Abstract

International audience; The good corrosion resistance of the M5Framatome cladding used in pressurised water reactors (PWR) may be due to the irradiation induced modifications of this alloy. Several ion irradiation tests were performed on the M5Framatome alloy to reproduce the in-core metallurgical changes, followed by corrosion tests on the irradiated samples. Proton irradiation experiments at 350 °C produced long, nanometric niobium-rich precipitates. After irradiation, a significant decrease in the oxidation rate could be observed, highlighting the beneficial effect of irradiation on the corrosion behaviour. In addition, the amorphisation of Zr(Nb, Fe)2 intermetallic precipitates did not change the oxidation rate of the M5Framatome alloy.

Abstract

International audience; In future thermonuclear fusion reactors, like ITER and DEMO, plasma-facing components with tungsten armor material will have to sustain high thermal fluxes (10 MW/m² in steady state and 20 MW/m² in quasi-steady-state). For such extreme conditions, tungsten may reach temperatures higher than 1000 °C and, consequently can be prone to recrystallize, which can limit the lifetime of the divertor targets under cycling thermal loadings. Characterization of recrystallization kinetics involves the use of different methods and devices (furnace, laser heating) depending on the annealing temperature regime to be analyzed. For these methods, the heating and the subsequent characterization of around 10 samples (5 × 4 × 4 mm) per annealing temperature is needed. In this article, a method is proposed to quantify the recrystallization kinetics between 1300 °C and 1600 °C using a limited number of samples and heating conditions. The basic idea is to induce a steady-state temperature gradient in tungsten rods by heating one side of the rod using a laser heating system. Tungsten rods (50 × 4 × 5 mm) were annealed with this method. The resulting microstructures are characterized using optical microscopy and hardness measurements. The different stages of tungsten softening are clearly evidenced. These first results can be considered as a proof of concept for the use of such a methodology to assess tungsten recrystallization at high temperature.

International audience; The progress of science and technology has considerably increased the quality of life - especially the material standard of living - (e.g. disappearance of famines, increase in life expectancy) On the other hand, climate change, reduction of biodiversity, decrease of natural resources, and increase of environmental risks are some of the consequences of this human activities. Addressing these new challenges will require holistic comprehension and actionable approaches. The mitigation of these consequences requires effective responses in terms of transition. In this context, engineering and design students need time but also adapted curricula focused on sustainability and eco design concepts to support evolution of their skills, their knowledge and their culture. This article discusses the integration of a strong sustainability knowledge within the ideation process through a pedagogical experience, in order to develop new knowledge-based approaches, methodologies and tools

Abstract

International audience; Printing graphene-based nanomaterials on flexible substrates has become a burgeoning platform for next-generation technologies. Combining graphene and nanoparticles to create hybrid nanomaterials has been proven to boost device performance, thanks to their complementary physical and chemical properties. However, high growth temperatures and long processing times are often required to produce high-quality graphene-based nanocomposites. For the first time, we report a novel scalable approach for additive manufacturing of Sn patterns on polymer foil and their selective conversion into nanocomposite films under atmospheric conditions. A combination of inkjet printing and intense flashlight irradiation techniques is studied. Light pulses that are selectively absorbed by the printed Sn patterns cause a temperature of over 1000 °C to be reached locally in a split second without damaging the underlying polymer foil. The top surface of the polymer foil at the interface with printed Sn becomes locally graphitized and acts as a carbon source, transforming printed Sn into Sn@graphene (Sn@G) core–shell patterns. Our results revealed a decrease in electrical sheet resistance, with an optimal value (Rs = 72 ± 2 Ω/sq) reached when light pulses with an energy density of 12.8 J/cm2 were applied. These graphene-protected Sn nanoparticle patterns exhibit excellent resistance against air oxidation for months. Finally, we demonstrate the implementation of Sn@G patterns as electrodes for Li-ion microbatteries (LIBs) and triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), showing remarkable performance. This work offers new insight into the development of a versatile, eco-friendly, and cost-effective technique for producing well-defined patterns of graphene-based nanomaterials directly on a flexible substrate using different light-absorbing nanoparticles and carbon sources.

Abstract

International audience; A stopping criterion for fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based iterative schemes in computational homogenization is proposed and investigated numerically. This criterion is based on the separate evaluation and comparison of the discretization and iteration errors on the computed fields. Some estimators for these errors are proposed and their performances are assessed on a set of 2D problems in the frameworks of both the classical FFT-based methods and these that use a modified version of the featured Green's operator. In particular, two novel strategies for estimating the discretization error are investigated: either using an image processing approach or transposing to the FFT-based setting the constitutive relation error that is well-established in the context of the finite element method. It is then shown that the resulting stopping criterion leads to a better control of the global error on the computed effective property compared to the classical criterion based on the residual of the iterative scheme alone.

