The Inclusive Digital Education (IDE) activity aims to thoroughly examine new priorities and demands in relation to inclusive digital education and blended learning. IDE considers international literature, along with Agency work in this field, and reflects on overlaps or gaps that need exploring. This policy brief presents some key findings from the Inclusive Digital Education report and their relevance for policy on inclusion and digital transformation to build more resilient education systems. Its key messages address four interrelated and interconnected policy areas and their roles in the digital transformation of inclusive education: Technology Learners and teachers Educational institutions Regional and national governance of the education system. Une équipe pluridisciplinaire de chercheurs a collaboré pour concevoir un modèle théorique d’aide au tutorat à distance. Cet effort, qui nécessitait en premier lieu que le collectif développe une culture scientifique partagée – envisagée dans le projet comme une condition nécessaire pour l’efficacité d’un travail collectif – est une tâche qui ne va pas de soi et qui s’avère particulièrement délicate lorsqu’elle réunit autour d’un projet commun des professionnels experts de domaines différents: dans notre cas, des domaines scientifiques variés. Pour cela, les trois dimensions (l’engagement mutuel, le répertoire partagé et l’entreprise commune) qui organisent le fonctionnement d’une communauté de pratique (Lave & Wenger, 1991) ont servi de cadre. Dans cet article, nous décrivons les façons dont ces trois dimensions ont été actualisées pour mener à bien cette entreprise collective. Sur cette base, des pistes d’aide pour la collaboration pluridisciplinaire à des fins de recherche sont évoquées. Dieses Vorhaben, welches zuallererst die Schaffung einer geteilten wissenschaftlichen Kultur erforderte – die im Projekt als notwendige Voraussetzung für die gemeinsame Arbeit erachtet wurde – ist alles andere als selbstverständlich und stellt eine besondere Herausforderung dar, zumal es Forscher aus verschiedenen Bereichen in einem gemeinsamen Projekt zusammenbringt: in unserem Fall verschiedene wissenschaftliche Bereiche. International journal for research in vocational education and training 9 (2022) 2, S. 146-166, Context: This research was conducted in the context of Finnish vocational education and training (VET) teacher training. The teacher training was work-based, meaning that each teacher trainee was already working as an unqualified VET teacher. Workplaces were comprehensively utilised as the learning environment, with teacher training support also being provided in the form of contact days, webinars, and online learning activities. Approach: We aimed to explore the main components of information and communications technology (ICT) competencies among vocational teacher trainees within work-based training and also to reveal the supportive and challenging factors related to developing ICT competencies within the training. Overall, 44 vocational teacher trainees participated in our study. The data were analysed via qualitative content analysis. Findings: Six main ICT competence components were identified during the work-based training: (1) The use and creation of digital learning materials, (2) the planning and use of digital learning environments, (3) synchronous digitally enhanced teaching, (4) general ICT competencies, (5) digital interaction, and (6) digital assessment. The development of teachers' ICT competencies was supported by their own active use of ICT and by experimenting with the ICT software and ideas presented by the teacher training staff. Challenging factors in ICT development included the continuous feeling of haste and the lack of time in the workplace, as well as the failure to recognise prior ICT competencies within the teacher training. This could limit the development of ICT competencies. Conclusions: Work-based VET teacher training has the potential to develop teacher trainees' ICT competencies because it allows immediate implementation and experimentation with regard to new ICT ideas and tools. The application of information and communication technology (ICT) is attributed a decisive role in the necessary reduction of energy and resource demand and associated environmental emissions. However, a closer look at the environmental impact of ICT reveals a contradictory picture: On the one hand, the application of ICT has the potential to reduce environmental impacts and counter climate change. On the other hand, ICT's direct energy and resource demands and their associated environmental impact are substantial. So far, it has not been possible to determine the actual environmental impact of various ICT applications. This is due