This paper examines the question of doing information systems (IS) research from a location, particularly from a developing country like India. Our analysis reveals that IS publications from India are relatively few in number, though increasing in recent years; hardly focussed on context‐specific issues and concerns; and are largely in lower‐ranked journals. Using neo‐institutional theory, we show that the reasons are dominantly coercive (measuring up to rankings and accreditation agencies) and mimetic (following leaders). Normative (influence of professional bodies) forces appear to counterbalance this by necessitating continuous improvement in research outputs and emphasising location‐specific, impactful research. Institutional responses to these forces manifest in policies and mechanisms to operationalise them, such as resource availability, balancing teaching load with research expectations, promotion and tenure policies amongst others. We examine the paths by which more rigorous and relevant research, responsible to a location can be achieved, based on the insights from a series of talks given by eminent IS scholars. We opine that there is a need to consciously seek out such paths, perhaps by actively seeking collaboration with other disciplines and practitioners; establishing programmes of research; and building contextualised theories. Design science research is typically used to conduct research in the information systems space. Design science research has also existed for many years, and might be seen as a daunting task when first undertaken by inexperienced researchers. This is most likely due to the various approaches and terminologies that exist for conducting design science research. Therefore, this paper proposes a tailor-made approach for inexperienced researchers to conduct design science research. Accordingly, this approach aims to specifically assist researchers to develop an artefact as a research contribution in an environment where the artefact is developed and evaluated concurrently in close collaboration with stakeholders. Background: Local anesthetics (LAs) are regularly used to alleviate pain during medical or surgical procedures. Their use is generally considered safe, but exceeding the maximum recommended doses can lead to LA systemic toxicity, a rare but potentially lethal complication. Determining maximum safe doses is therefore mandatory before performing local anesthesia, but rules are often unclear and the factors affecting dose calculation are numerous. Mobile health apps have been shown to help clinical decision-making, but most currently available apps present significant limitations. The Local Anesthetics Dose Calculator (LoAD Calc) app was designed to overcome these limitations by taking all relevant parameters into account. Before deploying this app in a clinical setting, it should be tested to determine its effectiveness and whether clinicians would be willing to use it. Objective: The primary objective will be to evaluate the effectiveness of the LoAD Calc app through written simulated cases. The secondary objective will be to determine whether physicians find this app easier, faster, and safer than the methods they generally use. Methods: We describe a parallel-group randomized controlled trial protocol. Anesthesiologists working at the Geneva University Hospitals will be invited to participate. Participants will be asked to compute the maximum dose of LA in 10 simulated clinical cases using 3 different LAs. The maximum safe dose will be determined manually using the same calculation rules that were used to develop LoAD Calc, without using the app itself. An overdose will be considered any dose higher than the correct dose, rounded to the superior integer, while an underdose will be defined as the optimal calculated dose minus 20%, rounded to the inferior integer. Randomization will be stratified according to current position (resident vs registrar). The participants allocated to the LoAD Calc (experimental) group will use the LoAD Calc app to compute the maximum safe LA doses. Those allocated to the control group will be asked to use the method they generally use. The primary outcome will be the overall overdose rate. Secondary outcomes will include the overdose rate according to ideal and actual body weight and to each specific LA, the overall underdose rate, and the time taken to complete these calculations. The app's usability will also be assessed. Results: A sample size of 46 participants will be needed to detect a difference of 10% with a power of 90%. Thus, a target of 50 participants was set to allow for attrition and exclusion criteria. We expect recruitment to begin during the winter of 2023, data analysis in the spring of 2024, and results by the end of 2024. Conclusions: This study should determine whether LoAD Calc, a mobile health app designed to compute maximum safe LA doses, is safer and more efficient than traditional LA calculation methods. Digital nudging interventions have emerged as soft-paternalistic mechanisms for reducing heuristic limitations and biases in decision-making environments. Prior research has conceptualized digital nudging interventions as subtle modifications in the decision-making environment that nudge a decision maker towards better choices without limiting other alternatives. The approach has received criticism as researchers have achieved limited consensus on its definition, categorized diverse behavior-modulation methodologies as digital nudging, and raised multiple ethical concerns about it. Such ambiguity reduces fidelity while challenging synthesis, application, and replication. In this paper, we posit the need to broaden the definition of digital nudging interventions, reconcile the inconsistencies, and present a coherent frame. Based on a systematic review of the extant literature, we propose an extended definition that is coherent with the libertarian-paternalistic principle, clarifying the intent of digital nudging interventions, and delineating the nature of the digital artifacts involved. The last two decades have witnessed a surge of sociotechnical theories used to examine information systems (IS) research, attributable, to increase rigor. It, therefore, necessitates innovative ways and usefulness in applying the theories in IS research. Inevitably, it leads to complementarity of some of the theories, whereby, activity theory (AT) and actor-network theory (ANT), and structuration theory (ST) and ANT have been combined in IS studies, in recent years. Despite the efforts, there is a need for complementarity of more theories, to cover extended scopes and increase rigor in the phenomenon being studied. This paper proposes a theoretical framework that combines AT and ST, for data analysis and interpretation of findings in IS research. Extant literature has increased our understanding of the multifaceted nature of the digital divide, showing that it entails more than access to information and communication resources. Research indicates that digital inequality mirrors to a significant extent offline inequality related to socioeconomic