Abstract: International audience; The magnetic properties of two types of poly[(3-methoxy)4,6-toluene] (P3mt1 and P3mt2) are studied before and after doping with iodine or organic acids (CF3COOH or CH3SO3H) in a range of temperature varying from 110 to 460 K. Under 250K and independent of the state, the magnetic susceptibility χ obeys Curie law dependence. Up to this temperature, χ is governed by a Pauli law contribution. This fact can be related to localized or delocalized spin. Furthermore, iodine doping induces distortion in the polymers that affects the ESR line distribution. In the case of organic acids doping process, a hyperfine structure with hyperfine coupling constant values between 2.2 and 2.8G is observed. As the spin concentration decreases, we deduce that in the case of P3mt2, there is a de-doping process.

Abstract: International audience; P3mt1 and P3mt2 were electrochemically synthesized using two different electrolyte supports H2SO4 and TEABF4, respectively. First, it was deduced from density functional theory (DFT) calculations that the electronic and steric effects govern polymerization mechanism of the radical monomers. Second, DFT combined with experimental spectroscopic analyses (ESR, Infrared, Raman, and 13C NMR) demonstrate that H2SO4 or TEABF4 could generate a homogenous or heterogeneous coupling site, respectively

Abstract: Syntheses performed in the A 3 B/MSe 2 systems lead to the formation of (B/B')(M/A) 5 Se 9 phases (ferromagnets or superconductors) {A=M= (Nb, V, Ta); B=B'= (Al, Ge, Ga, Sn, Sb)}. The magnetic studies on GaV 5 Se 9 , GaV 0.15 Ta 4.85 Se 9 and Sn 0.94 Ga 0.05 V 0.30 Nb 4.70 Se 9 , compared to that of SnNb 5 Se 9 , GaNb 5 Se 9 show that the presence of V modifies the superconducting exchanges and allows ferromagnetic couplings. Through Point-Contact Spectroscopy on SnNb 5 Se 9 , it is shown that nanoclusters of the pristine NbSe 2 and Nb 3 Sn exist, so the properties result from a synergy between them and the matrix, and it could be a mesoscopic superconductor. The superconductors' s T c values vary from 17.5(2) K for SnNb 5 Se 9 to 6.0(2) K for SbNb 5 Se 9 , and the ferromagnetic state transition from 22K for GaV 5 Se 9 , to 35 K for Sn 0.94 Ga 0.05 V 0.30 Nb 4.70 Se 9 . The 119 Sn and 121 Sb Mossbauer studies of Sn 0.94 Ga 0.05 V 0.30 Nb 4.70 Se 9 and SbNb 5 Se 9 are compared to that obtained for SnNb 5 Se 9 itself; for this last one, 3 types of sites corresponding to 2 species of Sn were observed with a reversible dynamic process between the 2 SnII Sn-Se sites correlated to a modification of the Sn-Nb site(1). SbNb 5 Se 9 , at 5 K, shows just a singlet, attributed to Sb surrounded by Se ; from 298 K to 5 K, Sn 0.94 Ga 0.05 V 0.30 Nb 4.70 Se 9 , presents one asymmetrical Sn-Se site without any transferred field on Sn and an increased asymmetry when T decreases. Sn 0.94 Ga 0.05 V 0.30 Nb 4.70 Se 9 is a weak and complicated ferromagnet. In both cases, GaV 5 Se 9 , and Sn 0.94 Ga 0.05 V 0.30 Nb 4.70 Se 9 , the ESR spectrum observed at 300 K can be fitted with 2 lorentzian distributions: for the first case, with axial symmetries, for the second only one remains with an axial symmetry, belonging to the V sites. its vanadium sites are thus less symmetrical than in the first case.

Abstract: Maximizing the electrochemical performance of 3D micro-supercapacitors based on pseudocapacitive films is crucial for powering the next generation of miniaturized IoT devices. The films have to be nanostructured, must conform the 3D template, and have uniform deposition. To study the growth mechanism of nanostructured MnO2 films obtained by a pulsed electrodeposition method, in situ Atomic Force Microscopy methods operating in liquid mode, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and electrochemical characterization techniques were used. The impact of ON and OFF times during the pulsed electrodeposition process was investigated. The deposition mechanism in Volmer Weber Island growth mode provided some guidelines to tune the deposit morphology to enhance the electrochemical performance of the 3D electrode based on nanostructured MnO2 films.

Abstract: International audience; Five new highly photochromic hybrid organic-inorganic materials were successfully prepared by supramolecular assembly of normal (1+) and mixed (2+) cationic dithienylethenes (DTEs) and polyoxometalates (POMs) units. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that (1)3[PM12O40]∙5ACN (M = W, Mo) (1-PW12 and 1-PMo12) and (2)3[PM12O40]∙5ACN (M = W, Mo) (2-PW12 and 2-PMo12) are isostructural, while (2)4[Mo8O26]4DMF (2-Mo8) is an isotype of (1)4[Mo8O26]4DMF (1-Mo8) i.e., the first POM-DTE ionic assembly, recently reported. The solid-state photochromic properties of these materials at room temperature are highly tunable with the nature of the DTEs and POMs used, which has been interpreted taking into account steric and electronic factors. Especially, while 1-PMo12 and 2-PMo12 exhibit negligible photoresponses which have not been considered herein, thorough investigations of the photocoloration and fading kinetics in ambient conditions have highlighted the precise impact of both organic and inorganic components on the photoswitching abilities of 1-Mo8, 2-Mo8, 1-PW12 and 2-PW12. Upon UV-light irradiation, the absorption of the normal and mixed DTEs in their closed-ring form exhibits a hypsochromic shift which is more pronounced in hybrid systems integrating -[Mo8O26]4- rather than -[PW12O40]3-, due to the higher negative charge density of the octamolybdate unit. The photocyclization rates of DTEs are also systematically increased when combined with the -[Mo8O26]4- unit, while in contrast, their back cycloreversion rates are not affected whatever the nature of the POMs used. In addition, within isostructural series, hybrids integrating mixed DTEs exhibit faster fading processes than their normal DTE counterparts when exposed to visible light. Finally, among this new series, 2-Mo8 shows the best photochromic performances with a fast photocoloration rate associated with a high coloration contrast, a fast and complete fading process and a high cyclability.

