ION GNSS + 2022, Denver, ETATS-UNIS, 21-/09/2022 - 23/09/2022; In safety-critical applications, the vulnerability of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) to radio frequency interferences (RFIs) is a major concern. The development of a fail-safe and robust localization system now necessarily requires detection and mitigation of such interferences, which has increased with the proliferation of wireless systems and easy access to personal privacy devices (PPD) also known as jammers. Moreover, the advent of software-defined radio (SDR) permitting the transmission of customized and more complex signals has further complicated this problem. This paper provides an in-depth comparison of interference mitigation techniques at multiple levels primarily focusing on the safety perspective at the position level. For this purpose, the classical adaptive notch filter (ANF) and the wavelet packet decomposition method are applied to mitigate the effects of interference. This comparative study aims to assess the performance of these mitigation techniques at multiple levels (frequency estimation, acquisition, tracking and position). However, the main goal for the final user is to study the impact on key performance indicators (KPIs) such as accuracy, availability, and safety. Furthermore, two cases are considered: 1): interference in the absence of any mitigation strategy and after applying interference mitigation technique at the pre-correlation level. The complete study is presented for two different types of time-varying continuous wave (CW) interferenc.e signals namely frequency hopping and the chirp signal.

International audience; Wireless connections are more and more used in different applications and in public areas for services to consumers but also for handling (sometimes) sensitive communications (for instance in railway systems or for remote video monitoring systems). Such systems can have to face different kind of attacks that target the behind service. Our work aims to detect, as soon as possible and online, attacks that can occur on wireless networks, to be able to react very quickly. In this paper, we present some results of data analysis methods, on Wi-Fi signals, to differentiate the ones with attacks from the ones without. This study focuses on low power jamming attacks with a slight or even no impact on Wi-Fi communications. This is more challenging than detecting high power jamming attacks which have already been addressed in the literature. Being able to detect a low impact attack is a crucial issue in a global security strategy, making it possible to launch countermeasures before the interruption of the communication. The Wi-Fi bands are also in the ISM frequencies, making the environment complicated to analyze. Clustering methods such as Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering are used to identify some clusters and then to map them to the real classes (with or without attacks). A deep analysis of the clusters obtained in a dataset acquired in uncontrolled conditions is carried out. This is done in order to understand what is responsible of the clustering assignment of the different points and to extract the clusters which can be used to design a detection attack strategy.

ION ITM 2022 - International Technical Meeting of Institute of Navigation, Long Beach, CA, ETATS-UNIS, 25-/01/2022 - 27/01/2022; Localization function for an advanced intelligent transport system, such as an autonomous vehicle, must ensure various operational requirements such as safety, accuracy, availability and continuity of service, anytime, anywhere, at a reasonable cost. Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) have many advantages insofar as they present the most accessible technology to the user to determine its position with a certain accuracy without prior knowledge. However, in an environment where signal reception may not be optimal especially due to phenomena such as satellite blockage, multipath, intentional or unintentional interferences and spoofing, it becomes very challenging to meet all these requirements, especially those related to operational safety. The latter is measured by evaluating the integrity of the localization function. It can be evaluated through a Protection Level, which is calculated by the receiver to self-monitor its integrity, also called RAIM (Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring). In the literature, integrity in presence of multipath and NLOS has been extensively investigated [1] as well interference detection and mitigation solutions [2]. However, the impact of interference presence and mitigation on integrity monitoring is not deeply addressed yet. In this study, we evaluate some key performance indicators (KPI's) for GNSS users. These indicators will be evaluated for three different cases; 1) when no interference is applied and clean GNSS signals are processed. 2) In the presence of interference but without any mitigation technique. 3) After applying a mitigation technique at the pre-correlation level to filter the interference signal. The mitigation technique relies on state-of-the-art Notch filters provided by a Septentrio receiver. The interference signals are generated in the laboratory to produce disturbances in the GNSS band. Thus, and thanks to the a priori knowledge of the true position, it is possible to establish the Stanford diagrams for these cases. A deep analysis of performance in the presence and absence of interferences and in the presence and absence of a mitigation technique allows the first conclusions to be drawn on the evolution of accuracy, availability and operational safety indicators. The preliminary results reveal the importance of considering, from the design phase of the localization function, the possibility of dealing with this phenomenon, in particular in the measurement weighting model to use for enhanced performance.

In these situations, the power may rapidly switch between its peak value and the equipment noise floor. As a consequence, instantaneous values obtained with a marker do not faithfully represent the actual signal power. In this paper, we propose a methodology to overcome such an issue, based on the post-processing of oscilloscope measurements. One of the interest is to use IoT communication solutions in order to centralize the data measured by the different sensors distributed everywhere along the railway infrastructures and on board the trains. In this perspective, different communication protocols could be employed. This paper deals specifically with the LoRa communication protocol and analyses its susceptibility in the presence of railway electromagnetic interferences. This paper presents a susceptibility analysis of the LoRa communications in the presence of transient EM interferences representative of the electromagnetic interferences produced by the sliding catenary-pantograph contact.

Ils sont souvent utilisés pour accéder à des services ou assurer des fonctions opérationnelles à distance. Cependant, ces réseaux Wi-Fi peuvent être vulnérables et utilisés par des personnes malintentionnées pour perturber les services. Des stratégies de défense doivent être développées pour éviter les abus sur ces réseaux et intercepter les personnes malveillantes. Dans ce contexte, le projet GLOCAT vise à rechercher des moyens de détecter et géo-localiser des sources d'attaque envers ces réseaux de communication sans fil. L'approche repose sur l'analyse continue des signaux électromagnétiques (EM) reçus par une antenne de surveillance et un récepteur collectant les distributions spectrales. Les premiers travaux présentés dans cet article visent à développer un protocole de classification pour distinguer si une source de brouillage intentionnel se situe dans le même espace intérieur que le réseau de communication ou à l'extérieur de l'infrastructure dans laquelle est établie la communication.

