This is a case of a 61-year-old lady who presented to the lipid clinic with possible familial hypercholesterolaemia (Simon Broome Criteria). She was commenced on atorvastatin; however, 4 weeks later, she developed hepatitis, and therefore her atorvastatin was discontinued. Following that, her liver function tests normalized, and she was diagnosed with statin-induced hepatitis. Three years later, she was seen again in the lipid clinic with an uncontrolled lipid profile, and she was commenced on alirocumab, a Proprotein Convertase Subtilisin/Kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitor. A few days later, she developed hepatitis, and subsequently, the alirocumab was discontinued. She underwent a liver biopsy, which confirmed that she had Autoimmune Hepatitis (AIH) with presumed superimposed drug injury. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have gained attention in medicine for their potent antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. The use of silver nanoparticles in ophthalmic solutions raises concerns regarding potential toxicity of nanoparticles to ocular tissues, such as the cornea, conjunctiva, and retina, which necessitates further toxicity assessments aiding in the development of safer ophthalmic solutions. This study investigates the impact of AgNPs on corneal tissue using ophthalmic investigations, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and chemometric analyses. Three concentrations of AgNPs (0.48 µg/mL, 7.2 µg/mL, and 15.5 µg/mL) were topically applied twice daily for 10 days, synthesized biologically by reducing silver nitrate with almond kernels water extract. Corneas, obtained by cutting 2–3 mm below the ora serrata, were analyzed with FTIR spectroscopy and subjected to chemometric analyses. Results reveal AgNPs' influence on constituents with OH and NH groups, affecting corneal lipids and reducing the lipid saturation index. AgNPs alter both bulk and interfacial water, leading to changes in corneal hydration thus modifying corneal physico-chemical properties. The influence extends to the water environment around proteins and lipids, releasing bound water from phospholipids and disrupting hydrogen bonding networks around proteins. This symposium integrates findings across studiesconducted in both laboratory and classroom contexts todraw attention to the relationships between ExecutiveFunctions (EFs) and feelings of anxiety in a context witheducational consequences: Mathematics. EFs, the cognitiveresources including working memory and inhibitory controlthat enable attentional control, manipulation of mentalrepresentations, and task switching (Miyake et al, 2000),powerfully predict mathematics achievement (Bull & Lee,2014). Mathematics is also a domain in which anxiety andperformance pressure are often heightened, which can resultin worry ideation and load to EF resources (Foley et al,2017; Schmader & Beilock, 2012). However, despite theserelationships, mathematics cognition under pressure remainsunder-considered.

Chitin (Ct) is a crucial biopolymer present in fungi, algae, arthropods, and is usually obtained from crustacean shells. Chitosan (Cs) is a derivative from Ct deacetylation, and possesses numerous uses in various agro-industrial fields. Research on fungal-derived Ct and Cs is mostly focused on pharmaceutical uses, however their uses for plant disease control remain less explored. The main objective of the current study is to evaluate the possibility of using chitosan obtained from mushroom Pleurotus eryngii (Cs-Pe) for controlling some phytopathogens compared to commercial chitosan (C.Cs). This study is focused on the following key areas: (i) extracting Ct from P. eryngii mycelium and converting it to Cs through deacetylation, using both bleaching and non-bleaching methods; (ii) conducting a physico-chemical characterization and in vitro evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of the obtained Cs; (iii) performing an in vivo assessment of the phytotoxic and cytotoxic effects of Cs; and (iv) investigating in vivo the impact of the studied chitosan on fruit quality and its biocontrol efficacy against Monilinia laxa infections in plum fruits. Results showed that Cs-Pe, especially the unbleached one, displayed promising in vitro antimicrobial activity against the majority of tested pathogens. Regarding the cytotoxicity, the highest significant increase in cell abnormality percentage was observed in the case of C.Cs compared to Cs-Pe. In the in vivo study, Cs-Pe acted as a protective barrier, lowering and/or preventing moisture loss and firmness of treated plums. The studied Cs-Pe demonstrated notable efficacy against M. laxa which decreased the fruits' percentage decline. These results strongly suggest that Cs derived from P. eryngii is a potential candidate for increasing plums' shelf-life. BackgroundNeurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) is a genetic disorder that disrupts central nervous system development and neuronal function. Cognitively, NF1 is characterized by difficulties with executive control and visuospatial abilities. Little is known about the neural substrates underlying these deficits. The current study utilized Blood-Oxygen-Level-Dependent (BOLD) functional MRI (fMRI) to explore the neural correlates of spatial working memory (WM) deficits in patients with NF1.MethodsBOLD images were acquired from 23 adults with NF1 (age M = 32.69; 61% male) and 25 matched healthy controls (age M = 33.08; 64% male) during an in-scanner visuo-spatial WM task. Whole brain functional and psycho-physiological interaction analyses were utilized to investigate neural activity and functional connectivity, respectively, during visuo-spatial WM performance. Participants also completed behavioral measures of spatial reasoning and verbal WM.ResultsRelative to healthy controls, participants with NF1 showed reduced recruitment of key components of WM circuitry, the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and right parietal cortex. In addition, healthy controls exhibited greater simultaneous deactivation between the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) and temporal regions than NF1 patients. In contrast, NF1 patients showed greater PCC and bilateral parietal connectivity with visual cortices as well as between the PCC and the cerebellum. In NF1 participants, increased functional coupling of the PCC with frontal and parietal regions was associated with better spatial reasoning and WM performance, respectively; these relationships were not observed in controls.ConclusionsDysfunctional engagement of WM circuitry, and aberrant functional connectivity of 'task-negative' regions in NF1 patients may underlie spatial WM difficulties characteristic of the disorder.
