Overwintering in shallow habitats presents a serious obstacle for aquatic invertebrates. Here we investigated the little-known ability of water boatmen (Hemiptera: Corixidae), an aquatic insect, to survive the winter encased in air pockets within the ice of shallow wetlands. We extracted and experimentally thawed large blocks of ice from prairie wetlands in Saskatchewan, Canada, from which we examined the species composition and revival of corixids. While multiple corixid species were present in wetlands prior to freeze-up, a single species, Cymatia americana Hussey, 1920, comprised the vast majority of corixids that were found within the ice later in winter. Only 4%–9% of corixids, all Cymatia americana, revived after ice thawing over both study years. Being encased within an air pocket appeared to be necessary for the survival of corixids in the ice, with up to 300 individuals grouped together. Other invertebrate taxa also revived after thawing, including Haliplidae and Dytiscidae (Coleoptera) encased within air pockets both alongside corixids and on their own, as well as Coenagrionidae (Odonata), Phryganeidae and Leptoceridae (Trichoptera), Chironomidae (Diptera), and Physidae and Planorbidae (Basommatophora), which appeared to be encased in solid ice. The ability to overwinter inside ice represents a little understood survival mechanism of aquatic invertebrates in shallow wetlands, which could confer energetic and reproductive advantages to those that endure until spring.

Lake food web structure dictates the flow of energy and contaminants to top predators, and addition of invasive species can shift these flows. We examined trophic position (TP), proportional reliance on the littoral zone (Proplittoral), and mercury (Hg) concentrations across the life-span of two predatory fishes, walleye (Sander vitreus) and northern pike (Esox lucius), in lakes with and without invasive virile crayfish (Faxonius virilis). The littoral zone was the dominant foraging zone for both species regardless of size, accounting for 59% and 80% of the diet of walleye and pike, respectively. Both species increased in TP and Hg with body size, as did crayfish. Walleye in crayfish-present lakes had lower Proplittoral, TP, and Hg concentrations compared with non-present lakes, but trophic magnification of Hg through the food web was consistent across all six lakes. These findings underscore a strong role for the littoral zone in channeling energy and contaminants to higher trophic levels and how invasive species can occupy new habitats at low abundance while altering food web structure and contaminant bioaccumulation.

Gibson’s Big Sand tiger beetle, Cicindela formosa gibsoni Brown, occurs primarily in the Saskatchewan sand hills and was recently listed as threatened in Canada due to habitat loss caused by dune stabilization. Herein, we report on a 3-year population study initiated in 2016 to better understand the distribution, abundance, and ecology of C. f. gibsoni in the Elbow Sand Hills, a large active dune complex in southern Saskatchewan. Estimated adult population size for the dune complex varied from a low of 1106 (95% confidence interval (CI) 975–1237) to a high of 1474 (CI 1350–1598), possibly due to inter-annual variation in May–June rainfall. Adult abundance varied substantially between interdunal swales (0–137 individuals), with the highest numbers occurring in sparsely-vegetated habitats on the stoss side of the dune complex where the rate of encroachment by vegetation is highest. Approximately a third of the total population is concentrated within a relatively small area (~ 6 ha) in the northwestern region of the dune complex, although the specific cause for this localized distribution is not clear. Our findings suggest that the distribution of C. f. gibsoni within the dune complex is not limited by prey availability or larval habitat quality but is instead related to the amount of sparsely-vegetated habitat. We hypothesize that sparsely-vegetated areas allow beetles to shuttle between exposed and shaded microhabitats, thereby assisting in thermoregulation and maintenance of high body temperatures that are optimal for foraging.

