Background: Tooth wear is an important mechanism for reducing dental dimensions and, consequently, dental crowding. The objective of this cohort study was to examine the relation of tooth wear, adjusted for covariates (age, tooth loss, arch perimeter and intercanine width), on tertiary crowding in Amazon Indigenous populations. Methods: A sample of 40 Indigenous people in permanent dentition at T0 (baseline) and after 13 years (T1) were evaluated. The sample included 16 males and 24 females belonging to two villages, Arara (n = 22, mean ages 16.6 and 29.9 years) and Assurini do Xingu (n = 18, mean ages 16.0 and 29.6 years). Clinical, intraoral photograph and dental cast evaluations were performed at both times. The anterior crowding was measured using Little's Irregularity Index (LI) and modeled through a multilevel linear regression with the predictor variables: village, tooth wear (T1-T0), age (T0), tooth loss (T1-T0), changes in intercanine width (T1-T0) and changes in arch perimeter (T1-T0). Results: A slight increase was observed (< 1 mm) in anterior dental crowding and a decrease in arch perimeter < 1.5 mm, while tooth wear increased between 0.65 and 0.99 units. The contextual variable (village) had no significant association with LI. In the upper arch, tooth loss was the only variable that showed an inverse association with LI (β=-0.41, p < 0.05). In the lower arch, the increase in dental crowding was inversely associated with tooth wear (β=-1.30, p < 0.05) and changes in arch perimeter (β=-0.31, p < 0.05). The other variables did not show significant associations. Conclusion: After 13 years, dental crowding and tooth wear increased, while the arch dimensions tended to decrease. The changes in long-term dental crowding seem to have distinct etiological components for each dental arch. In the mandible, the changes in incisor alignment were associated with increased tooth wear and decreased dental arch dimensions. Whereas in the maxilla, only tooth loss caused alterations in tooth alignment. It is suggested that the effect of increased tooth wear on the etiology of tertiary crowding is of small magnitude and restricted to the lower dental arch. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tribal health is a special concern for India as it has not been addressed holistically in last 75 years of post-independence era. The evidence of present status of health of tribal people which constitutes more than 8.6% of total population is not convincing. Although the information available in bits and pieces shows a dismal picture of their health. They suffer from triple burden of disease and the morbidity profile is poorer than the non-tribal population. Though the tribal people have poor health but it was assumed that uniform national pattern of healthcare would address their unmet health needs. The different terrain, different social environment, and different culture make their healthcare needs different and hence their health remains an unsolved problem. Although, there has been push from government toward their health but a holistic approach to understand their need is important. Collaborative partnerships between tribal communities, healthcare providers, and government agencies are essential to developing culturally appropriate and sustainable solutions that honor their traditional knowledge and provide modern healthcare to them which is accessible and acceptable to them. ABSTRACT: Introduction: The ST population, residing in isolated, underdeveloped areas, faces significant health disparities compared to non-tribal communities. In particular, the lack of mental health infrastructure in these regions exacerbates their health challenges. Tribal communities possess distinct cultural beliefs surrounding health and illness, yet scant information exists regarding their physical and mental well-being. In addition, limited access to mental health services prevails, and many tribal individuals opt for traditional healing methods. Methodology: This study is part of the "Tele-mentoring for Rural Health Organizers of Chhattisgarh (TORENT)" project, which aims to equip rural health organizers and community health officers (CHOs) with training to screen, identify, counsel, refer, and follow up with community members facing mental health issues. Results: Covering 27 districts in Chhattisgarh, this study enlisted trained CHOs to employ the MERIT tool for mental health screenings. Among the tribal population, the study unveiled elevated rates of tobacco and alcohol use, anxiety, depression, hallucinations, and substance use disorders. Challenges in seeking professional help were widespread, driven by transportation difficulties and limited awareness. Field visits (77%) played a pivotal role in identifying cases, alongside self-referrals and referrals by Mitanin or ASHA workers. Notably, a significant proportion had a family history of alcohol use, with a preference for a locally brewed liquor called Mahua. Discussion: This study provides vital insights into the mental health status of Chhattisgarh's tribal populations. It underscores their socioeconomic challenges, high prevalence of substance use disorders, and barriers to accessing mental health services. The study highlights the importance of delivering mental health care within tribal communities, emphasizing the engagement of locally available primary care health workers. Introduction: Extensive literature has investigated the prenatal risk factors of developmental delay in children, with evidence highlighting the impact of prenatal health, mental health, and behavioural factors. While a deficit discourse has underscored Indigenous health research and policies, strengths-based approaches provide an opportunity to reframe this discourse, to illustrate and celebrate the strength and resilience of Australian Indigenous families. As such, this study aimed to identify the protective impact of healthy pregnancy and lifestyle in mothers on developmental delay in Indigenous Australian children; and whether it varies by child birthweight adjusted for gestational age. Further, we also tested whether child birthweight for adjusted gestational age mediates the association between a healthy pregnancy and lifestyle in mothers and developmental delay in their Indigenous offspring. Methods: Strength-based analysis was conducted using data from 8 longitudinal waves of LSIC study in Australia. Random-effect models were used to longitudinally measure the impact of maternal healthy pregnancy and lifestyle on developmental delays in their children between 2008 and 2018. A composite score (ranging from 0 to 3, score = 3 refers to most healthy pregnancy) was created for a healthy pregnancy and lifestyle variable using three criteria − (1) a lack of medical conditions, (2) no substance use including smoking/alcohol/illicit drugs, and (3) intake of iron/folic acid during pregnancy. All models were adjusted for potential covariates. Results: Of the 780 mother-child dyads analysed, 65.4% of mothers reported healthy pregnancy and lifestyle; while 73.5% of children born with a recommended appropriate birthweight adjusted for gestational age, and 91.4% reported no developmental delays. In children born in the recommended range of appropriate birthweight adjusted for gestational age, healthy pregnancy in mothers (most healthy, aOR: 4.76, 95% CI: 1.12–20.18; and 2nd most healthy, aOR: 4.02, 95% CI: 1.09–14.83) was protective against development delay compared to maternal unhealthy pregnancy. Living in remote areas (vs. major city, and regional) was also found to be protective against developmental delay in those who were born within the recommended range of birthweight adjusted for gestational age. Further, the current study found that child birthweight for adjusted gestational age does not have any mediating effect on the association between healthy pregnancy in mothers and developmental delay in their children. Conclusion: This strengths-based study suggests healthy pregnancy in mothers should be advocated to prevent developmental delay in their offspring in the Australian Indigenous population. The findings also found living in remote areas has a protective effect against developmental delay in Indigenous children who born within the recommended range of birthweight adjusted for gestational age. These findings have implications for challenging and reframing the deficit discourse surrounding Indigenous Australian health research and policymaking. Further studies are needed to investigate the positive relationship between Indigenous Australians' health and social and emotional well-being (SEWB) and their connection to their country and culture. Improving social and emotional well-being (SEWB) among Indigenous adolescents is crucial. Since neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) are common in Indigenous people and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are important contributors to negative health outcomes throughout the lifespan, we investigated whether limited ACE exposure is associated with reduced risk of NDDs in Australian Indigenous teens using the data from multiple waves (Wave 1 to Wave 9, and Wave 11) of the Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children (LSIC). We also examined the role of other protective factors, such as Indigenous cultural identity and school connectedness, against NDDs. A strengths-based approach using mixed-effects logistic regression models examined the protective effect of limited ACE exposure (from LSIC waves 1–9) on NDDs (outcome from LSIC wave 11), adjusting for sociodemographic factors. The NDDs included autism, ADHD, intellectual, neurological, and specific learning disabilities. Of the 370 individuals analysed, 73.2% valued Indigenous cultural identity, and 70.5% were strongly connected at school. More than one-fourth (27.8%) reported limited ACE exposure, while the majority was not diagnosed with NDDs (93%). Longitudinal analysis revealed limited ACE exposure was 6.01 times (95% CI: 1.26–28.61; p = 0.024) more likely to be protective against NDDs compared to those exposed to multiple ACEs. Moreover, valuing cultural identity (aOR = 2.81; 95% CI: 1.06–7.39; p = 0.038) and girls (aOR = 13.88; 95% CI: 3.06–62.84; p = 0.001) were protective against NDDs compared to their respective counterparts. Our findings highlight the need to prevent ACE exposure and promote Indigenous cultural identity in preventing negative health outcomes and the exacerbation of health inequities to strengthen the SEWB of Indigenous communities. Objectives: Despite cervical cancer (CC) being a preventable disease, its incidence remains high in marginalized communities due to inequalities that restrict access to health services. This article investigates the experiences, perceptions, and