The cultural events, especially traditional festivals, are an area of interest to many researchers. They are a vehicle to express the relationship between identity and place. In many countries and regions there is a multiplication of cultural events to persuade visitors or tourists. They create opportunities for travel, increase the demand and promote the development of tourism. This paper analyzes the dimensions of experience that tourists acquired in the Festivity of End-of-Year at Madeira Island. To achieve the objective we applied a survey to tourists, and used as a theoretical model the ‘experience economy’ of Pine and Gilmore (1999). The results showed that most tourists obtained a passive participation between the dimension of experience 'entertainment' and 'aesthetic'., Las manifestaciones culturales, especialmente las fiestas tradicionales, son objeto de interés para muchos investigadores. Son un vehículo para expresar la estrecha relación que existe entre identidad y lugar. En muchos países y regiones se multiplican cada vez más los actos culturales de diversa índole para atraer a visitantes o turistas. Crean oportunidades para viajar, aumentan el consumo y promueven el desarrollo del turismo. El presente artículo pretende analizar las dimensiones de la experiencia que los turistas adquirieron en el Festival de Nochevieja de la isla de Madeira. Para alcanzar el objetivo se aplicó una encuesta por cuestionario a los turistas que asistieron al evento y se utilizó la "economía de la experiencia" de Pine y Gilmore (1999) como modelo teórico. Los resultados mostraron que los turistas encuestados adquirieron, en su mayoría, una participación pasiva entre la dimensión de experiencia 'entretenimiento' y 'estética'., Os eventos culturais, especialmente os festivais tradicionais, constituem uma área de interesse para muitos investigadores. Eles são um veículo para expressar a relação próxima que existe entre identidade e lugar. Em muitos países e regiões assiste-se, cada vez mais, à multiplicação de diversos eventos culturais para seduzir visitantes ou turistas. Eles criam oportunidades para a viagem, aumentam o consumo e promovem o desenvolvimento do turismo. O presente artigo pretende analisar as dimensões da experiência que os turistas adquiriram na Festa do Fim-de-Ano na Ilha da Madeira. Para atingir o objetivo aplicou-se um inquérito por questionário aos turistas que foram ao evento e utilizou-se como modelo teórico a ‘economia da experiência’ de Pine e Gilmore (1999). Os resultados mostraram que os turistas inquiridos adquiriram, na sua maioria, uma participação passiva entre a dimensão da experiência ‘entretenimento’ e ‘estética’.

The evolution of the internet and transportation created such a globalized world that nowadays we have fast and constant access to goods and services originally from other countries. Not only has the daily life of the population changed, but the way businesses are run had to go through a process of renovations to survive all the new involvements of the international market. No matter how small the local market is, every company has the possibility to sell abroad and increase its profit. This investigation focused on a specific market that, besides its size, the characteristic of insularity makes it a peculiar although interesting place to study. It is the market of international companies in Madeira Island, most specifically, the process that companies originally from Madeira had to go through when going international. Aiming to understand the impact of the insularity aspect and if there was any specific feature for these companies, interviews were conducted so, successful cases, could describe their experience and expose their evolutionary path until the acknowledgment that they have today as impactful players in the international market. Overall, as these companies found some constraints during their international expansion, they also found aid from the government and were able to become as important as many companies from bigger markets. The eagerness to expand can enable any company from the island to give this step, they just need to do their research work and keep fighting for European funds that can help overpass the natural borders of the sea. A evolução da Internet e dos meios de transporte criou um mundo de tal forma globalizado que atualmente temos acesso rápido e constante a bens e serviços provenientes de outros países. Não só a vida quotidiana da população mudou, mas a forma como as empresas são geridas passou por um processo de renovação para sobreviver à evolução do mercado internacional. Não importa quão pequeno seja o mercado local, cada empresa tem a possibilidade de vender no estrangeiro e aumentar os seus lucros. Esta pesquisa centrou-se num mercado específico que, para além da sua dimensão, a característica da insularidade torna-o peculiar, embora interessante, de estudar. É o mercado das empresas internacionais na Ilha da Madeira, mais especificamente, o processo pelo qual as empresas originariamente madeirenses tiveram de passar quando se internacionalizaram. Com o objetivo de compreender o impacto da insularidade ou de alguma característica específica para estas empresas, foram realizadas entrevistas para que, casos de sucesso, pudessem descrever a sua experiência e expor o seu percurso evolutivo até ao reconhecimento de que têm hoje como atores de impacto no mercado internacional. Em geral, como estas empresas encontraram algumas limitações durante a sua expansão internacional, também encontraram ajuda do governo e puderam tornar-se tão importantes como muitas empresas de mercados maiores. A ânsia de expansão pode permitir a qualquer empresa da ilha dar este passo, só precisam de fazer o seu trabalho de investigação e continuar a lutar por fundos europeus que possam ajudar a ultrapassar as fronteiras naturais do mar.