resources. Bridging digital divides is critical for sustainable digitalized societies. Ιn this paper, we present a literature review of Information Systems research on the digital divide within settings with advanced technological infrastructures and economies over the last decade (2010–2020). The review results are organized in a concept matrix mapping contributing factors and measures for crossing the divides. Building on the results, we elaborate a research agenda that proposes [1] extending established models of digital inequalities with new variables and use of theory, [2] critically examining the effects of digital divide interventions, and [3] better linking digital divide research with research on sustainability. Expanding on the current debate on the issues of statistical and practical significance in information systems research, where the article by Sen, Smith, and Van Note is a recent contribution, this commentary cautions against conflating relevance with practical significance. We emphasize that relevance is 1) about the real-world usefulness of research findings rather than their impressiveness for the researcher audience, 2) an essential quality of research spanning beyond its findings and not merely limited to statistical studies, and 3) determined by nonacademics rather than academics. We also comment on other aspects of the article by Sen et al., such as the term "practical importance," the treatment of effect size measures, and the presentation of "marginal effects.". The COVID‐19 pandemic demanded an immediate response from the research community, including adjustment to how researchers undertake research. As in many fields, information systems scholars attempted 'rapid response' research that addresses the immediate crisis. This paper reviews the state of the immediate research and scholarly discussion in the information systems field. Seventy‐one journal papers are reviewed. The review categorises nine thematic areas and one broad area of discussion. The methods by which information systems scholars address immediate research questions are identified. The contributions are discussed, future research directions are outlined and a model is proposed that traces the pathway from initiation of research/generation of new knowledge to practice impact. The article discusses the relation of information science (IS) research to electronic health records (EHR). Topics include possibilities for collaboration between IS scholars and allied healthcare practitioners; the roles of patients, providers, and purveyors as stakeholders in EHR; and the need for common standards and system interoperability to implement EHR. The use of data analysis in relation to EHR is addressed.

Despite the richness of African proverbs, they have been muted in information systems (IS) research. This explicitly contributes to the lag in developing information systems and technology solutions for African people by African researchers in African terms. It is on this basis that two related objectives were formulated: (1) to examine the role which African proverbs can play in further advancing IS research, and (2) to understand how the concept can be employed to indigenize IS research. Qualitative data were collected from different sources, and the dimension of social change from structuration theory was employed to examine the role African proverbs can significantly play in advancing IS research. The analysis reveals that African proverbs can be employed in all stages of IS research, from problematizing the phenomenon, data collection to data analysis and interpretation of findings. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected world-wide business and management immensely. Furthermore, challenges and opportunities for information systems research during and after coronavirus have emerged. To better understand the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic in the field of information systems (IS), and also as a part of the 2020 AIS SIG-ISAP Workshop on Information Systems in Asia Pacific (ISAP) being held prior ICIS-2020, we organized a panel to address this important issue with three distinguished information systems researchers. The panelists identified and discussed the challenges and opportunities for information systems research during and after Coronavirus. In addition, constructive suggestions for aspiring young scholars who aim to publish their works in top-tier IS journals have been proposed, which may benefit the IS community in large. The Journal of Organizational Computing and Electronic Commerce (JOCEC) is entering its 31st year since its inception. This paper examines the history and impact of JOCEC and highlights its significant contributions. We analyze the impact of the journal's research articles using emerging metrics, such as CrossRef, Google Citations, and Altmetrics. The results show the relationship between these new metrics and views and citation counts. We also identify the most influential publications, authors, and topics over the past 30 years. Event studies are based on the theoretical framework of efficient capital markets and the notion that security prices include all information available to the market. As a result, announcements made by firms provide to market participants information that can be impounded into the market price. This paper investigates the use of event studies in information systems and accounting information systems research using a three-pronged approach. First, this paper provides a comprehensive survey of research that uses event study methodologies, where the events are announcements made by firms about issues related to information systems, e.g., announcements of the adoption of enterprise resource planning systems and of the effect of security breaches in firms' information systems. Second, this paper summarizes event study methodologies used in prior research, along with some of the key parameters and concerns associated with their implementation. This paper investigates research from the Journal of Organizational Computing and Electronic Commerce over the time frame 2016–2020 and captures the primary topics of those most cited papers in order to better understand those research topics of greatest interest. In addition, this paper performs a bibliometric analysis of those papers, analyzing citations, views, and other factors associated with those papers. As part of that analysis, this paper finds that the number of views of a paper, is related to Altmetric activity and whether or not a paper is available on open access. The paper also finds that the number of Google, Dimensions and Crossref citations are correlated and positively related to the number of Views and the amount of Altmetric activity. Throughout its history, the information systems (IS) discipline has engaged in extensive self-examination, particularly with regard to its apparent diversity. Our overall objective in this study is to better understand the diversity in IS research, and the extent to which diversity is universal across journals that publish IS research. We developed a classification system