Abstract: Since the beginnings of the electronic age, a quest for ever faster and smaller switches has been initiated, since this element is ubiquitous and foundational in any electronic circuit to regulate the flow of current. Mott insulators are promising candidates to meet this need as they undergo extremely fast resistive switching under electric field. However the mechanism of this transition is still under debate. Our spatially-resolved {\mu}-XRD imaging experiments carried out on the prototypal Mott insulator (V0.95Cr0.05)2O3 show that the resistive switching is associated with the creation of a conducting filamentary path consisting in an isostructural compressed phase without any chemical nor symmetry change. This clearly evidences that the resistive switching mechanism is inherited from the bandwidth-controlled Mott transition. Abstract: A color-tunable phosphor Li2SrSiO4:Eu2+,Eu3+,Ce3+ (LSSO:Eu2+,Eu3+,Ce3+) was synthesized by solid state reaction in reducing atmosphere followed by a controlled heating in air at different temperatures. Due to the different sensitivities to oxidation of the Eu2+ and Ce3+ ions, the emission centers Eu2+/Eu3+/Ce3+ can coexist in the Li2SrSiO4 host and enable a tunable coloration of the “blue-yellow-red” photoemission. By controling the energy transfer between the different activators, a single phase white phosphor was obtained.

Abstract: International audience; Several new materials with four structure-types (e.g., Cu0.32In1.74Ga0.84S4 (CIGS4), Cu0.65In1.75Ga1.4S5 (CIGS5), Cu1.44In2.77Ga0.76S6 (CIGS6), and Cu1.1In2.49Ga1.8S7 (CIGS7)) have been evidenced in the Cu2S–In2S3–Ga2S3 pseudo-ternary system. All of them present a 2D structure built upon infinite 2/∞[InS2] layers ((InS6) octahedra sharing edges) on which condense on both sides mono-, bi-, or tri-2/∞[MS] layers ((MS4) tetrahedra (M = Cu, In, Ga) sharing corners). (M(Td))n−2(In(Oh))Sn slabs are separated from each other by a van der Waals gap, and subscript n refers to the number of sulfur layers within the building block. These compounds have the propensity to display stacking faults but also polymorphic forms. Their optical gap (ca. 1.7 eV) is quite similar to the one of the Cu(In0.7Ga0.3)S2 chalcopyrite absorbers used in tandem solar cells, and the major charge carriers are holes. This suggests that they might be very attractive for photovoltaic applications in thin film devices but also for photocatalysis.

Abstract: International audience; Two samples of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs), one with well-graphitized nanotube walls and another containing oxygen at outer nanotube surfaces, were fluorinated at room temperature using gaseous BrF3. The products were comprehensively studied using transmission electron microscopy, Raman scattering, X-ray photoelectron, and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopies. The experimental data found twice the concentration of sidewall fluorine in the oxygenated DWCNTs. Quantum chemical modeling supported the experimental results revealing the preferable development of CF areas near the carbon atoms bonded with oxygen-containing groups. This observation demonstrates that tuning of the physical and chemical properties of carbon nanotubes can be achieved via the controlled co-modification by fluorine and oxygen functional groups.

Abstract: International audience; Bromination of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) was carried out using a saturated vapor of Br2 at room temperature with or without a pretreatment in bromine water. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that ultrasound pretreatment modified the chemical state of bromine in the product. The binding energies of the Br 3d electrons in the pre-sonicated DWCNT sample were between those characteristic of the covalent C–Br bonds and the negatively charged Br2 molecules, observed when the pretreatment was not performed. Raman spectroscopy, however, clearly evidenced Br–Br vibrations in both brominated samples. Calculations of CNT–Br2 models within density functional theory were used to propose that the electronic state of a Br2 molecule depends on the adsorption site. The bromine molecules prefer to be located near edge hydroxyl groups, which acept the electron density from Br2. This increases the binding energy of Br 3d levels as compared to that for Br2 molecules in other adsorption sites.

Abstract: International audience; Despite decades of study the precise behavior of bromine in graphitic carbons remains unclear. In this report, using Raman spectroscopy, we reveal two types of bromine structure in graphitic carbon materials. Between fluorinated graphene layers with a composition close to C2F, Br2 molecules are intercalated in a form similar to liquid bromine. Bromination of pristine and low-fluorinated graphitic carbons behaves very differently with distinct Br-related Raman spectra. With the guidance of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, all Raman features are assigned to normal vibration modes of specific bromine species over graphene and fluorinated graphene. When intercalated between extended non-fluorinated sp2-hybridized carbon regions, physisorbed Br2 molecules move freely across the non-functionalized region toward the CF border. Multiple Br2 molecules then combine spontaneously into Br3-based chains, whose coupling activates otherwise Raman inactive modes. Significant charge transfer to bromine species occurs in this case. DFT calculated frequencies match precisely the experimental Br-related Raman bands observed in the intercalation carbon compounds. The fluorine-catalyzed bromine chain-formation process shown here is general and should also operate with edges and other defect species.