to the lack of suitable approaches to include higher-order effects such as induction and rebound effects in the life cycle assessment (LCA) of ICT. This thesis aims at addressing this gap. With a focus on the application of ICT, this thesis therefore investigates how higher-order effects can be integrated into LCA of ICT. Higher-order effects of ICT are those that stem from the application of ICT, for example optimisation, induction or rebound effects. Three research questions were formulated for this purpose. The first was based on a literature review and identified the various challenges of including higher-order environmental effects of ICT into LCA. These challenges included methodological issues with regard to the definition of goal and scope in LCA of ICT, and the lack of empirical data on use-related higher-order effects. ased on these challenges, the second research question considered how higher-order effects can be properly addressed in the goal and scope definition in LCA. To this end, a conceptual framework \emph{The user perspective in LCA} was developed that firstly outlines various user-driven parameters, such as number and choice of products or intensification of use, and secondly relates these parameters to corresponding LCA modelling characteristics, such as definition of functional unit or system boundaries. Finally, the third research question focused on the operationalisation of the conceptual framework and its application in two case studies. The case of smart homes with smart heating in Germany was used to demonstrate the feasibility of the framework and to gain insights into the environmental assessment of smart home systems (SHS) when higher-order effects are also captured. The study design included the operationalisation of the user-driven parameters, the collection of primary data using an online survey, and the environmental assessment with LCA both of the average SHS in Germany (first case study), and of 375 different SHS in Germany (second case study). For one, findings show that direct environmental effects of the SHS are substantial. For example, heating optimisation in the average SHS must be at least 6\% of the annual heating energy demand over three years in order to balance out the effects of the production and operation of the SHS for the impact categories Climate Change and Primary Energy Demand. Secondly, it was found that user behaviour in the smart home varies greatly and that both the choice of device (induction effect) and the actual heating behaviour (rebound effect) have a decisive influence on the overall environmental performance of the SHS. It follows that the inclusion of user behaviour in LCA of ICT can increase the uncertainty of the results if the data on user behaviour are not appropriately validated. With regard to LCA modelling, it was found that a proper definition of the functional unit is particularly relevant for the integration of higher-order effects into the goal and scope definition. Another challenge can be the handling of multifunctionality when it comes to the inclusion of induction effects. With the development of the conceptual framework \emph{The user perspective in LCA} and its operationalisation and application to the case of smart homes, this research presented a novel approach to integrating higher-order effects into LCA of ICT. This is particularly relevant when investigating the environmental net saving potential of the application of ICT. Future research can tie in with this, for example in the investigation of higher-order ICT effects in other sectors, in the development of further interdisciplinary approaches for investigating product use behaviour, or in the development of databases with representative behavioural data for product assessment., Der Verwendung von Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologie (IKT) wird bei der notwendigen Reduktion von Energie und Ressourcen und den damit verbundenen Umweltauswirkungen eine entscheidende Rolle zugeschrieben. Ein differenzierter Blick auf die Umweltauswirkungen lässt allerdings ein widersprüchliches Bild erkennen: Einerseits kann der Einsatz von IKT in anderen Prozessen und Sektoren Umweltbelastungen reduzieren und dem Klimawandel entgegenwirken. Andererseits sind der direkte Energie- und Ressourcenbedarf der IKT und die damit verbundenen Umweltauswirkungen erheblich. Bislang war es nicht ohne weiteres möglich, die tatsächlichen Umweltauswirkungen verschiedener IKT-Anwendungen zu ermitteln, da es an geeigneten Ansätzen fehlt, um übergeordnete Effekte wie Induktions- und Reboundeffekte, die sich aus der Anwendung der IKT ergeben, in die Ökobilanz einzubeziehen. Diese Lücke schließt die vorliegende Arbeit. Mit dem Fokus auf die Anwendung von IKT wird