Abstract

Journal ref.: J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 25, 065602 (2013): We investigated the optical reflectivity of the heavy-fermion metal CeCu2Si2 in the energy range 3 meV - 30 eV for temperatures between 4K - 300K. The results for the charge dynamics indicate a behavior that is expected for the formation of a coherent heavy quasiparticle state: Upon cooling the spectra of the optical conductivity indicate a narrowing of the coherent response. Below temperatures of 30 K a considerable suppression of conductivity evolves below a peak structure at 13 meV. We assign this gap-like feature to strong electron correlations due to the 4f-conduction electron hybridization., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Kondo insulators and in particular their non-cubic representatives have remained poorly understood. Here we report on the development of an anisotropic energy pseudogap in the tetragonal compound CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$ employing optical reflectivity measurements in broad frequency and temperature ranges, and local density approximation plus dynamical mean field theory calculations. The calculations provide evidence for a Kondo insulator-like response within the $a-a$ plane and a more metallic response along the c axis and qualitatively reproduce the experimental observations, helping to identify their origin.

Abstract

We have investigated the optical conductivity of the prominent valence fluctuating compounds EuIr2Si2 and EuNi2P2 in the infrared energy range to get new insights into the electronic properties of valence fluctuating systems. For both compounds we observe upon cooling the formation of a renormalized Drude response, a partial suppression of the optical conductivity below 100 meV and the appearance of a mid-infrared peak at 0.15 eV for EuIr2Si2 and at 0.13 eV for EuNi2P2. Most remarkably, our results show a strong similarity with the optical spectra reported for many Ce- or Yb-based heavy fermion metals and intermediate valence systems, although the phase diagrams and the temperature dependence of the valence differ strongly between Eu- and Ce-/Yb-systems. This suggests that the hybridization between 4f- and conduction electrons, which is responsible for the properties of Ce- and Yb-systems, plays an important role in valence fluctuating Eu-systems.

Abstract

We report the temperature- and magnetic-field-dependent optical conductivity spectra of the heavy electron metal YbIr$_2$Si$_2$. Upon cooling below the Kondo temperature ($T_{\rm K}$), we observed a typical charge dynamics that is expected for a formation of a coherent heavy quasiparticle state. We obtained a good fitting of the Drude weight of the heavy quasiparticles by applying a modified Drude formula with a photon energy dependence of the quasiparticle scattering rate that shows a similar power-law behavior as the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity. By applying a magnetic field of 6T below $T_{\rm K}$, we found a weakening of the effective dynamical mass enhancement by about 12% in agreement with the expected decrease of the $4f$-conduction electron hybridization on magnetic field., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. to be published in Journal of the Physical Society of Japan Vol. 79 (2010) No. 12

Abstract

We report the anisotropic changes in the electronic structure of a Kondo semiconductor CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$ across an anomalous antiferromagnetic ordering temperature ($T_0$) of 29 K, using optical conductivity spectra. The spectra along the $a$- and $c$-axes indicate that a $c$-$f$ hybridization gap emerges from a higher temperature continuously across $T_0$. Along the b-axis, on the other hand, a different energy gap with a peak at 20 meV appears below 39 K, which is higher temperature than $T_0$, because of structural distortion. The onset of the energy gap becomes visible below $T_0$. Our observation reveals that the electronic structure as well as the energy gap opening along the b-axis due to the structural distortion induces antiferromagnetic ordering below $T_0$., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We report the pressure-dependent optical reflectivity spectra of a strongly correlated insulator, samarium monosulfide (SmS), in the far- and middle-infrared regions to investigate the origin of the pressure-induced phase transition from the black phase to the golden phase. The energy gap becomes narrow with increasing pressure in the black phase. A valence transition from Sm2+ in the black phase to mainly Sm3+ in the golden phase accompanied by spectral change from insulator to metal were observed at the transition pressure of 0.65 GPa. The black-to-golden phase transition occurs when the energy gap size of black SmS becomes the same as the binding energy of the exciton at the indirect energy gap before the gap closes. We have observed the spatial inhomogeneity of the electronic structure of a single-crystalline electron-doped EuO thin film with ferromagnetic ordering by employing infrared magneto-optical imaging with synchrotron radiation. The uniform paramagnetic electronic structure changes to a uniform ferromagnetic structure via an inhomogeneous state with decreasing temperature and increasing magnetic field slightly above the ordering temperature. We aimed to determine the incidence of coronary artery stenosis (CAS) in asymptomatic FH patients using coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). To investigate the association between CAS and atherosclerosis of carotid arteries, we performed ultrasonography to measure the mean intima-media thickness (IMT), maximum IMT, and plaque score. We also aimed to examine the significance of the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) and its association with the incidence of CAS in asymptomatic FH patients. Patients and methods: We enrolled consecutively, 31 FH patients without symptoms of coronary artery disease. Based on the CCTA findings, we divided the patients into two groups, those with and without CAS, and compared various parameters and risk factors of the two groups. Results: Of 31 FH patients, seven patients (22.6%) had CAS. The proportion of male patients and mean low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol level were higher in patients with CAS than in those without CAS (P22.6% of the asymptomatic FH patients. Patients with CAS tended to have enhanced levels of carotid plaque markers, but no increase was noted in CAVI. FH patients should be continuously monitored using CCTA and ultrasonography. Abstract

