In recent years, there has been a growing focus on innovation research, particularly in the manufacturing and information technology sectors in the US and Europe. However, the disruptions caused by the recent pandemic called for more innovations, especially in the education industry. Innovation is viewed as an outcome of a set of various drivers. This study explored faculty perspectives on the drivers of innovation that can transform the curriculum into an interdisciplinary model to promote sustainability in education. Additionally, it examined the relationship between these drivers and the outcome of innovation, particularly at the process level. An explanatory sequential mixed‐method approach was employed to collect quantitative and qualitative data from a purposeful sample of 60 faculty members at one federal higher education institution in the United Arab Emirates. Findings indicated that while there is a correlation between the drivers and process of innovation and sustainability in education, other factors played a more significant role in facilitating this transformation. Empowering faculty members and involving them in the process of transformation, connecting them with the institutional vision and mission for innovation, fostering a clear understanding of the value of the transformation, providing faculty with continuous professional learning and development opportunities to promote the use of innovative pedagogical methods, are among the key factors. Cancers rely on multiple, heterogeneous processes at different scales, pertaining to many biomedical fields. Therefore, understanding cancer is necessarily an interdisciplinary task that requires placing specialised experimental and clinical research into a broader conceptual, theoretical, and methodological framework. Without such a framework, oncology will collect piecemeal results, with scant dialogue between the different scientific communities studying cancer. We argue that one important way forward in service of a more successful dialogue is through greater integration of applied sciences (experimental and clinical) with conceptual and theoretical approaches, informed by philosophical methods. By way of illustration, we explore six central themes: (i) the role of mutations in cancer; (ii) the clonal evolution of cancer cells; (iii) the relationship between cancer and multicellularity; (iv) the tumour microenvironment; (v) the immune system; and (vi) stem cells. In each case, we examine open questions in the scientific literature through a philosophical methodology and show the benefit of such a synergy for the scientific and medical understanding of cancer.

Introduction. Mobilization of the resource potential of academic staff is a key task of university management. The development of management approaches to its solution should be preceded by a comprehensive study of both the academic staff resources and management practices. The possibilities of research are provided by an interdisciplinary theoretical and methodological framework. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the possibilities of developing interdisciplinary foundations for the study of the mobilization of the academic staff resource potential and the prospects for empirical study. Materials and Methods. The theoretico-methodological nature of the article required the use of methods for generalizing and systematizing the provisions of interdisciplinary and disciplinary approaches and theories that have been developed by social and humanitarian science. The main directions for the exploration of the problem of academic staff resource potential in modern socio-humanitarian knowledge have been identified through the method of systematic analysis of literature. Results. The main result of the research is the substantiation of the theoretical and methodological framework for an interdisciplinary study of the mobilization of the academic staff resources. This justification is based on the “revision” of theoretical and methodological provisions of theories of education. The basic interdisciplinary theories are the theories of adult continuing education, professional development and education, non-cognitive human capital, social networks, scientific and educational knowledge. Community-based, resource-based, institutional, normative, and communicative approaches are in demand. The provisions of these theories and approaches are adapted to the subject of the study. An important result of the research is the substantiation of the interdisciplinary synthesis in the practices of university management. Discussion and Conclusion. The prospects for using the interdisciplinary framework in an empirical study dealing with evaluation and activation of academic staff resources are shown. The practical significance of the results lies in the development of a model of mobilization management of the academic staff resources.

