Background: Removal of plaque and food particle between teeth represent interdental cleaning. Every patient's self‐care program includes plaque removal efficiently and systematically. Periodontal disease, tooth decay and tooth loss may result from the absence of interdental cleaning or even an irregular and unsuccessful interdental cleaning. Aim: The aim of the current study was to assess the effect of inter‐dental aids, including dental floss and toothpicks, on gingival and plaque indices. Methods: A questionnaire including age, gender, education level and other information was obtained from 150 male subjects who were systemically and periodontally healthy. Clinical periodontal parameters (including plaque index and gingival index) were taken from each subject. The participants were categorized into different groups according to the use of inter‐dental aids (dental floss, dental picks and without any interdental aids). The participants were divided into the toothbrush‐alone group, including participants who did not use either dental floss or toothpicks; the dental floss group, including participants who used dental floss; and the toothpick group including participants who used toothpicks. Plaque and gingival indices compared among groups. Results: Statistical analysis showed that the maximum mean of Plaque index was found in the toothbrush‐alone group (1.09 ± 0.43), while the lowest mean of Plaque index was found in the dental floss group (0.87 ± 0.39). Plaque index of the toothpick group was (0.99 ± 0.41) with statistically significant difference among groups (p‐value = 0.04*). The goals of this study were to identify oral self-care behavior and knowledge among dental students at Basrah Dentistry College and laypersons, as well as to assess the effectiveness of knowledge in improving oral hygiene performance in our culture. Materials and methods. Students and laypersons completed a self-administered questionnaires in their dormitories that included information on age, gender, tooth cleaning material, and frequency of tooth cleaning. The questionnaire was based on Google form questions found on the internet. Result. The total of 281 persons from both dental students & laypersons participated in the study. All the questionnaires were returned after the completion and were analyzed. The study shows that there is a small deference between dental students and laypersons due to the availability of many sources of information nowadays such as dental clinics, internet and TV. Dental students perform better in oral hygiene than laypersons, which is undoubtedly owing to the lectures they receive in their studies and the setting of practical work in the college clinic, which makes them more interested and motivated. Conclusion. The outcome of the study is that there is a little high level of knowledge about oral self-care procedures in dental students than in laypersons. So there is a need to educate the laypersons to increase their concern about oral hygiene and a need to provide dental students with the knowledge of how to instruct the laypersons that will visit their clinic in the future.

Introduction: Periodontal disease is regarded as one of the preventable diseases. It can be prevented through effective plaque control measures that require mechanical instrumentation with various surgical or non-surgical periodontal therapies as well as daily oral hygiene measures. Dental professionals must be competent enough to promote good oral health by educating patients with daily oral hygiene practice measures. In this regard, the study was designed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice behaviour for using as well as prescribing dental floss among the dental interns of Nepal. Methods: An online questionnaire consisting of two sections; the first comprised of the socio- demographic and professional aspects and the second consisted of questions related to knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding the use of dental floss, and its prescription was prepared using Google forms and the link was shared. The data were analysed in Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 software. Results: In this study, the participants were familiar with the dental floss, but many lacked awareness regarding its proper use. Ninety-nine (64.3%) of the participants personally used dental floss. Only six (3.9%) never prescribed it to their patients. Among those who prescribed, only 37 (25%) always demonstrated the techniques. Conclusions: The study indicated that many participants used dental floss, however, educating and recommending the patient about it was comparatively low. This emphasizes the need to increase the awareness and use of interdental aids among dental interns to provide good oral self-care practices for the patient.

Introduction: Dental treatment aims at correction of existing disease; prevention of future disease with rehabilitation of patient’s lost functional capacity and aesthetics. Fixed dental prosthesis is any prosthesis that is cemented to a natural tooth or dental implants abutments that cannot be removed by patient. The success of prosthodontic treatment is related to prosthesis survival, with its ability to fulfil biologic and patient-evaluated objectives with patient satisfaction. This study is aimed to find the patient satisfaction with fixed prosthodontic treatment. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was done in a tertiary care hospital among 102 patients rehabilitated with fixed dental prosthesis from August to September 2019 after taking ethical approval from Institutional Review Committee of Kathmandu Medical College. (IRC No. 1207201918). Convenience sampling was done. The questionnaire assessed patient’s satisfaction of fixed prosthesis on the basis of appearance, chewing ability, cleansibility, speech and awareness of oral hygiene measures for cleaning of the prosthesis. Data entry was done in Microsoft excel and analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS)version 20.0, point estimate at 95% Confidence Interval was calculated along with frequency and proportion for binary data. Results: The majority of the patients 87 (85.3%) were satisfied with their fixed prosthesis, at 95% confidence interval (93.5- 81%). Eighty one (79.4%) were satisfied with their chewing ability; 99 (97.1%) satisfied with their speech, 78 (76.4%) satisfied with appearance of fixed prosthesis. Ninety eight patients (96.1%) were aware of oral hygiene measures, out of which only 66 (67.3%) used interdental aids for cleaning of their fixed prosthesis. Conclusions: Several factors (chewing ability, appearance, speech, cleansibility of fixed prosthesis) had positive impact on overall satisfaction in majority of the patients. Dentists should continue to emphasise on the significance of maintaining good oral hygiene and use of interdental aids for the longevity of fixed prosthesis.

