The Bureau for Workers'Activities (ACTRAV) has just published a new issue of the International Journal of Labour Research, entitled Crisis: Causes, Prospects and Alternatives. According to the journal's editor Pierre Laliberté, “this issue deals with one of the major challenges facing today's world of work – how to define worker-friendly and environment-friendly prospects for the future and then fight to achieve them.” The issue contains a series of articles, most of which are drawn from the Global Labour University conference on “ Labour and the global crisis: sharing the burden (!) shaping the future (?)”, which was held in Berlin in September 2010.

This important collection of essays brings together the main findings of ILO research since the start of the global financial and economic crisis in 2008. With contributions from diverse research disciplines, the volume provides new perspectives on employment and income-led growth and the role of regulation, and makes policy recommendations for the future.

Indonesia was one of the few economies to have demonstrated resilience to the global crisis in terms of both growth and employment. This study shows that the ability of this country to weather the crisis was almost entirely due to the country's reliance on a series of strong social protection schemes which were implemented after the 1997 Asian financial crisis. It also addresses the challenges which lie ahead and the areas for improvement.

Despite a dramatic decline in output as a result of the global financial and economic crisis, Germany's labour market held up well compared with other countries. This was the conclusion reached by the first comprehensive assessment of Germany's policy to tackle the crisis, issued by the ILO.

Synthesis of a new series of “Studies on Growth with Equity”, this paper by the International Institute for Labour Studies of the ILO shows that growth and equity can be achieved in parallel if the right mix of policies is put in place. It is based on findings from reviews for three countries (Brazil, Germany and Indonesia) which are available hereunder.

The International Institute for Labour Studies, a research arm of the International Labour Organization (ILO), is to launch its fourth report in the series “Studies on Growth with Equity” in Madrid on Monday, 27 June, 2011. The new study “Spain: Quality Jobs for a New Economy” takes an in-depth look at the Spanish labour market and economy and offers a set of policy recommendations on how the Spanish economy can best recover from the recent crisis. It also includes a series of comprehensive statistics and trends related to the labour market in Spain.

The annual Global Employment Trends (GET) report provides the latest global and regional estimates of employment and unemployment, employment by sector, vulnerable employment, labour productivity and working poverty, while also analysing country-level issues and trends in the labour market. Taking into account macroeconomic trends and forecasts, the GET includes a short-term outlook for labour markets around the world.

This report reviews the current state of knowledge concerning children in hazardous work and presents the case for a new focus on the issue as part of the wider global effort to eliminate the worst forms of child labour.

The report presents the latest global and regional labour market trends for youth and specifically explores how the global economic crisis has exposed the vulnerabilities of young people around the world. In developed economies, the crisis has led to the highest youth unemployment rates on record, while in developing economies – where 90 per cent of the world's youth live – the crisis threatens to exacerbates the challenges of rampant decent work deficits, adding to the number of young people who find themselves stuck in working poverty and thus prolonging the cycle of working poverty through at least another generation.

The International Journal of Labour Reseach provides an overview of recent research on labour and social policies from trade union researchers and academic around the world. The journal is multidisciplinary and of interest to trade union researchers, labour ministries and academics of all relevant disciplines worldwide - industrial relations, sociology, law, economics and political science.

This code of practice on safety and health in underground coalmines reflects the many changes in the industry and its workforce, as well as new developments in occupational safety and health policies and ILO instruments on occupational safety and health. A leaner, multi-skilled workforce, new technology and less prescriptive, more systems-oriented approach to addressing safety and health are also reflected in this code.

This publication is a result of collaborative efforts of a wide group of ILO staff, indigenous organizations, experts and researchers on the main aspects of indigenous and tribal peoples'rights. The ILO Summit on the Global Jobs Crisis was held on 15-17 June 2009 in Geneva, in response to the financial crisis and its grave impact on global unemployment, poverty and inequality.
