Age-related changes in spinopelvic sagittal alignment have been recently reported; thus, sagittal realignment should consider age-related changes. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between age-specific sagittal spinopelvic radiographic parameters and low back pain (LBP) to support the establishment of age-specific realignment targets for patients with ASD.Materials and Methods: A population-based cohort consisting of 1461 subjects (466 men and 995 women) was used. The participants were divided into five groups based on their age: (1) younger than 50 years, (2) 50– 59 years, (3) 60– 69 years, (4) 70– 79 years, and (5) 80 years and older. Standing lateral whole-spine radiographs were assessed to measure lumbar lordosis (LL), pelvic tilt (PT), pelvic incidence (PI), and sagittal vertical axis (SVA). In addition, all participants were asked if they had LBP or not, using the following question: “Have you experienced LBP on most days during the past month and/or now?”.Results: The crucial parameter associated with LBP was the mismatch between PI and LL (PI-LL). The mean values of all the radiographic parameters increased with age. PI-LL and PT reached 11.5° and 25.6°, respectively, for women without LBP in the super-aged group (age > 80 years), which did not lie in the range of optimal values reported in the previous literature.Conclusion: A new optimal age-related target may be needed for the management of patients with ASD.Keywords: adult spinal deformity, spinopelvic sagittal alignment, low back pain, population-based cohort

Subcortical structures, which include the basal ganglia and parts of the limbic system, have key roles in learning, motor control and emotion, but also contribute to higher-order executive functions. Prior studies have reported volumetric alterations in subcortical regions in schizophrenia. Reported results have sometimes been heterogeneous, and few large-scale investigations have been conducted. Moreover, few large-scale studies have assessed asymmetries of subcortical volumes in schizophrenia. Here, as a work completely independent of a study performed by the ENIGMA consortium, we conducted a large-scale multisite study of subcortical volumetric differences between patients with schizophrenia and controls. We also explored the laterality of subcortical regions to identify characteristic similarities and differences between them. T1-weighted images from 1680 healthy individuals and 884 patients with schizophrenia, obtained with 15 imaging protocols at 11 sites, were processed with FreeSurfer. Group differences were calculated for each protocol and meta-analyzed. Compared with controls, patients with schizophrenia demonstrated smaller bilateral hippocampus, amygdala, thalamus and accumbens volumes as well as intracranial volume, but larger bilateral caudate, putamen, pallidum and lateral ventricle volumes. We replicated the rank order of effect sizes for subcortical volumetric changes in schizophrenia reported by the ENIGMA consortium. Further, we revealed leftward asymmetry for thalamus, lateral ventricle, caudate and putamen volumes, and rightward asymmetry for amygdala and hippocampal volumes in both controls and patients with schizophrenia. Also, we demonstrated a schizophrenia-specific leftward asymmetry for pallidum volume. These findings suggest the possibility of aberrant laterality in neural pathways and connectivity patterns related to the pallidum in schizophrenia.

After the occurrence of the 2011 magnitude 9 Tohoku earthquake, the seismicity in the overriding plate changed. The seismicity appears to form distinct belts. From the spatiotemporal distribution of hypocenters, we can quantify the evolution of seismicity after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. In some earthquake swarms near Sendai (Nagamachi-Rifu fault), Moriyoshi-zan volcano, Senya fault, and the Yamagata-Fukushima border (Aizu-Kitakata area, west of Azuma volcano), we can observe temporal expansion of the focal area. This temporal expansion is attributed to fluid diffusion. Observed diffusivity would correspond to the permeability of about 10−15 (m2). We can detect the area from which fluid migrates as a seismic low-velocity area. In the lower crust, we found seismic low-velocity areas, which appear to be elongated along N-S or NE-SW, the strike of the island arc. These seismic low-velocity areas are located not only beneath the volcanic front but also beneath the fore-arc region. Seismic activity in the upper crust tends to be high above these low-velocity areas in the lower crust. Most of the shallow earthquakes after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake are located above the seismic low-velocity areas. We thus suggest fluid pressure changes are responsible for the belts of seismicity. Background/Objective: We attempted to determine whether the pretreatment regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) might predict cognitive changes in response to donepezil treatment, as assessed in terms of the Alzheimer Disease Assessment Scale cognitive subscale (ADAS-cog), and in relation to the severity of subcortical hyperintensities (SH). Method: Forty-one patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) were treated with donepezil at baseline. All the patients underwent a single photon emission computed tomography examination before donepezil therapy. They also completed the ADAS-cog at baseline and after 24 weeks of donepezil therapy. SH were assessed semiquantitatively using a recently developed visual rating scale. We analyzed the correlation between the baseline rCBF and changes in the ADAS-cog score using statistical parametric mapping, including the severity of the SH as a covariate. Results: Lower pretreatment rCBF levels in the right orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) predicted a better improvement in the ADAS-cog score in response to donepezil therapy. The severity of SH did not appear to influence this correlation. Conclusions: This effect may reflect the choline acetyltransferase activity associated with the OFC. The presence of SH did not appear to influence the effect of donepezil therapy on the cognitive function as assessed by ADAS-cog. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and event-related potential (ERP) experiments were conducted in the same group of subjects and with an identical task paradigm to investigate a possible relationship between hemodynamic and electrophysiological responses within the brain. The subjects were instructed to judge whether visually presented stimuli were faces or houses and then press the corresponding button. Functional MRI identified face- and house-related regions in the lateral and medial part of the fusiform gyrus, respectively, while ERP showed significantly greater N170 negativity for face than for house stimuli in the temporo-occipital electrodes. Correlation analysis between the BOLD signal in the fusiform gyrus and ERP parameters demonstrated a close relationship between the signal and both latency and amplitude of N170 across the subjects. These correlations may indicate that the variation in cognitive demand and hemodynamic responses during the face/house discrimination task is coupled with the variation of N170 peak latency/amplitude across the subjects. Thus, integrative analysis of spatial and temporal information obtained from the two experimental modalities may help in studying neural correlates involved in a particular cognitive task. Unlabelled: BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Geriatric depression is often thought to differ from that at other times of adulthood. Recently, several studies have shown that the incidence of white matter hyperintense lesions identified by brain MRI is higher in patients with geriatric depression than in healthy elderly subjects, but a consensus has not yet been reached on the relationship between the severity of white matter lesions and either cognitive impairment or depressive symptoms.Method: Forty-seven patients aged 50 to 75 years with major depression were divided into two groups based on age at onset of depression: early-onset (< 50 years) group (20 patients; mean age, 62.7 +/- 6.7) and late-onset (> or =50 years) group (27 patients; mean age, 65.6 +/- 5.4). The severity of hyperintense white matter lesions on MRI was classified by region, then a proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS) focusing on the white matter of the frontal lobes, multidimensional neuropsychological tests and evaluation of depressive symptoms were conducted.Results: The severity of the deep white matter lesions, the deterioration of cognitive function related to subcortical/frontal brain system and clinician-rated depressive symptoms were all more pronounced in the late-onset group compared with those in the early-onset group. It was further observed that the more severe the deep white matter lesions, the lower the levels of N-acetylaspartate/creatine. With the age of onset as the covariate, the patients with moderate deep white matter lesions had more pronounced cognitive impairment and clinician-rated depressive symptoms than those with none and/or mild lesions.Conclusion: These results suggest that subcortical/frontal type cognitive impairment and the persistence of depressive symptoms in geriatric depression is related to moderate deep white matter lesions more often complicated in the late-onset group. Background: Schizophrenia is a relatively common disorder, with a lifetime prevalence of about 1%. Family history is the most important risk factor for schizophrenia, consistent with a genetic contribution to its etiology. Recent human genetic studies reported that some common variants located within BCL9 are associated with schizophrenia in the Chinese population, but not associated with bipolar disorder in the Caucasian population. Methods: Single nucleotide variant (SNP) prioritization sample was comprised of 575 patients with schizophrenia and 564 healthy controls with no personal or family history of psychiatric illness. For SNP association analysis, we used an independent Japanese sample set (replication sample) comprising 1464 cases and 1171 controls. For the analysis of cognitive performance, we investigated 115 cases and 87 controls using Continuous Performance Test (CPT-IP) and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test Keio version (WCST). Meta-analysis was performed using a combined Japanese total sample (N=3735) and a Chinese sample from a previous study. Results: In the replication sample set, we did not detect any association in 2 SNPs (rs672607 and rs10494252) and schizophrenia. Investigating vertebral fractures and brain structure, we found significant gray matter volume reductions in the right hippocampus, amygdala, and parahippocampal gyrus, especially in males. These findings emphasize the importance of integrating skeletal and neural health in osteoporosis management., Purpose: Vertebral fractures (VF) due to osteoporosis impact morbidity and quality of life in the elderly. The relationship between VF and changes in brain structure remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the association between VF and gray matter volume (GMV) reductions in specific brain regions and to explore potential sex differences., Methods: Data from 1,751 participants (571 males, 1,180 females; mean age 64.9, range 18-97) in the fourth survey of the population-based Research on Osteoarthritis/Osteoporosis Against Disability study (2015-2016) were used. Participants were classified into those with and without VF (VF + and VF - groups) based on Genant's semiquantitative method, assessed by spine radiographs. Voxel-based morphometry was applied to MRI images to measure GMV, and a general linear model analysis was performed to compare GMV between groups, adjusting for age, sex, total brain volume, and Mini-Mental State Examination scores as covariates. Additionally, a two-way analysis of variance was conducted on the significant GMV cluster, with sex and VF presence as independent variables, to explore interaction effects., Results: The VF+ group consisted of 113 participants, while the VF- group included 1,638 participants. The analysis identified a significant cluster with reduced GMV in the VF + group compared to the VF - group. This cluster included the right hippocampus, right amygdala, and right parahippocampal gyrus. Further analysis revealed that males in the VF + group exhibited more pronounced GMV reductions in the significant cluster compared to females., Conclusion: These findings suggest that VF is associated with significant reductions in brain regions critical for memory, emotional processing, and visuospatial memory, with more severe effects observed in males., Competing Interests: Declarations.
