Estimates of income levels and income inequality in the United States in 1988, 1995, and 1999 are presented based on a dataset created by a statistical match of Internal Revenue Service and decennial Census data. An increase of 8.5% in adjusted gross income and an increase of 9.6% in taxable income, both better than three times the inflation rate of 2.3%, are reflected in early data for tax year 1997. Total income tax was $594.1 billion, up by 10.2%. Electronic filing of returns increased by 28.3% to account for 21.6% of the total returns. Early estimates are based on individual returns filed through April 1998.

Research has revealed that the probability of exiting a spell of low income is related to the length of time spent in low income situations. The number of children, age, sex and marital status are also all relevant factors. Single parent families tend to spend longer periods below the low income threshold, and are also more prone to re-enter a period of low income. The Statistic Canada Longitudinal Administrative Databank was used for the research.

Adjusted gross income (minus deficit) on U.S. individual income tax returns totaled $4.5 trillion for tax year 1996, an increase of 8.3% over the previous year, with 120.4 million returns filed. The average tax rate was 14.5%, up 0.5%. An increase of 5.5% occurred in salaries and wages, while taxable pensions and annuities increased by 8.0%. Total deductions increased by 4.1% to $979.6 billion, and taxable income was $3.1 trillion, up by 9.8%. Earned income credit totaled $28.8 billion, an increase of 11.1%.

The purchasing power of independent dentists has increased more rapidly than in the general population. An independent dentist is one who owns or shares the ownership of a dental practice. According to the American Dental Association's Survey of Dental Practice, between 1986 and 1995 the average net income of all independent dentists increased 30.7%, or 2.7% per year. The average net income of generalists increased 26.4% during this time, while the net income of specialists increased 40.9%. Expenses rose only 15% to 18% during this period.

Taxable income, tax liability and number of individual returns filed all increased in 1996. Total taxable income rose to $3.1 billion, 10.6% over 1995 amounts. Total tax liability increased by 13% over the prior year to reach $661.1 billion. Individual returns filed for 1996 numbered 120.6 million, up 2.1% from 1995. Tax deduction amounts rose by 6.4%, totaling $991.4 billion for the year.

An analysis of the finances of all 125 accredited US medical schools is presented. Total revenues exceeded $31 billion in the 1995-96 school year, up about 5% from the previous year after adjusting for inflation. Revenue from tuition and fees increased 4.4% after inflation and funding from state and local governments increased by 1.6% after inflation. Much of the growth comes from clinical revenues, since the number of full-time clinical faculty increased 6% that year. Federal research grant payments rose 6.2% after inflation. About one-fourth of clinical revenues comes from Medicare/Medicaid., For the 1995-1996 fiscal year, all 125accredited US medical schools responded to the annual medical school questionnaire of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, part I-A. Using data from the financial portion of the questionnaire, we identify patterns of financing medical education during the past 3 years and the practice plan arrangements adopted by medical schools, including their organizational and legal structures. This financial review details differences in how public and private medical schools are being funded and funding changes during the past 3 years. The reported data show that revenues supporting medical school programs and activities totaled more than $31 billion in 1995-1996, an increase of 5.4% in inflation-adjusted dollars during the previous year. Compared with the previous year, revenues, in current and constant dollars, increased in almost every category in 1995-1996.

The regional economic performance of US states and regions was analyzed by utilizing time-series techniques for economic convergence. The relative per capita earnings in US states and regions exhibited decreasing stochastic convergence after the end of World War II. However, US states such as New England, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine exhibited temporary downward stochastic divergence in per capita earnings from 1929 to 1978.