Abstract: International audience; Highly dispersed crystalline/amorphous LiFePO4 (LFP) nanoparticles encapsulated within hollow-structured graphitic carbon were synthesized using an in situ ultracentrifugation process. Ultracentrifugation triggered an in situ sol–gel reaction that led to the formation of core–shell LFP simultaneously hybridized with fractured graphitic carbon. The structure has double cores that contain a crystalline LFP (core 1) covered by an amorphous LFP containing Fe3+ defects (core 2), which are encapsulated by graphitic carbon (shell). These core–shell LFP nanocomposites show improved Li+ diffusivity thanks to the presence of an amorphous LFP phase. This material enables ultrafast discharge rates (60 mA h g-1 at 100C and 36 mA h g-1 at 300C) as well as ultrafast charge rates (60 mA h g-1 at 100C and 36 mA h g-1 at 300C). The synthesized core–shell nanocomposites overcome the inherent one-dimensional diffusion limitation in LFP and yet deliver/store high electrochemical capacity in both ways symmetrically up to 480C. Such a high rate symmetric capacity for both charge and discharge has never been reported so far for LFP cathode materials. This offers new opportunities for designing high-energy and high-power hybrid supercapacitors.

Abstract: International audience; Hybrid structures combing silver nanoparticles and few-layer graphene have been synthetized by combining low-energy ion beam synthesis and stencil techniques. A single plane of metallic nanoparticles plays the role of an embedded plasmonic enhancer located in dedicated areas at a controlled nanometer distance from deposited graphene layers. Optical imaging, reflectance and Raman scattering mapping are used to measure the enhancement of electronic and vibrational properties of these layers. In particular electronic Raman scattering is shown as notably efficient to analyze the optical transfer of charge carriers between the systems and the presence of intrinsic and extrinsic defects.

Abstract: International audience; Vanadium nitride (VN) was deposited by DC-sputtering on a vertically aligned carbon nanotube (CNTs) template for the purpose of nano-structuration. This led to the fabrication of hierarchically composite electrodes consisting of porous and nanostructured VN grown on vertically aligned CNTs in a nano-tree-like configuration for micro-supercapacitor application. The electrodes show excellent performance with an areal capacitance as high as 37.5 mF cm−2 at a scan rate of 2 mV s−1 in a 0.5 M K2SO4 mild electrolyte solution. Furthermore, the capacitance decay was only 15% after 20,000 consecutive cycles. Moreover, the capacitance was found to increase with VN deposit thickness. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses of the electrodes before and after cycling suggest that the oxide layers that form at the VN surface is the responsible for the redox energy storage in this material. Such electrodes can compete with other transition metal nitride based electrodes for micro-supercapacitors. © 2017

Abstract: International audience; Although recent studies in the field of nanomaterials have allowed the realization of highly sensitive sensors, research regarding new types of functionalization of nanostructures to reach high selectivity are still missing. Here, a simple electronic device based on polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) nanoribbons used for lead detection is presented. This device is functionalized by reduction of aryl diazonium salts in order to detect heavy metals. The effectiveness of the grafting process and thickness homogeneity of the coating layer were evaluated by XPS and NanoSIMS techniques. The preconcentration of lead (Pb2+) at the surface of the functionalized nanostructures was substantially verified. Finally, electrical characterization of the resistors based on the functionalized nanoribbons, showed that the sensitivity to these species is increased in the concentration ranging from 10−7 to 10−5 mol L−1. This technique could pave the way for use of complexing agents to enhance heavy metal detection. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract: International audience; The effect of surface chemistry of reactive sputtered TiN electrodes in the electrochemical capacitors (ECs) was investigated. The TiN films were produced on vertically aligned carbon nanotubes. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed surface defects generation with no effect on morphology. Cyclic voltammetry experiments were performed in aqueous 0.5 M K2SO4 solution and 1 M Et4NBF4 ((tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate)) organic electrolyte. The presence of oxygen vacancies and Ti interstitials on the top surface layer lead to enhanced electrochemical capacitive charge storage. Such findings open the way to design nitride films with optimized surface chemistry for use in the ECs. © 2018

Abstract: International audience; Oxides derived from the ReO3 structure, such as bronzes or Wadsley-Roth phases, have re-emerged from the past as they offer very attractive properties as negative electrodes for high-power Li-ion batteries. Here, we revisit the hexagonal bronze Cs0.5Nb2.5W2.5O14 and its protonated H0.25Cs0.25Nb2.5W2.5O14 derivative, which was newly obtained after ion exchange. A panel of characterization techniques (HAADF-STEM imaging, EDX mapping, and XRD) revealed a specific cation ordering in the material and a preferential ion exchange in the heptagonal tunnels of this oxide. When used as Li-ion battery electrodes, H0.25Cs0.25Nb2.5W2.5O14 exhibits higher specific capacities as well as better capacity retention at high currents than Cs0.5Nb2.5W2.5O14. The protonated phase provides specific capacities of 132 and 111 mAh center dot g-1 at, respectively, 0.02 and 0.2 A center dot g-1. Kinetic analysis reveals that the good capacity at a high rate is due to favorable diffusion of lithium ions into the tunnels of H0.25Cs0.25Nb2.5W2.5O14. In addition, using in situ XRD, a solid solution mechanism occurring during lithium insertion was proposed, as well as the different lithiation sites of the material.

Abstract: As our understanding of the physiopathology of intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration has improved, novel therapeutic strategies have emerged, based on the local injection of cells, bioactive molecules, and nucleic acids. However, with regard to the harsh environment constituted by degenerated IVDs, protecting biologics from in situ degradation while allowing their long-term delivery is a major challenge. Yet, the design of the optimal approach for IVD regeneration is still under debate and only a few papers provide a critical assessment of IVD-specific carriers for local and sustained delivery of biologics. In this review, we highlight the IVD-relevant polymers as well as their design as macro-, micro-, and nano-sized particles to promote endogenous repair. Finally, we illustrate how multiscale systems, combining in situ-forming hydrogels with ready-to-use particles, might drive IVD regenerative medicine strategies toward innovation.

