We review the current environmental pollution by mercury in the soils of Poland and Lithuania and in the sediments of the Baltic Sea. Mercury is documented to have many negative impacts on the environment as a toxic trace element. In many different chemical forms, it is being released into the environment by both geogenic and anthropogenic activities, with most being released from anthropogenic sources. Methylmercury is considered one of the most toxic forms found in the environment. Mercury levels in sediment and various point sources increased after World War II in the Baltic Sea, which was used as a dumpsite. Previous studies show noticeable differences in total mercury in the Baltic Sea. In the Warta and Odra rivers in Poland, mercury levels are also higher than the background value, though recent findings suggest that river sediments are not the main source of mercury to marine sediments. Concentrations in soils in Poland and Lithuania were below the level of limit values (1 and 1.5 mg/ kg−1 respectively), but Upper Silesia showed concentrations (up to 4.01 mg·kg−1) above the limit values. Furthermore, between 1992 and 2006, mercury levels in Wrocław dropped dramatically. The dominant trees in the area can affect mercury accumulation. No data were available for comparison with the soils in Estonia and Latvia.

Vehicle collisions with animals pose serious issues in countries with well-developed highway networks. Both expanding wildlife populations and the development of urbanised areas reduce the potential contact distance between wildlife species and vehicles. Many recent studies have been conducted to better understand the factors that influence wildlife–vehicle collisions (WVCs) and provide mitigation methods. Most of these studies examined road density, traffic volume, seasonal fluctuations, etc. However, in analysing the distribution of WVC, few studies have considered a spatial and significant distance geostatistical analysis approach that includes how different land-use categories are associated with the distance to WVCs. Our study investigated the spatial distribution of agricultural land, meadows and pastures, forests, built-up areas, rivers, lakes, and ponds, to highlight the most dangerous sections of roadways where WVCs occur. We examined six potential ‘hot spot’ distances (5–10–25–50–100–200 m) to evaluate the role different landscape elements play in the occurrence of WVC. The near analysis tool showed that a distance of 10–25 m to different landscape elements provided the most sensitive results. Hot spots associated with agricultural land, forests, as well as meadows and pastures, peaked on roadways in close proximity (10 m), while hot spots associated with built-up areas, rivers, lakes, and ponds peaked on roadways farther (200 m) from these land-use types. We found that the order of habitat importance in WVC hot spots was agricultural land < forests < meadows and pastures < built-up areas < rivers < lakes and ponds. This methodological approach includes general hot-spot analysis as well as differentiated distance analysis which helps to better reveal the influence of landscape structure on WVCs.

Geochemical and lithological parameters of sapropel in lakes, combined with pollen data and radiocarbon 14C dating, contain a wide spectrum of environmental information. This includes records of fluctuations of water level and changes of conditions of sedimentation, accumulation of organic matter and chemical elements due to climate change, human impacts and other environmental changes. Rising concentrations of hazardous substances in the natural sediments are likely to be a high risk to the natural environment. At the same time, they can greatly reduce opportunities for environmental engineering of lakes. Four lakes with different trophic states and anthropogenic pressures were chosen for this study in Lithuania. Higher concentrations of elements like Cr, Cu and Zn were not only detected in the top most layers of sapropel but also in deeper layers and are attributed to lithogenic association of trace elements in such deep layers. Concentrations of Pb were detected only in upper layers of sapropel which indicates the impact of anthropogenic activity. The main source of heavy metals was multidimensional anthropogenic pollution leading to a biogenic–anthropogenic association of elements. Sapropel with low concentrations of heavy metals exhibits a different inter-association matrix because most of the elements tend to form lithogenic–clastogenic associations.

