Abstract

Inosine Acedoben Dimepranol (IAD) has immunomodulatory and antiviral properties and is used in the treatment of viral infections. The aim of the present study was to develop a powder for oral solution in sachets containing high dose IAD (1000 mg). The formulations were prepared by direct dry mixing of the components using the dilution principle. Optimal composition and process parameters for the development of high dosage powder were established. Solubility studies showed pH-dependent solubility of IAD. The prepared powder was characterized by a short reconstitution time. In addition, the oral solution exhibits good organoleptic properties and remains stable for 30 min. Stability studies indicated that the sachets remained stable under accelerated conditions for 3 months. In conclusion, the developed powder for oral solution in sachets containing 1000 mg IAD represents an economical alternative to other solid dosage forms with the advantages of rapid dissolution and convenient intake for the patient.

Abstract

The Nuclotron-base Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), with commissioning of the facility expected in late 2022. The Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD) has been designed to operate at NICA and its components are currently in production. The detector is expected to be ready for data taking with the first beams from NICA. This document provides an overview of the landscape of the investigation of the QCD phase diagram in the region of maximum baryonic density, where NICA and MPD will be able to provide significant and unique input. It also provides a detailed description of the MPD set-up, including its various subsystems as well as its support and computing infrastructures. The species-specific and age-related autumn migration strategies of the sedge, reed and great reed warbler were investigated at stopover sites between central Europe and north-eastern Africa during autumn. Adult reed warblers accumulated larger fat reserves than juveniles and consequently were able to cover longer distances from most stopover sites. Juvenile sedge warblers, on the other hand, left Europe with significantly larger fat reserves than adults as opposed to the populations migrating along the western route. Both juvenile and adult great reed warblers were potentially able to make long flights without refuelling from the northern part of the Mediterranean region onwards. It was the proximity of large ecological barriers that had the most prominent influence on the potential flight distances of adult and juvenile Acrocephalus warblers during their southward migration. In reed and sedge warblers, the differences in mean flight distances covered by adults and juveniles were the largest (ca. 600 km) just before the crossing of the Mediterranean Sea, but smaller (ca. 200 and 400 km, respectively) in front of the Sahara Desert. Juvenile and adult great reed warblers were potentially able to cover 1660 km from Turkey, which was also supported by very low numbers of individuals caught at the Egyptian ringing sites. The results of this study carried out in the key regions of the eastern European–African flyway documented that migration strategies differed between adults and juveniles of three long-distance migrant species, yet this variation depended on the migration stage and the proximity of natural ecological barriers. Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the changes in corrosion behaviour of severely deformed by accumulative roll bonding aluminium alloy AA1050. Design/methodology/approach: To determine the influence of the accumulative roll bonding on microstructure, texture, and grain size, electron backscattered diffraction was used. Corrosion behaviour was evaluated in a 3.5 wt.% sodium chloride water solution using anodic polarisation. Findings: It was found out that accumulative roll bonding up to eight cycles led to an increase in corrosion rate compared to annealed alloy, but the increase in the number of cycles of accumulative roll bonding from two to eight shows a tendency toward lowering corrosion rates. It has a beneficial influence on pitting corrosion susceptibility. Research limitations/implications: The presented research focuses only on the influence of texture and grain size on severely deformed aluminium alloy AA1050 corrosion. Other factors, such as accumulated during deformation stresses, could also play their role in the corrosion process. Abstract

A comparison between the relative distribution of the mass density aerosol phase of aerodispersed systems of limited volume (aerosols of high concentration) and the relative distribution of the densities of some liquids was made in this work. The array of data used for the aerosols, was obtained in an experimental setup based on laser light scattering. The data used for the liquids was taken from the reference literature. The collected data for the aerosols are approximated with Gaussian distributions and presented graphically. Abstract

