The Ansanto Valley's Mefite, one of the Earth's largest non‐volcanic CO2 gas emissions, is distinguished by its cold natural carbon dioxide springs. These emissions originate from the intricate tectonics and geodynamics of the southern Apennines in Italy. Known for over two millennia for its lethal concentration of CO2 and other harmful gases, the Mefite has a reputation for being toxic and dangerous. Despite its historical significance and unique geological features, there is a lack of information on the microbial diversity associated with the Mefite's gas emissions. This study presents an integrated exploration of the microbial diversity in the mud soil, using high‐throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA (Prokaryotes) and ITS2 (Fungi), alongside a geochemical site characterisation. Our findings reveal that the Mefite's unique environment imposes a significant bottleneck on microbial diversity, favouring a select few microbial groups such as Actinobacteria and Firmicutes for Prokaryotes, and Basidiomycota for Fungi. Coastal ecosystems, encompassing land and marine environments and hosting substantial biodiversity, are among the most threatened worldwide. The European Habitats Directive prioritises coastal habitats and species, requiring legislative, direct protection, monitoring, and informational measures. Accurate habitat and species monitoring is crucial to conservation efforts, yet biodiversity research in complex, ever-changing environments like coastal areas is difficult. Citizen Science may bridge biodiversity assessment and eco-friendly monitoring by incorporating non-scientists into the data collection for scientists and stakeholders. A Citizen Science approach supported by a dedicated iNaturalist project (called Wild Coast CASCADE) was implemented to obtain a complete monitoring framework that includes observations of many taxa in terrestrial, aquatic, and transitional dynamic coastal environments in the Central Italian Adriatic coast. We explored data gathered focusing on the IUCN Red List species, the species and habitats of European conservation concern, and the non-native species. Between 2020 and 2023, we collected 3784 records covering 742 species, with 81% meeting the "research grade criteria", and these were retained for subsequent research. Citizen Science volunteers have collected 291 georeferenced animal records from the global IUCN Red List, 51 plant species from 14 species that are indicators of the presence of habitats of European Conservation Concern, and 44 non-native plants and animals. Our results provide evidence that citizen research projects can effectively assist in monitoring coastal–marine habitats and species. They also underline the potential of Citizen Science for biodiversity conservation and emphasize the importance of public engagement in conservation efforts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Mefite in the Ansanto Valley is one of the largest and oldest cold natural carbon dioxide springs (CNCDS) known in the world. This site is characterized by toxic concentrations of CO2 and other harmful gases, and few plant species can survive in this environment. Among these plants, there is an aberrant Genista tinctoria population previously described as G. anxantica. This study aims to advance understanding of evolution over small geographical scales in an extreme environment using G. tinctoria populations from low and high CO2 environments. To investigate differentiation of the Mefite population, we analysed plastid sequences and microsatellite data for populations in the surrounding area. Considering the genetic results, it is evident that the population of the Mefite has an exclusive genetic pattern from both plastid and nuclear points of view with the presence of significant genetic barriers for both genomes analysed, which would point to the isolation of this population from neighbouring G. tinctoria populations. The population of G. tinctoria from the Mefite shows evidence of genetic differentiation from the nearby populations and the genetic indices show discrete variation. Recruitment was confirmed in the Mefite population, an indication that fitness is maintained despite the extreme local conditions. Our results indicate that the potent selection pressure imposed by the Mefite atmosphere has driven genetic differentiation of the local population from nearby G. tinctoria populations. A correct taxonomic rank evaluation and some conservation remarks are also proposed. Our study demonstrates that CO2 concentrations can influence population differentiation and adaptation in plants in a similar way to atmospheric sulphur, herbicides or edaphic conditions. Forest soils harbour a vast array of organisms that govern the processing of organic matter. Through their trophic interactions, they give rise to carbon flows that sustain soil ecosystem functioning. Understanding how soil food webs shape carbon flows may enhance our knowledge about the role of biodiversity on soil processes.In this work, we assembled trophic networks representing soil food webs of two beech forests during spring and autumn, and compiled mass‐balanced models quantifying carbon flows between their components. These models were investigated using network analysis to identify the role of the components on carbon flow, cycling and functional trophic relationships. Moreover, we explored how the structure of carbon exchanges promote efficiency and stability.Results indicate the importance of indirect interactions. Most trophic groups exhibit a diffuse dependency on all the compartments for their carbon requirement although certain groups such as Collembola play the role of hubs in distributing carbon. Indirect interactions often reverse the impacts of direct trophic relationships being antagonistic to the direction of change predicted based on predator–prey interactions. The high incidence of generalist feeding habits increases the redundancy of energy channels thereby making such food webs more resilient against perturbations but at the expense of carbon transfer efficiency.Although differences can be observed across sites and periods, food web structure rather than environmental variability seems to be the main factor responsible for patterns of carbon flows in the two beech forests. Invasive alien plants (IAP) pose a major threat to biodiversity and have a negative impact on the integrity and conservation status of plant communities. Mediterranean dunes are widely exposed to IAP, due to their environmental heterogeneity and the anthropogenic pressures to which they are subjected. The current study explored the possible existence of critical thresholds of IAP cover/abundance and dune path impacts that may cause the decline in diagnostic species cover in shifting and transition dunes. A random sampling of 126 plots in areas invaded and not invaded by IAP across the Italian Adriatic dunes has been used and the recorded species have been classified in ecological guilds. In order to explore the effect of plant community composition and distances from dune paths on the diagnostic species cover, a Random Forest regression model has been fitted. The results revealed that three main critical thresholds can be detected concerning IAP total cover, IAP Oenothera stucchii Soldano abundance and the distance from dune paths and they work differently in shifting and transition dunes. The identification of such cut-off points provides useful insights for an array of actions to preserve the biodiversity of the Mediterranean coastal dunes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Mediterranean Basin can be considered as a natural laboratory with which to study the effects of sea currents in the dispersal of coastal plant species that use hydrochory. Pancratium maritimum is a perennial geophyte, with a wide distribution along Mediterranean coasts. We aim to provide a timeframe for the origin of the diversification of this plant, to clarify its phylogeographical structure and to investigate the role of currents in the Mediterranean Sea in influencing spatial patterns of its genetic distribution. The phylogeographic history was analysed using 50 populations. A genetic structure analysis and divergence time estimation was performed using plastid sequences. Five haplotypes were detected, of which two were the most abundant; a third was observed in the central Mediterranean, and two rare haplotypes were present in the eastern Mediterranean. The genetic breaks were concordant with the direction of the major Mediterranean currents. The divergence time estimation for the origin of P. maritimum was located at the end of the Neogene (mid Pliocene to mid Pleistocene). We showed the importance of sea currents in the Mediterranean in acting both as a means of dispersal and as a barrier to the distribution and evolution of P. maritimum due to the special adaptations of its seeds.