Mestrado Bolonha em Marketing O propósito da presente dissertação consiste em compreender a razão pela qual os turistas regressam, diversas vezes, ao mesmo destino turístico, neste caso à Ilha da Madeira. Mais precisamente, procura estudar os fatores que levam o consumidor a revisitar a Ilha da Madeira e ainda o papel da imagem do destino, satisfação turística e apego ao destino no desenvolvimento de intenções comportamentais, ou seja, na lealdade ao destino. Com recurso a um estudo qualitativo mono-método, a investigação de natureza exploratória e de raciocínio abdutivo decorreu num horizonte temporal cross-sectional, sendo conduzida com base no interpretativismo. Assim, ao utilizar uma amostra não-probabilística, por conveniência e criteriosa, foram realizadas 16 entrevistas semiestruturas a indivíduos de diversas nacionalidades que visitaram a Ilha da Madeira no mínimo duas vezes. Consecutivamente, os resultados obtidos a partir da análise de conteúdo com base no software MAXQDA permitiram concluir que a hospitalidade da comunidade local e a familiaridade são as principais razões pela qual o consumidor revisita diversas vezes a Ilha da Madeira. Adicionalmente, ao explorar o papel entre a imagem do destino, satisfação turística e apego ao destino e a sua contribuição para a lealdade ao destino, verifica-se uma associação positiva com a intenção de repetir a visita. Além disso, a marca de destino Madeira é considerada um sucesso devido ao carinho que dá aos seus visitantes e por nunca ter perdido a sua essência e consistência. Em suma, o estudo apresenta uma contribuição académica por aumentar o conhecimento sobre a lealdade ao destino e o seu papel na intenção de revistar um destino. Igualmente, contribui para a pouca literatura académica existente sobre a revisita a destinos turísticos, no contexto da COVID-19. A nível empresarial auxilia os gestores de destinos e profissionais de marketing no desenvolvimento de estratégias e no aperfeiçoamento das suas relações com turistas. The purpose of this dissertation is to understand why tourists return, several times, to the same tourist destination, in this case to Madeira Island. More precisely, it seeks to study the factors that lead consumers to revisit Madeira Island. Also, the study examines the role of destination image, tourist satisfaction, and destination attachment in the development of behavioral intentions, i.e., destination loyalty. Using a single-method qualitative study, the research of exploratory nature and abductive reasoning took place in a cross-sectional time frame and was conducted based on interpretivism. Thus, by using a non-probabilistic sample, by convenience and criterion, 16 semi-structured interviews were carried out with individuals of various nationalities who visited Madeira Island at least twice. The results obtained from the content analysis are based on the MAXQDA software allowed us to conclude that the hospitality of the local community and familiarity are the main reasons why the consumer revisits Madeira Island several times. Additionally, by exploring the role between the concepts and their contribution to destination loyalty, a positive association to repeating the visit is found. In addition, the Madeira destination brand is considered a success because of the cart it gives to its visitors and because it has never lost its essence and consistency. In sum, the study presents an academic contribution by increasing knowledge about destination loyalty and its role in the intention to revisit a destination. Likewise, it contributes to the little existing academic literature on reviewing tourist destinations in the context of COVID-19. Musschia aurea (Linnaeus f.) Dumortier, Madeira giant bellflower, is a plant species endemic to the Madeira Archipelago, first discovered and described in the late 18th century. As part of a broader investigation on the evolution of the knowledge of Madeira’s plants up to the 19th century, research was conducted to locate references and illustrations of Musschia aurea produced or published during the 18th and 19th centuries. We were able to retrieve 15 illustrations depicting the whole plant or details of it, comprising 3 original paintings and 12 printed illustrations, as well as several references in books about botany and gardening and catalogues of several of Europe’s leading botanic gardens. The presence of Musschia aurea in historical records touches critical moments in the history of botany and taxonomy; in the history of botanical illustration, having been depicted by famous illustrators, such as Pierre-Joseph Redouté, Sydenham Edwards and James de Carle Sowerby; and in the history of gardening and horticulture. Although the plant rapidly spread through the gardens of the European aristocracy and ruling families at the turn of the 18th century, its presence in nurseries was scarce, and there is no evidence that the Madeira giant bellflower became popular as an ornamental plant. This article intends to demonstrate the importance of the existence of an aggregating platform for digital content, as is the case of MUVITUR – Virtual Museum of Tourism, for the research in tourism and also to assess its potential. Aiming to track the history of Madeira’s destination image, this paper also searches to contribute to the study of the ‘Atlantic Pearl’ distinctive features for promotional purposes throughout seventy years. For this purpose, the authors did an integrated search aiming to find and study the retrieved results of promotional visual materials edited during the twentieth century, focusing on Madeira Island, as an example of the potentialities of the Muvitur database. With this research, we can conclude that tourism marketing strategies seem to have succeeded to consolidate Madeira’s destination image focused on its distinctiveness. Digital objects gathered in such searchable thematic databases, with a diversity of content providers, can play a crucial role in the history of tourism and leisure, allowing us, at the same time, to know how Madeira represented the destination for promotional aims.