attitudes regarding the screening of indigenous women in a region of the Colombian Amazon during a cervical cancer prevention initiative facilitated by community participation. Design: Qualitative study based on interviews conducted with women and indigenous leaders from Paujil reserve. They participated in research focused on cervical cancer prevention, which employed a methodology of collaboration between academia and communities aimed at enhancing women's health and reducing inequalities in access to healthcare services. The analysis utilized a deductive and inductive approach. Results: Five main themes were addressed: 'Barriers within health services'; 'Individual and cultural constraints'; 'Motivations and facilitators'; 'Positive experiences within the research framework'; and 'Suggestions for encouraging women's participation.' Challenges related to appointment scheduling and result delivery were frequently cited as obstacles to access. Misinformation, feelings of shame, fear, and distrust towards health services played significant roles in the reluctance to undergo screening. Factors such as support from family and community networks, respectful treatment, ease of scheduling appointments, the presence of female healthcare professionals, and involvement of leaders fluent in indigenous languages were identified as positive facilitators of screening acceptance. Conclusion: Understanding the factors that influence access to screening is crucial for reducing inequalities in service delivery for indigenous women. The involvement of trained leaders who can identify these factors and motivate women can have a positive impact on the acceptance and guidance of cervical cancer prevention programs. This study examines the internal migration patterns among Mexico's Indigenous population from 1990 to 2020. We begin by estimating the total interstate migration flows for Indigenous groups and employ an advanced interaction component model to identify migration flows that exceed expectations. This model allows us to detect significant deviations and patterns within the migration data. Additionally, we apply network analysis techniques to identify states that are central to these migration flows and categorize states into distinct communities based on their migration interactions. Our findings reveal that Indigenous migration exhibits higher‐than‐expected flows, particularly from the West Central and North regions of Mexico. By contrast, non‐Indigenous migration shows greater flows, predominantly in the southern and central states. Through network analysis, particularly the use of eigenvector centrality, we identify Nayarit and Durango as key hubs for Indigenous migration, whereas Estado de Mexico and Ciudad de Mexico emerge as central nodes in non‐Indigenous migration. Our study highlights the growing significance of Mexico's northern region, with Nuevo León playing a crucial role in Indigenous and non‐Indigenous migration flow networks. This study's findings contribute valuable insights regarding the spatial dynamics of internal migration and the evolving migration patterns of Indigenous populations in Mexico. This article discusses current expressions violence in Central America based on the foundational book “Harvest of Violence in Guatemala” edited by Robert M. Carmack in 1988, and the panel “Central America beyond post-conflict: making and unmaking contemporaneity” presented at the Europan Association of Social Anthropology in July of 2024. Placing both compilations of ethnographic work side by side, allows us to observe the violence continuum in the region and reflect on what the anthropological work can provide to a regional understanding of post-conflict societies.

Background: Māori have historically seen a lower rate of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) compared to New Zealand's non‐Māori population. Recent reports have shown an increasing rate of IBD among Māori patients. Aim: We performed a study to identify the phenotypes of IBD in the Māori population. Methods: Patients with IBD of Māori ethnicity were retrospectively identified from four large regions of New Zealand. Electronic records were reviewed to collect details of patients' demographics, phenotypes and clinical features. Results: We identified 165 Māori patients with IBD, of whom 74 (45.4%) had Crohn disease (CD), 86 (53.5%) had ulcerative colitis (UC) and 5 (3.0%) had IBD‐unclassified (IBD‐U). There were more female (61.8%) patients compared to male (38.2%). This was attributed to the higher ratio of female patients with CD over male (73.9% vs 26.1%), whereas sex was evenly distributed in UC (female 52.2%, male 48.8%). Ileocolonic CD was most frequently seen (36.2%), and the majority had non‐stricturing disease (62.3%) with the absence of perianal involvement (78.2%). Bimodal age peaks were observed, with a first peak at 25–29 years and a second peak at 45–49 years. There was a five‐fold increase in the incidence of IBD in Māori over 20 years. Conclusions: We present the largest study describing IBD in Māori. IBD phenotypes in Māori were similar to previous regional IBD reports, but there was a significantly higher proportion of female patients with CD in Māori and an earlier second age peak at 45–49 years. Focal Epithelial Hyperplasia or Multifocal Epithelial Hyperplasia (MEH), also known as Heck's disease, is considered a rare pathology of the oral