Abstract The biocompatible polyurethane acrylate (PUA) nanopillars were fabricated by soft lithography using three different sizes of nanobeads (350, 500, and 1000 nm), and the human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs) were cultured on the nanopillars. The hASCs and their various behaviors, such as cytoplasmic projections, migration, and morphology, were observed by high resolution images using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). With the accurate analysis by SEM for the controlled sizes of nanopillars, the deflections are observed at pillars fabricated with 350- and 500-nm nanobeads. These high-resolution images could offer crucial information to elucidate the complicated correlations between nanopillars and the cells, such as morphology and cytoplasmic projections.

In cases where there is insufficient abdominal tissue or a history of previous abdominal surgery, thigh tissue may be considered as an alternative for reconstruction. This report discusses a case involving a 49-year-old Asian woman with thin abdominal fat and thick thigh fat, who underwent a right nipple-sparing mastectomy followed by bilateral profunda artery perforator flap breast reconstruction. The discussion will address specific considerations relevant to Asian patients preoperatively.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare neoplasms arising from mesenchymal cells. Although most SFTs are benign, rare cases of metastasis have been reported at various sites. Complete surgical resection is the mainstay of treatment for both primary and recurrent or metastatic SFTs. Herein, we present a case of an SFT initially identified in the anterior mediastinum that later developed multiple metastases, even to the thyroid gland. The patient underwent repeated surgical resection and is currently being followed up in an outpatient setting.

For women with extremely ptotic breasts, achieving optimal aesthetic outcomes with implant-based breast reconstruction following nipple-sparing mastectomy presents significant challenges. Traditional mastopexy designs may be considered; however, they often lead to nipple-areola complex necrosis due to inadequate blood supply. We propose a novel approach to breast reconstruction that involves skin de-epithelialization to minimize excess mastectomy skin flap, combined with simultaneous contralateral reduction mammoplasty. This technique effectively preserves circulation to the nipple-areola complex while delivering satisfying aesthetic results, offering a viable solution for managing the complexities associated with large, ptotic breasts in patients undergoing nipple-sparing mastectomy.

Numerical analysis of a U-type solid oxide fuel cell stack was performed using computational fluid dynamics to investigate the effects of stack capacities and fuel/air utilization rates on the internal flow uniformity. The results indicated that increasing the fuel/air utilization rate improved the gas flow uniformity within the stack for the same stack capacity. The uniformity in the anode fluid domain was better than that in the cathode fluid domain. Furthermore, the flow uniformity within the stack was associated with the percentage of pressure drop in the core region of the stack. The larger the percentage of pressure drop in the core region, the more uniform the flow inside the stack. Additionally, under a fuel utilization rate of 75%, the computational results exhibited excessively high fuel utilization rates in the top cell of a 3 kWe stack, indicating a potential risk of fuel depletion during actual stack operation.

Abstract A supplemental effect of Achyranthes aspera extract (200 mg/kg phytosterol) in diets was evaluated for Pacific white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) on growth performance, digestibility, innate immunity, antioxidant capacity, and disease resistance against Vibrio parahaemolyticus. A fish meal and soybean meal‐based control diet (Con; protein 38.0% and lipid 8.7%) was formulated and five other diets were prepared by adding A. aspera extract into Con diet to be 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 mg phytosterol/kg concentration (designated as P05, P10, P20, P40, and P80, respectively). Three replicate groups of 30 shrimp (initial body weight, 0.40 ± 0.001 g) per diet were randomly assigned into 18 acrylic tanks (240 L) and fed one of the diets for 53 days. The growth performance and feed utilization efficiency were significantly higher in shrimp fed P20 and P80 diets than in shrimp fed Con and P10 diets. The dietary phytosterol supplementation improved non‐specific immune response, antioxidant capacity, and apparent digestibility coefficients of dry matter and protein of shrimp. The IGF‐binding protein gene expression was also upregulated with dietary phytosterol supplementation. During the challenge test, the disease resistance of shrimp was significantly enhanced against V. parahaemolyticus when shrimp were fed P20 diet. These results indicate that A. aspera extract could be used as a functional feed additive for the improvements in the growth performance, feed efficiency, innate immunity, antioxidant capacity, digestibility, and disease resistance of the shrimp. The optimum dietary inclusion level of the phytosterol seems to be 0.2–0.4 mg/kg diet.

Piperine, the main bioactive component of black pepper (Piper nigrum Linn.), has anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antibacterial properties. This study evaluated the supplemental effects of piperine or black pepper on innate immunity, growth, feed utilization efficiency, and intestinal morphology in red seabream (Pagrus major). Six experimental diets were formulated, supplementing piperine at 0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 g/kg levels (Con, P25, P50, P100, and P200) or 1.0 g/kg black pepper (BP100). Juvenile fish (7.6 ± 0.1 g) were randomly stocked into 18 circular tanks (220 L), including 30 fish per tank. Each diet was randomly assigned to triplicate groups, and the feeding trial was conducted for 8 weeks. The results showed that final body weight, specific growth rate, weight gain, and feed utilization efficiency were significantly improved (p < 0.05) when piperine was supplemented into diets at 0.25–2.0 g/kg levels compared to the Con group. Compared to the Con diet, condition factor was significantly increased (p < 0.05) in fish fed with dietary piperine at 0.25–2.0 g/kg or BP100 diet. Serum myeloperoxidase activity was increased (p < 0.05) in P25 and P100 groups and antiprotease activity was increased (p < 0.05) in P100 group compared to the Con group. Significantly higher (p < 0.05) lysozyme activity was observed in P50, P100, P200 and BP100 groups, while total immunoglobulin level was increased in P50, P100 and BP100 groups than Con group. Superoxide dismutase activity was increased (p < 0.05) by dietary piperine at 0.25–2.0 g/kg levels and BP100 diet compared to Con diet. Plasma cholesterol was significantly lower (p < 0.05) in fish fed with piperine (0.5–2.0 g/kg) or BP100 compared to the Con diet. Compared to the Con diet significantly longer (p < 0.05) intestinal villi were observed in fish fed with piperine at 0.25–1.0 g/kg levels, and higher goblet cell count was observed in P25 and BP100 groups. Dietary inclusion of piperine would be a potent immunostimulant in fish diet and the optimum supplementation level would be 0.25–1.0 g/kg.