In the investigations carried out in the periodicals of the first half of the twentieth century, it became clear that one of the repertoires frequently performed in Madeira Island was the Theatrical revue. This is an area that has not yet been studied, but it seems to be possible to argue that, between 1909, the year in which the first theater of the Madeiran authors’ theatrical revue was known, and the beginning of the 1960s, dozens of original theatrical revues were produced in Funchal. This study intends to divulge a collection that is thought to be unpub‑ lished about the dynamization of theatrical revues in Madeira. THEATRICAL REVUE / MADEIRA ISLAND / REGIONAL IDENTITY, Nas investigações realizadas nos periódicos da primeira metade do século XX, tornou-se claro que um dos repertórios frequentemente apresentados na Ilha da Madeira era a revista teatral. Esta é uma área que ainda não foi estudada, mas parece ser possível argumentar que, entre 1909, ano em que foi conhecido o primeiro teatro da revista teatral dos autores madeirenses, e o início dos anos 60, dezenas de revistas teatrais originais foram produzidas no Funchal. Heart failure is a disease with high direct and indirect costs. Current treatment includes drugs that alter disease progression and drugs that to improve symptoms. Loop diuretics are the cornerstone of congestion relief for acute management, as well as for chronic stabilization. In heart failure patients, maximal diuretic response is reduced by many individual factors. Diuretic resistance is defined as failure to achieve effective congestion relief despite appropriate or escalating diuretic doses. Its causes include impaired delivery of the diuretic to its luminal site of action, neurohormonal activation, tubular compensatory adaptation and drug interactions. Several strategies can be employed to aid decongestion of patients with impaired diuretic response. These include salt restriction, a higher effective single dose or higher dose frequency of loop diuretics, continuous infusion of diuretics and/or sequential nephron blockade through a synergistic combination of two or more diuretics from different classes. Ultrafiltration has also been found to be another effective and safe therapeutic option and should be considered in patients with refractory diuretic resistance. Overall, there is a lack of high-quality clinical data to guide the choice of treatment strategy and therapy should be tailored on a case-by-case basis. Resumo: A insuficiência cardíaca é uma doença com custos diretos e indiretos elevados. A terapêutica atual inclui fármacos que alteram a progressão da doença e fármacos que melhoram a sintomatologia. Os diuréticos de ansa constituem a pedra basilar no alívio da congestão quer na abordagem aguda quer na estabilização crónica. Nos doentes com insuficiência cardíaca, a resposta diurética máxima encontra-se diminuída devido a múltiplos fatores. A resistência aos diuréticos é definida como a ausência de alívio eficaz da congestão apesar de doses apropriadas ou crescentes de diuréticos. As causas de resistência aos diuréticos incluem o compromisso da entrega de diurético no seu local de ação, a ativação neuro-hormonal, a adaptação compensatória tubular e interações medicamentosas. Podem ser implementadas várias estratégias para diminuir a congestão em doentes com resposta diurética insuficiente. Essas estratégias incluem restrição salina, aumento da dose ou frequência dos diuréticos de ansa, infusão contínua de diuréticos e/ou bloqueio sequencial do nefrónio através da combinação de dois ou mais diuréticos de diferentes classes e com efeitos sinérgicos. A ultrafiltração tem-se revelado uma outra estratégia segura e eficaz e deve ser considerada em doentes com resistência aos diuréticos refratária. Verifica-se globalmente uma escassez de dados clínicos de elevada qualidade para guiar a escolha da estratégia terapêutica pelo que a abordagem deve ser adequada caso a caso. Since the early fifteenth century, huge parts of the Portuguese island of Madeira have been transformed from a natural into a cultural landscape. The most eminent feature of this anthropogenic landscape change is agricultural terraces, which are extremely solid in structure and thus resilient to erosion and collapse. This makes them ideal proxies for studying landscape dynamics. The analysis of eight soil profiles delivered answers to questions regarding (1) the age of terraces at different altitudes, (2) the stability of the soil, (3) the organic matter content of the soil, (4) the traditional practices for maintaining soil fertility and (5) the characteristics of local terrace architecture. The analysis proves an excellent adaptation of the terrace structures to local topography. The supporting walls are made of materials ranging from hewn basalt stones to soil blocks. Soil quality, regarding organic matter and structure, has been maintained by the applied traditional practices. Desde o início do século XV que grandes parcelas da paisagem natural madeirense foram transformadas em paisagens culturais. A prova mais evidente dessa transformação antropogénica da paisagem são os socalcos, que, por serem estruturas bastante sólidas e resistentes à erosão, constituem bons indicadores para o estudo das dinâmicas da paisagem. O estudo do perfil de oito parcelas de solo permitiu-nos determinar (1) a idade dos socalcos em diferentes altitudes, (2) a estabilidade dos solos, (3) a matéria orgânica que contêm, (4) as práticas tradicionais utilizadas na sua manutenção, e (5) as características arquitectónicas da concepção dos socalcos, demonstrando a sua excelente adaptação ao relevo. Além disso, constatou-se que as paredes de suporte foram contruídas com pedras de basalto ou blocos de terra. Através da análise da matéria orgânica e da estrutura do solo, verificou-se que o mesmo preservou as suas qualidades graças à utilização de técnicas tradicionais. Depuis le début du XVe siècle, une grande partie du paysage de l’île de Madère a été transformée en paysages culturels. Cette transformation anthropogénique a été principalement marquée par la construction de terrasses agricoles. Ces structures très solides, qui résistent à l’érosion, constituent un indicateur idéal pour l’étude de la dynamique des paysages. L’analyse de huit profils de sols a fourni des informations sur (1) l’âge des terrasses à des altitudes différentes, (2) la stabilité du sol, (3) sa teneur en matière organique, (4) les techniques traditionnelles de fertilisation du sol et (5) les caractéristiques architectoniques des terrasses qui montrent leur excellente adaptation à la topographie. Les murs porteurs se composent de pierres basaltiques ou de briques de terre. La qualité du sol (teneur en matière organique et structure) a été conservée par les pratiques traditionnelles.

Relatório de Estágio do Mestrado em Geografia Física - Ambiente e Ordenamento do Território apresentado à Faculdade de Letras O relatório agora apresentado resulta do estágio curricular realizado na "Associação Insular de Geografia" (AIG) entre novembro de 2018 a maio de 2019. A entidade de acolhimento é composta por três núcleos, entre eles, "Centro de Formação e Desenvolvimento Geográfico" (CFDG), "Núcleo de Estudos e Projetos" (NEP) e "Centro de Informação Europe Direct" (CIED-M), o qual efetua atividades, ações de sensibilização contra os riscos naturais presentes na Região Autónoma da Madeira (RAM), debates, criação de concursos, entre outros.O trabalho desenvolvido no período de estágio consistiu na criação de um projeto com vista à "Construção de um sistema de Monitorização de Desenvolvimento Sustentável. Âmbito Intermunicipal da Ilha da Madeira", no âmbito do NEP e deverá ser composto por duas partes: uma primeira, cujo trabalho passou pela referenciação dos problemas e soluções existentes e seleção dos indicadores que devem integrar este sistema e uma segunda parte, que passará pela implementação de uma plataforma website cuja finalidade principal passa pela monitorização e divulgação dos resultados obtidos. No estágio curricular desenvolvi a primeira parte do projeto, onde foram referidos os problemas existentes a necessidade de construção de um sistema de indicadores de monitorização de desenvolvimento sustentável (SIDS) como solução. A construção deste SIDS, foi importante para o estabelecer de critérios na seleção de indicadores, os quais tiveram como base a revisão bibliográfica e a caracterização do meio ambiente com a identificação das potencialidades e constrangimentos, de modo a selecionar os indicadores que melhor representam a realidade da RAM, sendo que após a seleção de indicadores foi realizada uma ficha de Metainformação de cada indicador simples.No total foram propostos 121 indicadores compostos (42 indicadores chave e 79 indicadores simples), divididos por 25 domínios, 4 dimensões (Ambiental, Económico, Institucional e Social) e 5 objetivos estratégicos (Promoção da Sustentabilidade Territorial e Coesão Territorial; Promoção da Competitividade da Economia; Promoção do Emprego e Inclusão Social, Formação do Capital Humano e Governação, Capacitação Institucional e Cooperação Territorial). Embora nem todos estes indicadores tenham sido incluídos no SIDS - dificuldade no apurar quanto a monitorização e facilidade de atualização em alguns indicadores – este Sistema apresenta-se como um decisivo ponto de partida para a implementação e acompanhamento das diferentes indicadores, domínios, dimensões e objetivos estratégicos associados ao desenvolvimento sustentável presente e futuro da RAM.. The report now presented results from the curricular internship held at the Insular Geography Association (IGA) between November 2018 and May 2019. The host entity is made up of three main cores, among them, the “Centre for Formation and Geographic Development” (CFGD), “Nucleus for Studies and Projects” (NSP) and the “Europe Direct Information Centre” (EDIC-M), which carries out activities, awareness actions against natural hazards present in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, debates, creation of competitions, among others. The work carried out during the internship period consisted in the production of a project to “Build a Sustainable Development Monitoring System. Madeira Island Intermunicipal Scope”, under the NSP, and should consist of two parts: a first one whose work has gone through the reference of existing problems and solutions and the selection of indicators that should integrate this system; in a second part, which will include the implementation of a website platform whose main purpose is to monitor and disseminate the obtained results. In the curricular internship I developed the first part of the project referring to the existing problems and the need to build a system of sustainable development monitoring indicators (SSDI) as a solution. The construction of this SSDI was important for establishing criteria in the selection of indicators, which were based on literature review and the characterization of the environment with the identification of