Abstract

Fairy rings promoting circular greening belts in the vegetation can shape soil microbial communities by altering soil conditions. Knowledge about soil variables involved in this process is incomplete. We characterised the soil microbial communities of six fairy rings in a montane grassland using phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) profiling, and studied if changes in soil properties corresponded to changes in soil microbial PLFA patterns. Exchangeable potassium (K) decreased inside the current rings, while soil moisture increased in the zones where the greening belts were two years before sampling (R2015). Fairy ring associated changes in PLFA composition were highly related to soil K. Gram-negative bacteria were associated with the zones outside the ring with the highest K content, whereas Gram-positive bacteria proportions increased inside the ring-affected zones. An environmental stress indicator, the iso to anteiso ratio of PLFA 17:0, decreased in the R2015 zones, coinciding with the highest soil moisture contents. Our findings highlight the unreported importance of soil K in fairy ring dynamics affecting microbial communities. This common omission could lead to incorrect conclusions. Hence, the effects of fairy rings on soil should be further tested. Highlights Exchangeable potassium (K) decreased inside the current fairy rings. Fairy ring associated changes in PLFA microbial composition were present related to soil K. Soil moisture increased in the zones where the rings were 2 years before sampling. Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, students had to adapt to different online learning strategies and approaches. In this study, the aim was to determine what lesson delivery methods would cater to and satisfy the learning needs of students with different personality types. Students of the Adventist University of the Philippines Academy were selected as participants in this descriptive-correlational study. The data showed that participants' personalities revealed average levels of extraversion, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness, and high levels of agreeableness. The three lesson delivery methods used, namely, synchronistic, recorded videos, and textual formats were all perceived as very good. Students with conscientiousness and openness personality traits preferred to experience all three lesson delivery methods, while those with high agreeableness preferred having synchronistic and recorded delivery methods. Students with high scores on the extraversion and neuroticism personality scales preferred a synchronistic lesson delivery method. Furthermore, agreeableness predicted a preference for the synchronistic delivery method. Finally, female students learned better when exposed to video recorded lessons. It was concluded that personality traits were associated with the effectiveness of lesson delivery methods as perceived by the students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

8. Livestock species rather than grazing intensity shape plant guild proportions in interaction with multiple environmental drivers in grassland from the Pyrenees.

Abstract

Questions: Does grazing management shape the proportion of plant guilds (grasses, legumes, forbs and sedges) in mountain grasslands?Which properties of grazing management have the greatest effect on the proportion of plant guilds: grazer diversity/identity or grazing intensity?Are the effects of grazing management on guild proportion modified by other environmental variables that explain plant guild distribution at broad spatial scales? Location: Mountains in the Pyrenees. Methods: We modelled the proportion of grasses, legumes, forbs and sedges using data from the PASTUS database (n = 96), which contains a wide range of environmental and management conditions due to the high variety of environmental conditions in mountain grasslands in the Pyrenees. We used a machine‐learning algorithm to find those variables that best explained the proportions of each plant guild. We focussed on the differences between the levels of grazing intensity and the grazing species included in the model, and on detecting interactions between grazing variables and climate, topography and soil conditions. Results: The proportion of forbs and grasses strongly depended on the grazing livestock species at broad spatial scales. Only soil pH showed a higher overall explanatory power on guild distribution. In general, forbs were favoured in cattle‐ and grasses in sheep‐grazed grasslands, the latter also being favoured on acidic soils, while forbs were favoured in more alkaline soil conditions. However, the effects of those factors (grazing species and soil pH) were modulated through interactions with several other environmental variables, including soil Mg, K and P, and terrain slope. In contrast, grazing intensity was a minor driver of guild distribution. Conclusions: Our results provide information about the relationship between plant functional diversity, indicated by the different plant guild proportions, and grazing management in the Pyrenean grasslands. This information could be useful for developing hypotheses for future experimental studies and for designing policies to improve the management of mountain grasslands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
