340 p., This PhD thesis aims to investigate aspects related to the process-microstructure-property trinomial in multi-material Additive Manufacturing (AM) when applied to the production of high-wear-resistant coatings. In the course of this research work, several topics have been covered in order to approach the Laser-Directed Energy Deposition (L-DED) of metal-ceramic multi-material structures from a holistic perspective. Therefore, from aspects related to the process set-up and the behaviour of multi-material powder mixtures in L-DED nozzles to the influence of the processing conditions on the microstructure and subsequent material properties have been investigated. In addition, the performance of these coatings has been evaluated from a mechanical and tribological perspective, to demonstrate the capabilities and potential benefits of metal-ceramic coatings for wear-resistant applications.Based on the current state-of-the-art and motivated by industrial and societal requirements, WC-Co Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) coatings are established as a suitable solution for the coating of components subject to high frictional loads and operating at high temperatures. In addition, L DED is proposed as the most suitable process for depositing such coatings. On this basis, the most relevant research questions are identified, namely, the challenges associated with multi-material L-DED from a system design perspective and the need for a methodology to set-up the L-DED process and target specificmicrostructures and properties, when multi-material powder feedstocks are involved.The first part of this PhD thesis focuses on investigating the fluid-dynamic behaviour of metal-ceramic multi-material powder mixtures in continuous coaxial L-DED nozzles. Indeed, due to the different inertial properties of WC and Co-alloys, powder segregation is likely to occur, which will subsequently affect the composition of the deposited coatings. Los capítulos 5,7, 9, 10 y 11 están sujetos a confidencialidad por el autor. 283 p., El objetivo de este trabajo de investigación es proponer nuevas técnicas para reducir los problemas limitantes de las operaciones de mandrinado: la evacuación de viruta y las vibraciones autoexcitadas.Como herramienta para el desarrollo de soluciones, se ha llevado a cabo un modelado dinámico del proceso de mandrinado, compuesto por un modelo dinámico de barras y un modelo mecatrónico. Por una parte, el modelo de barras tiene en cuenta la rigidez y el amortiguamiento del amarre, lo que permite una estimación precisa de su comportamiento dinámico. Por otro lado, se ha desarrollado un modelo mecatrónico que permite simular la estabilidad del proceso en el dominio temporal, incluyendo las técnicas de rotura de viruta y los actuadores inerciales. El problema de la rotura de viruta se ha abordado mediante la técnica del mecanizado asistido por modulación (MAM), desarrollando un algoritmo automático que selecciona los parámetros óptimos para su aplicación en operaciones de mandrinado pesado. Además de ello, se han estudiado varias técnicas para suprimir las vibraciones autoexcitadas en operaciones de mandrinado. Por un lado, se propone el acoplamiento modal entre los modos de la barra de mandrinar y de la máquina para los casos de esbeltez intermedia. Por otro lado, las soluciones activas permiten cubrir un mayor rango de esbeltez, por lo que se ha diseñado un nuevo actuador basado en fuerzas de reluctancia. Finalmente, se ha realizado una comparación estricta entre el amortiguamiento proporcionado por medio del dispositivos activos y el que proviene de los sistemas de guiado.

Los capítulos 4 y 5 están sujetos a confidencialidad por el autor. 186 p., El trabajo presentado se centra en la definición de un método para establecer condiciones óptimas del mecanizado de aleaciones de baja maquinabilidad atendiendo a consideraciones de integridad y productividad.Se podría pensar que en 2022 queda poco por inventar o avanzar en el campo del mecanizado, pero en realidad sigue siendo una tecnología que permite obtener buen acabado, precisión e integridad superficial en los componentes fabricados a un coste asumible por el mercado. El desarrollo de nuevos materiales, recubrimientos y geometrías de corte es continua y como consecuencia de ello los fabricantes de herramientas lanzan al mercado nuevas herramientas periódicamente. Evaluar de manera sistemática a vida todas las herramientas es inabordable, por lo que disponer de un método que permita identificar la herramienta y las condiciones óptimas de aplicación resulta de gran interés desde el punto de vista productivo. Este trabajo se estable un método inductivo de filtrado en cascada para la optimización de procesos de mecanizado que ha sido aplicado a dos materiales de baja maquinabilidad como son el Inconel 718 y la fundición ADI 1000. En ambos materiales se optimizan procesos de torneado y fresado de aplicación industrial. Otros de los objetivos del método es la generación de conocimiento a partir de los resultados experimentales, para ello es clave un adecuado diseño de experimentos. El conocimiento generado redunda en la identificación de los factores que aumentan el rendimiento de la herramienta y en la aplicación de nuevos métodos de evaluación de los resultados experimentales. En resumen: el mecanizado es un gran mercado, una tecnología clásica pero a su vez en evolución, el noble arte de trabajar metales sigue siendo en 2022 una mezcla de ciencia aplicada, buen saber hacer y experiencia. (cast.), La fabricación aditiva es un concepto de producción que ha generado creciente interés en los últimos años. En este tipo de tecnología se parte de un diseño en tres dimensiones y se acaba materializando en un objeto físico mediante la adición de material capa a capa, en vez de sustraerlo de un bloque macizo. Dentro de la fabricación aditiva metálica, dependiendo de la naturaleza del material utilizado y del tipo de fuente de energía, hay diferentes clases de tecnologías, cada una con sus restricciones en cuanto a materiales, calidad, productividad y eficiencia.Entre las tecnologías de fabricación aditiva metálica, esta tesis se centra en la tecnología conocida como WAAM (Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing), que se clasifica dentro de la categoría de deposición de energía dirigida (DED, Directed Energy Deposition). La tecnología WAAM utiliza un arco eléctrico para fundir el material introducido en el proceso en forma de hilo metálico y lo aporta con la geometría deseada. En concreto, de las diferentes tecnologías WAAM que se pueden encontrar en el mercado, en esta tesis se estudia, en profundidad, el proceso WAAM basado en GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding).Este último proceso genera especial interés gracias a que permite la fabricación de piezas grandes con cierta complejidad geométrica con un coste reducido en diversos materiales con altas tasas de aporte. Además, también puede reparar piezas desgastadas o añadir detalles a estructuras básicas, mejorando aún más sus capacidades. In manufacturing sector, looking for a balance between environmental and technical efficiency taking into account productivity is mandatory. Some sectors, such as the biomedical manufacturing sector, also needs to consider the cleanness inherent to prosthesis manufacturing processes for avoiding pathogens transfer to the human body, that is, neither chemicals, bacteria, nor uncontrolled metals can be introduced during the surgical intervention. This work here presented stems from the idea of analyzing the cleanness of cryogenic cooling to be applied to medical pieces. For this, several samples were machined using CO2 cryogenic technology and oil emulsions, respectively. In particular, a modified milling tool was used to apply not only efficiently as cutting fluid but also as cleaner fluid. Afterwards, they were analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) with the aim of looking for biological remains. Finally, with the aim of validating the modified tool in which CO2 is introduced axially as internal coolant, its tool life was tested in comparison with a conventional one. The results shown that the use of CO2 as internal coolant significantly improves the cleanness of current machining processes in comparison with the use of oil emulsions and the way in which is injected does not affect to machining performance.