International audience; The enlargement of the cracks outside the permitted dimension is one of the main causes for the reduction of service life of Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures. Cracks can develop due to many causes such as dynamic or static load. When tensile stress exceeds the tensile strength of RC, cracks appear. Traditional techniques have limitations in early stage damage detection and localisation, especially on large-scale structures. The ultrasonic Coda Wave Interferometry (CWI) method using diffuse waves is one of the most promising methods to detect subtle changes in heterogeneous materials, such as concrete. In this paper, the assessment of the CWI method applied for multiple cracks opening detection on two specimens based on four-point bending test is presented. Both beams were monitored using a limited number of embedded Ultrasonic (US) transducers as well as other transducers and techniques (e.g., Digital Image Correlation (DIC), LVDT sensors, strain gauges, and Fiber Optics Sensor (FOS)). Results show that strain change and crack formation are successfully and efficiently detected by CWI method even earlier than by the other techniques. The CWI technique using embedded US transducers is undoubtedly a feasible, efficient, and promising method for long-term monitoring on real infrastructure.

Commercial jammers are often characterized by the frequency bands that they cover. The jamming signal is generally a frequency-sweeping signal which sweeps quickly and periodically the frequency band, with a fixed sweep period (SP). According to the jammer model, the frequency band, the power and the sweep period can be different. In this communication, we study the potential impact of a jamming signal according to its power and its sweep period in order to analyse the disturbing mechanisms. The quality of the LTE uplink is analyzed through the measurements of three parameters: Error Vector Magnitude (EVM), Occupied BandWidth (OBW) and Adjacent Channel Leakage-power Ratio (ACLR).

GRETSI 2019, 27ème Colloque francophone de traitement du signal et des images, Lille, FRANCE, 26-/08/2019 - 29/08/2019; Dans ce travail, nous avons évalué les performances d'un algorithme de classification adaptative et en ligne (SAKM auto-adaptatif Kernel Machine) pour la reconnaissance automatique et en ligne d'attaques sur des communications Wi-Fi (protocole 802.11n). Les résultats présentés ici font partie d'un projet plus vaste portant sur la surveillance du système sans fil. Les ondes radio sont faciles à écouter. En raison de l'évolution rapide des attaques disponibles, l'utilisation de l'algorithme d'apprentissage ne peut pas couvrir toutes les configurations. Le clustering en ligne construit des modèles évolutifs sans connaissance des différents cas à différencier. Il est donc bien adapté à ce type de problématique. Basé sur les méthodes de noyau SVM, l'algorithme SAKM utilise une procédure d'apprentissage adaptatif rapide pour prendre en compte les variations dans le temps.

Journée thématique "Sécurité des systèmes électroniques et communicants" du GDR ondes, Paris, FRANCE, 21-/05/2019 - 21/05/2019; Dans de nombreux domaines, les réseaux de communication ou informatiques comportent à la fois des sections filaires et sans fil. Ici, on s'intéresse à la partie sans fil qui peut être victime d'attaques ciblées, visant du déni de service en empêchant la bonne réception des signaux de communication ou bien des attaques « man-in-the-loop » visant à intercepter des informations. Dans cette communication, nous présentons des travaux qui se basent sur l'analyse de l'activité électromagnétique pour détecter de telles attaques sur un réseau Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11n. L'approche repose sur l'analyse de données spectrales par technique de classification.

According to the communication system which is affected, the consequences can be more or less critical. In this paper, we propose to develop an algorithm which could be implemented at the reception stage of a communication terminal in order to detect the presence of jamming signals. The work is performed on Wi-Fi communication signals and demonstrates the necessity to have a specific signal processing at the reception stage to be able to detect the presence of jamming signals.

These communicationsystems have to take into account electromagnetic (EM) interferences present in the railway environment in the 2 GHz frequency band since this is a frequency band in which LTE and Wi-Fi operate. This paper presents a series of tests that were carried out to analyze the impact of measurement methods over the characterization of transient electromagnetic (EM) interferences above 2 GHz in a railway environment. Experimental results from two different setups are analyzed in the time and frequency domains.

En particulier, les services offerts à bord des trains doivent apporter un bon niveau de confort aux passagers. Dans ce contexte, les opérateurs veulent permettre un accès à internet de qualité à bord des trains, qui permettrait aux passagers d'optimiser le temps passé à bord des trains. Le réseau 4G offre une possibilité d'accès à internet. Cependant, le transport ferroviaire étant un transport de masse, le nombre de passagers limite les possibilités d'accès à internet par cette technologie. Ainsi, la solution envisagée est une connexion 4G entre le sol et le train puis un transfert par un point d'accès WiFi à bord des voitures. Cependant, les antennes 4G qui seraient situées en toiture des trains pourraient recevoir les interférences produites par le contact caténaire-pantographe. Ainsi, cet article propose d'étudier la susceptibilité de ces communications 4G aux interférences transitoires produites par ce contact glissant.

Generally, in railway networks, dissipated energy-and its consequences in terms of noise, ballast attrition, electromagnetic interference, etc-is considered a nuisance generated by this means of transport. Therefore, most studies are carried out with the aim of reducing it. This paper takes the opposite view and considers the particular case of the irreducible electromagnetic interference generated along an electrified line, in order to propose new applications beneficial to railway operations. At a selected representative location, wideband (ranging from 10 kHz to 1 GHz) electromagnetic field measurements are performed successively during, and not during, high speed train passages. We deduce two potential applications of these unintentional signals. At low frequency, the first proposal considers energy harvesting using the received electromagnetic interference as the source. This received energy can be converted and used to DC feed low consumption sensors to be installed along the railway infrastructure. These sensors participate in monitoring infrastructure health and in making it more resilient to internal and external stresses. At higher frequencies, for the second proposal, radiation from the catenary line and train pantograph is specifically examined at a carefully selected sub-band. The results are also studied following a time-frequency analysis, to introduce a new nondestructive inspection method of the sliding contact between the catenary line and the train pantograph. Ultimately, this technique could offer a new means of monitoring the health of both the catenary line and the pantograph.; Dans les réseaux ferroviaires, l'énergie dissipée - et ses conséquences en termes de bruit, d'interférences électromagnétiques, etc. - est considérée comme une nuisance générée par ce moyen de transport. Par conséquent, la plupart des études sont menées dans le but de les réduire. Cet article prend le contre-pied et considère le cas particulier de l'interférence électromagnétique irréductible générée le long d'une ligne électrifiée, afin de proposer de nouvelles applications bénéfiques aux opérations ferroviaires. A un emplacement représentatif sélectionné, des mesures de champ électromagnétique à large bande (allant de 10 kHz à 1 GHz) sont effectuées successivement pendant les passages de trains à grande vitesse. Nous envisagons deux applications potentielles de ces signaux involontaires. À basse fréquence, la première proposition considère la collecte d'énergie en utilisant l'interférence électromagnétique reçue comme source. Cette énergie reçue peut être convertie et utilisée pour alimenter en DC des capteurs de faible consommation à installer le long de l'infrastructure ferroviaire. Ces capteurs participent à la surveillance de la santé de l'infrastructure et à la rendre plus résistante aux contraintes internes et externes. À des fréquences plus élevées, pour la deuxième proposition, le rayonnement de la ligne caténaire et du pantographe de train est spécifiquement examiné dans une sous-bande soigneusement sélectionnée. Les résultats sont également étudiés à la suite d'une analyse temps-fréquence, pour introduire une nouvelle méthode d'inspection non destructive du contact glissant entre la ligne caténaire et le pantographe du train. En fin de compte, cette technique pourrait offrir un nouveau moyen de surveiller la santé de la ligne caténaire et du pantographe.