Abstract: Eating titanium dioxide, an approved food color additive (E171), has raised some concerns, mainly due to its content in nanoparticles (NPs). To understand how it is handled in the gastro-intestinal tract, we analyzed the behavior of food grade TiO2 (~20% NPs, 120 nm) and P25 TiO2 NPs (~100% NPs, 25 nm) in digestive fluids through a standardized static in vitro digestion protocol. After each step of digestion (i.e. saliva, gastric and intestinal step), the size of the particles and the surface charge changes were characterized using laser particle size distribution analysis and zeta potential measurements and compared to the values obtained for control digestion (without the digestion enzymes). Both food grade and P25 particles strongly agglomerate in digestive fluids due to the presence of salts and proteins. The largest agglomerates were formed in the intestinal fluid, with diameters up to several ten hundreds of micrometers. The nature of adsorbed proteins was determined by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) after separation from particles. All TiO2 samples interacted with alpha-amylase and only one sample with pepsin. Finally, E171 (~20% NPs) and P25 TiO2 (100% NPs) do not appear to exist as nanometric entities all along the steps of the in vitro digestion protocol, which constitutes good news considering the concerns about the effects of ingested nano-products. However, these large agglomerates may be transformed in contact with the epithelium; moreover the adsorption of enzymes may have a major impact on the digestion process. Both issues are currently under investigation.

Abstract: International audience; Drug delivery systems are proposed for the in situ controlled delivery of therapeutic molecules in the scope of tissue engineering. We propose herein silica nanofibers as carriers for the loading and release of bioactive proteins. The influence of pH, time and concentration on the amount of adsorbed proteins was studied. The interactions allowing loading were then studied by means of electron microscopy, zeta potential measurements, electron energy loss spectroscopy and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared analysis. Release profiles were determined and biological activities were enzymatically assessed. The first part of the work was carried out with lysozyme as a model protein, and then bioactive growth factors TGF-b1 and GDF-5 were used because their significance in human adipose stromal cell differentiation towards intervertebral disc nucleopulpocytes was previously assessed. It is demonstrated that protein–silica nanofiber interactions are mainly driven by hydrogen bonds and local electrostatic interactions. The present data thus provide a better understanding of the adsorption phenomenon involved, as well as a method to control protein adsorption and release. It is worth pointing out that the kinetic release of growth factors, up to 28 days, and their biological activity maintenance seem to be compatible with intervertebral disc regenerative medicine.

Abstract: Double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) are fluorinated using (1) fluorine F2 at 200 °C, (2) gaseous BrF3 at room temperature, and (3) CF4 radio-frequency plasma functionalization. These have been comparatively studied using transmission electron microscopy and infrared, Raman, X-ray photoelectron, and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. A formation of covalent C–F bonds and a considerable reduction in the intensity of radial breathing modes from the outer shells of DWCNTs are observed for all samples. Differences in the electronic state of fluorine and the C–F vibrations for three kinds of the fluorinated DWCNTs are attributed to distinct local surroundings of the attached fluorine atoms. Possible fluorine patterns realized through a certain fluorination technique are revealed from comparison of experimental NEXAFS F K-edge spectra with quantum-chemical calculations of various models. It is proposed that fluorination with F2 and BrF3 produces small fully fluorinated areas and short fluorinated chains, respectively, while the treatment with CF4 plasma results in various attached species, including single or paired fluorine atoms and –CF3 groups. Abstract: International audience; This contribution aims to define an analysis procedure for abnormal deposits in human tissues starting from in vivo characterization, down to the nanoscale using major instrumentation. Such an integrated approach is based on recent literature, but particularly on our research over the last twenty years on pathological calcifications. To this end, we begin by describing four successive analytical steps, on the injury site or physician’s surgery, at the hospital, at a typical physicochemical laboratory, and finally at a large scale (possibly multinational) facility. For the first step, we present various techniques which can be implemented on portable instruments. For the second step, commercial analytical setups are used. In a physicochemical laboratory, prototype or commercial setups are used and finally on large scale instruments, characterization techniques with better spatial resolution and/or higher sensitivity or techniques specific to synchrotron radiation are employed.

Abstract: International audience; A Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH) compound LDH ([Mg 2 Al(OH) 6 ] + x 2 H 2 O) intercalated with a redox active organic anion, Anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS), has been envisioned as an electrode material for high power aqueous based battery. The purpose is to use this interlayer redox active molecule for the enhancement of the specific capacity at the LDH composite electrode, which should allow fast charge transfer at the negative electrode for high power storage applications. This is achieved by the reduction of AQS in charge and oxidation in discharge within a redox inactive LDH matrix. The first charge of this new material [Mg 2 Al(OH) 6 ] + [AQSO 3 ] − x 2 H 2 O leads to a capacity of 100 mAh g −1 at − 0.78 V vs Ag/AgCl (based on the weight of the active material) when operated in aqueous 1 M sodium acetate electrolyte. However, low cycling stability was observed, since a drastic loss in specific capacity occurs after the first charge. This study focuses at elucidating the mechanism behind this phenomenon via in situ UV/vis experiments. Subsequently, the dissolution of charged AQS anions into the electrolyte during the first charge of the anode has been identified and quantified. Such understanding of fading mechanism might lead to the design of improved LDH-based electrodes, which utilize redox active anions working in the positive potential range with enhanced cycling ability.

Abstract: International audience; In this work, exhaustive characterizations of 3D geometries of LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 (NMC), LiFePO4 (LFP), and NMC/LFP blended electrodes are undertaken for rational interpretation of their measured electrical properties and electrochemical performance. X-Ray tomography and Focused Ion Beam in combination with Scanning Electron Microscopy (FIB-SEM) tomography are used for a multiscale analysis of electrodes 3D geometries. Their multiscale electrical properties are measured by using Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BDS). Finally, discharge rate performance are measured and analyzed by simple, yet efficient methods. It allows discriminating between electronic and ionic wirings as the performance limiting factors, depending on the discharge rate. This approach allows a unique exhaustive analysis of the experimental relationships between the electrochemical behavior, the transport properties within the electrode and its 3D geometry.