AbstractA yeast strain, designated as JAF-11T, was isolated from flower of Prunus mume Sieb. et Zucc. in Gwangyang, Republic of Korea. Phylogenetic analysis showed that strain JAF-11T was closely related to Neodothiora populina CPC 39399T with 2.07 % sequence divergence (12 nucleotide substitutions and three gaps in 581 nucleotides) in the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene, and Rhizosphaera macrospora CBS 208.79T with 4.66 % sequence divergence (25 nucleotide substitutions and five gaps in 535 nucleotides) in the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. Further analysis based on the concatenated sequences of the D1/D2 domain of the LSU rRNA gene and the ITS region confirmed that strain JAF-11T was well-separated from Neodothiora populina CPC 39399T. In addition to the phylogenetic differences, strain JAF-11T was distinguished from its closest species, Neodothiora populina CPC 39399T and Rhizosphaera macrospora CBS 208.79T belonging to the family Dothioraceae by its phenotypic characteristics, such as assimilation of carbon sources. Hence, the name Neodothiora pruni sp. nov. is proposed with type strain JAF-11T (KACC 48808T; MB 850034).

This study aims to improve the accuracy of bathymetry predicted by gravity-geologic method (GGM) using the optimal machine learning model selected from machine learning techniques. In this study, several machine learning techniques were utilized to determine the optimal model from the performance of depth and gravity anomalies. In addition, a tuning density contrast calculated from satellite altimetry-derived free-air gravity anomalies (FAGAs) was applied to estimate enhanced bathymetry. By comparison with shipborne depth, the accuracy of the bathymetry estimated by using satellite altimetry-derived FAGAs and machine learning was evaluated. The findings reveal that the bathymetry predicted by the optimal machine learning using the Gaussian process regression and the GGM with a tuning density contrast can enhance the accuracy of 82.64 m, showing an improvement of 67.40% in the RMSE at shipborne depth measurements. Although the tuning density is larger than 1.67 g/cm3, bathymetry using satellite altimetry-derived FAGAs and machine learning can be effectively improved with higher accuracy.

Rotating detonation engines (RDEs), which are Humphrey cycle-based constant-volume combustion engines, utilize detonation waves to attain higher efficiencies compared with conventional constant-pressure combustion engines through pressure gain. Such engines have garnered significant interest as future propulsion technologies, and thus, numerous research and development initiatives have been launched specific to RDEs in various forms. This paper presents a survey of research and development trends in RDE operating systems, based on experimental studies conducted worldwide since the 2010s. Additionally, a performance comparison of RDEs developed to date is presented.

A 14-year-old girl had a midfacial trauma event caused by hitting against an opening door and experienced discomfort and swelling of the columella and upper lip. Physical examination revealed mild tenderness on light palpation without any discomfort with upper lip movement. A computed tomography scan of the maxillofacial bones with three-dimensional reconstruction showed a fracture of the anterior nasal spine with obvious leftward displacement, mild-deviation of the caudal aspect of the nasal septum, and no sign of nasal bone fracture. Open reduction and internal fixation was performed with regard to aesthetic and functional concerns, including nasal septum deviation. The postoperative course was uneventful, and healing proceeded normally without complications. Herein, we emphasize the importance of differential diagnosis of isolated anterior nasal spine fractures in patients with midfacial trauma and clinicians' strategic decision-making in treatment modalities.

Black ice, a phenomenon that occurs abruptly owing to freezing rain, is difficult for drivers to identify because it mirrors the color of the road. Effectively managing the occurrence of unforeseen accidents caused by black ice requires predicting their probability using spatial, weather, and traffic factors and formulating appropriate countermeasures. Among these factors, weather and traffic exhibit the highest levels of uncertainty. To address these uncertainties, a study was conducted using a Monte Carlo simulation based on random values to predict the probability of black ice accidents at individual road points and analyze their trigger factors. We numerically modeled black ice accidents and visualized the simulation results in a geographical information system (GIS) by employing a sensitivity analysis, another feature of Monte Carlo simulations, to analyze the factors that trigger black ice accidents. The Monte Carlo simulation allowed us to map black ice accident occurrences at each road point on the GIS. The average black ice accident probability was found to be 0.0058, with a standard deviation of 0.001. Sensitivity analysis using Monte Carlo simulations identified wind speed, air temperature, and angle as significant triggers of black ice accidents, with sensitivities of 0.354, 0.270, and 0.203, respectively. We predicted the probability of black ice accidents per road section and analyzed the primary triggers of black ice accidents. The scientific contribution of this study lies in the development of a method beyond simple road temperature predictions for evaluating the risk of black ice occurrences and subsequent accidents. By employing Monte Carlo simulations, the probability of black ice accidents can be predicted more accurately through decoupling meteorological and traffic factors over time. The results can serve as a reference for government agencies, including road traffic authorities, to identify accident-prone spots and devise strategies focused on the primary triggers of black ice accidents.