Abundant resources, natural and organic material – sapropel containing a multitude of different chemical elements has a great potential to be used in different areas, but for now these rich resources are not widely used because of different chemical composition of sapropel research is very few. The article deals with silicon sapropel as a sorbent is able to absorb heavy metals from the solution depending on the time and the concentration of heavy metals in the solution. The sorption studies of heavy metal concentrations were measured in dry sapropel sample using Thermo Scientific Niton® XL2 series of X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XPS). Also, the heavy metal concentrations in solution were measured by atomic absorption spectrometer AAnalyst 200 (AAS). Get sapropel sorption capacity results are analyzed through absorption capacity curves and Matala ion removal efficiency curves. Also, comparing the results with the initial concentration of heavy metals sapropel and foreign authors used sorbent properties. After thorough research sapropel sorption capacity can be added to the knowledge of sapropel properties utilization. Article in Lithuanian. Silicinio sapropelio naudojimas sunkiesiems metalams šalinti iš tirpalo Santrauka Gausūs natūralios organinės medžiagos – sapropelio, kurio sudėtyje yra daug įvairių cheminių elementų, – ištekliai turi didelį potencialą būti panaudoti įvairiose srityse. Šiuo metu šie gausūs ištekliai nėra plačiai naudojami, nes atlikta labai nedaug sapropelio įvairios cheminės sudėties tyrimų. Straipsnyje nagrinėjama silicinio sapropelio kaip sorbento geba sorbuoti sunkiuosius metalus iš tirpalo, priklausomai nuo laiko ir sunkiųjų metalų koncentracijos tirpale. Atlikus sorbcijos tyrimus, sunkiųjų metalų koncentracijos matuotos sausame sapropelio mėginyje, naudojant Thermo Scientific Niton® XL2 serijos rentgeno spindulių fluorescencinį spektrometrą (RFS). Taip pat sunkiųjų metalų koncentracijos matuotos tirpale naudojant atominės absorbcijos spektrometrą AAnalyst 200 (AAS). AAS tyrimus atliko atestuota UAB „Vilniaus vandenys“ geriamojo vandens laboratorija. Gauti sapropelio sorbcinės talpos tyrimų rezultatai analizuojami sudarant adsorbcinės talpos kreives bei metalo jonų pašalinimo efektyvumo kreives. Taip pat rezultatai buvo palyginti su pradine sunkiųjų metalų koncentracija sapropelyje ir užsienio autorių naudotų sorbentų sorbcinėmis savybėmis. Atlikus tyrimus gautas 97,4 % sorbento-sapropelio pašalinimo efektyvumas sorbuojant šviną ir 97,24 % sorbuojant cinką. Tyrimų rezultatų paklaida patikrinta lyginant išmatuotą sorbento talpą su apskaičiuotąja. Švino adsorbcinės talpos paklaida siekia 4–9 mg/kg, o cinko 1–14 mg/kg. Antropogeninė veikla yra pagrindinis požeminio vandens taršos šaltinis pusiasalių (nerijų) teritorijose, todėl vertinimo metodai, sukurti vidinėms (žemyninėms) teritorijoms, gali būti netinkami pakrančių teritorijoms. Tyrėme nitratais paveiktų požeminio vandens šaltinių sąveikos sistemą pusiasalio (nerijos) aplinkoje naudodami lyginamuosius metodus. Tyrimų vieta – požeminio vandens gręžiniai Neringos mieste, kuriame azoto junginių koncentracijos požeminiame vandenyje padidėjo įrengus vandens ruošimo įrenginius. Vertinome amonio jonų ir amonio azoto / organinių junginių rodiklius, taip pat bendro azoto koncentraciją, siekdami parodyti, kad biologiniai procesai vyko šaltinio bei vandens ruošimo vietoje ir galėjo padidinti azoto koncentracijas. Derinami azoto junginių ir organinės anglies junginių kiekiai keitė vandens kokybės parametrus, taip buvo atskleisti būdai, kaip galima užkirsti kelią azoto junginių koncentracijos didėjimui vykdant kontroliuojamas chemines reakcijas. Noise is one of the most common adverse environmental factors. Military bases and airports and the areas surrounding them are affected by acoustic impact. The problem of military noise is researched in this article. Since 2004 Šiauliai Airport has been the site of NATO forces’ base in the Baltic States for the protection of the region's airspace. Military aircraft are used for the mission. The Kairiai military grounds on the Curonian Lagoon is the only site in Lithuania where all kinds of military forces may arrange their training. Measurement of the level of noise caused by Šiauliai Airport in residential and public areas of the surrounding areas and by the Kairiai military grounds was carried out using a Nor121 digital sound analyser. It was found that the maximum noise level (Lmax) in the surroundings of Šiauliai Airport sometimes exceeds the permissible maximum noise level specified in HN 33:2007. Exceeding of Lmaxon aircraft flights was short (up to 5 minutes). The calculated level of noise Ldenand Lnightat