231 p., En este trabajo se realiza una investigación experimental acerca de procesos de torneado de alto avance en superaleaciones termorresistentes. Primeramente, se realizaron pruebas de torneado con una herramienta de alto avance para aleaciones termorresistentes y se estudió también el efecto del uso de refrigerante convencional y criogénico. Se crearon modelos mecanísticos para la obtención de coeficientes de corte en Inconel® 718, Nimonic® C-263 y AISI 1055. Los coeficientes de corte se obtuvieron en condiciones de herramienta no desgastada y son útiles para condiciones de corte iniciales, sin embargo, no aportan información sobre el comportamiento del inserto en condiciones de desgaste. A continuación, se evaluó la respuesta al desgaste de los insertos de alto avance al mecanizar Nimonic® C-263 bajo diferentes condiciones. Asimismo, se ha comparado el desempeño de los insertos al mecanizar con taladrina y con CO2. Además, se ha comprobado la efectividad de la disminución del ángulo de posición en la durabilidad del inserto y se ha desarrollado un modelo para la predicción del desgaste. Este modelo considera el deterioro geométrico gradual de la herramienta que se ha demostrado como un mecanismo importante, ya que controla la evolución de las fuerzas de corte en esta superaleación.

Los capítulos 3, 4 y 5 están sujetos a confidencialidad por el autor. 136 p., El objetivo de este trabajo es desarrollar un dispositivo para entrenar el equilibrio y movimiento del tronco durante la etapa temprana de rehabilitación en pacientes que han sufrido un ictus. Este dispositivo se encuentra acoplado a un bipedestador y se basa en un manipulador continuo paralelo donde una mochila es desplazada por cuatro brazos flexibles accionados por motores rotativos, logrando la traslación y rotación requerida en el tronco para realizar un ejercicio determinado. Después de medir los requisitos cinemáticos, se ha desarrollado un modelo del mecanismo para diseñar el sistema. Se ha construido el prototipo y se ha realizado una validación experimental preliminar donde la mochila realiza una rotación alrededor del eje anteroposterior, medio lateral y longitudinal.

231 p., Climate change impacts such as extreme events and progressive global warming are threatening the conservation and liveability of urban cultural heritage. Understanding climate risks on heritage should be part of policy and planning decision-making processes to increase resilience and sustainability of both social and built environmental systems. However, despite a large body of literature focusing on climate-related hazards, there is a noticeable knowledge gap regarding a holistic conceptualization of the risks in historic urban areas, which is particularly noticeable in the case of the impacts of heat waves and heat urban island phenomena on urban heritage.The scope of this thesis is to assess the impact and intrinsic characteristics of the area to determine risk, which serves as the basis for future prioritization of climate change adaptation interventions. The thesis develops a methodological approach for vulnerability and risk assessment supported by a multi-scale urban model that represents the interaction between urban spaces and heat waves via Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data. The methodology delivers a robust and replicable tool by using a categorization method for urban modelling that considers the vulnerability of historic areas both as urbansystems and as heritage areas.The MIVES (Integrated Value Model for Sustainability Assessment) methodology was applied, in order to provide decision-making with objective and justified prioritization. To frame a holistic approach, socio-economic, cultural, governance (services and resources) and physical (gathering tangible characteristics of all infrastructures, elements and buildings) aspects of the system are taken into account. The methodology is tested for its replicability in two case studies, the historic area of Bilbao, Basque Country, and the old quarters of Naples, Italy.

One of the prevailing challenges in multi-material laser Directed Energy Deposition is the segregation of the constituents during the delivery of the feedstock into the melt pool. This phenomenon is of particular concern when metal-ceramic mixtures are involved, as the differences in the inertial properties of the powders are higher and segregation is aggravated. This issue affects the reliability of the process; indeed, powder segregation can influence the composition of the melt pool and, thus, that of the final part or coating. In this work, Computational Fluid Dynamics modelling is adopted to study this phenomenon and to explore strategies to overcome it. Firstly, a base multi-material CFD model is built. Secondly, a simplified algorithm is proposed to reduce the computational cost of simulating multiple scenarios. This model is first validated numerically against the base model. Then the simplified multi-material CFD model is experimentally validated. Thirdly, the developed tool is implemented to elaborate two strategies to minimise powder segregation in a Co-WC powder mixture. The first one is quite straightforward and little development is necessary to incorporate it to the industry. Conversely, the second one, though promising, needs further development and its practicality needs to be evaluated before being ready for industrial implementation.

Fatigue crack growth tests are conducted to assess the efficacy of the stop-hole crack repair method. This straightforward and widely adopted technique involves drilling a hole at the crack tip and subsequently enlarging it using a pin inserted into the hole. A fracture mechanics-based model is proposed to estimate the extension of fatigue life achieved through the implementation of the stop-hole technique. The model’s predictions are validated using data obtained from fatigue crack growth tests conducted on both unrepaired and repaired M(T) specimens, following the guidelines outlined in the ASTM E647 standard. The error of the fracture mechanics-based model was 1.4% in comparison with the fatigue tests.

The present work investigates the performance of TiAlSiVN coating with 5 and 11 at% of V concentration deposited on the Al2O3/SiC cutting tools during dry turning of austenitic 316 L stainless steel. The maximum flank wear reduction compared to the uncoated tool for coated tools with 11% and 5% V concentration was 85% and 67%, respectively. The Raman analysis indicated the formation of V2O5 in the cutting zone, which helps to reduce friction and machining forces for the coated tools. Overall, the presence of higher V content (11 at%) enhances the self-lubrication behaviour of the TiAlSiVN coating, accounting to lower fluctuations in cutting forces, superior surface finish, and lower flank wear when compared to the TiAlSiV5N coated and uncoated cutting tools.

Due to the continuously growing demands from high-added-value sectors such as aerospace, e-mobility or biomedical bound-abrasive technologies are the key to achieving extreme requirements. During grinding, energy is rapidly dissipated as heat, generating thermal fields on the ground part which are characterized by high temperatures and very steep gradients. The consequences on the ground part are broadly known as grinding burn. Therefore, the measurement of workpiece temperature during grinding has become a critical issue. Many techniques have been used for temperature measurement in grinding, amongst which, the so-called grindable thermocouples exhibit great potential and have been successfully used in creep-feed grinding operations, in which table speed is low, and therefore, temperature gradients are not very steep. However, in conventional grinding operations with faster table speeds, as most industrial operations are, the delay in the response of the thermocouple results in large errors in the maximum measured value. In this paper, the need for accurate calibration of the response of grindable thermocouples is studied as a prior step for signal integration to correct thermal inertia. The results show that, if the raw signal is directly used from the thermocouples, the deviation in the maximum temperature with respect to the theoretical model is over 200 K. After integration using the calibration constants obtained for the ground junction, the error can be reduced to 93 K even for feed speeds as high as 40 m/min and below 20 K for lower feed speeds. The main conclusion is that, following the proposed procedure, maximum grinding temperatures can be effectively measured using grindable thermocouples even at high values of table speed.