the potentialities and constraints, in order to select the indicators that best represent the reality of ARM, and after the selection of indicators a Metainformation sheet of each simple indicator was performed. In total, 121 composite indicators were proposed (42 key indicators and 79 simple indicators), divided by 25 domains, 4 dimensions (Environmental, Economic, Institutional and Social) and 5 strategic objectives (Promoting Territorial Sustainability and Territorial Cohesion; Promoting Economic Competitiveness; Job Promotion and Social Inclusion; Human Capital Formation and Governance, Institutional Capacity Building and Territorial Cooperation). Although not all of these indicators have been included in SSDI - difficulty in monitoring and easy updating on some indicators - this System is a decisive starting point for the implementation and monitoring of the different indicators, domains, dimensions and strategic objectives associated with the present and future sustainable development of the ARM

Mestrado em Marketing A criação e organização de eventos constitui um elemento chave na estratégia de diversificação de qualquer destino turístico. Alguns eventos são, de facto, grandes catalisadores de desenvolvimento, a nível económico, social, cultural e político de um país, cidade ou região. Torna-se, pois, imprescindível para a Destination Marketing Organisation (DMO) conhecer o perfil dos turistas atraídos por tais eventos e compreender as motivações turísticas inerentes à participação nos mesmos. Como tal, a presente investigação debruça-se sobre a compreensão e clarificação das razões e motivações que impelem os turistas a visitar a Ilha da Madeira no decorrer da Festa da Flor, recorrendo ao framework conceptual Push e Pull. A metodologia utilizada neste estudo foi de natureza descritiva-explanatória, tendo por base uma abordagem quantitativa, com recurso à aplicação de um inquérito por questionário a 281 turistas, nas principais avenidas da cidade do Funchal, no decorrer da Festa da Flor, edição 2019. Os resultados evidenciam que os Gestores do Destino Madeira devem dar especial atenção aos fatores motivacionais internos (push): Escape / Fuga à rotina, Relaxe, Prestígio, União Familiar, Novidade / Conhecimento e Entretenimento, e aos fatores motivacionais externos (pull): Eventos Especiais, Condições Básicas e Naturais do Destino, Gastronomia e Exploração Cultural e Histórica. Por outro lado, os resultados demonstram que o evento especial em estudo, a Festa da Flor, não é o polo de atração que desencadeia o desejo de visitar a Ilha da Madeira. É, antes, encarado como um fator suplementar, uma oferta turística complementar posta à disposição dos visitantes. Event creation and organization are key elements in the diversification strategy of any tourist destination. Some events are indeed major catalysts for the economic, social, cultural and political development of a country, city or region. It is therefore essential for the Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) to know the profile of tourists attracted by such events and to understand the tourist motivations inherent in their participation. As such, this research focuses on understanding and clarifying the reasons and motivations that drive tourists to visit Madeira Island during the Flower Festival, using the Push and Pull conceptual framework. The methodology used in this study was descriptive and explanatory, based on a quantitative approach, using a questionnaire survey to 281 tourists, in the main avenues of Funchal, during the Festa da Flor, 2019 edition. The results show that the Destination Managers of Madeira should pay particular attention to the internal motivational factors (push): Escape / Routine Escape, Relax, Prestige, Family Union, Novelty / Knowledge and Entertainment, and the external motivational factors (pull): Special Events, Basic and Natural Destination Conditions, Gastronomy and Cultural and Historical Exploration. On the other hand, the results show that the special event under study, the Flower Festival, is not the attraction that triggers the desire to visit the island. Mestrado em Ciências Empresariais O Trabalho Final de Mestrado consiste num plano de negócios para a criação de um campo de férias radical na ilha da Madeira. Este projeto tem como finalidade atrair e conectar diferentes indivíduos com espírito aventureiro, dos quais se poderão destacar os praticantes de desportos radicais. Esta atração é possibilitada através da oferta de espaços e serviços que permitem praticar novos desportos radicais e melhorar a aprendizagem de alguns já desenvolvidos na ilha. Organizou-se o plano de negócios segundo a metodologia de Kuratko (2009) e fundamentou-se os resultados através de um inquérito aplicado a 250 indivíduos, documentos estratégicos e bases de dados. A análise financeira do projeto demonstrou dados positivos que comprovam a viabilidade do negócio. This master final dissertation consists in a business plan for the creation of a Radical Summer Camp in Madeira Island. This project aims to attract and connect diferent types of individuals with an adventure spirit, mostly action sports'athletes. This attraction is possible by offering infrastructures and services which allow the practice of new action sports and a better development of some that already exists in the island. O presente trabalho procura analisar a evolução da rede rodoviária na ilha da Madeira entre 1955 e 2015, desde o prelúdio, ao auge e estagnação do investimento na expansão da rede