Abstract: It is shown that the Born–Oppenheimer–Huang non-adiabatic coupling terms (NACTs) in a molecular Hamiltonian can be considered as equivalent to a friction force in classical mechanics and consequently responsible for the formation of triatomic species like HeH 2 + . The classical equation of motion is solved accordingly for a test case of a helium atom approaching an H 2 + molecule at its potential minimum along the collinear axis and lines parallel to it and also for the C 2 v geometry. It is shown that the singular NACTs between the first two excited states slow down the motion of the three quasi-ions (He, H, H) + while approaching each other and result in substantial loss of kinetic energy in the collision process. These results have profound implications for the formation of di- and triatomic species in the early universe, during the chemical synthesis epoch following the nucleosynthesis that followed the Big Bang. 3. Rotational de-excitation of tricarbon monosulfide (C3S) in collision with (He): potential energy surface and rates.

Abstract: Despite that the tricarbon monosulfide (C3S) is among the first sulfur-containing carbon-chain molecules to be detected in the interstellar medium, no studies focused on the determination of its collisional rates. These rate coefficients are essential to estimate the abundance of C3S in the interstellar medium. Computations of the C3S( Σ + 1 ) downward rate coefficients, induced by collision with He, are performed by averaging the integral cross sections at low temperature (below 25 K ). Calculations of the cross sections in the close-coupling quantum time independent formalism for E c ≤ 110 cm − 1 and J ≤ 10 are based on a new 2-D potential energy surface. This PES is obtained from the explicit correlated coupled cluster with a single, double and perturbative triple excitation [ccsd(t)-f12] ab initio approach and the aug-cc-pVTZ basis sets. The PES have a global minimum of − 55.69 cm − 1 located at R = 6.25 bohr and θ = 94 ∘ , and a second minimum of − 36.95 cm − 1 at R = 9.35 bohr and θ = 0 ∘ . A comparison of C3S rates with those of the isoelectronic molecule C3O was made. The results indicate a great temperature dependence of the rates for transitions of Δ J > 2 . We expect that the new collisional data will allow for accurate determination of the C3S abundance in several interstellar regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Publisher Copyright: © 2022 The Author(s) Absolute cross-section values are reported from high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoabsorption measurements of gas-phase formic acid (HCOOH) in the photon energy range 4.7–10.8 eV (265–115 nm), together with quantum chemical calculations to provide vertical energies and oscillator strengths. The combination of experimental and theoretical methods has allowed a comprehensive assignment of the electronic transitions. The VUV spectrum reveals various vibronic features not previously reported in the literature, notably associated with (3pa′←10a′), (3p′a′←10a′), (3sa′←2a″) and (3pa′←2a″) Rydberg transitions. The assignment of vibrational features in the absorption bands reveal that the C=O stretching, v3′a′, the H′–O–C′ deformation, v5′a′, the C–O stretching, v6′a′, and the O=C–O′ deformation, v7′a′ modes are mainly active. The measured absolute photoabsorption cross sections have also been used to estimate the photolysis lifetime of HCOOH in the upper stratosphere (30–50 km), showing that solar photolysis is an important sink at altitudes above 30 km but not in the troposphere. Potential energy curves for the lowest-lying electronic excited states, as a function of the C=O coordinate, are obtained employing time dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). These calculations have shown the relevance of internal conversion from Rydberg to valence character governing the nuclear dynamics, yielding clear evidence of the rather complex multidimensional nature of the potential energy surfaces involved. publishersversion published

Abstract: The increasing sensitivity and resolution of ground-based telescopes have enabled the detection of gas-phase complex organic molecules (COMs) across a variety of environments. Many of the detected species are expected to form on the icy surface of interstellar grains and transfer later into the gas phase. Therefore, icy material is regarded as a primordial source of COMs in the ISM. Upcoming JWST observations of interstellar ices in star-forming regions will reveal IR features of frozen molecules with unprecedented resolution and sensitivity. To identify COM features in the JWST data, lab IR spectra of ices for conditions that simulate interstellar environments are needed. This work presents FTIR spectra (500-4000 cm$^{-1}$/20-2.5$\mu$m, with a resolution of 1 cm$^{-1}$) of methyl cyanide (CH$_3$CN, aka acetonitrile) mixed with H$_2$O, CO, CO$_2$, CH$_4$, and NH$_3$, at temperatures from 15-150 K. The refractive index of pure amorphous CH$_3$CN ice at 15K and the band strength, peak position, and FWHM of selected IR bands are also measured. These bands are: the CH$_3$ sym stretching at 2940.9 cm$^{-1}$, the CN stretching at 2252.2 cm$^{-1}$, a combination of modes at 1448.3 cm$^{-1}$ , the CH$_3$ antisym def. at 1410 cm$^{-1}$ , the CH$_3$ sym def. at 1374.5 cm$^{-1}$, and the CH$_3$ rock at 1041.6 cm$^{-1}$. The lab spectra of CH$_3$CN are compared to observations of ices toward W33A and three low-mass YSOs. Since an unambiguous identification of CH$_3$CN is not possible, upper limits for the CH$_3$CN column density are determined as $\leq 2.4\times 10^{17}$ molecules cm$^{-2}$ for W33A and $5.2 \times 10^{16}$, $1.9\times 10^{17}$, and $3.8\times 10^{16}$ molecules cm$^{-2}$ for EC92, IRAS 03235, and L1455 IRS3, respectively. 6. Observations of the CH3OH 42–51 E Line Toward the Sgr B2 Region

Abstract: The CH3OH 4_2–5_1 E transition was observed toward the Sgr B2 region, including the Principal Cloud and its surroundings. This methanol transition shows an extended emission along the 2’N cloud, which is believed to be colliding with the Principal Cloud and may trigger the massive star formation in this cloud. This extended methanol emission may also suggest that the 2’N cloud is under shocks. We derive total methanol column density N(CH3OH) = 2.9 ±0.3 × 10^14 cm–2 toward the peak position of the extended emission. The fractional abundance of methanol is about 10–9, relative to the estimated total H2 abundance, which is similar to the methanol abundances in quiet gas phase.