untersucht, wie übergeordnete Umwelteffekte in die Ökobilanz von IKT integriert werden können. Als übergeordnete Effekte werden diejenigen Effekte bezeichnet, die durch die Anwendung der IKT entstehen, beispielsweise Optimierung, Induktion, oder auch Rebound. Für die Untersuchung werden drei Forschungsfragen formuliert. Die erste bezieht sich auf die aktuellen Herausforderungen bei der Einbeziehung von übergeordneten IKT-Effekten in die Ökobilanz. Auf der Grundlage einer Literaturrecherche werden verschiedene dieser Herausforderungen identifiziert, beispielsweise methodische Herausforderungen in Bezug auf die Definition von Ziel und Untersuchungsumfang in der Ökobilanz von IKT oder der Mangel an empirischen Daten zu nutzungsbezogenen Effekten. Auf der Grundlage dieser identifizierten Herausforderungen fokussiert die zweite Forschungsfrage darauf, wie die übergeordneten Effekte bei der Definition von Ziel und Untersuchungsrahmen in der Ökobilanz entsprechend berücksichtigt werden können. Dafür wird das Framework \emph{Die Nutzerperspektive in der Ökobilanz} entwickelt. Darin sind verschiedene nutzergesteuerte Parameter wie Anzahl der Produkte oder die Nutzungsintensität aufgeführt und den entsprechenden Eigenschaften in der Ökobilanz, wie der Definition der funktionalen Einheit und der Systemgrenzen zugeordnet. Die dritte Forschungsfrage konzentriert sich auf die Operationalisierung des Frameworks und dessen Anwendung in zwei Fallstudien. Als Anwendungsfall wird das Smart Home mit smarter Heizungssteuerung in Deutschland verwendet. Ziel ist es, die Machbarkeit des Frameworks zu demonstrieren und Einblicke in die Umweltbewertung von Smart Homes zu gewinnen, wenn auch übergeordnete Effekte erfasst werden. Das Studiendesign umfasst die Operationalisierung der nutzergesteuerten Parameter, die Erhebung von Primärdaten mittels einer Online-Befragung und die Umweltbewertung des durchschnittlichen Smart Homes (Fallstudie 1), sowie von 375 verschiedenen Smart Homes in Deutschland (Fallstudie 2). Die Ergebnisse verdeutlichen zum einen die erheblichen direkten Umweltauswirkungen von Smart Homes. Um die Auswirkungen aus der Produktion und dem Betrieb des Smart Homes in den Wirkungskategorien Treibhauspotential und Primärenergieverbrauch auszugleichen, muss beispielsweise durchschnittlich mindestens 6\% des jährlichen Heizenergiebedarfs über drei Jahre durch Optimierung des Heizenergieverbrauchs eingespart werden. Zum anderen wurde festgestellt, dass das Nutzungsverhalten im Smart Home sehr unterschiedlich ist und sowohl die Wahl der Geräte (Induktionseffekt) als auch das tatsächliche Heizverhalten (Rebound-Effekt) einen entscheidenden Einfluss auf die Gesamtumweltbewertung des Smart Homes ausüben. Daraus folgt, dass die Einbeziehung des Nutzerverhaltens in die Ökobilanz von IKT die Unsicherheit der Resultate erhöhen kann, wenn diese nutzerspezifischen Daten nicht angemessen validiert werden. Für die Modellierung von übergeordneten Effekten in der Ökobilanz zeigen die Ergebnisse, dass eine korrekte Definition der funktionalen Einheit besonders wichtig ist. Eine Herausforderung kann der Umgang mit Multifunktionalität sein, wenn es um die Einbeziehung von Induktionseffekten geht. Mit der Entwicklung des Frameworks \emph{Die Nutzerperspektive in der Ökobilanz} und dessen Operationalisierung und Anwendung am Beispiel von Smart Homes präsentiert diese Forschung somit einen neuartigen Ansatz zur Integration von übergeordneten Effekten in die Ökobilanz von IKT. Dies ist insbesondere bei der Untersuchung des Umwelteinsparpotenzials von IKT-Anwendung von Bedeutung. The metaphor of digitalisation in education emerged during a period when phenomena such as budget cuts and privatisation, layoffs and outsourcing of labour marked the ethos of the twenty-first century. During this time, digitalisation was constructed as an ultimate purpose and an all-encompassing matter in education. As a result, these narratives add new configurations to the metaphor of digitalisation on an ongoing basis. Such configurations attribute a mythical fullness to the concept, in the sense that digitalisation goes beyond the limits of a property that needs be developed so that society can successfully deal with contemporary challenges and advancements. In this way, digitalisation emerges as a new hegemony in education, with narratives that are more and less directly referential. Less direct references add the element of allusion to the metaphor of digitalisation, in the sense that references can be more implicit/covert or even concealed/hidden. Moreover, as they combine with abstract terms and concepts, they make the boundaries of the technological and educational domains blurry and render education discourse vague. In order to examine the