mucosa associated with human papillomavirus types 13 and 32. For reasons not fully understood, MEH disproportionally affects specific populations of indigenous groups around the world. After the first reports in Native Americans, the epidemiology of the disease has been described in different geographical regions mainly related to particular indigenous populations, the majority of the studies are clinical case reports, but the biological determinants are still unknown. Some suggested risk factors include chronic irritation caused by smoking, a galvanic current, vitamin A deficiency, and/or a familial-genetic predisposition; however, the scientific evidence is not solid due the scarcity of case-control studies or longitudinal cohorts. In light of the evidence, further study of the pathology of MEH should be considered and proper clinical trials for effective treatments should be designed. The disease warrants further study as it is considered as neglected by research and it affects rural/remote population groups usually living in adverse socioeconomic conditions. To gather knowledge and experiences from Squamish Nation citizens to codevelop a model of foraging walks for Indigenous women's heart health. Qualitative study (sharing circles). Vancouver, Canada (virtual). Squamish Nation community members (n = 9), Elders or Knowledge Keepers (n = 5), and researchers (n = 2). Community-led foraging walks as a culturally safe nutrition education strategy. Perspectives and experiences. Content analysis and narrative synthesis. Personal experiences of foraging walks or knowledge of traditional plants were limited for most participants, and all desired to learn more about traditional foods using land-based activities. Participants identified a lack of nutrition education surrounding heart health and common mistreatment and judgment from health professionals. Participants identified important elements of a future Squamish program, including who should be involved, how to implement it, and the most effective temporal and physical setting. All agreed foraging walks help promote 5 dimensions of heart health (physical, emotional, spiritual, mental, and social) through physical activity, purposeful nutrition, and connection to community and culture. Findings from the sharing circles were used in the creation of a template for future foraging sessions and contributed to plant identification cards for the whole community. Community-based pilot studies to test foraging walks as a culturally safe and environmental approach to nutrition education and cardiovascular health awareness for Indigenous communities are warranted. Research to examine the similarities and differences across Indigenous groups related to understanding heart health and land-based practices for nutrition education and heart health awareness is needed. This text deals with the case of the Castilian language schools in the Indigenous villages of the bishopric of Antequera at the beginning of the 19th century and their objective of teaching this language to the population and instructing them in the 'mysteries' of the Catholic religion. The work is based on two of the questions in a questionnaire that Bishop Antonio Bergosa y Jordán sent between 1802-1804 to the parish priests of the diocese and that are in relation to the languages spoken and the functioning of the schools. The questionnaire presents information about the linguistic and school situation at the parish level, as well as the perceptions of the priests, and those they attribute to the Indigenous population, regarding the schools and its purposes. In most cases, it is mentioned that poverty and the 'resistance' of the Indigenous people, as well as the non-attendance of children at school, did not allow the schools' objective to be achieved. Issue Addressed: Water is vital to Australian First Nations Peoples' connection to country and culture. Despite this cultural significance, and epidemiological studies identifying elevated drowning risk among Australian First Nations Peoples, extremely limited qualitative research explores water safety beliefs and practices of First Nations Peoples. This study addressed this knowledge gap via qualitative research with Wiradjuri people living in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales. Methods: Under Aboriginal Reference Group guidance, a local researcher recruited participants using purposive sampling for yarning circles across four groups: young people aged 18–30 years, parents of children under 5, parents of older children and adolescents and Elders. Yarning circles were audio recorded, transcribed and thematically coded using an inductive approach. Results: In total, 10 First Nations individuals participated. Yarning led to rich insights and yielded five themes: families as first educators; importance of storytelling, lived experience and respect for knowledge holders; the river as a place of connection; historical influence on preference for river over pool and river is unpredictable and needs to be respected. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the importance of First Nations culture to water safety practices, particularly around the river. To reduce drowning risk among First Nations populations, knowledge holders need to be embedded in the design and delivery of community water safety education. So What?: Co‐designing water safety initiatives with First Nations Peoples will have dual benefits; developing culturally appropriate and locally relevant water safety education, while also continuing First Nations culture across generations. AbstractObjective: To generate normative data (ND) for executive functions tests in the Waranka minority population of Ecuador. Method: Four-hundred participants aged 6–17 completed the Symbol-Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), Trail-Making Test (TMT), Modified-Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (M-WCST), and Test of Colors-Words (STROOP). Scores were normed using multiple linear regressions, including age, age2, natural logarithm of mean parent education (MPE), sex, bilingualism, and two-way interactions as predictors. Results: Age by MPE and Age2 by MPE interactions arose for SDMT, so that children with illiterate parents scored lower than those with literate parents. Girls scored higher in SDMT. All TMT and M-WCST scores were influenced by age2. Age by MPE interaction was found for TMT–A, so that children with higher MPE went faster; and age by bilingualism interaction for TMT–B, so that more bilingual children needed less time. Stroop-Word and Color were influenced by age2 by MPE interaction, so that children, while older, scored higher, especially those with higher MPE. Also, age2 by sex interaction arose, so that girls increased scores curvilinearly while boys linearly. Word-Color was influenced by age, while Stroop-interference by age2. Age by MPE interaction was found for MCST-Categories and Perseveration, so that perseverations decreased to then increased, especially in those with illiterate parents. M-WCST-Category scores increased to then decrease later on age in children with illiterate parents. Z-scores calculated through indigenous ND were significantly lower than generated through non-indigenous norms. Objectives: To characterise unintentional injury‐related hospitalisation and mortality amongst older adults (aged 50+ years) in the Lakes and Bay of Plenty District Health Boards of Aotearoa New Zealand and to examine whether hospitalisation patterns differed by ethnicity. Methods: This observational study analysed unintentional injury‐related hospitalisations and deaths among older adults between 2014 and 2018. Routinely collected national data sets were used to calculate annualised, age‐standardised injury rates. The independent variable of interest was ethnicity (Māori or non‐Māori). Results: There were 11,834 unintentional injury‐related hospitalisations in the study period (n = 1444 for Māori). Overall, there was no significant difference in the age‐standardised hospitalisation rate between Māori and non‐Māori (Standardised Rate Ratio [SRR] = 0.96 [95% CI 0.90, 1.02]). Falls were the most common mechanism of injury among Māori and non‐Māori overall (50% and 71%) and relative risks of falls increased with age. Non‐Māori were 57% less likely to be hospitalised for unintentional poisoning than Māori (SRR = 0.43, [0.34, 0.59]). Conclusions: The mechanisms of injury, and variation in unintentional injury‐related hospitalisation rates between Māori and non‐Māori, change throughout older age, and incidence increase0073 with age. Falls cause significant injury‐related hospitalisations for older Māori and responsive injury prevention and rehabilitation efforts are warranted to achieve equitable health outcomes. Radiotherapy is focused on the tumor but also reaches healthy tissues, causing toxicities that are possibly related to genomic factors. In this context, radiogenomics can help reduce the toxicity, increase the effectiveness of radiotherapy, and personalize treatment. It is important to consider the genomic profiles of populations not yet studied in radiogenomics, such as the indigenous Amazonian population. Thus, our objective was to analyze important genes for radiogenomics, such as ATM, TGFB1, RAD51, AREG, XRCC4, CDK1, MEG3, PRKCE, TANC1, and KDR, in indigenous people and draw a radiogenomic profile of this population. The NextSeq 500® platform was used for sequencing reactions; for differences in the allelic frequency between populations, Fisher's Exact Test was used. We identified 39 variants, 2 of which were high impact: 1 in KDR (rs41452948) and another in XRCC4 (rs1805377). We found four modifying variants not yet described in the literature in PRKCE. We did not find any variants in TANC1—an important gene for personalized medicine in radiotherapy—that were associated with toxicities in previous cohorts, configuring a protective factor for indigenous people. We identified four SNVs (rs664143, rs1801516, rs1870377, rs1800470) that were associated with toxicity in previous studies. The American Indian population is known to experience high rates of cardiovascular disease and have a heightened vulnerability to severe outcomes driven by an overall poor health status and lower access to quality health care. Our group has previously published an analysis demonstrating that American Indians have the highest risk of atrial fibrillation (AF), as well as of AF-related stroke, when compared with other races and ethnicities. Despite this, AF in this population has not been extensively studied and additional publications are scarce. Our review article provides an up-to-date summary of the relevant literature addressing the relationship between race, ethnicity, and AF by focusing on American Indians.

