Search

Multi-messenger observations of binary neutron star mergers provide a unique opportunity to constrain the dense-matter equation of state. Although it is known from quantum chromodynamics that hadronic matter will undergo a phase transition to exotic forms of matter, e.g., quark matter, the onset density of such a phase transition cannot be computed from first principles. Hence, it remains an open question if such phase transitions occur inside isolated neutron stars or during binary neutron star mergers, or if they appear at even higher densities that are not realized in the Cosmos. In this article, we perform numerical-relativity simulations of neutron-star mergers and investigate scenarios in which the onset density of such a phase transition is exceeded in at least one inspiralling binary component. Our simulations reveal that shortly before the merger it is possible that such stars undergo a "reverse phase transition", i.e., densities decrease and the quark core inside the star disappears leaving a purely hadronic star at merger. After the merger, when densities increase once more, the phase transition occurs again and leads, in the cases considered in this work, to a rapid formation of a black hole. We compute the gravitational-wave signal and the mass ejection for our simulations of such scenarios and find clear signatures that are related to the post-merger phase transition, e.g., smaller ejecta masses due to the softening of the equation of state through the quark core formation. The symmetry energy and its density dependence are crucial inputs for many nuclear physics and astrophysics applications, as they determine properties ranging from the neutron-skin thickness of nuclei to the crust thickness and the radius of neutron stars. Recently, PREX-II reported a value of $0.283\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.071\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{fm}$ for the neutron-skin thickness of $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$, implying a slope parameter $L=106\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}37\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}$, larger than most ranges obtained from microscopic calculations and other nuclear experiments. We use a nonparametric equation of state representation based on Gaussian processes to constrain the symmetry energy ${S}_{0}$, $L$, and ${R}_{\mathrm{skin}}^{^{208}\mathrm{Pb}}$ directly from observations of neutron stars with minimal modeling assumptions. The resulting astrophysical constraints from heavy pulsar masses, LIGO/Virgo, and NICER clearly favor smaller values of the neutron skin and $L$, as well as negative symmetry incompressibilities. Combining astrophysical data with PREX-II and chiral effective field theory constraints yields ${S}_{0}=33.{0}_{\ensuremath{-}1.8}^{+2.0}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}$, $L=5{3}_{\ensuremath{-}15}^{+14}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}$, and ${R}_{\mathrm{skin}}^{^{208}\mathrm{Pb}}=0.1{7}_{\ensuremath{-}0.04}^{+0.04}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{fm}$.

The nuclear symmetry energy is a key quantity in nuclear (astro)physics. It describes the isospin dependence of the nuclear equation of state, which is commonly assumed to be almost quadratic. In this work, we confront this standard quadratic expansion of the equation of state with explicit asymmetric nuclear-matter calculations based on a set of commonly used Hamiltonians including two- and three-nucleon forces derived from chiral effective-field theory. We study, in particular, the importance of nonquadratic contributions to the symmetry energy, including the nonanalytic logarithmic term introduced by Kaiser [Phys. Rev. C 91, 065201 (2015)]. Our results suggest that the nonquadratic contribution to the symmetry energy can be systematically determined from the various Hamiltonians employed, and we obtain $0.{74}_{\ensuremath{-}0.08}^{+0.11}$ MeV (or $\ensuremath{-}1.{02}_{\ensuremath{-}0.08}^{+0.11}$ MeV for the potential term with the effective-mass contribution) at nuclear saturation density, while the logarithmic contribution to the symmetry energy is relatively small and model-dependent. We also employ the meta-model approach to study the impact of the higher-order contributions on the neutron-star crust-core transition density, and find a 5% correction.

We report a quantum Monte Carlo calculation of the equation of state of symmetric nuclear matter using local interactions derived from chiral effective field theory up to next-to-next-to-leading order fit to few-body observables only. The empirical saturation density and energy are well reproduced within statistical and systematic uncertainties. We have also derived the symmetry energy as a function of the density, finding good agreement with available experimentally derived constraints at saturation and twice saturation density. We find that the corresponding pressure is also in excellent agreement with recent constraints extracted from gravitational waves of the neutron-star merger GW170817 by the LIGO-Virgo detection.