narratives of digitalisation and how they influence education discourse, this study aims to discuss and analyse relevant policy documents in relation to research and studies on the integration of digital technologies in classroom settings and the hybrid (or blended) learning environments that open up. For this purpose, the study uses thematic analysis and discourse analysis in order to trace allusions and references and discuss how emergent meanings relate to current and future needs in education generated by digitalisation itself. © 2019, University of Ljubljana. Chatbots are a promising technology with the potential to enhance workplaces and everyday life. In terms of scalability and accessibility, they also offer unique possibilities as communication and information tools for digital learning. In this paper, we present a systematic literature review investigating the areas of education where chatbots have already been applied, explore the pedagogical roles of chatbots, the use of chatbots for mentoring purposes, and their potential to personalize education. We conducted a preliminary analysis of 2,678 publications to perform this literature review, which allowed us to identify 74 relevant publications for chatbots’ application in education. Through this, we address five research questions that, together, allow us to explore the current state-of-the-art of this educational technology. We conclude our systematic review by pointing to three main research challenges: 1) Aligning chatbot evaluations with implementation objectives, 2) Exploring the potential of chatbots for mentoring students, and 3) Exploring and leveraging adaptation capabilities of chatbots. In Bezug auf die Skalierbarkeit und Zugänglichkeit bieten sie auch einzigartige Möglichkeiten als Kommunikations- und Informationswerkzeuge für das digitale Lernen. In diesem Beitrag stellen wir eine systematische Literaturanalyse vor, in der wir die Bildungsbereiche untersuchen, in denen Chatbots bereits eingesetzt werden, sowie die pädagogische Rolle von Chatbots, den Einsatz von Chatbots für Mentoring-Zwecke und ihr Potenzial zur Personalisierung der Bildung. Dazu haben wir 2.678 Publikationen untersucht und schließlich 74 relevante Publikationen für die Anwendung von Chatbots im Bildungsbereich identifiziert. Wir gehen fünf Forschungsfragen nach, die es uns ermöglichen, den aktuellen Stand dieser Bildungstechnologie zu erkunden. Durch digitale Lehr- und Lernmethoden können präsenzgebundene Studienformen durch Elemente eines Fernstudiums ergänzt bzw. ersetzt werden. Dazu zählt auch die Konzeption und Durchführung von Fernprüfungen an Hochschulen. Dieser Beitrag diskutiert zunächst kurz Einsatzmöglichkeiten unterschiedlicher Prüfungsformate unter Gesichtspunkten des Constructive Alignments und der Kompetenzorientierung. Anschließend werden ausgehend von der fehlenden räumlichen Nähe bei Fernprüfungen didaktische Besonderheiten bei der Gestaltung von Fernprüfungen sowie technische und organisatorische Rahmenbedingungen bei deren Durchführung analysiert sowie konkrete, praxisorientierte Empfehlungen vorgestellt. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt dabei neben der Kompetenzorientierung auf der Verhinderung von Betrugsversuchen. Während sich für einige Prüfungsformate, wie z. B. mündliche Prüfungen, vorwiegend geringfügige, technische Unterschiede zu klassischen Präsenzprüfungen ergeben, stellt eine Fernprüfung für andere Prüfungsformen, wie Klausuren, eine Herausforderung hinsichtlich der technischen, organisatorischen und didaktischen Gestaltung dar, welche eine geeignete Anpassung der für Präsenzprüfungen erprobten Formate erfordern., Digital methods for teaching and learning are widely used in distance learning and teaching settings and can be used to supplement or replace traditional face-to-face settings. This particularly includes the design and administration of remote assessments at universities. In this article the authors will start by briefly discussing how different examination formats ad-here to the constructive alignment principle of competence-oriented teaching. Subsequently, they will analyze how remote assessment settings influence the design of distance learning exams and discuss technical and organizational frameworks needed for their implementation. They focus on hands-on recommendations including design choices and technical tools to prevent examination fraud. While some examination formats such as oral examinations are only slightly affected by remote assessments settings, for other examination formats such as written examinations remoteness poses a challenge with regard to the technical, organizational and didactic design and a suitable adaptation of these examination formats is needed. more...