Article 366(25) of the Indian constitution refers to indigenous people as “scheduled tribes,” which constitute 8.6% of the country’s population. For decades, the health of the tribal people had remained neglected and incorporated in rural health care because of incorrect assumptions of their similar health needs to that of the rural population. An expert committee coordinating with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs provided a detailed report on the current scenario and recommendations related to tribal health in India. They considered the health-care needs of the tribal population, highlighted their specific health problems, and gave a roadmap of best approaches. The tribal population has a unique and higher burden of health problems than the mainstream population, influenced by their health-seeking behavior, lack of awareness and education, sociocultural and magico-religious beliefs, customs, and practices. The current health-care system incorporates their health needs with approaches such as differing population norms in tribal areas, nonmonetary incentives to staff, mobile medical units, identification of high-priority districts, and the emergence of the “Swasthya” portal. However, tribal health is transitioning as with the rest of the population. Moreover, the present health-care services are unable to address this. Legal recognition of indigenous peoples’ rights to self-determination, their land, natural resources, and their knowledge is a need of the hour.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infection caused by SARS-CoV-2. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have suggested a strong association of genetic factors with the severity of the disease. However, many of these studies have been completed in European populations, and little is known about the genetic variability of indigenous peoples' underlying infection by SARS-CoV-2. The objective of the study is to investigate genetic variants present in the genes AQP3, ARHGAP27, ELF5L, IFNAR2, LIMD1, OAS1 and UPK1A, selected due to their association with the severity of COVID-19, in a sample of indigenous people from the Brazilian Amazon in order to describe potential new and already studied variants. We performed the complete sequencing of the exome of 64 healthy indigenous people from the Brazilian Amazon. The allele frequency data of the population were compared with data from other continental populations. A total of 66 variants present in the seven genes studied were identified, including a variant with a high impact on the ARHGAP27 gene (rs201721078) and three new variants located in the Amazon Indigenous populations (INDG) present in the AQP3, IFNAR2 and LIMD1 genes, with low, moderate and modifier impact, respectively. In the Mixtec language or Tu'un Savi the word future does not exist, however, among the people who assume themselves to be part of the People of the Rain or Ñuu Savi; population of indigenous origin in southern Mexico, there is the notion of what will happen after tomorrow / Nchaa ntu Inee or later / Tyi nuu ga. There are also different horizons about the time to come for their indigenous culture, which are configured from the diversity of this ethnic group and the mechanisms of action they devise to give continuity to their customs and traditions. This text reflects on the elements to be taken into account in order to carry out the ethnography of the future of an ethnic identity that is present in the 21st century. Based on two cases that arise in communities of the Mixtec region of the state of Oaxaca and with the support of the theoretical notions of the anthropology of the future, the elements that come into play to sustain the validity of the Ñuu Savi culture are presented. Warning that this is not a finished reflection, but rather, it intends to open ways to discuss, from anthropology, the approach of a temporality previously overlooked in the theoretical and methodological device of our discipline. Focal Epithelial Hyperplasia or Multifocal Epithelial Hyperplasia (MEH), also known as Heck’s disease, is considered a rare pathology of the oral mucosa associated with human papillomavirus types 13 and 32. For reasons not fully understood, MEH disproportionally affects specific populations of indigenous groups around the world. After the first reports in Native Americans, the epidemiology of the disease has been described in different geographical regions mainly related to particular indigenous populations, the majority of the studies are clinical case reports, but the biological determinants are still unknown. Some suggested risk factors include chronic irritation caused by smoking, a galvanic current, vitamin A deficiency, and/or a familial-genetic predisposition; however, the scientific evidence is not solid due the scarcity of case-control studies or longitudinal cohorts. In light of the evidence, further study of the pathology of MEH should be considered and proper clinical trials for effective treatments should be designed. The disease warrants further study as it is considered as neglected by research and it affects rural/remote population groups usually living in adverse socioeconomic conditions.

