion of hydrocarbons while the CO oxidation proceeds. Therefore the development of a highly selective catalyst is necessary. Pt@silicalite 1 yolk-shell material with a monocrystalline zeolitic shell was prepared1. A single Pt nanoparticle is encapsulated in each hollow ultrathin silicalite-1 shell which can act as a molecular sieving membrane (Fig. 1a). The CO oxidation in the presence of propylene was performed with Pt@Silicalite 1 and compared to the reference Pt/SiO2. With the latter, the CO conversion significantly drops in the presence of propylene due to strong poisoning of Pt site by CO. On Pt@silicalite 1, we show that full conversion of CO is achieved while propylene is not oxidized (Fig. 1b). Although CO and propylene can in principle diffuse through the silicalite-1 shell, we will show that selectivity of the reaction is governed by the transport properties through the zeolite shell.

Abstract: International @ INGENIERIE+FRM; International audience; The condensation of ethanol to butanol was investigated over a commercial hydroxyapatite catalyst in the 350-410°C temperature range. An analysis of thermodynamic and kinetic data, including the measure of the concentration of water and dihydrogen formed during the reaction, unambiguously revealed that the pathway involving acetaldehyde self-aldol condensation is irrelevant at such high temperatures for the present catalyst. Two reaction pathways are suggested. The main pathway (so-called direct route) refers to the condensation of two ethanol molecules with apparently no intermediate gaseous compounds. A minor indirect route involves the condensation of ethanol with acetaldehyde (formed from ethanol dehydrogenation) to form butenol, which is subsequently converted to butanol by hydrogen transfer from a sacrificial ethanol molecule. This minor route would be less selective, resulting in the formation of acetaldehyde and H2 as by-products. The alcohol condensation mechanism(s) taking place over basic oxides at high temperatures would therefore be fundamentally different from that taking place over bi-functional solids (containing both metallic and basic sites) at lower temperatures. In a more general context, this work underlines the benefits of considering thermodynamic data when assessing the relevance of potential reaction pathways.

Abstract: International @ INGENIERIE+AMS:YSC:FRM; International audience; PtxSn based catalysts have presented exhibit enhanced activities for preferential CO oxidation (PROX) as compared to analogous Pt catalysts. Yet, often ill-defined PtSn phases present on the catalyst prevent a full understanding of the reaction mechanism and active sites involved. Therefore we used for this study well-defined Pt and Pt3Sn catalysts, obtained by impregnation of pre-formed Pt or Pt3Sn nanoparticles [1]. Our 1% Pt3Sn/?-Al2O3 and 1% Pt/?-Al2O3 catalysts were used in the CO PROX. Experiments were carried out under controlled conditions to obtain intrinsic kinetics. Additionally an investigation of CO adsorption under the reaction mixture was carried out by operando DRIFTS over the samples. An unusual evolution of the adsorbed CO was noted while ramping up the temperature.

Abstract: International @ INGENIERIE+SDA:NOG; International audience; We investigated the influence of the acid-base properties of TiO2-based supports on the performances of Pd-Cu catalysts for nitrates hydrogenation in water. TiO2 supports doped with Mg or Nb (1-7 wt.%) were prepared by co-hydrolysis of metal alkoxides. The surface area increased and the crystallinity decreased for Mg- and Nb-doped TiO2, all solids exhibiting mesoporosity with average pore sizes smaller than 20 nm. Mg-doping introduces a strong basic character whereas Nb-doped TiO2 becomes acidic. Pd-Cu bimetallic catalysts supported on TiO2 and Mg- or Nb-TiO2 were found very active for the catalytic hydrogenation of nitrates, but the selectivity to ammonium was high. Nb-doping slightly decreased the reactivity of nitrates, Mg-doping improved the reactivity of nitrites, but the selectivity to ammoniums was only marginally modified. The activity and products selectivity were only moderately affected by the properties of the support, which suggests that this property is not relevant to the reaction mechanism.