Aim and Introduction : It is needless to state that health and hygiene go hand in hand and of the various categories of hygiene, oral hygiene has a colossal contribution to positive health for any individual. Zealous and correct lifestyle characteristics are related to high standards of oral hygiene, and good habits must be inculcated in the early years of one's life. The aim of this survey was to create awareness and to know the perception of self care practices and oral health care among the adolescent population . Materials and method : Self administered questionnaire was designed based on awareness .The questionnaire was distributed through a google docs link to the study population which included adolescents. The participants were explained about the purpose of study in detail . The current study was a pilot study involving 100 adolescents to evaluate their oral health care practices. This survey was conducted in the month of May 2020. Once after the results of the survey were obtained, bar graphs and pie charts with a frequency table were prepared. The statistics done using SPSS software, chi square test was done to check the association and a p value of 0.05 was said to be statistically significant. Results and Discussion : Majority of adolescents practice several ways to maintain good oral hygiene like using neem, clove, mouth washes, interdental aids and they were also aware about oral health care . Conclusion : Although over half of the adolescent population rated their oral health status as excellent, it is apparent from the study that their oral self-care and dental attendance is inadequate. Background: The objective of this study was to assess the knowledge of oral hygiene aids among general population. Method: The study was conducted on general population in and around Chennai. A total of 100 members were selected and self-assessed questionnaire was formulated to assess the awareness on oral hygiene aids Result: About 72% of the population are aware of the commonly available oral hygiene aids; 42% population used tooth paste and brush as a method of cleaning their teeth; 50% brushed once daily; 51% used soft brushes to brush; 54% of the population change their bushes only after 6 months; 44% followed circular motion to brush their teeth; 43% don’t use mouthwash; 49% of population media is the source of information; to about 83% of population know the importance of oral hygiene. Conclusion: The present study shows better knowledge and awareness of oral hygiene aids but the oral hygiene practice seemed to be non-satisfactory. Introduction: Patient with fixed partial dentures (FPDs) requires regular, lifelong professional maintenance providing repeated oral hygiene interventions and reinstructions regarding maintaining proper oral hygiene around fixed prosthesis. A detailed explanation of the importance of post cementation instructions and proper/daily practice of dental aids (such as floss, special end-tufted, and interdental brushes) will improve and maintain the healthy condition of the alveolar mucosa. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire consisting of 15 questions was prepared to obtain information about knowledge, attitude, and awareness on oral hygiene practices toward FPDs. A total of 50 patients wearing FPDs were chosen as participants. Results: About 80% of patients do not use any special cleaning aids to clean the prosthesis. Only 10% of patients use special cleaning aids to clean the prosthesis. 60% of patients reported the need for prosthesis is the function. 75% of patients are satisfied with their prosthesis. Conclusion: Highly significantly number of patients did not use any form of interdental aids to clean their fixed prosthesis. Objective: Maintenance of meticulous oral health practices is critical for patients who are under orthodontic treatment as failure to do so can result in deterioration of periodontal health. Thus, the present study was commenced to assess dental negligence and oral health status among patients undergoing orthodontic treatment using dental neglect scale (DNS) questionnaire. Materials and Methods: The present cross-sectional study was planned and carried out among the 40 patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment. The study comprised of two questionnaires, one was close-ended questionnaire which consisted of questions regarding patient practice in maintenance of oral health and other questionnaire comprised of DNS followed by examination of oral hygiene status using Oral Hygiene Index Simplified. Data so obtained were subjected to analysis using SPSS version 20 and Chi-square test was used to statistically analyze data with P < 0.05 regarded as a statistically significant value. Results: The present study revealed that 63% among the studied orthodontic patients brushed once daily, 26% brushed twice daily, and 11% brushed thrice. About one-fourth was using brush with soft bristles and only 9% among the respondents used interdental aids. Data revealed positive correlation between DNS and oral hygiene index-simplified score with P < 0.05. Conclusion: The present study found that less frequency of brushing, rinsing mouth, and eating sticky and hard food can be attributed to self-neglect of the orthodontic patients. Introduction: The objective of this study was to examine the perception of gingival bleeding and oral health practices in dental anxious and nonanxious Nigerian primary school teachers. Materials and Methods: This cross‑sectional was conducted among public primary school