Sally Shuttleworth is Professor of English and former Head of the Humanities Division at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA). In 2021, she was included in The Queens's Birthday Honours List and became a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). She has published extensively on the interrelated study of Victorian literature and science, especially medicine and public health, including The Mind of the Child: Child Development in Literature, Science and Medicine, 1840-1900 (2020) and Anxious Times: Medicine and Modernity in Nineteenth-Century Britain (2019). The aim of this research is to identify the challenges faced by the faculty members at Tabuk University in conducting interdisciplinary research from their perspective (proposed perception). To achieve the research objectives، the researcher used the descriptive survey method and designed a questionnaire consisting of 24 items distributed across two dimensions: challenges of conducting interdisciplinary research and developmental suggestions to enhance the process of interdisciplinary research. The research was applied to a random sample of 240 faculty members at Tabuk University. The research findings revealed several important results. The challenges faced by the faculty members at Tabuk University in conducting interdisciplinary research، from their perspective، were found to be very significant. The major challenges included the scarcity of research that addressed interdisciplinary topics، the limited availability of sources and scientific literature on interdisciplinary research، and the lack of awareness programs to promote a culture of interdisciplinary research in the university environment. On the other hand، the least challenging aspect was the difficulty of finding links between different disciplines. Furthermore، the results indicated a high level of agreement among the faculty members regarding the proposed developmental suggestions to enhance the process of interdisciplinary research at Tabuk University. The field of Patristics, or early Christian and Mediaeval Studies, traditionally works along the lines of historical and literary criticism. But this method is not always useful, especially when it comes to complex objects and circumstances. No wonder the current trend of replacing it, more often than not, by interdisciplinary frameworks. The article begins accordingly by reviewing three interdisciplinary frameworks, namely, the "socio-historical method", "Deep Time", and archaeological theorist Roland Fletcher's "transitions", highlighting their suitability for a comprehensive approach to Patristic cosmology. Here, cosmology should not be taken in the narrow sense of contemporary science. It means both a way of representing reality—a worldview—and a way of inhabiting the world. The present article analyses the evolution of the early Christian and mediaeval perception of the environment and the cosmos in Greek sources, pointing to successive transitions from apprehension (cosmophobia) to a keen interest in understanding nature to the thought that holiness represents a universe-(re)making agency. It addresses relevant historical and social circumstances, but proposes that the above transitions were triggered by internal or existential factors as well, and not only external, thus complementing Fletcher's outline, which focuses upon external catalysts, such as economy and technology. Business schools are crucial to integrating sustainable development into management thought and practices, thereby promoting a paradigm shift toward responsible management education. Despite many business schools pledging to adopt the United Nations' Principles for Responsible Management Education, they have been criticized for failing to develop change agents toward sustainability. To fill this gap, this paper demonstrates how interdisciplinarity can be connected to responsible management education through critical and instrumental perspectives. To this end, we apply an interdisciplinarity model to 37 Principles for Responsible Management Education Schools' Reports, using content analysis, text‐mining, and network theory tools. As a result, our findings suggest: (i) a taxonomy of critical and instrumental interdisciplinary studies and (ii) a framework of Principles for Responsible Management Education schools engaged in critical and instrumental interdisciplinarity. The framework we develop can serve as a diagnostic and prognostic tool for assessing how interdisciplinary can improve responsible management education in business schools. This paper explores the ways that intricate wordplay informs the satires of two writers: Hama Tuma from Ethiopia and Lucian from Syria. In Tuma's "The Case of the Traitorous Alphabet" and Lucian's Trial of the Consonants , characters enact instances of doublespeak (expressing a literal and hidden statement simultaneously) that reverberate within and outside of the satirical realm. This research note provides an overview of Radicalisation Studies as an emerging interdisciplinary field aimed at developing more holistic understandings of how and why individuals and groups turn to extreme ideologies and political violence. It traces the evolution of radicalisation research across core social science disciplines, including sociology, psychology, anthropology, and political science. While this burgeoning scholarship has expanded knowledge, persistent gaps remain due to studying radicalisation in disciplinary silos. To address this fragmentation, the research note proposes an integrated Radicalisation Studies approach grounded in critical social theory and reflexivity. This paradigm synthesises concepts and mechanisms from across disciplines to investigate the complex interplay between individual vulnerabilities, group dynamics, and broader socio‐political contexts in generating radicalisation. The note outlines theoretical foundations, guiding research questions, and methodological strategies for this new field focused on mixed‐methods, multi‐level analysis. Radicalisation Studies holds promise for advancing theoretical integration, contextualised explanations, critical perspectives on radicalisation discourse, and evidence‐based preventative policies. While challenges remain in institutionalising this emerging field, Radicalisation Studies has the potential to steer research towards greater interdisciplinarity and the nuanced understandings necessary to elucidate this complex phenomenon. From a critical race