The electron antinuetrino flux limits are presented for the brightest gamma-ray burst (GRB) of all time, GRB221009A, over a range of 1.8-200 MeV using the Kamioka Liquid Scintillator Anti Neutrino Detector (KamLAND). Using a variety of time windows to search for electron antineutrinos coincident with the GRB, we set an upper limit on the flux under the assumption of various neutrino source spectra. No excess was observed in any time windows ranging from seconds to days around the event trigger time. The typical material bismuth shows a several-fold change in electrical resistivity at 4 K over a 400 {\AA} film thickness period. In 2021, we discovered a novel size effect with a period of 25 {\AA} on strongly correlated compound CaRuO_3. The change in film thickness of only one nanometer leads to an increase in electrical resistivity at 4 K by a factor of several billion. However, the excitation energy of 2.4 eV on insulating CaRuO_3 is too large to explain the mechanism by conventional quantum well. In this study, we clarify that the increases in electrical resistivity are accompanied by lattice expansion and caused by the Mott transitions. We measured in-plane X-ray diffraction on CaRuO_3 films and found a 24.8 {\AA} periodic thickness oscillation of the lattice spacing d_{(004)}. We determined the nesting vector from the Fermi surface and revealed the spin density wave with a period equivalent to the size effect. We concluded that the antiferromagnetic correlation appearing in the boundary conditions triggers the periodic Mott insulators depending on the film thickness. We present a search for neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay of $^{136}$Xe using the full KamLAND-Zen 800 dataset with 745 kg of enriched xenon, corresponding to an exposure of $2.097$ ton yr of $^{136}$Xe. This updated search benefits from a more than twofold increase in exposure, recovery of photo-sensor gain, and reduced background from muon-induced spallation of xenon. Combining with the search in the previous KamLAND-Zen phase, we obtain a lower limit for the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life of $T_{1/2}^{0\nu} > 3.8 \times 10^{26}$ yr at 90% C.L., a factor of 1.7 improvement over the previous limit. We have established a method to measure picograms-per-gram (pg g$^{-1}$) levels of $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th in scintillation films by combining the dry ashing method and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Trace amounts of $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th were measured in up to 2~g of the scintillation film with almost 100% collection efficiency. This paper details the experimental procedure, including the pretreatment of the samples and labware, detection limit of the method, collection efficiencies of $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th, and measurement of $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th in a polyethylene naphthalate film. This method is also applicable to $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th measurements in other low-background organic materials for rare event search experiments.

Particle dark matter could belong to a multiplet that includes an electrically charged state. WIMP dark matter ($\chi^{0}$) accompanied by a negatively charged excited state ($\chi^{-}$) with a small mass difference (e.g. $<$ 20 MeV) can form a bound-state with a nucleus such as xenon. This bound-state formation is rare and the released energy is $\mathcal{O}(1-10$) MeV depending on the nucleus, making large liquid scintillator detectors suitable for detection. We searched for bound-state formation events with xenon in two experimental phases of the KamLAND-Zen experiment, a xenon-doped liquid scintillator detector. No statistically significant events were observed. For a benchmark parameter set of WIMP mass $m_{\chi^{0}} = 1$ TeV and mass difference $\Delta m = 17$ MeV, we set the most stringent upper limits on the recombination cross section times velocity $\langle\sigma v\rangle$ and the decay-width of $\chi^{-}$ to $9.2 \times 10^{-30}$ ${\rm cm^3/s}$ and $8.7 \times 10^{-14}$ GeV, respectively at 90% confidence level.

A new ultra-low background high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector has been installed at the Kamioka underground experimental site. The background count rate in the energy range from 40 keV to 2700 keV is about 25% lower than that of the first HPGe detector installed in 2016, which has the same detector specification and similar shielding geometry. This paper describes the shielding configuration, including the cleaning of the material surface, the comparison of calibration data and simulation, the time variation of the background spectra, the sample measurement procedure, and some results of the radioactivity in the selected samples.

Cosmic-ray muons produce various radioisotopes when passing through material. These spallation products can be backgrounds for rare event searches such as in solar neutrino, double-beta decay, and dark matter search experiments. The KamLAND-Zen experiment searches for neutrinoless double-beta decay in 745kg of xenon dissolved in liquid scintillator. The experiment includes dead-time-free electronics with a high efficiency for detecting muon-induced neutrons. The production yields of different radioisotopes are measured with a combination of delayed coincidence techniques, newly developed muon reconstruction and xenon spallation identification methods. The observed xenon spallation products are consistent with results from the FLUKA and Geant4 simulation codes.

