Variance components and genetic parameter were estimated for piglet growth traits of Large White (LW) pigs managed under intensive production systems in Kenya. Data were on piglet performance of LW pigs born between 1982 to 1996. Growth performance traits of the piglets that were considered, were body weight (BW, in kg) at birth (BW0), three weeks (BW3), eight weeks at weaning (BW8), 12 weeks ( BW12), 24 weeks (BW24) and 36 weeks (BW36); and average daily gain (g/day) from birth to eight weeks (DG0-8) and from weaning to 24 weeks (DG8-24). Variance components and genetic parameters were estimated using univariate and multivariate animal models. Direct heritability estimates from univariate analyses were 0.38, 0.24, 0.47, 0.39, 0.36 and 0.26 for BW0, BW3, BW8, BW12, BW24 and BW36, respectively. Maternal heritabilities were 0.42, 0.25 0.15 and 0.18 for BW0, BW3, BW8 and DG0-8, respectively. Genetic correlations among growth traits were positive and ranged from 0.45 to 0.98 while phenotypic correlations ranged from 0.54 to 0.95. Early piglet growth was highly heritable and under the influence of maternal effects. Selection programmes for genetic improvement of early growth performance should be based on models that account for direct and maternal genetic and litter effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to evaluate milk production and reproductive performance of Sahiwal cattle in semi-arid Kenya. Milk production traits considered were lactation milk yield, lactation length and test-day milk yield, while reproductive traits included age at first calving, calving interval and number of services per conception. Various fixed effects affected performance of milk production and reproductive traits to varying significance levels. The mean estimates for milk production traits were 1368 kg, 282 days and 4.9 kg for lactation milk yield, lactation length and test-day milk yield, respectively. For reproductive traits, mean estimates were 468 days, 2.2 and 1345 days for calving interval, number of services per conception and age at first calving, respectively. There was a decline in lactation milk yield and lactation length, and an increase in calving interval and age at first calving over the years. Satisfactory management and appropriate genetic improvement strategies would result in improved performance. Implications of the results for genetic improvement of the breed in Kenya are discussed. Milk yield data (n = 12307) from 116 Holstein-Friesian herds were grouped into three production environments based on mean and standard deviation of herd 305-day milk yield and evaluated for within herd variation using univariate animal model procedures. Variance components were estimated by derivative free REML algorithm, and significance tests done using the Fmax procedure. Phenotypic, additive genetic and residual variances were heterogeneous across production environments. The estimates of variances in kg² were 708349.9, 966853.7 and 2229338.9; 112266.9, 209949.9 and 689942.1; and 512660.0, 734854.5 and 1317808.3 for phenotypic, additive genetic and residual variances, respectively for production environments 1, 2 and 3. The heritability estimates were 0.15 ± 0.04, 0.22 ± 0.05 and 0.31 ± 0.03, respectively. The magnitude of estimated breeding values for sires and their ranking was influenced by production environment. Each production environment had a unique set of superior sires. The more variable production environments contributed more bull-dams at various selection intensities. Genetic parameters were estimated for weaning weight (WW) in Kenya Boran cattle using animal models that assumed non-zero direct-maternal genetic covariance. In addition to the direct and maternal genetic effects, maternal permanent environmental and sire by herd-year interaction effects were tested. Two datasets were used. Dataset 1 (DS1) included all animals while dataset 2 (DS2) constituted only records of animals with known paternity. Estimates of direct and maternal heritabilities from DS1 ranged from 0.61 to 0.64 and 0.25 to 0.27, respectively. Estimates of direct and maternal heritabilities from DS2 ranged from 0.07 to 0.31 and 0.16 to 0.23. Direct-maternal genetic correlations were large and negative but were lower in the analyses of DS2 than in DS1. Similarly, estimates of direct and maternal heritability were lower in the analyses of DS2 than in DS1 especially when the effect of sire by herd-year effect was fitted in the model. This study shows that WW is highly heritable and under the influence of maternal effects. The current study aimed at development of breeding objectives and estimation of the economic values for traits of economic importance to various dairy goat breeders