perspective and the narrative view of one faculty member, this paper discusses some teaching practices implemented for undergraduate Black students who attend a Hispanic-serving institution. The findings of this work offer Black-Centered Active Instruction (BCAI) as a pedagogy to engage the students. BCAI centers the specific needs of Black students who are within the minority, pushes for active engagement with Black students both in and out of the classroom, and encourages the creation of safe Black spaces for undergraduate students. The implication of this work encourages educators to consider the history of antiblackness within American culture, primarily minority spaces, and apply this to similar practices in higher education. Instructor: Lincoln CushingTerm: Summer 2022Course #: HUM C132 / ENVDES C132Why Read This Case Study?Undergraduates often do not carry out independent archival research until they take upper-division courses, if at all. What would be the impact of introducing incoming freshmen, particularly students who are the first in their families to attend college, to the joys and challenges of handling archival documents?In Archiving as Social Justice Practice, professional archivist Lincoln Cushing taught students not just to use archives but to help create them. Following field trips to the storied archives of the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley as well as to community-based archives, students helped process materials that became part of the Freedom Archives, a long-established grassroots archive in Berkeley. They handled, selected, and digitized historic protest posters and attached metadata, learning important concepts about the practice of history in the process.The course was supported by Future Histories Lab and offered as part of the Summer Bridge program, which welcomes students from diverse backgrounds, including students of color, low-income, and first-generation students to the college experience in the summer before their freshman fall semester. In their reflections offered in this case study, students said the experience changed the course of their undergraduate careers.Students who were not even sure they were allowed inside the Bancroft gained the confidence to feel that university resources were theirs. STEM-oriented students gained an understanding of the importance of the humanities; humanities students began to understand history as a discipline; and students oriented toward activism connected their concerns for the future with an appreciation for the need to understand the past.

Background The global coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic created a profound disruption to the delivery of planned scientific research with unknown immediate and potentially longer-term impacts. Aims We explored researchers' experiences of the impact of the pandemic on the continued development and delivery of research into work and health, and on research infrastructure in this field. Methods A cross-sectional study. Results Thirty-three questionnaires were completed, representing a response rate of 15%. Sixty-one per cent of respondents were female, the majority (78%) had over 11 years of research experience and 76% worked mainly in academia. Most respondents (88%) were able to progress with research during the pandemic. A small proportion (4%) had studies paused or suspended due to the pandemic, while a larger proportion (19%) had research staff redeployed to assist with other studies or furloughed. Respondents described a range of emerging practical and logistical issues for research into work and health during the pandemic. Some benefited from increased opportunities to collaborate on new multidisciplinary studies, opportunities to engage participants in work and health research, and more flexible and inclusive work practices. Others experienced challenges that had an adverse impact, such as hampering research delivery (e.g. barriers to participant screening and intervention delivery), poor (home) working environments, reduced team cohesion and isolation. A range of future priorities for research was highlighted. Objective: The aim was to design a setting that promotes privacy of conversations between patients and nurses in hospital hallways, as well as to explore user perspectives on the specially designed hospital space, in addition to the potential effect on a conversation. Background: Many hospitals in Denmark face challenges with outdated infrastructure and lack of facilities creating a welcoming atmosphere for patients and users. Methods: A design thinking process guided the development of nature-inspired seating. The real-scale prototypes were evaluated in semi-structured interviews for perspectives from cancer patients (n = 10) and nurses (n = 8). Results: The aesthetic environment of these spaces improved conversations between patients and nurses, fostering a more conducive atmosphere for communication. These spaces effectively contrasted the clinical hospital setting, signalling a more welcoming environment. Teaching students to think in complex systems and design is presumably intricate, creative, and nonlinear. However, due to the overwhelming number of standardized tools and frameworks, the process sometimes ends up being procedural and deductive. Conformity to rigid procedures loses the intention of creative problem-solving towards tackling wicked problems. This paper proposes a project-based approach to instill the mindsets for those who aspire to be design and systems thinkers through a first-year engineering course. Using the ADDIE model, the instructional design was implemented in three modules focusing on design, systems, and integration for real-world applications. The instructional design was evaluated via course feedback surveys and focus-group interviews. Students indicated positive impacts on creative mindsets, habits of systems thinkers, and interdisciplinary awareness. However, negative comments about the course arrangement such as heavy workload and disconnection between topics were identified. Suggestions from students, challenges faced by the instructors, and recommended practices are discussed. In times of increasing need to reform higher education due to digitization and artificial intelligence, this study provides a timely investigation of a new project-based and mindset-focused pedagogy in design and systems thinking education. In essence, Islam is a religion that regulates not only the faith and worship dimension