Threats to wetland water quality and aquatic insect secondary production in agricultural landscapes are multifaceted and are known to vary spatially and temporally. We designed this study with the aim to disentangle the effects of multiple stressors on emerging aquatic insects from wetlands impacted by intensive agricultural practices and receiving runoff from neonicotinoid-treated canola. A total of 22 semi-permanent wetlands were monitored over two growing seasons (11 different wetlands per year) in central Saskatchewan, Canada. Over the two sampling years, dipterans from the families Chironomidae (60-67%), Muscidae (13-15%) and Ceratopogonidae (7-13%) made up the majority of emergent taxa, representing 80-95% of the total emergence. Multivariate ordination analyses of eight water quality and nine wetland habitat variables revealed that neonicotinoid concentration, turbidity, vegetation disturbance, and continuity of a vegetative grass buffer zone were significant factors influencing the aquatic insect taxa composition. Generalized linear mixed effects models indicated that total insect emergence over time was significantly predicted by neonicotinoid concentrations (imidacloprid toxic equivalency, TEQ) and vegetation disturbance. Higher neonicotinoid concentrations negatively affected insect emergence over time, whereas vegetation disturbance increased total emergence, likely due to the abundance of disturbance-tolerant taxa. Overall, we observed community-level responses driven by multiple indicators of wetland degradation (insecticides, turbidity, and vegetation disturbance). Collectively, these multivariate field data provide an in-depth understanding of how agricultural management practices, including neonicotinoid use, interact to shape wetland aquatic insect communities.

A heat stressor (1 h at 30°C) in Lymnaea stagnalis before operant conditioning training of aerial respiration is sufficient to enhance long-term memory (LTM) formation in ‘average’ cognitive ability, laboratory-reared, inbred snails. However, in freshly collected outbred snails, the same heat stressor blocks LTM formation in ‘smart’ cognitive phenotype but not in average cognitive phenotype strains. Here, we hypothesize that (1) preventing the stress associated with the heat stressor before training allows LTM to form in the smart phenotype strains; and (2) alleviating the stress before a memory recall session allows a formed LTM to be recalled in the smart phenotype strains. We found that an injection of propranolol, which mitigates the stressor, before snails experience the heat stressor enabled two strains of the smart phenotype snails to form LTM, consistent with our first hypothesis. However, the injection of propranolol before a memory test session did not alleviate a memory recall block in the smart phenotype snails. Thus, our second hypothesis was not supported. Therefore, smart cognitive phenotype snails encountering a heat stressor have an inability to form LTM, but this inability can be overcome by the pre-injection of propranolol.

Cobble baskets are frequently used as a tool to measure differences in benthic macroinvertebrate communities between waterbodies; however, underlying differences in substrate type may influence the resultant colonization of baskets, misrepresenting communities. This study tests the hypothesis that cobble basket placement influences the resulting benthic macroinvertebrate community. Cobble basket arrays (n = 4) were deployed in Dog Lake, Saskatchewan, in 2011 (97 d) and 2012 (95 d) on cobble habitats and soft or sandy substrates ∼100 m apart. Baskets placed on cobble substrate had significantly higher Shannon-Weaver diversity relative to those placed on soft substrate in both years, and higher % EPT (Ephemeroptera Plecoptera Trichoptera) in 2011, but total density was not significantly different. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling revealed that the community was different between both treatments, characterized by higher densities of Gammarus lacustris Sars in baskets placed on soft sediment in both years, higher densities of Aeshna sp. and Mystacides sp. on cobble substrate in 2011, and higher densities of Helobdella stagnalis (L.) and Glossophinia complanata (L.) on cobble substrate in 2012. The results were consistent with the hypothesis that baskets placed on cobble substrate versus soft substrate will result in differing community colonization. The resulting recommendation for monitoring and assessment using cobble baskets in lakes is that baskets be placed on comparable substrate type when comparing between lakes, and that cobble beds be chosen as a more appropriate substrate for deployment, as the added habitat complexity of baskets on soft sediment may act as an attractant and not reflect the true community composition of that habitat.