Purpose: The presented research aims to determine the microstructural changes in weldments of commercially pure titanium Grade 1 after welding by hollow cathode arc discharge in vacuum and related changes in the corrosion behaviour of the weldments. Design/methodology/approach: Macro and microstructure of weldments were studied using optical microscopy. Corrosion behaviour of untreated Grade 1 and heat-affected zone of weldments of Grade 1 was investigated using electrochemical testing, including open circuit potential measurements and potentiodynamic polarisation. As an aggressive environment, 1 M KBr water solution was used. Findings: Welding by hollow cathode arc discharge in vacuum leads to the formation of a coarse Widmanstätten structure in the heat-affected zone. This imperfect structure results in a passive layer with worsened protective properties, thus increasing the corrosion rate of weldments by up to two orders of magnitude compared to Grade 1 in as-received condition. The passive layer on the welded surfaces did not allow Grade 1 to acquire a stable corrosion potential during potenitodynamic polarization. Research limitations/implications: Titanium and its alloys are passivating metallic materials, and their corrosion resistance depends on the properties of a thin protective surface layer. Changes in the underlying metal microstructure can affect the passivation behaviour of titanium and the properties of this layer. Welding by hollow cathode arc discharge in vacuum alters the microstructure of heat-affected zone, thereby causing Widmanstätten microstructure to form. As the passive layer over that microstructure has worsened protective properties, we suggest additional heat treatment after welding to be applied. Future experimental research on this topic is needed. Originality/value: Welding by hollow cathode arc discharge in vacuum is a welding method allowing weldments to be done in a clean environment and even in space. In the specialised literature, information on the structure and corrosion resistance of weldments of commercially pure titanium Grade 1 welded by hollow cathode arc discharge in vacuum is missing. Abstract

The great reed warbler Acrocephalus arundinaceus is a common migrant through the Western Palearctic. However, its migration strategy, especially the spatiotemporal pattern of accumulation and utilisation of energy stores en route, is poorly known. Using ringing data collected at distant stopover sites located from Central Europe to Asia Minor, we observed that pattern in juvenile great reed warblers migrating along the eastern European flyway in autumn. We analysed body condition and stopover duration and estimated potential flight ranges for this species, taking into account two large ecological barriers – the Mediterranean Sea and the Sahara Desert – which it crosses during its southward migration. In Central and South-Eastern Europe the seasonal trends in body condition were similar and non-linear, with low values in August (i.e., during intensive migration of Acrocephalidae), and then a significant increase from the beginning of September until the end of the month. Estimated potential flight ranges showed that individuals migrating through Central and South-Eastern Europe might generally reach only the northern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. On the other hand, those flying from Asia Minor were able to reach the northern edge of the Sahel zone, crossing two large ecological barriers without refuelling. Therefore, it seems that great reed warblers change their autumn strategy en route: first, they migrate in short steps with low energy reserves through continental Europe; and then, after intensive refuelling before the Mediterranean Sea, they reach sub-Saharan Africa in a long flight. Based on the analysis of ringing data from several stopover sites, we show the complex pattern of how a long-distance migratory species accumulates and utilises its energy stores en route. Migratory birds regularly perform impressive long-distance flights, which aretimed relative to the anticipated environmental resources at destination areasthat can be several thousand kilometres away. Timely migration requiresdiverse strategies and adaptations that involve an intricate interplay betweeninternal clock mechanisms and environmental conditions across the annualcycle. Here we review what challenges birds face during long migrations tokeep track of time as they exploit geographically distant resources that mayvary in availability and predictability, and summarize the clock mechanismsthat enable them to succeed.We examine the following challenges: departingin time for spring and autumn migration, in anticipation of future environmentalconditions; using clocks on the move, for example for orientation,navigation and stopover; strategies of adhering to, or adjusting, the timeprogramme while fitting their activities into an annual cycle; and keepingpace with a world of rapidly changing environments. We then elaboratethese themes by case studies representing long-distance migrating birdswith different annual movement patterns and associated adaptations oftheir circannual programmes. We discuss the current knowledge on howendogenous migration programmes interact with external informationacross the annual cycle, how components of annual cycle programmesencode topography and range expansions, and how fitness may be affectedwhen mismatches between timing and environmental conditions occur.Lastly, we outline open questions and propose future research directions.This article ispart of the themedissue ‘Wild clocks: integrating chronobiologyand ecology to understand timekeeping in free-living animals’.