Abstract: Several diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) have profiles with resolved sub-peaks that resemble rotational bands of large molecules. Analysis of these profiles can constrain the sizes and geometries of the DIB carriers, especially if the profiles exhibit clear variations along lines of sight probing different physical conditions. Using the extensive data set from the EDIBLES survey we searched for systematic variations in the peak-to-peak separation of these sub-peaks for the $\lambda\lambda$5797, 6379, and 6614 DIBs in lines of sight with a single dominant interstellar cloud. We used the spectra of twelve single-cloud sight lines to measure the peak-to-peak separation in the band profile substructures for these DIBs. We adopted the rotational contour formalism to infer the rotational constant for each DIB carrier and the rotational excitation temperature in the sight lines. We compared these to rotational constants for linear and spherical molecules to estimate the DIB carrier sizes. All three DIBs have peak separations that vary systematically between lines of sight, indicating correlated changes in the rotational excitation temperatures. We derived $B_{6614}$=$(22.2\pm8.9)\times 10^{-3}$ cm$^{-1}$, consistent with previous estimates. Assuming a similar rotational temperature for the $\lambda$6614 DIB carrier and assuming a linear carrier, we found B$_{5797}^{\rm linear}=(5.1\pm2.0)\times10^{-3}~{\rm cm}^{-1}$ and B$_{6379}^{\rm linear} =(2.3\pm0.9)\times10^{-3}~{\rm cm}^{-1}$. If the carriers of those DIBs however are spherical species, their rotational constants are half that value, $B_{5797}^{\rm spherical} = (2.6\pm1.0)\times10^{-3}~{\rm cm}^{-1}$ and $B_{6379}^{\rm spherical} = (1.1\pm0.4)\times10^{-3}~{\rm cm}^{-1}$. Abstract: A high spectral resolution investigation of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) in the near-infrared ($YJ$ band) is conducted to test new methods, to confirm and improve existing parameters, and to search for new DIBs. Methods: The CRyogenic high-resolution InfraRed Echelle Spectrograph (CRIRES) on the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope was employed to obtain spectra of four reddened background supergiant stars (HD 183143, HD 165784, HD 92207, HD 111613) and an unreddened comparison star (HD 87737) at the highest resolution of $R \approx 100000$ currently achievable at near-infrared wavelengths. The correction for telluric absorption was performed by a modelling approach. Non-local thermodynamic equilibrium spectral modelling of available optical and the new near-infrared spectra facilitated a comprehensive characterisation of the atmospheric properties of the background stars. A more precise and accurate determination of the reddening law along the sight lines could be achieved than feasible before by comparison of the observed and model spectral energy distributions. For DIBs that overlap with stellar lines the DIB profile shapes could be recovered. Results: Seventeen known near-infrared DIBs were confirmed, and 12 previously unknown and generally weaker DIBs were identified in the $YJ$ band. Three DIBs that show uniform profiles along all sight lines were identified, possibly connected to transitions from a common lower state of the same carrier. The divergent extinction curve towards the frequently discussed DIB standard star HD 183143 could be reproduced for the first time, requiring extra absorption by $\sim$3.5 mag due to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to match the ultraviolet extinction bump. 10. Importance of source structure on complex organics emission. II

Abstract: Some protostellar systems show little or no millimetre line emission of complex organics. This can be interpreted as a low abundance of these molecules, alternatively they could be present in the system but are not seen in the gas. The goal is to investigate the latter hypothesis for methanol. We will attempt to answer the question: Does the presence of a disk and optically thick dust reduce methanol emission even if methanol is abundant in the ices and gas? Using the radiative transfer code RADMC-3D, methanol emission lines from an envelope-only model and an envelope-plus-disk model are calculated and compared with each other and the observations. Methanol emission from the envelope-only model is always stronger than from the envelope-plus-disk model by at least a factor 2 as long as the disk radius is larger than 30 au (for L=8 L$_{\odot}$). In most cases, this is due to lower temperatures and, hence, the smaller amount of warm methanol inside the snow surface of the envelope-plus-disk model. The intensities drop by more than an order of magnitude for models including high mm opacity dust grains and disk radii of at least 50 au (for L=8 L$_{\odot}$) due to continuum over-subtraction. The line intensities from the envelope-only models overproduce the observations of protostars with lower methanol emission even with large dust optical depth effects. The envelope-plus-disk models can explain the bulk of the observations. However, they can only reproduce the observations of sources with high luminosities and low methanol emission when dust optical depth effects especially continuum over-subtraction in the disk becomes effective. Therefore, both the effects of disk and dust optical depth should be considered to explain the observations. Abstract: We present a charge distribution based model that computes the infrared spectrum of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules using recent measurements or quantum chemical calculations of specific PAHs. The model is applied to a sample of well-studied photodissociation regions (PDRs) with well-determined physical conditions (the radiation field strength, $G_{0}$, electron density $n_{e}$, and the gas temperature, $T_{\rm gas}$). Specifically, we modelled the emission of five PAHs ranging in size from 18 to 96 carbon atoms, over a range of physical conditions characterized by the ionization parameter $\gamma = G_{0}\times T_{\rm gas}^{1/2}/n_{e}$. The anions emerge as the dominant charge carriers in low $\gamma $ ($< 2\times 10^{2}$) environments, neutrals in the intermediate $\gamma$ ($10^{3} - 10^{4}$) environments, and cations in the high $\gamma$ ($ > 10^{5}$) environments. Furthermore, the PAH anions and cations exhibit similar spectral characteristics. The similarity in the cationic and anionic spectra translates into the interpretation of the 6.2/(11.0+11.2) band ratio, with high values of this ratio associated with large contributions from either cations or anions. The model's predicted values of 6.2/(11.0+11.2) and 3.3/6.2 compared well to the observations in the PDRs NGC 7023, NGC 2023, the horsehead nebula, the Orion bar, and the diffuse ISM, demonstrating that changes in the charge state can account for the variations in the observed PAH emission. We also reassess the diagnostic potential of the 6.2/(11.0+11.2) vs 3.3/(11.0+11.2) ratios and show that without any prior knowledge about $\gamma$, the 3.3/(11.0+11.2) can predict the PAH size, but the 6.2/(11.0+11.2) cannot predict the $\gamma$ of the astrophysical environment., Comment: 27 pages, 24 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: International audience; Aims: Revealing the 3D dynamics of H II region bubbles and their associated molecular clouds and H I envelopes is important for developing an understanding of the longstanding problem as to how stellar feedback affects the density structure and kinematics of the different phases of the interstellar medium. Methods: We employed observations of the H II region RCW 120 in the [C II] 158 μm line, observed within the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) legacy program FEEDBACK, and in the 12CO and 13CO (3 →2) lines, obtained with the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) to derive the physical properties of the gas in the photodissociation region (PDR) and in the molecular cloud. We used high angular resolution H I data from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey to quantify the physical properties of the cold atomic gas through H I self-absorption. The high spectral resolution of the heterodyne observations turns out to be essential in order to analyze the physical conditions, geometry, and overall structure of the sources. Two types of radiative transfer models were used to fit the observed [C II] and CO spectra. A line profile analysis with the 1D non-LTE radiative transfer code SimLine proves that the CO emission cannot stem from a spherically symmetric molecular cloud configuration. With a two-layer multicomponent model, we then quantified the amount of warm background and cold foreground gas. To fully exploit the spectral-spatial information in the CO spectra, a Gaussian mixture model was introduced that allows for grouping spectra into clusters with similar properties. Results: The CO emission arises mostly from a limb-brightened, warm molecular ring, or more specifically a torus when extrapolated in 3D. There is a deficit of CO emission along the line-of-sight toward the center of the H II region which indicates that the H II region is associated with a flattened molecular cloud. Self-absorption in the CO line may hide signatures of infalling and expanding molecular gas. The [C II] emission arises from an expanding [C II] bubble and from the PDRs in the ring/torus. A significant part of [C II] emission is absorbed in a cool (~60-100 K), low-density (−3) atomic foreground layer with a thickness of a few parsec. Conclusions: We propose that the RCW 120 H II region formed in a flattened, filamentary, or sheet-like, molecular cloud and is now bursting out of its parental cloud. The compressed surrounding molecular layer formed a torus around the spherically expanding H II bubble. This scenario can possibly be generalized for other H II bubbles and would explain the observed "flat" structure of molecular clouds associated with H II bubbles. We suggest that the [C II] absorption observed in many star-forming regions is at least partly caused by low-density, cool, H I -envelopes surrounding the molecular clouds. Abstract: We have described the method of investigation of the diffuse interstellar band (DIB) at 6202 ˚ A. This DIB is seen in the spectra of cepheid stars, and it is blended with two stellar lines of Ce II (6201.773 ˚ A) and Ni I (6204.6 ˚ A). After removal of the blending lines of ionized cerium and neutral nickel, we can determine the equivalent widths (EW) of the DIB. This procedure can be applied for the sample of cepheids (with well known distances), which enables one to construct the map of the organic matter distribution in the Galactic disc and use these values to investigate the E(B–V)–DIB EW relation. The relation found from Cepheids matches that found in B stars. This relation can help to find the reddening for newly discovered Cepheids without extensive photo- metric data, and thus determine their distances. The relation between E(B–V) and the DIB EW does not yield precise reddening values. It is not a substitute for better photometric or spectroscopic methods. At best, it is indicative, but it provides some information that may not be otherwise available.

Abstract: The structures, binding energies, and molecular parameters of CnF clusters (n = 1-7) have been investigated theoretically on neutral and ionic forms with the RCCSD(T)//B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. It can be concluded that for the ground states the linear structures are stable only for CF, C6F, and C7F. Other neutral species of CnF(n = 2-5) are slightly bent. The variation in stability with growth of the carbon chain is flat but the ionization potential and electron affinity exhibit clear variations with the size of the clusters. Cation clusters with an even n value have triplet ground states whereas singlet ground states exist when n is odd. All anions except CF-, have singlet ground states. The alternation in stability is found in both cationic and anionic forms, but the trends are reversed. Predictions of several molecular properties may be useful in the identification of these species in the laboratory and in space. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

