Search

Quantum computers must achieve large-scale, fault-tolerant operation to deliver on their promise of transformational processing power [1-4]. This will require thousands or millions of high-fidelity quantum gates and similar numbers of qubits [5]. Demonstrations using neutral-atom qubits trapped and manipulated by lasers have shown that this modality can provide high two-qubit gate (CZ) fidelities and scalable operation [6-10]. However, the gates in these demonstrations are driven by lasers that do not resolve individual qubits, with universal computation enabled by physical mid-circuit shuttling of the qubits. This relatively slow operation will greatly extend runtimes for useful, large-scale computation. Here we demonstrate a universal neutral-atom quantum computer with gate rates limited by optical switching times, rather than shuttling, by individually addressing tightly focused laser beams at an array of single atoms. We achieve CZ fidelity of 99.35(4)% and local single qubit RZ gate fidelity of 99.902(8)%. Moreover, we demonstrate non-destructive readout of alkali-atom qubits with sub-percent loss, which boosts operational speed. This technique also enables us to measure 99.73(3)% CZ fidelity with atom-loss events excluded, which is a record among long lived neutral-atom qubits and highlights the path to higher fidelity and error correction. Our results represent a critical step towards large-scale, fault-tolerant neutral-atom quantum computers that can execute computations on practical timescales.

A bright collimated neutron source is an essential tool for global security missions and fundamental scientific research. In this paper, we study a compact high-yield and high-angular-flux neutron source utilizing the break-up reaction of laser-driven deuterons in a $^9\text{Be}$ converter. The neutron generation scaling from such a reaction is used to guide the choice and optimization of the acceleration process for the bulk ions in a low density $\text{CD}_2$ foam. In particular, the collisionless shock acceleration mechanism is exploited with proper choice in the laser and target parameter space to accelerate these ions towards energies above the temperature of the distribution. Particle-In-Cell and Monte Carlo simulations are coupled to investigate this concept and possible adverse effects, as well as the contribution from the surface ions accelerated and the optimal converter design. The simulation results indicated that our design can be a practical approach to increase both the neutron yield and forward flux of laser-driven neutron sources, reaching peak angular neutron flux $>10^{11}$ neutron/sr and yield $>10^{11}$ neutron/pulse with present-day kJ-class high-power lasers. Such developments will advance fundamental neutron science, high precision radiography and other global security applications with the laser-driven sources., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures

The lattice dynamics of the ferromagnetic spinel CuCr2Se4 (Tc = 430K) was studied experimentally by measuring the Raman spectra and theoretically by calculation of zone center phonon frequencies within a shell model. All Raman allowed modes (A1g + E_g + 3F2g) were identified and assigned to specific atomic motions. The relative intensity of the Raman lines varies strongly with excitation photon energy between 1.58 and 2.71 eV, but no significant phonon anomalies are observed near Tc., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables

The Raman spectra of single crystals of NiFe2O4 were studied in various scattering configurations in close comparison with the corresponding spectra of Ni0.7Zn0.3Fe2O4 and Fe3O4. The number of experimentally observed Raman modes exceeds significantly that expected for a normal spinel structure and the polarization properties of most of the Raman lines provide evidence for a microscopic symmetry lower than that given by the Fd-3m space group. We argue that the experimental results can be explained by considering the short range 1:1 ordering of Ni2+ and Fe3+ at the B-sites of inverse spinel structure, most probably of tetragonal P4_122/P4_322 symmetry., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 6 tables