We report a measurement of the strange axial coupling constant $g_A^s$ using atmospheric neutrino data at KamLAND. This constant is a component of the axial form factor of the neutral-current quasielastic (NCQE) interaction. The value of $g_A^s$ significantly changes the ratio of proton and neutron NCQE cross sections. KamLAND is suitable for measuring NCQE interactions as it can detect nucleon recoils with low-energy thresholds and measure neutron multiplicity with high efficiency. KamLAND data, including the information on neutron multiplicity associated with the NCQE interactions, makes it possible to measure $g_A^s$ with a suppressed dependence on the axial mass $M_A$, which has not yet been determined. For a comprehensive prediction of the neutron emission associated with neutrino interactions, we establish a simulation of particle emission via nuclear deexcitation of $^{12}$C, a process not considered in existing neutrino Monte Carlo event generators. Energy spectrum fitting for each neutron multiplicity gives $g_A^s =-0.14^{+0.25}_{-0.26}$, which is the most stringent limit obtained using NCQE interactions without $M_A$ constraints. The two-body current contribution considered in this analysis relies on a theoretically effective model and electron scattering experiments and requires future verification by direct measurements and future model improvement.

Various WIMP dark matter searches using the full data set of XMASS-I, a single-phase liquid xenon detector, are reported in this paper. Stable XMASS-I data taking accumulated a total live time of 1590.9 days between November 20, 2013 and February 1, 2019 with an analysis threshold of ${\rm 1.0\,keV_{ee}}$. In the latter half of data taking a lower analysis threshold of ${\rm 0.5\,keV_{ee}}$ was also available through a new low threshold trigger. Searching for a WIMP signal in the detector's 97~kg fiducial volume yielded a limit on the WIMP-nucleon scattering cross section of ${\rm 1.4\times 10^{-44}\, cm^{2}}$ for a ${\rm 60\,GeV/c^{2}}$ WIMP at the 90$\%$ confidence level. We also searched for WIMP induced annual modulation signatures in the detector's whole target volume, containing 832~kg of liquid xenon. For nuclear recoils of a ${\rm 8\,GeV/c^{2}}$ WIMP this analysis yielded a 90\% CL cross section limit of ${\rm 2.3\times 10^{-42}\, cm^{2}}$. At a WIMP mass of ${\rm 0.5\, GeV/c^{2}}$ the Migdal effect and Bremsstrahlung signatures were evaluated and lead to 90\% CL cross section limits of ${\rm 1.4\times 10^{-35}\, cm^{2}}$ and ${\rm 1.1\times 10^{-33}\, cm^{2}}$ respectively.

This paper reports the development and detailed properties of about 13 tons of gadolinium sulfate octahydrate, $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$, which has been dissolved into Super-Kamiokande (SK) in the summer of 2020. We evaluate the impact of radioactive impurities in $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ on DSNB searches and solar neutrino observation and confirm the need to reduce radioactive and fluorescent impurities by about three orders of magnitude from commercially available high-purity $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$. In order to produce ultra-high-purity $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$, we have developed a method to remove impurities from gadolinium oxide, Gd$_2$O$_3$, consisting of acid dissolution, solvent extraction, and pH control processes, followed by a high-purity sulfation process. All of the produced ultra-high-purity $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ is assayed by ICP-MS and HPGe detectors to evaluate its quality. Because of the long measurement time of HPGe detectors, we have employed several underground laboratories for making parallel measurements including LSC in Spain, Boulby in the UK, and Kamioka in Japan. In the first half of production, the measured batch purities were found to be consistent with the specifications. However,in the latter half, the $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ contained one order of magnitude more $^{228}$Ra than the budgeted mean contamination. This was correlated with the corresponding characteristics of the raw material Gd$_2$O$_3$, in which an intrinsically large contamination was present. Based on their modest impact on SK physics, they were nevertheless introduced into the detector. The decay of the primordial isotopes $^{238}\mathrm{U}$, $^{235}\mathrm{U}$, $^{232}\mathrm{Th}$, and $^{40}\mathrm{K}$ have contributed to the terrestrial heat budget throughout the Earth's history. Hence the individual abundance of those isotopes are key parameters in reconstructing contemporary Earth model. The geoneutrinos produced by the radioactive decays of uranium and thorium have been observed with the Kamioka Liquid-Scintillator Antineutrino Detector (KamLAND). Those measurements have been improved with more than 18-year observation time, and improvements in detector background levels mainly by an 8-year almost rector-free period now permit spectroscopy with geoneutrinos. Our results yield the first constraint on both uranium and thorium heat contributions. Herein the KamLAND result is consistent with geochemical estimations based on elemental abundances of chondritic meteorites and mantle peridotites. The High-Q model is disfavored at 99.76% C.L. and a fully radiogenic model is excluded at 5.2$\sigma$ assuming a homogeneous heat producing element distribution in the mantle., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Geophysical Research Letters on Aug 4th, 2022