all points of measurement within the territories surrounding Šiauliai Airport does not exceed the limit values and causes no damage to the health of the population in Šiauliai. The noise generated by shooting at Kairiai military grounds causes no damage to the health of residents. Drinking water distribution system takes a significant place in sustainable urban development. In order to solve some environmental issues it is necessary to improve the maintenance of the environmental impact of chemical compounds which can come in contact with water. The aim of the research is to complete the analysis of the sustainable development of drinking water pipelines in Lithuania as well as to structure the chemical content of pipelines for further increase of supplied water quality and simplification of maintenance. Analytical and descriptive methods were used in the research process. The investigation included 150 samples that were obtained in different water stagnation times in lab-scaled pipelines. During the research the following indicators were set: total iron, manganese, ammonium ions, nitrate and nitrite concentrations, turbidity and chemical oxygen demand (CODCr). To ensure sustainability of drinking water distribution system in the end of this research the appliance of a certain model of actions was considered. This model says that material of potable water network must be chosen depending on water chemical indicators, water reaction with pipeline material and scale formation causes. Consequently, to reduce a negative effect of chemical processes on the drinking water supply measures of sustainable ecological development have to be taken. Article in English. Geriamojo vandens tiekimo sistemos darnaus vystymo vertinimas Santrauka.Geriamojo vandens tiekimo sistema yra labai svarbus darnios miesto plėtros objektas. Siekiant išspręsti tam tikras aplinkosaugos problemas, būtina padidinti cheminių junginių, kurie gali kontaktuoti su vandeniu, kontrolę, taip užtikrinant tinkamą poveikio aplinkai priežiūrą. Šio mokslinio tyrimo tikslas – atlikti geriamojo vandens vamzdyno Lietuvoje analizę darnaus vystymosi aspektu, struktūrizuoti cheminę vamzdynų sudėtį, siekiant pagerinti tiekiamo vandens kokybę ir supaprastinti tolesnę vandentiekio vamzdynų priežiūrą. Mokslinio darbo metu buvo taikomi analitiniai ir eksperimentiniai tyrimo metodai. Buvo ištirta 150 mėginių, paimtų iš laboratorijoje sukonstruoto vamzdyno. Mėginiai tirti atsižvelgiant į vandens išbuvimo vamzdyne trukmę. Tyrimo metu buvo nustatomi šie cheminiai indikatoriai: bendroji geležis, mangano koncentracija, amonio jonų kiekis, nitritų ir nitratų koncentracijos, drumstumas ir cheminis deguonies suvartojimas (ChDSCr). Siekiant užtikrinti geriamojo vandens tiekimo sistemos tvarumą, tyrimo pabaigoje buvo pasiūlytas tam tikras veiksmų modelis. Jis rodo, kad vandentiekio vamzdynų medžiaga turi būti parinkta pagal tiekiamo vandens cheminius indikatorius, vandens sąveikos su vamzdyno medžiaga ir nuosėdų formavimosi priežastis. Automobilių transporto sukeliama vandens telkinių tarša yra aktuali aplinkosaugos problema Lietuvoje. Siekiant ją išspręsti, vykdomi įvairūs moksliniai tyrimai ir eksperimentai, kuriais įvertinamas transporto intensyvumo šalia vandens telkinių esančiose gatvėse poveikis vandens kokybei bei dugno nuosėdų sankaupų susidarymui. Šiame straipsnyje, remiantis atliktais moksliniais tyrimais, analizuojama, kokį poveikį Šešupės upės atkarpai Marijampolėje turi dvi ją kertančios tarptautinės „Via Baltica“ magistralės atšakos. Tyrimų rezultatai rodo, kad miesto gatvėmis važiuojantis sunkusis transportas kelis kartus padidina teršalų kiekį gatvių lietaus nuoplovose. Tyrimų duomenimis, į Šešupę išleidžiamos gatvių lietaus nuotekos yra nepakankamai išvalomos, todėl kelia pavojų upės ekologinei būklei. Rekomenduojama lietingą rudenį riboti tranzitinio sunkiojo transporto eismą miestų gatvėmis nukreipiant jį aplinkkeliais ir taip mažinant gatvių teršalų patekimą į vandenį. Traditionally, we ideate that military activities and environmentalism are two antagonistic poles. At first sight it looks true.We really have a large number of samples to background this opinion. When the Soviet army left Lithuania in 1993, the inventory of environmental situation showed 2743 sources of actual pollution in the then military lands. Only 14% of all military bases did not contain pollution sources. These are large figures, and they show that in the Soviet period environmental approach was strange for army commanders. Therefore, the specific character of activity, a special status of the strong security on those sites and large territories, especially on military training grounds, supported the formation of