Since the first receiver independent exchange format (RINEX) version was released in 1989, it has gone through several versions, making the existing software, such as TEQC, incompatible with certain later versions. This study proposes a new Python package named PyRINEX, which is developed to batch process the most generally used versions of RINEX files, namely 2.0 and 3.0. The proposed package can be used to manage and edit numerous RINEX files as well as perform a data quality check function. PyRINEX can be easily imported into any Python IDE similar to any other open-source Python package, it also makes secondary development easy for users.

The Cornus kousa tree, which is of Asian origin, is often cultivated for ornamental purposes and used in traditional medicine. The tree produces sugar-rich fruits, which are potential habitats for natural yeasts. The identification of new yeast strains has many advantages for the industry and research. This study aimed to isolate and identify yeast species from C. kousa fruits and to understand their microbial ecology. Ripe and rotten fruits, which had fallen on the ground naturally, were collected and soaked in culture media, followed by plate spreading for colony growth. The morphological examination revealed three distinct colony types, including two from the ripe fruits and one from the rotten fruits. The analysis of the internal transcribed spacer 1 region indicated three yeast strains corresponding to the three colony types: Torulaspora delbrueckii and Pichia kluyveri from the ripe fruits and Saccharomyces cerevisiae from the rotten fruits. The metabolic characterizations demonstrated that all three yeasts efficiently consumed glucose and produced alcohol. S. cerevisiae exhibited the strongest fermentation ability and the highest growth rate. These findings showed that Cornus kousa fruit is a source of diverse yeast species, with distinct species associated with different states of fruit decomposition.

Thymomas are common anterior mediastinal tumors with a relatively favorable prognosis compared to that of other types of thoracic malignancies. However, thymomas that invade surrounding structures, such as the heart or vena cava, have been infrequently reported, and intracardiac thymomas are exceedingly rare. Treatment of invasive thymoma is difficult because the high rate of incomplete resection results in a high rate of recurrence. Herein, we present a rare case of a thymoma that originated in the right atrium and extended into the superior vena cava and brachiocephalic vein.

Background: We analyzed our experience with descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM) treatment and investigated the efficacy of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for mediastinal drainage. Methods: This retrospective analysis included patients who underwent surgical drainage for DNM at our hospital from 2005 to 2020. We analyzed patients’ baseline characteristics, surgical data, and perioperative outcomes and compared them according to the mediastinal drainage approach among patients with type II DNM. Results: Twenty-five patients (male-to-female ratio, 18:7) with a mean age of 54.0±12.9 years were enrolled in this study. The most common infection sources were pharyngeal infections (60%). Most patients had significantly increased white blood cell counts, elevated C-reactive protein levels, and decreased albumin levels on admission. The most common DNM type was type IIB (n=16, 64%), while 5 and 4 patients had types I and IIA, respectively. For mediastinal drainage, the transcervical approach was used in 15 patients and the transthoracic approach (VATS) in 10 patients. The mean length of hospital stay was 26.5±23.8 days, and the postoperative morbidity and in-hospital mortality rates were 24% and 12%, respectively. No statistically significant differences were found among patients with type II DNM between the transcervical and VATS groups. However, the VATS group showed shorter mean antibiotic therapy duration, drainage duration, and hospital stay length than the transcervical group. Conclusion: DNM manifested as severe infection requiring long-term inpatient treatment, with a mortality rate of 12%. Thus, active treatment with a multidisciplinary approach is crucial, and mediastinal drainage using VATS is considered relatively safe and effective.

Abstract Worldwide, catastrophic landslides are occurring as a result of abnormal climatic conditions. Since a landslide is caused by a combination of the triggers of rainfall and the vulnerability of spatial information, a study that can suggest a method to analyze the complex relationship between the two factors is required. In this study, the relationship between complex factors (rainfall period, accumulated rainfall, and spatial information characteristics) was designed as a system dynamics model as variables to check the possibility of occurrence of vulnerable areas according to the rainfall characteristics that change in real-time. In contrast to the current way of predicting the collapse time by analysing rainfall data, the developed model can set the precipitation period during rainfall. By setting the induced rainfall period, the researcher can then assess the susceptibility of the landslide-vulnerable area. Further, because the geospatial information features and rainfall data for the 672 h before the landslide's occurrence were combined, the results of the susceptibility analysis could be determined for each topographical characteristic according to the rainfall period and cumulative rainfall change. Third, by adjusting the General cumulative rainfall period (DG) and Inter-event time definition (IETD), the preceding rainfall period can be adjusted, and desired results can be obtained. An analysis method that can solve complex relationships can contribute to the prediction of landslide warning times and expected occurrence locations.

We present 850 μ m polarization observations of the IC 348 star-forming region in the Perseus molecular cloud as part of the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observation survey. We study the magnetic properties of two cores (HH 211 MMS and IC 348 MMS) and a filamentary structure of IC 348. We find that the overall field tends to be more perpendicular than parallel to the filamentary structure of the region. The polarization fraction decreases with intensity, and we estimate the trend by power law and the mean of the Rice distribution fittings. The power indices for the cores are much smaller than 1, indicative of possible grain growth to micron size in the cores. We also measure the magnetic field strengths of the two cores and the filamentary area separately by applying the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method and its alternative version for compressed medium. The estimated mass-to-flux ratios are 0.45–2.20 and 0.63–2.76 for HH 211 MMS and IC 348 MMS, respectively, while the ratios for the filament are 0.33–1.50. This result may suggest that the transition from subcritical to supercritical conditions occurs at the core scale (∼0.05 pc) in the region. In addition, we study the energy balance of the cores and find that the relative strength of turbulence to the magnetic field tends to be stronger for IC 348 MMS than for HH 211 MMS. The result could potentially explain the different configurations inside the two cores: a single protostellar system in HH 211 MMS and multiple protostars in IC 348 MMS.

