1. Muonic X-Ray Measurement for the Nuclear Charge Distribution: the Case of Stable Palladium Isotopes

Abstract

Background: The nuclear charge radius and distribution are the most fundamental quantities of the atomic nucleus. From the muonic transition energies, the absolute charge radius has been experimentally obtained, while there have been no established methods to discuss the distribution. Purpose: The muonic transition energies for five palladium isotopes with the mass number $A = 104$, $105$, $106$, $108$ and $110$ were measured. The procedure to deduce the charge radii and the method to discuss the charge distribution from the muonic transition energies are proposed. Method: The experiment was performed at the MuSIC-M1 beamline at Research Center for Nuclear Physics, Osaka University. A continuous muon beam impinged on the enriched palladium targets. Muonic X rays were measured by high-purity germanium detectors. Results: The muonic transition energies up to $4f$-$3d$ transitions were determined for five palladium isotopes. Discussion and conclusion: The root-mean-square charge radii are deduced assuming the two-parameter Fermi distribution. The charge distribution of the nucleus is discussed employing the Barrett model. The muonic transition energies of the $3d$-$2p$ transitions are crucial to discuss both the charge radius and the charge distribution.

2. Quenching of gamma0 transition results from p-wave neutron inducing doorway mechanism

Abstract

Gamma-strength function essentially distinguishes the reaction mechanisms of charged particle inelastic and neutron capture reactions, reflecting from the ratios of transition of neutron capture to low-lying states. The extraordinary quenching of gamma_0 transition of p-wave neutron resonance reaction in 3s-region nucleus 57Fe is observed, for the first time, due to the non-forming 2p-1h doorway state activation which raises the strong intensities of gamma_1 and gamma_2. The enhancement of low energy gamma-strength function doesn't emerge in the neutron capture reaction resulting from the population of cascade transitions of low-lying states rather than primary transitions. The astrophysical reaction rates that are extracted from total and partial neutron capture cross sections of 57Fe might be adopted to constrain the abundance of the successive heavier isotopes in s-process., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Background:The design of new nuclear reactors and transmutation devices requires to reduce the present neutron cross section uncertainties of minor actinides. Purpose: Reduce the $^{243}$Am(n,$\gamma$) cross section uncertainty. Method: The $^{243}$Am(n,$\gamma$) cross section has been measured at the n_TOF facility at CERN with a BaF$_{2}$ Total Absorption Calorimeter, in the energy range between 0.7 eV and 2.5 keV. Results: The $^{243}$Am(n,$\gamma$) cross section has been successfully measured in the mentioned energy range. The resolved resonance region has been extended from 250 eV up to 400 eV. In the unresolved resonance region our results are compatible with one of the two incompatible capture data sets available below 2.5 keV. The data available in EXFOR and in the literature has been used to perform a simple analysis above 2.5 keV. Conclusions: The results of this measurement contribute to reduce the $^{243}$Am(n,$\gamma$) cross section uncertainty and suggest that this cross section is underestimated up to 25% in the neutron energy range between 50 eV and a few keV in the present evaluated data libraries.

Abstract

Discrete gamma-rays from the neutron capture state of 13C to its low-lying bound states have been measured using pulsed neutrons at En = 550 keV. The partial capture cross sections have been determined to be 1.7+/-0.5, 24.2+/-1.0, 2.0+/-0.4 and 1.0+/-0.4 microb for the ground (1/2-), first (1/2+), second (3/2-) and third (5/2+) excited states, respectively. From a comparison with theoretical predictions based on the non-resonant direct radiative capture mechanism, we could determine the spectroscopic factor for the 1/2+ state to be 0.80 +/- 0.04, free from neutron-nucleus interaction ambiguities in the continuum. In addition we have detected the contribution of the non-resonant d-wave capture component in the partial cross sections for transitions leading to the 1/2- and 3/2- states. While the s-wave capture dominates at En < 100 keV, the d-wave component turns out to be very important at higher energies. From the present investigation the 12C(n,gamma)13C reaction rate is obtained for temperatures in the range 10E+7 - 10E+10 K., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. 9. Neutron capture cross section of 185Re leading to ground and isomer states of 186Re in the keV-neutron energy region

Abstract

The neutron capture cross section of 185Re was measured in the astrophysically important energy region. Measurements were made using a neutron beam from a 7Li(p,n)7Be neutron source with energies ranging from 3 to 90 keV. Two different experimental techniques, time-of-flight (TOF) and activation methods, were employed. In the TOF experiments, the total neutron capture cross section of 185Re was determined by the pulse-height weighting technique. In the activation method, the partial capture cross section leading to the ground state of 186Re was measured by detecting decay γ-rays from neutron activated samples. The present cross section values were compared with evaluated cross section data and previous measurements. The difference between the TOF and activation results was smaller than experimental uncertainties. This suggests that the production cross section of isomer states of 186Re is very small.