Abstract: National @ INGENIERIE+APN:DLR:NOG:YSC:FRM; International audience; Synthetic fuels and base chemicals can be obtained from both fossil and renewable sources through the conversion of synthesis gas (syngas, a mixture of carbon oxides and dihydrogen). Understanding the selectivity pattern to various products of interest of a given catalyst is paramount to derive structure/activity relationship. Operando DRIFT (diffuse reflectance FT-IR) spectroscopy can be of help to determine the relevance of surface species in the formation of products. In the case of a Co-Mg-O sample, it was shown that the surface formates species observed by DRIFTS were irrelevant in the formation of ethane [1]. A new setup was developed combining a DRIFTS reaction cell for operando surface characterisation and an IR gas cell and mass spectrometer for the on-line analysis of the reactor cell effluents (Fig. 1). DRIFTS spectra of excellent quality (see carbonyls and formates bands in Fig. 1) could be obtained in 10 s with less than 10 mg of sample, for which the contribution of gas-phase CO could be perfectly subtracted. The IR-cell exhibited a 2 m-long pathlength that enabled measuring concentration of reaction products in the ppm range. The system could thus be operated under differential conditions and the primary reaction products could be detected. The system can be operated up to 5 bars of absolute pressure. Preliminary results collected over a Co-based catalyst (Fig. 2) show that the reaction order in CO was globally positive and methane and propene were the main reaction products, while only trace amounts of methanol were detected. Abstract: International @ INGENIERIE+DFA; International audience; The anode deactivation by coking for hydrocarbon-feed SOFC is a chief obstacle towards industrialization. All Porous Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (AP-SOFC) is the latest technology allowing the controlled distribution of gaseous O2 at anode side, thus preventing deactivation and generating heat by auto-thermal reforming. The oxygen distribution is controlled by the porosity of a CGO electrolyte. In this AP-SOFC, the oxidative reforming of hydrocarbon streams consequently operate in a similar fashion to single chamber SOFC, but within a safer and better controlled process [1]. In our first electrolyte supported AP-SOFC, the peak power output only reached ~20 mW cm-2 with methane as fuel due to the large thickness of the porous electrolyte (2 mm). In this study, we show a 10-fold peak power output using a second generation AP-SOFC based on anode-supported porous thin-film CGO electrolyte (Fig. 1). In single cell test, stable OCV of 0.82V was obtained over 160 hours (Fig. 2). Moreover, continuous and stable operation in dry 6% propane for more than 120 hours without observable degradation in OCV was obtained, whereas the cell performance degraded almost 35% for dual chamber SOFC with dense CGO electrolyte only after 10 hours [2].

Abstract: International @ INGENIERIE+CDA:YSC:FRM; International audience; H2 can be produced from organic waste fermentation and CO2 is formed alongside in large concentrations in some cases. There is an interest in understanding any effects that CO2 could have on a catalytic reaction in which the biomass-derived H2 is used, as traces of CO2 may remain even after purification. An alumina-supported platinum catalyst used for toluene hydrogenation at low-temperature (i.e. 348 K) was fully and permanently deactivated upon CO2 introduction in a H2/toluene feed [1]. Strongly-bound carbonyl species were observed by operando diffuse reflectance FTIR spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and were shown to irreversibly poison the Pt surface sites. The DRIFTS operando data were crucial in revealing the origin of the deactivation, since no measurable concentration of CO could be observed in the reactor effluents. A Rh/alumina (with a Rh dispersion of 55%) was shown to be only partly deactivated by the introduction of 1.7% CO2 during the hydrogenation of toluene, contrary to the case of Pt/alumina. The Rh surface was only partially covered by carbonyl species derived from the CO2 (Fig. 1, left) and toluene could successfully compete for adsorption with some of the linearly adsorbed CO [2]. The DRIFTS data suggested that the most resistant sites were Rh atoms from low index plans. A Rh/silica with a Rh dispersion of 19% essentially showed no deactivation by CO2. No carbonyl could be observed under a feed containing 10 % CO2 (Fig. 1, left). Carbonyls formed from CO adsorption at 348 K were readily removed when toluene was introduced, while those were stable under Ar (Fig. 1, right). The exceptional resistance of the Rh/Silica was related to both (i) a lower ability to adsorb and dissociate CO2 and (ii) a large fraction of dense plan Rh atoms on which toluene successfully competes with CO for adsorption.