DYON is a plasma initiation modelling code that solves the differential equation system of the full circuit equations (plasma current, active coil currents and eddy currents in full passive structures) and 0D global energy and particle balance equations (Kim 2022 Nucl. Fusion 62 126012). In order to test the capability of the full electromagnetic plasma initiation model to predict individual discharges in experiments and thus the operating space in the device, a dedicated experimental database was built in MAST-U by scanning the prefilled gas pressure p _0 and the induced loop voltage $V_{\mathrm{loop}}$ . In the experimental operating space of p _0 and $V_{\mathrm{loop}}$ the lower and the upper limits of p _0 are determined by the plasma breakdown failure and the plasma burn-through failure, respectively. The lower limit of $V_{\mathrm{loop}}$ is determined by the plasma burn-through failure. By directly reading the control room data used in each discharge (i.e. currents in the solenoid, poloidal field coils, and toroidal field coils, p _0 , and gas puffing rate), the full electromagnetic DYON consistently predicted the failed breakdown, failed burn-through, and successful plasma initiation discharges in the experimental database, demonstrating its capability to predict the operating space for inductive plasma initiation. The Paschen curve calculated with the effective connection length in MAST-U indicates a much higher p _0 required for plasma breakdown than the experimental data, indicating that individual field line evaluation is necessary to calculate the quantitative requirements for Townsend breakdown. The demonstration in this paper shows that the full electromagnetic DYON could be a useful simulation tool to assess the feasibility of inductive plasma initiation and to optimise operating scenarios in future devices.

An unbiased spectral survey of V883 Ori, an eruptive young star, was carried out with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array in Band 6. The detected line emission from various molecules reveals morphological/kinematical features in both the Keplerian disk and the infalling envelope. A direct infall signature, redshifted absorption against the continuum, has been detected in CO, HCO ^+ , HCN, HNC, and H _2 CO. HCO ^+ and SO show large armlike structures that probably connect the infalling envelope to the disk. HCN and H _2 CO reveal a distinct boundary between the inner and outer disks and tentative spiral structures connecting the outer disk to the inner disk. HNC shows a large central emission hole ( r ∼ 0.″3) due to its chemical conversion to HCN at high temperatures. HDO emission, a direct tracer of the water sublimation region, has been detected in the disk. Molecular emission from complex organic molecules is confined within the HDO emission boundary, and HCO ^+ has an emission hole in its distribution due to its destruction by water. Together, these features suggest that the current episode of eruption in V883 Ori may be triggered by the infall from the envelope to the outer disk, generating a spiral wave that propagates inward and greatly enhances the accretion onto the central star.

We report 850 μ m continuum polarization observations toward the filamentary high-mass star-forming region NGC 2264, taken as part of the B -fields In STar forming Regions Observations large program on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. These data reveal a well-structured nonuniform magnetic field in the NGC 2264C and 2264D regions with a prevailing orientation around 30° from north to east. Field strength estimates and a virial analysis of the major clumps indicate that NGC 2264C is globally dominated by gravity, while in 2264D, magnetic, gravitational, and kinetic energies are roughly balanced. We present an analysis scheme that utilizes the locally resolved magnetic field structures, together with the locally measured gravitational vector field and the extracted filamentary network. From this, we infer statistical trends showing that this network consists of two main groups of filaments oriented approximately perpendicular to one another. Additionally, gravity shows one dominating converging direction that is roughly perpendicular to one of the filament orientations, which is suggestive of mass accretion along this direction. Beyond these statistical trends, we identify two types of filaments. The type I filament is perpendicular to the magnetic field with local gravity transitioning from parallel to perpendicular to the magnetic field from the outside to the filament ridge. The type II filament is parallel to the magnetic field and local gravity. We interpret these two types of filaments as originating from the competition between radial collapsing, driven by filament self-gravity, and longitudinal collapsing, driven by the region's global gravity.

Silicone granulomas are rare, benign lesions that may occur after breast augmentation. Occasionally, a careful differential diagnosis is necessary because lymphadenopathy or malignancy is suspected based on an imaging study. A 56-year-old woman who visited the hospital due to a lung nodule in the left upper lobe (LUL) underwent a staging work-up with the suspicion of lung cancer. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography and chest computed tomography revealed the LUL nodule and a lesion in the left internal mammary chain (IMC), suggesting lymphadenopathy. Diagnostic wedge resection was performed, followed by curative surgery. The final biopsy result confirmed that the LUL nodule was pathologic stage IB adenocarcinoma; unexpectedly, the lesion in the left IMC was a silicone granuloma.