Abstract: International audience; The development of instruments combining multiple characterization and imaging tools drove huge advances in material science, engineering, biology, and other related fields. Notably, the coupling of SEM with microRaman spectrometry (mu Raman) provides the means for the correlation between structural and physicochemical properties at the surface, while dual focused ion beam (FIB)-scanning electron microscopes (SEMs) operating under cryogenic conditions (cryo-FIB-SEM) allow for the analysis of the ultrastructure of materials in situ and in their native environment. In cryo-FIB-SEM, rapid and efficient methods for assessing vitrification conditions in situ are required for the accurate investigation of the original structure of hydrated samples. This work reports for the first time the use of a cryo-FIB-SEM-mu Raman instrument to efficiently assess the accuracy of cryo-fixation methods. Analyses were performed on plunge-freezed highly hydrated calcium phosphate cement (CPC) and a gelatin composite. By making a trench of a defined thickness with FIB, mu Raman analyses were carried out at a specific depth within the frozen material. Results show that the mu Raman signal is sensitive to the changes in the molecular structures of the aqueous phase and can be used to examine the depth of vitreous ice in frozen samples. The method presented in this work provides a reliable way to avoid imaging artifacts in cryo-FIB-SEM that are related to cryo-fixation and therefore constitutes great interest in the study of vitreous materials exhibiting high water content, regardless of the sample preparation method (i.e., by HPF, plunge freezing, and so on).

Abstract: The straightforward synthesis of a new donor-stabilized phosphenium ligand 3d by addition of bromodifurylphosphine to 1,3-dimethylimidazolium-2-carboxylate 1 is described. The obtained ligand exhibits a very strong π-acceptor character, comparable to that of triphenyl phosphite [P(OPh) 3 ] or of tris-halogenophosphines, with a v CO (A 1 ) at 2087 cm ―1 for its nickel tricarbonyl complex. This ligand, as well as the related 3a which was obtained from chlorodiphenylphosphine, were tested in palladium-catalyzed aryl alkynylation and in the platinum-catalyzed selective hydrogenation of chloronitrobenzenes, both in an ionic liquid phase. In C―C bond cross-coupling we observed that the increase of the π-acceptor character in ligand 3d, due to the introduction of an additional electron-withdrawing group, provides a very efficient catalyst in the alkynylation reaction of aryl bromides with phenylacetylene, including the deactivated 4-bromoanisole or the sterically hindered 2-bromonaphthalene. The catalytic activity decreases with recycling due to the sensitiveness of ligands to protonation in the ionic phase. Conversely, a multiple recycling of the metal/ligand system in non-acidic media was achieved from platinum-catalyzed hydrogenation of m-chloronitrobenzene. The catalytic results obtained by employing the complex of platinum(II) chloride with 3a [trans-PtCl 2 (3a) 2 ] in comparison with the non-ionic related trans-tris(triphenylphosphine)platinum dichloride [trans-PtCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 2 ] complex clearly indicate that the simultaneous existence of a strong π-acceptor character and a positive charge within the ligand 3a significantly increases the life-time of the platinum catalyst. The selectivity of the reaction is also improved by decreasing the undesirable formation of dehalogenation products. This cationic platinum complex trans-PtCl 2 (3a) 2 is the first example of a highly selective catalyst for hydrogenation of chloronitroarenes immobilized in an ionic liquid phase. The system was recycled six times without noticeable metal leaching in the organic phase, and no loss of activity.

Abstract: International audience; Au fur et à mesure du développement des différentes architectures de cellules photovoltaïques, la passivation du silicium s’est révélée être une amélioration clé des performances[1]. Dans les années 2010, l’évolution des recherches amène les dispositifs constitués de couches minces. On observe alors une diminution des efficacités avec la diminution des épaisseurs (< 200 microns)[1]. Les rapports surface sur volume pour du silicium cristallin sont désormais tels que les recombinaisons des porteurs de charge en surface avant et arrière deviennent limitantes avec une forte diminution des durées de vie des porteurs. Après avoir fait un tour d’horizon des matériaux étudiés et utilisés pour la passivation du silicium, on présentera les diverses propriétés du nitrure d’aluminium. L’AlN est en effet un excellent candidat. Son gap indirect implique d’une part des recombinaisons radiatives très rares. D’autre part, sa conductivité thermique proche de celle du cuivre pourrait favoriser les évacuations de chaleur. Il faut rappeler que l’échauffement des dispositifs est un facteur important de dégradation des performances. Non seulement les fortes températures dégradent les efficacités solaires des modules mais elles détériorent aussi les caractéristiques des éléments polymères des dispositifs[2]. Pour tenter d’y remédier, les matériaux d’encapsulation (dits ‘’packaging’’) doivent ainsi être capables d’évacuer au plus vite la chaleur. Lors de l’exposé, plusieurs variétés de microstructures AlN/AlNO accessibles grâce à la pulvérisation cathodique magnétron seront présentées [3]. Abstract: The present article discusses the investigation of CuIn Ga S (CIGS) thin films for photovoltaic applications. For decades, a Cu-rich composition has been used to create solar cells with efficiencies of up to 13.5%; however, interest in chalcopyrite sulfide has recently been revived due to its high and adjustable bandgap, making it a serious candidate as a top cell in tandem configurations. Although chalcopyrite selenides share many properties with CIGS thin films, crucial differences have been reported. To further understand these materials, we studied more than 500 samples of absorbers and resulting solar cells. First, we found that the compositional window for obtaining single-phase CIGS thin films with a 3-stage co-evaporation process is very narrow. Second, we reported that a combination of low copper content and sodium addition during growth is required to maximize the Photoluminescence intensity ( i.e. to minimize the absorber-related open-circuit voltage losses). Finally, we showed that solar cell performance and stability depend not only on absorber quality but also on phenomena at interfaces (absorber/buffer and grain boundaries). Altogether, we formulate growth recommendations for the manufacture of stable CIGS/CdS solar cells with state-of-the-art efficiency.