A search for the neutrinoless quadruple beta decay of $^{136}$Xe was conducted with the liquid-xenon detector XMASS-I using $\rm 327\; kg \times 800.0 \; days$ of the exposure. The pulse shape discrimination based on the scintillation decay time constant which distinguishes $\gamma$-rays including the signal and $\beta$-rays was used to enhance the search sensitivity. No significant signal excess was observed from the energy spectrum fitting with precise background evaluation, and we set a lower limit of the half life of 3.7 $\times$ 10$^{24}$ years at 90$\%$ confidence level. This is the first experimental constraint of the neutrinoless quadruple beta decay of $^{136}$Xe.

We present the results of a search for core-collapse supernova neutrinos, using long-term KamLAND data from 2002 March 9 to 2020 April 25. We focus on the electron antineutrinos emitted from supernovae in the energy range of 1.8--111 MeV. Supernovae will make a neutrino event cluster with the duration of $\sim$10 s in the KamLAND data. We find no neutrino clusters and give the upper limit on the supernova rate as to be 0.15 yr$^{-1}$ with a 90% confidence level. The detectable range, which corresponds to a >95% detection probability, is 40--59 kpc and 65--81 kpc for core-collapse supernovae and failed core-collapse supernovae, respectively. This paper proposes to convert the supernova rate obtained by the neutrino observation to the Galactic star formation rate. Assuming a modified Salpeter-type initial mass function, the upper limit on the Galactic star formation rate is <(17.5--22.7) $M_{\odot} \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$ with a 90% confidence level., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal

The KamLAND-Zen experiment has provided stringent constraints on the neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay half-life in $^{136}$Xe using a xenon-loaded liquid scintillator. We report an improved search using an upgraded detector with almost double the amount of xenon and an ultralow radioactivity container, corresponding to an exposure of 970 kg yr of $^{136}$Xe. These new data provide valuable insight into backgrounds, especially from cosmic muon spallation of xenon, and have required the use of novel background rejection techniques. We obtain a lower limit for the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life of $T_{1/2}^{0\nu} > 2.3 \times 10^{26}$ yr at 90% C.L., corresponding to upper limits on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of 36-156 meV using commonly adopted nuclear matrix element calculations., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

We report the results of a search for MeV-scale astrophysical neutrinos in KamLAND presented as an excess in the number of coincident neutrino interactions associated with the publicly available high-energy neutrino datasets from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. We find no statistically significant excess in the number of observed low-energy electron antineutrinos in KamLAND, given a coincidence time window of $\pm$500s, $\pm$1,000s, $\pm$3,600s, and $\pm$10,000s around each of the IceCube neutrinos. We use this observation to present limits from 1.8 MeV to 100 MeV on the electron antineutrino fluence, assuming a mono-energetic flux. We then compare the results to several astrophysical measurements performed by IceCube and place a limit at the 90% confidence level on the electron antineutrino isotropic thermal luminosity from the TXS 0506+056 blazar., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

We present the results of a time-coincident event search for low-energy electron antineutrinos in the KamLAND detector with gamma-ray bursts from the Gamma-ray Coordinates Network and Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor. Using a variable coincidence time window of $\pm$500s plus the duration of each gamma-ray burst, no statistically significant excess above background is observed. We place the world's most stringent 90% confidence level upper limit on the electron antineutrino fluence below 17.5 MeV. Assuming a Fermi-Dirac neutrino energy spectrum from the gamma-ray burst source, we use the available redshift data to constrain the electron antineutrino luminosity and effective temperature., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