16. Reactions of Cn (n=1–3) with ions stored in a temperature-variable radio-frequency trap

Abstract: Abstract: A new experimental set-up has been developed for studying astrochemically relevant collisions between small neutral carbon molecules Cn (n=1–3) and stored ions. The ions are confined for seconds in a ring electrode trap (RET) the temperature of which can be varied over a wide range (presently 80–600K). There they interact with an effusive carbon beam, which is produced via high-temperature vaporization of a carbon rod. Due to the accessible temperature range and other features of the set-up, rate coefficients can be measured, which are of importance for understanding the chemistry occurring in the outflow of stars, the formation of hydrocarbons in stellar atmospheres, and the interaction of the stored product ions with radiation. Results are reported for the interaction of stored D3+ with hot Cn. The D+ transfer dominates over all other exothermic product channels for n=1–3. The reaction rate coefficients measured for forming CnD+ are almost a factor two smaller than values presently used in astrophysical models. Another important class of reactions concerns the growth of pure carbon chains via associative Cm++Cn collisions. First results indicate that the rate coefficients are slower than generally assumed in models. Due to the weak signal, only rough limits can be reported. For future studies, the number density of carbon penetrating the trap must be increased. This and the planned extension of the temperature range is briefly discussed in the outlook. Abstract: Context. Low-mass protostars drive powerful molecular outflows that can be observed with millimetre and submillimetre telescopes. Various sulfuretted species are known to be bright in shocks and could be used to infer the physical and chemical conditions throughout the observed outflows. Aims. The evolution of sulfur chemistry is studied along the outflows driven by the NGC 1333-IRAS4A protobinary system located in the Perseus cloud to constrain the physical and chemical processes at work in shocks. Methods. We observed various transitions from OCS, CS, SO, and SO2 towards NGC 1333-IRAS4A in the 1.3, 2, and 3 mm bands using the IRAM NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array and we interpreted the observations through the use of the Paris-Durham shock model. Results. The targeted species clearly show different spatial emission along the two outflows driven by IRAS4A. OCS is brighter on small and large scales along the south outflow driven by IRAS4A1, whereas SO2 is detected rather along the outflow driven by IRAS4A2 that is extended along the north east-south west direction. SO is detected at extremely high radial velocity up to + 25 km s-1 relative to the source velocity, clearly allowing us to distinguish the two outflows on small scales. Column density ratio maps estimated from a rotational diagram analysis allowed us to confirm a clear gradient of the OCS/SO2 column density ratio between the IRAS4A1 and IRAS4A2 outflows. Analysis assuming non Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium of four SO2 transitions towards several SiO emission peaks suggests that the observed gas should be associated with densities higher than 105 cm-3 and relatively warm (T > 100 K) temperatures in most cases. Conclusions. The observed chemical differentiation between the two outflows of the IRAS4A system could be explained by a different chemical history. The outflow driven by IRAS4A1 is likely younger and more enriched in species initially formed in interstellar ices, such as OCS, and recently sputtered into the shock gas. In contrast, the longer and likely older outflow triggered by IRAS4A2 is more enriched in species that have a gas phase origin, such as SO2., With funding from the Spanish government through the "María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence" accreditation (MDM-2017-0737)

Abstract: Context. Nitriles constitute almost 20% of the molecules observed in the interstellar medium, whereas only one dinitrile and one isocyanonitrile compound have been detected up to now. The lack of detections of such compounds may be partially explained by the lack of accurate spectroscopic data on their rotational spectra.Aims. Two small seven-atom dinitriles, malononitrile NCCH2CN and isocyanoacetonitrile NCCH2NC, were chosen as target species for this study. For malononitrile the goal of the study is to systematize all the previous measurements, and to extend the measurements to the sub-millimeter wavelength range. The spectrum of isocyanoacetonitrile has not been studied before.Methods. The rotational spectra of the two molecules were measured in the frequency range 150–660 GHz using the Lille fast-scan spectrometer. The spectroscopic study was supported by high-level theoretical calculations on the structure of these molecules and their harmonic force field.Results. Accurate frequency predictions for malononitrile and isocyanoacetonitrile were calculated on the basis of the analysis of their rotational spectra. The influence of the spin statistics on the intensities of the lines of malononitrile was taken into account. The provided line lists and sets of molecular parameters meet the needs of astrophysical searches for the two molecules.

Abstract: Context. Ketene was detected in the interstellar medium (ISM) in 1977. Until now, only one derivative, the ketenyl radical, has been observed in this medium. Due to its large dipole moment value, cynaoketene is one of the best candidates for possible ketene derivative detection. Aims. To date, the measurements of the rotational spectra have been limited to 60 GHz. The extrapolation of the prediction in the millimeter wave domain is inaccurate and does not permit an unambiguous detection. Methods. The rotational spectra were re-investigated up to 330 GHz. Using the new prediction cyanoketene was sought after in a variety of astronomical sources: NGS 63341, SgrB2(N), and ASAI sources. Results. A total of 1594 transitions were newly assigned and fitted together with those from previous studies, reaching quantum numbers up to J = 82 and Ka = 24. Watson’s asymmetric top Hamiltonian in the Ir representation was used for the analysis; both reductions A and S were tested. Logically, the S reduction gave the best results confirming that the molecule is very close to the prolate limit. Cynaoketene was not found in ISM; upper limits to the column density were derived in each source.

Abstract: Context. Detection of deuterated species may provide information on the evolving chemistry in the earliest phases of star-forming regions. For molecules with two isomeric forms of the same isotopic variant, gas-phase and solid-state formation pathways can be differentiated using their abundance ratio. Aims. Spectroscopic databases for astrophysical purposes are built for the two mono deuterated isomeric species CH2DCOH and CH3COD of the complex organic molecule acetaldehyde. These databases can be used to search and detect these two species in astrophysical surveys, retrieving their column density and therefore abundances. Methods. Submillimeter wave and terahertz transitions were measured for mono deuterated acetaldehyde CH2DCOH which is a non-rigid species displaying internal rotation of its asymmetrical CH2D methyl group. An analysis of a dataset consisting of previously measured microwave data and the newly measured transition was carried out with a model accounting for the large amplitude torsion. Results. The frequencies of 2556 transitions are reproduced with a unitless standard deviation of 2.3 yielding various spectroscopic constants. Spectroscopic databases for astrophysical purposes were built for CH2DCOH using the results of the present analysis and for CH3COD using the results of a previous spectroscopic investigation. These two species were both searched for and are detected toward a low-mass star-forming region. Conclusions. We report the first detection of CH2DCOH (93 transitions) and the detection of CH3COD (43 transitions) species in source B of the IRAS 16293−2422 young stellar binary system located in the ρ Ophiuchus cloud region, using the publicly available ALMA Protostellar Interferometric Line Survey.