Abstract

Experiments are conducted in water films falling along the bottom wall of a weakly inclined rectangular channel of height $5$ mm in the presence of a laminar counter-current air flow. Boundary conditions have been specifically designed to avoid flooding at the liquid outlet, thus allowing us to focus on the wave dynamics in the core of the channel. Surface waves are excited via coherent inlet forcing before they come into contact with the air flow. The effect of the air flow on the height, shape and speed of two-dimensional travelling nonlinear waves is investigated and contrasted with experiments of Kofman, Mergui & Ruyer-Quil (Intl J. Multiphase Flow, vol. 95, 2017, pp. 22–34), which were performed in a weakly confined channel. We observe a striking difference between these two cases. In our strongly confined configuration, a monotonic stabilizing effect or a non-monotonic trend (i.e. the wave height first increases and then diminishes upon increasing the gas flow rate) is observed, in contrast to the weakly confined configuration where the gas flow is always destabilizing. This stabilizing effect implies the possibility of attenuating waves via the gas flow and it confirms recent numerical results obtained by Lavalle et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 919, 2021, R2) in a superconfined channel.

Abstract

International audience; Advanced austenitic materials are foreseen as cladding for next-generation fast reactors. They can suffer from void swelling, which is related to radiation-induced dislocation that may be strongly affected by chemical composition. Yet, the underlying mechanism leading to this latter effect is still unclear. Here, we investigate pure Ni, Ni-0.4wt.%Cr and Ni-0.4/0.8/1.2wt.%Ti as face-centered-cubic model materials, to gain an insight into the fundamental mechanism of solute effects on radiation damage in the early stage of irradiation. The microstructural evolution is studied using transmission electron microscopy in-situ self-ion irradiation at 450 and 510°C for doses up to 0.18 dpa, and supported by modelling using kinetic rate theory.Results reveal that micro-alloying has a spectacular impact on the dislocation loop nature, Burgers vector, mobility, number density, size, growth rate, and the critical sample thickness for their formation. A tiny amount of Ti effectively reduces the loop mobility and growth rate, and stabilizes self-interstitial loops against vacancy loops, depending on Ti content and temperature. Based on kinetic rate theory including production bias, this is explained by the suppression of interstitial loss to the surfaces. In the alloys, the equal distribution of Burgers vector and the relative strong increase of loop density is ascribed to the lower loop mobility and stacking fault energy, while both experiment and modeling show that irradiation leads to a Ti depletion at defects. Based on DFT data and present experimental evidences, we attribute these effects to the thermal segregation of oversized Ti atoms at strained lattice sites surrounding the defects.

National audience; Jusqu'à présent, la recherche sur la soutenabilité s’est centrée principalement au niveau macro sur les acteurs institutionnels et les efforts de changement systémique. Au niveau micro, les chercheurs ont étudié le choix des produits par les consommateurs et leur élimination après usage [1].Le projet D-TechnoSS, financé par l'Agence nationale de la recherche (ANR) (ANR-20-CE10-0006), vise à développer une meilleure compréhension des mécanismes de prise de conscience et de changements des comportements associés à l’adoption de démarches de conception participatives dans une posture de soutenabilité forte.Le projet D-TechnoSS vise à explorer la proposition d’une intégration forte entre société et système de production. Dans le cadre du projet, il sera question de favoriser la prise de conscience des défis sociétaux, de faciliter le changement de comportements peu soutenables et d’accompagner le système productif dans on retour au seuil des limites planétaires. La méthode de recherche est basée sur une approche expérimentale, pour proposer un modèle d’évaluation de la soutenabilité dans une posture de soutenabilité forte.Le projet D-TechnoSS a donc pour ambition de mieux comprendre et accompagner les transitions sociales ainsi que l’adaptation nécessaire du système de production et des méthodes de conception.