URSI GASS 2017 - 32nd International Union of Radio Science General Assembly & Scientific Symposium, Montreal, CANADA, 19-/08/2017 - 26/08/2017; Pour des raisons de fiabilité et de sécurité, les systèmes de signalisation dans le domaine ferroviaire évoluent en permanence. Aujourd'hui, en Europe, le GSM-R est utilisé dans le cadre du système européen de gestion du trafic ferroviaire (ERTMS) et la transmission des informations de signalisation est progressivement assurée par le GSM-R. Avec l'évolution des systèmes de télécommunication, de nouvelles technologies utilisant des techniques OFDM, telles que LTE, pourraient être exploitées pour les applications ferroviaires. Cependant, sachant que l'environnement électromagnétique du chemin de fer est très hostile et riche en interférences électromagnétiques, des études doivent être menées pour anticiper les problèmes de CEM qui pourraient avoir une incidence sur les performances LTE en environnement ferroviaire. Dans cet article, nous proposons une étude comparative entre les communications GSMR et LTE en présence d'interférences électromagnétiques transitoires, fréquemment présentes sur les trains.

As many other industrial environments, the railway electromagnetic environment is characterized by a large number of electromagnetic signals and disturbances. Among these, transient signals, with high energy level and wide frequency spectrum, represent an important threat to different signaling subsystems. In this paper, a new methodology dedicated to the detection and the characterization of the transient disturbances is presented. Based on a flexible and adjustable time-frequency analysis, this methodology is used to evaluate the impact of transient disturbances on a ground-to-train radio communication. A test bench was developed in order to validate the results of this evaluation.; Comme beaucoup d'autres environnements industriels, l'environnement électromagnétique ferroviaire est caractérisé par un grand nombre de signaux électromagnétiques et de perturbations. Parmi ceux-ci, les signaux transitoires, avec un niveau d'énergie élevé et un large spectre de fréquence, représentent une menace importante pour différents sous-systèmes de signalisation. Dans cet article, une nouvelle méthodologie dédiée à la détection et à la caractérisation des perturbations transitoires est présentée. Basée sur une analyse temps-fréquence flexible et ajustable, cette méthodologie permet d'évaluer l'impact des perturbations transitoires sur une communication radio sol-train. Un banc d'essai a été développé afin d'évaluer les résultats de cette méthode.

This paper presents an analysis of the impact of intentional electromagnetic (EM) interferences on the performance of Wi-Fi communications. The goal is to analyze the susceptibility of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) signals and to understand how certain parameters of the interference signal act on the degradation of the communication, taking into account the signal processing performed at the reception stage of the communication system. We analyze the relationship between the parameters of the interference and the signal processing at the reception. This study is a contribution for agile communication solutions that would have the ability to reconfigure the signal processing in order to reduce the impact of interference signals. The scenario corresponds to an IEEE 802.11nwireless network affected by a frequency-sweeping interference signal. The interference signal sweeps over a given frequency band, and different sweep periods and interference to signal power ratios are applied. A set of measurements was performed to evaluate the performance of the communication network in the presence of different EM interferences. Bit rate measurements are presented and the impact of the interference characteristics on communication quality is analyzed, by highlighting the effect of the signal processing performed by the OFDM receiver.; Cet article présente une analyse de l'impact des interférences électromagnétiques intentionnelles (IEMI) sur la performance des communications Wi-Fi. L'objectif est d'analyser la susceptibilité des signaux de OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex ) et de comprendre comment certains paramètres du signal d'interférence agissent sur la dégradation de la communication, en tenant compte du traitement du signal qui intervient à la réception du système de communication. Nous analysons la relation entre les paramètres du signal d'interférence et ceux du traitement du signal appliqué à la réception. Cette étude est une contribution pour les solutions de communication agiles qui pourraient être en mesure de reconfigurer le traitement du signal afin de réduire l'impact des signaux d'interférence. Le scénario correspond à un réseau sans fil IEEE 802.11n corrompu par un signal d'interférence à balayage de fréquence. Le signal d'interférence balaie une bande de fréquence donnée, et différentes périodes de balayage et puissances du signal d'interférence sont appliquées. Un ensemble de mesures a été effectué pour évaluer la performance du réseau de communication en présence de ces interférences EM. Des mesures de débit sont présentées et l'impact des caractéristiques du signal d'interférence sur la qualité de la communication est analysé en soulignant l'importance du traitement du signal effectué par le récepteur OFDM.

18ème Colloque International et Exposition sur la Compatibilité ÉlectroMagnétique (CEM 2016), Rennes, France, 11-/07/2016 - 13/07/2016; L'environnement ferroviaire est caractérisé par un grand nombre de sources d'émissions électromagnétiques produisant des signaux de caractéristiques très variées. En parallèle, la variété des systèmes vulnérables de signalisation, de communication, de localisation... embarqués à bord des trains ou, à proximité des voies, nécessite l'usage de différentes techniques pour étudier leur compatibilité électromagnétique avec ce milieu. Cette communication est axée sur le développement d'un outil d'analyse temps-fréquence adapté à l'étude de ces différentes interférences et des systèmes qui doivent les tolérer. Il s'agit d'aboutir à un outil performant en dépit des différences considérables en termes de fréquence, puissance et de temps associées aux signaux à traiter. La méthode d'analyse temps-fréquence développée est évaluée sur des signaux synthétisés et représentatifs des signaux présents dans l'environnement ferroviaire. Ses résultats sont validés par comparaison avec des mesures.