Thirty years ago, Steven Weinberg published his seminal paper on "Nuclear Forces from chiral Lagrangians" which has revolutionized the field of theoretical nuclear physics. Nowadays, interactions derived from chiral effective field theory are routinely used to describe nuclear systems ranging from atomic nuclei to the dense matter explored in the core of neutron stars with theoretical uncertainty estimates. Recent observations of neutron stars with gravitational waves and X-ray timing provide unprecedented access to the equation of state (EoS) of cold dense matter at densities difficult to realize in terrestrial experiments. At the same time, predictions for the EoS with reliable uncertainty estimates from chiral effective field theory ($\chi$EFT) bound our theoretical ignorance. In this work, we analyze astrophysical data using a nonparametric representation of the neutron star EoS conditioned on $\chi$EFT to directly constrain the underlying physical properties of the compact objects. We discuss how the data alone constrain the EoS at high densities when we condition on $\chi$EFT at low densities. We also demonstrate how to exploit astrophysical data to directly test the predictions of $\chi$EFT for the EoS up to twice nuclear saturation density, and estimate the density at which these predictions might break down. We find that the existence of massive pulsars, gravitational waves from GW170817, and NICER observations of PSR J0030+0451 favor $\chi$EFT predictions for the EoS up to nuclear saturation density over a more agnostic analysis by a factor of 7 for the quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations used in this work. While $\chi$EFT predictions using QMC are fully consistent with gravitational-wave data up to twice nuclear saturation, NICER observations suggest that the EoS stiffens relative to these predictions at nuclear saturation density. Additionally, we marginalize over the uncertainty in the density at which $\chi$EFT begins to break down, constraining the radius of a $1.4\,M_\odot$ neutron star to $R_{1.4} = 11.40^{+1.38}_{-1.04}$ ($12.54^{+0.71}_{-0.63}$) km and the pressure at twice nuclear saturation density to $p(2n_\mathrm{sat}) = 14.2^{+18.1}_{-8.4}$ ($28.7^{+15.3}_{-15.0}$) $\mathrm{MeV}/\mathrm{fm}^3$ with massive pulsar and gravitational-wave (and NICER) data.

We perform a joint Bayesian inference of neutron-star mass and radius constraints based on GW170817, observations of quiescent low-mass X-ray binaries (QLMXBs), photospheric radius expansion X-ray bursts (PREs), and X-ray timing observations of J0030+0451. With this data set, the form of the prior distribution still has an impact on the posterior mass-radius (MR) curves and equation of state (EOS), but this impact is smaller than recently obtained when considering QLMXBs alone. We analyze the consistency of the electromagnetic data by including an "intrinsic scattering" contribution to the uncertainties, and find only a slight broadening of the posteriors. This suggests that the gravitational-wave and electromagnetic observations of neutron-star structure are providing a consistent picture of the neutron-star mass-radius curve and the EOS., 6 pages, 4 figures and supplemental material

At supranuclear densities, explored in the core of neutron stars, a strong phase transition from hadronic matter to more exotic forms of matter might be present. To test this hypothesis, binary neutron-star mergers offer a unique possibility to probe matter at densities that we can not create in any existing terrestrial experiment. In this work, we show that, if present, strong phase transitions can have a measurable imprint on the binary neutron-star coalescence and the emitted gravitational-wave signal. We construct a new parameterization of the supranuclear equation of state that allows us to test for the existence of a strong phase transition and extract its characteristic properties purely from the gravitational-wave signal of the inspiraling neutron stars. We test our approach using a Bayesian inference study simulating 600 signals with three different equations of state and find that for current gravitational-wave detector networks already twelve events might be sufficient to verify the presence of a strong phase transition. Finally, we use our methodology to analyze GW170817 and GW190425, but do not find any indication that a strong phase transition is present at densities probed during the inspiral., 17 pages, 11 figures

In recent years, nuclear physics has benefited greatly from the development of powerful ab initio many-body methods and their combination with interactions from chiral effective field theory. With increasing computational power and continuous development of these methods, we are entering an era of precision nuclear physics. Indeed, uncertainties from nuclear Hamiltonians now dominate over uncertainties from many-body methods. Neutron stars are astrophysical objects of extremes, reaching the highest densities we can observe in the cosmos, and probing matter under conditions that cannot be recreated in terrestrial experiments. In August 2017, the first neutron-star merger has been observed, which provided compelling evidence that these events are an important site for r-process nucleosynthesis. Furthermore, the gravitational-wave signal of such events might shed light upon the nature of strongly interacting matter in the neutron-star core. To understand these remarkable events, reliable nuclear physics input is essential. In this contribution, I explain how to use chiral effective field theory and advanced many-body methods to provide a consistent and systematic approach to strongly inter- acting systems from nuclei to neutron stars with controlled theoretical uncertainties. I will discuss recent results for the equation of state relevant for the nuclear astrophysics of neutron stars and neutron-star mergers.

