Abstract

At the J-PARC Muon Science Facility (MUSE), the MuSEUM collaboration is now performing new precision measurements of the ground state hyperfine structure (HFS) of both muonium and muonic helium atoms. High-precision measurements of the muonium ground-state HFS are recognized as one of the most sensitive tools for testing bound-state quantum electrodynamics theory to precisely probe the standard model and determine fundamental constants of the positive muon magnetic moment and mass. The same technique can also be employed to measure muonic helium HFS, obtain the negative muon magnetic moment and mass, and test and improve the theory of the three-body atomic system. Measurements at zero magnetic field have already yielded more accurate results than previous experiments for both muonium and muonic helium atoms. High-field measurements are now ready to start collecting data using the world's most intense pulsed muon beam at the MUSE H-line. We aim to improve the precision of previous measurements ten times for muonium and a hundred times or more for muonic helium. We review all the key developments for these new measurements, focusing on the high-field experiment, and report the latest results and prospects., Comment: Proc. PSAS'2024

Abstract

Precision measurements of slow neutron cross sections with atoms have several scientific applications. In particular the n-$^{4}$He s-wave scattering length is important to know both for helping to constrain the nuclear three-body interaction and for the proper interpretation of several ongoing slow neutron experiments searching for other types of neutron-atom interactions. We present new measurements of the ratios of the neutron differential scattering cross sections for natural isotopic-abundance mixtures of the noble gases He, Ar, Kr, and Xe to natural isotopic abundance Ne. These measurements were performed using a recently developed neutron scattering apparatus for gas samples located on a pulsed slow neutron beamline which was designed to search for possible exotic neutron-atom interactions and employs both neutron time of flight information and a position-sensitive neutron detector for scattering event reconstruction. We found agreement with the literature values of scattering cross sections inferred from Ar/Ne, Kr/Ne and Xe/Ne differential cross section ratios over the $q$ range of $1 - 7$ nm$^{-1}$. However for the case of He/Ne we find that the cross section inferred differs by 11.3% (7.6 $\sigma$) from previously-reported values inferred from neutron phase shift measurements, but is in reasonable agreement with values from other measurements. The very large discrepancy in the He/Ne ratio calls for a new precision measurement of the n-$^{4}$He scattering length using neutron interferometry.

Abstract

"Neutron Optics and Physics (NOP/ BL05)" at MLF in J-PARC is a beamline for studies of fundamental physics. The beamline is divided into three branches so that different experiments can be performed in parallel. These beam branches are being used to develop a variety of new projects. We are developing an experimental project to measure the neutron lifetime with total uncertainty of 1 s (0.1%). The neutron lifetime is an important parameter in elementary particle and astrophysics. Thus far, the neutron lifetime has been measured by several groups; however, different values are obtained from different measurement methods. This experiment is using a method with different sources of systematic uncertainty than measurements conducted to date. We are also developing a source of pulsed ultra-cold neutrons (UCNs) produced from a Doppler shifter are available at the unpolarized beam branch. We are developing a time focusing device for UCNs, a so called "rebuncher", which can increase UCN density from a pulsed UCN source. At the low divergence beam branch, an experiment to search an unknown intermediate force with nanometer range is performed by measuring the angular dependence of neutron scattering by noble gases. Finally the beamline is also used for the research and development of optical elements and detectors. For example, a position sensitive neutron detector that uses emulsion to achieve sub-micrometer resolution is currently under development. Abstract

We describe an experimental search for deviations from the inverse square law of gravity at the nanometer length scale using neutron scattering from noble gases on a pulsed slow neutron beamline. By measuring the neutron momentum transfer ($q$) dependence of the differential cross section for xenon and helium and comparing to their well-known analytical forms, we place an upper bound on the strength of a new interaction as a function of interaction length $\lambda$ which improves upon previous results in the region $\lambda < 0.1\,$nm, and remains competitive in the larger $\lambda$ region. A pseudoexperimental simulation developed for this experiment and its role in the data analysis described. Abstract