Abstract: Context. Beyond NH3, only one primary alkylamine, CH3NH2, has been identified in the interstellar medium and the reason why is still not understood: its formation could occur in the gas phase or in icy environments. Aims. To consider any possible difference between the formation of primary and secondary amines, we studied the hydrogenation processes of CH3CN and CH3NC, which would lead to the simple primary CH3CH2NH2 and secondary CH3NHCH3 amines, respectively. Methods. Experimentally, the hydrogenation of CH3CN and CH3NC was carried out under ultra-high vacuum, using two beamlines to inject the nitrile/isonitrile and H onto substrate surfaces of gold or water ice. The reactions were monitored using infrared spectroscopy and the products were followed by mass spectrometry. Theoretically, the energetics of the hydrogenation paths were determined using the M06-2X functional after benchmarking against post Hartree–Fock procedures. Meanwhile, a survey of the high-mass star forming region W51/e2 has been performed. Results. Following co-deposition of CH3CN and H, we show that these species do not react together between 10 and 60 K. For CH3NC we found that the hydrogenation process works all the way through the CH3NHCH3 end product; we also identified the CH3NCH2 intermediate together with side products, CH4 and HCN, showing that the isonitrile backbone is breaking. These results are consistent with the calculations of a high barrier on the first hydrogenation step for CH3CN and a lower barrier for CH3NC. Conclusions. The formation of CH3CH2NH2 by hydrogenation of CH3CN appears rather unlikely in both the gas phase and ice environment whereas that of CH3NHCH3 is a clear possibility. The limiting factor appears to be the efficiency of the tunneling effect through the first activation barrier on the reaction paths. More surveys are required for further insight into the search for amines.

Abstract: International audience; We present a laboratory rotational study of, and astronomical search for, lactaldehyde (CH3CH(OH)CH(O)), one of the simplest chiral molecules that could reasonably be seen in the interstellar medium (ISM), in the millimeter and submillimeter wave regions from 80 to 460 GHz. More than 5000 transitions were assigned to the most stable conformer, and a set of spectroscopic constants was accurately determined. Lactaldehyde is involved in numerous metabolic pathways used by life on Earth, and is a logical step up in complexity from glycolaldehyde (CH(O)CH2OH) which is being detected with increasing regularity in the ISM. We present an accompanying radio astronomical search for lactaldehyde in three high-mass star-forming regions (NGC 6334I, Sgr B2(N), and Orion-KL) as well as in the publicly available data from the ASAI Large Project. Neither molecule is detected in these sources, and we report corresponding upper limits to the column densities. We discuss the potential utility of lactaldehyde in combination with other members of the [C-3,H-6,O-2] isomeric family in probing pathways of chemical evolution in the ISM.

Abstract: We report new interferometric images of cyclopropenylidene, c-C$_3$H$_2$, towards the young protocluster OMC-2 FIR\,4. The observations were performed at 82 and 85 GHz with the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) as part of the project Seeds Of Life In Space (SOLIS). In addition, IRAM-30m data observations were used to investigate the physical structure of OMC-2 FIR\,4. We find that the c-C$_3$H$_2$ gas emits from the same region where previous SOLIS observations showed bright HC$_5$N emission. From a non-LTE analysis of the IRAM-30m data, the c-C$_3$H$_2$ gas has an average temperature of $\sim$40K, a H$_2$ density of $\sim$3$\times$10$^{5}$~cm$^{-3}$, and a c-C$_3$H$_2$ abundance relative to H$_2$ of ($7\pm1$)$\times$10$^{-12}$. In addition, the NOEMA observations provide no sign of significant c-C$_3$H$_2$ excitation temperature gradients across the region (about 3-4 beams), with T$_{ex}$ in the range 8$\pm$3 up to 16$\pm$7K. We thus infer that our observations are inconsistent with a physical interaction of the OMC-2 FIR\,4 envelope with the outflow arising from OMC-2 FIR\,3, as claimed by previous studies. The comparison of the measured c-C$_3$H$_2$ abundance with the predictions from an astrochemical PDR model indicates that OMC-2 FIR\,4 is irradiated by a FUV field $\sim$1000 times larger than the interstellar one, and by a flux of ionising particles $\sim$4000 times larger than the canonical value of $1\times10^{-17}$~s$^{-1}$ from the Galaxy cosmic rays, which is consistent with our previous HC$_5$N observations. This provides an important and independent confirmation of other studies that one or more sources inside the OMC-2 FIR\,4 region emit energetic ($\geq10$~MeV) particles., Accepted for publication in ApJ - 14 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: International audience; Glycinamide, a glycine precursor, has been successfully generated in the gas phase by laser ablation of its hydrochloride salt, and its microwave spectrum, recorded from 6 to 16 GHz using a Chirped Pulse Fourier Transform Microwave (LA-CP-FTMW) spectrometer, is reported for the first time. The existence of a single structure stabilized by a N-a-H center dot center dot center dot NtH2 hydrogen bond has been revealed in the supersonic expansion. The complex nuclear quadrupole coupling hyperfine structure due to the two N-14 nuclei has been completely resolved and analyzed using a Molecular Beam Fourier Transform Microwave spectrometer in combination with laser ablation (LA-MB-FTMW spectrometer). The first precise data obtained on this glycine precursor could be of great importance for possible future identifications in the interstellar medium.