The railway electromagnetic environment is characterized by the coexistence of various signal waveforms which address very different EMC problems. These signals are produced by sources occupying a wide frequency spectrum, and can be generated by high-power devices. Associated EMC issues are in fields such as energy, signaling and communication, and are usually treated by different approaches. Their resolution requires analysis methods adapted to these different fields. The mobility and the presence of transient interferences can require time-frequency analysis methods. The majority of these methods uses the FFT due to its performing calculation time. However, the FFT is limited for adapting analysis resolution with the characteristics of different studied systems. The frequency bands are not adjustable, and the time and frequency steps are not readily adaptable to those required for the systems considered. This thesis work deals with a comprehensive analysis tool able to overcome some limitations. The time and frequency resolutions can be selected according to the studied system and the targeted disturbances (transient or permanent), in order to highlight the impact that the interferences have on a given system. The analyzed frequency bands, the frequency and time steps are predefined according to the studied system, whether low or high frequency devices. These properties are obtained without degrading the calculation time performances, which are similar to FFT and allow the implementation of this tool on real time measurement equipment., L'environnement électromagnétique ferroviaire se caractérise par la coexistence de signaux de formes d'ondes diverses adressant des problèmes de CEM de natures très différentes. The railway electromagnetic environment is characterized by the coexistence of various signal waveforms which address very different EMC problems. These signals are produced by sources occupying a wide frequency spectrum, and can be generated by high-power devices. Associated EMC issues are in fields such as energy, signaling and communication, and are usually treated by different approaches. Their resolution requires analysis methods adapted to these different fields. The mobility and the presence of transient interferences can require time-frequency analysis methods. The majority of these methods uses the FFT due to its performing calculation time. However, the FFT is limited for adapting analysis resolution with the characteristics of different studied systems. The frequency bands are not adjustable, and the time and frequency steps are not readily adaptable to those required for the systems considered. This thesis work deals with a comprehensive analysis tool able to overcome some limitations. The time and frequency resolutions can be selected according to the studied system and the targeted disturbances (transient or permanent), in order to highlight the impact that the interferences have on a given system. The analyzed frequency bands, the frequency and time steps are predefined according to the studied system, whether low or high frequency devices. These properties are obtained without degrading the calculation time performances, which are similar to FFT and allow the implementation of this tool on real time measurement equipment.

This paper evaluates several techniques capable of mitigating the impact of low-power radio frequency jammers that interfere with ground-to-train communications. These radio communications are used for railway signaling, and interfering with these signals can have a negative impact on the train operation. Although the commercialization, detention, and use of radiofrequency jammers is strictly forbidden in most countries, they can be easily found on the internet at low cost and unexpectedly switched on by a passenger in a moving train. In this paper, we evaluate and compare the ground-to-train radio communication and intentional electromagnetic interference (IEMI) received signal powers delivered by roof train antennas to the train control command receiver. This comparison is used to deduce the potential zones of interference along the train trajectory and its consequences. Operating at the physical layer, we then propose and evaluate three mitigations techniques that can be used separately or combined to reduce the impact of this type of interference. We show that they can significantly reduce the jamming capability and help us in maintaining railway full operation.; Cet article évalue plusieurs techniques capables d'atténuer l'impact des brouilleurs de fréquence radio de faible puissance qui interfèrent avec les communications sol-train. Ces communications radio sont utilisées pour la signalisation ferroviaire, et l'interférence avec ces signaux peut avoir un impact négatif sur le fonctionnement du train. Bien que la commercialisation, la détention et l'utilisation de brouilleurs radiofréquences soient strictement interdites dans la plupart des pays, elles peuvent facilement être trouvées sur Internet à faible coût et allumées de manière inattendue par un passager dans un train en mouvement. Dans cet article, nous évaluons et comparons les puissances des signaux de communication radio sol-train et interférence électromagnétique intentionnelle (IEMI) fournies par les antennes des trains de toit au récepteur de commande de contrôle des trains. Cette comparaison permet de déduire les zones d'interférence potentielles le long de la trajectoire du train et ses conséquences. Opérant au niveau de la couche physique, nous proposons et évaluons trois techniques d'atténuation qui peuvent être utilisées séparément ou combinées pour réduire l'impact de ce type de brouillage. Nous montrons qu'ils peuvent réduire considérablement la capacité de brouillage et nous aider à maintenir le plein fonctionnement du chemin de fer.

The Global System for Mobile Communications-Railway (GSM-R) system is currently deployed in Europe in order to ensure the interoperability of the high-speed trains. Knowing that data related to control and command will be transmitted to trains through this communication system, the immunity of the GSM-R system against electromagnetic disturbances on board trains has to be certified. After a background about the GSM-R communication system, we will present in detail the typical disturbances that can affect this system in the railway environment. Significant differences between these disturbances and the test signals defined in the current European electromagnetic compatibility standards will be highlighted. The criteria that can be employed to evaluate the immunity of the GSM-R transmissions will then be discussed. Finally, new test signals and immunity test bench will be presented in order to expose the GSM-R transmissions to noise scenarios representative of the railway environment. Different immunity results will be presented and analyzed.

Because of this criticality and of its large deployment, studying the resilience of the railway network regarding intentional electromagnetic interferences (IEMI) is important. This paper considers IEMIs generated by low power electromagnetic jammers operated in railway environments. Jammers can be used to disturb or even interrupt the radio communications of railway operators. This paper concentrates on methods which were developed and evaluated to detect jamming signals appearing in a radio channel while a radio communication is running. Several supervised detection methods were tested. We concentrate and detail one of these methods which is derived from conventional EMC measurements. We present two hardware and software implementations using successively a real time analyzer and a prototype equipment built in the laboratory. Jamming signals are injected on a cellular phone radio communication and the results are analyzed. We obtain that the jamming signals are readily detected and some of their radiofrequency characteristics extracted.; Le réseau de chemin de fer composée de stations, dépôts, lignes, trains ... constitue l'une des principales infrastructures critiques dans les pays industrialisés. En raison de cette criticité et de son déploiement à grande échelle, l'étude de la résilience du réseau de chemin de fer concernant les interférences électromagnétiques intentionnelles (IEMI) est important. Cet article considère les IEMIs générés par brouilleurs électromagnétiques de faible puissance exploités dans des environnements de chemin de fer. Les brouilleurs peuvent être utilisés pour perturber ou même interrompre les communications radio des opérateurs ferroviaires. Ce document se concentre sur les méthodes qui ont été développées et évaluées pour détecter des signaux de brouillage figurant dans un canal radio alors qu'une communication radio est en marche. Plusieurs méthodes de détection supervisés ont été testés. Nous nous détaillons ces méthodes qui sont dériÎes de mesures CEM classiques. Nous présentons deux implémentations matérielles et logicielles utilisant successivement un Îritable analyseur fréquentiel et un équipement prototype construit dans le laboratoire. Des signaux de brouillage sont injectés sur une communication radio de téléphone cellulaire et les résultats sont analysés. On obtient à ce que les signaux de brouillage sont facilement détectés et certaines de leurs caractéristiques radiofréquences extraits.