Abstract: Low-dimensional materials have remarkable properties that are distinct from their bulk counterparts. A paradigmatic example is Ising superconductivity that occurs in monolayer materials such as NbSe2 which show a strong violation of the Pauli limit. In monolayers, this occurs due to a combination of broken inversion symmetry and spin-orbit coupling that locks the spins of the electrons out-of-plane. Bulk NbSe2 is centrosymmetric and is therefore not an Ising superconductor. We show that bulk misfit compound superconductors, (LaSe)1.14(NbSe2) and (LaSe)1.14(NbSe2)2, comprised of monolayers and bilayers of NbSe2, exhibit unexpected Ising protection with a Pauli-limit violation comparable to monolayer NbSe2, despite formally having inversion symmetry. We study these misfit compounds using complementary experimental methods in combination with first-principles calculations. We propose theoretical mechanisms of how the Ising protection can survive in bulk materials. We show how some of these mechanisms operate in these bulk compounds due to a concerted effect of charge-transfer, defects, reduction of interlayer hopping, and stacking. This highlights how Ising superconductivity can, unexpectedly, arise in bulk materials, and possibly enable the design of bulk superconductors that are resilient to magnetic fields., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 4 extended data items

Abstract: International audience; WSiC:H coatings were elaborated by reactive magnetron sputtering of a W target in an Ar/Si(CH3)4 plasma assisted by ECR microwave sources. Such coatings can be very interesting for optical or mechanical applications. The development of these coatings is based on the confrontation between in-situ diagnostics of the reactive plasma phase and material characterization of the resulting coatings. The investigation by optical emission spectroscopy of the different phenomena occurring in the reactive plasma reveals that there is a precursor flow rate range where W particles can be favored in the reactive plasma, to promote the development of composite coatings based on a SiC:H matrix, in which W-containing particles or aggregates are present. Material charac-terization such as Scanning Electron Microscopy, Ion Beam Analysis and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy are used to study the impact of the plasma phase on the microstructure and chemical composition of the deposited materials.

Abstract: International audience; A conceptual challenge toward more versatile direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) is the design of a single material electrocatalyst with high activity and durability for both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). This requires to conciliate methanol tolerance not to hinder ORR at the cathode with a good MOR activity at the anode. This is especially incompatible with Pt materials. We tackled this challenge by deriving a supramolecular concept where surface-grafted molecular ligands regulate the Pt-catalyst reactivity. ORR and MOR activities of newly reported Pt-calix[4]arenes nanocatalysts (PtCF3NPs/C) are compared to commercial benchmark PtNPs/C. PtCF3NPs/C exhibit a remarkable methanol tolerance without losing the MOR reactivity along with outstanding durability and chemical stability. Beyond designing single-catalyst material, operable in DMFC cathodic and anodic compartments, the results highlight a promising strategy for tuning interfacial properties.

Abstract: International audience; Nanostructure control is an important issue when using electroactive materials in energy conversion and storage devices. In this study, we report various methods of synthesis of nanostructured copper (II) hydroxide nitrate (Cu-2(OH)(3)NO3) with a layered hydroxide salt (LHS) structure using various synthesis methods and investigate the correlation between nanostructure, morphology, and their pseudocapacitive electrochemical behavior. The variations in nanostructure size and morphology were comprehensively explored by combining X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the electrochemical activity was characterized using cyclic voltammetry. We demonstrate that Cu-2(OH)(3)NO3-LHS nanostructured submicron particles produced by alkaline precipitation with 88% of the copper cations can cycle with a two-electron redox process. Unfortunately, the electroactivity decreases rapidly from the first cycle due to the occurrence of structural transformations and subsequent electrochemical grinding. However, samples obtained by ultrasonication and microwave synthesis, two original synthesis methods for LHS materials, formed of nanosized crystalline domains agglomerated in micron-sized particles, represent a good compromise between capacity and cyclability. Moreover, by using pair distribution function analysis on electrode materials after repeated cycling, we were able to follow the chemical and structural changes occurring in Cu-2(OH)(3)NO3 materials during electrochemical cycling with first a quick transformation to Cu2O and then the appearance of Cu metal and copper acetate Cu(II)(2)(O2CCH3)(4)center dot 2H(2)O.

Abstract: Bismuth oxyfluoride films were successfully deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering in different Ar/O2/CF4 gas mixtures. Films deposited with a reactive gas ratio (Rf), which is the O2 to (O2 + CF4) flow rates ratio, ranging between 0 and 0.5 consist of two phases, BiO0.5F2 and metallic bismuth (Bi o); whereas for higher Rf the metallic phase disappears. The content of metallic Bi into oxyfluoride matrix can be tuned by Rf, but also by the target applied power or by varying only one reactive gas flow rate. By increasing the film thickness, the composition stays stable but the phase crystallization is enhanced. Hence, we succeed to form in one-step Bi/BiO0.5F2 heterojunctions, where the metal presence improves the light absorption, the photogenerated carrier separation, and thus the photocatalytic efficiency for MO degradation in water. For all these conditions, the film obtained with Rf = 0.3 and td = 20 min seems to correspond to an optimal composition. Indeed, 90 % of MO was degraded after 2 hours of irradiation in the presence of this film, which is stable after 3 photocatalytic cycles (≈ 9 hours). This heterojunction is also efficient to photoreduce CO2 with a photoprodcution rate of 25 micro-mol/h/g and a selectivity for CO at 70%.