specific seminatural and natural habitats with a large number of valuable biodiversity, which expanded to the surrounding regions. Of course, the present Lithuanian army is much more strictly controlled by government and public, therefore environmental problems are currently much more important than before. Certainly, some environmental incidents and problems exist till now, but as part of the NATO forces and of the European Union our military forces should implement all environmental requirements in their activities. Therefore each military base and especially military training grounds had to prepare the base management plan with a focus on environmental problems. This report is intended to present the strides and problems of the Lithuanian army in solving environmental conflicts., Lietuviška santrauka. Karinės mokomosios teritorijos patiria savitą antropogeninės veiklos presą. Tačiau kariniai poligonai yra labai vertingi gamtosaugos požiūriu, nes juose yra natūralių bei pusiau natūralių plotų, pasižyminčių didele biologine įvairove. Todėl jie turi svarbią mokslinę bei pilotinę taikomąją gamtosauginę vertę. Karinėms teritorijoms būdinga įvairiapusė karinė veikla (įvairios paskirties šaudyklos, taktinio mokymo laukai, apsauginės teritorijos ir pan.), kartu jos labai svarbios vertingų buveinių ar retųjų bei nykstančių rūšių išlikimui. Ūkinės veiklos ribojimas leidžia susiformuoti sąlyginai stabilioms ekosistemų sukcesijoms. Karinėse teritorijose susiduriama su dviem skirtingais požiūriais į biologinės įvairovės išsaugojimo problemas. Kariškiai prioritetus teikia įvairiapusei karinei mokomajai veiklai. Gamtosaugininkų nuomone, tuose karinių poligonų plotuose, kuriuose aptinkamos europinės svarbos buveinės bei retosios ir nykstančios rūšys, steigtinos griežtos apsaugos gamtosauginės teritorijos, visiškai eliminuojant karinę mokomąją veiklą. Svarbu vengti tarp kariškių ir gamtosaugininkų kylančių konfliktų, prioritetą teikiant optimaliam mokomosios karinės veiklos bei gamtosaugos problemų suderinimui.

Comparison of long-term environmental monitoring data show that in August and September 2002 heavy metal (Cu, Pb and Zn) concentrations increased in Lithuanian rivers. Resent investigation has indicated that increase of heavy metals (Cu, Pb and Zn) by 60–81 % in all the rivers that are subject to the State River Monitoring and could be correlative with land fires. Fires of forests and peat bogs have outspread all over Lithuania in the summer and the first half of autumn of 2002. This paper attempts to prove an assumption that these fires could have caused a significant increase of heavy metal concentrations in the water of Lithuanian rivers in August 2002. It also means that land fires should be evaluated as an environmental risk factor with a serious impact on the state of aquatic environment and must be taken into account in calculations of environmental damage. Aplinkos ministerijos Jungtinio tyrimų centro duomenimis, 2002 m. rugpjūčio ir rugsėjo mėnesių upių vandens kokybės rodiklius palyginus su 1991–2000 m. laikotarpio duomenimis, visų upių, kurių valstybinis monitoringas vykdomas, vandenyje nustatytas sunkiųjų metalų (vario, švino ir cinko) koncentracijų padidėjimas 60–81 %. Toks staigus pokytis verčia ieškoti šio reiškinio priežasčių, nes, padidėjus taršai, iš esmės keičiasi vandens telkinių tinkamumas žuvininkystei ir rekreacijai, kyla papildomas pavojus aplinkai ir žmonių sveikatai. 2002 m. liepos ir rugpjūčio mėnesiais dėl anomalios sausros Lietuvoje išplito miškų ir durpynų gaisrai. Straipsnyje bandoma pagrįsti prielaidą, kad 2002 m. rugpjūtį sunkiųjų metalų koncentracijų padidėjimui Lietuvos upių paviršiniame vandenyje įtakos galėjo turėti gaisrai, pasikeitęs paviršinių grunto sluoksnių pH ir dėl to išnykę gruntiniai geocheminiai barjerai. Dėl šių priežasčių iš dirvožemio į gruntinius vandenis bei iš upių dugno nuosėdų į paviršinius vandenis migravo sunkieji metalai, t. y. prasidėjo antrinė tarša.

In August and September 2002, concentrations of heavy metals (copper, lead, and zinc) were 21-74% more than in previous years in Lithuanian rivers. Such a sudden increase in heavy metal pollution reduces the value of any water body for fishing or recreation and poses a potential risk to the environment and to human health. Droughts in the summer of 2002 led to forest and peat bog fires all over Lithuania and may have caused the increase in concentrations of heavy metals detected in Lithuanian rivers in August 2002. The fires could have changed the pH in the top layers of the soil, overcome geochemical barriers in the soil and enabled heavy metals to migrate from the soil to the groundwater and from river bottom sediments to the surface water.