Piperine is a phytobiotic and a polyphenol-derived alkaloid compound extracted from the pepper. We evaluated the effects of dietary piperine on growth, feed utilization, innate immunity, digestibility and disease resistance of Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. A control (Con) diet was formulated without piperine, and five other diets were prepared by supplementing graded piperine (purity 10 %) levels of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 g/kg (P25, P50, P100, P200 and P400, respectively) to Con diet. Triplicate groups of shrimp were fed one of the diets four times daily for 53 days. A challenge test was conducted with Vibrio parahaemolyticus after the feeding trial. Growth performance, feed utilization and IGF-BP mRNA expression were significantly improved by the dietary supplementation of piperine. The dietary piperine supplementation significantly improved the non-specific immune responses and antioxidant status of shrimp. Protein, lipid and dry matter digestibility of the diets were significantly increased by piperine. The disease resistance of shrimp was also significantly enhanced against V. parahaemolyticus when fed P25 or P100 diets. Based on quadratic regression analysis, the optimal dietary piperine level was estimated to be 2.2 g/kg in diet. Therefore, these results indicate that piperine can be used as a feed additive to improve the growth, feed utilization, immunity, digestibility and disease resistance of Pacific white shrimp.

Lindera obtusiloba Blume has several activities, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-tumor, anti-wrinkle, and antioxidant activities. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a classic pro-inflammatory cytokine that is associated with various functions, such as proliferation, invasion, inflammatory responses and functions within antioxidant defense systems. In this study, we investigated IL-6-induced STAT3 activation of lignan compounds isolated from L. obtusiloba. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated via spectroscopic nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). As a result, seven lignans were identified from L. obtusiloba. All the isolated compounds (1–7) were evaluated for their IL-6-induced STAT3 inhibitory effects in Hep3B cells using a luciferase reporter assay. Of the isolates, compounds 1 and 5 showed inhibitory effects against IL-6-stimulated STAT3 activation. Furthermore, the mRNA expression levels of inflammation-related genes such as CRP, IL-1b, and SOCS3 were significantly reduced by exposure to compounds 1 and 5. The protein levels of p-STAT3 and p-JAK2 in IL-6-induced U266 cells were regulated in the presence of lignans derived from Lindera obtusiloba by Western blot assay. Based on the results, this study of L. obtusiloba demonstrates that the species has promise as a bioactive candidate for the treatment of IL-6-induced STAT3-related disease.

Abstract Background This study aimed to confirm the effectiveness of thoracoscopic metastasectomy for colorectal cancer (CRC) and determine its prognostic factors. Methods Of the 181 patients who underwent video‐assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for pulmonary metastases from CRC between 2011 and 2017, 173 were retrospectively reviewed. Surgical outcomes, long‐term survival, and the factors affecting the prognosis were analyzed. Results The patients in the study were predominantly male (n = 104, 60.1%), and the median age was 65 years (range, 25–83 years). The median follow‐up time was 46 months (range, 0–114 months). The surgical procedures were 156 wedge resections, five segmentectomies, and 12 lobectomies. Conversion to thoracotomy was required in nine patients. The postoperative complication rate was 2.9%, and the in‐hospital mortality rate was 1.2%. The overall 1‐, 3‐, and 5‐year survival rates were 94.8%, 70.6%, and 51.8%, respectively. Univariate analysis showed that the prognostic factors for survival were age (p = 0.027), pathological stage of CRC (p = 0.019), prior extrathoracic metastasis (p = 0.005), preoperative carcinoembryonic antigen level (p = 0.020), number of pulmonary metastases (p = 0.011), and disease‐free interval (p = 0.026). In the multivariate analysis, two factors were related to prognosis: age (hazard ratio [HR], 1.881; 95% confidence interval [CI]; 1.189–2.976; p = 0.007) and prior extrathoracic metastasis (HR, 2.170; 95% CI; 1.269–3.711; p = 0.005). Conclusions VATS for pulmonary metastasectomy for CRC can be performed relatively safely, and our results regarding long‐term survival are comparable with those of other studies. In this study, older age (≥70 years) and prior extrathoracic metastasis were independent prognostic factors of poor prognosis.

Microbes are essential in biofloc technology for controlling nitrogen levels in water. The composition and function of microorganisms with biofloc systems were reported; however, data on microorganisms other than bacteria, such as algae (which are essential in the nitrogen cycle) and zooplankton (which are bacterial and algal predators), remain limited. The microbial communities (including bacteria, algae, zooplankton, and fungi) were investigated in shrimp farms using biofloc technology. Using Illumina MiSeq sequencing, the V4 region of 18S rRNA and the V3–V4 region of 16S rRNA were utilized for the analysis of the eukaryotic and prokaryotic microbial communities. As a result, it was found that the biofloc in the shrimp farm consisted of 48.73%–73.04% eukaryotic organisms and 26.96%–51.27% prokaryotic organisms. In these shrimp farms, prokaryotic microbial communities had higher specie richness and diversity than eukaryotic microbial communities. However, the eukaryotic microbial communities were more abundant than their prokaryotic counterparts, while algae and zooplankton dominated them. It was discovered that the structures of the microbial communities in the shrimp farms seemed to depend on the effects of predation by zooplankton and other related organisms. The results provided the nitrogen cycle in biofloc systems by the algal and bacterial groups in microbial communities.

In our ongoing search for new secondary metabolites from fungi, a basidiomycete fungus Irpex consors was selected for mycochemical investigation, and three new zwitterionic alkaloids (1-3) and five known compounds (4-8) were isolated from the culture broth (16 l) of I. consors. The culture filtrate was fractionated by a series of column chromatography including Diaion HP-20, silica gel, and Sephadex LH-20, Sep-Pak C18 cartridge, medium pressure liquid chromatography (MPLC), and high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) to yield eight compounds (1-8). The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by the interpretation of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS). Their antioxidant and antibacterial activities were examined. The zwitterionic structures of three new sesquiterpene alkaloids (1-3) were determined together with five known compounds identified as stereumamide E (4), stereumamide G (5), stereumamide H (6), stereumamide D (7), and sterostrein H (8). This is the first report of the zwitterionic alkaloids in the culture broth of I. consors. Three new zwitterionic alkaloids were named as consoramides A–C (1-3).