Abstract: AIR:RAFFINAGE:INGENIERIE:SURFACES+FGI:CGE:NOG:SLO:DBI; The present article is dedicated to the impacts of sulfatation and/or VxOy deposition on TiO2 supports on the individual heats of adsorption of adsorbed NH3 species. The S and V loadings are similar to those of TiO2 based commercial catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3: NH3-SCR. Two original experimental procedures are used, namely, adsorption equilibrium infrared spectroscopy (AEIR) and temperature-programmed adsorption equilibrium (TPAE). They have been developed in previous works and adapted in Part 1 for the species formed by the adsorption of NH3 on a sulfate free TiO2 support (P25 from Degussa). In agreement with the literature, Raman and FTIR spectroscopies show that the impregnation of the sulfate-free and sulfated TiO2 supports by the vanadium precursor leads to well-dispersed VxOy species, which are involved in the adsorption of NH3 in the temperature T-a range of 300-673 K and for adsorption P-a < 0.5 IcPa. Sulfate and VxOy groups favor the amount of NH4+ species without modifying their heats of adsorption as compared to the TiO2, support: they are not detected for temperatures of interest for NH3-SCR reaction. In these experimental conditions and whatever the solids, two main adsorbed NH3 species on Lewis sites (denoted NH3ads.L1 and NH3ads.L2) are present, characterized by two delta(s) IR bands below 1300 cm(-1) and a common delta(as), IR band at approximate to 1600 cm(-1). By comparison with TiO2, P25; it is shown that sulfate groups have strong impacts neither on the proportion, x(1) and x(2),, of the two adsorbed species nor on their heats of adsorption (E-L1 (theta) and E-L2(theta) with theta the coverage of the NH3ads.L1 and NH3ads-L2 species: x(1) = 0.65, x(2) = 035, E-L1 (1) = 56 kJ/mol, E-L1(0) = 102 kJ/mol, E-L2(1) = 110 kJ/mol, E-L2(0) = 140 kJ/mol. The deposition of V-containing species on the sulfate-free and sulfated TiO2 surfaces leads to similar conclusions: in the experimental conditions (Ta and Pa) of the NH3-SCR, two adsorbed NH3 species on Lewis sites are detected with comparable proportions and heats of adsorption to those observed on the TiO2 supports.

44. Oligopeptide grafting in MOF for enantioselective applications

Abstract: International @ INGENIERIE+JOB:JEC:DFA; International audience; Grafting of chiral species such as amino-acids inside MOF cavities [1] allows designing enzyme-like materials [2]. Covalent post-synthetic modification is a powerful tool to increase the sophistication degree in porous materials. We report here, for the first time, the application of a microwave-assisted solid phase peptide coupling strategy in order to immobilize chiral amino-acids inside amino-functionalized MOF frameworks. Through the use of microwave irradiation, the peptide coupling is 500 times faster with a gain in active site loading. Both enantiopure L-proline and D-proline-glycine are successfully anchored into the MOF cavities through a microwave-assisted coupling-deprotection sequence. The coupling was performed on various MOF structures such as MIL-101, MIL-68 and UiO-66. The characterization showed that after coupling the structures remain crystalline and porous. This new microwave-assisted solid-phase peptide coupling methodology opens new perspectives for anchoring chiral bio active species within MOFs for molecular recognition, bio-sensing applications and asymmetric catalysis.

Abstract: INGENIERIE+JEC:DFA; Recently, the use of mixtures of organic-building-block linkers has given chemists an additional degree of freedom for engineering metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with specific properties; however, the poor characterization of the chemical complexity of such MixMOF structures by conventional techniques hinders the verification of rational design. Herein, we describe the application of a technique known as photothermal induced resonance to individual MixMOF microcrystals to elucidate their chemical composition with nanoscale resolution. Results show that MixMOFs isoreticular to In-MIL-68, obtained either directly from solution or by postsynthetic linker exchange, are homogeneous down to approximately 100nm. Additionally, we report a novel in situ process that enables the engineering of anisotropic domains in MOF crystals with submicron linker-concentration gradients.

Abstract: INGENIERIE+NOG:CMI; On-board reforming of liquid fuels is attractive for fuel cell-powered auxiliary power units in vehicles. In this work, monometallic Ni/Al2O3/cordierite, Rh/Al2O3/cordierite and bimetallic Ni-Rh/Al2O3/cordierite monolithic catalysts were prepared, characterized and tested in ATR of isooctane for syngas production. Compared to monometallic formulations, the bimetallic Ni-Rh/Al2O3 catalyst was active for ATR at lower temperature and H-2 production already reached the equilibrium composition in 400-550 degrees C temperature range. The Ni-Ph/Al2O3 catalyst exhibited stable performances for 140 h in ATR of isooctane at 700 degrees C, and was unaffected by oxidizing conditions at 700 degrees C. Thermoneutral reactions conditions at H2O/C = 2 were obtained with O/C = 0.66. Carbon deposition was marginal during ATR of isooctane and no carbons whiskers were detected. Post-reaction characterizations showed that the Ni particles were small enough to prevent filamentous carbon formation, while Rh also prevented carbon film deposition by improving the gasification of adsorbed C with steam. Abstract: INGENIERIE+MPE; ZIF-7, built as an assembly of Zn-II centers and benzimidazolate ligands, shows prominent S-shaped isotherms upon CO2 adsorption that can be attributed to sorbate-induced gate-opening phenomena involving a narrow-to-large pore phase transition. This peculiar sorption pattern can be captured via the formulation of thermodynamic isotherms, providing a direct enthalpic and entropic view of the gate-opening process. Relying on such an approach, an energy barrier with preferential enthalpic nature for CO2 adsorption/desorption in the gate-opening region could be unveiled. Moreover, the elastic energy involved during the gate-opening process was revisited to 1.4-2.8 kJ mol(-1) of solid in the temperature range 273-323 K, matching the value measured by isostatic compression of a ZIF-7_lp sample filled with DMF and showing a dominant entropic contribution.

Abstract: INGENIERIE+SAD:MPE; A new model coupling the convection-diffusion equations for mass transfer and the Kubelka-Munk model for UV penetration is presented for describing the photocatalytic degradation of volatile organic compounds in titania-loaded papers. The model has been validated using a broad collection of ethanol degradation data measured on 10 different paper sheets incorporating titania-anchored hollow silica into the cellulose fibers with a wide spectra of basis weights and TiO2/SiO2 loadings, and operated at different ethanol concentrations, superficial velocities, UV intensities and configuration modes (i.e. counter- and co-current). Only two parameters were fitted, namely the intensity-independent kinetic constant and the adsorption constant of ethanol over TiO2. The simulated UV intensity profiles suggest a strong UV attenuation within the paper thickness, limiting the irradiated TiO2 to less than 30% of the available loading. Both the counter- and co-current configuration modes show comparable results in terms of photocatalytic activity, but with marked differences in terms of concentration and diffusive flow patterns. As a result, matching the general assumptions in the literature, mass transfer in co-current configuration approaches to a continuous stirred-tank reactor under Perfect Mixture, most of the photocatalytic activity being localized near the paper inlet. Our simulations reflect potential improvements in terms of activity by mitigating UV attenuation (especially UV scattering) in the papers. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