We tested the applicability of the “passive sampling” hypothesis and theory of island biogeography (TIB) for explaining the diversity of forest-dwelling carabid assemblages (Carabidae: Coleoptera) on 30 forested islands (0.2–980.7 ha) in Lac la Ronge and the adjacent mainland in Saskatchewan, Canada. Species richness per unit area increased with distance to mainland with diversity being highest on the most isolated islands. We detected neither a positive species-area relationship, nor significant differences in species richness among island size classes, or between islands and the mainland. Nonetheless, carabid assemblages distinctly differed on islands Carabus taedatus Fabricius. Our findings suggest that neither the “passive sampling” hypothesis nor the theory of island biogeography adequately explain carabid beetle diversity patterns observed among islands in Lac la Ronge. Instead, we hypothesise that population processes such as higher extinction rates of large-bodied, flightless species and the associated release of smaller-bodied, flying species from intra-guild predation on small islands contribute to observed differences in the structure of carabid assemblages between islands.

Stress alters the ability to form, recall and maintain memory according to the Yerkes–Dodson/Hebb (YDH) law. The effects of environmentally relevant stressors, such as low environmental calcium and crowding, on learning and memory have previously been described in a laboratory-reared ‘average’ strain of Lymnaea stagnalis (i.e. the Dutch strain) as well as two strains of freshly collected L. stagnalis with enhanced memory formation abilities (i.e. ‘smart’ snails). Here, we use L. stagnalis to study the effects of other environmentally relevant stressors on memory formation in two other strains of freshly collected snails, one ‘smart’ and one ‘average’. The stressors we examined are thermal, resource restriction combined with food odour, predator detection and, for the first time, tissue injury (shell damage). We show that the same stressor has significantly different effects on memory formation depending on whether snails are ‘smart’ or ‘average’. Specifically, our data suggest that a stressor or a combination of stressors act to enhance memory in ‘average’ snails but obstruct memory formation in ‘smart’ snails. These results are consistent with the YDH law and our hypothesis that ‘smart’ snails are more easily stressed than ‘average’ snails.

As more hydroelectric dams regulate rivers to meet growing energy demands, there is ongoing concern about downstream effects, including impacts on downstream benthic macroinvertebrate (BMI) communities. Hydropeaking is a common hydroelectric practice where short‐term variation in power production leads to large and often rapid fluctuations in discharge and water level. There are key knowledge gaps on the ecosystem impacts of hydropeaking in large rivers, the seasonality of these impacts, and whether dams can be managed to lessen impacts. We collected a single specimen of the giant water bug Belostoma flumineum Say 1832 (Hemiptera: Belostomatidae) during routine macroinvertebrate biomonitoring in the Souris River, Saskatchewan. This is the first record of B. flumineum in the province of Saskatchewan and represents a more northern record than the previously documented locations in Montana, North Dakota, and southeastern Manitoba.

Lake sturgeon are arguably the largest and most unique freshwater fish in North America. Unfortunately their uniqueness includes many characteristics that make them especially vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts including overfishing, habitat fragmentation, and degradation. For approximately 100 years lake sturgeon populations across North America have either been in decline and (or) have experienced a sluggish recovery. While this is partly due to lake sturgeon life history, most researchers agree that habitat fragmentation and degradation are currently the highest risk to the species. Though most lake sturgeon populations are depressed, there are a few exceptions that offer a glimpse into what a stable population or recovery may look like. The following review highlights such instances as well as what is known and more importantly what is not known about this unique species. Specifically, we highlight the need for improved and organized sharing of raw data given the fact that many researchers do not have access to the plethora of information available to others (e.g., otoliths for aging). We examine the varying life history and diet choices of this plastic species offering hypotheses for differences in migration routes and distances as well the differing recovery rates found across their range. We highlight myths about the species providing evidence that they may not be as long lived and fecund as previously thought. We examine the lake sturgeon’s current legal status across North America including the efforts of nonprofit groups that have had success in increasing population numbers. Most importantly, we highlight logistical problems faced by researchers and data gaps in the literature that must be filled to increase the odds of a successful recovery. Alongside the data gaps, the recovery of this species is fraught with political and industrial road blocks that are as varied as its current recovery. Subsequently, as is the case with many species, its survival will come down to solid scientific knowledge and the value placed on it by society.