In this study, the novel mobile dynamometric platform, OREKA, was utilized to perform an extensive analysis of the centre of pressure behaviour during different tilt motion exercises. This platform is based on a parallel manipulator mechanism and can perform rotations around both horizontal axes and a vertical translation. A group of participants took part in an experimental campaign involving the completion of a set of exercises. The aim was to evaluate the platform’s potential practical application and investigate the impact of visual on-screen feedback on centre of pressure motion through multiple balance indicators. The use of the OREKA platform enables the study of the impact on a user’s balance control behaviour under different rotational perturbations, depending on the availability of real-time visual feedback on a screen. Furthermore, it presented data identifying postural control variations among clinically healthy individuals. These findings are fundamental to comprehending the dynamics of body balance. Further investigation is needed to explore these initial findings and fully unlock the potential of the OREKA platform for balance assessment methodologies.

Manufacturing structural monolithic components for the aerospace market often involves machining distortion, which entails high costs and material and energy waste in industry. Despite the development of distortion calculation and avoidance tools, this issue remains unsolved due to the difficulties in accurately and economically measuring the residual stresses of the machining blanks. In the last years, the on-machine layer removal method has shown its potential for industrial implementation, offering the possibility to obtain final components from blanks with measured residual stresses. However, this measuring method requires too long an implementation time to be used in-process as part of the manufacturing chains. In this sense, the objective of this paper is to provide a machining distortion prediction method based on bulk residual stress estimation and hybrid modelling. The bulk residual stresses estimation is performed using reduced layer removal measurements. Considering bulk residual stress data and machining-induced residual stress data, as well as geometry and material data, real-part distortion calculations can be performed. For this, a hybrid model based on the combination of an analytical formulation and finite element modelling is employed, which enables us to perform fast and accurate calculations. With the developments here presented, the machining distortion can be predicted, and its uncertainty range can be calculated, in a simple and fast way. The accuracy and practicality of these developments are evaluated by comparison with the experimental results, showing the capability of the proposed solution in providing distortion predictions with errors lower than 10% in comparison with the experimental results.

The ramp-up of new geometries, process parameters, and materials can be enormously time and cost-intensive in Additive Manufacturing. Especially for Laser-Directed Energy Deposition (DED-L), the extreme physical environment at the melt pool results in the need for multiple trial-and-error tests to quantify the process behavior. These tests significantly raise manufacturing expenses. A Digital Twin (DT) of the DED-L process can therefore be of substantial value if the amount of experimental testing is hereby reduced. In the present study, a multiscale DT based on coupling a global and local model has been investigated. The global model simulates the heating of the entire part, whereas the local model represents only a specific region of this global geometry. Using a high-density mesh for the local model enables the simulation of the specific laser-powder interactions and fast-cooling rates typical in DED-L. The results of the global model are used to integrate context awareness about the changing process conditions during the print job into the local model. This process evolvement is impossible to obtain with models of smaller dimensions and is of elemental necessity for accurately simulating multi-clad depositions. The DT was validated on an industrial-grade DED-L machine with in-situ process monitoring capabilities. In all cases, the DT shows a high resemblance with the experimental data and metallographic inspections at a reasonable computational cost.

A new structural typology of a Steel-Reinforced Wooden (SRW) purlin made of rectangular laminated wood and C-section type cold-formed steel is presented in this article. The steel C-section profile is fitted onto the wooden purlin so that both work together as a composite unit. Although the wooden sections are weaker and have a lower elastic modulus than the steel sections, the overall dimensions of the SRW purlins are no larger than the steel C-section purlin sizes. The SRW purlins also form lighter structures than either plain steel or wooden purlins and they therefore have lower CO2 emissions. In addition, lighter purlins reduce the load on the main structure, which in turn reduces the material needed for the main structure of the building. So, reinforcement of the wooden purlin with steel sections within certain areas notably improved performance when compared with ordinary single-material purlins. The use of the SRW purlins can, therefore, improve the overall sustainability of a building. The improvements were analyzed in terms of sustainability and lower weight, as a function of span length and design load. The behaviors of the single material purlins and the SRW purlin were also compared. Both material strength and deformation design criteria and their influence were studied using an analytical approach based on loading and span length. The simple, innovative, and reliable design procedure described in this study ensured compliance with all technical requirements. Moreover, the savings relating to material weight were evaluated, neutralizing the carbon footprint in all cases under analysis.

The expansion of floating offshore wind brings the industry closer to achieving commercial viability. However, the challenging environment characterised by strong winds, waves, and currents, along with the growing size of wind turbines and the dynamic behaviour of floaters, introduces concerns about power production efficiency and system durability due to increased fatigue loads, which subsequently impacts overall costs. In an attempt to mitigate the financial implications coming from alterations made to control strategies and structural elements during the initial design phase, this paper propounds an all-encompassing simulation framework for offshore wind turbines. The current study thoroughly explores the various capabilities of the tool, with a focus on its simulation models. Importantly, the paper highlights the complex interactions between tool models and different controllers. Carefully designed, this tool offers users a variety of functions to enhance system design, fine-tune control strategies, and thoroughly assess performance metrics. The paper elaborates on these aspects, providing an explanation of the tool's capabilities and enhancing the dynamic comparison between the models.

El objetivo del presente trabajo es identificar, clasificar y revisar críticamente los trabajos previos en el campo de la predicción de vida a fatiga a partir de defectos, con el fin de definir una tesis doctoral que inicie una nueva línea de investigación en este campo. Este objetivo principal se puede dividir en una serie de objetivos menores cuya resolución conlleva satisfacer el objetivo principal: • Identificar y clasificar los defectos que surgen en componentes metálicos durante su fabricación. • Conocer el efecto de los defectos en la vida a fatiga de los componentes que los contienen. • Conocer los parámetros y métodos existentes en la literatura para cuantificar el efecto de los defectos en la vida a fatiga del componente que los contiene. • Conocer sobre las posibilidades de tratamiento de los defectos para que la Mecánica de la Fractura pueda ser aplicada. • Conocer las metodologías de cálculo existentes en la literatura para estimar la vida a fatiga de un componente con defectos basado en la Mecánica de la Fractura. • Conocer los métodos numérico-computacionales existentes en la literatura para estimar la vida a fatiga de un componente con defectos.

Se ha profundizado en el tratamiento de las señales acústicas desarrollando un algoritmo en Matlab para analizarlas y determinar los parámetros de filtrado idóneos para una correcta lectura. Se han realizado ensayos experimentales, tanto de diamantado como de rectificado, manteniendo bajas velocidades de avance y combinando diferentes velocidades de giro con reducidas profundidades de pasada para caracterizar la variación de la señal emitida., INGELESA This project proposes the development of technology base don acoustic emission sensors to optimize the detection of the contact gap in grinding. The treatment of the acoustic signals has been deepened by developing an algorithm in Matlab to analyze them and determine the idea filtering parameters for a correct reading. Experimental tests have been carried out, both diamond dressing and grinding, maintaining low feed rates and combining different rotational speeds with reduces pass depths to characterize the variation of the emitted signal.