Abstract

International audience; Tungsten is the privileged option as plasma-facing material for the divertor region of ITER and DEMO tokamaks. Under repeated high thermal fluxes (10 MW/m² in steady state and 20 MW/m² in quasi-steady state), Plasma-Facing Units (PFU) can be damaged through thermal fatigue phenomena, which are enhanced by in-service tungsten recrystallization. Slowing down tungsten recrystallization is thus a way to optimize PFU lifetime. Tungsten-recrystallization kinetics is known to depend upon the initial microstructure. In the present paper, a mean-field model is developed to highlight microstructural effects upon tungsten restoration mechanisms at high temperature. The effects of grain size, initial recrystallized fraction, initial dislocation density, i.e. stored energy, and dislocation density distribution have been investigated. It is clearly quantified how a higher stored energy can lead to a drastic increase of the recrystallization rate. It is also shown how a prior recovery stage helps to slow down recrystallization. Finally, a conclusion is brought upon the ability of such a mean field model to optimize the tungsten initial microstructure for fusion engineering.

International audience; The importance of sleep analysis lies in the preventive detection of health problems. Several types of research and scientific studies have shown that memory problems and cognitive problems are the direct results of poor quality sleep. Cognitive frailty is not the only frailty influenced by the lack or poor quality of sleep. Frailty can be defined as a lack of physiological reserves that no longer allow us to respond to needs or too stressful situations (illness, hospitalization, fall, etc.). In this article, we will present a part of our research work that aims to have a collaborative data analysis approach for the detection of entry into a state of fragility that will lead to becoming a resident in a nursing home, by using two different machine learning methods; supervised and non-supervised classification. We will use as inputs several sleep data.

Abstract

International audience; We introduce a particular localization of the Minkowski functionals to characterize and discriminate different random spatial structures. The aim of this paper is to present a method estimating the typical grain elongation ratio in a homogeneous Boolean model. The use of this method is demonstrated on a range of Boolean models of rectangles featuring fixed and random elongation ratio. An optimization algorithm is performed to determine the elongation ratio which maximize the likelihood function of the probability density associated with the local perimeter measure. Therefore, the elongation ratio of the typical grain can be deduced.

Abstract

Local Binary Pattern (LBP) are considered as a classical descriptor for texture analysis, it has mostly been used in pattern recognition and computer vision applications. However, the LBP gets information from a restricted number of local neighbors which is not enough to describe texture information, and the other descriptors that get a large number of local neighbors suffer from a large dimensionality and consume much time. In this regard, we propose a novel descriptor for texture classification known as Circular Parts Local Binary Pattern (CPLBP) which is designed to enhance LBP by extending the area of neighborhood from one to a region of neighbors using polar coordinates that permit to capture more discriminating relationships that exists amongst the pixels in the local neighborhood which increase efficiency in extracting features. Firstly, the circle is divided into regions with a specific radius and angle. After that, we calculate the average gray-level value of each part. Finally, the value of the center pixel is compared with these average values. The relevance of the proposed idea is validate in databases Outex 10 and 12. A complete evaluation on benchmark data sets reveals CPLBP's high performance. CPLBP generates the score of 99.95 with SVM classification.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents a numerical study of capillary interfaces using the Single Component Multi-Phase Shan-Chen model, which is based on the lattice Boltzmann method. Despite the simplicity of the model, it has been shown to be effective and the present study aims to test its ability to correctly reproduce the physics of multiphase systems. To this end, several benchmark simulations were carried out in the configurations of a drop on a flat wall and then on a spherical surface to characterize the wetting behavior and relate explicitly the contact angle to model parameters. In addition, the capillary forces induced by a liquid bridge between two spherical particles were numerically calculated. We show that the results obtained are in agreement with experimental and theoretical results from the literature. The model is thus accurate in addressing the wetting behavior and capillary interfaces in unsaturated granular soils despite the fact that surface tension and contact angles are not explicit parameters of the model. To this respect, explicit relationships with Shan-Chen parameters are provided.

Abstract

International audience; The main part of recycling processes are carried out in chemical engineering reactors that involve multiphase flows with dense dispersed phase. In a study and modeling approach of these processes, the description and characterization of hydrodynamic phenomena is crucial. A variety of techniques allows us to realize this type of measurement, but the most used one is the direct imaging associated with an efficient image processing. Recently, deep learning algorithms have proven to be very effective in solving image based problems, which led to the use of these algorithms to extract critical information in chemical engineering apprentices. The method employed in this paper relies on a deep learning based algorithm dedicated to the prediction of 3D features of multiphase flows using 2D projected images. The performance of the method has been evaluated both on synthetic images and on real images of beads in a dispersed phase.

