The Sorrento Peninsula is characterized by a significant occurrence of examples of vernacular architecture, which exhibit distinctive morphological and constructive features. These have been the subject of numerous studies. However, some buildings have undergone a process of transformation over time, the details of which have yet to be investigated. Architectures that initially held a rural character were enlarged and ennobled, thereby becoming what could be termed as “villas of delights”. However, these clearly manifest their origin based on the permanence of some vernacular features. This paper focuses on the analysis of a case study, Villa Murat, which is exemplary in illustrating this process. This thorough interdisciplinary research combines historical investigation, based mainly on archival documents, with a direct examination of the Villa. This has enabled the retracing of the building’s evolution and of the events that occurred in it. An integrated survey, which employed photogrammetry and laser scanning, enabled the assessment of the current state of conservation. The ultimate objective of this research is to propose conservative interventions which, in conjunction with the suggested new intended use, could ensure the preservation of the Villa.

The investigation of karst channels is an important work to ensure the safety of underground construction and mining engineering. At present, the combination of the geophysical method and drilling method is the primary and most commonly used approach in karst detection work. However, sometimes limited by conditions, it is difficult to carry out drilling work. In coastal limestone mines, karst is usually developed, so it is crucial and significant to carry out the exploration work on karst channels. Taking a coastal limestone mine in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China as a case study, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and transient electromagnetic method (TEM) were adopted to investigate the subsurface low-resistivity anomalies. According to the results, the distribution area of karst channels was preliminarily determined by the low-resistivity responses. Then, a sluicing test was carried out to analyze the primary direction of underground karst channels in this area, and several main leakage and outflow points were identified, which could serve as evidence for the channel paths. Besides, the ERT method was used for repeated exploration in the detection area not submerged by seawater after the sluicing test, and the results showed that the low-resistivity responses were consistent before and after the sluicing test. Combining the results of the electrical exploration and the sluicing test, the direction and main pathway of underground runoff were determined, and the distribution of underground karst channels in the study area could be obtained. A visual inspection, which entails field surveying, such as photodocumentation and footage, is the first step of a multi-level approach to bridge health assessment. Furthermore, the use of surface models, CAD drawings, and orthophotos, guarantees complete and accurate documentation, thus allowing for a better understanding of the environment, the anthropic structures, and their relationships. All the georeferenced surveys' outputs are especially advisable within a prespective of periodical monitoring, as forseen by national legislation. The work is aimed to study two adjacent bridges over the Arno River in Lastra a Signa, Italy. One of the bridges, Ponte nuovo sull'Arno, is an overpass for motor vehicles. The other one, which is called Passarella sull'Arno, is a pedestrian viaduct. A topographic reference network has been settled using the GNSS survey technique. 3D point clouds of the bridges have been acquired by performing a Laser Scanning survey. A bathymetric survey has been carried out to acquire a 3D point cloud of submerged bridges' parts and the riverbed. Through a Photogrammetric survey from RPAS, an orthophoto of the area has been built. Finally, evidence of historical submerged bridge structures has been identified thanks to the multi beam survey. The work's objective is to integrate surveying geomatics techniques to create a reliable survey of the bridges, the surrounding area, and the riverbed, as support to the most common structural health assessment methods. The proposed application of the HBIM methodology for digitising a productive-industrial structure is based on the integration of data from different sources. An aerial photogrammetric survey (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle - UAV) was considered the most appropriate technique for the case. Therefore, a Scan-to-BIM modelling was carried out, keeping in mind a subsequent texturisation of the smart objects employing the photogrammetric images obtained from the UAV survey. Currently, applying the BIM methodology to the built environment is still a challenge; indeed, three-dimensional modelling based on survey point clouds is not automatic. Any BIM software is designed for new constructions, whereas the existing Heritage is characterised by unique and distinctive shapes, where each element has a specific and variable inclination, shape and thickness; therefore, it is necessary to adapt the available tools. Creating intelligent parametric objects capable of representing the unique and singular shapes and geometries of