Abstract: Context. About 40 cyanide compounds have been detected in the interstellar medium, but only 3 examples of organic isocyanide compounds were observed in this medium. Ethyl isocyanide is one of the best candidates for possible detection. Aim. To date, measurements of rotational spectra are limited to 40 GHz. The extrapolation of the prediction in the millimeter wave domain is inaccurate and does not permit an unambiguous detection. Methods. The rotational spectra were reinvestigated from 0.15 to 1 THz. Using the new prediction, we searched for the compound ethyl isocyanide in Orion KL and Sgr B2. Results. We newly assigned 2906 transitions and fitted these new data with those from previous studies, reaching quantum numbers up to J = 103 and Ka = 30. The asymmetric top Hamiltonian proposed by Watson in the Ir representation was used for the analysis, and both reductions A and S were tested. The search for CH3CH2NC in Sgr B2 (IRAM 30m) and Orion KL (IRAM 30m, ALMA Science Verification) result in a non-detection; upper limits to the column density were derived.

Abstract: Towards the pre-stellar core L1544, the methanol (CH$_3$OH) emission forms an asymmetric ring around the core centre, where CH$_3$OH is mostly in solid form, with a clear peak 4000~au to the north-east of the dust continuum peak. As part of the NOEMA Large Project SOLIS (Seeds of Life in Space), the CH$_3$OH peak has been spatially resolved to study its kinematics and physical structure and to investigate the cause behind the local enhancement. We find that methanol emission is distributed in a ridge parallel to the main axis of the dense core. The centroid velocity increases by about 0.2~km~s$^{-1}$ and the velocity dispersion increases from subsonic to transonic towards the central zone of the core, where the velocity field also shows complex structure. This could be indication of gentle accretion of material onto the core or interaction of two filaments, producing a slow shock. We measure the rotational temperature and show that methanol is in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) only close to the dust peak, where it is significantly depleted. The CH$_3$OH column density, $N_{tot}({\rm CH_3OH})$, profile has been derived with non-LTE radiative transfer modelling and compared with chemical models of a static core. The measured $N_{tot}({\rm CH_3OH})$ profile is consistent with model predictions, but the total column densities are one order of magnitude lower than those predicted by models, suggesting that the efficiency of reactive desorption or atomic hydrogen tunnelling adopted in the model may be overestimated; or that an evolutionary model is needed to better reproduce methanol abundance., 19 pages, 18 figures. Abstract: Abstract: HO, CO and CO ices are condensed on carbonaceous and silicate dust grains in dense interstellar clouds and circumstellar environments. The presence of these ices is inferred by analysing their infrared (IR) spectra. The upcoming Herschel space observatory (HERSCHEL) and ground-based astronomy project (ALMA) will provide new spectral data in the unexplored far infrared (FIR) and sub-millimetre range. In our laboratory we are developing instrumentation to study ices at IR region. One of the key components of our laboratory is a silicon composite bolometer in our IFS. This detector allows us to obtain spectra with a sensitivity much greater than that obtained with a standard deuterated triglycine sulphate (DTGS) detector working at room temperature and under vacuum conditions. We plan to collect mid infrared (MIR) and FIR spectra of simple ices and their mixtures and compare these with observational data. It is also planned to do a systematic laboratory study of the effects that ultraviolet (UV) photolysis and thermal annealing have on the ice band profiles and their structure. Abstract: This thesis focuses on high-mass star formation by using infrared and sub-millimeter data mainly from the Spitzer Space Telescope and Mopra Telescope MALT90 Survey data archives. The first part is a photometric study of massive star-forming regions W49, W51, W43 in the Galaxy to investigate the census of Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) membership by using color-color and color-magnitude relations. YSO catalogs with thousands of sources are generated for these regions. The second part is a spectroscopic investigation of high-mass clumps. MALT90 Survey data was used to investigate different stages of star formation. Physical and chemical properties of these clumps were determined. The spatial distribution of lines, their profiles, and column densities indicate that these sources are at very early stages of star formation. There are several interesting sources among them need further investigation with high sensitivity and high spatial resolution.