Abstract

Track 3-DCN: Digital Communications and Networking; International audience; An original stochastic model to simulate complex 3D microstructures of SOFC-electrodes with gradient and global heterogeneity has been developed. The synthetic microstructures generated by the model were compared to real microstructures of Ni-YSZ electrodes acquired by tomography. Theability of the model to generate representative microstructures has been demonstrated. Finally, the model was fitted on real electrode reconstructions. The results obtained shown that the phase surface area density curves and several microstructural properties of the synthetic microstructures were very close to those of the real ones. The flexibility of the model and the results obtained shown that it could be used in the framework of numerical microstructural optimizations of SOFC-electrodes.

International audience; Un critère d'arrêt pour les schémas itératifs d'homogénéisation périodique par FFT est proposé et évalué numériquement. Ce critère est basé sur la distinction et la comparaison entre les erreurs de discrétisation et de convergence. Des estimateurs de ces erreurs sont proposés et leurs performances sont comparées sur des cas tests 2D. On évalue ensuite un critère de convergence basé sur l'un de ces estimateurs d'erreur de discrétisation et on montre que cela permet d'aboutir à une erreur totale mieux contrôlée qu'un critère basé uniquement sur le résidu du schéma itératif considéré.

Abstract

International audience; Comprehension of oxidation processes under the influence of an external polarization is still a challenge, despite numerous past studies. In this study, thermogravimetric analysis technique coupled with in situ application of an electric voltage was used to investigate oxidation of zirconium. The first technical challenge was to modify the thermobalance to integrate it with polarization equipment without perturbation of measurement and of oxidation behavior. Surprisingly, the oxidation rate was found to remain independent on the applied voltage, despite a large range of applied potentials, ± 200 V. Modeling of oxidation rates according to diffusion mechanism combined with investigation of polarization curves of the metal/oxide/electrode system has shown that a high electrical resistance appears at the oxide/electrode interface, even with addition of an intermediate gold layer. This resistance prevents from generating sufficient voltage drop through the oxide layer (> 10 V), necessary to modify the kinetics. Nevertheless, meaningful electrochemical properties using analogy with solid-oxide fuel cells have been observed, allowing to propose a comprehensive approach of oxidation phenomena under polarization.

Abstract

International audience; During the last decades, advances in 3D characterization have been achieved to image the Solid Oxide Cells (SOC) electrode microstructure with a high spatial resolution by using different techniques (FIB-SEM, X-ray tomography…). These techniques enable to study the links between the electrode microstructural and physical properties. However, this approach is time consuming as it requires the manufacturing and the characterization of several cells. An alternative consists in generating representative synthetic microstructures by numerical means in order to increase the amount of data required to establish the correlations linking the electrode microstructure parameters. The proposed talk will then introduce different ways to model and simulate virtual SOC electrode microstructures, of both two-phase electrodes and three-phased composite electrodes, using stochastic geometry. The performance, representativeness and flexibility of such models will be demonstrated and validated on real 3D reconstructions. Abstract

International audience; Liquid Composite Moulding processes are considered as promising and effective to manufacture structure composite parts reinforced with synthetic and natural fabrics. The main novelty of this work is the estimation of capillary pressure (Pcap) for both fabrics at different fibre volume fractions (Vf) and with different liquids. From the previous works, the Pcap was defined as the equivalence between Washburn’s equation and Darcy’s law while our novel model for the capillary wicking could predict very well the swelling behaviour of natural fabrics. The combination of our Pcap definition and our novel model was explored in this study. Linear trends, thresholds and extremums of Pcap at different conditions were found for the first time. These results are relevant to estimate the importance of capillary effects during Liquid Composite Moulding processes and extremely valuable for numerical models at the fibrous scale to predict voids formation.

Abstract

International audience; The research in energy efficient and sustainable technologies for buildings is currently an important issue because of their high-energy consumption. In this regard, VO2-based thermochromic windows are showing promising results in terms of their energy savings ability. However, no previous study has investigated their life cycle environmental impacts and, in order to develop a sustainable product from its foundations, these environmental issues should be accounted since the early stage development. Therefore, the first objective of this work is to conduct a life cycle assessment (LCA) of VO2-based technologies for passive thermal control. Moreover, a second objective is to address a more generic question related to the use of prospective LCA in early stage research in materials engineering laboratories. For this purpose, a comparative LCA between a VO2-based thermochromic window and a standard window is performed, studying the environmental impacts from the VO2 production until the end-of-life. The nonrenewable and renewable cumulative energy demands as well as the impact on climate change are studied. Results show that there is a positive balance between the thermochromic and the standard window environmental impacts. Moreover, guidance to lower the environmental impacts associated to the production phase is given.