of human life, but also every area of social relations and bases it on morality. When we consider that these principles of Islam started with the history of humanity, it can be thought that the order in question affects every environment where human beings are present. At the beginning of these areas that we are subjected to evaluation in this study; sports and sportive activities. As a matter of fact, the human characteristics that sports and Islam want to build are common. In particular, the existence of concepts such as fair play, leadership, teamwork, respect and morality, which are common in today's sports world, reveals that sports is a platform where moral values are prioritized, as opposed to aiming only to develop physical skills or to create a competitive environment. In addition to this, sporting activities that contribute to character development prepare the ground for people to cope with difficulties, to be patient and most importantly to have self-discipline. In this respect, it reflects the human profile targeted by Islam in social relations. In this study, the importance of sportive activities in the Prophet's era and their reflections on today's world will be discussed. Unlike the existing studies in our literature on this subject, rather than revealing the narrations about the sports branches that the Messenger of Allah himself did or encouraged, the evaluation of the narrations in question with the experts of the field of sports sciences and their place in today's sports world will be emphasized. It is aimed to provide a new perspective on this issue, which concerns the common field of Siyar, Islamic history and sports sciences, not from a single aspect, but by bringing together different perspectives as interdisciplinary and ensuring its suitability to the problems of today's sports world. In this respect, we believe that interdisciplinary studies can directly contribute to the development of new theories and the speed of scientific progress. However, since we will evaluate the sportive activities in Islamic history within the cultural and social context of that period, our study in question can contribute to the historical development of sports in the Islamic world, especially in terms of better understanding of Islamic history and sports trends. Because such studies reveal how sport was used as a social and cultural tool in Islamic history and how historical perspectives can contribute to sports sciences. In addition, interdisciplinary studies between Islamic history and sports sciences can enrich both the fields of history and sports science. Such studies can help us better understand the past and present impact of sport in the Islamic world and allow us to evaluate the cultural, social and health-related aspects of sport from a broader perspective. Because in the historical process of Islam, it has always been in interaction with sports in terms of both protecting physical health and prioritizing more moderate and measured behaviors in one's life. As a matter of fact, it is known that the Prophet constantly encouraged the protection of physical health. However, it is known that sports have also been of great importance in terms of war training throughout Islamic history. Because sports were seen as a way to develop war skills such as swimming, athletics, archery, swordplay, riding and jumping. In addition, sports also contributed to the strengthening of religious community consciousness due to the importance of unity, solidarity and solidarity as a team. However, it should be noted that the types and forms of practice of sports in the Prophet's time and the present-day sports world may differ according to the cultural and regional context of the person in the world of sports, which we will discuss in this study. The acceptance of ethical literary criticism in Japan has gone through three stages: initial period, high period and falling period. The main reason for its decline lies in the prevalent misunderstanding in Japanese academia, simply equating ethical literary criticism with Chinese traditional ethical criticism or moral criticism. To dispel misunderstandings and deepen Japanese scholars' understanding of ethical literary criticism, it is necessary to emphasize the interdisciplinary characteristic of ethical literary criticism within the academic community in Japan. Taking into account the characteristics of Japanese literature and the research tradition of Japanese academia, this paper suggests three interdisciplinary approaches: 1) the interdisciplinary path of literature and psychology, which enjoys a broad research base in Japan; 2) the interdisciplinary path of literature and brain science, an area that has not gained substantial research in Japan; 3) the interdisciplinary path of literature and science and technology with significant development prospects. In this paper, a distinction is first made between environmental, sustainable, and green chemistry; the last two are then examined in relation to the more general problem of environmental education. A brief historical digression on the Science, Technology, and Society movement attempts to dissect reasons why chemistry is seen by the general public as a problem, not as a decisive resource for the realization of the ecological transition. Although sustainable and green chemistry can be decisive in overcoming the insularity of chemical disciplines in high school, it is not well-embedded in educational practices. This situation is slowly changing thanks to the implementations of systems thinking in teaching practice, showing interconnections between the molecular world and sustainability. Historical and epistemological studies provide an all-encompassing framework for the relationship between chemistry and the environment in a broad sense, giving a solid foundation for educational projects. Specific operational goals can help chemical educators in supporting real learning, as well as an examination of the fundamental axes of sustainable and green chemistry, according to the criteria of Scientific and Technological Literacy. Finally, the results of some research carried out in secondary school are presented. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of the interdisciplinary-systemic approach in teaching chemistry as well as in guiding future green careers and reducing the gender gap, preparing high school students in the best possible way to face the challenges of an increasingly interconnected and complex world.