We have investigated the electronic structure of a potential thermoelectric material, higher manganese silicide, and its solid solutions with supersaturated Re by means of hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The unusual Re substitution dependence of thermoelectric properties in the higher manganese silicide, reducing the electrical resistivity without altering the Seebeck coefficient, can be explained in terms of the variation of the density of states at the Fermi level and its energy derivative. Such an electronic structure variation contributes to an improvement in the thermoelectric performance in combination with the suppressed thermal conductivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

CO CV CM CI Ryugu A Ryugu C 0.0 0.5 1.0 1.5 44/40CaSRM915a (age corrected) The Hayabusa2 spacecraft has returned samples from the Cb-type asteroid (162173) Ryugu to Earth. Previous petrological and chemical analyses support a close link between Ryugu and CI chondrites that are presumed to be chemically the most primitive meteorites with a solar-like composition. However, Ryugu samples are highly enriched in Ca compared to typical CI chondrites. To identify the cause of this discrepancy, here we report stable Ca isotopic data (expressed as delta 44/40CaSRM915a) for returned Ryugu samples collected from two sites. We found that samples from both sites have similar delta 44/40CaSRM915a (0.58 +/- 0.03 parts per thousand and 0.55 +/- 0.08 parts per thousand, 2 s.d.) that fall within the range defined by CIs. This isotopic similarity suggests that the Ca budget of CIs and Ryugu samples is dominated by carbonates, and the variably higher Ca contents in Ryugu samples are due to the abundant carbonates. Precipitation of carbonates on Ryugu likely coincided with a major episode of aqueous activity dated to have occurred similar to 5 Myr after Solar System formation. Based on the pristine Ryugu samples, the average delta 44/40CaSRM915a of the Solar System is defined to be 0.57 +/- 0.04 parts per thousand (2 s.d.).

Abstract

Songbirds use auditory feedback to maintain their own songs. Juveniles also memorize a tutor song and use memory as a template to make up their own songs through auditory feedback. A recent electrophysiological study revealed that HVC neurons respond to BOS playback only in low arousal, sleeping, or anesthetized conditions. One outstanding question is how does auditory suppression occur in the brain? Here, we determined how arousal affects auditory responses simultaneously in the whole brain and over the song neural circuit in Bengalese finches, using the immediate early gene egr-1 as a marker of neural activity. Our results showed that auditory responses in the low-arousal state were less susceptible to gating, which was also confirmed by gene expression, and that the suppression may be weaker than observed in previous zebra finch studies. This may be because the Bengalese finch is a domesticated species. In addition, our results suggest that information may flow from the MLd.I of the midbrain to higher auditory regions. Altogether, this study presents a new attempt to explore the auditory suppression network by simultaneously investigating the whole brain using molecular biology methods.