Abstract

Performance of metallic seals used between face-turned surfaces is related to their abilities to flow plastically in order to fill up cavities between wedge-shaped asperities. Double wedge indentation is therefore a simple way to investigate what happens at such a seal-flange interface. In this paper, finite element analyses of single and double wedge indentations are conducted. A particular attention is paid to the effects of hardening parameters on the resulting hardness. First, it is observed that single wedge indentation hardness can be well-approximated by the adaptation of analytic models initially developed for cone indentation problems. Second, it is shown that interaction between indentation-strain field during double wedge indentation starts once the bearing ratio is about 25%. It leads to a significant mean contact pressure increase, which is strongly dependent upon the strain hardening exponent. Eventually, for a bearing ratio higher than 75%, a plastic locking stage occurs, which leads to an exponential increase of the mean contact pressure. Practical applications of this work to indentation and sealing research fields are discussed.

Abstract

International audience; The relevance of the phase-field approach to simulate the fracture in porous ceramics has been investigated. For this purpose, the conditions for the crack initiation using the phase-field model have been compared to the theoretical predictions of the coupled criterion considering a pure V-notch singularity and a crack blunted by a cavity. For two types of ceramics (3YSZ and 8YSZ), it has been shown that the phase-field approach is able to simulate accurately the crack nucleation as predicted by the coupled stress-energy criterion. The nature of the regularization parameter l for the phase-field model has been discussed as function of the material and the local geometry where the crack initiates. Moreover, the apparent fracture toughness and the compressive fracture strength have been calculated for real porous YSZ ceramics. It has been found that the fracture properties of these complex 3D porous materials can be correctly predicted with the phase-field model. For specimen loaded under compression, it has been shown that the model is able to capture and explain the transition from a brittle behavior towards a diffuse damage when increasing the porosity.

Abstract

International audience; An original 3D stochastic geometrical model has been developed to simulate the microstructural evolution of porous solid-oxide cell electrodes made of yttria-stabilized zirconia and nickel. The microstructural change induced by Ni agglomeration has been more specifically simulated. The model is based on random sets and algorithms for solving the linear assignment problem related to the time evolution of one component in the microstructure. The possibility to generate realistic 3D microstructures with the model has been verified by comparing the geometrical characteristics of synthetic microstructures with those extracted from real electrode reconstructions. The ability of the Stochastic Time Evolution Microstructure (STEM) model to generate microstructures with evolving characteristics has been then illustrated and compared to real data obtained on aged electrodes. The error on most of the geometrical characteristics are in general lower than 10%, except in some particular cases, such as the microstructure factor. All the results have then been discussed and suggestions have been proposed for improving the model.

Abstract

International audience; A comparison between experiment and numerical simulation of microwave heating of a parallelepipedic silicon carbide (SiC) sample is presented. Using a-2.45GHz single-mode cavity, the evolution of the surface temperature is first experimen-tally studied for different orientations of the sample. A finite element analysis of this electromagnetic-thermal coupled problem is then conducted with the COMSOL Multiphysics® software. Despite the different approximations of our model, a good agreement between experimental and numerical results is found, confirming that the heating of SiC depends only on the electric field. The effect of sample orientations and the cavity length on heating is also highlighted and analyzed.

Abstract

International audience; Over the past decades, constitutive relations have been developed to compute the mechanical response of silicate glasses at the continuum length scale. They are now reliable enough that we can calculate indentation induced stress and strain fields and examine the impact of material parameters on indentation response, and especially hardness, pileup and stress fields. In contrast to a presently widespread assumption in the literature, we show that (shear) flow stress is the primary determinant of these properties, and that densification plays a secondary role in the indentation response of all the silicate glasses. This result applies even for large values of the densification at saturation because of the high ratio between effective volumetric yield stress (i.e. yield pressure) and flow stress. It is well-known that, depending upon composition, silicate glasses exhibit very different sensitivities to indentation cracking, although all other standard mechanical properties remain quite similar. We point out that material damage incurred through plastic shear flow, and especially shear flow instability and localization may well control crack initiation, which would resolve the paradox. Shear flow instability and damage has not been quantitatively investigated in detail in silicate glasses as yet, neither experimentally nor theoretically. However , we believe it is key to an in depth understanding of cracking resistance in silicate glasses.