Large hydroelectric dams directly alter the abiotic condition of rivers by releasing water with large differences in temperature relative to natural conditions. These alterations in the thermal regime along with alterations in flow often result in altered ecosystems downstream. For sustainable management of this aquatic resource, there is a need to balance services a reservoir provides with ecosystem protection. Here we conduct a high-resolution study on the thermal regime and associated aquatic macroinvertebrate community downstream of a hydroelectric dam on a large-order Northern Great Plains River and analyze these findings with a non-central hypothesis test model, Test Site Analysis. Specifically, we monitor the temperature regime of this tailwater environment, and compare the annual change in temperature downstream to reference sites unaffected by the dam. We find that reaches downstream of the dam are significantly cooler than reference through the summer into August and do not reach the temperature optima of reference reaches. Cold-water release, or some other change in flow characteristics, changes abundance, diversity, % Orthocladiinae, and community composition. We used these metrics to compare test sites to reference sites and to quantify the impact of the Lake Diefenbaker reservoir on community metrics characteristic of temperature stress. Our results have implications primarily for understanding and quantifying the ecosystem impacts of hydroelectric energy production, but also range expansion of cold-water tolerant taxa, the life-history of select groups of invertebrates, and ultimately the forage resources available to the fish assemblages of this river system.

Life-history traits influence colonization, persistence, and extinction of species on islands and are important aspects of theories predicting the geographical distribution and evolution of species. We used data collected from a large freshwater lake (1,413 km2) in central Canada to test the effects of island area and isolation on species richness and abundance of carabid beetles as a function of body size, wing length, and breeding season. A total of 10,018 individual beetles from 37 species were collected during the frost-free period of 2013 using transects of pitfall traps on 30 forested islands ranging in area from 0.2 to 980.7 ha. Life-history traits improved the predictive ability and significantly modified the shape of species-area and abundance-area curves. Abundance and richness of small-bodied (< 13.9 mm), macropterous (winged), and spring-breeding species decreased with island area and increased with isolation. In contrast, richness and abundance of larger-bodied (> 14.0 mm) and flightless species increased with area, but not isolation. Body size of female Carabus taedatus Fabricius, the largest-bodied species, was positively related to island area, while body size on the adjacent mainland was most similar to that on smaller islands. Overall, species with large body size and low dispersal ability, as indicated by flightlessness, were most sensitive to reductions in area. We suggest that large-bodied, flightless species are rare on small islands because habitat is less suitable for them and immigration rates are lower because they depend on freshwater drift for dispersal to islands.

Streams draining the Cypress Hills support unique and understudied macroinvertebrate communities in Saskatchewan, Canada. Here, we report the discovery of a species of caddisfly new to the Cypress Hills and Saskatchewan,Neophylax splendensDenning (Trichoptera: Thremmatidae). Larvae were collected early in May 2012, and are found to enter pre-pupal diapause in mid-June until mid-September. Larvae were identified asN. splendensby morphological characters and verified with genetic analysis. Its occurrence strengthens the biogeographical link between the montane regions in British Columbia, Canada and Utah, United States of America with the southwest corner of Saskatchewan. This study highlights the importance of seasonal sampling, resolute species level identifications in biological surveys and the use of genetic analyses to obtain this level of identification.