Tracheo-innominate artery fistula (TIF) is a rare, life-threatening complication of tracheostomy that makes it difficult to secure the airway due to massive bleeding, constituting a medical emergency. Therefore, most successful surgical treatments include innominate artery debridement and tracheal fistula repair. Herein, we report a case of successful surgical treatment of a TIF while maintaining cerebral blood flow through an artificial vascular graft.

In our ongoing search for new secondary metabolites from fungal strains, one novel compound (1) and nine known compounds (2-10) were isolated from the EtOAc-soluble layer of the culture broth of Panus rudis. The culture broth of P. rudis was extracted in acetone and fractionated by solvent partition; column chromatography using silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, and Sephadex G-10; MPLC; and HPLC. The structures of isolated compounds were elucidated by one- and two-dimensional NMR and LC-ESI-mass measurements. One new compound, panepoxydiol (1), and nine known compounds, (E)-3-(3-hydroxy-3-methylbut-1-en-1-yl)-7-oxabicyclo[4.1.0]hept-3-ene-2,5-diol (2), isopanepoxydone (3), neopanepoxydone (4), panepoxydone (5), panepophenanthrin (6), 4-hydroxy-2,2-dimethyl-6-methoxychromane (7), 6-hydroxy-2,2-dimethyl-3-chromen (8), 2,2-dimethyl-6-methoxychroman-4-one (9), 3,4-dihydroxy-2,2-dimethyl-6-methoxychromane (10), were isolated from the culture broth of P. rudis. This is the first report of isolation of a new compound panepoxydiol (1) and nine other chemical constituents (2-5, 7-10) from the culture broth of P. rudis.

Purpose: External ear reconstruction has been a challenging subject for plastic surgeons for decades. Popular methods using autologous costal cartilage or polyethylene still have their drawbacks. With the advance of three-dimensional (3D) printing technique, bioscaffold engineering using synthetic polymer draws attention as an alternative. This is a clinical trial of ear reconstruction using 3D printed scaffold, presented with clinical results after 1 year. Materials and Methods: From 2021 to 2022, five adult patients with unilateral microtia underwent two-staged total ear reconstruction using 3D printed implants. For each patient, a patient-specific 3D printed scaffold was designed and produced with polycaprolactone (PCL) based on computed tomography images, using fused deposition modeling. Computed tomography scan was obtained preoperatively, within 2 weeks following the surgery and after 1 year, to compare the volume of the normal side and the reconstructed ear. At 1-year visit, clinical photo was taken for scoring by two surgeons and patients themselves. Results: All five patients had completely healed reconstructed ear at 1-year follow-up. On average, the volume of reconstructed ear was 161.54% of that of the normal side ear. In a range of 0 to 10, objective assessors gave scores 3 to 6, whereas patients gave scores 8 to 10. Conclusion: External ear reconstruction using 3D printed PCL implant showed durable, safe results reflected by excellent volume restoration and patient satisfaction at 1 year postoperatively. Further clinical follow-up with more cases and refinement of scaffold with advancing bioprinting technique is anticipated. Background: Auricle reconstruction is among the most challenging procedures in plastic and reconstructive surgery, and the choice of framework material is a critical decision for both surgeons and patients. This meta-analysis compared the outcomes of autologous auricle reconstruction using costal cartilage with those of alloplastic reconstruction using porous polyethylene implants. Methods: A literature review was conducted using the PubMed and Embase databases to retrieve articles published between January 2000 and June 2024. The outcomes analyzed included postoperative complications such as framework exposure, infection, skin necrosis, hematoma, and hypertrophic scars, as well as patient satisfaction. The proportions of reconstructive outcomes from each selected study were statistically analyzed using the “metaprop” function in R software. Results: Fourteen articles met our inclusion criteria. The group undergoing polyethylene implant reconstruction exhibited higher rates of framework exposure, infection, and skin necrosis, whereas the autologous reconstruction group experienced higher rates of hematoma and hypertrophic scars. Of all the complications, framework exposure was the only one to show a statistically significant difference between the two groups (p< 0.0001). In terms of patient satisfaction, those who underwent autologous cartilage reconstruction reported a higher rate of satisfaction, although this difference did not reach statistical significance in the meta-analysis (p= 0.076). Conclusion: There is no statistically significant difference in postoperative complications such as infection, hematoma, skin necrosis, and hypertrophic scars between auricle reconstructions using autologous costal cartilage and those using polyethylene implants. Background The early diagnosis and treatment of skin and soft tissue infections caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are important, especially as infections with rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM) are rare and difficult to diagnose and treat. Recently, we identified 22 cases of NTM infections; in this study, we suggest treatment strategies by analyzing the demographic characteristics and treatment progress of these patients. Methods A retrospective study of patients with NTM infections from 2009 to 2019 was conducted. To identify NTM infections, acid-fast bacillus (AFB) staining, Gram staining, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and cultures of mycobacteria were performed. Empirical treatment with a combination of antibiotics or surgery was performed; species identification and drug susceptibility tests were performed by the Korean National Tuberculosis Association. The final regimen was determined after obtaining the test results. Results The mean incubation time of NTM was 4.32±2.88 weeks. RGM were detected in mycobacterial cultures in 21 of the 22 NTM patients. The results of AFB staining were negative in all patients, although PCR was positive for NTM in one patient. Fourteen patients were hospitalized for treatment with intravenous antibiotics and surgery. Treatment with a combined regimen of oral antibiotics was maintained for a mean of 5.41±1.85 months. Conclusions The unusual clinical manifestations of skin and soft tissue infections caused by NTM make them difficult to diagnose. Suspicion of NTM based on clinical presentation and a detailed examination should be followed by proper treatment involving multiple antibiotics and surgery in these patients.