rodoviária e, deste modo, perceber de que forma o investimento e consequente evolução da rede se repercutiu numa melhoria das acessibilidades, na ocupação do território, distribuição da população e, consequentemente, na mudança dos padrões de mobilidade. Para isso, é feita uma breve incursão histórica à evolução da rede rodoviária regional, ao desenvolvimento do transporte terrestre e ao investimento nas infraestruturas rodoviárias e, posteriormente, perceber o impacto da mesma na mudança dos padrões de mobilidade e no desenvolvimento económico e social da região. O estudo assenta numa reconstituição, a partir de cartografia histórica da rede rodoviária da ilha da Madeira, baseado num modelo SIG, que permite quantificar as transformações da rede rodoviária e acessibilidades na região ao longo dos últimos 60 anos. As transformações da rede rodoviária ao longo deste período tiveram um impacto direto na melhoria das acessibilidades, competitividade e coesão económica e social, bem como na organização e estruturação do território. Em apenas 60 anos a ilha da Madeira transformou-se. Foram eliminadas barreiras físicas, findou-se o isolamento e, atualmente, é possível deslocar-se desde a capital madeisense até o concelho mais noroeste da ilha em apenas 51 minutos, verificando-se uma grande diferença, em comparação com os cerca de 165 minutos dos anos 50 do século XX. The present work is aimed to analyze the evolution of the road network of Madeira between 1955 and 2015, from the onset of its investments to expand Madeira's roads connections, to its peak and its stagnation. Based on these analyses, it’s possible understand how these investments and the consequent evolution of the network were reflected in an improvement in the accessibility, occupation of the territory and distribution of the population and, consequently, in the change of mobility patterns. To take this into account, this essay/ thesis has a brief historic incursion into the evolution of the regional road network and the development of road transport and road infrastructures, while at the same time, realizing its impact on the changing patterns of mobility and the economic and social development of a region. On the basis of this study was a reconstruction based on the historical cartography of the Madeira island road network, endured by GIS model that allows us to quantify the transformations of the road networks and accessibility in the region during the last 60 years. The transformations of the road networks throughout this period had a direct impact on the improvement of accessibility, competitiveness and economic and social cohesion, as well as on the organization and structuring of the territory, in only 60 years the island of Madeira was transformed. Physical barriers have been eliminated, and isolation has ended, and it is now possible to go from the city of Funchal to the northwestern place of the island (Porto Moniz) in just 51 minutes, compared to about 165 minutes that we needed in the 1950s.

No período de 1955 a 1970, os anos de 1957, 1964, 1969 e 1970 são os que registam maior número de passaportes concedidos a residentes na freguesia de Água de Pena, sobretudo do concelho de Machico. Em 1957, o destino de emigração mais procurado é o Brasil, seguido da Venezuela. No ano de 1964, a grande procura é o embarque para a Venezuela, que se mantém em 1969, embora com decréscimo. Enquanto, em 1970, o destino mais procurado é a Inglaterra, seguido da Venezuela, com grande redução. Assim, no período estudado, foram concedidos 243 passaportes para a Venezuela, 125 para o Brasil e, a partir de 1970, a Inglaterra surge comonovo destino de emigração, com 77 passaportes atribuídos. Os registos de passaportes do Governo Civil do Funchal permitem conhecer os nomes próprios e os nomes de família dos migrantes, observando a frequência de prenomes como Beatriz, João, José, Maria e Manuel. Assistimos a uma diversificação destes com o passar do tempo, a par da tendência para a formação de prenomes compostos por dois nomes, como João Manuel e Maria José. Quanto aos nomes de família, predominam as formas Freitas, Nunes, Pereira e Vieira, assim como as composições Freitas Branco e Fernandes Belo, entre outras. Encontramos algumas alcunhas que já são nomes de família, como Bisca, e mesmo um nome de profissão, Carregador., From 1955 to 1970, the years 1957, 1964, 1969 and 1970 were the ones that registered the highest number of passports granted to residents of the parish of Água de Pena, mainly from the municipality of Machico. In 1957, the most sought after emigration destination is Brazil, followed by Venezuela. In 1964, the great demand is the departure to Venezuela, which remains in 1969, although with decrease, whereas in 1970 the most sought after destination is England, followed by Venezuela, with a great reduction. Thus, in the period studied, 243 passports were granted to Venezuela, 125 to Brazil and, from 1970 onwards, England emerges as a new emigration destination, with 77 passports. The passport records of the Civil Government of Funchal allow us to know the emigrants’ first names and family names, observing the frequency of first names such as Beatriz, João, José, Maria and Manuel. Dissertação de mestrado em Economia, Como os residentes têm um papel fundamental para um bom acolhimento dos visitantes, nesta dissertação são abordadas as perceções que os residentes têm dos impactes do turismo na ilha da Madeira, pretendendo igualmente conhecer um pouco melhor a dinâmica turística da região. Na componente