Captures of insects in pitfall traps are affected by features of trap design that may confound the interpretation of data. One such feature is a lid suspended over the opening of the trap to exclude debris and rainwater. In this study, we tested whether use of these lids affected captures of carabid beetles by altering the light conditions at the opening to the trap. In one experiment, we examined the effects of lid transparency (opaque, semitransparent, or transparent) on catch rates. In a second experiment, we manipulated the heights (high, medium, or low) of vegetation adjacent to the traps to test for lid transparency and vegetation height interactions. We found that significantly more carabids were captured with use of transparent lids compared with other lid transparencies. Fewest Agonum cupreum Dejean, 1831, were captured with use of opaque lids. No other effects were detected. Given these results, we advocate the use of transparent lids, which provide the benefits of traditional opaque lids while minimizing the effects of lid use on light conditions at the opening to the trap.

During research on brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis [Mitchill]), we collected larval and pupal specimens of the midge Odontomesa fulva (Kieffer) (Diptera: Chironomidae) from Pine Cree Creek, in the Cypress Hills area of the Northern Great Plains of Saskatchewan, Canada. This record is the first observation of O. fulva from the province. The larvae of the population of O. fulva in this study prefer shallow pools in this first-order, cold water stream. The species displays a univoltine emergence phenology. This range extension of O. fulva highlights and reinforces the importance of the Cypress Hills to the unique aquatic faunal biodiversity and ecology of Saskatchewan and the Northern Great Plains.

Previously, it was concluded that the nervous systems of the juvenile snails were not capable of mediating LTM. However, exposure and training of those juvenile snails in the presence of a predator cue significantly altered their ability to learn and form LTM. In addition, there are some strains of Lymnaea which have been identified as ‘smart’. These snails form LTM significantly better than the lab-bred strain. Here we show that juveniles of two smart snail strains are not only capable of associative learning, but also have the capacity to form LTM following a single 0.5h training session. We also show that freshly collected ‘wild’ ‘average’ juveniles are also not able to form LTM. Thus, the smart snail phenotype in these strains is expressed in juveniles.

Naturally occurring deuterium ((2)H) in biota can be used to trace movement, migration and geographic origin of a range of organisms. However, to evaluate movements of animals using δ(2)H measurements of tissues, it is necessary to establish the turnover time of (2)H in the tissues and the extent of isotopic discrimination from different environmental (2)H sources to those tissues. We investigated the turnover of (2)H in lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) blood by manipulating both environmental water δ(2)H and diet δ(2)H over a four-month period. The half-life of deuterium in lake sturgeon blood was 37.9 days after an increase in the environmental water δ(2)H of +714 ‰. However, no clear turnover in blood (2)H occurred over the same period in a separate trial following a change of -63.8 ‰ or +94.2 ‰ in diet. These findings suggest that environmental water (2)H exchanges much faster with blood than diets and that blood δ(2)H values can be used to trace movements of sturgeon and other fish moving among isotopically distinct waters.

All Canadian lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) populations are listed under the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) due to their complex life history, loss of habitat and negative interactions with anthropomorphic activities. Lake sturgeon diets vary considerably across their range and depend on the local benthic invertebrate fauna, substrata, and competition with congener species. Hence, determining population-specific prey assemblages is a vital contribution to effective conservation efforts. We used carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes to identify lake sturgeon prey preferences for juvenile (100 cm) age classes and their trophic niche in the Saskatchewan River, SK, Canada. In this system, lake sturgeon were the top predator within the benthic food web with no direct competition for preferred prey items from congener species. Their diet was dominated by crayfish (49.1± 6.4%) and snails (36.3 ± 5.5%), with no significant differences between age classes. Furthermore, lake sturgeon favoured deep rocky pools throughout the river; a habitat where crayfish and snails are typically found. Therefore, conservation efforts should be directed at preserving these habitats for the residing benthic invertebrate community, and the lake sturgeon’s ability to access them.

Canadian water bodies are presently experiencing fluctuations in orconectid crayfish ranges largely as a result of human activities. The range of Orconectes virilis , Canada’s most widespread crayfish, is expanding westward into previously uninhabited water bodies of Alberta. This species is also set to re-colonize watersheds in the eastern extent of its range as post-acidification recovery of aquatic ecosystems continues. In addition, the non-native Orconectes rusticus has invaded Central Canada. This species has the potential to rapidly invade boreal water bodies and out-compete native congeners, including O. virilis. Both these crayfish species are known to affect benthic ecosystems and their invasions may have adverse consequences for Canadian water bodies if left unchecked. Here we review the current documented distribution of O. virilis and O. rusticus in Canada, and identify the potential impacts that their invasion may have on boreal aquatic ecosystems. Finally, we consider options that resource managers might consider to contend with these invasions.

Reintroduction of functionally important species is considered a key strategy for restoring damaged ecosystems. However, the sudden reappearance of an extirpated species may have adverse ecological impacts, degrading ecosystem services. Therefore, we experimentally reintroduced the crayfish Orconectes virilis into a biologically recovering, formerly acidified Boreal Shield lake (Lake 302S, Experimental Lakes Area, Canada) to determine its effect on the littoral food web following a 17-year absence. In June 2004, a single-factor experimental design consisting of two treatment levels (crayfish-less control versus 1.8 introduced crayfish·m–2) was replicated five times for a total of 10 littoral cages (4 m2). Orconectes virilis significantly (P < 0.05) suppressed the total biomass of other benthic invertebrates by 70% primarily because of declines in larval damselflies and midges. In addition, crayfish reduced periphytic biomass by 90% (P < 0.001). Stable isotopic analyses of the mesocosm food webs further indicated that O. virilis likely functioned as an omnivore, exerting direct and possibly indirect effects on other invertebrates and periphyton. Our findings highlight how the reintroduction of O. virilis must be balanced with adequate fish predation to prevent this species from becoming an invader and negatively affecting the productive capacity of boreal lakes.

The benthic macroinvertebrate fauna of southern Saskatchewan, Canada, has received little attention relative to other regions of western North America. Therefore, little is known of the related aquatic ecosystem health and biogeography of regional aquatic insects. Here we present the results of an aquatic macroinvertebrate survey for the Pipestone Creek watershed in southeastern Saskatchewan. We qualitatively sampled aquatic macroinvertebrates in 5 sites on 4 dates through spring, summer, and fall 2006. Sampling produced 294 taxa of macroinvertebrates including 25 provincial range extensions to the southeast corner of the province. Presence/absence data of taxa grouped the sites into lentic and lotic sites. However, the relative proportions of the taxa varied greatly among sites, with no 2 sites having a community similarity greater than 50%. Functional feeding group analyses separated the sites into collector-dominated and scraper/grazer-dominated sites. However, the taxonomic make-up of the feeding groups varied among sites and also among dates. A modified Hilsenhoff Biotic Index of the site communities indicated that all were influenced by organic pollution. Results of this study suggest that although the watershed is enormously diverse, its biological communities are likely influenced by organic pollution. Further, range expansions of species found here, such as the stonefly Perlesta placida, have implications for invasion pathways and post-glaciation species islands in a prairie landscape.

Mutualistic relationships between ants and aphids are well studied but it is unknown if aphid-attending ants place a greater relative importance on defending aphids from aphid-predators or from competing ant colonies. We tested the hypothesis that aphid-attending ants defend their aphids against aphid-predators more aggressively than against ants from neighboring colonies. We conducted introduction trials by placing an individual non-predatory insect, an aphid-predator, or a foreign conspecific ant on the leaf of a resident ant. We found that ants did not attack non-predatory insects, but did attack competing ants and aphid-predators. When we presented resident ants with both the threats (i.e., predator and competitor) at the same time, residents always attacked potential competitors as opposed to aphid-predators. We suggest this behavior may reduce the likelihood of raids by neighboring colonies. Ants appear to balance both the energetic costs of making an attack and the costs associated with losing aphids to a predator, against the benefits of signaling their defensive ability to rivals and/or preventing rivals from gaining knowledge of a potential food resource.