The scintillation decay time constant of a ZnWO$_4$ crystal irradiated with $\alpha$-particles from $^{241}$Am was precisely investigated, and was found to depend on the incident direction of the $\alpha$-particles on the crystal. The longest decay time constant ($24.3\pm0.6~\mu$s) was obtained on the surface perpendicular to the b-axis of the crystal (Surface B). On Surfaces A and C, the decay constants were $20.0$ and $21.3\pm0.2~\mu$s, respectively. The scintillation yield of the ZnWO$_4$ was also anisotropic and depended on the incident direction of the heavy particles. The maximum yield was achieved on surface B, suggesting a correlation between the light yield and scintillation decay time constant of ZnWO$_4$ crystals., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for PTEP

We report on a search for electron antineutrinos ($\bar{\nu}_e$) from astrophysical sources in the neutrino energy range 8.3 to 30.8 MeV with the KamLAND detector. In an exposure of 6.72 kton-year of the liquid scintillator, we observe 18 candidate events via the inverse beta decay reaction. Although there is a large background uncertainty from neutral current atmospheric neutrino interactions, we find no significant excess over background model predictions. Assuming several supernova relic neutrino spectra, we give upper flux limits of 60--110 cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (90% CL) in the analysis range and present a model-independent flux. We also set limits on the annihilation rates for light dark matter pairs to neutrino pairs. These data improves on the upper probability limit of $^{8}$B solar neutrinos converting into $\bar{\nu}_e$'s, $P_{\nu_e \rightarrow \bar{\nu}_e} < 3.5\times10^{-5}$ (90% CL) assuming an undistorted $\bar{\nu}_e$ shape. We report the result of a search for neutrinos in coincidence with solar flares from the GOES flare database. The search was performed on a 10.8 kton-year exposure of KamLAND collected from 2002 to 2019. This large exposure allows us to explore previously unconstrained parameter space for solar flare neutrinos. We found no statistical excess of neutrinos and established 90% confidence level upper limits of $8.4 \times 10^7$ cm$^{-2}$ ($3.0 \times 10^{9}$ cm$^{-2}$) on electron anti-neutrino (electron neutrino) fluence at 20 MeV normalized to the X12 flare, assuming that the neutrino fluence is proportional to the X-ray intensity., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted October 27, 2021

There are many theories where a dark matter particle is part of a multiplet with an electrically charged state. If WIMP dark matter ($\chi^{0}$) is accompanied by a charged excited state ($\chi^{-}$) separated by a small mass difference, it can form a stable bound state with a nucleus. In supersymmetric models, the $\chi^{0}$ and the $\chi^{-}$ could be the neutralino and a charged slepton, such as the neutralino-stau degenerate model. The formation binding process is expected to result in an energy deposition of {\it O}(1--10 MeV), making it suitable for detection in large liquid scintillator detectors. We describe new constraints on the bound state formation with a xenon nucleus using the KamLAND-Zen 400 Phase-II dataset. In order to enlarge the searchable parameter space, all xenon isotopes in the detector were used. For a benchmark parameter set of $m_{\chi^{0}} = 100$ GeV and $\Delta m = 10$ MeV, this study sets the most stringent upper limits on the recombination cross section $\langle\sigma v\rangle$ and the decay-width of $\chi^{-}$ of $2.0 \times 10^{-31}$ ${\rm cm^3/s}$ and $1.1 \times 10^{-18}$ GeV, respectively (90\% confidence level).

