Abstract

Losing a loved one in older adulthood affects one's emotional well-being profoundly. The grief experienced by older adults, who may have shared significant experiences and memories with their loved ones, can be intensified by cumulative losses and is often not acknowledged by themselves or their caregivers. This study uses a descriptive quantitative cross-sectional design to determine the relationships between potential predictors and grief among older adults. This cross-sectional study uses purposive sampling and involves 134 older adults aged 60 years or above who had experienced significant loss within the past 60 months. A self-administered questionnaire assessed participants' demographic characteristics, loss experiences, grief, spirituality, and meaning-making. Multiple linear regression analysis was carried out to determine the significant predictors of meaning-making and spirituality regarding grief. The findings indicated significant negative associations between spirituality, meaning-making, and grief. This study emphasizes the importance of addressing the spiritual and meaning-making dimensions in supporting older adults in effectively managing grief-related distress. Future studies should consider longitudinal designs and further explore additional predictors to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the complex factors influencing grief and the healing process. 16. Preserving Qur’an Through Blind Eyes: Self-Regulation of Blind People in Memorizing the Qur’an

Abstract

AbstractThe present study aimed to investigate the self-regulation of blind people in memorizing the Qur’an. Eight blind Qur’an memorizers were interviewed about the internal motivation of Qur’an memorization, self-regulation, and Qur’an memorization with vision impairment. The research was conducted using a phenomenological approach on exploration of the lived experience of eight blind memorizers, who were selected using purposive and snowball techniques. Data were transcribed verbatim and analyzed by Moustakas’ phenomenological method. The findings revealed that (1) gratitude was the main factor in regulating the rest of the metacognitive process among the blind memorizers, (2) the motivation to benefit for others served as a metacognitive purpose for the blind memorizers, (3) memorization strategies including the repetitive listening at a specific time and place were used in improving and maintaining the memorization, and (4) the belief in not to see and commit sins through eyes enabled the blind memorizers to maintain the purity of heart and made it easier for them to memorize the Qur’an. Informants described two spiritual meanings of the self-regulation within themes of gratitude and maintenance of heart purity associated with the Qur’an memorization. Gratitude is associated with the self-efficacy in the motivational dimension, whereas the reflective aspect of heart purity due to being blind is related to the metacognitive component of self-regulation. The findings provided new knowledge and understanding of blind individuals’ experiences in the self-regulation and memorization of the Qur’an.

Abstract

Spousal death is one the most stressful life events that seriously affects the psychological well being of widowed. This study examined the mediating effects of social and personal religiosity on the psychological well being of widowed elderly people. The sample for this study was comprised of 1367 widowed and married elderly Muslims from Malaysia. Psychological well being, religiosity, and physical health were measured using WHO-5 Well being Index, Intrinsic Extrinsic religiosity scale, and a checklist of 16 physical health problems, respectively. Data analysis was conducted using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (version-13). As expected, bivariate correlation analysis revealed that widowhood is statistically and negatively associated with psychological well being. Results of multiple hierarchical regression analyses and Sobel test showed that only the indirect effect of widowhood through personal religiosity was statistically significant (Sobel = -2.79, p < .01). Sobel test for social religiosity was not significant (Sobel = -1.54, p > .05). The results of this study confirmed earlier studies, which found that widowhood negatively affects psychological well being of elderly people. Overall, the findings show that the potential solace provided by religiosity can decrease the negative effects of widowhood on the psychological well being of widowed elderly people. doi: 10.2190/OM.61.2.d