historic architecture is a significant challenge of HBIM modelling. A workflow for the acquisition, processing and management of the survey data and the consequent modelling in a BIM environment of a disused industrial plant previously used as a tobacco factory was formalised. The aim was, therefore, to develop a model that is as close as possible to the real one and, at the same time, still keeps the informative aspects in order to promote the conservation and possible refurbishment of the cultural heritage through the use of photorealistic visualisation tools in real-time. This paper focuses on a research project for the acquisition and post-production of digital data to create informative virtual representations and digital twins of different European Cultural Heritage sites. The goal was to establish a reliable database for a multi-scalar web platform, also accessible through extended reality (XR) tools. This initiative aims to support the promotion and management of cultural and historical monuments within the context of European Cultural Routes supported by the Council of Europe. The project involves different case studies spanning European geographic regions, such as the Upper Kama in Russia, the Valencian Routes of Jaime I in Spain, and the Gdańsk fortresses in Poland. The methodology employed in this effort primarily relies on integrated rapid survey techniques. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) technologies were used for data collection. These methods contribute to the creation of accurate 3D databases and models that transform the cultural routes into a digital format accessible via an informative platform. The actions presented in this paper are part of the European project “PROMETHEUS”, which is funded by the Horizon 2020 program of the European Union. The project involves collaboration between universities and enterprises, fostering inter-sectoral cooperation. Various techniques such as photographic archives, census analysis, and scan-to-BIM (building information modeling) processes are employed to develop this method further. In fact, the ultimate goal of the project is to establish a framework that can be replicated in other cultural contexts, enhancing the digital documentation and valorization of heritage sites.

The potentialities of the use of the UAV survey as a base for the generation of the context mesh are illustrated through the experiments on the case study, the Crotone Fortress, proposing a systematic general methodology and two procedural workflows for the importation of the triangulated model, maintaining its real geographical coordinates, in the Autodesk Revit environment through a Dynamo Visual Programming script [VPL]. First, the texturisation of the mesh of the urban context was experimented with, using the real-sized photogrammetric orthoimage as Revit material; therefore, the reproduction of the discretised detailed areas of the urban context was tested. They were imported via Dynamo by reading the coordinates of the vertices of every single face that constitutes the triangulated model and associating to each of them the corresponding real colorimetric data. Starting from the georeferenced context of the photogrammetric mesh, nine federated BIM models were produced: the general context models, the detailed models and the architectural model of the fortress. In this paper, the state-of-the-art concerning new methodologies for surveying in coastal areas in order to obtain an efficient quantification of submerged and emerged environments is described and evaluated. This work integrates an interdisciplinary approach involving both geomatics and robotics and focuses on definition, implementation, and development of a methodology to execute integrated aerial and underwater survey campaigns in shallow water areas. A preliminary test was performed at Gorzente Lakes near Genoa (Italy), to develop and integrate different survey techniques, enabling working in a smarter way, reducing costs and increasing safety for the operators. In this context, Remote Sensing techniques were integrated with a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) carrying an aerial optical sensor for photogrammetry and with an ASV (Autonomous Surface Vehicle) expressly addressed to work in extremely shallow water with underwater acoustic sensors (single echo sounder). The obtained continuous seamless DSM (Digital Surface Model) for the entire environment was reconstructed by the combination of different sensing systems by limiting reliance on the GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) support. The research on Carlo III bridge in Moiano (Benevento, Italy) has been an opportunity for testing the HBIM methodology to the architectural heritage in terms of not only gathering information but as a design tool. The bridge, almost without previous drawings and documents, was surveyed with an integrated approach using laser scanner, photogrammetry and topography. Abstract Background In 2016, after 8 years of twice-annual nationwide preventive chemotherapy (PC) administration to school-age children (SAC), the Bangladesh Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MOHFW) sought improved impact and intervention monitoring data to assess progress toward the newly adopted goal of eliminating soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) as a public health problem. Methods We surveyed four