11. Nonresonant p -wave direct capture and interference effect observed in the O 16 (n,γ) O 17 reaction

Abstract

We measured the total capture cross section of the O16(n,γ)O17 reaction, as well as partial cross sections leading to the ground (Jπ=5/2+) and first-excited (Jπ=1/2+) states in O17. The measurement was carried out at average neutron energies of 157, 349, 398, 427, 468, 498, and 556 keV by using pulsed neutrons produced via the Li7(p,n)Be7 reaction and a γ-ray detection system based on an anti-Compton NaI(Tl) spectrometer. We observed the interference effect between the 3/2- resonance state at 4554 keV of O17, corresponding to a neutron energy of 411 keV in the center-of-mass system, and a nonresonant contribution in the capture process. The measured partial cross sections are in good agreement with theoretical calculations obtained taking into account the interference between the 3/2- resonance and a nonresonant p-wave direct radiative capture contribution. Using the present results, together with our previous measurement, we derived the Maxwellian-averaged capture cross sections (MACS) for thermal energies between kT=5 and 100 keV, key quantities for s process nucleosynthesis studies in massive stars.

Abstract

A new data acquisition system (DAQ system) has been developed at the Accurate Neutron-Nucleus Reaction Measurement Instrument (ANNRI) facility in the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex, Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (J-PARC/MLF). DAQ systems for both the Ge detector system and the Li-glass detector system were tested by using a gold sample. The applicability of the time-of-flight method was checked. System performance was evaluated on the basis of digital conversion nonlinearity, energy resolution, multi-channel coincidence and dead time.

Abstract

The n_TOF neutron time-of-flight facility at CERN is used for high quality nuclear data measurements from thermal energy up to hundreds of MeV. In line with the CERN open data policy, the n_TOF Collaboration takes actions to preserve its unique data, facilitate access to them in standardised format, and allow their re-use by a wide community in the fields of nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics and various nuclear technologies. The present contribution briefly describes the n_TOF outcomes, as well as the status of dissemination and preservation of n_TOF final data in the international EXFOR library.

Abstract

The 235U neutron-induced cross section is widely used as reference cross section for measuring other fission cross sections, but in the resonance region it is not considered as an IAEA standard because of the scarce experimental data covering the full region. In this work, we deal with a new analysis of the experimental data obtained with a detection setup based on parallel plate ionization chambers (PPACs) at the CERN n_TOF facility in the range from 1 eV to 10 keV. The relative cross section has been normalised to the IAEA value in the region between 7.8 and 11 eV, which is claimed as well-known. Comparison with the ENDF/B-VII evaluation and the IAEA reference file from 100 eV to 10 keV are provided.

Abstract

The 238U fission cross section is an international standard beyond 2 MeV where the fission plateau starts. However, due to its importance in fission reactors, this cross-section should be very accurately known also in the threshold region below 2 MeV. The 238U fission cross section has been measured relative to the 235U fission cross section at CERN – n_TOF with different detection systems. These datasets have been collected and suitably combined to increase the counting statistics in the threshold region from about 300 keV up to 3 MeV. The results are compared with other experimental data, evaluated libraries, and the IAEA standards.

Abstract

The neutron capture cross sections and the capture γ-ray spectra of 138Ba were measured in the astrophysically important energy region. Measurements were made at neutron energies from 15 to 80 keV. The neutron energy was determined by the time-of-flight method. The γ-ray spectra showed that the primary transition pattern strongly depended on the incident neutron energy. The neutron capture cross sections were derived by the pulse height weighting technique. The present cross section values were compared with evaluated cross section data and previous measurements.

