Increasingly, consumers are paying attention to healthier food diets, “healthy” food attributes (such as “freshness”, “naturalness” and “nutritional value”), and the overall sustainability of production and processing methods. Other significant trends include a growing demand for regional and locally produced/supplied and less processed food. To meet these demands, food production and processing need to evolve to preserve the raw material and natural food properties while ensuring such sustenance is healthy, tasty, and sustainable. In parallel, it is necessary to understand the influence of consumers’ practices in maintaining the beneficial food attributes from purchasing to consumption. The whole supply chain must be resilient, fair, diverse, transparent, and economically balanced to make different food systems sustainable. This chapter focuses on the role of dynamic value chains using biodiverse, underutilised crops to improve food system resilience and deliver foods with good nutritional and health properties while ensuring low environmental impacts, and resilient ecosystem functions.

This report presents summary findings of a study looking at how the UK’s food production can align to enable development of a food system that better meets requirements for a healthy diet and a sustainable environment. The COVID-19 pandemic and post- EU exit recoveries present an opportunity to realign the food system with human health needs and sustainable, decarbonised production systems. Researchuses four plausible scenarios (Scenarios for UK Food and Nutrition Security in the wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic | Zenodo) to explore the range of possible options using land use change, agroecological approaches, use of legumes and new cultivation technology e.g. vertical farming. This report is part of a series from the ESRC 'UK food and nutrition security during and after the COVID-9 pandemic (GrantES/V004433/1).

This report should be assimilated in parallel with the ‘Activity Plan – Year IV’ for the final year of the TRUE project, and it should also be noted that this report supersedes some of the information given in Deliverable 9.9 (Project Review, Impact and Legacy Plan – Report I) due to changes in the delivery plan, and delays associated with the impacts of COVID-19. Also, as the TRUE project draws to completion on Sept. 30th 2021, and effort progresses into a phase which is not specifically funded, it is important that effort is focused upon those key activities which has the potential to establish improved legume-based futures for all those who will become involved.

Annually, data and key outputs/deliverables are gathered by WP1 and synthesised into practical briefing media such as notes for stakeholders, to inform members of the public of new insight and products via press releases, including trade press. These will be circulated in a range of languages of the Regional Clusters and will also be aimed to policymakers at regional, national and EU level.

Throughout the lifetime of the TRUE project, risk management has been a continuous process. Risk assessment was updated throughout the project as unexpected sources of risk were identified. Mitigation measures were defined to decrease the probability and impact of risks. This document outlines how risks were managed, identified, analysed, monitored, and controlled during the project using the risk register.

The series of sustainability assessment models and their integrated model reported in the Deliverables D8.2 and D8.3 are inbuilt into a web-based decision support system (DSS) called Pathfinder. It provides assessment and analysis of the sustainability performance of the entire agri-food chain and its links. This Deliverable introduces the conceptual structure of the DSS, provides a description of the key modules and how they have been developed and gives details on the implementation of the web-based decision support tool. This report constitutes an overview assessment of how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the UK���s food and nutrition security. It considers how the various parts of the food system have been impacted and what the consequences have been. It reports indications of sustained food prices increasing globally, which coupled with economic downturn, will exacerbate existing inequalities between being food secure and insecure, both in the UK and globally., This is one of several products uploaded to this repository from a UKRI Agile Response funded project supported through the Economic and Social Research Council "UK Food and Nutrition Security during and after the COVID-19 pandemic".

The food- and feed-value systems in the European Union are not protein self-sufficient. Despite the potential of legume-supported production systems to reduce the externalities caused by current cultivation practices (excessive use of N fertilizer) and improve the sustainability of the arable cropping systems and the quality of human diets, sufficient production of high-protein legume grains in Europe has not been achieved due to multiple barriers. Identifying the barriers to the production and consumption of legumes is the first step in realizing new pathways towards more sustainable food systems of which legumes are integral part. In this study, we engage stakeholders and decision-makers in a structured communication process, the Delphi method, to identify policy interventions leveraging barriers that hinder the production and consumption of legumes in the EU. This study is one of a kind and uses a systematic method to reach a common understanding of the policy incoherencies across sectors. Through this method we identify policy interventions that may promote the production of legumes and the creation of legume-based products in the EU. Policies that encourage reduced use of inorganic N fertilizer represent an important step toward a shift in the increased cultivation of legumes. Relatedly, investment in R&amp, D, extension services, and knowledge transfer is necessary to support a smooth transition from the heavy use of synthetic N fertilizer in conventional agriculture. These policy interventions are discussed within current EU and national plant-protein strategies.

This Deliverable presents our final policy evaluation report giving, ‘An overview and classification of European and international policies to support legume-based systems’. This key output was developed to deliver four policy briefs - to help build positive, proactive policies to support the realisation of more sustainable legume-based systems.
