Volcanoes in extensional environments may show gradual subsidence over decades during quiescent periods, due to various processes such as magma withdrawal, cooling, contraction, plate spreading and viscoelastic response. If significant rheological anomalies reside in volcano roots, due to the presence of magma and hot rock, they can influence the style of deformation. We use Finite Element Method (FEM) models to explore how strain localization due to extension can lead to volcano deflation. We apply rheological models comprising an elastic layer overlying a viscoelastic domain and include local up‐doming regions of low viscosity material beneath volcanic centers. The models reveal a localized subsidence above the rheological anomaly, influenced by the tectonic extension, and by the up‐doming volume and its viscosity. The models suggest that plate divergence may account for 4–5 mm/yr of observed subsidence at Krafla and Askja volcanic systems (KVS and AVS, respectively) in North Iceland. Plain Language Summary: Extensional stretching may have an important effect on the ground deformation observed at volcanic systems located along a divergent boundary. The physical properties of the crust are altered by the presence of hot material and/or geothermal activity at central volcanoes, compared to the surrounding rocks. We use a two‐layer model consisting of an elastic crustal volume overlying a viscoelastic layer, which locally reaches shallower depth (referred to up‐doming material), to investigate such crustal properties beneath volcanic systems. We explore a wide range of viscosity values in the up‐doming material and elastic layer thickness. The models, applied to investigate observed ground deformation at the Krafla and Askja volcanic systems, suggests that regional stretching with realistic material properties in the crust beneath the volcanic system, fits quite well the observed deformation satellite data at Krafla volcanic system in the 2015–2018 observations, but only a minor contributor to the Askja deformation pattern in the same period. Our modeling approach suggests that any extensive magmatic system undergoing stretching should feature subsidence in relation to the presence of hot material/magma mush beneath volcanic systems. On 22 May 2021, an earthquake (98.3° E and 34.59° N) struck Maduo town in Qinghai province, occurring along a relatively obscure secondary fault within the block. We utilized 105 archived Sentinel-1A/B acquisitions to investigate the coseismic deformation and the evolution of postseismic displacements in both the temporal and spatial domains, as well as the associated dynamic mechanisms of the 2021 Maduo earthquake. The interference fringes and coseismic deformation revealed that the primary feature of this event was the rupture along a left-lateral strike-slip fault. The released seismic moment was close to 1.88 ×   10 20   N · m , which is equivalent to an Mw 7.45 event. Simultaneously, the maximum coseismic slip reached approximately 4 m along the fault plane. The evolution of postseismic displacements in both the temporal and spatial domains over 450 days following the mainshock was further analyzed to explore the underlying physical mechanisms. Generally, the patterns of coseismic slip and afterslip were similar, although the postseismic displacements decayed rapidly over time. The modeled afterslip downdip of the coseismic rupture (at depths of 15–40 km) effectively explains the postseismic deformation, with a released moment estimated at 4.57 ×   10 19   N · m (corresponding to Mw 7.04). Additionally, we found that regions with high coseismic slip tend to exhibit weak seismicity, and that afterslip and aftershocks are likely driven by each other. Finally, we estimated the Coulomb Failure Stress changes ( Δ C F S ) triggered by both coseismic rupture and aseismic slip resulting from this event. The co- and postseismic Δ C F S show similar patterns, but the magnitude of the postseismic Δ C F S is much lower ( ≤ 0.01 MPa). We found that Δ C F S notably increased on the Yushu segment of the Garze-Yushu-Xianshuihe Fault (GYXF), as well as the Maqin–Maqu and Tuosuo Lake sections of the East Kunlun Fault (EKF). The 2015 Mw 7.8 Gorkha, Nepal, earthquake produced a ∼ 140 km rupture on the Main Himalaya Thrust (MHT) fault at the convergence zone of the Indian and Eurasian plates. The coseismic surface deformation, fault slip model and induced stress change are comprehensively investigated with the geodetic observations in this study. The surface deformation is mapped by the combination of the GPS observations with the descending and ascending track ALOS-2/PALSAR-2 SAR images. An improved forward modeling of the surface displacement considering the effect of topographic variation on the geodetic data inversion is developed, and applied to determine the fault geometry and slip distribution associated with the event. The derived faulting model shows that the thrusting motion occurs on a fault plane with a low dip of ∼6.2∘, and the significant slip concentrates at depths of 5-13 km. More than 90% of the seismic moment is released on the middle fault segment with a maximum slip of ∼ 6.7 m. Two significant slip deficit zones located on the northwest and southeast of the fault are recognized from the source model. The shallow portion of the Main Frontal Thrust fault with little slip during the event is considered as the lower edge of the locked zone, which plays an important role in accommodating the convergence between the Eurasia and India plates. The change in Coulomb failure stress shows a significant increase for the slip deficits and the locked zone on the Himalayan front, which indicates that the accumulated strain on the MHT fault has been partially alleviated by the major quake and the aftershock sequence, but will continue to balance the slip deficit and high stress regimes, and drive the seismicity in the Himalayan front. The Yellow River Delta, which is the second-largest delta in China, has experienced varying degrees of land subsidence since the late 1970s. Although recent studies have identified the natural consolidation and compaction of sediment among the most important contributors to geologic processes, their processes have rarely been quantified. We estimated the sediment compaction over different time ranges to determine the temporal evolution of subsidence parameters (i.e., cumulative compaction). Estimates of primary consolidation, secondary consolidation, and the degree of consolidation in 152 boreholes revealed the spatial–temporal characteristics of sediment compaction and consolidation using geotechnical parameters collected from 152 boreholes, soil mechanics equations and the Kriging interplolation method. In addition, these estimates were partially constrained and cross-validated using the interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) results from early 2007 to late 2010 which were provided in a previous study. By performing a comparison analysis between theoretical evaluations of compaction for borehole data and InSAR observations, we were able to quantify subsidence due to sediment compaction. The comparison results suggest that the theoretical solutions agreed well with the measurements recorded by the well-validated, advanced InSAR method and that the deviations between the InSAR technique and geotechnical evaluations ranged from −22 to 3 mm. The results reveal that the land subsidence of the chosen borehole sites during the investigative period was dominated by the primary consolidation and compaction of sediment. The underprediction of subsidence may be explained by fluid withdrawal, oil exploitation and engineering construction.