Abstract

The CERN Neutron Time-Of-Flight (n_TOF) facility is well suited to measure low cross sections as those of neutron-induced fission in subactinides. The cross section ratios of natPb and 209Bi relative to 235U and 238U were measured using PPAC detectors and a fragment coincidence method that allows us to identify the fission events. The present experiment provides first results for neutron-induced fission up to 1 GeV. Good agreement is found with previous experimental data below 200 MeV. The comparison with proton-induced fission indicates that the limiting regime where neutron-induced and proton-induced fission reach equal cross sections is close to 1 GeV.

Abstract

The n-TOF neutron time-of-flight facility at CERN is used for high quality nuclear data measurements from thermal energy up to hundreds of MeV. In line with the CERN open data policy, the n-TOF Collaboration takes actions to preserve its unique data, facilitate access to them in standardised format, and allow their re-use by a wide community in the fields of nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics and various nuclear technologies. The present contribution briefly describes the n-TOF outcomes, as well as the status of dissemination and preservation of n-TOF final data in the international EXFOR library. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2017.

Abstract

The U238 to U235 fission cross section ratio has been determined at n-TOF up to ≈1 GeV, with two different detection systems, in different geometrical configurations. A total of four datasets has been collected and compared. They are all consistent to each other within the relative systematic uncertainty of 3-4%. The data collected at n-TOF have been suitably combined to yield a unique fission cross section ratio as a function of neutron energy. The result confirms current evaluations up to 200 MeV. Good agreement is also observed with theoretical calculations based on the INCL++/Gemini++ combination up to the highest measured energy. The n-TOF results may help solve a long-standing discrepancy between the two most important experimental datasets available so far above 20 MeV, while extending the neutron energy range for the first time up to ≈1 GeV.

Abstract

The neutron-induced fission cross section of Np237 was experimentally determined at the high-resolution and high-intensity facility n_TOF, at CERN, in the energy range 100 keV to 9 MeV, using the U235(n,f) and U238(n,f) cross section standards below and above 2 MeV, respectively. A fast ionization chamber was used in order to detect the fission fragments from the reactions and the targets were characterized as far as their mass and homogeneity are concerned by means of α spectroscopy and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy respectively. Theoretical calculations within the Hauser-Feshbach formalism have been performed, employing the empire code, and the model parameters were tuned in order to successfully reproduce the experimental fission cross-sectional data and simultaneously all the competing reaction channels.

The U238 to U235 fission cross section ratio has been determined at n_TOF up to ≈1 GeV, with two different detection systems, in different geometrical configurations. A total of four datasets has been collected and compared. They are all consistent to each other within the relative systematic uncertainty of 3–4%. The data collected at n_TOF have been suitably combined to yield a unique fission cross section ratio as a function of neutron energy. The result confirms current evaluations up to 200 MeV. Good agreement is also observed with theoretical calculations based on the INCL++/Gemini++ combination up to the highest measured energy. The n_TOF results may help solve a long-standing discrepancy between the two most important experimental datasets available so far above 20 MeV, while extending the neutron energy range for the first time up to ≈1 GeV.

Abstract

The 238U to 23577 U fission cross section ratio has been determined at n_TOF up to 1 GeV, with two different detection systems, in different geometrical configurations. A total of four data sets has been collected and compared. They are all consistent to each other within the relative systematic uncertainty of 3-4%. Abstract

Background: The design of new nuclear reactors and transmutation devices requires to reduce the present neutron cross section uncertainties of minor actinides. Purpose: Improvement of the 243Am(n,γ ) cross section uncertainty. Method: The 243Am(n,γ ) cross section has been measured at the n_TOF facility at CERN with a BaF2 total absorption calorimeter, in the energy range between 0.7 eV and 2.5 keV. Results: The 243Am(n,γ ) cross section has been successfully measured in the mentioned energy range. The resolved resonance region has been extended from 250 eV up to 400 eV. In the unresolved resonance region our results are compatible with one of the two incompatible capture data sets available below 2.5 keV. The data available in EXFOR and in the literature have been used to perform a simple analysis above 2.5 keV. Conclusions: The results of this measurement contribute to reduce the 243Am(n,γ ) cross section uncertainty and suggest that this cross section is underestimated up to 25% in the neutron energy range between 50 eV and a few keV in the present evaluated data libraries., JRC.D.4-Standards for Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguards
