Shellfishes are a significant economic and nutritious seafood amongst people in different countries. Seafood products, particularly shellfish, are potential reservoirs of enteric viruses. This research investigated the incidence of rotavirus (RoV), norovirus (NoV) GI and GII, hepatitis A virus (HAV), and hepatitis E virus (HEV) in shellfish samples from the Persian Gulf, Iran. One hundred and fifty shellfish samples were collected. RNA extraction and cDNA synthesis were performed using commercial kits. The real-time polymerase chain reaction assessed the presence of enteric viruses in extracted cDNA samples. Thirty-two out of 150 (21.33%) shellfish samples were contaminated with enteric viruses. Prevalence rates of NoV GI, NoV GII, HAV, and RoV amongst shellfish samples were 8.00%, 11.33%, 1.33%, and 0.66%, respectively. There were no contaminated shellfish samples with HEV. Simultaneous prevalence of HAV and NoV GI, and HAV and NoV GII viruses were 0.66% and 0.66%, respectively. Examined viruses had a higher prevalence in shellfish samples collected in the winter season ( P <0.05). Prevalence of HAV, RoV, NoV GI, and NoV GII amongst shellfish samples gathered in the winter season was 2.85%, 9.09%, 11.90%, and 20%, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this was the first report of the incidence of enteric viruses, particularly HAV, NoV GI, NoV GII, and RoV, in shellfish samples from the Persian Gulf, Iran. Shellfish samples may serve as a potential source of enteric viruses for the human population. Therefore, routine viral assessments should be conducted. The consumption of fully cooked shellfish can significantly reduce the risk of HAV, RoV, NoV GI, and NoV GII infections. Dual resistance to colistin and carbapenems is a milestone reached by certain extensively-drug resistant (XDR) Gram-negative bacteria. This study describes the first outbreak of XDR colistin- and carbapenem-resistant OXA-23-/NDM-1-producing Acinetobacter baumannii (CCRAB) in the European overseas territory of Reunion Island (France, Indian Ocean). Between April 2019 and June 2020, 13 patients admitted to the University Hospital of Reunion Island were involved in the outbreak, of whom eight were infected and six died. The first case was traced to a medical evacuation from Mayotte Island (Comoros archipelago). An epidemiological link could be established for 11 patients. All of the collected CCRAB isolates showed the same resistance profile and co-produced intrinsic β-lactamases OXA-69 and ADC-191, together with acquired carbapenem-hydrolysing β-lactamases OXA-23 and NDM-1. A mutation likely involved in colistin resistance was detected in the two-component system PmrAB (D82N in PmrA). All of the isolates were found to belong to ST Pas 1/ST Ox 231 clonal complex and were phylogenetically indistinguishable. Their further characterization by whole-genome sequence analyses (whole-genome multi-locus sequence typing, single nucleotide polymorphisms) provided hints about the transmission pathways. Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite that uses felids as definitive hosts and warm-blooded animals as intermediate hosts. While the dispersal of T. gondii infectious oocysts from land to coastal waters has been well documented, transmission routes to pelagic species remain puzzling. We used the modified agglutination test (MAT titre ≥ 10) to detect antibodies against T. gondii in sera collected from 1014 pelagic seabirds belonging to 10 species. Sampling was carried out on eight islands of the Western Indian Ocean: Reunion and Juan de Nova (colonized by cats), Cousin, Cousine, Aride, Bird, Europa and Tromelin islands (cat-free). Antibodies against T. gondii were found in all islands and all species but the great frigatebird. The overall seroprevalence was 16.8% [95% CI: 14.5%-19.1%] but significantly varied according to species, islands and age-classes. The low antibody levels (MAT titres = 10 or 25) detected in one shearwater and three red-footed booby chicks most likely resulted from maternal antibody transfer. In adults, exposure to soils contaminated by locally deposited oocysts may explain the detection of antibodies in both wedge-tailed shearwaters on Reunion Island and sooty terns on Juan de Nova. However, 144 adults breeding on cat-free islands also tested positive. In the Seychelles, there was a significant decrease in T. gondii prevalence associated with greater distances to cat populations for species that sometimes rest on the shore, i.e. terns and noddies. This suggests that oocysts carried by marine currents could be deposited on shore tens of kilometres from their initial deposition point and that the number of deposited oocysts decreases with distance from the nearest cat population. The consumption of fishes from the families Mullidae, Carangidae, Clupeidae and Engraulidae, previously described as T. gondii oocyst-carriers (i.e. paratenic hosts), could also explain the exposure of terns, noddies, boobies and tropicbirds to T. gondii. Our detection of antibodies against T. gondii in seabirds that fish in the high sea, have no contact with locally contaminated soils but frequent the shores and/or consume paratenic hosts supports the hypothesis of an open-sea dispersal of T. gondii oocysts by oceanic currents and/or fish., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interest exist.

Stonefish are regarded as one of the most venomous fish in the world. Research on stonefish venom has chiefly focused on the in vitro and in vivo neurological, cardiovascular, cytotoxic and nociceptive effects of the venom. The last literature review on stonefish venom was published over a decade ago, and much has changed in the field since. In this review, we have generated a global map of the current distribution of all stonefish ( Synanceia ) species, presented a table of clinical case reports and provided up-to-date information about the development of polyspecific stonefish antivenom. We have also presented an overview of recent advancements in the biomolecular composition of stonefish venom, including the analysis of transcriptomic and proteomic data from Synanceia horrida venom gland. Moreover, this review highlights the need for further research on the composition and properties of stonefish venom, which may reveal novel molecules for drug discovery, development or other novel physiological uses.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV), an arbovirus belonging to the Phlebovirus genus of the Phenuiviridae family, causes the zoonotic and mosquito-borne RVF. The virus, which primarily affects livestock (ruminants and camels) and humans, is at the origin of recent major outbreaks across the African continent (Mauritania, Libya, Sudan), and in the South-Western Indian Ocean (SWIO) islands (Mayotte). In order to be better prepared for upcoming outbreaks, to predict its introduction in RVFV unscathed countries, and to run efficient surveillance programmes, the priority is harmonising and improving the diagnostic capacity of endemic countries and/or countries considered to be at risk of RVF. A serological inter-laboratory proficiency test (PT) was implemented to assess the capacity of veterinary laboratories to detect antibodies against RVFV. A total of 18 laboratories in 13 countries in the Middle East, North Africa, South Africa, and the Indian Ocean participated in the initiative. Two commercial kits and two in-house serological assays for the detection of RVFV specific IgG antibodies were tested. Sixteen of the 18 participating laboratories (88.9%) used commercial kits, the analytical performance of test sensitivity and specificity based on the seroneutralisation test considered as the reference was 100%. The results obtained by the laboratories which used the in-house assay were correct in only one of the two criteria (either sensitivity or specificity). In conclusion, most of the laboratories performed well in detecting RVFV specific IgG antibodies and can therefore be considered to be prepared. Three laboratories in three countries need to improve their detection capacities. Our study demonstrates the importance of conducting regular proficiency tests to evaluate the level of preparedness of countries and of building a network of competent laboratories in terms of laboratory diagnosis to better face future emerging diseases in emergency conditions., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Introduction: Members of the onchoproteocephalidean genus Phoreiobothrium Linton, 1889 infect carcharhinid and sphyrnid sharks. Although the Persian Gulf harbors a rich fauna of sharks, the taxonomic diversity of Phoreiobothrium in this region has been explored little. A new species of Phoreiobothrium is herein described from Carcharhinus sorrah (Müller et Henle) off southern Iran., Methods: Cestodes were isolated from the spiral intestine of Carcharhinus sorrah, fixed in 10% seawater-buffered formalin, and stored in 70% ethanol. For morphological examinations, worms were stained using acetic carmine; a subset was prepared for SEM., Results: Phoreiobothrium sorrahcola n. sp. is the first record of the genus from C. sorrah and most closely resembles Phoreiobothrium rozatii Alijanpour Darvishi et Haseli, 2019 recently described from the Gulf of Oman. However, it differs from P. rozatii in its possession of the rectangular, rather than triangular, bothridia, a longer cephalic peduncle (878-1300 vs 466-841), the longer axial prongs of lateral and medial hooks (B 56-80 vs 43-52; B' 66-98 vs 46-62), and a greater maximum width of worm at level of scolex (302-415 vs 215-298)., Conclusions: With the description of this new species, three species of Phoreiobothrium have been reported so far from the southern waters of Iran. Phoreiobothrium now includes 17 valid species infecting 16 shark species.

Background: There is an unapprehended diversity in the epidemiology of multiple sclerosis (MS) in different geographical regions. In this study, for the first time, we systematically review the studies estimating the incidence and/or prevalence of MS in the Persian Gulf area. The goal is to obtain the overall incidence and prevalence of MS and elucidate the reasons for the geographical variation., Methods: A comprehensive literature search was carried out using MEDLINE and EMBASE through articles published between January 1985 and December 2018 on MS epidemiology in Persian Gulf countries including Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Search terms included 'Multiple sclerosis', 'Incidence', 'Prevalence', 'Epidemiology', 'Persian Gulf', 'Arabian Gulf' and name of each country. Only full-text articles published in English were included. All abstracts were considered and two trained reviewers evaluated the study quality using an assessment tool specifically designed for this study., Results: 39 studies met the inclusion criteria. The mean age at disease onset varied in each country and the pooled mean age of onset was 23.11. The overall pooled MS incidence was 5.03/100,000 person-years (95% CI: 0.04 - 10.02). Prevalence was 39.31/100,000 (95% CI: 29.12 - 49.50) and the result of the meta-regression method showed that prevalence increased by 2.3% per year between 1985-2018 (p = 0.04). Quality scores ranged from 4/7 to 8/8., Conclusion: The prevalence and incidence of MS in the Persian Gulf region has gone through significant changes during the past decades. Five new species of the elasmobranch tapeworm genus Anthocephalum Linton, 1890 (Rhinebothriidea: Anthocephaliidae Ruhnke, Caira and Cox, 2015 ) are described from the mangrove whipray, Urogymnus granulatus (Macleay) from the Solomon Islands and northern Australia. Anthocephalum blairi n. sp., Anthocephalum gravisi n. sp., Anthocephalum haroldsoni n. sp., Anthocephalum mounseyi n. sp., and Anthocephalum ruhnkei n. sp. differ from one another and their congeners based on quantitative and qualitative features of the scolex and proglottid anatomy. Species boundaries recognized by these distinguishing morphological features are supported by a maximum likelihood phylogenetic analysis based on combined 18S rDNA and 28S rDNA (D1-D3) sequence data showing the new species as independent lineages among 13 of the 18 species of Anthocephalum described to date. Several morphological features (the possession of columns of vitelline follicles that are interrupted by the ovary, a uterus that does not extend to the anterior margin of the proglottid but stops short in the anterior region of the field of testes, proximal surfaces of the marginal loculi covered with acicular filitriches only throughout, or with gladiate spinitriches and acicular filitriches throughout, and proximal bothridial surfaces with gladiate spinitriches and acicular filitriches) are collectively exhibited by the 5 new species and have not been documented previously in other species of Anthocephalum. The genus is herein amended to reflect these features. Additionally, the replacement name Anthocephalum centrurum ( Southwell, 1925 ) Ruhnke, 1994 is reinstated as the valid name for the type species of the genus, Anthocephalum gracile Linton, 1890 , with the latter being the junior secondary homonym of A. gracile ( Wedl, 1855 ) Ruhnke, 1994 . The description of these new species increases the number of valid species of Anthocephalum from 18 to 23.

Since the 1970s, mosquito-borne pathogens have spread to previously disease-free areas, as well as causing increased illness in endemic areas. In particular, dengue and chikungunya viruses, transmitted primarily by Aedes aegypti and secondarily by Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, represent a threat for up to a third of the world population, and are a growing public health concern. In this study, we assess the spatial and temporal factors related to the occurrences of historic dengue and chikungunya outbreaks in 76 nations focused geographically on the Indian Ocean, with outbreak data from 1959 to 2009. First, we describe the historical spatial and temporal patterns of outbreaks of dengue and chikungunya in the focal nations. Second, we use a boosted regression tree approach to assess the statistical relationships of nations' concurrent outbreak occurrences and annual occurrences with their spatial proximity to prior infections and climatic and socio-economic characteristics. We demonstrate that higher population density and shorter distances among nations with outbreaks are the dominant factors that characterize both dengue and chikungunya outbreaks. This study describes infection of intestinal smooth muscle in fringelip mullets Crenimugil crenilabis with Kudoa crenimugilis n. sp. Of 30 individuals sampled from the Red Sea off Saudi Arabia, 6 (20%) were infected. Ovoid plasmodia (279-412 × 157-295 µm) in the smooth muscle of the intestine were packed with only mature myxospores with 4 valves. Specifically, light and transmission electron microscopy revealed quadrate myxospores with 4 equal, rounded, spore valves uniting at thin delicate suture lines. The mature myxospores were 8 (7-9) µm long, 5.2 (5-6) µm thick and 7.8 (7-8) µm wide. The 4 polar capsules were equal-sized, elliptical to ovoid, and measured 5 (4-5) µm long and 2 (1.5-3) µm wide, possessing 2 filament coils. The sporoplasm was uninucleated and composed of a primary cell enveloping a secondary cell. The parasite had a significant histopathological impact since the developing plasmodia replaced normal muscle tissue and was associated with the myolysis of local muscle fibres and the inflammatory infiltration of lymphocytes and macrophages. The partial sequences of the 18S and 28S rDNA showed that K. crenimugilis n. sp. has the highest level of nucleotide similarity with K. ciliatae (98.46 and 94.11%, respectively) and K. cookii (97.51 and 92.11%, respectively), both of which have previously been reported from the intestines of their host fish. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that K. crenimugilis consistently clustered with these other 2 intestinal Kudoa species in a well-supported subclade, confirming the evaluative association between Kudoa species infecting the same organs.

Background: Studies on work-leave rotation pattern and work place injuries among offshore oil and gas workers have been few and limited to a 2- or 3-week rotation schedule., Aims: To examine incidence of workplace injury in relation to the duration of time into work rotation for extended work schedules up to 24 weeks., Methods: Six-year injury data on four offshore installations were extracted. Data were analysed for incidence of injury over time and relative risk using linear trend lines and regression., Results: In total, 311 injuries for 1302 workers were analysed, 39% with rotation schedule of 4 weeks work and 4 weeks rest, 27% 8 weeks work and 4 weeks rest, 23% 16 weeks work and 4 weeks rest and 10% 24 weeks work and 4 weeks rest. Incidence of injury decreased as duration of time into the work rotation increased, corrected for exposure, and this was statistically significant for all rotations in first 4 weeks (P < 0.01). Negative correlation between time offshore and injury was observed in all schedules and consistent for age groups, categories of work, shifts and severity of injury. There was no difference in relative risk of injuries between the four schedules, when corrected for exposure and occupational risk of injury., Conclusions: These results are at variance with previous studies, although no prior study has looked beyond 3-week rotation schedule. Longer offshore schedules are safely possible and this could help decrease manpower and logistics costs for oil and gas companies coping with unprecedented low oil prices.

Background: Information on the epidemiology of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) in the Arabian Gulf region, which has an elevated rate of consanguinity and type II diabetes, is scarce., Objectives: To assess the prevalence of FH, its management, and impact on atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) outcomes in a multicenter cohort of Arabian Gulf patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS)., Methods: Patients (N = 3224) hospitalized with ACS were studied. FH was diagnosed using the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network criteria. A composite endpoint of nonfatal myocardial infarction, stroke, transient ischemic attack, and mortality between the "probable/definite" and the "unlikely" FH patients was assessed after 1 year. Analyses were performed using univariate and multivariate statistical techniques., Results: At admission, the proportion of "probable/definite", "possible", and "unlikely" FH in ACS patients was 3.7% (n = 119), 28% (n = 911), and 68% (n = 2194), respectively. Overall, 54% (n = 1730) of patients had diabetes, whereas 24% (n = 783) were current smokers. The "probable/definite" FH group was younger (50 vs 63 years; P < .001), had a greater prevalence of early coronary disease (38% vs 8.8%; P < .001), and previous statin use (87% vs 57%; P < .001) when compared with the "unlikely" FH group. After 1 year, the "probable/definite" FH cohort had worse lipid control (13% vs 23%; P < .001) and presented with a greater association with the composite ASCVD endpoint when compared with the "unlikely" FH group (odds ratio: 1.85; 95% confidence interval: 1.01-3.38; P = .047) after multivariable adjustment., Conclusions: In Arabian Gulf citizens, FH was common in ACS patients, was undertreated, and was associated with a worse 1-year prognosis., (Copyright © 2018 National Lipid Association. The ingestion of heavy metals through contaminated seafood can causes significant outcomes on human health. In recent years, consume fishes and shrimps has increased in Iran, and several study about heavy metals content in fishes and shrimps from Persian Gulf were carried out to check their food safety. The aims of these systematic reviews and meta-analysis was to summarize the evidence on the relation of the intakes of Arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) levels, based on the origin and sub-groups of shrimp species consumed, Hence that we can estimate the risk of oral cancer induced by Pb and As in these groups of shrimp from the persian gulf. We carried out a search of all suitable studies published between 1995 and 2017 in Scopus, Science Direct, PubMed and Web of Science databases. Since the heterogeneity among studied was significant, we used the random effect model (REM) to perform meta-analysis of data. Data were obtained from 9 articles (14 studies), with 511 samples, and it was reported that pooled levels of As and Pb in the muscle shrimps were 1.37 (95% CI: 0.66-2.08 mg/kg d.w.) and 0.58 (95% CI: 0.33-0.82 mg/kg d.w.), respectively. This pooled levels in muscle shrimps were higher than safe dose reported on Food and Agriculture Organization/World Health Organization guidelines (FAO/WHO). The rank order of shrimps species based on As was Panulirus homarus > Penaeus semisulcatus and for the Pb levels was Litopenaeus vannamei > Panulirus homarus > Fenneropenaeus indicus > Metapenaeus affinis. The lowest and highest risk levels of oral cancer, divided by consumers age groups, were respectively 45-54 (6.94E-04) and 15-24 (8.42E-04) for the Pb, and 45-54 (2.87E-01) and 15-24 (3.51E-01) for arsenic. Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk (ILCR) of Pb and As was higher than 10-4 and 10-3, respectively. All groups (age) of consumers are subject to the cancer risk of due to the consumption of shrimps contaminated by Pb and As, therefore, should be started a control plan for the reduction of the heavy metal bioaccumulation levels in shrimps of the Persian Gulf coupled to a capillary food safety communication., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Hysterothylacium species are perhaps the most abundant and diverse group of marine ascaridoids; however, their life cycle and specific identification in larval stages in many parts of the world, particularly in Iraqi marine waters, have not been completely understood. In this study three members of the genus Hysterothylacium collected from Khor Abdulla in Iraq are morphologically described, genetically characterized and their relationship with other closely related taxa are compared and discussed. A new Hysterothylacium larval type in the fourth stage of development is described, and morphological and molecular evidence (based on the sequences of internal transcribed spacers) are provided for its distinction from previously known fourth-stage Hysterothylacium larval types. Based on the sequence data it is suggested that the new larval type, which herein was assigned as Hysterothylacium larval type XVI, is H. persicum which was previously reported from the close proximity in Bandar Abbas, Iran. In addition, two other taxa, including Hysterothylacium larval type XV and H. reliquens, have been found in the present study, for which new hosts are reported. This study provides some insights into the taxonomy and systematics of these parasites, not only in this region but also for similar studies elsewhere.

Melioidosis is a disease caused by bacteria called B. pseudomallei. Infections can develop after contact with standing water. This disease can reach all the organs and especially the lungs. It is associated with a high mortality rate (up to 50%). Melioidosis is endemic in northern Australia and in Southeast Asia. Nevertheless, B. pseudomallei may be endemic in the Indian Ocean region and in Madagascar in particular, so clinicians and microbiologists should consider acute melioidosis as a differential diagnosis in the Indian Ocean region, in particular from Madagascar.

An investigation was undertaken on the population biology of the mazocraeid monogenean Paramazocreas thrissocles occurring on the gills of the engraulid fish Thryssa mystax at Visakhapatnam coast , Bay of Bengal. The influence of season and host size on the parasite population density and the dispersion pattern of the parasite in the host population were analysed. A distinct seasonal pattern in the prevalence and intensity to infection is noted with higher parasite loads prevailing during warmer summer months and very low or no infection during winter months. The heavy infections are found to be promoted by high temperatures prevailing during summer months coupled with high host density and the larger size of fish examined during this period. A positive correlation between host size and prevalence and mean intensity to infection with the monogenean was noted, larger fish often carrying heavy infections. Further the monogenean showed an aggregated distribution on the host population as evidenced by the low value of negative binomial parameter 'K'.

The circulation of West Nile virus (WNV) in horses was investigated in the Southwest Indian ocean. In 2010, blood samples were collected from a total of 303 horses originating from Madagascar, Mauritius, Reunion and the Seychelles and tested for WNV-specific antibodies. An overall seroprevalence of 27.39% was detected in the Indian Ocean with the highest WNV antibody prevalence of 46.22% (95% CI: [37.4-55.2%]) in Madagascar. The age and origin of the horses were found to be associated with the WNV infection risk. This paper presents the first seroprevalence study investigating WN fever in horses in the Southwest Indian Ocean area and indicates a potential risk of infection for humans and animals. Emerging outbreaks of arboviroses are most often tied to the convergence of a set of factors which have physical and environmental, genetic and biological, ecological, social, political and economic origins. Thirteen out of these factors are known as main determinants of emerging infectious disease outbreaks. This paper assesses the role of these factors from exploring the Chikungunya outbreak which occurred in Indian Ocean in 2004-2007, as case study. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are useful genetic markers to investigate the onset of multiple sclerosis (MS). A genome wide association study identified 7 SNPs associated with interferon‑β therapy response, however, not with MS risk in a Spanish population. To investigate these findings in a different cohort, the 7 SNPs were investigated in an Arabian Gulf population. The SNPs were analyzed in 268 subjects (156 patients and 112 healthy volunteers) from the Arabian Gulf region using restriction fragment length polymorphism-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and KBioscience Competitive Allele Specific PCR genotyping methods. Associations between the SNPs and MS were investigated using logistic regression. The present study observed, for the first time, that in an Arabian Gulf population, the ZFAT rs733254 polymorphism (T>G) is a gender‑specific risk marker for MS. ZFAT was associated with MS in women but not in men. The G variant was highly associated with the risk of MS [odds ratio (OR)=2.38 and 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.45‑3.91); P=0.0014]. Whereas variant T was a significantly protective factor [OR=0.420 (95% CI, 0.25‑0.69); P=0.0014, recessive model]. The findings of the present study provide a genetic basis for the gender‑associated susceptibility to MS. In addition, this MS-associated rs733254 SNP may predict MS onset in females from the Arabian Gulf population.

Bianium spongiosum Bray & Cribb, 1998 (Lepocreadiidae), described from the yellow boxfish, Ostracion cubicus Linnaeus (Ostraciidae), off Lizard Island, Queensland, Australia, possesses a combination of the following three morphological features which distinguishes it from all the other species currently assigned to the genus: (1) large internal patches of large cells forming sponge-like pads we have termed "pelops"("pelop" sing.) laterally in the forebody extending from near the anterior extremity to about the level of the intestinal bifurcation rather than possessing a scoop; (2) ceca that reach to near the posterior extremity where they end blindly without ani; and (3) a vitellarium which is present laterally but not dorsal to the ceca. Based on this we propose the erection of Pelopscreadium n. gen. (Lepocreadiidae) with the assignment of B. spongiosum to this new genus as the type-species, Pelopscreadium spongiosum (Bray & Cribb, 1998) n. comb. Pelopscreadium aegyptense n. sp., also from the yellow boxfish but from the Red Sea off Sharm El-Naga, Egypt, is described as the second member of the new genus because it shares these three characteristics with P. spongiosum.

Genetic characterization of myxosporean species, including members of the genus Kudoa, has advanced dramatically throughout the last decade. This is in stark contrast to those species described further back in time. Kudoa musculoliquefaciens described from the jellied muscle of swordfish, Xiphias gladius, in the western Pacific Ocean off the Sanriku Coast, northern Japan, is one such species. In the present study, multiple pseudocysts (0.66-1.35 mm average length and 0.06-0.10 mm average width) containing K. musculoliquefaciens spores were collected from three host groups: muscle blocks of swordfish caught in the western Pacific Ocean off the Sanriku Coast, or the northern Indian Ocean, and Indo-Pacific sailfish, Istiophorus platypterus, in the western Pacific Ocean off Kochi, western Japan. Subspherical K. musculoliquefaciens spores, 8.0-10.3 μm in width, 7.3-10.0 μm in thickness, 6.4-7.9 μm in sutural thickness, and 5.5-8.1 μm in length, had four subspherical polar capsules, 2.8-4.0 μm in length by 2.2-3.2 μm in width. The kudoid spores found in the different host groups showed morphometric variations to some extent but had essentially identical nucleotide sequences of the ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA), closest to those of Kudoa hemiscylli or Kudoa carcharhini recorded from elasmobranchs in the Indo-Pacific Ocean. Another kudoid species, Kudoa pleurogrammi n. sp., was recorded from the jellied and normal muscles of Atka mackerel, Pleurogrammus monopterygius and Pleurogrammus azonus, fished in the northern Pacific Ocean or northern Sea of Japan. Subquadrate spores found in round-ended pseudocysts (1.15-3.85 mm in length and 0.11-0.26 mm in width) in myofibers were 8.2-9.1 μm in width, 7.1-8.2 μm in thickness, 5.4-7.7 μm in sutural thickness, and 5.6-6.8 μm in length, with four ovoid polar capsules, 2.7-2.9 μm in length by 1.4-2.0 μm in width. Kudoid spores from both jellied and normal muscles or different host fish species had identical 18S or 28S rDNA nucleotide sequences. Thus, molecular genetic characterization of kudoid species with the potential to induce post-mortem myoliquefaction will facilitate the reliable and specific identification of myxosporeans found in either jellied or normal muscles of important commercial fish.

The microthrix pattern of adult Parachristianella indonesiensis Palm, 2004 is described for the first time based on the standardized terminology for microtriches, and the generic diagnosis of Parachristianella Dollfus, 1946, regarding microtriches, is also amended. The surface ultrastructure of P. indonesiensis consists of three kinds of microtriches so that the proximal and distal bothrial surfaces are covered respectively with acicular to short capilliform filitriches and aristate gladiate spinitriches interspersed with capilliform filitriches. The remainder of the scolex bears capilliform filitriches. The surface of the proglottid is adorned with acicular filitriches. There was no significant difference in the length of the capilliform filitriches covering the different parts of the scolex peduncle. For the first time, the uniciliated papillae adorned with filitriches as sensory receptors are reported from this parasitic species. The partial rrnl of P. indonesiensis is also presented as the only known sequence of this gene in the superfamily Eutetrarhynchoidea Dollfus, 1969. The pairwise comparisons of rrnl between P. indonesiensis and the trypanorhynch species for which rrnl sequence is available were in accordance with the last phylogeny presented for the order Trypanorhyncha. The infection parameters (prevalence, mean abundance, and mean intensity) of P. indonesiensis parasitizing Pastinachus sephen (Forsskål) from the eastern Persian Gulf were also compared during approximately 5 years, and no significant differences were observed. This may be interpreted as the stability of the factors playing important roles in the life cycle of P. indonesiensis in the eastern Persian Gulf during this period.

Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne Alphavirus that is spreading worldwide in the tropical areas and that has a 11.8 kb RNA genome. The most relevant vectors belong to the genus Aedes and contribute to the diffusion of the three different genotypes of the virus from the original site of first identification in East Africa. Recently, an additional site of origin has been identified in Asia. The epidemiology of Chikungunya has been extensively evaluated from 2004 when the virus initiated its travel eastbound from the coast of Africa to the Indian Ocean. It is noteworthy that this diffusion has been mainly sustained by Ae. albopictus, a new vector to which the virus become adapted due to the mutation E1-Ala226Val. This mutation was also identified during the first, even small, outbreaks of Chikungunya-related disease outside the tropics that occurred in Northern Italy in 2007 and in Southern France in 2010. Three years later the virus appeared for the first time in the Western hemisphere and since then, in less than 24 months spread to North and South America.

To determine the ciguatoxic potential of brown-marbled grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus) in relation to fish size and geographical origin, this review systematically analyzed: 1) reports of large ciguatera outbreaks and outbreaks with description of the fish size; 2) Pacific ciguatoxin (P-CTX) profiles and levels and mouse bioassay results in fish samples from ciguatera incidents; 3) P-CTX profiles and levels and risk of toxicity in relation to fish size and origin; 4) regulatory measures restricting fish trade and fish size preference of the consumers. P-CTX levels in flesh and size dependency of toxicity indicate that the risk of ciguatera after eating E. fuscoguttatus varies with its geographical origin. For a large-sized grouper, it is necessary to establish legal size limits and control measures to protect public health and prevent overfishing. During a survey of the microsporean fauna of the two-spot red snapper Lutjanus bohar Forsskål, 1775, from the Red Sea off Jizan (Saudi Arabia), a species of Glugea Thélohan, 1891 was found that did not conform to any known species. The species is characterized by the presence of spherical xenomas (ca. 2-5 mm in diameter) in the host body cavity. Examination of the lifecycle stages and mature spores using light and transmission electron microscopy also revealed morphological characteristics typical of species of the genus Glugea. Spores were elongated-ovoid with a posterior vacuole surrounded by the polar filament coils. Mature spores were 4.5 (4.0-4.8) µm long and 2.5 (2.0-2.5) µm wide. The polar filament was isofilar with 28 to 30 coils, although in most cases 29 coils, organized in 3 rows. Phylogenetic study based on the partial sequence of the small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene clustered the new microsporidia within the clade grouping species of the genus Glugea. The comprehensive analysis of the parasite's ultrastructural characteristics, together with molecular data for the SSU rDNA gene, suggests that this parasite is a new species of the genus Glugea, for which the name Glugea jazanensis sp. nov. is proposed.

Coral diseases represent a significant and increasing threat to coral reefs. Among the most destructive diseases is White Syndrome (WS), which is increasing in distribution and prevalence throughout the Indo-Pacific. The aim of this study was to determine taxonomic and spatial patterns in mortality rates of corals following the 2008 outbreak of WS at Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean. WS mainly affected Acropora plate corals and caused total mortality of 36% of colonies across all surveyed sites and depths. Total mortality varied between sites but was generally much greater in the shallows (0-96% of colonies at 5 m depth) compared to deeper waters (0-30% of colonies at 20 m depth). Site-specific mortality rates were a reflection of the proportion of corals affected by WS at each site during the initial outbreak and were predicted by the initial cover of live Acropora plate cover. The WS outbreak had a selective impact on the coral community. Following the outbreak, live Acropora plate coral cover at 5 m depth decreased significantly from 7.0 to 0.8%, while the cover of other coral taxa remained unchanged. Observations five years after the initial outbreak revealed that total Acropora plate cover remained low and confirmed that corals that lost all their tissue due to WS did not recover. These results demonstrate that WS represents a significant and selective form of coral mortality and highlights the serious threat WS poses to coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific.

This paper aims to resolve the dual composition of the triakid shark-hosted tetraphyllidean genus Calliobothrium--an issue that has been recognized for over a decade. As it stands, this genus includes a number of large species with laciniate proglottids, most of which bear 3 suckers at the anterior margin of each bothridium, but it also includes a number of species that lack proglottid laciniations and bear only a single sucker per bothridium, most of which are relatively small. Discovery of 2 new species, 1 of each form, parasitizing the whitespot smoothhound shark, Mustelus palumbes, off South Africa, prompted the first molecular analysis of the genus. Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood analyses of 28S rDNA (D1-D3) sequence data generated for specimens of both new species as well as of 2 known species of the laciniate form (Calliobothrium australis and Calliobothrium cf. verticillatum) and 3 known species of the non-laciniate form (Calliobothrium violae, Calliobothrium riseri, and Calliobothrium barbarae) confirmed the reciprocal monophyly of the 2 clades, supporting establishment of a new genus. Because the type of Calliobothrium, C. verticillatum, is of the laciniate form, Symcallio n. gen., with Symcallio peteri n. gen., n. sp., from M. palumbes described as its type, is established to house members of the non-laciniate clade. The 11 described species consistent with this form are transferred to the new genus. A new species of the laciniate clade, Calliobothrium euzeti n. sp., is described from M. palumbes, and a revised diagnosis of Calliobothrium is presented.

During a survey of Red Sea fish parasites, two trematodes belonging to the genus Pseudolepidapedon Yamaguti, 1938 were encountered: P. balistis Manter, 1940 was found in the small intestine of the fish Balistoides viridescens and was redescribed for the first time from Egypt; adding many detailed morphological and ultrastructural characters. The second trematode was found in the small intestine of the fish Rhinecanthus assasi and found to represent a biological variant of the previous species as it differs from it in its generally smaller dimensions, shape of suckers and pharynx and the testes. SEM details of the first species were described for the first time illustrating the differences in the spination and papillae on different parts of the body; which may be of taxonomic importance in recognizing future different species of the genus.

Three juvenile nematode parasites were collected naturally from 90 (75 %) out of 120 specimens of the marine greater lizard fish Saurida undosquamis captured from water coasts at Hurghada City along the Red Sea in Egypt during the period from September 2013 to April 2014. Worms were identified on the basis of light and scanning electron microscopy. Two of the recovered worms were isolated from the peritoneal cavity of the infected fish around the wall of the stomach as encapsulated larvae. The anisakid juvenile Anisakis sp. (Type II) was characterized by an anteroventrally triangular mouth, with a boring tooth; its postanal tail was rounded, without a terminal mucron or spine. The gnathostomatid Echinocephalus overstreeti was characterized by the presence of a cephalic bulb armed with six transverse rows of spines which were slightly more compact near the anterior end of bulb with maximal separation near the midbulb; the cephalic bulb terminated at a pseudolabia which situated dorsoventrally and reached its greatest width at the posterior one third of the body, The postanal tail terminated at a pointed mucron. The third juvenile species, Hysterothylacium patagonense (Anisakidae), was isolated from the intestine of the infected fish; they are characterized by a small-sized body with a conical tail provided by a nodulose apex, and the anterior end was equipped with three lips. A dorsal lip slightly smaller than the two subventrals left a deep postlabial groove and prominent lateral flanges in between, and the proximal part of each lip was smooth. The three described species were compared morphologically and morphometrically with some of the previously recorded species of the same genus. From this comparison, the similarity and variations between these species were described and concluded that the present study should be considered as a new host record in Egypt.

Myxozoans, a diverse group of microscopic obligate endoparasites, can cause diseases in a number of economically important fish, including the marbled spinefoot Siganus rivulatus. To date, only 1 myxozoan, Zschokkella helmii, has been reported to infect S. rivulatus. Here we describe another myxozoan detected in S. rivulatus. Investigations of 40 marbled spinefoot fish caught from the Red Sea coast, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, revealed clusters of parasitic spores in the kidney. Light microscope examination of the native spores revealed sub-spherical, mature spores with smooth shell valves. The 2 polar capsules were equal in size, and the polar filament was perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the polar capsules. Histopathological examinations of the infected kidneys demonstrated the presence of both spores and developmental stages in the lumen of the renal tubules without any pathological effect. Electron microscopy investigations showed maturing spores composed of 2 valvogenic cells, each with a prominent nucleus. The valvogenic cells enclosed 2 polar capsules containing 3 filament coils as well as a binucleated sporoplasm cell filling the space between and beneath the 2 polar capsules. BLAST search analysis of the amplified sequence from the detected parasite indicated a high percent of identity to the 18S rDNA genes of different myxosporean species. Phylogenetic analysis placed the detected parasite within a clade of Ortholinea sp. (AL-2006). Based on the results of the light and electron microscopy, histopathological, and molecular investigations, the detected parasite was identified as a myxosporean parasite belonging to the genus Ortholinea and designated as O. saudii sp. nov.

A new species of parasitic copepod Anchistrotos tangi sp. n. (Cyclopoida: Taeniacanthidae) is described based on adult female specimens collected from the gills of hilsa shad, Tenualosa ilisha (Hamilton, 1822) (Actinopterygii: Clupeidae) captured off Iraq. The new species differs from its congeners by having the following combination of characters in the adult female: 1) the rostral area sclerotised; 2) the presence of row of spinules on the proximal and distal margins of the anal somite; 3) the maxilliped claw with 2 long whip-like setae just crossing the distal edge of claw with serrated terminal margin; and 4) the leg 5 ornamented with patched spinules distally. This is the ninth nominal species of Anchistrotos Brian, 1906.

The hard tick Ixodes uriae parasitises a wide range of seabird species in the circumpolar areas of both Northern and Southern hemispheres and has been shown to be infected with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the bacterial agents of Lyme borreliosis. Although it is assumed that seabirds represent viable reservoir hosts, direct demonstrations of infection are limited to a single study from the Northern hemisphere. Here, the blood of 50 tick-infested adult king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus halli) breeding in the Crozet Archipelago (Southern Indian Ocean) was examined for B. burgdorferi sl exposure by serology and for spirochetemia by in vitro DNA amplification. Four birds were found positive by serology, whereas B. burgdorferi sl DNA was detected in two other birds. Our data therefore provide the first direct proof of Borrelia burgdorferi sl spirochetes in seabirds of the Southern hemisphere and indicate a possible reservoir role for king penguins in the natural maintenance of this bacterium. Although the bacterial genetic diversity present in these hosts and the infectious period for tick vectors remain to be elucidated, our results add to a growing body of knowledge on the contribution of seabirds to the complex epizootiology of Lyme disease and the global dissemination of B. burgdorferi sl spirochetes., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier GmbH. Based on light and scanning electron microscopical studies, two new gonad-infecting species of Philometra Costa, 1845 (Nematoda: Philometridae) are described from marine fishes of the genus Lutjanus Bloch (Lutjanidae, Perciformes) in the Bay of Bengal, off the eastern coast of India: Philometra argentimaculati sp. n. and Philometra fulvi sp. n. from the mangrove red snapper Lutjanus argentimaculatus (Forsskål) and blacktail snapper Lutjanus fulvus (Foerster), respectively. P. argentimaculati is mainly characterised by the body length of male 2.56-3.07 mm, needle-like spicules 183-228 μm long, length of the gubernaculum at 90-120 μm, distal end of the gubernaculum with lamellar structures without a dorsal protuberance and by the dorsally non-interrupted male caudal mound. P. fulvi differs from all Philometra spp. with described males in the rectangular shape of the distal tip of the gubernaculum and is noted for the length of needle-like spicules 123-138 μm, that of the gubernaculum 69-93 μm and for the presence of a dorsal protuberance and lamella-like structures on the gubernaculum distal end. These are the first nominal species of philometrids reported from fishes of the family Lutjanidae in the region of the Indian Ocean. A necessity of further detailed studies on philometrids parasitising marine fishes worlwide is stressed.

Four new species are described in the lecanicephalidean genus Hornellobothrium from the ocellated eagle ray, Aetobatus ocellatus, from Australia and Indonesian Borneo. The species possess flat, laterally expanded immature proglottids and a small internal, glandular apical organ diagnostic of the genus. To date, only 2 valid species are recognized in the genus: Hornellobothrium cobraformis Shipley & Hornell, 1906 , from " Aetobatus narinari " from Sri Lanka, and Hornellobothrium extensivum Jensen, 2005 , from A. ocellatus , also from Australia. The new species differ from H. cobraformis in the shape of the apical organ and mature proglottids, and from H. extensivum in testes number and scolex dimensions. The new species can be distinguished from one another based on the following combination of features: Hornellobothrium gerdaae n. sp. possesses testes arranged in 2 layers and lacks post-ovarian vitelline follicles; Hornellobothrium iotakotta n. sp. has a single column of 4 testes and lacks spiniform microtriches on the distal bothridial surface; both Hornellobothrium kolossakotta n. sp. and Hornellobothrium najaforme n. sp. possess a single column of 6 testes, but H. najaforme n. sp. is a longer worm with a greater number of laterally expanded immature proglottids. Host associations suggest this genus is potentially limited to A. ocellatus . While reports of up to 9 lecanicephalidean congeners in a single host species exist, they are considered dubious and in need of verification, mainly because of host identification issues. This study demonstrates the presence of at least 5 species of Hornellobothrium in A. ocellatus . Insufficient sampling of this host species across the Indo-Pacific and at each locality may account for the apparent restricted distribution of species of Hornellobothrium.

Seventy specimens of the gilthead sea bream Sparus aurata of the Red Sea were collected during the period from March to November 2013; they were dissected and examined for parasitic acanthocephalans. Only 40 (57.14%) specimens were found to be naturally infected with Serrasentis sagittifer belonging to family Rhadinorhynchidae. The infection was recorded in the intestine, pyloric ceca, and the external surfaces of some internal organs of the infected fish. Seasonally, the prevalence of infection was increased to 77.14% during summer season and decreased to 37.14% during winter. Light and scanning electron microscopic investigation revealed that the adult worm was elongated (with broad anterior and narrow posterior ends) and measured 6.9-8.6 (7.6 ± 0.2) × 0.57-0.73 (0.63 ± 0.02) mm for male and 10.2-12.1 (11.5 ± 0.2) × 0.71-0.82 (0.76 ± 0.02) mm for female. Proboscis was long and cylindrical with a length of 0.97-1.6 mm (1.2 ± 0.2) for male and 1.12-1.17 mm (1.14 ± 0.02) for female. It was covered with numerous uniform spines arranged longitudinally as 9-11 rows each equipped by 15-18 spines. Spines were triangular, arrow-shaped, strong, and covered with cuticular theca; they decreased in size from the apex to the base of the proboscis. The proboscis is followed by a short spineless neck region followed by the body proper which is supported by multiple combs of spines (16-20) on its ventral surface. Molecular analysis of 18S rDNA sequence for the parasite demonstrated a close identity (>83%) between the present acanthocephalan and other previously described species within class Palaeacanthocephala with 98% identity with the previously recorded S. sagittifer (acc. no. JX014227) which is supported by the morphological data and the presence of trunk spines arranged within rows (comb-like) and the presence of four cement glands in the males. So, according to the records of morphological and molecular analyses, the present parasite is classified as S. sagittifer belonging to class Palaeacanthocephala and family Rhadinorhynchidae with a new host record from the gilthead sea bream S. aurata of the Red Sea.

Two morphologically disparate undescribed species of diphyllidean cestodes from the Yellowspotted skate, Leucoraja wallacei , from South Africa were included in a recent molecular phylogenetic study aimed at revising diphyllidean classification. From a molecular standpoint, these species were determined to be only distantly related to one another. One (originally referred to as Echinobothrium n. sp. 2) showed affinities with species of the batoid-parasitizing Echinobothrium sensu stricto and is described here as Echinobothrium marquesi n. sp. This species most closely resembles Echinobothrium joshuai, an affinity supported by the previous molecular study, but differs in the form of its "B" hooks and degree of overlap between bothria and cephalic peduncle. The other species (originally referred to as New genus n. sp. 1), although exhibiting the full complement of scolex armature, grouped among primarily shark-hosted genera, most of which lack or exhibit reduced scolex armatures. That unexpected result suggested that erection of a novel genus might be warranted, but morphological grounds supporting the action were not apparent at that time. The present study aimed to explore the morphology of this taxon in more detail. Light and scanning electron microscopy revealed this taxon to be exceptional in that its lateral hooklets, which are arranged in 2 clusters like those of Echinobothrium and Coronocestus, are unique in being arranged in anterior and posterior rows, rather than in a single row. Andocadoncum n. gen. is erected, with Andocadoncum meganae n. sp. as its type, to accommodate this taxon. A minor adjustment to the existing hook formula by presenting counts for the anterior hooklets (a) separately from the posterior hooklets (b) readily accommodates this new form. Leucoraja wallacei is distinctive among skates in hosting 2 different genera of diphyllideans. In the context of the previous molecular phylogenetic analyses, it appears that the presence of Andocadoncum n. gen. in this skate species may be the result of a host-switching event involving a weakly or unarmed shark-hosted taxon moving to a batoid-a shift that was likely accompanied by a return to the fully armed condition seen, for example, in other batoid-parasitizing members of the order.

Two new species of two genera of the order Diphyllidea van Beneden in Carus, 1863, Halysioncum Caira, Marques, Jensen, Kuchta et Ivanov, 2013 and Echinobothrium van Beneden, 1849 sensu stricto are described from Aetomylaeus cf. nichoffi (Bloch et Schneider) off the Iranian coast of the Persian Gulf. Halysioncum kishiense sp. n. differs from all other congeners in the number of apical hooks with the exception of H. hoffmanorum (Tyler, 2001) and H. pigmentatum (Ostrowski de Núñez, 1971). Halysioncum kishiense sp. n. can be easily differentiated from H. hoffmanorum and H. pigmentatum by the number of hooklets and testis numbers. Echinobothrium parsadrayaiense sp. n. is differentiated from all its congeners except for E. acanthinophyllum Rees, 1961 by its hook formula. The number of spines per column on the cephalic peduncle, the number of testes and possession of a thick-walled rather than thin-walled vagina distinguish E. parsadrayaiense sp. n. from E. acanthinophyllum. To date, with these two new species, five species of Diphyllidea have been reported from the Persian Gulf.

We examined the occurrence of odontoma in the marine fish Sphyraena jello sourced from 3 different landing centers (Cuddalore, Parangipettai and Nagapattinam) in Tamil Nadu (southeast India). A total of 19783 fishes were examined for odontoma presence, of which 2393 were affected with odontoma. The overall prevalence was 12.1% among the 3 stations. Fish landed at Parangipettai showed the highest peak prevalence of odontoma (16.8%) during the pre-monsoon, followed by Nagapatinam (9.1%) during summer 2011. The tumour lengths in premaxilla, supermaxilla and dentary bone were 1.1-3.6, 1.4-5.9 and 1.2-4.1 cm, respectively, and tumour widths were 0.3-1.9, 0.7-3.1 and 0.5-1.9 cm. Higher prevalence (0.206%) of tongue tumour along with odontoma was observed at Nagapattinam whereas it was lower (0.162%) at Cuddalore. Odontoma histopathology showed dense fibrous tissue with fine teeth roots. TEM analysis showed virus-like particles associated with odontoma. Radiography of the odontoma showed that the tumour masses were bony in nature and tissues were merged with upper and lower jaw.

The scleractinian coral Porites lutea, an important reef-building coral on western Indian Ocean reefs (WIO), is affected by a newly-reported white syndrome (WS) the Porites white patch syndrome (PWPS). Histopathology and culture-independent molecular techniques were used to characterise the microbial communities associated with this emerging disease. Microscopy showed extensive tissue fragmentation generally associated with ovoid basophilic bodies resembling bacterial aggregates. Results of 16S rRNA sequence analysis revealed a high variability between bacterial communities associated with PWPS-infected and healthy tissues in P. lutea, a pattern previously reported in other coral diseases such as black band disease (BBD), white band disease (WBD) and white plague diseases (WPD). Furthermore, substantial variations in bacterial communities were observed at the different sampling locations, suggesting that there is no strong bacterial association in Porites lutea on WIO reefs. Several sequences affiliated with potential pathogens belonging to the Vibrionaceae and Rhodobacteraceae were identified, mainly in PWPS-infected coral tissues. Among them, only two ribotypes affiliated to Shimia marina (NR043300.1) and Vibrio hepatarius (NR025575.1) were consistently found in diseased tissues from the three geographically distant sampling localities. The role of these bacterial species in PWPS needs to be tested experimentally.

Two new species of Acanthobothrium van Beneden, 1850 from the spiral intestine of Pastinachus cf. sephen Forsskål from the Iranian coast of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman are described. To analyse the surface ultrastructure the worms were studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. Acanthobothrium jalalii sp. n. belongs to the category 1 species of the genus so far including 43 species. This tiny new species differs from the other category 1 species by its small total length (2.18 +/- 0.49 mm), number of proglottids (4.7 +/- 0.9) and testes (24 +/- 3), terminal segments in an apolytic condition and the shape of the cirrus-sac. Acanthobothrium sphaera sp. n. is a small worm that belongs to the category 2 species of the genus so far including 36 species. A. sphaera sp. n. differs from the other category 2 species by its small total length (1.6 +/- 0.2 mm), number of proglottids (9.6 +/- 1.2) and testes (12 +/- 1), the presence of a vaginal sphincter and the shape of the ovary. This is the first report of Acanthobothrium from the cowtail stingray, P cf. sephen, from the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. Pastinachus sephen sensu lato has been reported as a common host of species of Acanthobothrium. Most recently, the host genus Pastinachus Rüppell has been split into five nominal species and several Acanthobothrium species infect the newly described congeners but not P. sephen. The real identity of the host studied within the present study is still in question, since sequence data of three specimens from the Gulf of Oman do not correspond to P. sephen sensu stricto.