Este trabajo tiene como objetivo principal la caracterización del comportamiento mecánico de una muela de alúmina vitrificada. Nace de la necesidad por parte de los fabricantes de muelas abrasivas de obtener información que permita identificar los fenómenos de desgaste predominantes que suponen el desgaste prematuro de la herramienta durante el proceso de rectificado. Para la caracterización del material se realiza una serie de ensayos experimentales de flexión a 3 puntos. Se realiza, además, la simulación de un modelo computacional con el fin de caracterizar otras tipologías de muela sin la necesidad de llevar a cabo ensayos experimentales como los realizados. It arises from the need of grinding wheel manufacturers to obtain information to identify the predominant wear phenomena. Initially, an exhaustive analysis of the state of the art in relation to the composite materials mechanical characterization and the grinding process modeling is carried out. The grinding wheels mechanical behavior characterization by performing flexural tests is obtained from of the 3-point bending test. Prismatic specimens of vitrified alumina are analyzed. Two types of abrasive grains are tested, conventional or polycrystalline and monocrystalline, in order to obtain the influence of the crystalline structure on the grinding wheel mechanical properties. This mechanical characterization is carried out both experimentally and numerically, in order to be able to determine the grinding wheel mechanical properties without having to experimentally test each type of wheel composition in the future, being sufficient its numerical simulation. This reduces the costs for the development of new wheel configurations. In addition, the sensorization of the experimental tests is carried out, measuring force and displacement, to obtain from them the value of the fracture stress and the elastic modulus of the material and to study the influence of the crystallographic structure type on the grinding wheel mechanical behavior. On the other hand, samples of the experimentally tested specimens are taken to the singular laboratory of coupled multispectroscopy (LASPEA) of the General Research Services (SGIKER). La fractura frágil es un fallo que suele darse sin apenas deformación plástica previa y de modo instantáneo. No es tan común como los debidos a fatiga o de plastificación generalizada (dúctiles). Las teorías de fallo convencionales como la de Von Mises o Tresca no explican este tipo de casos: la Mecánica de la Fractura se encarga de su estudio. En este trabajo se analizan diversos casos de Mecánica de la Fractura, incluyendo modo I, modo II y modo mixto I y II. Se calcula el factor de intensidad de tensión que corresponda en cada caso, a partir de varios métodos: por un lado basados en fórmulas teóricas, y por otro haciendo uso de modelos de Elementos Finitos. Se expone también cómo debe modelizarse una grieta y su influencia en el proceso de mallado. Finalmente, se presentan los resultados obtenidos para el factor de intensidad de tensión, comparando los teóricos con los extraídos a partir de Elementos Finitos, para poner fin al trabajo con las conclusiones. Este trabajo resulta de gran interés, entre otros ámbitos, para estimaciones de propagación de grieta, ya que el factor de intensidad de tensión es un parámetro básico en orden a estudiar el crecimiento de grieta., Brittle fracture is a failure that occurs with barely prior plastic deformation and instantly. Resumen: En este trabajo se muestra una aplicación informática, desarrollada mediante el software Matlab, para la particularización de los métodos de análisis de fatiga con tensiones multiaxiales a los casos de fatiga uniaxial y de torsión pura. Por lo tanto, dentro de las diferentes ramas en las que se puede clasificar la Ingeniería Mecánica, pertenece al ámbito de Diseño y dentro de éste a la fatiga o, más concretamente, a la fatiga con tensiones multiaxiales. Pese a que existen numerosos métodos de fatiga multiaxial, no hay ninguno que corresponda a la solución definitiva por lo que, en cada situación (material, estado tensional…) conviene emplear uno u otro en función del que mejor se ajuste. Para ello, en principio se deberían realizar ensayos simulando las características a las que va a estar sometida la pieza, pero esto resulta excesivamente costoso y, por tanto, únicamente se suele realizar en casos particulares. Así pues, mediante este software se pretende conseguir una herramienta de ayuda en la identificación del método que mejor se ajuste para cada material, sin tener que realizar los ensayos de fatiga multiaxial. De los múltiples métodos que existen, se van a particularizar seis de los más empleados como son: Sines, Crossland, Matake, Findley, Papuga PCr y Dang Van. Como se puede apreciar, todos ellos corresponden a métodos avanzados de fatiga multiaxial que, a partir de los datos que introducirá el usuario, se particularizarán tanto para el caso uniaxial como de torsión pura y se representarán en sendas gráficas. Junto con estos, se tendrá la posibilidad de representar los resultados experimentales de diversos materiales que se encuentren grabados en la propia librería de la aplicación e incluso, de materiales importados por el propio usuario, para poder visualizar el método que mejor se ajusta. Por último, dado que este trabajo se encuentra estrechamente ligado a la asignatura de Métodos de Análisis y Diseño para Fractura y Fatiga que se imparte en el, In this work, it is shown a computer application, that has been developed in the graphic environment of Matlab, for the particularization of the multiaxial fatigue methods to the uniaxial and pure torsional cases. Therefore, whithin the different mechanical engineering trades, it belongs to the Design field; and more specifically, to the area of fatigue with multiaxial stresses. There are a lot of multiaxial fatigue methods. In spite of this, there is not a definitive method since in each case (material, type of stresses…) it should be used the one that best fits. The correct way would be to carry out experimental tests simulating the real characteristics of the part, but this is excessively costly so, as a result, it is usually carried out only in particular cases. Hence, the development of this software is aimed to provide a tool that could help on the identification of the method that best fits to the material without the need of carry out multiaxial fatigue tests. Despite the many methods that exist, those that are going to be particularized are Sines, Crossland, Matake, Findley, Dang Van and Papuga PCr since they are six of the most commonly used. All of them are advanced multiaxial fatigue methods which, using the material data entered by the user, will be particularized for both the uniaxial and pure torsional cases and then, they could be plotted. In addition, in order to be able to identify the method that best fits, it will be posible to plot the failure points saved in the application’s own library together with those that are added by the user. Finally, as a result of the relationship between this work and the Fracture and Fatigue Analysis and Design Methods subject that is taught in the first year of the UPV/EHU Master´s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, it is intended to provide a complementary tool for its teaching. CASTELLANO: El sector de la automoción es, tanto a nivel europeo como mundial, uno de los sectores industriales con mayor cuota de mercado. Dada la fuerte competencia y legislación al sector, obliga a que las empresas realicen grandes inversiones anualmente para poder seguir siendo competitivos. Bajo este contexto, una de las líneas estratégicas es el abaratamiento de los costes de producción. Por este motivo, la fabricación avanzada es uno de los temas que se encuentran a la orden del día en el campo de la ingeniería mecánica. Esto implica que no solo se estén desarrollando nuevos procesos de fabricación, sino que también se estén mejorando constantemente los ya existentes; todo ello, con objeto de aumentar la eficiencia y calidad de los mismos, sin que ello afecte a los costes de producción. El proyecto que se lleva a cabo en este documento se centra en uno de estos procesos, el conformado de chapa por medio de estampación en caliente. Concretamente, los esfuerzos del trabajo se concentran en aumentar la capacidad de enfriamiento de los conductos, con objeto de reducir el tiempo de proceso, y aumentar así su capacidad productiva. Esto se aborda como un problema de optimización, para cuya resolución se emplean herramientas de cálculo de plena actualidad y cuyo uso está en aumento exponencial desde la última década. This way, due to the high competitiveness as well as regulations on the sector, if companies aim to keep being competitive, years on end, they get pushed to undergo large investments. This is one of the reasons which explain that advanced manufacturing is an up to date topic in mechanical engineering field. This means that not only new manufacturing methods are turning out of the blue, but also that, the existing ones are undergoing a constant development. All in all, the purpose is to improve the efficiency and quality of those processes without a detrimental to the manufacturing costs. The project developed in this document is centred in one of those manufacturing processes, the sheet hot stamping. In particular, the effort is focused on achieving an increase on the thermal efficiency of the cooling ducts, which, eventually, would enhance the process productivity. This is tackled as an optimization problem, where the calculus tools utilized are state of the art on the field of optimization, and which are undergoing an exponential growth since the last few decades. This implies the usage or a large data volume for the training of a predictive algorithm, or the implementation of a genetic algorithm for the resolution of the optimization problem.