IntroductionThis study aimed to understand the sociocultural context of teenage pregnancy in an Ecuadorian city with a large indigenous population, to gauge the acceptability of a multifaceted pregnancy prevention program for adolescents, and to elicit perspectives on the optimal program design from adolescents and adult key informants.MethodsWe ascertained qualitative data via an online, electronic survey administered from August to September 2020. Open- and closed-ended questions elicited perspectives relating to burden of adolescent pregnancies, acceptability of pregnancy prevention programs, and optimal design of future programs. Twenty-four adolescents (13–19 years of age) and 15 adult key informants working in the healthcare, business, and education sectors in Cotacachi completed the survey. Survey responses were analyzed using a structural and in vivo coding, and an inductive approach to consensus-building around key themes.ResultsMost adolescent survey respondents (75%) believed that teen pregnancy is “fairly common” in Cotacachi, and 41.7% believed differences in teen pregnancy rates are not associated with ethnicity. In comparison, 66.7% of adult survey respondents said teen pregnancy disproportionately occurs among indigenous teenagers. Additionally, 45.8% of adolescent and 80% of adult survey respondents believed that a comprehensive sexual education program would help reduce teenage pregnancy rates by imparting reliable sexual health knowledge. Adult respondents noted that the past programs were unsuccessful in preventing teenage pregnancy because of these programs’ inability to fully engage teenagers’ attention, very short time duration, or inappropriate consideration of cultural context.DiscussionIn Cotacachi, Ecuador, a sexual health education program is both desired and feasible according to adult and teenager key informants. A successful program must adapt to the cultural context and engage youth participation and attention.

Abstract Background Human rabies outbreak transmitted by bats continues to be a relevant public health problem not only in the Amazon region. The disease has affected one of the areas with the greatest poverty in southeastern Brazil, a region inhabited by the Maxakali indigenous people. Case presentation We describe four cases of rabies among indigenous children that occurred in the indigenous village of Pradinho, municipality of Bertópolis, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Cases were notified between April and May 2022, all of whom died on average eight days after the first symptoms. All cases were observed in rural residents under 12 years of age. The probable form of exposure was through bat bites. The predominant symptoms were prostration, fever, dyspnea, sialorrhea, tachycardia, and altered level of consciousness. Half of the cases underwent late and/or incomplete post-exposure rabies prophylaxis, however, the other half underwent pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis, with only one case completing the scheme and another undergoing the adapted Milwaukee Protocol (Recife Protocol). All cases ended in death. Conclusions This was the first rabies outbreak among indigenous people in Brazil. Among the manifested clinical forms in the series, there was a disease atypical presentation in at least one case. We suggest active surveillance and an intercultural educational campaign to prevent new cases. Graphical abstract

Objective: To describe and analyze the evaluations regarding traditional food among a group of migrant indigenous women residing in the metropolitan area of Monterrey (AMM), As well as the strategies used to exercise their food knowledge. Methodology: A qualitative investigation was carried out through interviews with 10 indigenous migrant women. Results: It was found that for the participants, recreating their recipes from yesteryear is a source of pride and there is a daily effort to reproduce them, despite the difficulties in doing so. They report that in the countryside people eat in a more "natural" and "tasty" way because there is a productive and emotional bond with food. Likewise, it was observed that the strategies to recreate their recipes are to buy in markets that sell products from their towns, and for their relatives to send them food from their communities. Limitations: Some of the interviews were done by telephone, so it was not possible to pay attention to the body language of some migrant women. Introduction: The Indigenous People living in the surrounding areas of the lower course of the Amazon River have little and outdated epidemiological information on oral health. The access to oral health is a distant reality for this population and the precariousness of primary health care in these regions is alarming, thus access to oral health care becomes an unmet need. Objective: This experience report aims to contribute to a critical reflection on the barriers to access to oral health for the Sateré-Mawé Indigenous People of the Andirá-Marau Indigenous Reserve (Amazonas, Brazil). Case report: Traditional medicine practiced by healers proved to be active in the region, nevertheless, the precariousness of access to institutionalized health in Indigenous Health Districts is also part of the reality of these peoples, being justified by the difficulty of traveling to the regions with professionals and specialists. This situation reflects on the sparse results of the available health surveys, which show they have worse oral health conditions compared to the non-indigenous population. The objective of this study was to understand the organizing principles of the social representations of democracy in higher education students in Colombia, and their anchoring in sociodemographic and territorial variables. In three periods of time (2010, 2012 and 2017) students at university and technical/technological careers (total number: 12,171) from the 32 capital cities of each department in Colombia responded to a Scale of Social Representations of Democracy (ERSD) and to a list of sociodemographic variables. In a macro-level analysis, departmental averages of Democracy Balance were crossed with macro indicators of crime, extreme poverty, life expectancy and indigenous population percentage. Results show a seven dimensions factorial structure without significant relationships with age, gender or social