The variety of the transient and permanent interferences and the current evolution of the communication and signaling railway systems require the adaptation of EMC railway standards. In particular, standardized emission measurement methodologies are not adapted to measure transient interferences which can significantly affect new railway signaling and communication systems. In this paper, we study a new time-frequency processing specifically designed for railway EMC issues, which could be implemented on real time spectrum analyzers. A flexible methodology is proposed offering an optimum analysis in relation with the technical specifications of the different railway signaling and communication systems.; L'environnement électromagnétique du chemin de fer est très riche en termes de perturbations électromagnétiques. La variété des signaux transitoires et des interférences permanentes et l'évolution actuelle des systèmes de communication et de signalisation ferroviaire nécessitent l'adaptation des normes ferroviaires de CEM. En particulier, les méthodes de mesure normalisées des émissions ne sont pas adaptées pour mesurer les interférences transitoires qui peuvent affecter de manière significative les nouveaux systèmes de signalisation et de communication ferroviaires. Dans cet article, nous étudions un nouveau traitement temps-fréquence spécialement conçu pour des problématiques CEM ferroviaires, qui pourraient être mises en oeuvre sur des analyseurs de spectre temps-réel. Une méthodologie flexible est proposée et offre une analyse optimale en relation avec les spécifications techniques des différents systèmes de signalisation et de la communication ferroviaires.

Eleven years ago the Madrid train bombings proved how much European railway security still needed to be improved. But now that rail equipment - like in most other industries - is increasingly standardised and connected, another, more insidious type of offensive has become likely: 'electromagnetic' (EM) attacks. An EU-funded project has developed detection technologies that can help the sector face this new threat.

Dans cet article, une méthode d'analyse temps-fréquences adaptée aux différents types d'interférences électromagnétiques présentes dans l'environnement ferroviaire est présentée. Ce travail s'appuie sur un outil d'analyse qui a été initialement développé dans le but de détecter et d'analyser les signaux électromagnétiques transitoires généré par le système d'électrification ferroviaire. Le travail présenté dans cette communication vise à élargir l'utilisation de cet outil et de l'adapter aux principales problématiques de CEM rencontrées dans le domaine ferroviaire.

Ce rapport présente une synthèse de tous les facteurs qui impactent les caractéristiques des perturbations électromagnétiques transitoires produites par les brèves ruptures de contact entre la caténaires et le pantographe d'un train. Il détaille également les méthodes d'analyse de ces perturbations qui ont été développées dans le cadre du projet Européen TREND afin de relier ces perturbations à leurs impacts sur le système de communication GSM-R et les différents systèmes de communication publiques.

GSM-Railway is the ground to train radio communication system currently under deployment along the European railway infrastructure. 150.000 km of railway track are foreseen to be covered in Europe in the coming years. The system is designed to ensure different communication services between ground and trains and is replacing progressively various old analogue radio equipment. It is one of the components of the “Euroradio” system, managing voice and signalling data. As a component of a critical infrastructure, GSM-R is a potential target for intentional electromagnetic interference. Indeed, malicious attacks can generate and propagate electromagnetic energy into the GSM-R frequency bands with the objective to impact the whole railway system. This paper presents a methodology based on the error vector magnitude parameter enabling to detect the presence of jamming signals at the receiver. This early detection can then be used by the railway system to appropriately react.

Cet article présente les travaux réalisés dans le cadre du projet SECRET (7e PCRD du programme européen / 2007-2013 sous le numéro de convention de subvention "285136") pour renforcer le réseau ferroviaire européen contre les brouillages électromagnétiques potentiels des communications et de la signalisation ferroviaires. Les essais d'immunité standardisés, qui sont actuellement menées sur les équipements de communication en présence d'interférences électromagnétiques (EM) sont présentés dans cette communication. La suite du document introduit les tests conçus et effectués dans le cadre du projet SECRET pour évaluer la résistance des systèmes de communication et de signalisation ferroviaires face à des signaux électromagnétiques générés par les brouilleurs de télécommunication.

Global System for Mobile communications-Railways (GSM-R) is now widely used for train-to-track radio communication. As for any radio communication system, non-intentional and intentional ElectroMagnetic Interference (EMI) can affect this track-to-train radio link. This paper studies the impact of low-power electromagnetic jammers on this communication. Firstly, experiments performed on a dedicated test bench are presented to evaluate the impact of selected jamming signals on a GSM-R radio communication. In certain jamming conditions, loss of connection can result. Then, a method to detect these jamming signals is presented. We considered and modelled a simplified GSM-R communication chain using a GMSK modulation. This was used to evaluate the impact of the jammer on the IQ constellation representation. As for the experimental part, the same interfering signals are applied. We then use the Error Vector Magnitude parameter to detect the presence of these jamming signals. Depending on the parameters of the modulation chain, we adapt our processing to detect the disturbance. A good detection of the jammed signal is obtained by analysing the EVM parameter while trying to detect these signals in an AWGN channel.