Bangladeshi districts between August and October 2017. We conducted a multi-stage, cluster-sample, household survey which produced equal-probability samples for preschool-age children (PSAC; 1–4 years), SAC (5–14 years), and adults (≥ 15 years). Standardized questionnaires were administered, using Android-based smart phones running an Open Data Kit application. Stool samples were collected and testing for STH prevalence and infection intensity used the Kato-Katz technique. Results In all, 4318 stool samples were collected from 7164 participants. Estimates of STH prevalence by risk group in three of the four surveyed districts ranged from 3.4 to 5.0%, all with upper, 1-sided 95% confidence limits 50% prevalence in at least one risk group. Among all tested specimens, Ascaris lumbricoides was the most common STH parasite [8.2% (n = 352)], followed by Trichuris trichiura [0.9% (n = 37)], and hookworm [0.6% (n = 27)]. In each district, PC coverage among SAC was above the 75% program target but did not exceed 45% among PSAC in any district. Improved sanitation at home, school, or work was over 90% in all districts. Conclusions In the three low-prevalence districts, the MOHFW is considering decreasing the frequency of mass drug administration, per World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. Also, the MOHFW will focus programmatic resources and supervisory efforts on Sirajganj District. Despite considering WHO guidance, the MOHFW will not expand PC administration to women of reproductive age partly due to the low prevalence of hookworm and T. trichiura, the STH parasites that contribute most to morbidity in that risk group. Data collected from surveys such as ours would help effectively guide future STH control efforts in Bangladesh and elsewhere.

An important objective of the 50x2030 Initiative to Close the Agricultural Data Gap is to empower partner countries' statistical systems for evidence-based decision-making, especially to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2. The reference survey instruments of the Initiative allow the monitoring of SDG 2, particularly through indicators 2.3.1, 2.3.2 and 2.4.1. As the lead agency of the Initiative's Data Production component, FAO assists countries in collecting the required data. The paper discusses the experiences, challenges and solutions encountered in the partner countries engaged in the 50x2030 Initiative and one of its preceding survey programs, the AGRISurvey Programme – namely Cambodia, Ecuador, Georgia, Indonesia, Nepal, Senegal, and Uganda. The knowledge and study of built heritage is now deeply connected to methodologies associated with the capture of surface details via the production of point-data. These methodologies enable researchers to gather a wider range of information, which is increasingly more connected to technological advances. Such approaches influence the management of data, and these data are often redundant due to the ways in which they are captured. Massive data capture does not include preliminary selection based on metric, geometric, and material features of the object. A multi-scalar approach, in which the criteria for data capture depends on the goals of the survey, is needed to optimize the relationship between information and the scale of the models to be built. This case study involving a selection of fountains in Rome aims to apply these principles to urban contexts defined by a strong spatial connection between architectural and sculptural elements. Survey can express this distinctiveness through complex, dynamic, and effective digital models.

Existing road and railway systems often incorporate bridges, part of the historical heritage, that need careful attention not only for their operational safety and safeguard. For this reason, the approach to the inspection and to the constructional knowledge requires the integration and coordination of phases like the analysis of primary sources to the in-situ characterization of the local and global performance of components and materials. The management of infrastructures has to exploit digital technologies, both in the data collection phase and in the decision-making process. The paper deals with the econservation paradigm and discusses the results of an investigation on the potentialities offered by parametric models of historic bridges. It also checks and validates the introduction of the approach advised by recent National regulations in the framework of the Historic Bridge Information Modelling (HBrIM) combining safety and conservation knowledge instances. Il saggio, incentrato sullo studio di Borgo Pietro Lupo a Mineo in Sicilia, a tutti gli effetti un piccolo centro storico, intende proporre un progetto pilota per la sua rivitalizzazione e il suo adeguamento funzionale e strutturale, basato su un rigido protocollo di documentazione e analisi, realizzato anche grazie all’utilizzo di nuovi strumenti di indagine. Attraverso tale caso, il lavoro si propone di mettere in evidenza il ruolo del rilievo - primo essenziale episodio della tutela - in vista della prevenzione o riduzione del rischio sismico in zone esposte al ripetersi di eventi calamitosi. Esso vuole mostrare come appaia imprescindibile che il momento conoscitivo sia condotto da operatori che, oltre alla corretta esecuzione dell’attività mensoria, abbiano il bagaglio tecnico/culturale necessario per leggere l’architettura.