Abstract: International audience; AbstractQuantum structures are ideal objects by which to discover and study new sensor mechanisms and implement advanced approaches in sensor analysis to develop innovative sensor devices. Among them, one of the most interesting representatives is the Yanson point contact. It allows the implementation of a simple technological chain to activate the quantum mechanisms of selective detection in gaseous and liquid media. In this work, a portable device for multipurpose research on dendritic Yanson point contacts and quantum sensing was developed and manufactured. The device allows one to create dendritic Yanson point contacts and study their quantum properties, which are clearly manifested in the process of the electrochemical cyclic switchover effect. The device tests demonstrated that it was possible to gather data on the compositions and characteristics of the synthesized substances, and on the electrochemical processes that influence the production of dendritic Yanson point contacts, as well as on the electrophysical processes that provide information on the quantum nature of the electrical conductance of dendritic Yanson point contacts. The small size of the device makes it simple to integrate into a micro-Raman spectrometer setup. Abstract: International audience; A strong interest exists in developing surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates that uniformly enhance Raman signals of chemical and biological molecules over large scales while reaching the detection limit of trace concentrations. Even though the resonant excitation of localized surface plasmons of single or assembled metallic nanoparticles used in SERS substrates can induce large electromagnetic fields, these substrates display a SERS activity which suffers from poor reproducibility, uniformity, and stability, preventing them from being reliable for applications. In this work, we have developed self-supported large scale Ag/Au bimetallic SERS-active substrate with a high density of nanoparticles and uniform hot spots. The resultant substrates are very stable under ambient conditions, providing unchanging Raman enhancement signals even after one year of fabrication, due to the protective Au shell on the bimetallic nanoparticles. The Ag/Au bimetallic substrate exhibits remarkable SERS enhancement for nonresonant molecules, permitting the detection of trace concentrations reaching 10–13 mol/L.

Abstract: International audience; Methylmercury is the environmental form of neurotoxic mercury that is biomagnified in the food chain. Methylation rates are reduced when the metal is sequestered in crystalline mercury sulfides or bound to thiol groups in macromolecular natural organic matter. Mercury sulfide minerals are known to nucleate in anoxic zones, by reaction of the thiol-bound mercury with biogenic sulfide, but not in oxic environments. We present experimental evidence that mercury sulfide forms from thiol-bound mercury alone in aqueous dark systems in contact with air. The maximum amount of nanoparticulate mercury sulfide relative to thiol-bound mercury obtained by reacting dissolved mercury and soil organic matter matches that detected in the organic horizon of a contaminated soil situated downstream from Oak Ridge, TN, in the United States. The nearly identical ratios of the two forms of mercury in field and experimental systems suggest a common reaction mechanism for nucleating the mineral. We identified a chemical reaction mechanism that is thermodynamically favorable in which thiol-bound mercury polymerizes to mercury−sulfur clusters. The clusters form by elimination of sulfur from the thiol complexes via breaking of mercury−sulfur bonds as in an alkylation reaction. Addition of sulfide is not required. This nucleation mechanism provides one explanation for how mercury may be immobilized, and eventually sequestered, in oxygenated surface environments.

Abstract: International audience; {112}(beta) twins are observed in a superelastic beta Ti-24Nb-4Zr-8Sn (wt.%) single crystal after tensile test. A careful Schmid factor analysis shows that these twins are formed in the antitwinning sense regarding the classical {112}(beta) twinning system of bcc structures. These are then {112}(beta) antitwins. Moreover, a full stress-induced martensitic (SIM) transformation of beta phase into a`` martensite is evidenced from in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. This transformation is fully accomplished before the onset of plastic deformation and, in turn, the formation of twins. From crystallographic reconstruction, {112}(beta) antitwins are shown to be passively formed from the reversion, during the reverse SIM transformation when the stress is released, of {110}(alpha '') twins actually formed in alpha '' martensite. The martensitic transformation occurring before twinning plays a key role in the activation of antitwinning systems by reducing both shear and shuffle magnitudes of twinning. Variant selection of stress-induced martensite and Schmid factor analysis show that the classical {112}(beta) twins can never be activated in b titanium alloys involving SIM transformation, while the non-classical {112}(beta) twinning system in the antitwinning sense is always favored.

Abstract: International audience; By selecting two electroactive species immobilized in a layered double hydroxide backbone (LDH) host, one able to act as a positive electrode material and the other as a negative one, it was possible to match their capacity to design an innovative energy storage device. Each electrode material is based on electroactive species, riboflavin phosphate (RF) on one side and ferrocene carboxylate (FCm) on the other, both interleaved into a layered double hydroxide (LDH) host structure to avoid any possible molecule migration and instability. The intercalation of the electroactive guest molecules is demonstrated by X-ray diffraction with the observation of an interlayer LDH spacing of about 2 nm in each case. When successfully hosted into LDH interlayer space, the electrochemical behavior of each hybrid assembly was scrutinized separately in aqueous electrolyte to characterize the redox reaction occurring upon cycling and found to be a rapid faradic type. Both electrode materials were placed face to face to achieve a new aqueous battery (16C rate) that provides a first cycle-capacity of about 7 mAh per gram of working electrode material LDH/FCm at 10 mV/s over a voltage window of 2.2 V in 1M sodium acetate, thus validating the hybrid LDH host approach on both electrode materials even if the cyclability of the assembly has not yet been met.