BiFeO$_3$ thin films can be epitaxially stabilized in a nearly-tetragonal phase under a high biaxial compressive strain. Here we investigate the polarized Raman spectra of constrained BiFeO$_3$ films with tetragonal-like (BFO-T), rhombohedral-like (BFO-R) and multiphase (BFO-T+R) structure. Based on analysis of the number and symmetry of the Raman lines, we provide strong experimental evidence that the nearly-tetragonal films are monoclinic ($Cc$ symmetry) and not tetragonal $(P4mm)$. Through the Raman mapping technique we show localized coexistence of BFO-T and BFO-R phases with the relative fraction dependent on the film thickness., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Millimeter size single crystals of double perovskite La2NiMnO6 (LNMO) were grown by the High Temperature Solution Growth Method. The magnetic measurements and polarized Raman spectra between 5 and 350K provide evidence that the crystals have high degree of Ni(2+)/Mn(4+)ordering, small amount of lattice defects and highest Tc = 288K reported so far for ferromagnetic double perovskites. At a microscopic level the crystals are heavily twinned and the effect of twinning on the Raman spectra is analyzed in detail., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Polarized Raman spectra of non-superconducting SrFe$_2$As$_2$ and superconducting K$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.6}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($T_c = 37$ K) are reported. All four phonon modes (A$_{1g}$ + B$_{1g}$ + 2E$_g$) allowed by symmetry, are found and identified. Shell model gives reasonable description of the spectra. No detectable anomalies are observed near the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition in SrFe$_2$As$_2$ or the superconducting transition in K$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.6}$Fe$_2$As$_2$., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

We report the polarized Raman spectra of undoped ReOFeAs (Re = Sm, La) collected at room temperature from $ab$ surfaces of impurity free microcrystals. The spectra exhibit sharp phonon lines on very weak electronic scattering background. The frequency and symmetry of the four Raman phonons involving out-of-plane atomic vibrations are found at 170 cm-1 (A1g, Sm), 201 cm-1 (A1g, As), 208 cm-1 (B1g, Fe), 345 cm-1(B1g, O) for SmOFeAs, and 162 cm-1 (A1g, La), 208 cm-1 (A1g, As), 201 cm-1 (B1g, Fe), 316 cm-1 (B1g, O) for LaOFeAs.

The polarized Raman scattering spectra from freshly cleaved $ab$, $ac$, and $bc$ surfaces of high quality twin free YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.5}$ (Ortho-II) single crystals ($T_c$=57.5 K and $\Delta T = 0.6$ K) were studied between 80 and 300 K. All eleven $A_g$ Raman modes expected for the Ortho-II structure as well some modes of $B_{2g}$ and $B_{3g}$ symmetry were identified in close comparison with predictions of lattice dynamical calculations. The electronic scattering from the $ab$ planes is strongly anisotropic and decreases between 200 and 100 K within the temperature range of previously reported pseudogap opening. The coupling of phonons to Raman active electronic excitations manifested by asymmetric (Fano) profiles of several modes also decreases in the same range. Among the new findings that distinguish the Raman scattering of Ortho-II from that of Ortho-I phase is the unusual relationship ($\alpha_{xx} \approx -\alpha_{yy}$) between the elements of the Raman tensor of the apex oxygen $A_g$ mode., Comment: 12 papes, 6 figures

We report on the structural, magnetic, and Raman-scattering studies of double perovskite structure Sr2Y(Ru1-xCux)O6-d systems made by systematic synthesis processes with various numbers of doping concentrations and sintering temperatures. We observed different behaviors resulting from the different thermal treatments. In particular, superconductivity in Cu-doped Sr2YRuO6 has been observed only for partially melted ceramic materials. We show that superconductivity is associated with the 1:2:3 phase (YSr2Cu3Ot), similar to that of Y-Sr-Cu-O samples sintered at high temperature.

The polarized Raman spectra of orthorhombic RMnO3 series (R=La,Pr,Nd,Sm,Eu,Gd,Tb,Dy,Ho,Y) were studied at room temperature. The variation of phonon frequencies with R ionic radius rR as a whole confirms the commonly accepted Raman line assignments with two noticeable exceptions: (1) with decreasing rR the stretching Ag(1) and bending Ag(3) modes strongly mix for R=Sm to Tb, while for further decrease or rR (R=Dy,Ho,Y) the Ag(3) mode is observed at higher frequency than Ag(1) mode; (2) similar distortion-dependent mode mixing takes place for the rotational Ag(2) and O1(x) [Ag(7)] modes. The mode mixing is particularly strong for the RMnO3 compounds with rR values close to the transition from A-type to incommensurate sinusoidal antiferromagnetic ordering at low temperatures. The frequency of rotational Ag(2) and Ag(4) modes scales to the angles of MnO6 [101] and [010] rotations, respectively, and could be used as a measure of their value.