The monitoring of areas at risk is one of the topics of great interest in the scientific world in order to preserve natural areas of particular environmental value. The present work aims to develop a suitable survey and analysis methodology, in order to optimise multi-temporal processing. In particular, the phenomenon investigated the monitoring of cliffs in southern Apulia (Italy). To achieve this objective, different algorithms were tested and implemented in an in-house software called ICV. The implementation involved the use of different calculation procedures, combined and aimed at the analysis of the phenomenon in question. The validation of the experimentation was shown through the elaboration of a series of datasets of a particular area within the investigated coastline.

The construction of the ancient buildings was largely based on geometric projective rules. The analysis of these rules allows to understand the level of the constructors' knowledge and to interpret the meaning of these architecture. Today this research can be more easily approached thanks to the current survey techniques and to accuracy tools, which simplify the survey of monuments. The analysis of Armenian churches highlighted the importance of the role of light, both in the building construction and in the spatial meaning linked to the liturgy. In this paper the case of S. The digitization is the first feat of safety, knowledge and management of Cultural Heritage. The technological development has produced a complexity increase to manage the big data acquired. This paper shows the best practices for the digitization of a museum (National Gallery of Marche), hosted in a historical and complex building: it's a problem of contents and "container" (the Urbino Ducal Palace = a city in the appearance of a Palace). This is the case study of the first challenging aim of the CIVITAS project. The digitization workflow has combined the several sensors and technology at different scales, such as static and mobile wearable laser scanners systems, the different focals for internal and external cameras, 360 panoramas and HD images. The White Mosque of Al-Jazzar is the biggest complex in Israel outside the city of Jerusalem. In the center of the fleeting state of coexistence between the Muslim community and the Jewish community, the complex, part of the UNESCO protection area, is currently involved in a redevelopment project promoted by the Welfare Association and carried forward, in 2017, Experimental Laboratory of Education and Research DAda Lab (Drawing Architecture and Document-Action) of Pavia University and the University and Enterprise Joint Laboratory "Landscape Survey & Design" of the University of Florence and Pavia. The research activities has provided a digital survey of the complex and a diagnostic survey based on the relevant data and aimed at identifying any structural problems. The aim of the research is to create a databases useful for the diagnosis of the walls structural instabilities and to propose a masterplan of hypothesis for the restoration activities aimed also to the promotion of the architectural complex in the Cultural Heritage of the city of Acri.

Cultural Heritage represents a very difficult subject to be handled. Despite its cross-cutting and multi-level characters (scientific, social, economic, political, etc.), nevertheless the topic can hardly be framed in a proper and comprehensive way. Any project addressing Cultural Heritage (documentation, preservation, retrofitting, valorisation and so on) actually tends to exalt a specific point of view and, therefore, to neglect potentially crucial contributions coming from different fields of expertise. Comprehensive solutions to this problem seem by now available thanks to ICT and the 3D Digitalization and Multimedia Technologies: nevertheless the more the platforms improve their multidisciplinary capabilities and interoperability, the more they need an intelligent design and an accurate control during the implementation phase. Built Cultural Heritage (as historic buildings, districts, sites, etc.) perfectly represents the wide range of situations, which have to be tackled. Any intervention, in fact, from the design phase to its realization and validation, actually deals with several different interlaced layers that together depict a “complex system”. The construction of a Knowledge System represents a crucial step in correctly addressing the problem.