Resumen Español: En este trabajo se describirá el proceso de detección, trazado de contornos y exportación, automatizados, de un modelo obtenido mediante una optimización topológica a un archivo CAD, con el objetivo de usarlo para fabricar las piezas mediante fabricación aditiva. Este proceso consiste en idear un método capaz de interpretar los resultados de optimización topológica mediante un conjunto de algoritmos programados en lenguaje \textit{Python}, y tomando como referencia métodos tradicionales de procesamiento de imágenes. Los algoritmos se dividirán en una serie de procesos que comenzarán por filtrar los datos para obtener una imagen binaria, distinguir cada uno de los agujeros o dominios vacíos, extraer los límites de cada contorno y aplicar las técnicas necesarias de suavizado y simplificación de los contornos. Estos algoritmos, aunque tomando su base en otros de distinta finalidad, es un método propio y específico para soluciones de optimización topológica, bidimensional y con elementos cuadrados. Por último, aprovechando que el software FreeCAD integra el lenguaje Python por defecto para crear piezas mediante código, se emplearán los datos obtenidos de los procesos anteriores para generar el modelo CAD correspondiente., In this work, the process to automated detection, contour tracing and export of a model obtained by topology optimization to a CAD file, will be describe with the objective of using it to manufacture parts through additive manufacturing. This process consists of devising a method able to interpret the results of topology optimization using a set of algorithms programmed in \textit{Python} language, and taking traditional image processing methods as a reference. The algorithms will be divided into a series of processes that will begin by filtering the data to obtain a binary image, distinguishing each of the holes or empty domains, extracting the limits of each contour and applying the necessary techniques for smoothing and simplifying the contours. These algorithms, although based on other algorithms with different purposes, is a specific method for two-dimensional topology optimization solutions with square elements. 420 p., Esta tesis presenta el desarrollo de dos métodos de fatiga multiaxial basados en un modelo físico formulado a partir de consideraciones energéticas, siendo su ámbito de aplicación la fatiga de altos ciclos (HCF).El documento contiene una amplia bibliográfica y experimental sobre la Fatiga Multiaxial, incluyendo los principales métodos y ensayos recogidos en la literatura. La principal conclusión que se extrae de esta revisión histórica es que los efectos que más influyen en la fatiga multiaxial son el efecto de las tensiones medias axiales y de torsión.Se ha realizado una campaña de ensayos sobre el acero 34CrNiMo6 incluyendo ensayos estáticos, ensayos de fatiga por flexión rotativa, ensayos de fatiga axial y ensayos de fatiga por torsión. Estos últimos se realizaron en Burdeos en 2016, durante la estancia internacional de un año del doctorando en la École Nationale Superieure d'Arts et Métiers.Teniendo en cuenta los resultados experimentales de las pruebas de torsión, se pudo observar que éstas seguían con precisión un equilibrio energético entre la energía de distorsión estática y la energía de distorsión elástica alterna.Para obtener una mejor correlación experimental, se han desarrollado dos métodos: el primero combina las virtudes de dos de los métodos de invariantes de tensión más exitosos, a saber, los de Crossland y Marin, y se publicó en el International Journal of Fatigue en abril de 2018. Adicionalmente, se ha desarrollado un método totalmente energético que utiliza la energía elástica del cambio de volumen (hidrostática) como mecanismo para modelizar la ruptura de la simetría en el diagrama axial de Haigh, obteniendo una mejor correlación experimental que los métodos existentes ante tensiones medias axiales y de torsión para materiales dúctiles.

Un modelo analítico del proceso de revestimiento por láser para la aleación Inconel 718, tomando en cuenta las propiedades dependientes de la temperatura y aplicable a otros materiales metálicos (AISI 316L ...).2. Un modelo analítico de cristalización de granos (para modelizar la transición equiaxial-columnar), basado en datos experimentales de mapas de solidificación, así como una metodología para determinar todas las constantes necesarias para este modelo analítico. El modelo se desarrollado para la aleación Inconel 718 y es aplicable a otros materiales metálicos. Se ha validado este modelo aplicándolo una metodología que se ha desarrollado para la reutilización de polvo metálico del proceso de revestimiento por láser.3. Una metodología completa para la caracterización del material aportado por revestimiento por láser a través de una propuesta de diseño de probetas recubiertas, además de las técnicas necesarias para interpretar los datos de los ensayos y obtener las propiedades mecánicas tanto a nivel estático, como de las propiedades de fatiga entre material base y el obtenidos por revestimiento láser.4. Una metodología para la modelización y optimización de parámetros del proceso de revestimiento por láser en cordones simples y en configuración multicordón/multicapa por medio de Diseño de Experimentos y con el uso de Regresión Múltiple Linear.5. Se ha modelizado las propiedades mecánicas a nivel estático para la aleación Inconel 718 en material aportado por el proceso de revestimiento por láser a través del uso de teoría fractal y por medio de descriptores estadísticos de la geometría de grano de la microestructura, además de obtener los factores modificadores láser de resistencia a la fatiga a vida infinita (2*106 ciclos), para las probetas con recubrimientos de Laser Cladding.