We have examined the effects of 20 keV electron irradiation on [-Cu(1)-O(1)-]n chain oxygen arrangements in oxygen deficient but otherwise twin-free YBa2Cu3O6+x single crystals. Comparison of polarized Raman spectra of non-irradiated and irradiated areas provides evidence that electron bombardments instigate the collective hopping of oxygen atoms either from an interstitial at O(5) site to a vacant O(1) chain site or by reshuffling the chain segments to extend the average length of chains without changing the overall oxygen content. This oxygen ordering effect, while counter-intuitive, is analogous to that found in the photoexcitation induced ordering in which temporal charge imbalance from electron-hole pair creation by inelastic scattering of incident electrons causes a local lattice distortion which brings on the atomic rearrangements.

GaN-nanorods grown on Si(111) substrates are found strain- and defect-free as characterized by micro Raman spectroscopy, secondary electron (SE) and cathode-luminescence (CL) imaging. The matrix supporting the nanorods bears the brunt of all strains, strain-relaxations, and defect generations, giving the nanorods an ideal environment to grow to perfection. Photo-excitations by the Raman laser source and electron irradiation during CL imaging lead to an increase of non-equilibrium electrons, suggesting an effective approach to photo-emitting or field emitting device applications. The nanorods, largely isolated from but perfectly aligned with the sustaining matrix, are grown in excellent epitaxy with the Si substrates.

Intrinsic catalytic process by capillary condensation of Ga-atoms into nanotrenches, formed among impinging islands during the wurzite-GaN thin film deposition, is shown to be an effective path to growing GaN nanorods without metal catalysts. The nano-capillary brings within it a huge imbalance in equilibrium partial pressure of Ga relative to the growth ambient. GaN nanorods thus always grow out of a holding nanotrench and conform to the boundaries of surrounding islands. The nanorods are epitaxially orientated with <0001>GaN // <111>Si and <2110>GaN // <110>Si similar to the matrix. Concaved geometry is essential and is a condition that limits the axial dimension of the nanorods protruding above the base (matrix) material region. Revelation of the growth mechanism in the current context suggests that fabrication of nano quantum structures with controlled patterns is enabling for any attainable dimensions

The polarized Raman spectra of layered ruthenates of the Srn+1RunO3n+1 (n=1,2,3) Ruddlesden-Popper series were measured between 10 and 300 K. The phonon spectra of Sr3Ru2O7 and Sr4Ru3O10 confirmed earlier reports for correlated rotations of neighboring RuO6 octahedra within double or triple perovskite blocks. The observed Raman lines of Ag or B1g symmetry were assigned to particular atomic vibrations by considering the Raman modes in simplified structures with only one double or triple RuO6 layer per unit cell and by comparison to the predictions of lattice dynamical calculations for the real Pban and Pbam structures. Along with discrete phonon lines, a continuum scattering, presumably of electronic origin, is present in the zz, xx and xy, but not in the x'y' and zx spectra. Its interference with phonons results in Fano shape for some of the lines in the xx and xy spectra. The temperature dependencies of phonon parameters of Sr3Ru2O7 exhibit no anomaly between 10 and 300 K where no magnetic transition occurs. In contrast, two B1g lines in the spectra of Sr4Ru3O10, corresponding to oxygen vibrations modulating the Ru-O-Ru bond angle, show noticeable hardening with ferromagnetic ordering at 105 K, thus indicating strong spin-phonon interaction., Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures

Orthorhombic Y$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.5$) was prepared under high pressure and the variations with $x$ of its structural, magnetic, electrical properties and the polarized Raman spectra were investigated. The lattice parameters change systematically with $x$. Although there are strong indications for increasing disorder above $x = 0.20$, the average structure remains orthorhombic in the whole substitutional range. Ca doping increases conductivity, but temperature dependence of resistivity $\rho$(T) remains semiconducting for all $x$. The average magnetic exchange interaction changes from antiferromagnetic for $x < 0.08$ to ferromagnetic for $x > 0.08$. The evolution with $x$ of the Raman spectra provides evidence for increasingly disordered oxygen sublattice at $x \geq 0.10$, presumably due to quasistatic and/or dynamical Jahn-Teller distortions., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