Abstract: The interstellar delivery of carbon atoms locked into molecules might be one of the key ingredients for the emergence of life. Cyanopolyynes are carbon chains delimited at their two extremities by an atom of hydrogen and a cyano group, meaning that they could be excellent reservoirs of carbon. The simplest member, HC3N, is ubiquitous in the galactic interstellar medium and found also in external galaxies. Thus, understanding the growth of cyanopolyynes in regions forming stars similar to our Sun, and what affects them, is particularly relevant. In the framework of the IRAM/NOEMA Large Program SOLIS (Seeds Of Life In Space), we have obtained a map of two cyanopolyynes, HC3N and HC5N, in the protocluster OMC-2 FIR4. Because our Sun is thought to be born in a rich cluster, OMC-2 FIR4 is one of the closest and best known representatives of the environment in which the Sun may have been born. We find a HC3N/HC5N abundance ratio across the source in the range 1..30, with the smallest values (≤10) in FIR5 and in the eastern region of FIR4. The ratios ≤10 can be reproduced by chemical models only if: (1) the cosmic-ray ionisation rate is ∼4× 10-14 s-1; (2) the gaseous elemental ratio C/O is close to unity; and (3) oxygen and carbon are largely depleted. The large is comparable to that measured in FIR4 by previous works and was interpreted as due to a flux of energetic (≥10 MeV) particles from embedded sources. We suggest that these sources could lie east of FIR4 and FIR5. A temperature gradient across FIR4, with T decreasing from east to west by about 10 K, could also explain the observed change in the HC3N/HC5N line ratio, without the need of a cosmic ray ionisation rate gradient. However, even in this case, a high constant cosmic-ray ionisation rate (of the order of 10s s-1) is necessary to reproduce the observations. © ESO 2017. Abstract: Complex organic molecules have been observed for decades in the interstellar medium. Some of them might be considered as small bricks of the macromolecules at the base of terrestrial life. It is hence particularly important to understand organic chemistry in Solar-like star forming regions. In this article, we present a new observational project: SOLIS (Seeds Of Life In Space). This is a Large Project at the IRAM-NOEMA interferometer, and its scope is to image the emission of several crucial organic molecules in a sample of Solar-like star forming regions in different evolutionary stage and environments. Here, we report the first SOLIS results, obtained from analysing the spectra of different regions of the Class 0 source NGC1333-IRAS4A, the protocluster OMC-2 FIR4, and the shock site L1157-B1. The different regions were identified based on the images of formamide (NH2CHO) and cyanodiacetylene (HC5N) lines. We discuss the observed large diversity in the molecular and organic content, both on large (3000-10000 au) and relatively small (300-1000 au) scales. Finally, we derive upper limits to the methoxy fractional abundance in the three observed regions of the same order of magnitude of that measured in few cold prestellar objects, namely ~10^-12-10^-11 with respect to H2 molecules., Comment: Accepted for publication on The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract: CONTEXT: Hydrides are simple compounds containing one or a few hydrogen atoms bonded to a heavier atom. They are fundamental precursor molecules in cosmic chemistry and many hydride ions have become observable in high quality for the first time thanks to the Herschel Space Observatory. Ionized hydrides such as CH⁺ and OH⁺ (and also HCO⁺), which affect the chemistry of molecules such as water, provide complementary information on irradiation by far-UV (FUV) or X-rays and gas temperature. AIMS: We explore hydrides of the most abundant heavier elements in an observational survey covering young stellar objects (YSOs) with different mass and evolutionary state. The focus is on hydrides associated with the dense protostellar envelope and outflows, contrary to previous work that focused on hydrides in diffuse foreground clouds. METHODS: Twelve YSOs were observed with HIFI on Herschel in six spectral settings providing fully velocity-resolved line profiles as part of the Water in star-forming regions with Herschel (WISH) program. The YSOs include objects of low (Class 0 and I), intermediate, and high mass, with luminosities ranging from 4 L⊙ to 2 × 105 L⊙. RESULTS: The targeted lines of CH⁺, OH⁺, H₂O⁺+, C⁺, and CH are detected mostly in blue-shifted absorption. H₃O⁺ and SH⁺ are detected in emission and only toward some high-mass objects. The observed line parameters and correlations suggest two different origins related to gas entrained by the outflows and to the circumstellar envelope. The derived column densities correlate with bolometric luminosity and envelope mass for all molecules, best for CH, CH⁺, and HCO⁺. The column density ratios of CH⁺/OH⁺ are estimated from chemical slab models, assuming that the H₂ density is given by the specific density model of each object at the beam radius. For the low-mass YSOs the observed ratio can be reproduced for an FUV flux of 2–400 times the interstellar radiation field (ISRF) at the location of the molecules. In two high-mass objects, the UV flux is 20–200 times the ISRF derived from absorption lines, and 300–600 ISRF using emission lines. Upper limits for the X-ray luminosity can be derived from H₃O⁺ observations for some low-mass objects. CONCLUSIONS: If the FUV flux required for low-mass objects originates at the central protostar, a substantial FUV luminosity, up to 1.5 L⊙, is required. There is no molecular evidence for X-ray induced chemistry in the low-mass objects on the observed scales of a few 1000 AU. For high-mass regions, the FUV flux required to produce the observed molecular ratios is smaller than the unattenuated flux expected from the central object(s) at the Herschel beam radius. This is consistent with an FUV flux reduced by circumstellar extinction or by bloating of the protostar.

32. Gas phase absorption of spectroscopy of C60⁺₆₀ and C⁺₇₀ in a cryogenic ion trap: comparison with astronomical measurements

Abstract: Recent low-temperature laboratory measurements and astronomical observations have proved that the fullerene cation C⁺₆₀ is responsible for four diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs). These absorptions correspond to the strongest bands of the lowest electronic transition. The gas phase spectrum below 10K is reported here for the full wavelength range encompassed by the electronic transition. The absorption spectrum of C⁺₇₀ with its origin band at 7959.2Å has been obtained under similar laboratory conditions. Observations made toward the reddened star HD 183143 were used in a specific search for the absorption of these fullerene cations in diffuse clouds. In the case of C⁺₆₀, one further band in the astronomical spectrum at $9348.5 Å is identified, increasing the total number of assigned DIBs to five. Numerous other C⁺₆₀ absorptions in the laboratory spectrum are found to lie below the astronomical detection limit. Special emphasis is placed on the laboratory determination of absolute absorption cross-sections. For C⁺₆₀ this directly yields a column density, N(C⁺₆₀)of 2× 10¹³cm⁻² in diffuse clouds, without the need to rely on theoretical oscillator strengths. The intensity of the C⁺₇₀ electronic transition in the range 7000–8000 Å is spread over many features of similar strength. Absorption cross-section measurements indicate that even for a similar column density, the individual absorption bands of C⁺₇₀ will be too weak to be detected in the astronomical spectra, which is confirmed giving an upper limit of 2mÅ to the equivalent width.