Tesis completa 222 p. -- Tesis censurada 56 p., El objetivo de este trabajo de investigación es desarrollar una metodología de optimización de superficiesde mecanizado de troquel mediante la predicción de deformaciones térmicas debidas a un mapa detemperaturas heterogéneo en la pieza y a su posterior enfriamiento en el ambiente.Actualmente para obtener las superficies de mecanizado de los troqueles de estampación en caliente separte de la geometría original del cliente. La forma deseada de la pieza final dependerá en gran manera dela superficie de mecanizado utilizada. La modificación de dicha superficie en los sucesivos ciclos decorrección será la que nos ayude a conseguir la forma final de pieza deseada. En los casos en los que lapieza estampada tenga un mapa de temperatura homogéneo el cálculo arriba descrito es suficiente paraobtener resultados óptimos de calidad de pieza sin necesidad de tener que hacer ciclos de corrección yaque no existirá una distorsión térmica debida al enfriamiento. Por otro lado, aquellas piezas que tienen unmapa de temperatura heterogéneo y por tanto una distorsión térmica durante el enfriamiento necesitaranun ciclo de prueba y error durante la fase de puesta a punto para obtener la superficie de mecanizadoóptima y así cumplir con los requisitos de cliente.Para corregir dichas distorsiones térmicas la operación empleada en los casos de menor desviación seráun retoque y pulido manual de la superficie, siendo necesario en los casos de mayor desviación repetir elmecanizado de la superficie de trabajo de troquel. Este proceso de prueba y error tiene un coste muyelevado además de un aumento en el periodo de maduración de los troqueles. The application of new forming processes as the high temperature hot forging in closed dies in an industrial environment still requires further investigation due to the lack of flow stress data at these temperatures. To determine the flow behavior of the 42CrMo4 steel at high temperatures hot compression tests have been carried out in a Gleeble® 3800 thermomechanical tester for a temperature range that covers the material behavior from the hot forging until the Nil Ductility Temperature (1250 °C-1375 °C) and for three different orders of magnitudes for the strain rates (0.1 s−1, 1 s−1 and 10 s−1). Then, the Hansel-Spittel model, widely used in automotive commercial software as FORGE®, has been employed to obtain the adequate constants of the constitutive equation for high temperatures. Finally, the newly obtained flow behavior model has been validated by comparison between experimental and simulated compression tests and by the process simulation of a commercial automotive component comparing the results of the simulation with the already made experimental tests in a laboratory cellule of the new technology. Hence, this paper shows the procedure for the determination and the obtention of a new constitutive model for the 42CrMo4 steel flow stress characterization at a temperature range between 1250 °C–1375 °C. This will contribute in the knowledge of material flow stress behavior models at high temperatures and will allow the prediction or simulation of high temperature hot forging in closed dies processes, enhancing the possibility of the application of these technologies from an industrial point of view.

Surface coatings enable more durable and sustainable solutions to face the degradation of the functional surfaces of high-added-value components. Particularly, metal matrix composites (MMC) are known to mitigate friction efficiently. However, the bonding strength of MMCs severely limits their durability. Hence, it is not sufficient to focus on wear performance. In this work, the flexural strength and interfacial bonding of Stellite 6/WC MMCs produced by Laser Directed Energy Deposition were investigated. The manufactured coatings exhibited a strong bond to the substrate regardless of the WC content, as no delamination was observed. Additionally, all MMC coatings produced under different processing conditions and with the same composition showed similar elastoplastic behaviour, while specimens containing a higher WC% failed prematurely. This was ascribed to the local embrittlement of the reaction layer surrounding the WC particles, which were found to be crack initiation sites.

Machining CMCs under productivity conditions while limiting tool wear and material damage is a challenge for applications such as jet aircraft engines and industrial turbines. This contribution focused on developing a method to characterize the wear of abrasive tools based on fractal dimensions. This solution allows characterization of the state of the tool after each machining and identification of the type of damage to the tool (regular wear of the diamond grains, cleavage, or breakage) and its influence on the cutting forces, in addition to damage to the machined material and the quality of the machined surface. Thus, the chipped area and the maximum chipping are directly associated with the fractal dimension of the tool surface and the metal removal rate of the process. The quality of the surface (Sa, Sz, and Sq) is associated with the fractal dimension of the surface of the tool characterizing the state of the grinding wheel and the radial depth of cut ae characterizing the engagement of the tool in the CMC material. Moreover, the results also demonstrated that the use of an abrasive tool associated with cutting conditions close to milling and not grinding is a viable solution.

This paper aims to provide researchers and engineers with evidence that sensorless machine variable monitoring can achieve tool wear monitoring in broaching in real production environments, reducing production errors, enhancing product quality, and facilitating zero-defect manufacturing. Additionally, broaching plays a crucial role in improving the quality of manufacturing products and processes. These aspects are especially pertinent in aeronautical manufacturing, which serves as the experimental case in this study. The research presents findings that establish a correlation between the variables of a broaching machine’s servomotors and the condition of the broaching tools. The authors propose an effective method for measuring broaching tool wear without external sensors and provide a detailed explanation of the methodology, enabling reproducibility of similar results. The results stem from three trials conducted on an electromechanical vertical broaching machine, utilizing cemented carbide grade broaching tools to broach a superalloy Inconel 718 test piece. The machine data collected facilitated the training of a set of machine learning models, accurately estimating tool wear on the broaches. Each model demonstrates high predictive accuracy, with a coefficient of determination surpassing 0.9.

Studying the effect of quench and tempering heat treatments on steel, more specifically screening the effect of the austenitizing, quenching, and tempering conditions on mechanical properties, can be extremely material- and time-consuming when standard tensile testing specimens are employed. Jominy bar end quench testing has been used as a standard method to reduce the resources that are required for this type of screening. Jominy bar testing by itself shows, though, the limitation of yielding only hardness and microstructure as a result. In the last few years, the small punch test (SPT) standard has been developed. This technique can obtain an estimation of tensile mechanical properties with miniaturized specimens, which can be dissected from Jominy bars. The paper proposes a new testing methodology for screening the outcome of heat treatment conditions by combining the Jominy bar testing and SPT. Quench and tempering of API 5L X65Q pipe steel is used as a case study to describe the proposed methodology. The ability of the Jominy with SPT to detect variations in the mechanical properties produced by heat treatments is shown. This methodology can be directly applied as a high-throughput testing approach in the optimization of heat treatments.

In aero-engine production, the dovetails (firtrees) of turbine discs are manufactured by broaching. Introducing innovative micro-geometry modifications to broaching tools can significantly influence cutting force, energy consumption, tool wear, and cutting edge temperature during broaching. Therefore, this study aims to study this influence by treating the cutting edge by brushing with ceramic bristles. The results reveal that the increase in cutting edge radius significantly influences the cutting force, particularly its component in the forward direction, equating it to the tangential component. Furthermore, during the experimental tests, considerable wear was observed on the cutting edge, which generated strong vibrations detected through the force signals, accounting to poor surface quality and a higher coefficient of friction close to 1. The 2D simulations generated information on temperature distribution along the cutting edge profile. On the other hand, was observed the presence of subsurface damage characterized by distorted grain boundaries aligned with the cutting direction, along with the formation of uninterrupted non-serrated chips due to thermoplastic deformation. Further, 12 µm cutting edge radius exhibits the best performance in terms of cutting force, temperature, and surface quality.