Various indigenous yeasts were isolated and obtained from flowers in the Republic of Korea, and their distribution and species diversity were studied. Seventy-seven flowers were collected from 25 areas in Korea, and 502 yeast strains were isolated from these flowers. A total of 50 species were identified by comparing large subunit rDNA gene sequence homology with the type strains of yeasts. The analysis of yeast distribution showed that the dominant yeast species were Aureobasidium pullulans, A. leucospermi, and Filobasidium magnum in each region and flower samples. Except for the above three yeast species, no species of yeasts showed any meaningful distribution among the habitat regions and sources. In conclusion, 50 species of indigenous yeasts were obtained from flowers that can be used as industrial resources, and the data could be used for further research on yeast diversity and interactions between yeast and its host.

The immature fruits of Poncirus trifoliate are used as a medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, inflammation, and allergies in East Asia. However, their effect on colon cancer cells remains unclear. We investigated the effect of the immature fruit of P. trifoliate extract on colorectal adenocarcinoma. The extract of the immature fruit of P. trifoliata inhibited the proliferation of CT-26 cells compared with untreated cells and it induced autophagy and apoptosis through the protein kinase B/mammalian target of rapamycin and 5′-AMP-activated protein kinase pathways. The number of autophagic vacuoles and autophage markers increased in response to the extract. At later time-points, apoptosis increased dose/time-dependently. In CT-26 cells pre-treated a pan-caspase inhibitor prior to P. trifoliata immature fruit extract treatment, we did not find any change in pro-caspase 3 and pro-PARP levels. Additionally, in cells pre-treated autphage inhibitor, SQSTM1/p62 and LC3AB, pro-caspase 3 and pro-PARP levels did not change. Our results indicate the molecular mechanisms that the extract of the immature fruit of P. trifoliata induces apoptosis in colorectal carcinoma cells by inducing mitochondrial autophagy. In this study, we provided a draft for further investigate the use of MEPT for colorectal cancer inhibition.

We evaluated the effects of supplementing an emulsifier blend (sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate and 1, 3-diacylglycerol) in diets with different energy content (normal and 100 kcal/kg reduced) on the growth performance, meat quality, apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD), and blood lipid profile of broiler chickens. Male broiler chickens (n = 1024), with an initial body weight (BW) of 43.60±0.2 g, were used in a 35-day trial. Broiler chickens of similar body weight were randomly allocated to one of four treatment groups in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with two levels of dietary energy content and with or without emulsifier blend. Broiler chickens fed on emulsifier blend supplemented diet had a higher body weight gain (BWG) during d 7–21, d 21–35, and overall period (P0.10) were observed on the growth performance, ATTD, blood lipid profiles, meat quality and relative organ weight. In conclusion, dietary emulsifier blend supplementation could improve growth performance, while low dietary energy content would decrease growth performance and ATTD of energy.

A variety of interstellar complex organic molecules (COMs) have been detected in various physical conditions. However, in the protostellar and protoplanetary environments, their complex kinematics make line profiles blend together and the line strength of weak lines weaker. In this paper, we utilize the principal component analysis technique to develop a filtering method that can extract COM spectra from the main kinematic component associated with COM emission and increase the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of spectra. This filtering method corrects non-Gaussian line profiles caused by the kinematics. For this development, we adopt the ALMA BAND 6 spectral survey data of V883 Ori, an eruptive young star with a Keplerian disk. A filter was, first, created using 34 strong and well-isolated COM lines and then applied to the entire spectral range of the data set. The first principal component (PC1) describes the most common emission structure of the selected lines, which is confined within the water sublimation radius (∼0.″3) in the Keplerian disk of V883 Ori. Using this PC1 filter, we extracted high-S/N kinematics-corrected spectra of V883 Ori over the entire spectral coverage of ∼50 GHz. The PC1-filtering method reduces the noise by a factor of ∼2 compared to the average spectra over the COM emission region. One important advantage of this PC1-filtering method over the previously developed matched-filtering method is the ability to preserve the original integrated intensities of COM lines.

The star-forming region W5 is a major part of the Cassiopeia OB6 association. Its internal structure and kinematics may provide hints of the star formation process in this region. Here, we present a kinematic study of young stars in W5 using the Gaia data and our radial velocity data. A total 490 out of 2000 young stars are confirmed as members. Their spatial distribution shows that W5 is highly substructured. We identify a total of eight groups using the k -means clustering algorithm. There are three dense groups in the cavities of H ii bubbles, and the other five sparse groups are distributed at the edges of the bubbles. The three dense groups have almost the same age (5 Myr) and show a pattern of expansion. The scale of their expansion is not large enough to account for the overall structure of W5. The three northern groups are, in fact, 3 Myr younger than the dense groups, which indicates independent star formation events. Only one of these groups shows the signature of feedback-driven star formation as its members move away from the eastern dense group. The other two groups might have formed in a spontaneous way. On the other hand, the properties of two southern groups are not understood as those of a coeval population. Their origins can be explained by dynamical ejection of stars and multiple star formation. Our results suggest that the substructures in W5 formed through multiple star-forming events in a giant molecular cloud.