Background and objective: Assessing the behavior of active implanted medical devices in response to electromagnetic field (EMF) transmitters is a current issue of great importance. Given the multiplication telecommunication systems and our lack of knowledge as to the impact of electromagnetic effects, the present study investigated the reality of possible AIMD disturbance by electromagnetic fields by questioning health professionals. Method: A self-administered postal questionnaire was sent to almost 5,000 physicians in 5 specialties: cardiology, endocrinology, ENT, urology and neurology. It collected data on the existence and annual number of incidents observed and the conditions under which they occurred, the EMF sources involved, and the means of managing the malfunctions. Results: 1,188 physicians agreed to participate. 16% reported cases of implant failure, three-quarters of whom, mainly in cardiology, reported rates of at least 1 incident per year - amounting to more than 100 incidents per year in all. Severity appeared to be moderate (discomfort or transient symptoms), but frequently required resetting or, more rarely, replacing the device. Some serious incidents were, however, reported. The sources implicated were basically of 2 types: electronic security systems (antitheft and airport gates) and medical electromagnetic radiation devices. These incidents were poorly reported within the public health system, preventing follow-up and effective performance of alert and surveillance functions. Conclusion: Although minor, the risk of interference between EMF sources and AIMDs is real and calls for vigilance. It particularly concerns antitheft and airport security gates, although other sources may also cause incidents.; Contexte : Évaluer le comportement des dispositifs médicaux implantables actifs face à des sources émettrices de rayonnements électromagnétiques est aujourd'hui un véritable enjeu. Du fait de la multiplication des systèmes de télécommunications et devant un manque de connaissances sur la mesure des effets électromagnétiques, l'objectif de cette étude est d'investiguer la réalité du risque de perturbation des implants médicaux actifs par des champs électromagnétiques auprès des professionnels de santé. Méthodes: une enquête par autoquestionnaire postal, adressée à près de 5000 médecins de 5 spécialités médicales (cardiologie, endocrinologie, orl, urologie et neurologie) a été réalisée. Le questionnaire a permis de recueillir l'existence et le nombre d'incidents annuels observés par les médecins, de recueillir des informations sur les conditions dans lesquelles les incidents recensés ont pu se produire ; d'identifier les sources électromagnétiques à l'origine des dysfonctionnements ; de connaitre les modes de gestion et de résolution de ces incidents. Un entretien téléphonique a permis de mieux caractériser les incidents recensés.Résultats : 1188 médecins ont accepté de participer à l'étude. 16% des médecins ont observé des dysfonctionnements d'implant : les Ÿ de ces derniers évaluent la fréquence des dérèglements à moins d'un incident par an, essentiellement en cardiologie. Cela peut représenter cependant plus d'une centaine d'incidents par an. La gravité des incidents apparait modérée (inconfort ou symptômes passagers), nécessitant cependant fréquemment une reprogrammation de l'implant ou plus rarement un remplacement. Cependant, quelques incidents graves ont été signalés. Les sources d'interférences électromagnétiques incriminées provenaient essentiellement de deux types d'appareils d'équipement : les systèmes électroniques de sécurité (portiques antivol ou d'aéroports) et les appareils de rayonnements électromagnétiques utilisés en médecine. Il faut noter la faible remontée des incidents au niveau des instances de santé publique, ce qui ne leur permet pas de suivre les incidents et de jouer leur rôle d'alerte et de surveillance.Conclusion : Même s'il reste mineur, le risque d'interférence entre champs électromagnétiques et implants médicaux est réel et implique de maintenir une vigilance. Il est plus particulièrement lié aux portiques antivols ou de contrôles aux aéroports, mais les autres sources sont susceptibles d'être également à l'origine d'incidents.

Cette communication porte sur la détection de signaux d’interférences électromagnétiques spécifiques. L’objectif étant de détecter la présence de dispositifs visant à brouiller intentionnellement des signaux de communication. Ces travaux portent plus spécifiquement sur le brouillage des signaux GSM ou GSM-R et visent à identifier des solutions de détection qui pourraient être directement implémentées au sein des terminaux de communication.

The terrorism threat to European citizens has been elevated for several years and this threat notably concerns rail transportation and the infrastructures providing mass transport. Both rail operation and its infrastructure are critical priorities because of the economic and security impacts of potential attacks (loss of service, destruction of vehicles and destruction of infrastructure...), extended consequences on the surrounding businesses and finally, the impaired reputation of being a safe and secure transport system. The European railway infrastructure is concerned by EM attacks because it constitutes a mass transport system which includes a large number of telecommunication, command-control, electronic and informatics systems and subsystems vulnerable to electromagnetic interferences. The Electromagnetic interferences can act on the wireless communications, on the wired networks and on the electronic and informatics systems.; La menace terroriste augmente constamment en Europe depuis plusieurs années. Cette menace concerne notamment les transports de masse tel que le transport ferroviaire. La protection du réseau ferroviaire et de son infrastructure est prioritaire en raison des impacts sécuritaires et économiques qui peuvent résulter d'attaques terroristes, mais également en raison des conséquences sur la réputation du système de transport en matière de sécurité, qui peuvent considérablement affecter sa fréquentation.Le chemin de fer est une cible attrayante pour les actions malveillantes en raison de sa facilité d'accès. Les attaques menées sur l'infrastructure ferroviaire française en Novembre 2008 à l'aide de barres métalliques placées sur les caténaires ont provoqué des retards pour 160 TGV, Eurostar et Thalys ( attaques coordonnées qui ciblaient quatre lignes ferroviaires différentes sur le réseau des chemins de fer français ) et ont montré que des actions plus subtiles que des attentats à la bombe peuvent être effectuées par des terroristes : les terroristes peuvent fonder leurs méthodes d'action sur les vulnérabilités des technologies employées . Le terrorisme électromagnétique (EM) est basé sur une approche similaire qui consiste à mettre en défaut des équipements ou appareils qui sont utilisés pour optimiser l'efficacité et la sécurité du système de transport ferroviaire.L'infrastructure ferroviaire européenne est une infrastructure particulièrement critique en matière d'attaques EM. En effet, le réseau ferroviaire européen constitue un système de transport de masse, fortement automatisé, qui comprend un grand nombre de systèmes électroniques, informatiques et de télécommunication vulnérables aux interférences électromagnétiques. Ces technologies vulnérables assurent des fonctions de contrôle-commande, de communication ou de signalisation.Dans le projet SECRET, les dispositifs d'attaque EM considérés sont des dispositifs relativement faciles à obtenir tels que des brouilleurs de télécommunications. Certains de ces brouilleurs sont très faciles à utiliser et peuvent couvrir des fréquences utiles dans le domaine ferroviaire. Cet article décrit les principaux travaux menés dans le cadre du projet SECRET afin de protéger le réseau contre ce type de menace et de faciliter le retour à la normale.