Fatigue properties of parts are of particular concern for safety-critical structures. It is well-known that discontinuities in shape or non-uniformities in materials are frequently a potential nucleus of fatigue failure. This is especially crucial for the Ti6Al4V alloy, which presents high susceptibility to the notch effect. This study investigates how post-processing treatments affect the mechanical performance of Ti6Al4V samples manufactured by laser powder bed fusion technology. All the fatigue samples were subjected to a HIP cycle and post-processed by machining and using combinations of alternative mechanical and electrochemical surface treatments. The relationship between surface properties such as roughness, topography and residual stresses with fatigue performance was assessed. Compressive residual stresses were introduced in all surface-treated samples, and after tribofinishing, roughness was reduced to 0.31 ± 0.10 µm, which was found to be the most critical factor. Fractures occurred on the surface as HIP removed critical internal defects. The irregularities found in the form of cavities or pits were stress concentrators that initiated cracks. It was concluded that machined surfaces presented a fatigue behavior comparable to wrought material, offering a fatigue limit superior to 450 MPa. Additionally, alternative surface treatments showed a fatigue behavior equivalent to the casting material.

Industrial communication protocols are protocols used to interconnect systems, interfaces, and machines in industrial environments. With the advent of hyper-connected factories, the role of these protocols is gaining relevance, as they enable the real-time acquisition of machine monitoring data, which can fuel real-time data analysis platforms that conduct tasks such as predictive maintenance. However, the effectiveness of these protocols is largely unknown and there is a lack of empirical evaluation which compares their performance. In this work, we evaluate OPC-UA, Modbus, and Ethernet/IP with three machine tools to assess their performance and their complexity of use from a software perspective. Our results show that Modbus provides the best latency figures and communication has different complexities depending on the used protocol, from the software perspective.

This research continues the previous work “Robotic-Arm-Based Force Control in Neurosurgical Practice”. In that study, authors acquired an optimal control arm speed shape for neurological surgery which minimized a cost function that uses an adaptive scheme to determine the brain tissue force. At the end, the authors proposed the use of reinforcement learning, more specifically Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG), to create an agent that could obtain the optimal solution through self-training. In this article, that proposal is carried out by creating an environment, agent (actor and critic), and reward function, that obtain a solution for our problem. However, we have drawn conclusions for potential future enhancements. Additionally, we analyzed the results and identified mistakes that can be improved upon in the future, such as exploring the use of varying desired distances of retraction to enhance training.

281 p., The main contribution of this document lies on the development of a new algorithm to integrate the equations of multibody dynamics using Newmark. This method takes advantage of the use of fundamental nullspace basis to integrate the equations in the manifold, so unconditionally stable behavior without the introduction of numerical damping can be achieved. This is quite similar to the concept of using minimal coordinates but, in this case, instead of using the same coordinates for an interval, the same nullspace used to solve a step is used to define the coordinate set at a moderate cost.Along with this main contribution, other contributions have also been achieved: A method for the general linearization of the equations (including equilibrium and constraints) regard less of the chosen orientation representation. This method simplifies the use of different systems of representation when this is required. With the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme climate events in cities, it is essential to develop multi-scale and multi-hazard design tools to ensure urban climate resilience. A designed approach to urban development across spatial scales offers the opportunity to integrate diverse fields to create a strong multidisciplinary knowledge base and avoid fragmented planning approaches. This paper proposes a process-based methodological framework for climate resilient urban design-integrating analysis of climate impact with concerns of local communities. A combined focus on climate impact and co-benefits enables a design process with the ability to promote adaptation and mitigation while also addressing diverse urban challenges and responding to local needs and priorities. The proposed methodological framework is applied in the context of the climate resilient urban redevelopment of the Porte de Montreuil district in Paris, France. The results show that the Porte de Montreuil area is at risk from heat waves as a result of the urban characteristics of the area. However, it is possible to suggest specific design measures that integrate local planning priorities with climate resilient design measures to decrease the risk and improve climate resilience in the area.

In design matters, mechanisms with deformable elements are a step behind those with rigid bars, particularly if dimensional synthesis is considered a fundamental part of mechanism design. For the purposes of this work, a hybrid rigid–flexible four-bar mechanism has been chosen, the input bar being a continuum tendon of constant curvature. The coupler curves are noticeably more complex but offer more possibilities than the classical rigid four-bar counterpart. One of the objectives of this work is to completely characterize the coupler curves of this hybrid rigid–flexible mechanism, determining the number and type of circuits as well as constituent branches. Another important aim is to apply optimization techniques to the dimensional synthesis of path generation. Considerable progress in finding the best design solutions can be obtained if all the acquired knowledge about the coupler curves of this hybrid mechanism is integrated into the optimization algorithm.

Critical linear buckling load calculation is one of the possible ways to check structural stability. Structural analysis programs usually model beams and columns with just one element, but this is not enough to obtain an accurate value of the critical buckling load when the buckling mode is associated with an effective length that is less than twice the element length. This paper presents a method for the accurate calculation of the buckling load of frames modeled with only one finite element per structural element. For this purpose, a local correction is applied to some elements a few times until convergence is achieved. The validity of the presented method is confirmed by several examples ranging from simple canonical cases to large structures.

Al mismo tiempo, las texturas cristalográficas pueden alcanzar diferentes grados de intensidad en función de los parámetros de fabricación láser. Un aspecto esencial del proceso LPBF es el desarrollo de patrones cristalinos asociados a cada configuración de fabricación LPBF; de esta forma, es posible hasta cierto punto estar seguros delas orientaciones cristalinas primarias que se desarrollarán en el material respecto al sistema de referencia del componente. Para ello, esta Tesis considera la repetibilidad de los patrones cristalinos asociados a diferentes configuraciones de fabricación de LPBF, mostrando que es posible obtener las orientaciones cristalinas esperadas en un rango experimental.La metodología propuesta busca obtener las propiedades mecánicas del material en función de diferentes orientaciones de los vectores de carga para mejorar el diseño mecánico de componentes LPBF, haciendo que los componentes se fabriquen en orientaciones donde los vectores de deformación principales coincidan principalmente con las direcciones cristalinas de mayor resistencia mecánica. Además, esta tesis considera el posprocesamiento por mecanizado y las formas de mejorar la estabilidad del mecanizado y disminuir la resistencia al corte. Dado que la orientación que aumenta la resistencia mecánica no siempre coincide con la orientación que disminuye la resistencia al cizallamiento por corte, es necesario considerar la optimización multiobjetivo como una herramienta para obtener configuraciones de fabricación que permitan obtener una solución de diseño equilibrada donde se establezcan las prioridades de diseño de los componentes. Virtual sensing is the process of using available data from real sensors in combination with a model of the system to obtain estimated data from unmeasured points. In this article, different strain virtual sensing algorithms are tested using real sensor data, under unmeasured different forces applied in different directions. Stochastic algorithms (Kalman filter and augmented Kalman filter) and deterministic algorithms (least-squares strain estimation) are tested with different input sensor configurations. A wind turbine prototype is used to apply the virtual sensing algorithms and evaluate the obtained estimations. An inertial shaker is installed on the top of the prototype, with a rotational base, to generate different external forces in different directions. The results obtained in the performed tests are analyzed to determine the most efficient sensor configurations capable of obtaining accurate estimates. Results show that it is possible to obtain accurate strain estimations at unmeasured points of a structure under an unknown loading condition, using measured strain data from a set of points and a sufficiently accurate FE model as input and applying the augmented Kalman filter or the least-squares strain estimation in combination with modal truncation and expansion techniques.