Abstract: International audience; Sulfated glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are fundamental constituents of both the cell surface and extracellular matrix. By playing a key role in cell-cell and cell-matri x interactions, GAGs are involved in many physiological and pathological processes. To design GAG mimetics with similar therapeutic potential as the natural ones, the specific structural features, among them sulfate content, sulfation pattern, and chain length, should be considered. In the present study, we describe a sulfation method based on microwave radiation to obtain highly sulfated derivatives as GAG mimetics. The starting low-molecular-weight (LMW) derivative was prepared from the infernan exopolysaccharide, a highly branched naturally slightly sulfated heteropolysaccharide synthesized by the deep-sea hydrothermal vent bacterium Alteromonas infernus. LMW highly sulfated infernan derivatives obtained by conventional heating sulfation have already been shown to display GAG-mimetic properties. Here, the potential of microwave-assisted sulfation versus that of the conventional method to obtain GAG mimetics was explored. Structural analysis by NMR revealed that highly sulfated derivatives from the two methods shared similar structural features, emphasizing that microwave-assisted sulfation with a 12-fold shorter reaction time is as efficient as the classical one.

Abstract: International audience; High-performance electrochemical applications have expedited the research in high-power devices. As such, supercapacitors, including electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) and pseudocapacitors, have gained significant attention due to their high power density, long cycle life, and fast charging capabilities. Yet, no device lasts forever. It is essential to understand the mechanisms behind performance degradation and aging so that these bottlenecks can be addressed and tailored solutions can be developed. Herein, the factors contributing to the aging and degradation of supercapacitors, including electrode materials, electrolytes, and other aspects of the system, such as pore blocking, electrode compositions, functional groups, and corrosion of current collectors are examined. The monitoring and characterizing of the performance degradation of supercapacitors, including electrochemical methods, in situ, and ex situ techniques are explored. In addition, the degradation mechanisms of different types of electrolytes and electrode materials and the effects of aging from an industrial application standpoint are analyzed. Next, how electrode degradations and electrolyte decompositions can lead to failure, and pore blocking, electrode composition, and other factors that affect the device's lifespan are examined. Finally, the future directions and challenges for reducing supercapacitors' performance degradation, including developing new materials and methods for characterizing and monitoring the devices are summarized.

Abstract: International audience; Silver biodistribution and gut toxicity of two commercially available colloidal silver products, Mesosilver™ and AgC, were evaluated in male mice. AgC is composed solely of ionic silver (Ag+) while Mesosilver™ contains a mix of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and Ag+ ions. After high-dose (approximately 3 mg per kg body weight (bw) per day) sub-chronic exposure, silver accumulation was close for Mesosilver™ and AgC. The combination of micro X-ray fluorescence and micro X-ray absorption spectroscopy showed that metallic AgNPs and Ag+ ions initially contained in Mesosilver™ were subjected to physicochemical modifications during their fate in the gut. In the colon, most Ag atoms were oxidized and dissolved to form Ag complexes with thiol groups (-SH) of proteins and/or peptides. Sub-chronic exposure at lower dose (150 μg per kg bw per day) led to a moderate impact on the gut barrier for both colloidal silver products. An increase in colonic LCN-2 was observed only after AgC exposure. For gut microbiota at the genus level, exposure to Mesosilver™ led to a decrease in Ruminococcus and Anaerosporobacter, while Intestinimonas increased. Exposure to AgC resulted in an increase in Clostridium sp. ASF356 and Tyzzerella, while the relative abundance of Anaerosporobacter decreased. In addition, the Saccharomycetes fungal population increased. Near-infrared spectroscopy was able to satisfactorily discriminate the Mesosilver™-vs. AgC-exposed mice for both exposure doses. This study highlights the applicability of biophysics-based methodologies for providing novel insights into colloidal silver uptake, fate and toxicological effects after oral exposure

Abstract: International audience; Li-ion batteries are growing in demand and such growth calls for the quest for high-energy-density electrode materials. Li-rich layered oxides that show both cationic and anionic redox are expected to meet the high energy requirement. However, the oxygen anion activity triggers numerous structural and electronic rearrangements that need to be understood prior to envisioning applications. Here, we chemically design two new LixIrS2 polymorphs to further interrogate the mechanisms of the ligand redox process. By combined structural and spectroscopic characterizations, we show that electrochemical lithiation/delithiation of the polymorphs involve different sulfur redox couples that stand as unusual behavior. These structure-dependent kinetic pathways lead to an similar to 1 V difference between the two polymorphs, hence providing the missing link between the structure and hysteresis in anionic redox systems. These insights into the origin of hysteresis can guide proper parameters to cure it, hence laying the groundwork for the design of new practical electrode materials.

Abstract: International audience; Ambipolar materials such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, or 2D transition metal chalcogenides are very attractive for a large range of applications, namely, light-emitting transistors, logic circuits, gas sensors, flash memories, and solar cells. In this work, it is shown that the nanoarchitectonics of inorganic Mo(6) cluster-based iodides enable to form thin films exhibiting photophysical properties that enable their classification as new members of the restricted family of ambipolar materials. Thus, the electronic properties of the ternary iodide Cs(2)[{Mo(6)I(8)(i)}I(6)(a)] and those of thin films of the aqua-complex-based compound [{Mo(6)I(8)(i)}I(4)(a)(H(2)O)(2)(a)]·xH(2)O were investigated through an in-depth photoelectrochemical study. Once hole/electron pairs are created, the holes and electrons turn to be transported simultaneously in opposite directions, and their lifetimes exhibit similar values. The ambipolar properties were demonstrated via the integration of [{Mo(6)I(8)(i)}I(4)(a)(H(2)O)(2)(a)]·xH(2)O as light harvesters in an all-solid solar cell. A significant photoresponse with a typical diode characteristic clearly provides evidence of the simultaneous transfer and transport of holes and electrons within the [{Mo(6)I(8)(i)}I(4)(a)(H(2)O)(2)(a)]·xH(2)O layer. The ambipolar behavior results, on the one hand, from the confinement of electrons imposed by the nanometric size of the molecular metal clusters and, on the other hand, from the poor electronic interactions between clusters in the solid state. Such molecular structure-based layers lead naturally to an intrinsic semiconducting behavior.