empírica, com base em dados recolhidos via inquérito aos residentes, analiso até que ponto é que estes mantêm uma perceção positiva dos impactes da atividade turística e, genericamente, do contributo desta para o desenvolvimento da ilha. Para tal, são analisadas as opiniões dos residentes separadamente por tipo de impacte, sendo estes, económicos, ambientais, culturais e socias. Este tipo de análise é útil para uma maior compreensão das opiniões dos residentes, identificando quais as consequências negativas que o turismo acarreta na região, na visão dos mesmos, podendo estas serem trabalhadas, assim como valorizar as consequências boas. Os resultados empíricos alcançados dizem-nos que não existe um excesso de turismo na ilha visto que a maioria dos inquiridos deseja que o fluxo turístico aumente, o que significa que concordam que o turismo é benéfico para a região. Esta questão foi esclarecida através das respostas às afirmações relativas aos impactes económicos, ambientais, culturais e sociais, em que a perceção da maioria foi bastante positiva. Não deixam de ter a perceção de que existem consequências negativas mas a média das respostas foi maior nas afirmações positivas. Logo, em geral, posso afirmar, tendo como base a minha amostra, que o turismo é algo que ajuda o desenvolvimento geral da região., As residents have a fundamental role for a good reception of visitors, this dissertation addresses the perceptions that residents have of the impacts of tourism on Madeira island, also intending to know a little better the tourist dynamics of the region. In the empirical component, based on data collected through the survey of residents, I analyzed the extent to which they maintain a positive perception of the impacts of the tourist activity and, generally, the contribution of this to the development of the island. For this, the residents' opinions are analyzed separately by type of impact, being these: economic, environmental, cultural and social. This type of analysis is useful for a better understanding of the residents' opinions, identifying the negative consequences that the tourism has on the region, according to their vision, being possible to work on that for policy purposes, as well as valuing the good consequences. The empirical results reached indicate that there is no excess of tourism on the region since most respondents want the tourist flow to increase, which means that they agree that tourism is beneficial. This question has been clarified through the responses to the affirmations concerning the economic, environmental, cultural and social impacts, in which the perception of the majority was quite positive. They do not fail to realize that there are negative consequences, but the average response was greater in positive affirmations. So, in general, it can be said, based on in the sample, that tourism is something that contributes to the overall development of the region.

O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o perfil e padrões de consumo dos espetadores não residentes que assistiram ao jogo de futebol entre as seleções nacionais de Portugal e Suécia numa das mais importantes regiões turísticas de Portugal: Ilha da Madeira. 108 (n) indivíduos não residentes com idades compreendidas entre os 18 e 68 anos, foram questionados aleatoriamente. Os dados foram analisados com base em análise descritiva e inferencial (analise regressão linear e testes não paramétricos). Os resultados demonstraram que: a) o gasto total dos indivíduos não residentes pertencentes à amostra ascendeu a 24960 euros (€); b) em média, cada visitante gastou €: 231 na cidade. O estudo revelou ainda que o “tempo de chegada ao estádio” foi o fator que mais influenciou positivamente o gasto total. Os resultados sugerem que a organização do evento deverá promover atividades de entretenimento para encorajar a chegada dos indivíduos ao evento desportivo com maior antecedência. O estudo aponta ainda que indivíduos com nível de educação mais elevado e salário têm maior predisposição para gastar dinheiro em comida e alojamento. Em geral, o estudo contribuiu para um aprofundamento do conhecimento para melhor adaptar os eventos desportivos e captar novos indivíduos fora da comunidade. This study analyses the profile and consumption patterns of non-residents spectators who attended the football game among the national teams of Portugal and Sweden at one of the most important tourist regions of Portugal: Madeira Island. Data collection was performed at the entrance of the football stadium. 108 (n) non-resident spectators were randomly surveyed, with ages within 18 and 68 years old. Data were analyzed based on descriptive and inferential statistics (linear regression analysis and non-parametric tests). The results showed that: a) the expenditure of sample’s non-resident spectators amounted to a total of 24960 euros (€); b) on average, each tourist spent 231 euros (€) in the city. The findings also revealed that ‘arrival time at the stadium’ was the variable that most positively influenced the total expenditure. These results suggest that events’ organizers should promote fan-friendly entertainment activities to encourage early arrival at the sporting event. The study also pointed out that individuals with higher education and wage levels have a greater predisposition to spend more money on food/drink and accommodation. In general, the study contributed to a deepening of the knowledge to better adapt the sporting events and capture new individuals outside the community.