class. At a macro level, regions with a high proportion of indigenous population showed a more positive evaluation of democracy over time, while higher crime rates are associated with a more negative evaluation of democracy. The purpose of the study: to analyze the breast cancer incidence and breast cancer risk factors for the population of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in 2011-2020. Material and Methods. The incidence of breast cancer in the population of Yakutia was analyzed using the data collected from population-based cancer registries of the Russian cancer statistics covering the period 2011-2020. The analysis of breast cancer risk factors was carried out using the data from systematic reviews published over the past 5 years (2018-2022). Results. The age-standardized incidence rates of breast cancer among the indigenous population of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) were lower than those in other Siberian ethnic groups and the Slavic population, amounting to 12.7 per 100,000 population. The rise in the breast cancer incidence rates in the region for 2011-2020 was associated with the aging of the population, since the trend in the population growth was not observed in the analysis of age-standardized rates. Conclusion. The breast cancer incidence rates among the indigenous population of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) are significantly lower compared to those observed in other ethnic groups living in Siberia. The rise in the breast cancer incidence rates in Yakutia is related to the aging of the population. The low age-standardized breast cancer incidence rates may be explained by a low consumption of hormonal agents and natural reproductive behavior. The search for ethno-specific mutations associated with breast cancer in the Yakut population as endogenous risk factors is of great importance. Further studies are required to elucidate the role of North-adaptive genetic mutations in the development of breast cancer. The assessment of the role of natural polyphenolic compounds, the content of which is high in wild berries (historically, a significant proportion of the food consumed by indigenous people), as a protective factor, is promising.

Chronic diseases within Indigenous communities constitute the most compelling ill-health burdens and treatment inequalities, particularly in rural and remote Australia. In response to these vital issues, a systematic literature review of the adoption of wearable, Artificial Intelligence-driven, electrocardiogram sensors, in a telehealth Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) context was conducted to scale up rural Indigenous health. To this end, four preselected scientific databases were chosen for data extraction to align with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) technique. From the initially collected (n=4436) articles, a total of 32 articles were analysed, being synthesised from the review inclusion criteria, maintaining strict eligibility and eliminating duplicates. None of the various studies found on this innovative healthcare intervention has given a comprehensive picture of how this could be an effective method of care dedicated to rural Indigenous communities with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Herein, we presented the unique concepts of IoMT-driven wearable biosensors tailored for rural indigenous cardiac patients, their clinical implications, and cardiovascular disease management within the telehealth domain. This work contributes to understanding the adoption of wearable IoMT sensor-driven telehealth model, highlighting the need for real-time data from First Nations patients in rural and remote areas for CVD prevention. Pertinent implications, research impacts, limitations and future research directions are endorsed, securing long-term Wearable IoMT sensor-driven telehealth sustainability.

First Nations people in remote Australia hold important historical and local knowledge on how to respond effectively to environmental changes and extreme environmental conditions. However, there has been comparatively little attention paid to the use of First Nations people's environmental knowledge to devise environmental health responses or the effects of various environmental factors on remote residents’ health and well-being. The report explores environmental health injustice among First Nations people living in remote Australia caused by inadequate engagement of remote community members and remote health professionals in environmental health decision-making, a lack of continuous environmental monitoring in remote locations and reliance on health outcome data sets that do not reflect the actual environmental health effects on remote residents. Such environmental health injustice affects people's right to have information on the constituents of the environment they interact with daily and contributes to the lost opportunity to capitalize on local cultural knowledge to create successful environmental health responses for remote residents of Australia.

Gastric Cancer is a disease associated with environmental and genetic changes, becoming one of the most prevalent cancers around the world and with a high incidence in Brazil. However, despite being a highly studied neoplastic type, few efforts are aimed at populations with a unique background and genetic profile, such as the indigenous peoples of the Brazilian Amazon. Our study characterized the molecular profile of five genes associated with the risk of developing gastric cancer by sequencing the complete exome of 64 indigenous individuals belonging to 12 different indigenous populations in the Amazon. The analysis of the five genes found a total of 207 variants, of which 15 are new in our indigenous population, and among these are two with predicted high impact, present in the TTN and CDH1 genes. In addition, at least 20 variants showed a significant difference in the indigenous population in comparison with other world populations, and three are already associatively related to some type of cancer. Our study reaffirms the unique genetic profile of the indigenous population of the Brazilian Amazon and allows us to contribute to the conception of early diagnosis of complex diseases such as cancer, improving the quality of life of individuals potentially suffering from the disease.