that comprises five key characteristics of diversity (reference discipline, level of analysis, topic, research approach, and research method) based on a review of prior literature. We then examined articles over a five-year period, from 1995 to 1999, in five journals acknowledged as the top journals of the field, at least in North America. Analyses reveal considerable diversity in each of the key characteristics. Perhaps not surprisingly, the research approach used is more focused with most studies being conducted using hypothetico-deductive approaches, whereas reference discipline is perhaps the most diverse of the characteristics examined. An interesting finding is that IS itself emerged as a key reference discipline in the late 1990s. The 'Journal of Management Information Systems' and 'Information Systems Research' publish articles displaying the greatest diversity, and 'MIS Quarterly' and 'Decision Sciences' publish articles that focus on subsets of the field. Our research provides a foundation for addressing the direction that diversity in the IS discipline takes over time. In the shorter term, researchers can use our classification system as a guide to writing abstracts and selecting key words, and the findings of our journal analyses to determine the best outlet for their type of research. The challenges of IT adoption in the healthcare sector have generated much interest across a range of research communities, including Information Systems (IS) and Health Informatics (HI). Given their long-standing interest in IT design, development, implementation, and adoption to improve productivity and support organisational transformation, the IS and HI fields are highly correlated in their research interests. Nevertheless, the two fields serve different academic audiences, have different research foci, and theorise IT artifacts differently. We investigate the dyadic relationship between health information systems (HIS) research in IS and HI through the communication patterns between the two fields. We present the citation analysis results of HIS research published in IS and HI journals between 2000 and 2020. The results revealed that despite the two fields sharing a common interest, communication between them is limited and only about specific topics. Potentially relevant ideas and theories generated in IS have not yet been sufficiently recognised by HI scholars and incorporated into the HI literature. Information system, as an emerging discipline which is dynamic and interdisciplinary, is constantly undergoing rapid changes; therefore, one of the most critical issues is to study the topics and methodological trends in this field. This study aimed to thoroughly investigate the topics and methodologies used in information system throughout a twelve-year period (2007- 2018). In the present study, all the articles published in the top eight information system journals were investigated based on their topics and methodologies using a literature analysis approach, and the most common topics and methodologies in such studies were then detected. The main topics addressed in this field were electronic commerce/business, information system research, and IS usage/adoption, and the survey was the dominant research methodology in this regard. Furthermore, an increase in the use of the mathematical models indicates that more accurate quantitative research methods have made this field more mature. The research findings also show that the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, social media, bitcoin and block chain, digital transformation, sharing economy, digital platform, methodology of machine learning, data mining, and text mining are the main research topics and methods which should be further studied. Over the decades, the evolving information systems (IS) research community and its academic output has greatly expanded. This paper offers an integrated analysis of multiple dimensions of network interconnectedness of the growing IS discipline. In line with the social and intellectual dimensions of the underlying theory of science, we synthesise multiple network views on authors, institutions, journal outlets, citations, and themes into a multi-dimensional knowledge network infrastructure analysis of collaborative networks of IS researchers and their academic output. We further introduce two fragmentation types to better address the dynamics of the IS discourse discussed in previous research. Based on a corpus of all 3587 AIS basket of 8 journal articles over 20 years, we use the analytical framework to study whether the fast growth of the IS discipline resulted in a reduced coherence of the overall academic collaboration and the research themes. The analysis reveals that the sampled IS researcher community developed a large core component with influential bridging people who mitigate fragmentation and centralisation. This IS community structure constitutes a valuable asset to cope with fragmentation tendencies in the intellectual dimension (research topics) resulting from many short-term topic bursts and from centralisation of conceptual terms. Activity Theory (AT) is increasingly employed as a lens to guide data analysis in information systems (IS) studies. The theory is also applied to assess and evaluate information systems and technologies (IS/IT) in organisations. Even though its popularity continues to increase in both business and academic domains, there is no formal or assessment guide through which the theory can be applied, which makes it sometimes difficult or complicated. The challenge is significant and critical in that when applied, it influences and shapes the results of the phenomena being studied. This is a problem as results of studies cannot or should not be misconstrued or misrepresented. This study was undertaken to examine how the use of AT in IS studies can be made easy. Based on the findings, a three phase approach was developed and proposed, to guide: (i) the selection of AT in an IS/IT study; (ii) use of elements for data analysis; and (iii) how the elements can be linked with AT components in the analysis of qualitative data. The approach therefore provides a formal guide that can be followed, to ease the selection and application of AT in IS/IT studies as well as assessment of IS/IT artefacts in an organisation. Through a co-word analysis of the proceedings, this study identifies salient aspects of the evolution of published proceedings of Association for Information Systems (AIS) conferences from 2007 to 2016. We provide insights into the intellectual development and unpack specific issues within the information systems (IS) field by conducting a quantitative analysis of titles of 12,866 papers gathered from the AIS Library. The underlying assumption of this research is that the conference proceedings represent emerging and declining trends in scientific IS research. As a result, this study ascertains trends and patterns of the topics of the field. The findings present valuable insights into the state and development of the IS field, revealing rising and declining trends through several analyses.