The properties of neutron stars are determined by the nature of the matter that they contain. These properties can be constrained by measurements of the star's size. We obtain stringent constraints on neutron-star radii by combining multimessenger observations of the binary neutron-star merger GW170817 with nuclear theory that best accounts for density-dependent uncertainties in the equation of state. We construct equations of state constrained by chiral effective field theory and marginalize over these using the gravitational-wave observations. Combining this with the electromagnetic observations of the merger remnant that imply the presence of a short-lived hyper-massive neutron star, we find that the radius of a $1.4\,\rm{M}_\odot$ neutron star is $R_{1.4\,\mathrm{M}_\odot} = 11.0^{+0.9}_{-0.6}~{\rm km}$ (90% credible interval). Using this constraint, we show that neutron stars are unlikely to be disrupted in neutron-star black-hole mergers; subsequently, such events will not produce observable electromagnetic emission., Comment: 39 pages, 4 figures

To obtain an understanding of the structure and reactions of nuclear systems from first principles has been a long-standing goal of nuclear physics. In this respect, few- and many-body systems provide a unique laboratory for studying nuclear interactions. During the past decades, the development of accurate representations of the nuclear force has undergone substantial progress. Particular emphasis has been devoted to chiral effective field theory (EFT), a low-energy effective representation of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Within chiral EFT, many studies have been carried out dealing with the construction of both the nucleon-nucleon ($N\!N$) and three-nucleon ($3N$) interactions. The aim of the present article is to give a detailed overview of the chiral interaction models that are local in configuration space, and show recent results for nuclear systems obtained by employing these local chiral forces.

We investigate how a phase transition from neutron-star matter to spin-polarized neutron matter affects the equation of state and mass-radius relation of neutron stars. While general extension schemes for the equation of state allow for high pressures inside neutron stars, we find that a phase transition to spin-polarized neutron matter excludes extreme regimes. Hence, such a transition limits the maximum mass of neutron stars to lie below 2.6$-$$2.9 \, M_{\odot}$, depending on the microscopic nuclear forces used, while significantly larger masses could be reached without these constraints. These limits are in good agreement with recent constraints extracted from the neutron-star merger GW170817 and its electromagnetic counterpart. Assuming the description in terms of spin-polarized neutron matter to be valid in the center of neutron stars, we find that stars with a large spin-polarized domain in their core are ruled out by GW170817., 10 pages, 3 figures, published version