Mercury is a persistent environmental pollutant that has the potential to adversely affect human health, particularly, foetal neurodevelopment. The purpose of the study was to investigate prenatal mercury (Hg) exposure in the population in three sites along the South Africa coast. Study subjects included women (n=350) who were admitted for delivery at the local hospitals. Maternal and cord blood samples were collected to measure total mercury and each participant was required to answer a questionnaire. The 90th percentile of mercury levels in maternal and cord blood of the total population was 1.15 μg/l and 1.67 μg/l, respectively. Site 1 (Manguzi) participants had the highest maternal geometric mean (GM) values of 0.93 μg/l, which was significantly different from Site 2 (Port Shepstone) (0.49 μg/l) and Site 3 (Empangeni) (0.56 μg/l) (ANOVA test, p<0.001). Umbilical cord blood GM Hg level for Site 1 (1.45 μg/l) was more than double the GM Hg level in Site 2 (0.70 μg/l) and Site 3 (0.73 μg/l). Univariate analysis indicated that the following maternal characteristics were positive predictors for elevated umbilical cord Hg levels: maternal blood Hg levels, living with a partner, residing in Site 1, living in informal housing, using wood and gas for cooking, borehole water as a drinking source, and a member of the household being involved in fishing. Maternal dietary predictors of elevated Hg levels in umbilical cord blood included consuming fresh fish, tinned fish, fruit or dairy products, daily. This study provides baseline data and reveals that 2% of the study population were above the EPA's reference value (5.8 μg/l) suggesting low level exposure to mercury in pregnant women and the developing foetus in South Africa. Introduction: Continent-based regional reviews of mental health may not fully describe the status of ethnocultural groups that are widely dispersed across multiple continents or traditional world regions. Our aim was to describe the Austronesians, an ethno-linguistic group living primarily in islands and coastal areas in the Pacific and Indian Oceans and Southeast Asia., Methods: Consulting lay databases, we created matrices to describe the demographic, political, and socioeconomic profiles of nations with majority and minority indigenous Austronesian language-speaking populations. We then accessed the scientific literature to describe examples of mental health disparities and/or challenges in mental health care delivery., Results: Many Austronesian-speaking people have experienced recent or current foreign occupation, lack of recognized sovereignty, poverty and low socioeconomic status, and low availability of psychiatric resources and providers. An analysis of the biological, psychological/psychocultural, and social and environmental impacts (risk or protective) on either the prevalence/presentation of mental illness, help-seeking behavior or access to mental health care, or management of mental illness suggested that there may be relatively unique stressors (e.g. loss of homeland from either global warming or nuclear contamination) affecting people in this region and certain biological profiles (e.g. susceptibility to obesity and metabolic syndrome) that may impact psychiatric treatment., Discussion: Solutions to mental health challenges in this world region may include culturally relevant and integrative mental healthcare delivery models; resource preserving, prevention-focused universal mental healthcare; and technology to improve connectivity and increase access to either direct services or workforce-building education and training., (Copyright © 2013 Wiley Publishing Asia Pty Ltd.)

Rift Valley fever (RVF), a vector-borne zoonotic disease caused by a phlebovirus (family Bunyaviridae), is considered to be one of the most important viral zoonoses in Africa. It is also a potential bioterrorism agent. Transmitted by mosquitoes or by direct contact with viraemic products, RVF affects both livestock and humans, causing abortion storms in pregnant ruminants and sudden death in newborns. The disease provokes flu syndrome in most human cases, but also severe encephalitic or haemorrhagic forms and death. There is neither a treatment nor a vaccine for humans. The disease, historically confined to the African continent, recently spread to the Arabian Peninsula and Indian Ocean. Animal movements, legal or illegal, strongly contribute to viral spread, threatening the Mediterranean basin and Europe, where competent vectors are present. Given the unpredictability of virus introduction and uncertainties about RVF epidemiology, there is an urgent need to fill the scientific gaps by developing large regional research programmes, to build predictive models, and to implement early warning systems and surveillance designs adapted to northern African and European countries., (© 2013 The Author Clinical Microbiology and Infection © 2013 European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.)

Adult worms of Rhadinorhynchus dorsoventrospinosus (Acanthocephala: Rhadinor-hynchidae) were collected from the small intestine of the red spot emperor Lethrinus lentjan (family Lethrinidae) from locations along the Red Sea at Jeddah City, Saudi Arabia. Twenty three out of 70 fish specimens (32.9%) were found to be naturally infected. The parasite was described using photo research Zeiss microscopy and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Light microscopic studies revealed that the adult worm possessed a proboscis which was long, cylindrical with a uniform width measured 0.44 +/- 0.02 (0.38-0.46) mm in length and 0.1 +/- 10.02 (0.09-0.15) mm in width. Proboscis hooks observed by scanning electron microscopy were large, uniform in size (14-16 rows of 26 hooks each) with a row of longer hooks at the base. Comparison between the present described species and four species of the same genus was done, it was observed that there was only one comparable species, R dorsoventrospinosus resembled the present parasite in the general morphology and differed from others, so the present studied species is classified as R. dorsoventrospinosus with new host and locality records.

The presently reported study investigated seasonal fluctuations in the prevalence in four species of Nerocila infesting commercially exploited marine fishes representing the families Engraulidae, Clupeidae and Ambassidae, from the Malabar coast (Kerala, India). Seven of 56 fish species belonging to 23 families were infested by either one or two species of Nerocila. All the collected Nerocila species showed significant seasonal fluctuations in the prevalence of infestation, reaching maximum from October through April and minimum (or total absence of the parasites) from May through September. Such fluctuations were analyzed based on environmental parameters. Body surface, postero-ventral side of the head and the lateral line of the host fish form the major infestation site for the recovered Nerocila species. Skin lesion and hemorrhages were observed on the fish parasitized with these cymothoids.

A putative underdiagnosis of clinical chikungunya virus infection in Dutch travelers to the Indian Ocean area was addressed by retrospective screening of all sera for which requested dengue virus serology was negative in the period 2007 to 2010. During the last decade, Acinetobacter baumannii (AB) has been increasingly responsible for infections occurring in three particular contexts (in terms of patients and environment). Community AB pneumonia is severe infections, mainly described around the Indian Ocean, and which mainly concern patients with major co-morbidities. AB is also responsible for infections occurring among soldiers wounded in action during operations conducted in Iraq or Afghanistan. Lastly, this bacterium is responsible for infections occurring among casualties from natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis. Those infections are often due to multidrug-resistant strains, which can be implicated in nosocomial outbreaks when patients are hospitalized in a local casualty department or during their repatriation thereafter. The source of the contaminations which lead to AB infections following injuries (warfare or natural disasters) is still poorly known. Three hypotheses are usually considered: a contamination of wounds with environmental bacteria, a wound contamination from a previous cutaneous or oropharyngeal endogenous reservoir, or hospital acquisition. Based on light and scanning electron microscopical studies, the following five species of the Philometridae (Nematoda: Dracunculoidea) are described from female specimens collected from marine fishes off the southwestern coast of Java, Indonesia: Philometra lobotidis sp. n. from the abdominal cavity of the Atlantic tripletail Lobotes surinamensis (Bloch) (Lobotidae, Perciformes); Philometra javaensis sp. n. from the abdominal cavity of the immaculate puffer Arothron immaculatus (Bloch et Schneider) (Tetraodontidae, Tetraodontiformes); Philometra psettoditis sp. n. from the musculature of the Indian spiny turbot Psettodes erumei (Bloch et Schneider) (Psettodidae, Pleuronectiformes); Philometroides indonesiensis sp. n. from the musculature of the hound needlefish Tylosurus crocodilus crocodilus (Péron et Lesueur) (Belonidae, Beloniformes); and Philometroides trichiuri sp. n. from the dorsal fin of the largehead hairtail Trichiurus lepturus Linnaeus (type host) and the savalai hairtail Lepturacanthus savala (Cuvier) (both Trichiuridae, Perciformes). All these new species are distinguished from their congeners parasitizing marine fishes by morphological (mainly the shape and structure of the cephalic and caudal ends and of the oesophagus) and biometrical features. Besides previously known Philometra pellucida (Jägerskiöld, 1893) and Philometra ocularis Moravec, Ogawa, Suzuki, Miyazaki et Donai, 2002, they are the only nominal philometrid species recorded from Indonesian waters.