Abstract

International audience; The thermal decomposition of actinides oxalates greatly depends on the oxidation state of the cation, the gas involved and the physical characteristics of the precursor. In the actinides series, uranium(IV) oxalate U(C 2 O 4) 2 .6H 2 O can be viewed as a peculiar case, as its sensibility towards oxidation leads to a specific series of reactions when heating under oxygen atmosphere. In order to clarify the disagreements existing in the literature, particularly concerning potential carbonate intermediates and the possible transitory existence of UO 3 , we show here an extended characterization of the different intermediates through a combination of X-Ray diffraction, vibrational spectroscopies and X-Ray absorption near edge spectroscopy. In this frame, uranium oxidation was found to occur at low temperature (200°C) concomitantly to the onset of oxalate groups decomposition, leading to an amorphous oxo-oxalato compound. Pursuing the thermal conversion up to 350°C led to complete oxidation of U(IV) into U(VI), then to the formation of amorphous UO 3 still bearing adsorbed carbonates. The first pure oxide formed during the thermal conversion was further identified to sub-stoichiometric UO 3- after heating at 550°C. Finally, U 3 O 8 was obtained as the final stable phase after heating above 660°C. The mechanism of thermal conversion of uranium(IV) oxalate into oxide under oxygen is then driven by a complex interplay between redox reactions and decomposition of the organic fractions. Such chemical reactions were also found to significantly modify the morphology of the powder through HT-ESEM observations : decomposition led the size of the aggregates to reduce by 20% while uranium oxidation clearly promoted growth within the agglomerates. 2

Abstract

International audience; A novel particle-based model is proposed to generate synthetic yet representative 3D microstructures of typical SOC electrodes. The model steps can be related to the real electrode manufacturing routes, classically via powders processing, making it a practical tool for electrodes design optimization. The representativeness of the synthetic microstructures is checked on several two-phase (LSCF, LSC) and three-phase (Ni-YSZ) electrodes reconstructed by synchrotron X-ray and FIB-SEM tomography. The validation shows a very good agreement between the real and synthetic media in terms of metric, topological and physical properties. Furthermore, the model is adapted to simulate the microstructure of a typical Ni-YSZ current collecting layer by taking into account a bimodal pore-size-distribution. In this objective, the macro-pores resulting from the burning-off of specific pore-formers are morphologically separated in the reconstruction from the micro-porosity network. Finally, the geometrical features of the macro-pores are meticulously characterized and successfully emulated by using parametric ellipsoids.

The purpose of this study is to describe the experimental TGT data from healthy donors and hemophilia A (HA) and B (HB) patients. We derive a simplified ODE model and apply it to analyze the TGT data from healthy donors and HA/HB patients with in vitro added tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI) antibody. This model allows the characterization of hemophilia patients in the space of three most important model parameters. The proposed approach may provide a new quantitative tool for the analysis of experimental TGT. Also, it gives a reduced model of coagulation verified against clinical data to be used in future theoretical large-scale modeling of thrombosis in flow.

Abstract

International audience; The mechanisms of diffusion and segregation of carbon from a solid carbon-based film, through a nickel film catalyst, was investigated using in situ, time- and depth-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The graphene precursor was a carbon nitride amorphous film obtained by pulse laser deposition. Changes in both surface and bulk sensitive carbon components versus annealing time was investigated at temperatures between 200 °C and 500 °C. A model of carbon diffusion/segregation through the nickel film was implemented, enabling the quantitative description of the graphene growth. Carbon diffusion through the nickel film was shown to occur at low temperatures (200–300 °C) and to induce the growth of graphene domains. The fine microstructure and high density of defects in the nickel catalyst film accelerated the transport of carbon, faster than conventional bulk diffusion. At 500 °C, bulk diffusion of carbon occurred, due to the recovering of the nickel grain microstructure. The diffusion/segregation model developed in this study can be used as a support to a better control of the growth and quality of the graphene. Our interpretations are discussed in relation to similar approaches related to graphene growth by chemical vapor deposition.