associations. This was achieved through the development of a bio-economic model to derive economic values for the selected traits. The input and output parameters used represented the average performance of Saanen, Toggenburg and Alpine breeds. The gross margin was estimated using the R software. Economic values for milk yield (MY, kg), pre-weaning survival rate (PrSr, %), post-weaning survival rate, (PoSR, %), doe survival rate, (DoSR, %), and kidding rate, (Kr, %) were estimated based on fixed flock size and fixed feed resources scenarios. The findings indicate varied gross margin across the breeds; Saanen (US$ 116.17), Toggenburg (US$ 68.21) and Alpine (US$ -1.11). In both scenarios, the economic values in selected traits were positive for the three breeds except for milk yield in Alpine, which was negative in both fixed flock and fixed feed resources. The positive economic values of selected traits indicated a unit increase in genetic merit of these traits. The developed bio-economic model was able to estimate the gross margin of Saanen, Toggenburg and Alpine breeds represented by Nyanza Dairy Goat Breeders Association (NDGA), Meru Dairy Goat Breeders Association (MDGA) and Dairy Goat Association of Kenya (DGAK), respectively, reared under semi-intensive production system. Sahiwal cattle breed is an important genetic resource that supports livelihoods of pastoralists in Kenya. However, information about its population structure, demographic trends, and genetic diversity is scarce. The objective of this study was to characterize the population structure, explore demographic trends, and evaluate genetic diversity parameters of the breed through pedigree analysis. Pedigree data from National Sahiwal Stud and Kenya Stud Book were combined and analyzed using POPREP software package. The number of registered breeding animals indicated a downward trend over time. Generation interval was longer by 3 years in males than in females. Average inbreeding coefficient was 0.58 % for all animals and 2.23 % for inbred animals. Average inbreeding between 1960 and 2008 for inbred animals decreased at -0.0012 % per year while for the entire breed increased at 0.025 % per year. Additive genetic relationship in the whole population was 0.87 %. The effective population size declined over time and was lower than that recommended to maintain genetic diversity in the long term. The breed was found to be losing genetic diversity over time, and therefore a strategy to reduce inbreeding rate and increase effective population size is recommended.

A total of 19 376 test day (TD) milk yield records from the first three lactations of 1618 cows daughters of 162 sires were used to estimate genetic and phenotypic parameters and determine the relationship between daily milk yield and lactation milk yield in the Sahiwal cattle in Kenya. Variance components were estimated using animal models based on a derivative free restricted maximum likelihood procedure. Variance components were estimated using various univariate and multi-trait fixed regression test day models (TDM) that defined contemporary groups either based on the year-season of calving (YSCV) or on the year-season of TD milk sampling (YSTD). Variance components were influenced by CG which resulted in differences in heritability and repeatability estimates between TDM. Models considering YSTD resulted in higher additive genetic variances and lower residual variances compared with models in which YSCV was considered. Heritability estimates for daily yield ranged from 0.28 to 0.46, 0.38 to 0.52 and 0.33 to 0.52 in the first, second and third lactation, respectively. In the first and second lactation, the heritability estimates were highest between TD 2 and TD 4. Genetic correlations among daily milk yields ranged from 0.41 to 0.93, 0.50 to 0.83 and 0.43 to 86 in the first, second and third lactation, respectively. The phenotypic correlations were correspondingly lower. Genetic correlations were different from unit when fitting multi-trait TDM. Therefore, a multiple trait model would be more ideal in determining the genetic merit of dairy sires and bulls based on daily yield records. Genetic and phenotypic correlations between daily yield and lactation yields were high and positive. Genetic correlations ranged from 0.84 to 0.99, 0.94 to 1.00 and 0.94 to 0.97 in the first, second and third lactations, respectively. The corresponding phenotypic correlation estimates ranged from 0.50 to 0.85, 0.50 to 0.83 and 0.53 to 0.87. The high genetic correlation between daily yield and lactation yield imply that both traits are influenced by similar genes. Therefore daily yields records could be used in genetic evaluation in the Sahiwal cattle breeding programme.