"Giving a bird-fly look at the Rome countryside, throughout the Middle Age central period, it would show as if the multiple city towers has been widely spread around the territory" on a radial range of maximum thirty kilometers far from the Capitol Hill center (Carocci and Vendittelli, 2004). This is the consequence of the phenomenon identified with the "Incasalamento" neologism, described in depth in the following paper, intended as the general process of expansion of the urban society interests outside the downtown limits, started from the half of the XII and developed through all the XIII century, slowing down and ending in the following years. From the XIX century till today the architectural finds of this reality have raised the interest of many national and international scientists, which aimed to study and catalog them all to create a complete framework that, cause of its extension, didn't allow yet attempting any element by element detailed analysis. From the described situation has started our plan of intervention, we will apply integrated survey methods and technologies of terrestrial and UAV near stereo-photogrammetry, by the use of low cost drones, more than action cameras and reflex on extensible rods, integrated and referenced with GPS and topographic survey. In the final project we intend to produce some 3D scaled and textured surface models of any artifact (almost two hundreds were firstly observed still standing), to singularly study the dimensions and structure, to analyze the building materials and details and to formulate an hypothesis about any function, based even on the position along the territory. These models, successively georeferenced, will be imported into a 2D and 3D WebGIS and organized in layers made visible on basemaps of reference, as much as on historical maps. In recent years, the GeCo Laboratory has undertaken numerous projects to digitalize vast and complex buildings; the specific nature of the different projects has resulted in a case-by-case approach, each time working on past experiences and updating not only the hardware and software tools but also the management and processing methods. This paper presents the workflow followed for the survey of the Fortress of Saint John the Baptist in Florence, an on-going interdisciplinary project. Presently Florence's main trade fair congress centre, at the same time it hosts various buildings that bear witness to the fortress's life-history, combining constructions from the Medici and Lorraine eras with recently built exhibition facilities. Now new research has been required due to the realization of new pavilions and the regeneration of the whole complex. This has included a critical survey, material testing, diagnostic investigations and stratigraphic analyses to define the building's state of preservation. The working group comprises specialists from different institutions, amongst which the Italian Military Geographic Institute, the University of Florence, the National Research Council Institute for the Preservation and Enhancement of the Cultural Heritage and the Florence City Council. This paper presents the identified obstacles, needs and selected solutions for the study of the medieval castle of Franchimont, located in the province of Liège (Belgium). After taking into account the requirements from all the disciplines at work as well as the problems that would have to be tackled, the creation of a 3D point cloud was decided. This solution would be able to deal with the characteristics and needs of a research involving building archaeology and related fields. The decision was made in order to manage all of the available data and to provide a common working tool for every involved cultural heritage actor. The paper presents a software dedicated to the elaboration of point clouds, called Intelligent Cloud Viewer (ICV), made in-house by AESEI software (Spin-Off of Politecnico di Bari), allowing to view point cloud of several tens of millions of points, also on of "no" very high performance systems. The elaborations are carried out on the whole point cloud and managed by means of the display only part of it in order to speed up rendering. It is designed for 64-bit Windows and is fully written in C ++ and integrates different specialized modules for computer graphics (Open Inventor by SGI, Silicon Graphics Inc), maths (BLAS, EIGEN), computational geometry (CGAL, Computational Geometry Algorithms Library), registration and advanced algorithms for point clouds (PCL, Point Cloud Library), advanced data structures (BOOST, Basic Object Oriented Supporting Tools), etc. ICV incorporates a number of features such as, for example, cropping, transformation and georeferencing, matching, registration, decimation, sections, distances calculation between clouds, etc. It has been tested on photographic and TLS (Terrestrial Laser Scanner) data, obtaining satisfactory results. The potentialities of the software have been tested by carrying out the photogrammetric survey of the Castel del Monte which was already available in previous laser scanner survey made from the ground by the same authors. For the aerophotogrammetric survey has been adopted a flight height of approximately 1000ft AGL (Above Ground Level) and, overall, have been acquired over 800 photos in just over 15 minutes, with a covering not less than 80%, the planned speed of about 90 knots. Post-earthquake reconstruction is a sadly recurring theme in Italy in the last 15 years, and the amount of people, monuments, administrations, technicians and economies involved make it a central theme for all sciences dealing with the anthropic environment. The article witnesses a part of a more extensive research conducted by integrating different knowledge and in fact constituting a unitary technical-scientific chain which, from the survey of some historical centers, has led to the proposal of urban and architectural projects. Particularly here is shown the work done for Montebello di Bertona, in the province of Pescara, inserted in the crater of the earthquake of April 2009 and wants to propose an interdisciplinary model useful in every building process but particularly efficient in the case of post- earthquake recostruction.
