Superconducting circuits provide a versatile and controllable platform for studies of fundamental quantum phenomena as well as for quantum technology applications. A conventional technique to read out the state of a quantum circuit or to characterize its properties is based on RF measurement schemes. Here we demonstrate a simple DC measurement of a thermal spectrometer to investigate properties of a superconducting circuit, in this proof-of-concept experiment a coplanar waveguide resonator. A fraction of the microwave photons in the resonator is absorbed by an on-chip bolometer, resulting in a measurable temperature rise. By monitoring the DC signal of the thermometer due to this process, we are able to determine the resonance frequency and the lineshape (quality factor) of the resonator. The demonstrated scheme, which is a simple DC measurement, offers a wide frequency band potentially reaching up to 200 GHz, far exceeding that of the typical RF spectrometer. Moreover, the thermal measurement yields a highly frequency independent reference level of the Lorentzian absorption signal. In the low power regime, the measurement is fully calibration-free. While Wi-Fi positioning is still more common indoors, using magnetic field features has become widely known and utilized as an alternative or supporting source of information. Magnetometer bias presents significant challenge in magnetic field navigation and SLAM. Traditionally, magnetometers have been calibrated using standard sphere or ellipsoid fitting methods and by requiring manual user procedures, such as rotating a smartphone in a figure-eight shape. This is not always feasible, particularly when the magnetometer is attached to heavy or fast-moving platforms, or when user behavior cannot be reliably controlled. Recent research has proposed using map data for calibration during positioning. This paper takes a step further and verifies that a pre-collected map is not needed; instead, calibration can be done as part of a SLAM process. The presented solution uses a factorized particle filter that factors out calibration in addition to the magnetic field map. The method is validated using smartphone data from a shopping mall and mobile robotics data from an office environment. Results support the claim that magnetometer calibration can be achieved during SLAM with comparable accuracy to manual calibration. Quantum computing has tremendous potential to overcome some of the fundamental limitations present in classical information processing. Yet, today's technological limitations in the quality and scaling prevent exploiting its full potential. Quantum computing based on superconducting quantum processing units (QPUs) is among the most promising approaches towards practical quantum advantage. In this article the basic technological approach of IQM Quantum Computers is described covering both the QPU and the rest of the full-stack quantum computer. In particular, the focus is on a 20-qubit quantum computer featuring the Garnet QPU and its architecture, which we will scale up to 150 qubits. We also present QPU and system-level benchmarks, including a median 2-qubit gate fidelity of 99.5% and genuinely entangling all 20 qubits in a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state.

Cobalt disilicide provides a promising nearly-epitaxial superconducting material on silicon, which is compatible with high-density integrated circuit technology. We have characterized CoSi$_{2}$ superconducting microwave cavities around 5.5 GHz for resonance frequency fluctuations at temperatures 10 - 200 mK. We found relatively weak fluctuations $(\delta f/f)^2$ following the spectral density $A/f^{\gamma} $, with $A \simeq 6 \times 10^{-16}$ and $\gamma$ slightly below 1 at an average number of photons of $10^4$; the noise decreased with measurement power as $1/P^{1/2}$. We identify the noise as arising from kinetic inductance fluctuations and discuss possible origins of such fluctuations., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

The observation of the gate-controlled supercurrent (GCS) effect in superconducting nanostructures increased the hopes for realizing a superconducting equivalent of semiconductor field-effect transistors. However, recent works attribute this effect to various leakage-based scenarios, giving rise to a debate on its origin. A proper understanding of the microscopic process underlying the GCS effect and the relevant time scales would be beneficial to evaluate the possible applications. In this work, we observed gate-induced two-level fluctuations between the superconducting state and normal state in Al/InAs nanowires (NWs). Noise correlation measurements show a strong correlation with leakage current fluctuations. The time-domain measurements show that these fluctuations have Poissonian statistics. Our detailed analysis of the leakage current measurements reveals that it is consistent with the stress-induced leakage current (SILC), in which inelastic tunneling with phonon generation is the predominant transport mechanism. Our findings shed light on the microscopic origin of the GCS effect and give deeper insight into the switching dynamics of the superconducting NW under the influence of the strong gate voltage.

We have looked into cobalt disilicide (CoSi$_2$) as a potential building block for superconducting quantum circuits. In order to achieve this, we annealed a thin layer of Co to create 10-105 nm thick microwave cavities from CoSi$_2$ embedded in the silicon substrate. The cavity properties were measured as a function of temperature and power. In films measuring 10 and 25 nm, we find a significant kinetic inductance $L_\mathrm{K}$ with a non-BCS power-law variation $\delta L_\mathrm{K} \propto T^{4.3 \pm 0.2}$ at low temperatures. The quality factor of the studied microwave resonances increased almost linearly with thickness, with two-level systems having very little effect. The power dependence of kinetic inductance was analyzed in terms of heat flow due to electron-phonon coupling, which was found stronger than estimated for heat relaxation by regular quasiparticles., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We demonstrate a direct writing method for the fabrication of planar Josephson junctions from high quality superconducting niobium titanium nitride (NbTiN) thin films, by creating local disorder using focused He-ion beam irradiation in a helium ion microscope. We show that we can control the suppression of superconductivity in NbTiN as a function of the helium ion beam fluence, enabling us to successfully fabricate Josephson junctions with highly tunable weak links ranging from metallic to insulating phase, due to the continuous nature of the disorder-induced superconductor-insulator transition. We demonstrate the successful fabrication of both SNS and SIS type of devices, and show that we can achieve exceptionally wide range ($\sim$5 orders of magnitude) of critical current densities and junction resistances. The SNS type junctions follow closely the ideal resistively and capacitively shunted junction behavior, have high characteristic voltages up to $\sim$ 1.5\,mV and show Shapiro steps up to very high orders, while the SIS junctions also follow established theories well. The results suggest that junctions fabricated with this method from NbTiN are suitable for a wide range of applications in superconducting electronics because of the excellent mechanical, electrical and microwave properties of NbTiN. In contradictin to the common concept that acoustic phonons can only travel inside a material medium, they can in fact "tunnel" across a vacuum gap with the help of piezoelectricity, transmitting a significantly stronger heat flux than that of blackbody radiation. Here, we present a theoretical formulation for the heat flux of such piezoelectrically mediated heat transfer, applicable to any anisotropic piezoelectric crystals with an arbitrary orientation. A few numerical results are demonstrated and compared to heat transfer driven by other close-range mechanisms, including near-field radiative heat transfer and other acoustic phonon tunneling mechanisms. We find that piezoelectrically mediated heat transfer has a significant effect when the vacuum gap size is smaller than the phonon characteristic thermal wavelength, and its heat flux can dominate heat transfer between piezoelectric solids over all other known heat transfer mechanisms at temperatures below 50 K.

We review the use of hybrid thin films composed of superconductors and ferromagnets for creating non-reciprocal electronic components and self-biased detectors of electromagnetic radiation. We begin by introducing the theory behind these effects, as well as discussing various potential materials that can be used in the fabrication of these components. We then proceed with a detailed discussion on the fabrication and characterization of Al/EuS/Cu and EuS/Al/Co-based detectors, along with their noise analysis.