We present the results of a search for MeV-scale electron antineutrino events in KamLAND in coincident with the 60 gravitational wave events/candidates reported by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration during their second and third observing runs. We find no significant coincident signals within a $\pm$ 500 s timing window from each gravitational wave and present 90% C.L. upper limits on the electron antineutrino fluence between $10^{8}$-$10^{13}\,{\mathrm cm^2}$ for neutrino energies in the energy range of 1.8-111 MeV., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We developed a CANDLES-III system to study the neutrino-less double beta (0$\nu\beta\beta$) decay of $^{48}$Ca. The proposed system employs 96 CaF$_{2}$ scintillation crystals (305 kg) with natural Ca ($^{\rm nat.}$Ca) isotope which corresponds 350\,g of $^{48}$Ca. External backgrounds were rejected using a 4$\pi$ active shield of a liquid scintillator surrounding the CaF$_2$ crystals. The internal backgrounds caused by the radioactive impurities within the CaF$_2$ crystals can be reduced effectively through analysis of the signal pulse shape. We analyzed the data obtained in the Kamioka underground for a live-time of 130.4\,days to evaluate the feasibility of the low background measurement with the CANDLES-III detector. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we estimated the background rate from the radioactive impurities in the CaF$_{2}$ crystals and the rate of high energy $\gamma$-rays caused by the (n, $\gamma$) reactions induced by environmental neutrons. The expected background rate was in a good agreement with the measured rate, i.e., approximately 10$^{-3}$ events/keV/yr/(kg of $^{\rm nat.}$Ca), in the 0$\nu\beta\beta$ window. In conclusion, the background candidates were estimated properly by comparing the measured energy spectrum with the background simulations. With this measurement method, we performed the first search for 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay in a low background condition using a detector with a Ca isotope, in which the Ca present was not enriched, in a scale of hundreds of kg. The $^{48}$Ca isotope has a high potential for use in 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay search, and is expected to be useful for the development of a next-generation detector for highly sensitive measurements., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Physical Review D

We performed a search for event bursts in the XMASS-I detector associated with 11 gravitational-wave events detected during LIGO/Virgo's O1 and O2 periods. Simple and loose cuts were applied to the data collected in the full 832 kg xenon volume around the detection time of each gravitational-wave event. The data were divided into four energy regions ranging from keV to MeV. Without assuming any particular burst models, we looked for event bursts in sliding windows with various time width from 0.02 to 10 s. The search was conducted in a time window between $-$400 and $+$10,000 s from each gravitational-wave event. For the binary neutron star merger GW170817, no significant event burst was observed in the XMASS-I detector and we set 90% confidence level upper limits on neutrino fluence for the sum of all the neutrino flavors via coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering. The obtained upper limit was (1.3-2.1)$\times 10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$ under the assumption of a Fermi-Dirac spectrum with average neutrino energy of 20 MeV. The neutrino fluence limits for mono-energetic neutrinos in the energy range between 14 and 100 MeV were also calculated. Among the other 10 gravitational wave events detected as the binary black hole mergers, a burst candidate with a 3.0$\sigma$ significance was found at 1801.95-1803.95 s in the analysis for GW151012. However, no significant deviation from the background in the reconstructed energy and position distributions was found. Considering the additional look-elsewhere effect of analyzing the 11 GW events, the significance of finding such a burst candidate associated with any of them is 2.1$\sigma$., Comment: 8 pages, 12 figures

Chemical extraction using a molecular recognition resin named "Empore Radium Rad Disk" was developed to improve sensitivity for the low concentration of radium (Ra). Compared with the previous method, the extraction process speed was improved by a factor of three and the recovery rate for $^{226}$Ra was also improved from 81$\pm$4% to $>$99.9%. The sensitivity on the 10$^{-1}$ mBq level was achieved using a high purity germanium detector. This improved method was applied to determine $^{226}$Ra in Gd$_2$(SO$_4$)$_3{\cdot}$8H$_2$O which will be used in the Super-Kamiokande Gadolinium project. We successfully developed a new photomultiplier tube (PMT) with a three-inch diameter, convex-shaped photocathode, R13111. Its prominent features include good performance and ultra-low radioactivity. The convex-shaped photocathode realized a large photon acceptance and good timing resolution. Low radioactivity was achieved by three factors: (1) the glass material was synthesized using low-radioactive-contamination material; (2) the photocathode was produced with $^{39}$K-enriched potassium; and (3) the purest grade of aluminum material was used for the vacuum seal. As a result each R13111 PMT contains only about 0.4 mBq of $^{226}$Ra, less than 2 mBq of $^{238}$U, 0.3 mBq of $^{228}$Ra, 2 mBq of $^{40}$K and 0.2 mBq of $^{60}$Co. We also examined and resolved the intrinsic leakage of Xe gas into PMTs that was observed in several older models. We thus succeeded in developing a PMT that has low background, large angular acceptance with high collection efficiency, good timing resolution, and long-term stable operation. These features are highly desirable for experiments searching for rare events beyond the standard model, such as dark matter particle interactions and neutrinoless double beta decay events.