Das Bundesministerium für Bildung, Wissenschaft und Forschung (BMBWF) hat im Rahmen des Masterplans für Digitalisierung in der Bildung das Handlungsfeld „Lehrende – Aus-, Fort- und Weiterbildung“ neben „Software – Pädagogik, Lehr- und Lerninhalte“ sowie „Hardware – Infrastruktur, modernes IT-Management, moderne Schulverwaltung“ als zentrales Aktionsfeld verankert. Die darin enthaltene Maßnahme bzw. das Instrument digi.folio bietet allen Lehrpersonen – angehenden sowie im Dienst stehenden – die Möglichkeit für ihren Lehrberuf nötige digitale Kompetenzen maßgeschneidert auf- und auszubauen. digi.folio wurde unter Einbindung aller 14 Pädagogischen Hochschulen Österreichs, insbesondere der Mitglieder der PHELS-Gruppe (E-Learning Strategiegruppe der Pädagogischen Hochschulen Österreichs) federführend vom National Center of Competence (NCoC) Virtuelle PH konzipiert und entwickelt. As a relevant cognitive-motivational aspect of ICT literacy, a new construct ICT Engagement is theoretically based on self-determination theory and involves the factors ICT interest, Perceived ICT competence, Perceived autonomy related to ICT use, and ICT as a topic in social interaction. In this manuscript, we present different sources of validity supporting the construct interpretation of test scores in the ICT Engagement scale, which was used in PISA 2015. Specifically, we investigated the internal structure by dimensional analyses and investigated the relation of ICT Engagement aspects to other variables. The analyses are based on public data from PISA 2015 main study from Switzerland (n = 5860) and Germany (n = 6504). First, we could confirm the four-dimensional structure of ICT Engagement for the Swiss sample using a structural equation modelling approach. Second, ICT Engagement scales explained the highest amount of variance in ICT Use for Entertainment, followed by Practical use. Third, we found significantly lower values for girls in all ICT Engagement scales except ICT Interest. Fourth, we found a small negative correlation between the scores in the subscale “ICT as a topic in social interaction” and reading performance in PISA 2015. We could replicate most results for the German sample. Overall, the obtained results support the construct interpretation of the four ICT Engagement subscales. more...

European journal of psychological assessment 36 (2020) 2, S. 269-279, The goal of this study was to investigate sources of evidence of convergent validity supporting the construct interpretation of scores on a simulation-based ICT skills test. The construct definition understands ICT skills as reliant on ICT-specific knowledge as well as comprehension and problem-solving skills. On the basis of this, a validity argument comprising three claims was formulated and tested. (1) In line with the classical nomothetic span approach, all three predictor variables explained task success positively across all ICT skills items. As ICT tasks can vary in the extent to which they require construct-related knowledge and skills and in the way related items are designed and implemented, the effects of construct-related predictor variables were expected to vary across items. (2) A task-based analysis approach revealed that the item-level effects of the three predictor variables were in line with the targeted construct interpretation for most items. (3) Finally, item characteristics could significantly explain the random effect of problem-solving skills, but not comprehension skills. Taken together, the obtained results generally support the validity of the construct interpretation. more...

The aim of this study is to record the perceptions of school principals, who are the main customers of Educational Directorates in order to improve the quality of the provided services. The theoretical framework attempts to describe the prevalent view that the provision of qualitative and effective administrative support to schools can contribute to school smooth operation and school staff satisfaction in order to focus on educational services, rather than on administrative problems and restrictions. The administrative factors under investigation are the mode of administration, the efficiency of procedures, ICT skill enhancement and employees' performance, technological modernization efforts, and customer participation in decision-making. The study examines how these variables, affect the level of satisfaction of school principals. The regression analysis and the maximum frequency of answers within the rating range of the six-level Likert scale are used. The primary data was obtained by using an electronic questionnaire (through google forms) which allows for the use of econometric techniques. The school principals of the Primary and Secondary Directorates of Education in Eastern Thessaloniki comprise the research field. The results of the analysis show that Administrative factors have a major impact and summatively affect customer satisfaction. Current demands render the function of education more complex since it is asked to move beyond the simple experiential approach of administrative action that was based on the experience of older members of staff and to combine it with knowledge and skills on developments of New Public Management. Ziel: Diese Forschungsarbeit untersuchte die E-Health Readiness der Diätolog*innen in Österreich und den Einsatz von E-Health in der diätologischen Praxis und liefert damit zu diesem Thema die ersten Daten für die österreichische Berufsgruppe der Diätolog*innen. Die E-Health Readiness beschreibt inwieweit die Berufsgruppe der Diätolog*innen in Österreich auf die Einführung von Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien (IKT) vorbereitet ist und somit auch die Vorteile der Nutzung von