Abstract

The well-known mechanisms of interaction between precipitates and dislocations are shearing (for shearable precipitates) and bypassing mechanisms (for nonshearable precipitates). The transition from shearable to nonshearable precipitates in precipitation hardening alloys leads to changes of dislocation motion mode and dislocation multiplication behavior, which inevitably causes different PLC behaviors. In this study, we systematically investigate the influence of shearable and nonshearable Al3(Sc, Zr) precipitates on PLC behaviors by experimental characterization for precipitation hardening AlMgScZr alloys. We analyze the onset strain, critical strain-rate range, serration amplitude, and propagation behavior of PLC bands in detail for AlMgScZr alloys with shearable and nonshearable precipitates, respectively. We find that the transition from shearable to nonshearable precipitates changes the PLC band propagation behavior, decreases the magnitude of serration amplitude, expands the strain-rate range as well as decreases the critical strain rate between normal behavior (the critical strain increases with the increase of strain rate) and inverse behavior (the critical strain decreases with the increase of strain rate) regimes due to the different dislocation-precipitate interactions. Besides, the transition from shearable to nonshearable precipitates increases the onset strain at normal behavior while decreases the onset strain at inverse behavior depending on the different roles of precipitates in the solute-dislocation interaction. Finally, we reveal the nature of influence of different dislocation-precipitate interactions on PLC behavior considering different strengthening mechanisms based on quantitative characterization on precipitates and dislocation density.

Abstract

International audience; The main route of silica powder production is the precipitation from sodium silicate solution in the 8–10 pH range. It was earlier established that the oligomerization of the silicate species is an important stage in silica nucleation. We performed Molecular Dynamics simulations of unsteady silicate solutions at T > 1000 K to overcome the difficulties encountered in oligomerization experiments (e.g. reliability of the obtained kinetic data). We studied the dynamics of oligomerization for various basic pH, temperature, and silicate concentration values. Based on the Becker–Döring theory of nucleation we now propose a simple reaction mechanism and a quantitative model explaining the evolution of the smaller oligomers concentration with time. The model requires fitting two physical parameters: the kinetic constants of oligomerization and hydrolysis; they depend on the temperature, but not on the size of the oligomer reacting with the monomer. Using the Arrhenius law, we deduce the activation energies for condensation and hydrolysis; we show that the pre-exponential term in the oligomerization rate follows Smoluchowski’s theory for Brownian aggregation. Applying the model to the silicate oligomerization at room temperature, we show that our model agrees with previously published modeling based on energetics considerations. The role of the counter-ions is also confirmed.

Abstract

International audience; In situ straining experiments were performed in a TEM on an equimolar CoCrFeMnNi (Cantor) high entropy alloy at room and cryogenic temperature. Perfect and partial dislocation activity were recorded in both cases. Twinning directly follows the development of partial dislocation shearing that has various origins (perfect dislocation splitting, anchoring). It is shown that, although twinning is more frequently observed at liquid nitrogen temperature, its prevalence depends mainly on crystal orientation. As a result, twinning and perfect dislocation plasticity are likely to occur jointly in random oriented polycrystals, even at early stages of deformation.

Abstract

International audience; During a fire in an industrial facility, the main consequences concerning aerosol are the production of large amount of soot and potential resuspension of hazardous material in particulate form. Soot deposition quantification on walls in a room during a fire is essential for the prediction of aerosol quantities that can be transported in the ventilation ducts and clog high efficiency particulate air filters.For this purpose, accumulative resistive sensors, initially developed for monitoring Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF), have been used to quantify soot particles that are deposited on its sensing side. After validation of the fabrication process via electrical measurements, the sensor response has been studied under different polarization voltages and an experimental protocol for soot quantification has been qualified.Thanks to those protocols, it was first demonstrated that the polarization voltage has no influence on the deposition velocity. Then, the resistive sensor was calibrated at polarization voltages of 10 V and 0.1 V. For 0.1 V, results are less repeatable and do not allow to propose a correlation between conductance and deposited mass. Better repeatability was found for a polarization voltage of 10 V allowing to propose and develop a calibration procedure aiming to correlate sensor conductance and deposited mass of aerosol. Indeed, it was proved that the sensor has a blind zone, in terms of conductance, for mass deposit ranging from 0 to 230 mg/m2. A linear calibration curve with a good sensitivity of 2.49 µS.mg-1.m2 was obtained for deposited mass between 230 and 1630 mg/m2.

Abstract

A study of microwave sintering of uranium dioxide pellets has been performed with the aim to densify the material. Microwave sintering heating has been carried out in a 2.45 GHz multimode cavity, designed to fit the different requirements linked to sintering of nuclear ceramics. Hybrid and direct microwave heating (i.e., with and without susceptor) conditions were carried out. In the hybrid condition, thermal cycles at temperatures up to 1700°C, with a heating rate of 20 °C/min and dwell times of 10–60 min could be applied to the samples. The sintered specimens exhibited high values of densities (92.6–94.6% of theoretical density) with a grain size range of 9.1–11.8 μm, which is close to the results obtained with conventional sintering with longer thermal cycles. The pellet tested in the direct configuration only heated until 950°C, showing the impossibility to heat UO2 in a microwave furnace without the help of a susceptor.