An in-depth analysis of the electromagnetic interferences generated by trains requires a better understanding of specific railway interference sources. Interferences due to the losses of contact between catenary and pantograph are among them. This paper presents a modeling methodology proposed to analyze the effect of pantograph arcing on GSM-R antennas located on the train roof. The model was developed using the CST™ microwave studio tool. Comparisons were performed with experimental results to assess the quality of the simulation results. Finally, an analysis was carried out in order to discriminate the couplings between the GSM-R antenna and the different components of the model.

In this paper, we investigate the impact of electromagnetic interference (EMI) on the quality of a Global System for Mobile communications - Railways (GSM-R) ground to train radio link. Scenarios of radiated electromagnetic (EM) disturbances applied to a Gaussian minimum shift keying (GMSK) based receiver, potentially impairing the communication quality are assessed. The objective is to establish a link between the disturbance characteristics of the interference and the received communication quality; the physical layer is considered. A GSM-R communication chain is modeled. Radiated EMI perturbations are injected to study, at the receiver, the bit error rate (BER). The signal plus interference characteristics are analyzed to detect the interference. In a second step, this work will be used to identify suitable criteria to implement an automatic EMI detection and identification system.

Le secteur ferroviaire est en perpétuelle évolution technologique pour faire face aux défis actuels, en particulier pour favoriser la mobilité et les échanges en respectant au mieux les contraintes écologiques et de développement durable. Les défis sont aussi de faire face aux menaces qui peuvent peser sur les systèmes ferroviaires en portant atteinte à leur sécurité et à leur sûreté. L’évolution de ces menaces nécessite de développer les efforts en matière de recherche en vue de les prévenir. Parmi les menaces nouvelles les attaques électromagnétiques contre les systèmes ferroviaires ne peuvent pas être ignorées et l’UIC (Union Internationale des Chemins de fer), compte tenu de l’étendue de son réseau et de son expérience, a à ce titre décidé de participer au projet de recherche SECRET pour faire prendre en compte les intérêts des entreprises ferroviaires et pour leur diffuser l’information dont elles peuvent avoir besoin.

With the proliferation of analog and digital electronic systems in the current means of transport, the EM (Electromagnetic) environment becomes richer and richer in all kinds of signals and, therefore, it becomes more difficult to characterize. In this thesis, we focus on a particular digital system: the GSM-R (Global System for Mobile communications - Railways). It is the new digital radio communication system under deployment on the European rail network in order to ensure the interoperability of high-speed trains in Europe. Then, all countries in Europe will use the same system, which will facilitate the movement of cross-border trains from a country to another one. In the railway environment, the GSM-R is subject to different EM noise sources, including transient EM interferences coming from the sliding contact between the pantograph and the catenary. These disturbances cover wide frequency bands including, potentially, those of the GSM-R system. We propose a classification method for predicting the effect of transient EM disturbances on the quality of GSM-R transmissions. This classification method could be implemented on trains where it could identify and locate critical areas for the quality of GSM-R transmissions along the journey. From the point of view of standardization, these research works could contribute to the necessary evolution of equipment and methods defined in EMC standards in order to adapt to the new problems arising from the multiplicity of wireless communication systems and protocols employed nowadays in the world of transports., Avec la multiplication des systèmes électroniques analogiques et numériques embarqués dans les moyens de transports actuels, l’environnement EM (ElectroMagnétique) devient de plus en plus riche en signaux de toutes sortes et, par conséquent, il devient plus complexe à caractériser. Dans ces travaux de thèse, nous nous intéressons à un système numérique en particulier : le GSM-R (Global System for Mobile communications - Railways). Il s’agit du nouveau système de communication radio numérique portant la signalisation actuellement en cours de déploiement sur le réseau ferroviaire européen afin d'assurer l'interopérabilité des trains à grande vitesse en Europe. Ainsi, tous les pays d’Europe utiliseront le même système, ce qui facilitera la circulation des trains transfrontaliers d’un pays à l’autre. En environnement ferroviaire, le GSM-R doit faire face à différentes sources de bruit EM, notamment aux perturbations EM transitoires provenant du contact glissant entre le fil caténaire et le pantographe. Ces perturbations couvrent de larges bandes de fréquences dont, potentiellement, celles du GSM-R. Nous proposons une méthode de classification qui permet de prédire l’effet des perturbations EM transitoires sur la qualité des transmissions GSM-R. Cette méthode de classification pourrait être mise en place à bord des trains où elle permettrait d’identifier et localiser les zones critiques pour la qualité des transmissions GSM-R tout au long du trajet. Du point de vue de la standardisation, ces travaux de recherche pourraient contribuer à l’évolution nécessaire des équipements et des méthodologies définies dans les normes CEM afin de s’adapter aux nouvelles problématiques émanant de la multiplicité des systèmes et protocoles de communication sans fils employés dans le monde des transports.

This paper explores an approach trying to recognize the presence of electromagnetic attacks on an equipment. Wireless communications are widely used in railway traffic management systems. Such systems are probably susceptible to be disturbed by malicious actions involving jammers. The general objective of this work is to develop a specific method enabling to detect and to recognize these types of interfering signals. This method could be used to involve adequate reactions in order to reduce the impact on the railway network. This paper focuses on the recognition method. It is based on accurate statistical models of signals generated by jammers. This work is carried out in the framework of the European project “SECRET” for SECurity of Railways against Electromagnetic aTtacks.

National audience; Les communications par Courant Porteur en Ligne (CPL) permettent de transmettre des données à haut débit sur le réseau électrique résidentiel. En raison du rayonnement électromagnétique parasite que cette technologie génère, une stricte réglementation s'applique sur les niveaux d'émission autorisés. Cet article propose d'utiliser la technique radio du Retournement Temporel (RT) pour réduire le niveau d'interférence des systèmes CPL. Les mérites de l'application de cette technique du domaine du sans-fil aux systèmes filaires sont d'abord détaillés d'un point de vue théorique, puis cette méthode est étudiée sur la base de mesures expérimentales réalisées dans des habitations en France et en Allemagne. Les résultats montrent que dans 60% des cas, les interférences électromagnétiques peuvent être diminuées de plus de 5 dB.