The neutron lifetime is one of the basic parameters in the weak interaction, and is used for predicting the light element abundance in the early universe. Our group developed a new setup to measure the lifetime with the goal precision of 0.1% at the polarized beam branch BL05 of MLF, J-PARC. The commissioning data was acquired in 2014 and 2015, and the first set of data to evaluate the lifetime in 2016, which is expected to yield a statistical uncertainty of O(1)%. Abstract

The measurement of the ground state hyperfine structure of muonic helium has the potential to improve the precision of the mass of the negative muon by a factor of 50 or more. The mass of the negative muon is very important because it enables us to test the CPT theorem by comparison with positive muon mass. We aim to measure the hyperfine structure of muonic helium with a precision 1000 times higher than previous experiments [1,2] using the highintensity muon beam at J-PARC and have already obtained results better than the current precision in zero-field measurements in a test experiment in March 2021. To further improve the precision, we plan to measure in a high magnetic field and incorporate a technique that can produce highly polarized muonic helium atom [3]. In this paper, we will report on these developments.

Abstract

We performed a polarized neutron transmission asymmetry measurement utilizing the 139La(n,γ)140La reaction. This measurement involved the use of a recently developed 3He spin filter mounted on the J-PARC MLF beam line number 4 (BL04). The resulting value of the longitudinal asymmetry AL = (11.7 ± 1.1)% was found to be in good agreement with existing values in the literature suggesting that the method by which we polarize the neutron beam is not a significant source of uncertainty. This preliminary work represents a first step toward future measurements of the angular correlation in (n̅,Υ) reactions necessary in the search for enhanced T-Violation in compound nuclei.

Abstract

Parity violating effects enhanced by up to 106 times compared to proton-proton scattering have been observed in several neutron capture induced compound nuclei. This enhancement is explained as an interference between an s-wave and a p-wave amplitude (s-p mixing). Theory predicts that this mechanism can also enhance T-violating effects. For estimation of this enhancement in a promising candidate nucleus, we measured the angular distribution of γ-rays in the (n,γ) reaction induced in a 139La target. Experiments were performed at J-PARC, using a germanium detector array at an intense neutron beam. Analysis of the observed angular dependence around the 0.74 eV p-wave resonance allowed us to determine the ratio of the partial p-wave neutron width to the total neutron width in the entrance channel of the compound nucleus. We also report our development of a 3He spin filter needed as an epithermal-neutron polarizer for the T-violation search.

Abstract

The decay lifetime of free neutrons (∼880 s) is an important parameter of the weak interaction and for Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. However, results of measurements currently show discrepancies depending on the method used. As most experiments nowadays employ ultra cold neutrons, we have developed a new cold-beam experiment which we perform at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex. As a special feature, a polarized neutron beam is bunched by a spin flip chopper. A time projection chamber operated with He and CO2 gas, including a well-controlled amount of 3He, is used for detection of the beta-decays and simultaneous determination of the beam intensity. Using the data between 2014 and 2016, we evaluated our first, preliminary result of the neutron lifetime as 896 ± 10(stat.) −10+14(sys.) s. We plan several upgrades to achieve our precision goal of 1 s.

Abstract

Recently published results and ongoing experimental efforts to search for deviations from the inverse square law of gravity at the nanometer length scale using slow neutron scattering from the noble gases are discussed. Using the pulsed slow neutron beamline BL05 at the Materials and Life Sciences Facility at J-PARC, we measured the neutron momentum transfer (q) dependence of the differential scattering cross section for the noble gases He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe. By comparing to the distributions obtained using pseudo-experimental Monte Carlo simulations and forming ratios between Xe and He, we placed an upper bound on the strength of a new interaction as a function of interaction length λ which improved upon previous results in the region λ < 0.1 nm, and remains competitive in the larger λ region. Additionally we describe how we are using our technique to extract relative values of the total neutron scattering cross sections of the noble gases, as well as how we plan to measure the neutron-electron scattering length using the NOVA instrument on BL21 at J-PARC.