We have searched for exotic neutrino-electron interactions that could be produced by a neutrino millicharge, by a neutrino magnetic moment, or by dark photons using solar neutrinos in the XMASS-I liquid xenon detector. We observed no significant signals in 711 days of data. We obtain an upper limit for neutrino millicharge of 5.4$\times$10$^{-12} e$ at 90\% confidence level assuming all three species of neutrino have common millicharge. We also set flavor dependent limits assuming the respective neutrino flavor is the only one carrying a millicharge, $7.3 \times 10^{-12} e$ for $\nu_e$, $1.1 \times 10^{-11} e$ for $\nu_{\mu}$, and $1.1 \times 10^{-11} e$ for $\nu_{\tau}$. These limits are the most stringent yet obtained from direct measurements. We also obtain an upper limit for the neutrino magnetic moment of 1.8$\times$10$^{-10}$ Bohr magnetons. In addition, we obtain upper limits for the coupling constant of dark photons in the $U(1)_{B-L}$ model of 1.3$\times$10$^{-6}$ if the dark photon mass is 1$\times 10^{-3}$ MeV$/c^{2}$, and 8.8$\times$10$^{-5}$ if it is 10 MeV$/c^{2}$.

The radioactive noble gas radon-222 ($\mathrm{^{222}Rn}$, or Rn) produced in the uranium series is a crucial background source in many underground experiments. We have estimated the adsorption property of Rn with Activated Carbon Fibers (ACFs) in air (Air), argon (Ar), and xenon (Xe) gas. In this study, we evaluated six ACFs, named A-7, A-10, A-15, A-20, A-25, and S-25, provided from UNITIKA Ltd. We measured intrinsic radioactivity of these ACF samples, and found A-20's radioactivity of the uranium series is $<5.5$~$\mathrm{mBq/kg}$ with $90\%$ confidence level. In Air and Ar gas, we found ACF A-15 has the adsorption efficiency of $1/10000$ reduction at maximum before saturation of Rn adsorption, and more than $97\%$ adsorption efficiency after the saturation. In Xe gas, we found ACF A-20 has the best Rn adsorption ability among tested ACFs. We also found S-25, A-25, and A-15 have similar Rn adsorption performance., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures

We have investigated the chiral charge-density wave (CDW) in $1T$-VSe$_2$ using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements and optical polarimetry measurements. With the STM mesurements, we revealed that the CDW intensities along each triple-$q$ directions are different. Thus the rotational symmetry of $1T$-VSe$_2$ is lower than that in typical two-dimentional triple-$q$ CDWs. We found that the CDW peaks form a kagome lattice rather than a triangular lattice. The Friedel oscillations have the chirality and the periodicity reflected properties of the background CDW. With the optical measurements in $1T$-VSe$_2$, we also observed a lower rotational symmetry with the polarization dependence of the transient reflectivity variation, which is consistent with the STM result on a microscopic scale. Both $1T$-TiSe$_2$ and $1T$-VSe$_2$ show chiral CDWs, which implies that such waves are usual for CDWs with the condition $H_\mathrm{CDW} \equiv q_{1}\cdot(q_{2} \times q_{3}) \neq0$., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, 1 Table

We report an in-situ measurement of the nuclear recoil (NR) scintillation decay time constant in liquid xenon (LXe) using the XMASS-I detector at the Kamioka underground laboratory in Japan. XMASS-I is a large single-phase LXe scintillation detector whose purpose is the direct detection of dark matter via NR which can be induced by collisions between Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) and a xenon nucleus. The inner detector volume contains 832 kg of LXe. $^{252}$Cf was used as an external neutron source for irradiating the detector. The scintillation decay time constant of the resulting neutron induced NR was evaluated by comparing the observed photon detection times with Monte Carlo simulations. Fits to the decay time prefer two decay time components, one for each of the Xe$_{2}^{*}$ singlet and triplet states, with $\tau_{S}$ = 4.3$\pm$0.6 ns taken from prior research, $\tau_{T}$ was measured to be 26.9$^{+0.7}_{-1.1}$ ns with a singlet state fraction F$_{S}$ of 0.252$^{+0.027}_{-0.019}$.We also evaluated the performance of pulse shape discrimination between NR and electron recoil (ER) with the aim of reducing the electromagnetic background in WIMP searches. For a 50\% NR acceptance, the ER acceptance was 13.7${\pm}$1.0\% and 4.1${\pm}$0.7\% in the energy ranges of 5--10 keV$_{\rm ee}$ and 10--15 keV$_{\rm ee}$, respectively., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures

A search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) was conducted with the single-phase liquid-xenon detector XMASS through inelastic scattering in which $^{129}$Xe nuclei were excited, using an exposure ($\rm 327\; kg \times 800.0 \; days$) 48 times larger than that of our previous study. The inelastic excitation sensitivity was improved by detailed evaluation of background, event classification based on scintillation timing that distinguished $\gamma$-rays and $\beta$-rays, and simultaneous fitting of the energy spectra of $\gamma$-like and $\beta$-like samples. No evidence of a WIMP signal was found. Thus, we set the upper limits of the inelastic channel cross section at 90\% confidence level, for example, $4.1\times 10^{-39} \;{\rm cm^2}$ for a $200\; {\rm GeV}/c^2$ WIMP. This result provides the most stringent limits on the SD WIMP-neutron interaction and is better by a factor of 7.7 at $200\;{\rm GeV}/c^2$ than the existing experimental limit., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures

A search for dark matter (DM) with mass in the sub-GeV region (0.32-1 GeV) was conducted by looking for an annual modulation signal in XMASS, a single-phase liquid xenon detector. Inelastic nuclear scattering accompanied by bremsstrahlung emission was used to search down to an electron equivalent energy of 1 keV. The data used had a live time of 2.8 years (3.5 years in calendar time), resulting in a total exposure of 2.38 ton-years. No significant modulation signal was observed and 90% confidence level upper limits of $1.6 \times 10^{-33}$ cm$^2$ at 0.5 GeV was set for the DM-nucleon cross section. This is the first experimental result of a search for DM mediated by the bremsstrahlung effect. In addition, a search for DM with mass in the multi-GeV region (4-20 GeV) was conducted with a lower energy threshold than previous analysis of XMASS. Elastic nuclear scattering was used to search down to a nuclear recoil equivalent energy of 2.3 keV, and upper limits of 2.9 $\times$10$^{-42}$ cm$^2$ at 8 GeV was obtained., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

XMASS-I is a single-phase liquid xenon detector whose purpose is direct detection of dark matter. To achieve the low background requirements necessary in the detector, a new model of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), R10789, with a hexagonal window was developed based on the R8778 PMT used in the XMASS prototype detector. We screened the numerous component materials for their radioactivity. During development, the largest contributions to the reduction of radioactivity came from the stem and the dynode support. The glass stem was exchanged to the Kovar alloy one and the ceramic support were changed to the quartz one. R10789 is the first model of Hamamatsu Photonics K. K. that adopted these materials for low background purposes and provided a groundbreaking step for further reductions of radioactivity in PMTs. Measurements with germanium detectors showed 1.2$\pm$0.3 mBq/PMT of $^{226}$Ra, less than 0.78 mBq/PMT of $^{228}$Ra, 9.1$\pm$2.2 mBq/PMT of $^{40}$K, and 2.8$\pm$0.2 mBq/PMT of $^{60}$Co. High-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors are widely used for the measurement of the low concentrated radioactivities. For the Super-Kamiokande-Gadolinium project, the concentration of radium in Gd$_2$(SO$_4$)$_3{\cdot}$8H$_2$O is determined by using HPGe detectors. The amount of the sample is generally limited by the size of the sample space of a HPGe detector. This leads the limitation of the detector efficiency. A new method of chemical extraction using the molecular recognition resin was developed to minimize this problem. Using the developed method, radium could be extracted from Gd$_2$(SO$_4$)$_3{\cdot}$8H$_2$O and concentrated to smaller amount of the resin at a recovery rate of 81$\pm$4\%, which was estimated by using barium as a recovery monitor. This made it possible to set the sample closer to an HPGe crystal and reduce self screening effect, resulting in increasing the detection efficiency of an HPGe detector.