Abstract

International audience; In this pioneering work, an assessment of thermal runaway probability based on simplified chemical kinetics has been performed with imprecise Bayesian methods relying on several priors. The physical phenomenon is governed by two chemical kinetic parameters A and Ea. We suppose that their values are considerably uncertain but also that we know the experimental profiles of a chemical species corresponding to their true values, thereby allowing us to compute likelihoods and posteriors corresponding to different levels of information. We are interested in the critical delay time tc beyond which an explosion will certainly occur. The use of several priors allows us to see when the data truly dominate the prior with respect to the probability distribution of tc. It does not appear possible to do so in an orthodox precise Bayesian framework that reduces all forms of uncertainty to a single probability distribution.

Abstract

VIRTUAL CONFERENCE - Section: Fluids and Particles; International audience; Granular matter transported by hydraulic conveying behaves under several transport regimes. Thetechncal challenge is to predict the dilute or dense regime of transport as well as the pressure drop requiredin order to design properly a granular hydraulic conveying system. We address this problem with a laboratoryscale experimental setup able to reproduce the key features of hydraulic conveying of grains. Pressure dropmeasurements as well as image analysis have been used to characterize a slug transport regime and its crossovertowards a moving bed transport regime. A dimensionless characteristic curves diagram has been established anda reasonably good pressure drop prediction with a generic power law is explained in details. This preliminarywork has the potential to open perspectives for the design of a predictive tool for pressure drops in hydraulicconveying systems.

Abstract

International audience; In the present study, Au-V2O5 sensing material was tested as a sensing electrode for developing mixed-potential ammonia gas sensors. The results of gas sensing measurements indicated selective responses to NH3 while this selectivity was highly dependent on the temperature. Different V2O5 contents were tested in the sensing electrode. The results showed that by increasing V2O5 content from 15 wt.% to 50 wt.%, selective ammonia sensors could be achieved at 550 °C. The selectivity of Au-50%V2O5 sensor was also confirmed in gas mixtures of CO, NH3, NO, and NO2 gases. Modeling of the sensor responses in the ammonia concentration range 2-40 ppm at four oxygen concentrations was performed based on mixed-potential theory. Nernst and Butler-Volmer equations with an electron transfer assumption were used for data modeling.

Abstract

This paper describes the development of an innovative instrumented and automated 2.45GHz multimode microwave cavity for sintering of uranium oxide based nuclear fuels (UO2, (U,Pu)O2, (U,Am)O2 …). The cavity and the sintering cell were designed using Finite Element simulation and the expertise acquired over years on microwave heating. This original setup allows for hybrid and homogeneous heating of nuclear fuels. Reliable in situ monitoring of the samples' shrinkage and temperature is performed with an optical dilatometer and infrared pyrometers calibrated with a specific protocol. A dedicated software including a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller was developed to precisely control the sintering cycles like under conventional heating. The setup is also designed for operating in a glovebox under reducing sintering atmosphere. A stable and homogeneous heating with controlled sintering cycles is reached to successfully sinter UO2 crack free pellets to high density. This is a key point of innovation compared to previous studies in the literature on microwave sintering of nuclear ceramics. The pellets' final densities are equivalent to those obtained under conventional sintering, but with a significant decrease in the total duration of the sintering cycle.

Abstract

The effect of a counter-current gas flow on the linear stability of an inclined falling liquid film switches from destabilizing to stabilizing, as the flow confinement is increased. We confront this linear effect with the response of nonlinear surface waves resulting from long-wave interfacial instability. For the strongest confinement studied, the gas flow damps both the linear growth rate and the amplitude of nonlinear travelling waves, and this holds for waves of the most-amplified frequency and for low-frequency solitary waves. In the latter case, waves are shaped into elongated humps with a flat top that resist secondary instabilities. For intermediate confinement, the linear and nonlinear responses are opposed and can be non-monotonic. The linear growth rate of the most-amplified waves first decreases and then increases as the gas velocity is increased, whereas their nonlinear amplitude is first amplified and then damped. Conversely, solitary waves are amplified linearly but damped nonlinearly. For the weakest confinement, solitary waves are prone to two secondary instability modes that are not observed in unconfined falling films. The first involves waves of diminishing amplitude slipstreaming towards their growing leading neighbours. The second causes wave splitting events that lead to a train of smaller, shorter waves.