Os autores reportam o caso clínico de um homem, 43 anos de idade, natural e residente na ilha da Madeira, emigrado na Venezuela até há 6 anos. Em Março 2009, observado por aparecimento de lesão pápulo-crostosa de bordos regulares eritematosos, indolor, pruriginosa, com dimensões de 4,5 x 3 cm, localizada no dorso, com 2 meses de evolução. Como antecedentes, refere história de lesão da mucosa bucal, com exame histopatológico compatível com paracoccidioidomicose (PCM). Foram efectuadas duas biópsias da lesão cutânea para avaliação histopatológica e micológica. O exame histopatológico revelou a presença de múltiplas células circulares, sugerindo distribuição característica de “roda de leme”. O estudo micológicos revelou, no exame directo, a presença de leveduras – algumas em gemulação. As culturas permitiram isolar o Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. A radiografia pulmonar apresentava infiltrado bilateral e simétrico, nos lobos centrais e basais. A Tomografia Axial Computadorizada torácica demonstrou múltiplos nódulos espiculados, áreas de opacidade e bronquiectasias. Foi efectuada broncofibroscopia (sem alterações) e simultaneamente foi obtido o lavado broncoalveolar (LBA). A cultura, a 25º C, revelou a presença de hifas e clamidósporos (forma filamentosa). Na cultura, a 37º C, não se obteve a forma leveduriforme. O tratamento efectuado foi o itraconazol 200 mg/dia, durante 6 meses, com regressão da lesão. Até à actualidade, nenhum caso de PCM foi reportado na ilha da Madeira, Portugal. Embora não seja frequente, fora das áreas endémicas, os dermatologistas devem ser capazes de reconhecer e diagnosticar micoses sistémicas, como a PCM. We report a case of a 43 years-old portuguese man, natural and resident in Madeira island, who was emigrated in Venezuela until 6 years ago. He was observed on March 2008 for a crusted papulo-nodular lesion with erythematous regular borders, pruritic and sized 4,5 x 3,0 cm, located on the dorsum, with a 2 month history. There was no palpable lymphadenopathy. He denied other simptomatology. On March of 1999, the patient had a mouth lesion which was compatible with paracoccidioidomycosis on histopathological examination. He was not aware of any associated pathologies. We performed two punch biopsies of the cutaneous lesion for histopathological and mycological examination. The histopathology showed the presence of multiple round cells of different size (yeast cells) in a narrow base suggesting the classic “pilot’s wheels”, on Hematoxiline & Eosine stain. On direct microscopic examination the mycology revealed yeast of different sizes – some of them on gemulation. The cultures, at 24º and 37º, isolated Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. The thoracic x-ray revealed a heterogeneous, bilateral and symmetric pattern located towards the central and basal portions. The CT scan of the chest showed multiple, micronodular and striated lesions (some of them with small cavities), with tendency to coalesce. To characterize better these lung abnormalities, the patient performed a fibrobronchoscopy of the respiratory tract which was normal. The culture, at 25 ºC, obtained from the sputum of the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL) showed Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. Routine laboratory studies were normal and serology negative for HIV and tuberculosis. The treatment of choice was itraconazol 200 mg/day, for 6 months. As far as we know no case of PCM has been reported in Madeira. Although it is not a frequent disease outside the endemic areas, dermatologists should be able to recognise and diagnose systemic mycosis like PCM. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

No âmbito deste trabalho, é pretendido abordar os problemas associados à deslocação manual de cargas nos campos agrícolas na ilha da madeira. Existem várias dificuldades específicas na atividade agrícola da região, nomeadamente relacionados com a sua geomorfologia. Alguns dos campos, trilhos e escadarias, feitas de alvenaria e expostas nas paredes dos socalcos, exigem cuidados redobrados para circular em segurança, mais ainda quando os agricultores transportam cargas que podem ser muito significativas. É pretendido facilitar as tarefas realizadas manualmente e, porventura, sensibilizar os agricultores a terem mais preocupação com o seu bem-estar e segurança. O projeto desenvolvido procura tornar as tarefas mais fáceis, tenta resolver os problemas ergonómicos e posturas adotadas ao sustentar cargas nos ombros e nas costas, e permite que os agricultores desloquem as cargas em terrenos com poucas condições para circulação. O intuito deste trabalho passa por manter a atividade na região com o cariz tradicional, que é importante para a manutenção da paisagem humanizada e reduzir as dificuldades associadas a esta atividade.