We present observations of polarized dust emission at 850 μ m from the L43 molecular cloud, which sits in the Ophiuchus cloud complex. The data were taken using SCUBA-2/POL-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope as a part of the BISTRO large program. L43 is a dense ( ${N}_{{{\rm{H}}}_{2}}\sim {10}^{22}$ –10 ^23 cm ^−2 ) complex molecular cloud with a submillimeter-bright starless core and two protostellar sources. There appears to be an evolutionary gradient along the isolated filament that L43 is embedded within, with the most evolved source closest to the Sco OB2 association. One of the protostars drives a CO outflow that has created a cavity to the southeast. We see a magnetic field that appears to be aligned with the cavity walls of the outflow, suggesting interaction with the outflow. We also find a magnetic field strength of up to ∼160 ± 30 μ G in the main starless core and up to ∼90 ± 40 μ G in the more diffuse, extended region. These field strengths give magnetically super- and subcritical values, respectively, and both are found to be roughly trans-Alfvénic. We also present a new method of data reduction for these denser but fainter objects like starless cores.

We study the H ii regions associated with the NGC 6334 molecular cloud observed in the submillimeter and taken as part of the B -fields In STar-forming Region Observations Survey. In particular, we investigate the polarization patterns and magnetic field morphologies associated with these H ii regions. Through polarization pattern and pressure calculation analyses, several of these bubbles indicate that the gas and magnetic field lines have been pushed away from the bubble, toward an almost tangential (to the bubble) magnetic field morphology. In the densest part of NGC 6334, where the magnetic field morphology is similar to an hourglass, the polarization observations do not exhibit observable impact from H ii regions. We detect two nested radial polarization patterns in a bubble to the south of NGC 6334 that correspond to the previously observed bipolar structure in this bubble. Finally, using the results of this study, we present steps (incorporating computer vision; circular Hough transform) that can be used in future studies to identify bubbles that have physically impacted magnetic field lines.

We present BISTRO Survey 850 μ m dust emission polarization observations of the L1495A-B10 region of the Taurus molecular cloud, taken at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). We observe a roughly triangular network of dense filaments. We detect nine of the dense starless cores embedded within these filaments in polarization, finding that the plane-of-sky orientation of the core-scale magnetic field lies roughly perpendicular to the filaments in almost all cases. We also find that the large-scale magnetic field orientation measured by Planck is not correlated with any of the core or filament structures, except in the case of the lowest-density core. We propose a scenario for early prestellar evolution that is both an extension to, and consistent with, previous models, introducing an additional evolutionary transitional stage between field-dominated and matter-dominated evolution, observed here for the first time. In this scenario, the cloud collapses first to a sheet-like structure. Uniquely, we appear to be seeing this sheet almost face on. The sheet fragments into filaments, which in turn form cores. However, the material must reach a certain critical density before the evolution changes from being field dominated to being matter dominated. We measure the sheet surface density and the magnetic field strength at that transition for the first time and show consistency with an analytical prediction that had previously gone untested for over 50 yr.

In the past, biomass production using microalgae culture was dependent on inorganic carbon sources as microalgae are photosynthetic organisms. However, microalgae utilize both organic and inorganic carbon sources, such as glucose. Glucose is an excellent source of organic carbon that enhances biomass yield and the content of useful substances in microalgae. In this study, photoautotrophic, mixotrophic, and heterotrophic cultivation conditions were applied to three well-known strains of Chlorella (KNUA104, KNUA114, and KNUA122) to assess biomass productivity, and compositional changes (lipid, protein, and pigment) were evaluated in BG11 media under photoautotrophic, mixotrophic, and heterotrophic conditions utilizing different initial concentrations of glucose (5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 g L−1). Compared to the photoautotrophic condition (biomass yield: KNUA104, 0.35 ± 0.04 g/L/d; KNUA114, 0.40 ± 0.08 g/L/d; KNUA122, 0.38 ± 0.05 g/L/d) glucose was absent, and the biomass yield improved in the mixotrophic (glucose: 20 g L−1; biomass yield: KNUA104, 2.99 ± 0.10 g/L/d; KNUA114, 5.18 ± 0.81 g/L/d; KNUA122, 5.07 ± 0.22 g/L/d) and heterotrophic conditions (glucose: 20 g L−1; biomass yield: KNUA104, 1.72 ± 0.26 g/L/d; KNUA114, 4.26 ± 0.27 g/L/d; KNUA122, 4.32 ± 0.32 g/L/d). All strains under mixotrophic and heterotrophic conditions were optimally cultured when 15–20 g L−1 initial glucose was provided. Although bioresourse productivity improved under both mixotrophic and heterotrophic conditions where mixotrophic conditions were found to be optimal as the yields of lipid and pigment were also enhanced. Protein content was less affected by the presence of light or the concentration of glucose. Under mixotrophic conditions, the highest lipid content (glucose: 15 g L−1; lipid content: 68.80 ± 0.54%) was obtained with Chlorella vulgaris KNUA104, and enhanced pigment productivity of Chlorella sorokiniana KNUA114 and KNUA122 (additional pigment yield obtained with 15 g L−1 glucose: KNUA 114, 0.33 ± 0.01 g L−1; KNUA122, 0.21 ± 0.01 g L−1). Also, saturated fatty acid (SFA) content was enhanced in all strains (SFA: KNUA104, 29.76 ± 1.31%; KNUA114, 37.01 ± 0.98%; KNUA122, 33.37 ± 0.17%) under mixotrophic conditions. These results suggest that mixotrophic cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris and Chlorella sorokiniana could improve biomass yield and the raw material quality of biomass.
