Low energy educational buildings are becoming the standard for new buildings in European and Mediterranean partner countries. Meanwhile, the potential of efficient renovation of existing buildings continues to be a development focus in these countries. Technical solutions are continuously proposed by universities for eco-sustainable building renovation, but there is still a gap between designed models and real-world application. Med-EcoSuRe project is rooted in the key role that Mediterranean universities have to contribute to environmental development and combat climate change. The project brings together researchers and stakeholders to build a common understanding of the eco-sustainable building renovation issues and aims to empower regional knowledge-to-action process, starting by the university’s immediate neighbourhood, which is the university building.

The Palestinian electricity sector suffers from many electrical problems such as high electrical deficit rate, transmission losses, and absent energy management strategies. The electrical deficit rate is estimated around 30% of the total demand. Energy efficiency improvement is an important way to reduce electrical deficit with various opportunities available in a cost-effective manner. This paper presents a low cost electrical conservation through energy management to improve electrical energy efficiency in Gaza Strips. Using efficient light technology, reducing air leak, and cooling air source are few approaches available. This paper investigates identifying cost-effective energy efficiency measures and potentials. Energy audits have been performed at Gaza Technical Center (GTC), as commercial sector, and Palestine Factory (APF), as industrial sector. The result of this audits was a potential of 7.5% energy saving. Generalizing this result could reduce the electrical deficit rate in Gaza Strip by 3.3%. This paper leads to devise specific low cost electrical conservation approaches to commercial and industrial sectors; moreover, reduces the electrical deficit rate.

The Palestinian electricity sector suffers from many electrical problems among them high electrical deficit rate, annual demand/growth studies, and absent energy management strategies and skills. The electrical deficit rate is estimated around 30%. One strategic solution to reduce the rate of electrical deficit is through energy saving measures for the commercial sector in Gaza Strip. The two approaches selected are lumen design method and optimal thermostat calibration in summer seasonal. Energy audits and analysis were particularly performed at Gaza Training Center, as commercial sector, and achieved saving of about 7% from the total electrical consumption with no additional cost. If we assume this percentage is the average saving of electrical energy that could be achieved in commercial sector of Gaza Strip by adopting the no cost electrical energy actions, then the rate of electrical deficit deceases to 23.3 …

Energy sustainability can be considered as a transversal target of the 2030 Agenda. In the Regeneration of the Built Environment, energy efficiency (objective 7.2) and the use of renewable energy sources (objective 7.3) have to become the drivers of all policies for the rehabilitation of existing buildings and Universities take a leading role in the path towards climate neutrality. The paper describes a project methodology developed to implement Participatory Energy Retrofit interventions, through the Living Lab tool. The Participatory Energy Audit phase was tested during an international workshop held in the framework of the MedEcoSuRe (Mediterranean University as Catalyst for EcoSustainable Renovation) Project, funded by the European Union under the ENI CBC MED Programme.

The objective of this work is to develop a software tool for wind data implemented in Matlab with two partial goals: -Validate the wind data set through the quality control of wind data. -Analyze the wind data in order to generalize the obtained results. It is specifically developed to evaluate wind data collected in four weather stations in the Palestinian Territories. However, it is a general program, so wind data from any other source could be analyzed as well. The main goals of each of the parts, quality control and analysis, are explained below: -In the part of quality control, the aim is to find erroneous or suspicious values which deteriorate the quality of the data available using different evaluation tests. -In the part of assessment, once the data has been checked by the quality control, general information is obtained using the statistical methodology, such as the wind rose, Weibull distribution parameters, anemograms of the evolution of the wind in a specific period. Two different analyses will be carried out: a general analysis over a period of 3 years for Hebron, and a period of 2 years for Salfeet and Tubas; and a specific analysis for the year 2011, where the results of the different stations will be compared between each other, and with the results obtained in the general evaluation. The Palestinian electricity sector suffers from many problems such as high electrical deficit rate, high transmission losses, high electricity prices per kWh, annual growth and absence of energy management strategies and skills. The case studies are Gaza Training Center (GTC) and Automatic Palestine Factory (APF) located in Gaza Strip selected to demonstrate the use of energy investment models for each facility. The savings opportunities were identified for light system, compressed air, heating, ventilating and air conditioning, induction motor, and power factor correction during energy assessments. Each assessment identifies electrical energy, waste, and cost saving opportunities, and quantifies the expected savings, implementation cost and simple payback of each opportunity. The training center facility consumes 250,820 kWh per year of electricity and factory used 263,875 kWh per year. This research proposes four investment models for electrical energy conservation in Gaza Strip, no cost model, low cost model, medium cost model, and high cost model to conserve the electrical energy in various plants. Evaluation of measuring results showed that the estimated energy saving of no cost investment model is 9.6 % in GTC, low cost investment model is 7.5 and 7.8 % in GTC and APF, respectively, medium cost investment model is 19.6 % in GTC, and high cost investment model is 11% and 4% in GTC and APF, respectively. The outcome research can achieve 17.1 % from the total energy consumption (corresponding to 42890 kWh or 25262 NIS per year) in GTC and 12 % from the total energy consumption (corresponding to 31665 kWh or 18651 NIS per year) in APF by implementing some energy conservation models (no and low cost investment) on the electrical system and most electrical equipment in the facility. Finally, the research results can be used to assess the impact of electrical conservation models on reduction of electrical deficit rate as the first priority for this research and achieve a good investment in commercial and industrial sectors as a second priority to enhance and support the national economy.