teachers in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. Self‑administered questionnaire which elicited information on demography, dental anxiety, gingival bleeding, teeth cleaning, and dental attendance was the data collection tool. Dental anxiety was assessed using Modified Dental Anxiety Scale and participants with scores ≥19 and <19 were considered as dental anxious and nonanxious, respectively. Results: A total of 151 teachers participated in the study giving 83.9% retrieval rate. Of the 151 teachers studied, 29 of them reported dental anxiety giving 19.2% prevalence. Dental anxious participants erroneously considered gingival bleeding during teeth cleaning as the manifestation of dental caries and gingival recession more than the nonanxious participants. Dental anxious participants reported lower gingival bleeding preventive measures awareness and took more actions other than visiting the dentist for gingival bleeding than the nonanxious participants. Dental anxious participants reported more daily teeth cleaning for reasonable duration using a combination of chewing stick, toothbrush, and toothpaste than the nonanxious participants. Dental anxious participants reported more irregular dental attendance and fair/poor gingival health status than nonanxious participants. Conclusion: Data from this study revealed that dental anxious participants generally had better oral self‑care practices, poorer gingival health, more irregular dental attendance, lower gingival bleeding preventive measures awareness, more erroneous belief, and took more improper steps for gingival bleeding management than the nonanxious participants. Clinical Relevance to Interdisciplinary Dentistry Dentists and periodontologists must take into consideration the effect of dental anxiety on oral self-care, dental attendance practices, and periodontal health to ensure holistic dental healthcare awareness, utilization, and delivery. The immunosuppresion in HIV patients makes them highly susceptible to microbial infections. The aim of the study was to establish whether HIV stage (as depicted by CD4+ T lymphocyte counts) could independently be associated with periodontal status (as revealed by the measurement of clinical indices). Methods One hundred and twenty HIV-infected patients attending an infectious diseases clinic in the Western Cape, South Africa were included in the study. The periodontal clinical indices such as plaque index, gingival index, pocket probing depth and clinical attachment levels were measured on the mesial aspect of the six Ramfjord teeth. The CD4 + T cell counts were taken from the patients' medical records and patients' HIV stage determined and grouped according to their CD4+ T cell counts into A ( <200 cells /mm3 ), B ( 200-500 cells /mm3 ) and C (>500 cells /mm3). Results The mean age of 120 HIV-positive patients was 33.25 years and the mean CD4 + T cell count was 293.43cells/mm3. The probing depth and clinical attachment loss were found to be significantly associated with the total CD4 + T cell counts but not with HIV stage. Significant correlations were found between age and all clinical indices except for clinical attachment loss. No correlation was found between age and HIV stage of the patients. The use of antiretroviral therapy was significantly associated with probing depth and clinical attachment loss, but not with plaque nor gingival index. Significant associations were observed between smoking and all of the clinical indices except for the gingival index. A significant association was observed between the use of interdental aids and all the clinical indices except for probing depth, while brushing was significantly associated with plaque index only. CD4 + T cell counts were significantly associated with brushing frequency (p = 0.0190) and the use of interdental aids (p = 0.0170). Conclusion The findings of this study conclude that HIV stage, ART and age are not independent risk factors for changes in the periodontal status of HIV-positive subjects but rather that smoking and oral hygiene habits determine their susceptibility to disease. Aim: To identify the oral health behavior and factors influencing the selection of oral hygiene products by the adolescent tobacco consumers in Ranchi district, Jharkhand. This study will also attempt to identify the factors related to the selection of toothbrushes for oral hygiene maintenance., Materials and Methods: A total of 800 adolescent tobacco consumers were selected from Ranchi district. A self-administered questionnaire collected information on the oral health behavior and factors influencing the selection of oral cleansing aids. Logistic regression analysis was performed., Results: Toothbrush (83.0%) and toothpaste (78.0%) were the most common oral cleansing aids. Media played an important role in the selection of toothbrushes and toothpaste. The dental visit (15.0%) for preventive dental care was reported to be less. The individuals belonging to upper class (OR = 2.8, p value < 0.001*), of nontribal origin (OR = 3.21, p value < 0.001*, and residing in urban areas (OR = 5.6, p value < 0.0001*) were more likely to use a toothbrush., Conclusion: The consumption of tobacco should be discouraged. Promotion of oral cleansing aids and interdental aids should be carried out using support from media., Clinical Significance: The oral health behavior of adolescents needs to be improved. The adolescents should be promoted to quit tobacco, and education and counseling should be provided to them for the oral health promotion.