In recent years, the combination of precise quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods with realistic nuclear interactions and consistent electroweak currents, in particular those constructed within effective field theories (EFTs), has lead to new insights in light and medium-mass nuclei, neutron matter, and electroweak reactions. This compelling new body of work has been made possible both by advances in QMC methods for nuclear physics, which push the bounds of applicability to heavier nuclei and to asymmetric nuclear matter and by the development of local chiral EFT interactions up to next-to-next-to-leading order and minimally nonlocal interactions including $\Delta$ degrees of freedom. In this White Paper we present the potential of the Enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for determining the nature of dense matter; neutron star cores host an extreme density regime which cannot be replicated in a terrestrial laboratory. The tightest statistical constraints on the dense matter equation of state will come from pulse profile modelling of accretion-powered pulsars, burst oscillation sources, and rotation-powered pulsars. Additional constraints will derive from spin measurements, burst spectra, and properties of the accretion flows in the vicinity of the neutron star. Interactions from chiral effective field theory have been successfully employed in a broad range of \textit{ab initio} calculations of nuclei and nuclear matter, but it has been observed that most results of few- and many-body calculations experience a substantial residual regulator and cutoff dependence. In this work, we investigate the behavior of local chiral potentials at leading order under variation of the cutoff scale for different local regulators. When varying the cutoff, we require that the resulting interaction produces no spurious bound states in the deuteron channel. We find that, for a particular choice of leading-order operators, nucleon-nucleon phase shifts and the deuteron ground-state energy converge to cutoff-independent plateaus, for all regulator functions we investigate. The correlation of the tidal polarizabilities $\Lambda_1$-$\Lambda_2$ for GW170817 is predicted by combining dense-matter equations of state (EOSs) that satisfy nuclear physics constraints with the chirp mass and mass asymmetry for this event. Our models are constrained by calculations of the neutron-matter EOS using chiral effective field theory Hamiltonians with reliable error estimates up to once or twice the nuclear saturation density. In the latter case, we find that GW170817 does not improve our understanding of the EOS. We contrast two distinct extrapolations to higher density: a minimal model (MM) which assumes that the EOS is a smooth function of density described by a Taylor expansion and a more general model parametrized by the speed of sound that admits phase transitions. This allows us to identify regions in the $\Lambda_1$-$\Lambda_2$ plots that could favor the existence of new phases of matter in neutron stars. We predict the combined tidal polarizability of the two neutron stars in GW170817 to be $80\le \tilde{\Lambda}\le 580$ ($280\le \tilde{\Lambda}\le 480$ for the MM), which is smaller than the range suggested by the LIGO-Virgo data analysis. Local chiral effective field theory interactions have recently been developed and used in the context of quantum Monte Carlo few- and many-body methods for nuclear physics. In this work, we go over detailed features of local chiral nucleon-nucleon interactions and examine their effect on properties of the deuteron, paying special attention to the perturbativeness of the expansion. We then turn to three-nucleon interactions, focusing on operator ambiguities and their interplay with regulator effects. We then discuss the nuclear Green's function Monte Carlo method, going over both wave-function correlations and approximations for the two- and three-body propagators. Chiral effective field theory is a framework to derive systematic nuclear interactions. It is based on the symmetries of quantum chromodynamics and includes long-range pion physics explicitly, while shorter-range physics is expanded in a general operator basis. The number of low-energy couplings at a particular order in the expansion can be reduced by exploiting the fact that nucleons are fermions and therefore obey the Pauli exclusion principle. The antisymmetry permits the selection of a subset of the allowed contact operators at a given order. When local regulators are used for these short-range interactions, however, this "Fierz rearrangement freedom" is violated. In this paper, we investigate the impact of this violation at leading order (LO) in the chiral expansion. We construct LO and next-to-leading order (NLO) potentials for all possible LO-operator pairs and study their reproduction of phase shifts, the ${}^4$He ground-state energy, and the neutron-matter energy at different densities. We demonstrate that the Fierz rearrangement freedom is partially restored at NLO where subleading contact interactions enter. I construct a model of the inner crust of neutron stars using interactions from chiral effective field theory (EFT) in order to calculate its equation of state (EOS), shear properties, and the spectrum of crustal shear modes. I systematically study uncertainties associated with the nuclear physics input, the crust composition, and neutron entrainment, and estimate their impact on crustal shear properties and the shear-mode spectrum. I find that the uncertainties originate mainly in two sources: The neutron-matter EOS and neutron entrainment. I compare the spectrum of crustal shear modes to observed frequencies of quasi-periodic oscillations in the afterglow of giant $\gamma$-ray bursts and find that all of these frequencies could be described within uncertainties, which are, however, at present too sizable to infer neutron-star properties from observations., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, published version

Ab initio calculations provide direct access to the properties of pure neutron systems that are challenging to study experimentally. In addition to their importance for fundamental physics, their properties are required as input for effective field theories of the strong interaction. In this work, we perform auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo calculations of the ground and first excited state of two neutrons in a finite box, considering a simple contact potential as well as chiral effective field theory interactions. We compare the results against exact diagonalizations and present a detailed analysis of the finite-volume effects, whose understanding is crucial for determining observables from the calculated energies. Using the L\"uscher formula, we extract the low-energy S-wave scattering parameters from ground- and excited-state energies for different box sizes., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

The dense matter equation of state (EOS) determines neutron star (NS) structure but can be calculated reliably only up to one to two times the nuclear saturation density, using accurate many-body methods that employ nuclear interactions from chiral effective field theory constrained by scattering data. In this work, we use physically motivated ansatzes for the speed of sound $c_S$ at high density to extend microscopic calculations of neutron-rich matter to the highest densities encountered in stable NS cores. We show how existing and expected astrophysical constraints on NS masses and radii from X-ray observations can constrain the speed of sound in the NS core. We confirm earlier expectations that $c_S$ is likely to violate the conformal limit of $c_S^2\leq c^2/3 $, possibly reaching values closer to the speed of light $c$ at a few times the nuclear saturation density, independent of the nuclear Hamiltonian. If QCD obeys the conformal limit, we conclude that the rapid increase of $c_S$ required to accommodate a $2 $ M$_\odot$ NS suggests a form of strongly interacting matter where a description in terms of nucleons will be unwieldy, even between one and two times the nuclear saturation density. For typical NSs with masses in the range $1.2-1.4~$ M$_\odot$, we find radii between $10$ and $14$ km, and the smallest possible radius of a $1.4$ M$_{\odot}$ NS consistent with constraints from nuclear physics and observations is $8.4$ km. Regulator functions applied to two- and three-nucleon forces are a necessary ingredient in many-body calculations based on chiral effective field theory interactions. These interactions have been developed recently with a variety of different cutoff forms, including regulating both the momentum transfer (local) and the relative momentum (nonlocal). While in principle any regulator that suppresses high momentum modes can be employed, in practice artifacts are inevitable in current power counting schemes. Artifacts from particular regulators may cause significant distortions of the physics or may affect many-body convergence rates, so understanding their nature is important. Here we characterize the differences between cutoff effects using uniform matter at Hartree-Fock and second-order in the interaction as a testbed. This provides a clean laboratory to isolate phase-space effects of various regulators on both two- and three-nucleon interactions. We test the normal-ordering approximation for three-nucleon forces in nuclear matter and find that the relative size of the residual 3N contributions is sensitive to the employed regularization scheme., Comment: 29 pages, 27 figures