Both early social psychologists and the modern, interdisciplinary scientific community have advocated for diverse team science. We echo this call and describe three common pitfalls of solo science illustrated by the target article. We discuss how a collaborative and inclusive approach to science can both help researchers avoid these pitfalls and pave the way for more rigorous and relevant research.

BackgroundWe conducted a community-based participatory environmental health study in three towns: two in the heart of Marseille's industrial zone (Fos-sur-Mer and Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône), and one on the periphery located about 30 km away (Saint-Martin-de-Crau).MethodsWe first conducted a cross-sectional survey of a random sample of residents in each of the three towns. We asked study participants to self-report a wide variety of health issues (Port-Saint-Louis: n = 272, Fos-sur-Mer: n = 543, Saint-Martin-de-Crau: n = 439). We then conducted focus groups with residents and other stakeholders to share preliminary data in order to propose areas of reflection and collaboratively produce contextually-situated knowledge of their health and environment. We directly standardized the prevalences (by age and gender) to the French metropolitan population to make our results more comparable.ResultsStudy participants who lived closer to the core industrial zone (residents of Fos-sur-Mer and Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhone) had higher prevalences of eye irritation, nose and throat problems, chronic skin problems and headaches than people who lived further away (residents of Saint-Martin-de-Crau). Residents also offered diverse qualitative insights about their environment and health experiences.DiscussionWe observed elevated prevalences of diseases that affected residents across the industrial zone (Fos-sur-Mer and Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône) compared to those living outside (Saint-Martin-de-Crau), and qualitative evidence of how residents made sense of their health experiences strengthening an understanding of their own empirical observations which helps to produce knowledge about health in an industrial context. The results of the workshops show an important benefit from the co-production of local knowledge.ConclusionWe encourage future researchers to do in-depth, community-based research to comprehensively describe the health of residents in other heavily polluted zones, product local knowledge and to help identify policy solutions, engender trust among the local people, and identify opportunities for intervention.

This study aims to explore the multifaceted aesthetic, social and cultural metaphors, and implications behind the portrayal of the goddess in Gu Kaizhi's (顾恺之, 344–406CE) handscroll painting entitled Nymph of the Luo River (Luo Shen Fu Tu 洛神赋图) in the field of iconographic and spatial studies. The paper argues that the artist's portrayal of the female figure in a revolutionary style, along with his adventurous emphasis on the close relationship between characters and nature, is more visually appealing compared to the established pictorial paradigm and symbolic significance assigned to the female figure by painters of the Han Dynasty (202BCE–9CE, 25–220CE). However, despite the artistic breakthroughs mentioned above, Gu neither fully challenges the hegemony of the metaphorical social order in paintings nor the long-standing oppressed status of women from previous dynasties. Thus, although the goddess of Luo appears to have achieved gender and physical liberation within the confined "heterotopia" space, the tense pictorial relationships create an iconological paradox, which confirms the order of patriarchal norms and the visualised framework of masculine cultures.