We present a methodological study that aims to help placate some of the criticism surrounding the use of pitfall trapping for carabid beetles in ecological studies. Because pitfall trap catches are dependent on the activity of carabids and not solely on density, characteristics of the trap construction may influence the success of the trap in different habitat types. Specifically, traditional opaque wooden lids may change the temperature and sun exposure of a trap relative to its surroundings. These abiotic factors may vary with the vegetation structure present around the trap. Thus, traditional opaque lids may offer a shade refuge in low vegetation habitats. We hypothesized that a change in microclimate associated with lid transparency would alter the behavior of ground beetles and thereby lead to a bias in trap catch results. Many rivers are intensely managed due to anthropogenic influences such as dams, channelization, and water provision for municipalities, agriculture, and industry. With this growing pressure on fluvial systems comes a greater need to evaluate the state of their ecosystems. The purpose of this research is to use a geospatial model of the Qu’Appelle River in Saskatchewan to distinguish instream macroinvertebrate habitats at the family level. River geomorphology was assessed through the use of ArcGIS and digital elevation models; with these tools, the sinuosity, slope, fractal dimension, and stream width of the river were processed. Subsequently, Principal Component Analysis, a clustering technique, revealed areas with similar sets of geomorphological characteristics. These similar typology sequences were then grouped into geomorphological response units (GRUs), designated a color, and mapped into a geospatial model. Macroinvertebrate data was then incorporated to reveal several relationships to the model. For instance, certain GRUs contained more highly sensitive species and healthier diversity levels than others. Future possibilities for expanding on this project include incorporating stable isotope data to evaluate the food-web structure within the river basin. Although GRUs have been very successful in identifying fish habitats in other studies, the macroinvertebrates may be too sessile and their habitat too localized to be identified by such large river units. Units may need to be much shorter (250 m) to better identify macroinvertebrate habitat.

DNA barcoding of aquatic macroinvertebrates holds much promise as a tool for taxonomic research and for providing the reliable identifications needed for water quality assessment programs. A prerequisite for identification using barcodes is a reliable reference library. We gathered 4165 sequences from the barcode region of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene representing 264 nominal and 90 provisional species of mayflies (Insecta: Ephemeroptera) from Canada, Mexico, and the United States. No species shared barcode sequences and all can be identified with barcodes with the possible exception of some Caenis. Minimum interspecific distances ranged from 0.3–24.7% (mean: 12.5%), while the average intraspecific divergence was 1.97%. The latter value was inflated by the presence of very high divergences in some taxa. In fact, nearly 20% of the species included two or three haplotype clusters showing greater than 5.0% sequence divergence and some values are as high as 26.7%. Many of the species with high divergences are polyphyletic and likely represent species complexes. Indeed, many of these polyphyletic species have numerous synonyms and individuals in some barcode clusters show morphological attributes characteristic of the synonymized species. In light of our findings, it is imperative that type or topotype specimens be sequenced to correctly associate barcode clusters with morphological species concepts and to determine the status of currently synonymized species.

Pitfall traps were employed to investigate the effects of post-fire salvage logging on abundance of pill beetles (Coleoptera: Byrrhidae) across an ecotone from unsalvaged habitat into the interior of a salvaged stand in the Canadian boreal forest. Byrrhids (mainly Byrrhus geminatus LeConte) were dramatically more abundant at the edge of salvaged habitat and more common in the salvage habitat relative to the unsalvaged stand. This holarctic beetle, herein reported for the first time from Alberta, is characteristic of disturbance, and its abundance appears to reflect a relative degree of disturbance over natural post-fire conditions.

We report a population of the mussel the black sandshell (Ligurnia recta [Lamarck, 1819]) from the Carrot River in Saskatchewan, far north of the species' known range in southern Manitoba and northwestern Ontario. Ligumia recta is reported to be declining substantially in its abundance and range, and this occurrence provides valuable information for the construction of a species status report in Canada.