We present quantum Monte Carlo calculations of light nuclei, neutron-$\alpha$ scattering, and neutron matter using local two- and three-nucleon ($3N$) interactions derived from chiral effective field theory up to next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO). The two undetermined $3N$ low-energy couplings are fit to the $^4$He binding energy and, for the first time, to the spin-orbit splitting in the neutron-$\alpha$ $P$-wave phase shifts. Furthermore, we investigate different choices of local $3N$-operator structures and find that chiral interactions at N$^2$LO are able to simultaneously reproduce the properties of $A=3,4,5$ systems and of neutron matter, in contrast to commonly used phenomenological $3N$ interactions., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 table - updated version: small wording changes, one reference change

Chiral effective field theory (EFT) enables a systematic description of low-energy hadronic interactions with controlled theoretical uncertainties. For strongly interacting systems, quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods provide some of the most accurate solutions, but they require as input local potentials. We have recently constructed local chiral nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions up to next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO). Chiral EFT naturally predicts consistent many-body forces. In this paper, we consider the leading chiral three-nucleon (3N) interactions in local form. These are included in auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo (AFDMC) simulations. We present results for the equation of state of neutron matter and for the energies and radii of neutron drops. We present details of the derivation of local chiral effective field theory interactions to next-to-next-to-leading order, and show results for nucleon-nucleon phase shifts and deuteron properties for these potentials. We then perform systematic auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo calculations for neutron matter based on the developed local chiral potentials at different orders. This includes studies of the effects of the spectral-function regularization and of the local regulators. We present the first quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations with chiral effective field theory (EFT) interactions. To achieve this, we remove all sources of nonlocality, which hamper the inclusion in QMC calculations, in nuclear forces to next-to-next-to-leading order. We perform auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo (AFDMC) calculations for the neutron matter energy up to saturation density based on local leading-order, next-to-leading order, and next-to-next-to-leading order nucleon-nucleon interactions. Our results exhibit a systematic order-by-order convergence in chiral EFT and provide nonperturbative benchmarks with theoretical uncertainties. For the softer interactions, perturbative calculations are in excellent agreement with the AFDMC results. This work paves the way for QMC calculations with systematic chiral EFT interactions for nuclei and nuclear matter, for testing the perturbativeness of different orders, and allows for matching to lattice QCD results by varying the pion mass., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

The neutron-matter equation of state constrains the properties of many physical systems over a wide density range and can be studied systematically using chiral effective field theory (EFT). In chiral EFT, all many-body forces among neutrons are predicted to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO). We present details and additional results of the first complete N3LO calculation of the neutron-matter energy, which includes the subleading three-nucleon as well as the leading four-nucleon forces, and provides theoretical uncertainties. In addition, we discuss the impact of our results for astrophysics: for the supernova equation of state, the symmetry energy and its density derivative, and for the structure of neutron stars. Finally, we give a first estimate for the size of the N3LO many-body contributions to the energy of symmetric nuclear matter, which shows that their inclusion will be important in nuclear structure calculations., published version; 21 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables

We calculate the chiral condensate in neutron matter at zero temperature based on nuclear forces derived within chiral effective field theory. Two-, three- and four-nucleon interactions are included consistently to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO) of the chiral expansion. We find that the interaction contributions lead to a modest increase of the condensate, thus impeding the restoration of chiral symmetry in dense matter and making a chiral phase transition in neutron-rich matter unlikely for densities that are not significantly higher than nuclear saturation density., Comment: published version, 6 pages, 4 figures

Neutron matter is related to the physics of neutron stars and that of neutron-rich nuclei. Moreover, Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods offer a unique way of solving the many-body problem non-perturbatively, providing feedback on features of nuclear interactions and addressing scenarios that are inaccessible to other approaches. Our contribution goes over two recent accomplishments in the theory of neutron matter: a) the fusing of QMC with chiral effective field theory interactions, focusing on local chiral 3N forces, and b) the first attempt to find an ab initio solution to the problem of static response.