Abstract: The CH3OH 4_2–5_1 E transition was observed toward the Sgr B2 region, including the Principal Cloud and its surroundings. This methanol transition shows an extended emission along the 2’N cloud, which is believed to be colliding with the Principal Cloud and may trigger the massive star formation in this cloud. This extended methanol emission may also suggest that the 2’N cloud is under shocks. We derive total methanol column density N(CH3OH) = 2.9 ±0.3 × 10^14 cm–2 toward the peak position of the extended emission. The fractional abundance of methanol is about 10–9, relative to the estimated total H2 abundance, which is similar to the methanol abundances in quiet gas phase.

Abstract: We present the results of Herschel HOBYS photometric mapping combined with BIMA observations and additional archival data, and perform an in-depth study of the evolutionary phases of the star-forming clumps in W 48A and their surroundings. Age estimates for the compact sources were derived from bolometric luminosities and envelope masses, which were obtained from the dust continuum emission, and agree within an order of magnitude with age estimates from molecular line and radio data. The clumps in W 48A are linearly aligned by age (east-old to west-young): we find a ultra compact (UC) HII region, a young stellar object (YSO) with class II methanol maser emission, a YSO with a massive outflow, and finally the NH_2D prestellar cores from Pillai et al. This remarkable positioning reflects the (star) formation history of the region. We find that it is unlikely that the star formation in the W 48A molecular cloud was triggered by the UCHII region and discuss the Aquila supershell expansion as a mayor influence on the evolution of W 48A. We conclude that the combination of Herschel continuum data with interferometric molecular line and radio continuum data is important to derive trustworthy age estimates and interpret the origin of large scale structures through kinematic information., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 22 pages, 21 figures, 5 tables

Abstract: We analyse the SLEDs of 13CO and C18O for the J=1-0 up to J=7-6 transitions in the gravitationally lensed ultraluminous infrared galaxy SMMJ2135-0102 at z=2.3. This is the first detection of 13CO and C18O in a high-redshift star-forming galaxy. These data comprise observations of six transitions taken with PdBI and we combine these with 33GHz JVLA data and our previous 12CO and continuum emission information to better constrain the properties of the ISM within this system. We study both the velocity-integrated and kinematically decomposed properties of the galaxy and coupled with an LVG model we find that the star-forming regions in the system vary in their cold gas properties. We find strong C18O emission both in the velocity-integrated emission and in the two kinematic components at the periphery of the system, where the C18O line flux is equivalent to or higher than the 13CO. We derive an average velocity-integrated flux ratio of 13CO/C18O~1 suggesting a [13CO]/[C18O] abundance ratio at least 7x lower than that in the Milky Way. This may suggest enhanced C18O abundance, perhaps indicating star formation preferentially biased to high-mass stars. We estimate the relative contribution to the ISM heating from cosmic rays and UV of (30-3300)x10^(-25)erg/s and 45x10^(-25)erg/s per H2 molecule respectively and both are comparable to the total cooling rate of (0.8-20)x10^(-25)erg/s from the CO. However, our LVG models indicate high (>100K) temperatures and densities (>10^(3))cm^(-3) in the ISM which may suggest that cosmic rays play a more important role than UV heating in this system. If cosmic rays dominate the heating of the ISM, the increased temperature in the star forming regions may favour the formation of massive stars and so explain the enhanced C18O abundance. Abstract: Context. Cosmic ray ion irradiation affects the chemical composition of and triggers physical changes in interstellar ice mantles in space. One of the primary structural changes induced is the loss of porosity, and the mantles evolve toward a more compact amorphous state. Previously, ice compaction was monitored at low to moderate ion energies. The existence of a compaction threshold in stopping power has been suggested. Aims. In this article we experimentally study the effect of heavy ion irradiation at energies closer to true cosmic rays. This minimises extrapolation and allows a regime where electronic interaction always dominates to be explored, providing the ice compaction cross section over a wide range of electronic stopping power. Methods. High-energy ion irradiations provided by the GANIL accelerator, from the MeV up to the GeV range, are combined with in-situ infrared spectroscopy monitoring of ice mantles. We follow the IR spectral evolution of the ice as a function of increasing fluence (induced compaction of the initial microporous amorphous ice into a more compact amorphous phase). We use the number of OH dangling bonds of the water molecule, i.e. pending OH bonds not engaged in a hydrogen bond in the initially porous ice structure as a probe of the phase transition. These high-energy experiments are combined with lower energy experiments using light ions (H, He) from other facilities in Catania, Italy, and Washington, USA. Results. We evaluated the cross section for the disappearance of OH dangling bonds as a function of electronic stopping power. A cross-section law in a large energy range that includes data from different ice deposition setups is established. The relevant phase structuring time scale for the ice network is compared to interstellar chemical time scales using an astrophysical model. Conclusions. 38. Highly Sensitive Ammonia Probes of a Variable Proton-to-Electron Mass Ratio.

Abstract: The mass sensitivity of the vibration-rotation-inversion energy levels of ammonia is probed using the nonrigid inverter theory. It is shown that the sensitivity exhibits non-negligible centrifugal distortion dependence, which is currently disregarded. The centrifugal distortion effects are especially important in the case of the Δk = ±3 "forbidden" transitions involving accidentally coinciding ro-inversional states |a,J,K = 3⟩ and |s,J,K = 0⟩ of the ν2 vibrational state of (14)NH3. The energy differences of these states exhibit very anomalous mass sensitivities (see Jansen etal. J. Chem. Phys. 2014 , 140 , 010901 ), thus appearing as new highly sensitive probes of the cosmological variability of the proton-to-electron mass ratio.