The Global System for Mobile communications - Railways (GSM-R) is being deployed in different countries to develop an efficient communication-based train control (CBTC) system. GSM-R participates to achieve railways interoperability, replacing noninteroperable CBTC on existing networks and, thus, facilitating cross-border train circulations. GSM-R ensures voice and data transmissions between trains and control centers and also between trains. As any radio equipment, it is subject to electromagnetic (EM) disturbances present in the railway environment. Therefore, the quality of GSM-R transmissions can deteriorate. It is then important to evaluate and predict the effect of these disturbances in order to avoid any loss of train operational capacity. After an overview of the methods used for the characterization of the EM environment, we describe the GSM-R and the EM disturbances that can affect its operation. The reasons why the existing characterization methods are not fully adapted to the GSM-R are highlighted. The general principle of classification is briefly recalled. The rest of this paper develops the methodology proposed to perform the classification of transient EM noises and the presentation of a test bench and its associated experimental results. Finally, an application to an add-on electromagnetic compatibility supervising equipment installed on board the train is described.

In this paper, we investigate the impact of electromagnetic interference (EMI) on the quality of a Global System for Mobile communications - Railways (GSM-R) ground to train radio link. Scenarios of radiated electromagnetic (EM) disturbances applied to a Gaussian minimum shift keying (GMSK) based receiver, potentially impairing the communication quality are assessed. The objective is to establish a link between the disturbance characteristics of the interference and the received communication quality; the physical layer is considered. A GSM-R communication chain is modeled. Radiated EMI perturbations are injected to study, at the receiver, the bit error rate (BER). The signal plus interference characteristics are analyzed to detect the interference. In a second step, this work will be used to identify suitable criteria to implement an automatic EMI detection and identification system.

With the deployment of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), most of the existing groundbased signaling equipment operated along railway tracks will gradually disappear. The signaling information and command/control signals will become exchanged over Global System for Mobile communications-Railways (GSM-R). Consequently, railway signaling resilience should be re-evaluated against Intentional ElectroMagnetic Interference (IEMI) threats. In this paper we investigate GSM-R vulnerability to IEMI. These IEMIs consist in known interferers and their corresponding interference characteristics. The paper starts by describing the GSM-R communication model. Then, the interference characteristics are analyzed and progressively modified in order to study the corresponding impact on the communication. Results are presented according to these interferer characteristics and associated communication bit error rate (BER).

International audience; The transients produced by the pantograph electric arc and captured by a GSM-R antenna mounted on the roof top are characterized in the time domain and in the joint time–frequency domain, in order to quantify the noise produced on the GSM-R channels. The recorded signals are also characterized in order to evaluate the behavior of the GSM-R protocol in relation to burst noise with transients undergoing different repetition intervals. To this aim the GSM-R protocol is considered in particular with respect to data bit protection and for the relationship between signal-to-noise ratio, bit error rate and frame error rate, evaluated by repeated laboratory tests based on recorded transients. The measurements were performed on a 25 kV 50 Hz French railway line.

Le système GSM-R est en cours de déploiement sur le réseau ferroviaire européen afin d'uniformiser les systèmes de communication et de signalisation entre les pays. A terme, il assurera la transmission de la voix entre les agents et des informations de signalisation qui s'afficheront sur le tableau de bord. Ainsi, l'intégrité des données est essentielle pour garantir la sécurité du réseau. Cependant, ces transmissions sont soumises à des perturbations EM sévères. Ainsi, des tests d'immunité en présence de bruits EM représentatifs des conditions réelles doivent être menés pour évaluer les risques lors des transmissions. Ce papier présente deux méthodes de test pour les transmissions GSM-R. L'une repose sur un banc de test utilisant le mode conduit, l'autre emploie le mode rayonné en chambre anéchoïque. Nous proposons d'analyser les résultats obtenus avec ces deux méthodes.

The management of the European railway traffic will be ensured by the use of train's embedded communication systems, particularly the GSM-R (Global System for Mobile communications - Railways). This system is exposed to the EM interferences observed on board trains and its EM immunity has to be guaranteed. However, the immunity of the GSM-R cannot be studied according to the current standardized methods mainly developed for the test of analogy systems. The GSM-R is a digital communication system having the ability to stand to some EM interferences, and its immunity has to be performed according to new methodologies considering these particular characteristics. The aim of this work is to develop new methodologies to characterize the railway EM environment adapted to the context of the GSM-R communication system. Firstly, the frequency and temporal measurement methods have been used in order to characterize the EM interferences observed on the GSM-R antennas in railway environment. The obtained results have shown that the transient EM events taking place between the catenary and the pantograph are the main source of disturbances for the GSM-R system. In order to study the immunity of this system against transient EM disturbances, in the second part, we have characterized these transients in terms of time and amplitude parameters. In the following, a statistical study of each parameter has been performed, and we have developed signals for immunity tests statistically similar to the observed railway environment's interferences. Ainsi, nous avons exploité les méthodes fréquentielle et temporelle pour caractériser les perturbations EM que peut subir son signal utile sous des conditions normales d'opération. Les résultats obtenus ont montré que les perturbations EM transitoires qui apparaissent lors d'un mauvais contact entre la caténaire et le pantographe sont la source principale de perturbations EM pour le système GSM-R. Ainsi, nous avons étudié minutieusement leurs caractéristiques temporelles et d'amplitude à travers une étude statistique de chaque paramètre. Ultra Wide Band (UWB) may offer very effecient solutions for various communication and sensing applications. Two approaches have emerged, which meet all the communication requirements: impulse and multi-band systems. The first system operates between 3.1 to 10.6 GHz in a single frequency band. The second one exploits the division of the bandwidth into sub-bands (each sub-band width being up to around 500 MHz wide). The present work is concerned in the second approach. So, we propose to use orthogonal functions called Modified Gegenbauer Functions (MGF) in the multi-band UWB system. Different scenarios are studied and compared in the scope of a system offering communication and location capabilities for subway trains. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed system, the Bit Error Rate (BER) values are calculated and analyzed in the presence of multi-user interference, assuming asynchonous users. It is shown that Gegenbauer functions offer the performance required for our multi-band UWB communication and location system.

To insure interoperability of transeuropean trains, new transmission systems (GSMR, Eurobalise) are developed in order to permit communications between trains and control centres. These systems have to be available and safe from an electromagnetic point of view, but the normalized methods to characterize electromagnetic noise in the railway environment are not convenient for these applications. This paper presents new experimental methods to characterize the electromagnetic noise on board trains which are studied in the framework of the European project "Railcom". The results of measurements realized both in time and in frequency domains, are analysed and certain conclusions can be used as a first step to define a new standard for the considered systems.