This work is the result of a problem of premature development of rail corrugation found on a new metro line. As urgent solutions, a rail grinding was carried out and friction modifier started to be applied. Experimental corrugation measurements have been taken periodically in this line at 60 control points since 2018, and an extensive database has been collected since then. As a second stage, a computationally efficient new model has been developed to predict corrugation growth under different running conditions. The aim of this work has been to obtain feasible solutions to delay corrugation growth in metro type lines.

This research analyses the viability of using cryogenic cooling combined with MQL (minimum quantity lubrication) lubrication, under CryoMQL technology, as a cutting fluid in the industrial environment to justify the increase in the environmental footprint generated by its use compared to MQL in stand-alone mode. For this analysis, a set of milling tests were carried out on carbon steel AISI 1045, which is one of the most commonly used materials in the business day-to-day. In this set of tests, the evolution of cutting edge wear and energy consumption of both technologies were recorded to check their tool life through technological and environmental analysis. Thus, we sought to discern whether the energy savings derived from the machining process make up for the greater environmental footprint initially generated by the use of CryoMQL technology itself. The results obtained show how the use of CryoMQL not only increased tool life, but also allowed an increase in productivity by increasing cutting speeds by 18%; in other words, thanks to this technology, a more technologically advanced and environmentally friendly process is obtained. By increasing tool life by 30%, a reduction in energy consumption is achieved together with cost savings, which implies that ECO2 machining has economic and ecological benefits.

Statement of problem. Digital occlusal analyzers allow the recording of dental contact forces. Some authors assume a unique location for the center of contact forces at the position of maximum intercuspation, while others indicate variations in dental contact forces when recorded at different times of the day. Which approach is more appropriate is unclear. Purpose. The purpose of this in vitro study was to analyze whether a change in the balance of masticatory forces influences the location of the center of contact forces and its magnitude. Material and methods. Three different dental casts, selected under dental criteria, were mounted in maximum intercuspation on a semiadjustable articulator equipped with a pattern indicating 9 different force application points (intersection point between 3 longitudinal rows and 3 transverse columns). A force of constant magnitude (169 N) was applied 10 times at each of the application points, and occlusal forces were recorded with a digital occlusal analyzer. Then, two variables were studied: the location of the center of contact forces and its magnitude. Each force application position (9 positions × 3 dental casts=27 in total) was repeated 10 times, and measured data were statistically analyzed with 2-way repeated measures ANOVA (a=.05) test. Results. The repeatability of the method indicated that the coefficient of variation mean was 0.37% in the location of the center of contact forces and that its magnitude was 3.70%. The 2-way repeated measures ANOVA test revealed statistically significant variations in the location of the center of contact forces and its magnitude, revealing that longitudinal changes of the application point of masticatory forces affected the magnitude of contact forces and that longitudinal and transverse changes of the application point of masticatory forces affected the location of the center of contact forces. Parallel continuum mechanisms are a type of compliant mechanisms comprising a rigid end-effector connected to a fixed frame by flexible and slender elements in a closed-kinematic morphology, being their flexibility the source of mobility. Solving the position problem involves the static equilibrium of the whole device considering the nonlinear large deformations of slender elements. Numerical iterative solutions are already available to solve real-time simulations. However, an assembled solution, which meets both geometric conditions and static equilibrium, is needed to start the process. A comprehensive Kinematic Analysis in the classical sense is not fully established yet. The aim of the paper is to propose a procedure that solves the full inverse and forward kinematic problems for planar three degrees of freedom systems, hence obtaining the multiple solutions arising from the closed-loop structure and the multiplicity of the deformation mode of slender links. From those solutions, finding of the different aspects that comprise the workspace is possible, as well as determining singularities and instability loci.

166 p., Las piezas de aleación de aluminio son ampliamente utilizadas en el sector aeronáutico, entre otros, para los componentes de cobertura y pieles del fuselaje. Estas piezas suelen ser muy delgadas y por lo tanto su rigidez es reducida. El ensamblaje y el fresado químico solían emplearse para fabricarlas, pero presentan serios inconvenientes, por lo que la apuesta por el fresado mecánico es cada vez más decidida. Con todo, este método entraña diversos retos derivados de la baja rigidez de las piezas, como afrontar las vibraciones que suceden en ellas, minimizar las distorsiones producidas al redistribuirse las tensiones residuales, así como lograr una apropiada calidad superficial.Existen varias técnicas para afrontar estos retos, como son el empleo de utillajes flexibles y reconfigurables, y la selección de las condiciones óptimas de fresado por medio del cálculo de los lóbulos de estabilidad. Sin embargo, en el caso de las pieles aeronáuticas, en los utillajes flexibles una gran parte de la piel queda sin soporte y sin la rigidización adecuada, por lo que el fresado mecánico se hace difícil,se recurre a costosos utillajes ad hoc, o se opta en su lugar por el ensamblaje o el fresado químico, los cuales son ineficientes, contaminantes y de peores propiedades mecánicas.El propósito de la presente tesis es impulsar el uso de los utillajes flexibles para pieles aeronáuticas. Para ello, se han realizado ensayos de fresado mecánico en placas delgadas con distintas condiciones de corte y distintas geometrías de pieza, empleando una configuración experimental que emula a la de pieles aeronáuticas en utillajes flexibles. Se han calculado sus lóbulos de estabilidad y se han analizado la vibración, la rugosidad, el espesor final y las fuerzas que se producen en este fresado. Asimismo, se ha elaborado un modelo de fuerza empírico, integral y predictivo enfocado en las pieles aeronáuticas con el que optimizar las condiciones de corte, la trayectoria de la herramienta, la geometría

191 p., El corte por electroerosión por hilo (WEDM) es un método no convencional de mecanizado ampliamente utilizado en la fabricación de componentes de alto valor añadido para las industrias aeroespacial,biomédica y automotriz, entre otras. Esto se atribuye a su alta precisión de mecanizado, eficiencia,estabilidad y capacidad de mecanizado de diversas formas complejas. El proceso WEDM se ha utilizado particularmente en aplicaciones de herramientas para el mecanizado de diversos materiales y se ha desarrollado en máquinas de alta tecnología. Sin embargo, todavía existen ciertos aspectos fundamentales relacionados con el proceso de mecanizado que se hacen falta investigar mas al fondo. Para mejorar la calidad y la eficiencia del mecanizado, una comprensión profunda del proceso de mecanizado y de los principios de mecanizado es esencial e indispensable. Esta tesis está dedicada a profundizar en el análisis de algunos aspectos fundamentales del proceso WEDM a través de experimentos, simulación numérica y discusiones relacionadas, y cubre el análisis profundo de todo el proceso de WEDM. Los resultados de este trabajo serán útiles para una mejor comprensión y desarrollo del proceso de mecanizado en el futuro.