IKT realisieren können. Methode: Um die Forschungsfrage zu beantworten wurde eine Online-Befragung bei Diätolog*innen in Österreich durchgeführt. Der Fragebogen enthielt 25 Fragen. Die Daten wurden mittels deskriptiver und induktiver Statistik ausgewertet und beschrieben. Ergebnisse: Die Ergebnisse der Online-Befragung betreffend der E-Health Readiness der Diätolog*innen zeigen, dass 100% der Diätolog*innen an ihrem Arbeitsplatz Zugang zu einem Computer haben, um elektronische Daten abzurufen oder einzugeben. Diätolog*innen nutzen IKT vor allem aufgrund von mangelndem Wissen und Erfahrung sowie aufgrund dem/der Arbeitgeber*in nicht. Die Auswertung der Ergebnisse bezüglich dem Einsatz von E-Health in der diätologischen Praxis haben gezeigt, dass fast die Hälfte der Diätolog*innen Telefon oder Audiokonferenzen als Methode der Patient*innenbetreuung anbieten und circa ein Viertel Videokonferenzen durchführen. 25% der Diätolog*innen verwen-den Ernährungs-Apps, dabei wird die App Yazio am häufigsten eingesetzt. Diskussion: Die Auswertung der Daten aus der Umfrage haben gezeigt, dass noch einige Barrieren/Gründe bestehen, die dazu führen, dass die Berufsgruppe für den Einsatz von E-Health nicht bereit ist. Diese Barrieren gilt es unter anderem durch gezielte Fort- und Wei-terbildungen zu überwinden, damit die Vorteile von IKT zur Gänze realisiert werden können. Darüber hinaus wird es in der Zukunft wichtig sein, dass Diätolog*innen und der Berufsverband, mit Unternehmen die E-Health Anwendungen entwickeln, zusammenarbeiten um zu gewährleistet, dass die E-Heath Lösungen den Bedürfnissen und Anforderungen der Berufsgruppe der Diätolog*innen entsprechen und auch eingesetzt werden. Aim: This Bachelor thesis examined the e-health readiness of dietitians in Austria and the use of e-health in dietetic practice. eHealth readiness means the preparedness of healthcare organisations, societies or, in this case, the dietetic profession, for the expected changes caused by plans associated with a information and communications technology (ICT) solution. Methods: In order to answer the research question, an online survey was conducted among the professional group of dietitians in Austria. The questionnaire contained 25 questions. The data were evaluated and described by using descriptive and inductive statistics. Results: The results of the online survey on the e-health readiness of dietitians show that 100% of dietitians have access to a computer at their workplace to retrieve or enter electronic data. Dietitians do not use ICT, mainly due to a lack of knowledge and experience and because of the employer. The evaluation of the results concerning the use of e-health in dietetic practice showed that almost half of the dietitians offer telephone or audio conferences as a method of patient care and about a quarter use video conferences. 25% of dieticians use a nutrition app, with the Yazio app being used most frequently. Discussion: The analysis of the data from the survey has shown that there are still some barriers/reasons why the professional group is not ready for the use of e-health. These barriers must be overcome, through targeted training and further education, so that the advantages of ICT can be fully realized. Digital Making as an Educational Project is an innovative educational experience that has been carried out with students of the Primary Education and Social Education degrees for three consecutive years. The experience introduces digital making as an activity in which students create an object using digital technology. In the process, they not only gain an insight into how the technology works, but also learn the content and competences of the curriculum. This innovative teaching practice was carried out as action research in order to improve traditional higher education practices. In this sense, the proposal puts the student at the centre of the process as the author and protagonist of their own learning process. The experience is based on their own interests: they decide what to make based on a given context. The students work in groups and look for what they need to learn to overcome a particular challenge, while the teacher supports the process as a facilitator, offering guidance and resources when necessary. The evaluation of the whole process is regulated via a group diary (a shared online document) and an individual diary (a blog) that the students produce. The final evaluation is not only of the printed product; the students also produce a video in the form of storytelling, in which they explain how the process evolved from the initial idea to the final impression of the object. They also reflect on what they have learned, how teamwork has worked and what possibilities they believe digital making offers in the primary and non-formal educational contexts in which they will work. All of the processes are compiled in the students’ blogs, as well as in the teachers’ field notebooks. The experience was executed in collaboration with the Digital Fabrication Centres of Barcelona. The results were organised to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of using technologies to improve higher education offering an approach in which students are at the centre of the whole process. Strengths: strong student motivation, promotion of self-directed and collaborative learning and learning by doing, and familiarisation with a transforming integration of technology as protagonists. Weaknesses: hesitance and resistance to facing the challenge, management of scarce time, large time investment by the teachers, and the difficulty of achieving in-depth reflection on how digital fabrication could be introduced in educational contexts such as primary school and non-formal contexts. more...

This qualitative study was carried out in five different elementary schools in the Czech Republic. It aimed to investigate how English as Foreign Language teachers developed teaching competence and practised information communication technology integration in classroom teaching. To this end, this study employed the idea of a Technology Pedagogy and Content Knowledge –TPACK -in-Action Model. It advocates a ‘learning by doing’ approach on (social) construction to better understand how teachers develop technological and/or computer-assisted language learning competency for teaching and practice in an English as a Foreign Language environment. Under this model, this study conducted qualitative analysis and found two different approaches in practice, which were categorised as Formal Practice and Functional Practice. The former involved a conservative mechanical practice of technology use in language teaching whereas the latter involved it in terms of (social) construction. According to analyses based on conservative practices, teachers expressed that mechanical TPACK in association with technology in classes limited the transmission of mechanical knowledge from English texts. In Functional Practice, however, teachers drawing upon alternative learning interactions expressed positive transformation results from TPACK, associated with the use of technologies integrated into class instructions as a collaborative tool for learning models. In these latter integrated practices, teachers’ perceptions, practices, and reflections in combining technologies in an English as a Foreign Language environment, as new literacy skills, identified an increase in the learner’s creative potential. International journal for research in vocational education and training 1 (2014) 2, S. 125-142, This paper depicts a study carried out in Rwanda concerning university students who participated in a contest to produce short documentary films. The purpose of this research is to conceptualize these kinds of technology-based learning projects (TBLPs) through a sociocultural perspective. The methodology included focus-group discussions and field notes to collect empirical data. The findings reveal that the more educational technologies capture objects of learning positioned in the students’ sociocultural proximity, the more focused the learners’ attention is on these objects. The study shows also that a change in learning projects may depend to a large extent on whether the technology relates to the students’ sociocultural proximity, that is, taking into consideration students’ physical, cultural, and contextual real world. The study recommends a community of learning/inquiry embedded in a collaborative, problem-solving dynamic involving cognitive support from peers, teachers, external specialists, and the wider community. European journal for Research on the Education and Learning of Adults 8 (2017) 1, S. 37-53, Over the years, the European Union has strengthened measures that address the need to find answers to the challenges posed by the information society, which in turn underscores the importance of a focus on innovation of adult education, especially for those in conditions of social exclusion. The aim of this paper is to analyse the reality of Higher Education in Distance Learning and e-Learning in a prison context. The results from interviews, interpreted in a context of a non-positivist paradigm, show that students are rather motivated because they foresee a more attractive future if they have an academic diploma. Despite this, however, their expectations are not very high, because they acknowledge that their rehabilitation will be difficult due to the stigma of being an ex-prisoner. The results show, also, that the education process has many weaknesses and limitations mostly due to the lack of facilities, educational and technological resources, and support from teachers. Der Beitrag behandelt das internationale Zusatzmodul Computational Thinking zum zweiten Zyklus von ICILS im Jahr 2018 und fokussiert dabei auf die Konzeptionierung dieser pogrammiersprachenunabhängigen computerbezogenen Problemlösekompetenzen sowie die damit verbundenen Perspektiven für die empirische Bildungsforschung. (DIPF/Orig.), In the context of the second cycle of the ICILS (International Computer and Information Literacy Study), the IEA (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement) for the first time implements a so-called international option for educational systems participating in ICILS 2018 in the form of an optional test module on competences related to 'Computational Thinking'. In doing so, the international student tests conceptualized for grade 8 students in ICILS 2018 will be supplemented by two test modules. Likewise, the background questionnaires for teachers, students, principals and ICT coordinators will be complemented by relevant questions relating to the above-mentioned competencies. Germany, alongside the USA, France, Finland, and other countries, will be participating in these optional modules or have confirmed their interest. It will thereby attain governance knowledge of educational system development, relying on a substantial database of computer-based student tests that will complement the knowledge gain from other large-scale assessment studies. This new knowledge is gained in a domain that subsequently will bring further changes for the private and professional life and that includes competencies which will - with increasing relevance - be considered as key competencies. In a first step, the present article will highlight existing approaches to the described relevance of 'Computational Thinking' on the basis of national and international research literature. In a second step, the conceptualization of 'Computational Thinking' as a test construct in the context of ICILS 2018 will be presented. Thereby, particular emphasis will be placed on the implementation of the optional module in Germany as well as on situating 'Computational Thinking' against the background of recent developments in the German educational system. We assume that social media use contributes to employability and sociality and media literacy complements a basic set of skills. Especially the low skilled and low educated lack media literacy, which contributes to their precarious situation and increases a participation gap. A database search for peer reviewed articles covering effective elements of media literacy did not return any useful results. The retrieved literature was scarce and media literacy concepts were inconclusive, conflated or ambivalent. We then broadened our scope, using a snow ball technique and Harzing’s Publish and Perish for control purposes. This approach lead to literature indicating that self-presentation and self-profiling are important literacy practices, involving knowledge and skills related to participation in social and economic contexts and understanding of the relations between sociality, employability and networks. Media literacy is best approached as hands-on, situated and experiential, taught in a democratic and critical fashion and related to the attitudes and perspective of the low educated and the low skilled. There is however no clear answer what the complementary role of informal learning is and how literacy related skills and knowledge demanded for lifelong learning may change during the life course. It is also important that policies focussing on inclusion and participation broaden their perspective beyond individualistic notions and , consider the influence of structuralizing mechanisms that create inequality and extend their explanations beyond those framed by economic theories, models and categories. more...

Die Autoren unternehmen zunächst ein allgemeines Resümee der Beiträge beider "hochschule"-Themenhefte und kommen zu zwei zentralen Eindrücken: Zum einen wird Digitalisierung als medienrevolutionäre gesellschaftliche Transformation markiert, welche zugleich eine genuine Entwicklungschance der Hochschulen darstelle, die weit über die Adaption an gesellschaftliche Bedingungen hinausgehe (1.1.). Zum anderen könne sich Digitalisierung an den Hochschulen nicht lediglich punktuell vollziehen, sondern müsse als Querschnittsthema be- und verarbeitet werden (1.2.). Angesichts der Komplexität der Hochschuldigitalisierung lohnt es, sich grundlegende Bearbeitungsmuster in Erinnerung zu rufen und diese auf die Herausforderungen der Digitalisierung hin zu reflektieren. Dazu lässt sich die Unterscheidung von Strategien (2.) und Policies (3.) nutzen, indem Digitalisierungsstrategien und Digitalisierungspolicies unterschieden werden. Digitalisierungsstrategien sind noch keine Digitalisierung, aber sie können Handlungsprogramme dafür sein. Damit sie auch wirksame Handlungsprogramme werden, lassen sie sich in Digitalisierungspolicies einbauen, deren Programmierung sie dann bilden. Digitalisierungspolicies vermögen, anders als Strategien allein, eine hohe Responsibilität zu sichern, mit denen sich die Veränderungsgeschwindigkeiten im Digitalisierungsgeschehen einfangen lassen. Wird die an Digitalisierungsprozesse geknüpfte Erwartung einer Entlastung der wissenschaftlichen Leistungsebene von organisatorischen - allgemeinhin als Bürokratie wahrgenommenen - Aufgaben erfüllt? Diese Frage kann nicht bejaht werden. Damit ist das Digitalisierungs-Versprechen, Verwaltungs- und Organisationsaufgaben würden für Wissenschaftler.innen einfacher handhabbar, bislang nicht eingelöst worden. Tatsächlich kommt es zu einer Zunahme organisatorischer Kontextaufgaben, die allgemeinhin als Bürokratisierung wahrgenommen und kommuniziert werden. An diesen Befund anschließend, ist auch die Frage Kann die - häufig im Zusammenhang mit den NPM- und Bolognareformen beklagte - Mehrbelastung der Wissenschaftler.innen durch digitale Assistenz neutralisiert werden? bislang nicht zu bejahen. Das Governancereform-Versprechen, Entstaatlichung gehe mit Entbürokratisierung einher, wird dadurch enttäuscht, dass sich für die Lehrenden neue Belastungen ergeben. Gleiches gilt für das Studienstrukturreform-Versprechen, die Strukturierung der Studiengänge könne Entlastung von den zuvor nötigen Improvisationsanstrengungen erbringen. Tatsächlich entstanden neue Belastungen bei der Verwaltung des Strukturierten. Fazit: Den Hochschulen werden neue Prozesse entweder (reformbedingt) aufgenötigt oder sie halten solche neuen Prozesse für erforderlich, um Erwartungen zu begegnen, die so vorher nicht bestanden hatten. Eine Strategie, um dem zu begegnen, stellt das Organisieren von Prozessassistenz durch Digitalisierung dar. Als kritisch ist zu bewerten, dass sich durch den Akzeptanzmangel ein Kreislauf stabilisieren kann, der die weitgehende Integration bzw. integrierte Nutzung digitaler Assistenzen in Forschung, Lehre und Verwaltung an Hochschulen hemmt: Wird eine Mehrbelastung wahrgenommen und diese mit elektronischen Systemen im allgemeinen bzw. Campus-Management-Systemen (CaMS) im speziellen assoziiert, kann dies die Nutzungsbereitschaft mindern oder zu Vermeidungsstrategien führen.