We report an infrared reflection spectroscopy study of La$_{1/2}$Ca$_{1/2}$MnO$_3$ over a broad frequency range and temperature interval which covers the transitions from the high temperature paramagnetic to ferromagnetic and, upon further cooling, to antiferromagnetic phase. The structural phase transition, accompanied by a ferromagnetic ordering at T$_C$=234 K, leads to enrichment of the phonon spectrum. A charge ordered antiferromagnetic insulating ground state develops below the N\'eel transition temperature T$_N$=163 K. This is evidenced by the formation of charge density waves and opening of a gap with the magnitude of 2$\Delta_0$ = (320 $\pm$ 15) cm$^{-1}$ in the excitation spectrum. Several of the infrared active phonons are found to exhibit anomalous frequency softening. The polarized Raman spectra of stoichiometric LaTiO$_3$ (T$_N = 150$ K) were measured between 6 and 300 K. In contrast to earlier report on half-metallic LaTiO$_{3.02}$, neither strong background scattering, nor Fano shape of the Raman lines was observed. The high frequency phonon line at 655 cm$^{-1}$ exhibits anomalous softening below T$_N$: a signature for structural rearrangement. The assignment of the Raman lines was done by comparison to the calculations of lattice dynamics and the nature of structural changes upon magnetic ordering are discussed. The broad Raman band, which appears in the antiferromagnetic phase, is assigned to two-magnon scattering. The estimated superexchange constant $J = 15.4\pm0.5$ meV is in excellent agreement with the result of neutron scattering studies., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

Polarized Raman scattering and infrared reflection spectra of hexagonal HoMnO$_3$ single crystals in the temperature range 10-300 K are reported. Group-theoretical analysis is performed and scattering selection rules for the second order scattering processes are presented. Based on the results of lattice dynamics calculations, performed within the shell model, the observed lines in the spectra are assigned to definite lattice vibrations. The magnetic ordering of Mn ions, which occurs below T$_N$=76 K, is shown to effect both Raman- and infrared-active phonons, which modulate Mn-O-Mn bonds and, consequently, Mn exchange interaction., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

The Raman spectra of CaFe2O4 were measured with several exact scattering configurations between 20 and 520K and the symmetry of all observed Raman lines was determined. The Ag and B2g lines were assigned to definite phonon modes by comparison to the results of lattice dynamical calculations. The polarized Raman spectra from ab and ac surfaces of single crystal NaxCoO2 (x~0.7), parent compound of recently discovered superconductor NaxCoO2.yH2O, are reported and discussed. The crystals were hexagon platelets of typical size 3x3x0.1 mm. Three of the five (A1g+E1g+3E2g) Raman active phonons were unambiguously identified at 458 (E1g), 494(E2g) and 574 (A1g) cm-1. The spectra from ab and ac surfaces differ significantly and provide evidence that within hours after preparation the ac surface, unlike the ab one, is strongly disordered. The mixed-valence perovskitelike manganites are characterized by unique interrelation of Jahn-Teller distortions, electric and magnetic properties. The Jahn-Teller distortion follows the Mn(3+)->Mn(4+) charge transfer with some delay. Its development depends on the lifetime of Mn in (3+) state, governed by the Mn(4+)/Mn(3+) ratio and magnetic correlation. The non-coherence of Jahn-Teller distortions in orthorhombic mixed-valence manganites and rhombohedral RMnO3 (R = rare earth) results in oxygen disorder. We demonstrate that the Raman spectra in this case are dominated by disorder-induced bands reflecting the oxygen partial phonon density of states (PDOS). The PDOS origin of the main Raman bands in insulating phases of such compounds is evidenced by the similar lineshape of experimental spectra and calculated smeared PDOS and disappearance of the PDOS bands in ordered ferromagnetic metallic phase., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The conductivity spectra of c-axis oriented thin RuSr$_2$GdCu$_2$O$_8$ film on SrTiO$_3$ substrate, prepared by pulsed-laser deposition, are obtained from the analysis of the reflectivity spectra over broad frequency range and temperatures between 10 and 300 K. The free charge carriers are found to be strongly overdamped with their scattering rate (1.0 eV at room temperature) exceeding the plasma frequency (0.55 eV). Four phonon lines are identified in the experimental spectra and assigned to the specific oxygen related in-plane polarized vibrations based on the comparison with the results of a lattice dynamics shell model calculations., Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures
